Abstract. The North American mid‐continent population of Lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens L.) has increased by ca. 7% per year, largely as a result of geese feeding on agricultural crops in winter and on migration. We describe the long‐term effects of increasing numbers of geese at an arctic breeding ground (La Pérouse Bay, Manitoba) on intertidal salt‐marsh vegetation. Between 1985 and 1999 goose grubbing caused considerable loss of graminoid vegetation along transects in intertidal marshes. Loss of vegetation led to bare sediment with a plant cover of less than 2%. Changes in vegetation could not be described by simple linear, geometric or exponential functions; most losses occurred between 1988 and 1990 and losses were staggered in time between individual transects, some of which had all vegetation removed. Between 1979 and 1999 the standing crop in July in remaining intact heavily‐grazed swards of Puccinellia phry‐ganodes and Carex subspathacea fell from 40–60 g m‐2 to 20–30 g m‐2. Intense grazing on remaining patches of sward has restricted growth of these clonal forage plants and hypersalinity of bare sediments has precluded re‐establishment of vegetation. Between 1989 and 1993 numbers of faecal droppings in grazed plots reached maximum values of 15–22 droppings m‐2 wk‐1. Since then peak values have remained at less than 13 droppings m‐2 wk‐1. The loss of vegetation and changes in soil conditions have resulted in the establishment of an alternative stable state (hypersaline bare sediment).  相似文献

Abstract Almost all of the methods traditionally selected to estimate forage damage caused by grasshoppers in grassland are to determine the forage damage in relation to forage yield in fall. But the damage to standing forage, not the forage yields in fall, should be considered in determining forage damage and economic thresholds in grazing pasture. A new method that combines the field hang-cage rearing with natural grasshopper population dynamics to evaluate the damage to standing forage was presented in this paper. The complex grasshoppers economic threshold models in grazing pasture can be described as: a0+ a 1 M 1 + a 2 M 2+a3S1+a4S2= C Where M1: biomass of Myrmeleotettix palpalis (Zub.); M 2 : biomass of Chorthippus dubius (Zub); S 1 : average individual weight of My. palpalis; S 2 : average individual weight of Ch. dubius, a0-a 4 : constants. The level of grasshopper's infestation was described with regard to both grasshopper density and phenology.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 The temporal and spatial distribution of parasitism in Epinotia tedella was investigated within two spruce stands.
  • 2 Most eggs were laid by the host female early in the season. The parasitoid, Pimplopterus dubius, was subjected to a temporal stress, and it also exhibited a greater oviposition rate early in its life. The temporal distribution of attack frequencies by P.dubius and Apanteles tedellae showed a good adaptation to the phenology of the host.
  • 3 The spatial distribution of flight activity indicated a preference to exposed sub-habitats by P.dubius and to dark and sheltered sub-habitats by A.tedellae. The distribution of host larvae showed an aggregation in the lower and central parts of the canopy, and so did the attacks by A.tedellae— even more pronounced. The attacks by P.dubius showed a slightly inverse aggregation pattern. Apparently, the distribution of attacks was caused by preference to physical conditions, rather than local host densities.
  • 4 The decreasing log. area of discovery on increasing log. parasitoid density is obviously a ‘pseudo-interference’ phenomenon caused by the aggregation of A.tedellae, and temporal asynchrony in P.dubius.
  • 5 P.dubius dominated in young stands and its importance decreased with increasing age of the stands. The importance of A.tedellae was greatest in stands between 20 and 40 years old, and it dominated in those stands that were especially dense and dark, due to absent thinnings.

