Birds require additional resources for raising young, and the breeding currency hypothesis predicts that insectivorous species exploit large soft‐bodied prey during the breeding season, but shift to small, likely hard‐bodied, prey during the non‐breeding season. To test this hypothesis, we examined prey use by Cerulean Warblers (Setophaga cerulea), foliage‐gleaning Nearctic‐Neotropical migrants, during the breeding and non‐breeding seasons. We collected data on foraging behavior during the breeding season (including observations of prey items fed to young) in upland mixed‐oak forest in southeastern Ohio in 2009 and 2010 and, during the non‐breeding season, in shade coffee in the Cordillera de Merida, Venezuela, in 2008–2009. Cerulean Warblers captured 7% more large prey (visible prey extending beyond the bill) during the breeding than the non‐breeding season, but foraged at similar rates during both seasons. Large, soft‐bodied prey appeared to be especially important for feeding young. We found that adults delivered large prey on >50% of provisioning visits to nests and 69% of identifiable large prey fed to nestlings were greenish larvae (likely Lepidoptera or caterpillars) that camouflage against leaves where they would tend to be captured by foliage‐gleaning birds. Availability of specific taxa appeared to influence tree species foraging preferences. As reported by other researchers, we found that Cerulean Warblers selected trees in the genus Carya for foraging and our examination of caterpillar counts from the central Appalachian Mountains (Butler and Strazanac 2000 ) showed that caterpillars with greenish coloration, especially Baileya larvae, may be almost twice as abundant on Carya than Quercus. Our results provide evidence for the breeding currency hypothesis, and highlight the importance of caterpillars to a foliage‐gleaning migrant warbler of conservation concern.  相似文献

Diets reflect important ecological interactions, but are challenging to quantify for foliage‐gleaning birds. We used regurgitated stomach samples from five primarily insectivorous species of long‐distance migrant warblers (Parulidae) wintering in two moderate‐elevation shade coffee farms in Jamaica to assess both foraging opportunism and prey resource partitioning. Our results, based primarily on 6120 prey items in 80 stomach samples collected during a one‐week period in March 2000, confirm opportunism. The diets of all five warblers, including American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla), Black‐and‐White Warblers (Mniotilta varia), Black‐throated Blue Warblers (S. caerulescens), Northern Parulas (S. americana), and Prairie Warblers (S. discolor), overlapped strongly based on consumption of the same prey types, even many of the same prey species (4 of 10 interspecific overlaps >0.9, range = 0.74–0.97). Moreover, all five species fed on similarly small, often patchily distributed prey, including coffee berry borers (Hypothenemus hampei; Coleoptera, Curculionidae). Nonetheless, permutational multivariate analysis of variance also revealed that the diets of these species differed significantly, primarily with respect to prey mobility (winged vs. sessile); American Redstarts fed on the most mobile prey, and Northern Parulas on the least mobile prey and a relatively restricted set of prey taxa compared to the other four species of warblers. Overall, our results suggest both dietary opportunism consistent with a migratory life‐history, and interspecific resource partitioning consistent with differences in morphology and foraging behavior during a food‐limited season. Having provided evidence of the three necessary conditions, namely intraspecific competition, resource limitation, and interspecific overlap in resource use, the results of our study, in combination with those of other studies, also provide evidence of interspecific competition among wintering migrant insectivores. We thus argue that diffuse interspecific exploitative food competition may be more important than previously recognized.  相似文献

ABSTRACT On the breeding grounds, migratory birds have limited time to breed and molt before autumn migration. However, few studies of long‐distance migrants have examined the phenology of these events to determine what life‐history trade‐offs might result if these activities overlap. From 2000 to 2007, I used banding data to determine the timing of migration, breeding, and primary molt for Yellow Warblers (Dendroica petechia), Yellow‐rumped Warblers (D. coronata coronata), American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla), Ovenbirds (Seiurus aurocapilla), and Canada Warblers (Wilsonia canadensis) at a study site in Alberta, Canada. Hatching date did not differ among species (P= 0.63), with means ranging from 27 June to 3 July. All species began primary molt between 12 July and 18 July, near the expected fledging date of offspring, and therefore all species exhibited overlap between postfledging parental care and molt. The duration of primary molt ranged from 28 d for Canada Warblers to 69 d for Yellow‐rumped Warblers. Yellow Warblers, Yellow‐rumped Warblers, and American Redstarts began autumn migration having completed about 50% of their primary molt. However, Ovenbirds departed when 21% of molt was complete, and Canada Warblers departed 2 d after completing molt. For all five species of warblers, molt did not overlap with nest‐bound breeding activities. However, molt did overlap with both postfledging care and migration. This suggests that initiating migration as soon as possible is important, possibly because earlier arrival on the wintering grounds may improve access to high quality winter habitat. Overall, warblers may maximize individual fitness by combining life‐history events that result in overlapping portions of the breeding cycle, molt, and migration.  相似文献

Capsule Migrant Willow Warblers occupy more woodland types and occur at higher densities than ecologically‐similar resident Afrotropical warblers.

