A male child, maintained in a controlled environment, was monitored each month for bacteria, yeasts, and filamentous fungi recovered from the mouth, nasal passages, feces, and nine body surface sites. Three natural microbial categories became apparent. Incident microorganisms were recovered from within the isolator but did not establish permanent residence. Of the 53 incident types isolated, 20 were filamentous fungi and 4 were yeasts. Some genera, such as Fusobacterium, Lactobacillus, Neisseria, and Rothia, which were commonly found in the reference group, did not become permanent inhabitants. Transient microorganisms were repeatedly recovered but could not be demonstrated within the isolated environment at the end of the study. The loss of only a few of the 19 transient species could be associated with antimicrobial therapy. Permanent microorganisms consisted of Pencillium citrinum and 17 bacterial types, of which alpha-hemolytic streptococci, Staphylococcus edpidermidis subgroups II and V, Micrococcus groups 1 and 2, Clostridium bifermentans, and Propionibacterium acnes were recovered throughout the entire 9 years of the study. The number of CFUs recovered from each sample type was generally not unlike that from the reference group of healthy male adults. Also, the number of different aerobic species recovered from the feces was within the normal range of that of the reference group. In contrast, the number of different species recovered from all other samples was less than that commonly found in the reference group.  相似文献

Yeasts and filamentous fungi carried by the gynes of leaf-cutting ants   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Insect-associated microbes exhibit a wide range of interactions with their hosts. One example of such interactions is the insect-driven dispersal of microorganisms, which plays an essential role in the ecology of several microbes. To study dispersal of microorganisms by leaf-cutting ants (Formicidae: Attini), we applied culture-dependent methods to identify the filamentous fungi and yeasts found in two different body parts of leaf-cutting ant gynes: the exoskeleton and the infrabuccal pocket. The gynes use the latter structure to store a pellet of the ants’ symbiotic fungus during nest founding. Many filamentous fungi (n = 142) and yeasts (n = 19) were isolated from the gynes’ exoskeleton. In contrast, only seven filamentous fungi and three yeasts isolates were recovered from the infrabuccal pellets, suggesting an efficient mechanism utilized by the gynes to prevent contamination of the symbiotic fungus inoculum. The genus Cladosporium prevailed (78%) among filamentous fungi whereas Aureobasidium, Candida and Cryptococcus prevailed among yeasts associated with gynes. Interestingly, Escovopsis, a specialized fungal pathogen of the leaf-cutting ant-fungus symbiosis, was not isolated from the body parts or from infrabuccal pellets of any gynes sampled. Our results suggest that gynes of the leaf-cutter ants Atta laevigata and A. capiguara do not vertically transmit any particular species of yeasts or filamentous fungi during the foundation of a new nest. Instead, fungi found in association with gynes have a cosmopolitan distribution, suggesting they are probably acquired from the environment and passively dispersed during nest foundation. The possible role of these fungi for the attine ant–microbial symbiosis is discussed.  相似文献

Mediterranean ecosystems have not been consistently investigated as natural habitats for microbes in general, and fungi in particular. Here we present the results of a survey of epiphytic mycobiota (filamentous fungi and yeasts) on the phylloplane of selected plants in the Arrábida Natural Park, an ecosystem of Mediterranean characteristics in Portugal, using conventional culture-dependent isolation methods. Leaves from the species Acer monspessulanum and Quercus faginea (deciduous trees) and Cistus albidus, Pistacia lentiscus, and Osyris quadripartita (evergreen shrubs) were collected twice a year for two consecutive years, at two distinct locations of Serra da Arrábida: the more humid northern slope and the drier southern slope. A total of 1029 strains of filamentous fungi and 540 strains of yeasts were isolated, which represented at least 36 and 46 distinct species, respectively. Total counts were higher on the plants from the northern slope and there was a general increase from spring to autumn, notably on the deciduous trees for the yeasts. Plant species that had higher numbers of leaf colonists (A. monspessulanum, C. albidus, and Q. faginea) also yielded a wider range of species. Among the filamentous fungi there was a predominance of species of ascomycetous affinity, whereas basidiomycetous species dominated among yeast isolates. Some of the taxa recovered were common to other phylloplane studies (e.g., ubiquitous molds and yeasts such as Cladosporium spp. and Cryptococcus spp., respectively), but less common species were also found, some of which appeared to represent undescribed taxa. Interestingly, a few species seemed to be associated with a particular plant, notably in the case of the evergreen shrub C. albidus. However, for a considerable number of fungi and yeasts the same taxon was recovered throughout the year from more than one plant and at both sites, suggesting that such species might be genuine phylloplane inhabitants (or at least of aerial plant surfaces) even though they appeared not to display host specificity.  相似文献

Bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi colonizing immature, mature and senescing primary leaves of field grown Beta vulgaris (sugar beet) were analysed over a complete growing season. Greatest microbial numbers were detected on senescing primary leaves and these numbers increased over most of the season. The number of colonizers detected on mature leaves was found to be stable over most of the study.Filamentous fungi and yeasts were identified to the genus level and the communities found to have greatest diversity during the summer months. There was no consistent pattern of diversity according to leaf type. Two genera of filamentous fungi, Cladosporium and Alternaria and two yeast genera, Cryptococcus and Sporobolomyces were the most numerous fungal populations isolated. Only 8 filamentous fungi and 3 yeast genera were commonly isolated on PDA (potato dextrose agar).Bacterial strains (1236) were isolated on Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) agar and identified to species, or in some cases sub-species level, by analysis of their fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiles. Isolated bacteria were grouped into 78 named and 37 unnamed species clusters. Greatest number of bacterial species were isolated from young plants and leaves, sampled during the autumn months. Bacterial community diversity was lowest in mid-summer and winter months. Pseudomonas was the most commonly isolated genus and Erwinia herbicola the most common species. P. aureofaciens was the only species isolated from soil that was also isolated from the phyllosphere of B. vulgaris throughout the season.  相似文献

Mycological profile of crew during 56-day simulated orbital flight   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mycological analyses were made on specimens obtained from the skin, oral rinse, urine, and feces of three subjects participating in a 56 day Skylab simulation test. Samples were taken over a 175 day period divided into three phases consisting of a prechamber, intrachamber, and postchamber period. A total of 69 species of filamentous fungi and 22 species of yeast and yeast-like fungi were recovered and identified. There was a marked decrease in the isolation incidence of both the filamentous and yeast and yeast-like fungi during the intrachamber period. This, taken with the fact that 71% of the filamentous species and 55% of the yeast and yeast-like species were isolated no more than twice, reflects the transitory nature of the relationship between the human body and most fungi. However, there was a relative increase in the potential pathogens Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis during the intrachamber period. Over 50% of all fungi recovered were isolated from the nasal and oral cavities. There was no evidence of intercrew transfer of a particular species during the intrachamber period nor was there any evidence of microbial shock during the postchamber period.  相似文献

Summary In the search for additional techniques for determining fungal populations of dairy products, 23 species of filamentous fungi and 25 species of yeasts were recovered from a variety of raw, pasteurized, and processed dairy products. The usefulness of media containing rose bengal and antibiotics is indicated. The occurrence of a number of the species found is discussed together with some of the results of physiological studies of yeasts used in species characterization.  相似文献

The effect of air pollution on total phyllospheric microflora from two species of the epiphytic neotropical genus Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae) was studied by comparing unpolluted plants living in a forest (Escazú, San José) with polluted ones from an urban site of Costa Rica (San José city). Dilutions of homogenized leaf samples were plated on media suitable for each microbial group. For each microorganism group, total counts were performed and purified strains of randomly chosen colonies were identified. There was a global reduction in the number of living microorganisms due to pollution effects, especially yeasts and bacteria, while nitrogen-fixing microorganisms and fungi were less affected. Our results showed that the phyllosphere microflora of Tillandsia plants living in a tropical urban environment changes in terms of number and species composition of yeasts and bacteria with respect to plants living in unpolluted environment.  相似文献

Tuber spp. are ectomycorrhizal ascomycetes that produce subterranean ascomata known as truffles. Truffles can be regarded as complex microhabitats hosting bacteria and yeasts. In this paper we show that guest filamentous fungi are also associated to truffle ascomata, regardless of the Tuber spp., and report the morpho-molecular characterization of seven truffle-hosted mycelia isolated from healthy and intact Tuber ascomata. Some of these isolates were shown to be related to the fungal endophytes of plants. Interestingly, the truffle-hosted mycelia grew stuck to the hyphal wall of their partner when co-cultivated with the Tuber borchii mycelium, but not when co-cultivated with the test species Agaricus macrosporus. The present data suggest that guest filamentous fungi can be added to the list of truffle-interacting microorganisms.  相似文献

Summary Addition of 6.6 ml /liter of cygon (dimethoate, commercial) to acidified malt extract agar (Difco YM medium) suppressed mite activity completely and did not appear to affect the number or species of yeasts isolated. Rose Bengal suppressed filamentous fungi to some extent.  相似文献

A screening of 416 microorganisms from different taxonomical groups (bacteria, actinomycetes, yeasts, and filamentous fungi) has been performed looking for active strains in the stereoselective oxidation of secondary alcohols. The working collection was composed of 71 bacterial strains, 45 actinomycetes, 59 yeasts, 60 basidiomycetes, 33 marine fungi, and 148 filamentous fungi. All microorganisms selected were mesophilic. Yeasts were the most active microbial group in the whole-cell-catalyzed oxidation. Williopsis californica, Williopsis saturnus, and Pachysolen tannophilus were the strains of greatest interest, both as growing cells and as resting cells. The oxidation of the alcohols takes place when cells are in the stationary growth phase (after 48 h of culture). These three strains are S-stereoselective for the oxidation of racemic secondary alkanols and show stereospecificity in the oxidation of menthol or neo-menthol, whereas iso-menthol is not oxidized. In the case of the 1-tetrahydronaphtol enantiomers, only the S-enantiomer is oxidized. The three strains were immobilized by entrapment using agarose and agar from algae of the Gracilaria genus. The agarose derivatives displayed significant improvement in the stereospecificity of the reactions.  相似文献
