Grip force adjustments to changes of object loading induced by external changes of the direction of gravity during discrete arm movements with a grasped object were analyzed during normal and anesthetized finger sensibility. Two subjects were seated upright in a rotatable chair and rotated backwards into a horizontal position during discrete movements with a hand-held instrumented object. The movement direction varied from vertical to horizontal inducing corresponding changes in the direction of gravity, but the orientation of the movement in relation to the body remained unaffected. During discrete vertical movements a maximum of load force occurs early in upward and late in downward movements; during horizontal movements two load force peaks result from both acceleratory and deceleratory phases of the movement. During performance with normal finger sensibility grip force was modulated in parallel with fluctuations of load force during vertical and horizontal movements. The grip force profile adopted to the varying load force profile during the transition from the vertical to the horizontal position. The maximum grip force occurred at the same time of maximum load force irrespective of the movement plane. During both subjects' first experience of digital anesthesia the object slipped from the grasp during rotation to the horizontal plane. During the following trials with anesthetized fingers subjects substantially increased their grip forces, resulting in elevated force ratios between maximum grip and load force. However, grip force was still modulated with the movement-induced load fluctuations and maximum grip force coincided with maximum load force during vertical and horizontal movements. This implies that the elevated force ratio between maximum grip and load force does not alter the feedforward system of grip force control. Cutaneous afferent information from the grasping digits seems to be important for the economic scaling of the grip force magnitude according to the actual loading conditions and for reactive grip force adjustments in response to load perturbations. However, it plays a subordinate role for the precise anticipatory temporal coupling between grip and load forces during voluntary object manipulation.  相似文献

We studied the respiratory output in five subjects exposed to parabolic flights [gravity vector 1, 1.8 and 0 gravity vector in the craniocaudal direction (Gz)] and when switching from sitting to supine (legs bent at the knees). Despite differences in total respiratory compliance (highest at 0 Gz and in supine and minimum at 1.8 Gz), no significant changes in elastic inspiratory work were observed in the various conditions, except when comparing 1.8 Gz with 1 Gz (subjects were in the seated position in all circumstances), although the elastic work had an inverse relationship with total respiratory compliance that was highest at 0 Gz and in supine posture and minimum at 1.8 Gz. Relative to 1 Gz, lung resistance (airways plus lung tissue) increased significantly by 52% in the supine but slightly decreased at 0 Gz. We calculated, for each condition, the tidal volume changes based on the energy available in the preceding phase and concluded that an increase in inspiratory muscle output occurs when respiratory load increases (e.g., going from 0 to 1.8 Gz), whereas a decrease occurs in the opposite case (e.g., from 1.8 to 0 Gz). Despite these immediate changes, ventilation increased, going to 1.8 and 0 Gz (up to approximately 23%), reflecting an increase in mean inspiratory flow rate, tidal volume, and respiratory frequency, while ventilation decreased (approximately -14%), shifting to supine posture (transition time approximately 15 s). These data suggest a remarkable feature in the mechanical arrangement of the respiratory system such that it can maintain the ventilatory output with small changes in inspiratory muscle work in face of considerable changes in configuration and mechanical properties.  相似文献

Most object manipulation tasks involve a series of actions demarcated by mechanical contact events, and gaze is usually directed to the locations of these events as the task unfolds. Typically, gaze foveates the target 200 ms in advance of the contact. This strategy improves manual accuracy through visual feedback and the use of gaze-related signals to guide the hand/object. Many studies have investigated eye-hand coordination in experimental and natural tasks; most of them highlighted a strong link between eye movements and hand or object kinematics. In this experiment, we analyzed gaze strategies in a collision task but in a very challenging dynamical context. Participants performed collisions while they were exposed to alternating episodes of microgravity, hypergravity and normal gravity. First, by isolating the effects of inertia in microgravity, we found that peak hand acceleration marked the transition between two modes of grip force control. Participants exerted grip forces that paralleled load force profiles, and then increased grip up to a maximum shifted after the collision. Second, we found that the oculomotor strategy adapted visual feedback of the controlled object around the collision, as demonstrated by longer durations of fixation after collision in new gravitational environments. Finally, despite large variability of arm dynamics in altered gravity, we found that saccades were remarkably time-locked to the peak hand acceleration in all conditions. In conclusion, altered gravity allowed light to be shed on predictive mechanisms used by the central nervous system to coordinate gaze, hand and grip motor actions during a mixed task that involved transport of an object and high impact loads.  相似文献