Population densities of the three grasshopper species on Miscanthus sinensis grassland in the Kawatabi IBP Area, Japan, Parapleurus alliaceus, Mongolotettix japonicus and Chorthippus latipennis, were estimated principally by the release-and-recapture method for five years from 1968 to 1972. The total number of individuals of all three grasshopper species was about 42 per 100m2 in August. The number of individuals of P. alliaceus adult, the dominant species on this grassland, showed a tendency to decline during the five years, though the amplitude was not so large. The number of eggs laid was, however, nearly constant and the mortality from the second nymphal instar to adult was relatively low and constant during the survey period. The weather conditions during the periods of egg and the first instar, such as snowfall and temperature decreasing, are suggested to be one of the factors causing variation in numbers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 The patterns of mortality in laboratory populations of the grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus Thunberg are examined at a range of densities and at different stages of nymphal development with particular reference to the phenotypes of nymphs that die or survive.
  • 2 Total mortality during nymphal development rises from density-independence at the lowest densities to approximately compensating density-dependence at the highest densities.
  • 3 The greatest proportion of total mortality occurs in the first two instars. The stage broadly covering the second instar is the ‘key-stage’ determining adult density. The mortality during these stages is largely density-independent. There is relatively little mortality during stages broadly covering the final instar, but it is density-dependent and also plays a significant part in determining final adult density.
  • 4 As the mortality becomes more density-dependent, either with density itself or with cohort age, the smallest individuals become increasingly disproportionately prone to mortality.
  • 5 Males, which are smaller, are more susceptible to mortality than females, but their susceptibility relative to their size is less than that of females.

  • 1 Macroinvertebrate community development in Wolf Point Creek in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska formed by ice recession was investigated from 1991 to 1994 as part of a long‐term study of colonization now exceeding 20 years. Chironomidae, the first taxon to colonize the stream, still dominated the community comprising 75–95% by number, but species succession was apparent.
  • 2 Species richness in August increased from five species in 1978 to 11 in 1991 and 16 in 1994.
  • 3 Diamesa species, abundant in 1978 at densities exceeding 2 750 m‐2, were not collected in 1994, while Pagastia partica dominated the community with densities exceeding 10 000 m‐2.
  • 4 Sixteen taxa, never previously collected, colonized the stream between 1991 and 1994 including representatives of Coleoptera, Muscidae, Trichoptera, and the first noninsect taxon, Oligochaeta. Colonization by new taxa was associated with an increase in summer water temperature and the development of riparian vegetation.
  • 5 Inter‐specific competition is suggested as a possible factor in species succession and is incorporated into a taxa richness model of community development in postglacial streams incorporating stable and unstable channels.

Interannual population oscillations ofMonoporeia affinis and sedentary chironomids are negatively correlated in Lake Mälaren. Sedentary chironomid abundance regressed againstM. affinis density was highly significant at a lag response of one year (adj. R2=0.54, P=0.0001). The inverse correlation between Tanytarsini (Micropsectra sp. andTanytarsus sp.) andM. affinis densities supports a recruitment limitation hypothesis, viz. that the growth or survival of early instar chironomids is low at high amphipod densities. Microcosm studies showed density-dependent effects on the growth and survival of second instarCh. riparius larvae across an amphipod density gradient. No significant effects were found on growth or survival of third instars. These findings support the chironomid recruitment limitation hypothesis. Amphipod predation on early instar chironomid larvae is suggested as a population controlling mechanism.  相似文献

The effects of prey density on survival and growth of damselfly larvae   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Abstract.
  • 1 Instar 10, 11 and 12 Ischnura larvae were maintained throughout the instar on a constant food supply (Daphnia magna of a standard size).
  • 2 A very narrow range of prey availability separated cohorts in which all the larvae successfully moulted to the next instar, from those in which all the larvae died (less than one Daphnia per day in the case of instar 10).
  • 3 Larvae were able to survive long periods without food at 16°C.
  • 4 Prey availability had a marked effect on development rates, which continued to increase at prey densities well in excess of 100% survival by the larvae.
  • 5 The data on Ischnura survival and development rates are compared with previously published general models of these two components of the predators' rate of increase.
  • 6 We conclude that starvation is very unlikely to be a significant cause of mortality in the field for Ischnura (or indeed most other Odonata larvae), but that prey availability undoubtedly influences development rates. Natural selection should therefore favour larvae that forage optimally to minimize development times.