Aims To compare population densities of Willow Warblers and eremomelas in adjacent acacia, mopane and miombo woodlands, and assess the abundance of potential invertebrate prey in each habitat type, in order to investigate whether Palearctic migrants use more open habitats and are more flexible in habitat use than their Afrotropical counterparts in the same feeding guild.

Methods Using distance sampling we carried out four replicated sets of point counts in acacia woodland and three sets of counts in miombo and mopane between December 1999 and February 2000. We noted the tree species in which we saw warblers foraging and took beating‐tray samples of potential arthropod prey present on tree foliage in each of the three habitats.

Results Willow Warbler density in acacia woodland increased from 1.80 ± 0.54 (se) birds/ha in early December to 7.15 ± 1.41 birds/ha in late January after influxes of later arrivals. Densities of Willow Warblers in miombo and mopane were much lower (1.14 ± 0.28 and 0.38 ± 0.23 birds/ha, respectively) and did not show significant changes. Burnt‐necked Eremomelas averaged 0.74 ± 0.34 birds/ha in acacia woodland, and in miombo densities of Green‐capped and Yellow‐bellied Eremomelas were 0.23 ± 0.17 and 0.34 ± 0.26 birds/ha, respectively. Densities in mopane were too low to estimate reliably. Willow Warblers and Green‐capped Eremomelas showed some apparent preferences in tree species used for foraging but differences in tree use were not obviously related to the abundance of arthropod taxa present as potential prey.

Conclusion Willow Warblers occupied more habitats at greater density than similar Afrotropical warblers. They appear to favour acacia, but their settlement patterns and the reasons for disparities between densities of immigrants and residents are unclear.  相似文献

Much of the remaining “forest” vegetation in eastern Chiapas, Mexico is managed for coffee production. In this region coffee is grown under either the canopy of natural forest or under a planted canopy dominated by Inga spp. Despite the large differences in diversity of dominant plant species, both planted and rustic shade coffee plantations support a high overall diversity of bird species; we recorded approximately 105 species in each plantation type on fixed radius point counts. We accumulated a combined species list of 180 species on repeatedly surveyed transects through both coffee plantation types. These values are exceeded regionally only by moist tropical forest. Of the habitats surveyed, shade coffee was second only to acacia groves in the abundance and diversity of Nearctic migrants. The two plantation types have similar bird species lists and both are similar in composition to the dominant woodland—mixed pine-oak. Both types of shade coffee plantation habitats differ from other local habitats in supporting highly seasonal bird populations. Survey numbers almost double during the dry season—an increase that is found in omnivorous migrants and omnivorous, frugivorous, and nectarivorous resident species. Particularly large influxes were found for Tennessee warblers (Vermivora peregrina) and northern orioles (Icterus galbula) in Inga dominated plantations.  相似文献

Cerulean Warblers (Setophaga cerulea) are a species with declining populations that exhibit regional variation in habitat selection and demographic rates. The Ozark region of the south‐central United States likely provides important habitat for Cerulean Warblers, but little is known about their breeding biology in that region. We studied Cerulean Warblers in riparian forests of the Ozarks of Arkansas from 2018 to 2020. We assessed multi‐scale habitat selection for vegetative and topographic features, documented their breeding biology, estimated within‐season and annual apparent survival, and estimated territory sizes. We found that Cerulean Warblers selected riparian habitat characterized by large‐diameter trees across all spatial scales. Contrary to the results of previous studies, males appeared to avoid white oaks (Quercus spp., Section Quercus) at the territory scale, but this avoidance may reflect an underlying preference for riparian habitat. Our logistic‐exposure estimate of nest survival (0.32; 85% confidence interval: 0.21–0.46) was similar to the median of estimates reported in previous studies. Our results indicate that maintaining riparian forests with large trees is important to provide suitable habitat for Cerulean Warblers in the Ozark region. Because of similarities in habitat selection among regions, some management practices from other populations, including retaining large trees and promoting a heterogeneous canopy structure, may be useful for managing for Cerulean Warblers in riparian areas of the Ozarks. However, selection for topography and tree species by Cerulean Warblers in our study also suggests that region‐specific management strategies will be beneficial. Finally, our demographic rate estimates for this population should prove valuable in future full‐annual‐cycle population modeling efforts.  相似文献