Chest wall mechanics was studied in four subjects on changing gravity in the craniocaudal direction (G(z)) during parabolic flights. The thorax appears very compliant at 0 G(z): its recoil changes only from -2 to 2 cmH(2)O in the volume range of 30-70% vital capacity (VC). Increasing G(z) from 0 to 1 and 1.8 G(z) progressively shifted the volume-pressure curve of the chest wall to the left and also caused a fivefold exponential decrease in compliance. For lung volume <30% VC, gravity has an inspiratory effect, but this effect is much larger going from 0 to 1 G(z) than from 1 to 1.8 G(z). For a volume from 30 to 70% VC, the effect is inspiratory going from 0 to 1 G(z) but expiratory from 1 to 1.8 G(z). For a volume greater than approximately 70% VC, gravity always has an expiratory effect. The data suggest that the chest wall does not behave as a linear system when exposed to changing gravity, as the effect depends on both chest wall volume and magnitude of G(z).  相似文献

Aim of the study was to evaluate by transthoracic Doppler the alterations in mitral inflow velocity pattern caused by acute changes in loading conditions occurring during parabolic flights. Each parabola included normogravity (1 Gz, 1 min), mild hypergravity (1.8 Gz, 20 sec), microgravity (0 Gz, 24 sec) and mild hypergravity (1.8 Gz, 20 sec) phases. Pulsed-Doppler images were digitally acquired in 11 unmedicated subjects (46 +/- 5 years), in standing upright position and supine resting. Doppler profiles were semi-automatically traced and inflow parameters extracted and averaged onto three consecutive beats. Only in standing position, significant alterations during microgravity (p<0.05) were noted in several parameters.  相似文献

Use of illicit stimulant drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and ecstasy are a significant worldwide problem. However, little is known about the effect of these drugs on movement. The aim of the current study was to investigate hand function in adults with a history of illicit stimulant use. We hypothesized that prior use of illicit stimulant drugs is associated with abnormal manipulation of objects. The study involved 22 subjects with a history of illicit stimulant use (aged 29±8 yrs; time since last use: 1.8±4.0 yrs) and two control groups comprising 27 non-drug users (aged 25±8 yrs) and 17 cannabis users with no history of stimulant use (aged 22±5 yrs). Each subject completed screening tests (neuropsychological assessment, medical history questionnaire, lifetime drug history questionnaire, and urine drug screen) prior to gripping and lifting a light-weight object with the dominant right hand. Horizontal grip force, vertical lift force, acceleration, and first dorsal interosseus electromyographic (EMG) activity were recorded during three trials. In trial one, peak grip force was significantly greater in the stimulant group (12.8±3.9 N) than in the control groups (non-drug: 10.3±4.6 N; cannabis: 9.4±2.9 N, P<0.022). However, peak grip force did not differ between groups in trials two and three. The results suggest that individuals with a history of stimulant use overestimate the grip force required to manipulate a novel object but, are able to adapt grip force in subsequent lifts. The results suggest that movement dysfunction may be an unrecognized consequence of illicit stimulant use.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated the control of grip force when manipulating an object with an extremely small mass using a precision grip, although some related information has been provided by studies conducted in an unusual microgravity environment. Grip-load force coordination was examined while healthy adults (N = 17) held a moveable instrumented apparatus with its mass changed between 6 g and 200 g in 14 steps, with its grip surface set as either sandpaper or rayon. Additional measurements of grip-force-dependent finger-surface contact area and finger skin indentation, as well as a test of weight discrimination, were also performed. For each surface condition, the static grip force was modulated in parallel with load force while holding the object of a mass above 30 g. For objects with mass smaller than 30 g, on the other hand, the parallel relationship was changed, resulting in a progressive increase in grip-to-load force (GF/LF) ratio. The rayon had a higher GF/LF force ratio across all mass levels. The proportion of safety margin in the static grip force and normalized moment-to-moment variability of the static grip force were also elevated towards the lower end of the object mass for both surfaces. These findings indicate that the strategy of grip force control for holding objects with an extremely small mass differs from that with a mass above 30 g. The data for the contact area, skin indentation, and weight discrimination suggest that a decreased level of cutaneous feedback signals from the finger pads could have played some role in a cost function in efficient grip force control with low-mass objects. The elevated grip force variability associated with signal-dependent and internal noises, and anticipated inertial force on the held object due to acceleration of the arm and hand, could also have contributed to the cost function.  相似文献