Abstract

Cicada emergence skins in a subalpine shrub grassland have been sampled during 1969–75 to determine the abundance and spatial distributions of nymphs feeding on plant roots. A guild of six cicada species is primarily associated with two forms of vegetation: shrubs (Dracophyllum and Cassinia) and tall tussock (Chionochloa). Skin locations were mapped relative to dominant vegetation species, litter zones, and soil and rock pavements over a range of aspects, altitudes, and vegetation types, and sampling methods were scaled at four levels: the locality, plot, quadrat, and individual plant. There were significant differences in skin counts over four years, and different measures of mean skin densities are given for the four sampling scales. The two primary vegetation types had cumulative 1969–72 mean densities of 5.2 ± 4.0 and 12.9 ± 10.0 skins/quadrat (2.3 m2) , and the 1969–72 mean productivities of the upper 25% of quadrats (adjusted for percent ground cover) were, respectively, 5.5 and 35.5 skins/m2. These productivities are believed to be conservative estimates of the maturing nymph numbers per individual host plant over the span of one cicada generation. Over a 17-year span, such productivities lie within the upper range of mean densities recorded for 17-year periodical cicadas in the United States. As the dominant subalpine vegetation species are very slow-growing,it is suggested that high densities of nymphs feeding on root sap may affect plant vitality, although 1971/1987 comparisons of vitality in 52 Chionochloa tussocks could not positively demonstrate a correlation across all data. Skin dispersion analyses indicated significant levels of patchiness, in agreement with other nymphal studies and with known cicada oviposition behaviour. No single dispersion model fitted the data comprehensively, and it is suggested that a gradual shifting of the centres of cicada aggregation may occur over a cumulative period of several generations.  相似文献

  • 1 Quantifying dispersal in predator–prey systems can improve our understanding of how these species interact in space and time, as well as their relative distributions across complex landscapes.
  • 2 We measured the dispersal abilities of three forest insects associated with red pine decline: the eastern five spined pine engraver Ips grandicollis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), its main predator Thanasimus dubius (Coleoptera: Cleridae) and the basal stem and root colonizer Dendroctonus valens (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). We also examined the edge behaviours of these species and the predator Platysoma spp (Coleoptera: Histeridae) between red pine stands (habitat) and clearings (nonhabitat).
  • 3 Thanasimus dubius dispersed 12 times farther than its prey I. grandicollis, with 50% of predators dispersing farther than 1.54 km. This profound difference in dispersal behaviour between prey and predator may contribute to the clumped distribution of I. grandicollis.
  • 4 Most T. dubius and D. valens were confined in the pine forest, thus showing strong edge behaviour. This differed from I. grandicollis and Platysoma spp., which were commonly found in open areas adjacent to red pine plantations.
  • 5 The bark beetle I. grandicollis and one of its main predators, T. dubius, exhibited different patterns of movement within a fragmented landscape. Despite a greater dispersal ability of T. dubius within forests, the spatial distribution of this predator may be restricted by fragmentation of its habitat, and provide an opportunity for partial escape of its prey.
  • 6 The present study contributes to our knowledge of top‐down forces within red pine stands undergoing decline. Differences of dispersal patterns and edge behaviour could contribute to the initiation of new pockets of decline, as well as the connectedness among existing ones.