Abstract

Five-minute stationary counts of birds at Kowhai Bush over 17 months suggest that the scores for grey warblers and chaffinches may reflect vocal conspicuousness, rather than abundance, and that the scores for shining cuckoos, goldfinches, and redpolls may reflect vocal and visual conspicuousness in combination. Counts in three types of kanuka forest show that cuckoos, robins, and bellbirds favoured the more dense and diverse suocessional stages; that riflemen, brown creepers, fantails, chaffinches, goldfinches, and redpolls were most abundant in less mature habitats; and that warblers and silvereyes were almost uniformly common. Cuckoos and robins overlapped the most in use of habitat, robins and redpolls the least. For both warblers and robins, indices of abundance varied between two of the habitats in proportion to the densities of resident adults, permitting calibration of the indices. Excepting creepers and robins, native species were apparently less abundant at Kowhai Bush than in climax forest near Reefton. At Kowhai Bush in winter, creepers, warblers, and silvereyes (three of the four small native gleaners of foliage) collected prey almost entirely from kanuka, the dominant tree. Warblers foraged on 80% of occasions from living foliage, whereas creepers fed almost equally from trunks, branches, twigs, and leaves, and silvereyes concentrated on leaves and trunks. Creepers and silvereyes overlapped the most in use of feeding stations. Also, they were exclusively gleaners, whereas warblers caught prey on 40% of occasions by hovering. Warblers gleaned only in the upright position, but creepers and silvereyes often gleaned from vertical surfaces or by hanging upside down. The greatest overlap in feeding behaviour was between creepers and silvereyes. Data for four of the five small native insectivores show that warblers were half as heavy as creepers and silvereyes, and lighter on average than fantails. The tail was longer than the wing in fantails, shorter than the wing in silvereyes, and equal to the wing in warblers and creepers. The ratio of wing length to tarsometatarsus length was greatest for fantails (3.4), as befits an aerial feeder. Warblers, silvereyes, and fantails had bills that were wider than deep; the creeper’s was slightly deeper than wide. Silvereyes had the longest bill, and creepers the longest tarsometatarsus. Indices of morphological difference show that silvereyes and creepers differed least.  相似文献

I examined the effects of two farm management variables, shade‐tree species and crop structure, on the winter (dry season) arthropod and bird communities in a Jamaican shade coffee plantation. Birds and canopy arthropods were more abundant in areas of the plantation shaded by the tree Inga vera than by Pseudalbizia berteroana. The abundance of arthropods (potential pests) on the coffee crop, however, was unaffected by shade‐tree species. Canopy arthropods, particularly psyllids (Homoptera), were especially abundant on Inga in late winter, when it was producing new leaves and nectar‐rich flowers. Insectivorous and nectarivorous birds showed the strongest response to Inga; thus the concentration of birds in Inga may be a response to abundant food. Coffee‐tree arthropod abundance was much lower than in the shade trees and was affected little by farm management variables, although arthropods tended to be more abundant in dense (unpruned) than open (recently pruned) areas of the plantation. Perhaps in response, leaf‐gleaning insectivorous birds were more abundant in dense areas. These results underscore that although some shade coffee plantations may provide habitat for arthropod and bird communities, differences in farm management practices can significantly affect their abundances. Furthermore, this study provides evidence suggesting that bird communities in coffee respond to spatial variation in arthropod availability. I conclude that /. vera is a better shade tree than P. berteroana, but a choice in crop structures is less clear due to changing effects of prune management over time.  相似文献