Aim of the study was to test the feasibility of transthoracic real-time 3D (Philips) echocardiography (RT3D) during parabolic flight, to allow direct measurement of heart chambers volumes modifications during the parabola. One RT3D dataset corresponding to one cardiac cycle was acquired at each gravity phase (1 Gz, 1.8 Gz, 0 Gz, 1.8 Gz) during breath-hold in 8 unmedicated normal subjects (41 +/- 8 years old) in standing upright position. Preliminary results, obtained by semi-automatically tracing left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) endocardial contours in multiple views (Tomtec), showed a significant (p<0.05) reduction, compared to 1 Gz, of LV and LA volumes with 1.8 Gz, and a significant increase with 0 Gz. The superposition principle suggests that motor commands can be divided into individually controlled components that summate to produce complex motor actions. Previous studies have examined the validity of this principle in human grasping by changing moments acting on an object about a single anatomically-defined axis and asking subjects to hold the object while their forearm was constrained. Superposition was reflected as separate control of the grip force and moments required to prevent object slip and maintain orientation. The objective of this study was to examine the robustness of this principle by: 1) expanding the range of tasks to include those where moments act on an object with respect to moment arms not necessarily in line with the anatomically-defined axes; 2) asking subjects to hold the object in an unconstrained manner. Ten subjects were asked to lift and hold an object vertically under eighteen moment conditions. Force and moment data from all digits were analysed using principal components analysis (PCA). Different PCAs were run for variable sets corresponding to moments about the long axis of the forearm (M(x)), the vertical (M(y)) and grip (M(z)) axes, and for the entire dataset (M(3D)). The PCA showed grip force and moment variables on separate PCs for the M(x), M(y), and M(3D) variable sets. The M(3D) PCA also showed a separation of variables corresponding to moments about each anatomically-defined axis. Thus, the present results show that the superposition principle holds during natural manipulation of an object experiencing external moments outside the anatomically-defined axes.  相似文献

The time course of changes in the hand muscle activity and the grip force before the hit of an object falling from different heights into a cup held between the thumb and the forefinger was analyzed in three variants of the experiment: (1) the subject saw the object falling; (2) the subject did not see the object falling but initiated the fall; and (3) the subject had no information on either the falling or its start. In the third variant, the muscle activity and the grip force changed in response to the object hitting the cup. In the second variant, the muscle activity and the grip force began to change 200–280 ms before the hit, this time being independent of height from which the object fell. In the first variant, the anticipatory changes began 150 ms after the object started falling and did not depend on the height of the falling within the rage 30–50 cm. If the object fell from a height of 70–105 cm, the changes in the muscle activity and the grip force began a fixed time before the object hit the cup, which did not depend on the height from which the object fell. Thus, when the object fall from small heights, the timing of the increase in the grip force was mainly determined by the moment when the object began moving; at large heights, the increase in the grip force was related to the presumed moment of the hit.  相似文献

Summary Previous videomicroscopy ofChara rhizoids during parabolic flights of rockets showed that the weightless statoliths moved basipetally. A hypothesis was offered that the removal of gravity force disturbed the initial balance between this force and the basipetally acting forces generated in a dynamic interaction of statoliths with microfilaments (MFs). The prediction of this hypothesis that the statoliths would not be displaced basipetally during the microgravity phase (MG-phase) after disorganizing the MFs was tested by videomicroscopy of a rhizoid treated with cytochalasin D (CD) immediately before the flight. The prediction was fully supported by the flight experiment. Additionally, by chemical fixation of many rhizoids at the end of the MG-phase it was shown that all rhizoids treated with CD before the flight had statoliths at the same location, i.e., sedimented on the apical cell wall, while all untreated rhizoids had statoliths considerably displaced basipetally from their normal position. The explanation of the mechanism of the response to gravity changes is of great importance for the determination of the capacity of human subjects to adapt to the load of gravitational stress. Therefore several studies were performed to investigate the activity of endocrine system, since the hormones are involved in the regulation of physiological functions and metabolic processes. However the studies of endocrine system activity during altered gravity conditions, especially during the weightlessness are influenced by the several interventions in biomedical observations due to operational program of astronauts, wide variability in individual response and tolerance, use of extensive countermeasures, differences in the type of space missions and in the studies after landing also a hypergravity effect at landing and variability in postflight readaptation process. The significant changes of plasma insulin and glucose levels were observed in astronauts during space flights and in the first days of recovery period. In the first inflight period plasma insulin levels were increased, unchanged or decreased however after 4-5 weeks of exposure to weightlessness a decrease of insulin plasma levels were noted. After space flights an increase of plasma insulin levels were demonstrated in experimental animals and in human subjects. Since plasma insulin level is considered as most important factor involved in the regulation for insulin receptors in target tissues, an investigation of insulin receptors in various tissues was performed in rats exposed to space flight or to hypokinesia (model used for simulation of some effects of microgravity).  相似文献