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 The burrowing intertidal beetle Bledius spectabilis Kraatz (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) occurs on all but the very youngest marshes on Scolt Head Island, Norfolk, U.K., and may reach densities of up to 4000 m?2 (combined adult and larval densities).
  • 2 The beetles are restricted to a narrow band about 1m wide along the edges of creeks draining the low marsh areas of the island, and the vertical range is restricted to a zone between 0.8 and 1.55m above Ordnance Datum. The majority of the aggregations and the highest densities are between 1.2 and 1.3m O.D., that is between about 24 and 40cm below MHWN (mean high water at neap tides).
  • 3 Poor drainage, in particular the presence of long-standing pools of water over the soil surface, is important in restricting the beetles to well-drained edge regions.
  • 4 Transplant experiments suggest that displacement by saltmarsh vegetation, in particular Halimione portulacoides (L.) Aell., sets the upper limit of the beetles’distribution.
  • 5 The zonation of B.spectablis fits well into the general scheme that has been proposed for the zonation of marine animals from rocky shores.
  • 6 The beetles produce large (3–6 mm diameter), rapidly draining, abundant (up to 9% of soil volume) and persistent burrows. We suggest that these beetle aggregations may play an important role in the development of the saltmarsh.

Genetical and ecological differentiation across a hybrid zone   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT.
  • 1 There is a narrow hybrid zone between two chromosomal races of the grasshopper Podisma pedestris (L.) in the French Alps.
  • 2 There are no gross differences in habitat across the zone, and a multivariate analysis of the vegetation composition detected no significant transition either.
  • 3 The hatch and development rates of Podisma in hybrid populations were lower than those found in matched habitat types outside the zone.
  • 4 The simplest explanation for the persistence of the parapatric distribution of the two races is that hybrid disadvantage is maintaining a tension zone between them.

  • 1 The spatial and temporal distributions of the most abundant bdelloid rotifer, Embata laticeps (Murray), inhabiting the sediment surface and the hyporheic interstitial of a gravel stream were investigated between October 1991 and October 1992. Three temporal peaks of population density occurred during the year at the sediment surface differing in their riming from the density peaks detected within the bed sediments.
  • 2 The depth distributions of E. laticeps in pool and riffle areas differed significantly. Higher abundances were found between 10 and 20 cm depth in the pool and between 20 and 30 cm in the riffle area. In these two sites a significant effect of surface discharge (estimated 1 week before sampling) on rotifer densities was found. Discharge greater than 0.424 m3s?1 significantly reduced the densities in the riffle, while only at values greater than 1.660m3s?1 were abundances influenced in the pool area.
  • 3 The percentages of egg-bearing females were higher within the bed sediment than in the surface layer, and in the pool area than in the riffle. Thus, overall mean values of population increase were higher in the pool habitat (x?= 0.015 ± SE 0.029 day?1) than in the riffle and at the sediment surface (x?= 0.004 ± 0.025 and 0.005 ± 0.026 day?1, respectively). In addition, population growth fluctuated more strongly at the sediment surface than within the hyporheic intersiritial. Comparison of the observed values of population increase with a randomization test, where observed densities were randomly permuted, revealed no significant differences between those observed and values from a random model. Thus, a clear trend in population growth of E. laticeps over time could not be demonstrated in this gravel stream.

Abstract.
  • 1 In cassava fields in Africa, population sex ratios of Epidinocarsis fopezi vaned from 0.44 (males to total parasitoids) at low host densities to highly male-biased ratios of 0.70 at high host densities.
  • 2 This variability is caused by the difference in allocation of sons and daughters to hosts of different sizes, through the following mechanisms: (a) small, i.e. second instar, hosts are mainly used for the production of male offspring, whereas in large, i.e. third instar, hosts a variable, female-biased sex ratio is produced; (b) E.fopezi does not selectively oviposit into large hosts but always accepts both small and large hosts for oviposition upon encountering; (c) in the field, this parasitoid is time-limited, and not egg-limited. On the basis of an optimal diet model, such general host acceptance is shown to be the best strategy.
  • 3 Thus, sex ratio increases with host density for three reasons: the proportion of small hosts encountered in the field increases with increasing host density, small hosts are used for male production, and hosts are always accepted when encountered.