A major uncertainty in automated radio‐telemetry studies of small birds is the detection range of receiving antennas. We compared simultaneous daytime detections (± 30 s) by automated and manual radio‐telemetry to assess detection probability and the proportion of transmissions detected for birds on migratory stopover as a function of distance, foraging guild (Black‐throated Blue Warblers, Setophaga caerulescens, and Yellow‐rumped Warblers, Dendroica coronata coronata, represented mid‐canopy foliage gleaners and White‐throated Sparrows, Zonotrichia albicollis, represented a ground forager), habitat type, meteorological variables, tower antenna number (1–4), and the position of a bird relative to the receiving antenna's bearing (offset angle). Our study was conducted at a migratory stopover site in southern Ontario, Canada. Most detections were in dense to sparse forest, and all individuals were within 1.03 km of the automated receiving station. Daily detection probability was near 100% for both foraging guilds. However, within 30 s before and after a manual radio‐telemetry location was made, detection probability and the proportion of transmissions detected by automated radio‐telemetry declined with distance, was higher for warblers than sparrows, and was lowest for 90° offset angles. Our results suggest that when research goals do not require detections with high temporal frequency, e.g., estimation of departure date or daily departure probability, our study design had an effective detection range of at least 1 km. However, where temporal precision is required, e.g., to investigate movements and changes in activity levels during stopover, detection range was ~300 m for ground‐foraging sparrows and 600 m for mid‐canopy foraging warblers, which is much lower than the presumed detection range of antennas under optimal conditions (15 km). This corresponds to a spatial area of coverage for forest‐dwelling birds of ~0.3–1.1 km2. Our results suggest that to optimally configure an automated radio‐telemetry array at the regional scale, investigators should carefully consider detection range and its underlying covariates, including species type, the habitat matrix, and the orientation of antennas relative to preferred habitat.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Hydroelectric dam operations that lead to fluctuations in the water levels of reservoirs can influence the amount of riparian habitat available for migrating songbirds and may impact the use and quality of remaining habitat. Our objective was to determine if use of riparian habitats and mass gain by five warbler species at the Columbia River‐Revelstoke Migration Monitoring Station in British Columbia, Canada, were influenced by water levels in the surrounding Arrow Lakes Reservoir. We analyzed fall migration data collected from 1998 to 2006. Capture rates of American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla), Common Yellowthroats (Geothlypis trichas), Orange‐crowned Warblers (Vermivora celata), Wilson's Warblers (Wilsonia pusilla), and Yellow Warblers (Dendroica petechia) varied between years and weeks of the migration period, but were not affected by annual or weekly variation in water levels. Annual variation in capture rates was driven by hatch‐year birds (>80% of individuals captured were juveniles) and could reflect conditions on the breeding grounds that influence productivity. We found that mass gain by the five species of warblers varied between 0.32% and 0.98% of lean body mass/hour. Mass gain did not vary between years or across weeks of the migration period and was not influenced by annual or weekly variation in reservoir water levels. Although the amount of available riparian habitat was reduced when reservoir water levels were high, we found no evidence that this loss of habitat influenced either the number of warblers or the mass gain of warblers using the riparian habitat that remained. Body mass at the time of first capture varied between years and across weeks for all five species. For American Redstarts and Orange‐crowned Warblers, body mass declined as average weekly water levels increased, a pattern that could arise if water levels influenced either their settlement decisions or length of stay.  相似文献

New World wood warblers (Parulidae) represent one of the most dramatic adaptive radiations in North America. However, the ecological bases for the morphological differences among these species remain poorly understood, especially considering how many foraging and habitat studies the family has inspired. We hypothesized the existence of relationships between parulid morphology and diet. We combined a principal component analysis (PCA) of 18 external morphological traits of 11 species of warblers with stomach-content data from coexisting species in one breeding community in Louisiana and three wintering communities in Jamaica. The primary morphological differences, corresponding with the first three PCA axes, were body size, morphological adaptations for aerial foraging versus gleaning, and arboreal versus ground-foraging adaptations. Our analysis revealed little morphological overlap among the 11 species. Differences in diet among the warblers showed a significant relationship to the first two PCA axes of morphological traits. For five coexisting, foliage-gleaning species wintering in Jamaican wet limestone forest, larger warblers ate larger beetles and Orthopterans but not larger ants. In analyses including all four communities, species of warblers with aerial foraging morphologies consumed a greater proportion of winged insects than other warbler species. These findings document prey selection relevant to multiple subtle morphological differences among coexisting species. Overall, our results indicate that food and foraging have likely played an integral role in the morphological diversification and coexistence of species in the family Parulidae.  相似文献