Extended durations of spaceflight have been shown to be deleterious on an organismic level; however, mechanisms underlying cellular sensitivity to the gravitational environment remain to be elucidated. The majority of the gravitational studies to date indicates that cell regulatory pathways may be influenced by their gravitational environment. Still, few cell biology experiments have been performed in space flight and even fewer experiments have been repeated on subsequent flights. With flight opportunities on STS-50, 542 and 57, Sf9 cells were flown in the BioServe Fluids Processing Apparatus and cell proliferation was measured with and without exposure to a cell regulatory sialogycopeptide (CeReS) inhibitor. Results from these flights indicate that the Sf9 cells grew comparable to ground controls, that the CeReS inhibitor bound to its specific receptor, and that its signal transduction cascade was not gravity sensitive.  相似文献

Studies have shown that internal representations of manipulations of objects with asymmetric mass distributions that are generated within a specific orientation are not generalizable to novel orientations, i.e., subjects fail to prevent object roll on their first grasp-lift attempt of the object following 180° object rotation. This suggests that representations of these manipulations are specific to the reference frame in which they are formed. However, it is unknown whether that reference frame is specific to the hand, the body, or both, because rotating the object 180° modifies the relation between object and body as well as object and hand. An alternative, untested explanation for the above failure to generalize learned manipulations is that any rotation will disrupt grasp performance, regardless if the reference frame in which the manipulation was learned is maintained or modified. We examined the effect of rotations that (1) maintain and (2) modify relations between object and body, and object and hand, on the generalizability of learned two-digit manipulation of an object with an asymmetric mass distribution. Following rotations that maintained the relation between object and body and object and hand (e.g., rotating the object and subject 180°), subjects continued to use appropriate digit placement and load force distributions, thus generating sufficient compensatory moments to minimize object roll. In contrast, following rotations that modified the relation between (1) object and hand (e.g. rotating the hand around to the opposite object side), (2) object and body (e.g. rotating subject and hand 180°), or (3) both (e.g. rotating the subject 180°), subjects used the same, yet inappropriate digit placement and load force distribution, as those used prior to the rotation. Consequently, the compensatory moments were insufficient to prevent large object rolls. These findings suggest that representations of learned manipulation of objects with asymmetric mass distributions are specific to the body- and hand-reference frames in which they were learned.  相似文献