  • 1 Primary resources may affect the structure of species assemblages in upper trophic levels of food webs. These bottom‐up effects may involve important ecological processes that affect pest control. For example, population densities of natural enemies may increase when alternative preys are favoured by a new resource.
  • 2 Ants, particularly Solenopsis geminata Forel (Myrmicinae), are recognized as effective predators of herbivores eggs. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the addition of a primary resource in a banana agroecosystem will increase pest control of the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus Germar (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) by ants.
  • 3 Using stable isotope analyses, we showed that S. geminata used the new resource pathway provided by the addition of a cover crop. This change was revealed by increased δ13C values (13C/12C) in a cover crop treatment (C4 plant) compared with a banana (C3 plant) in bare soil treatment.
  • 4 We also showed that the abundance of S. geminata, as measured with pitfall traps, was 4.8–5.4‐fold higher in the cover crop treatment than in the bare soil treatment. Estimation of egg predation rates was in the range 7.8–70.3%, which occurred in plots with the lowest and highest S. geminata numbers, respectively.
  • 5 The addition of a new primary resource in this system changed the origin of the carbon consumed by predators and increased their densities. The increased ant abundance resulted in increased predation of weevil eggs, which was consistent with our hypothesis. These results will be useful for the design of cropping systems that enhance the biological regulation of pests.

1. Competition between herbivores often plays an important role in population ecology and appears strongest when densities are high or plant production is low. Phytophagous insects are often highly abundant, but relatively few experiments have examined competition between vertebrates and phytophagous insects. 2. In grassland systems worldwide, grasshoppers are often the dominant phytophagous insect, and livestock grazing is a dominant land use. For this study, a novel experiment was conducted examining competition between vertebrates and invertebrates, where both grasshopper densities and sheep grazing were manipulated inside 10‐m2 caged mesocosms during a grasshopper outbreak. We examined how grasshopper densities and the timing of vertebrate herbivory affected grasshopper densities, if the effects of vertebrates on survival and reproduction changed with grasshopper density, and how a naturally occurring grasshopper outbreak affected grasshopper populations in the following year. 3. Densities of grasshoppers at the site peaked at 130 m–2. Food‐limited competition was stronger in treatments with higher grasshopper densities and repeated or late livestock herbivory, leading to reduced survival, femur length, and functional ovarioles, a measure of future reproduction. Strong food‐limited density‐dependent reproduction and survival led to reduced hatching densities in 2001. 4. As competition was typically stronger with high grasshopper densities than with livestock grazing, competition from vertebrates could be relatively less important for phytophagous insect population dynamics during outbreaks. The experiment provides insights into how competition between insect and vertebrate herbivores influences insect population dynamics, and indicates that severe outbreaks can rapidly subside with strong competition from vertebrate and insect herbivores.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Orthodadius (Euorthodadius) calvus Pinder. similar to Orthocladius (Euorthodadius) thienemanni Kieffer. colonized a new gravel substratum in two recirculating stream channels. A maximum population density of 68.621 m-2 was attained after only 16 days. This had fallen to a negligible density by the thirty-third day.
  • 2 Some recruitment occurred over most of the study period (April-May 1981) and no single sharply defined cohort was evident. There was a large range of body lengths within each instar. and considerable overlap between instars. The population density estimates for instars I and II were low compared with instars III and IV.
  • 3 The relationship between instantaneous growth rate (g) and geometric mean length indicated that growth was best described by a Gompertz curve. Growth rate decreased with increasing length from a value of about 40% length day-1 at 2 mm body length to about 5% length day-1 at 9 mm.
  • 4 Growth rates for individual larvae, kept in culture, were very variable with maximum rates close to the values determined from the field data. Mean duration of larval life was 16 days.
  • 5 Estimates of production for the study period ranged from 13.5 g dry wt m-2 (Channel III, size-frequency method) to 34.2 g dry wt m-2 (Channel II, Allen's graphical method, values corrected for non-linear growth).
  • 6 Gut contents were estimated to represent about 55% of the total weight therefore production values should be reduced by this amount.