This article proposes a technique to calculate the coefficient of friction for the fingertip- object interface. Twelve subjects (6 males and 6 females) participated in two experiments. During the first experiment (the imposed displacement method), a 3-D force sensor was moved horizontally while the subjects applied a specified normal force (4 N, 8 N, 12 N) on the surface of a sensor covered with different materials (sandpaper, cotton, rayon, polyester, and silk).The normal force and the tangential force (i.e., the force due to the sensor motion) were recorded. The coefficient of friction (mu(d)) was calculated as the ratio between the tangential force and the normal force. In the second experiment (the beginning slip method), a small instrumented object was gripped between the index finger and the thumb, held stationary in the air, and then allowed to drop. The weight (200 g, 500 g, and 1,000 g) and the surface (sandpaper, cotton, rayon, polyester, and silk) in contact with the digits varied across trials. The same sensor as in the first experiment was used to record the normal force (in a horizontal direction) and the tangential force (in the vertical direction). The slip force (i.e., the minimal normal force or grip force necessary to prevent slipping) was estimated as the force at the moment when the object just began to slip. The coefficient of friction was calculated as the ratio between the tangential force and the slip force. The results show that (1) the imposed displacement method is reliable; (2) except sandpaper, for all other materials the coefficient of friction did not depend on the normal force; (3) the skin-sandpaper coefficient of friction was the highest mu(d) =0.96+/-0.09 (for 4-N normal force) and the skin-rayon rayon coefficient of friction was the smallest mu(d) =0.36+/-0.10; (4) no significant difference between the coefficients of friction determined with the imposed displacement method and the beginning slip method was observed. We view the imposed displacement technique as having an advantage as compared with the beginning slip method, which is more cumbersome (e.g., dropped object should be protected from impacts) and prone to subjective errors owing to the uncertainty in determining the instance of the slip initiation (i.e., impeding sliding).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate precision grip impairment caused by a lower median nerve block at the wrist. The median nerve block was achieved by injecting bupivacaine hydrochloride into the carpal tunnel, which acutely simulated a median neuropathy. Seven healthy male subjects were instructed to grip, lift, and hold an instrumented handle within 60s using precision grip. The same tasks were performed before and after the nerve block. Force and torque data were recorded using two miniature 6-component force/torque transducers. The precision grip was quantified by the safety margin (i.e. the difference between the actual grip force and the minimal grip force to keep the object from dropping), the variation of grip force, and the migration area of center of pressure (i.e. the area defined by the center of pressure at a digit-transducer surface while holding the handle). Two subjects were unable to complete the precision grip tasks after the nerve block, and their data were excluded from the analyses. The median nerve block caused significant increases (P<0.05) in the safety margin of the grip force (>50%), the grip force variation (>80%), and the area of center of pressure migration (>250%). Median nerve block at the wrist impairs the fine motor control during precision grip. Our results corroborate the important role played by sensory function in hand fine motor control. Clinically, the measures related to precision grip have the potential to quantify impairment of hand function caused by neuromuscular disorders, to monitor the progress of a hand disorder, and to evaluate the efficacy of a treatment or rehabilitation procedure.  相似文献

The morphological changes of several grasses, dicotyledons and thallial plants to decreasing increments of gravity from the normal 1 g to 0 g were determined. The various levels of simulated hypogravity were obtained by regulation of the angles of the rotating clinostats. Reaction to simulated hypo-gravity is evidenced by leaf, petiole, stem and coleoptile epi-nasty, root hyponasty in the leafy plants and cereal seedlings and increased lobulation in gametophytes. Threshold response for the gametophyte, marigold, bean and pepper plants was approximately 0.67 x g while that for the wheat, corn and oat seedlings was 0.17xg. The intensity of the epinastic response was found to be inversely related to the gravitational force. With leafy plants, significant responses to reduced gravity are shown only in the presence of light perhaps influencing their ability to synthesize auxin.  相似文献

Clinostat is an effective, ground-based tool which can be used to verify data from space flight, and to test hypotheses and experimental conditions for eventual space flights. Rotation in clinostat appears to mimic the microgravity environment by nulling the gravitational vector by continuous averaging. In the present study, we exposed osteoblast-like ROS 17/2.8 cells to a vector-averaged gravity environment in a clinostat and found that the cells undergo apoptotic death during the first 24 hr of clino-rotation. We suggest that apoptosis might be one of the mechanisms for reduced bone formation as observed in actual space flights.  相似文献

The volume-pressure relationship of the lung was studied in six subjects on changing the gravity vector during parabolic flights and body posture. Lung recoil pressure decreased by approximately 2.7 cmH(2)O going from 1 to 0 vertical acceleration (G(z)), whereas it increased by approximately 3.5 cmH(2)O in 30 degrees tilted head-up and supine postures. No substantial change was found going from 1 to 1.8 G(z). Matching the changes in volume-pressure relationships of the lung and chest wall (previous data), results in a decrease in functional respiratory capacity of approximately 580 ml at 0 G(z) relative to 1 G(z) and of approximately 1,200 ml going to supine posture. Microgravity causes a decrease in lung and chest wall recoil pressures as it removes most of the distortion of lung parenchyma and thorax induced by changing gravity field and/or posture. Hypergravity does not greatly affect respiratory mechanics, suggesting that mechanical distortion is close to maximum already at 1 G(z). The end-expiratory volume during quiet breathing corresponds to the mechanical functional residual capacity in each condition.  相似文献