Investigators studying the stopover ecology of migrating birds typically use the capture–recapture method to examine important parameters such as fuel deposition rates (FDR) and stopover duration. However, such studies can be constrained by the number of recaptures. An alternative method is to calculate a regression of mass over time of day, but this method may not be reliable because patterns of mass change of individual birds through the day may not reflect that of the whole population. Given the potential constraints of these methods, using them in combination with other methods, such as behavioral observations of foraging birds, may improve our understanding of the patterns of fuelling in birds at stopover sites. We observed the foraging behavior of three songbird species, including Western Bonelli's (Phylloscopus bonelli), Subalpine (Sylvia cantillans), and Willow (Phylloscopus trochilus) warblers, from 15 March to 30 April 2011 at a small oasis at the northern border of the Sahara desert in southeast Morocco. Given the location of our study site at the northern edge of the Sahara desert, birds migrating north likely needed to replenish their energy reserves at this stage of their journey. We assessed foraging effort by determining the rate (number per unit time) at which birds pecked at substrates or made aerial forays after flying insects. Peck rates were higher for Western Bonelli's Warblers than for Subalpine and Willow warblers, suggesting either species‐specific adaptations to feeding in arid environments or differences in the motivation to feed. In addition, Western Bonelli's Warblers had FDRs that were negative or close to zero and, therefore, were apparently unable to refuel successfully (i.e., increase their fuel stores) despite greater effort, possibly indicating less efficiency in obtaining food (i.e., more unsuccessful pecks). The lower peck rates of Subalpine and Willow warblers suggest either that they were less efficient at finding prey or were simply foraging at lower rates. For all three species, peck rates were lower at higher wind speeds, suggesting that wind may alter prey availability and detectability, especially of flying insects. Interactions among species‐specific migration strategies, environmental conditions, and habitat quality ultimately define the success of migration. Our results suggest that using observational data in combination with capture data may improve our understanding of these interactions at migration stopover sites.  相似文献

Detailed information about space use during the breeding season is limited for most Nearctic‐Neotropical migratory species of songbirds because of their small size and often cryptic behaviors. We monitored male Cerulean Warblers (Setophaga cerulea), a species of conservation concern, using radio‐telemetry during the 2006–2008 breeding seasons in northern Alabama to better understand their space use and habitat selection. We estimated diurnal home range and core areas using information theoretic criteria, located nocturnal roost sites, and related day and evening locations to surrounding landscape habitat, including features representative of canopy disturbances. Mean home range size was 6.7 ha (= 10), and home ranges included an average of at least 2 core areas encompassing 0.7 ha. We located 53 nocturnal roost sites that were an average 159.0 m from the center of the nearest core area. More than one‐third (36.6%) of roost sites were located outside the diurnal home ranges of male Cerulean Warblers; only 13.6% were located in core areas. Males in our study moved much farther than reported in previous studies, with some singing in areas > 300 m from previously used song perches, a behavior suggesting pursuit of extra‐pair copulations. Cerulean Warblers in our study preferentially selected a heavily forested landscape composed of mesic, floodplain bottomlands with little man‐made disturbance. Within their home ranges, diurnal locations of males in core areas were located significantly closer to a creek than locations outside of core areas. Our results suggest that male Cerulean Warblers require much larger areas than previously reported and underscore the importance of a predominately forested landscape in their habitat selection process. Although edge habitats appeared to influence space use by male Cerulean Warblers in our study, the extent to which this is an essential requirement is unclear. Our results and those of previous studies suggest that specific habitat requirements of this species can vary at the local scale throughout its breeding range.  相似文献

Shaded coffee agroecosystems traditionally have few pest problems potentially due to higher abundance and diversity of predators of herbivores. However, with coffee intensification (e.g., shade tree removal or pruning), some pest problems increase. For example, coffee leaf miner outbreaks have been linked to more intensive management and increased use of agrochemicals. Parasitic wasps control the coffee leaf miner, but few studies have examined the role of predators, such as ants, that are abundant and diverse in coffee plantations. Here, we examine linkages between arboreal ant communities and coffee leaf miner incidence in a coffee plantation in Mexico. We examined relationships between incidence and severity of leaf miner attack and: (1) variation in canopy cover, tree density, tree diversity, and relative abundance of Inga spp. shade trees; (2) presence of Azteca instabilis, an arboreal canopy dominant ant; and (3) the number of arboreal twig‐nesting ant species and nests in coffee plants. Differences in vegetation characteristics in study plots did not correlate with leaf miner damage perhaps because environmental factors act on pest populations at a larger spatial scale. Further, presence of A. instabilis did not influence presence or severity of leaf miner damage. The proportion of leaves with leaf miner damage was significantly lower where abundance of twig‐nesting ants was higher but not where twig‐nesting ant richness was higher. These results indicate that abundance of twig‐nesting ants in shaded coffee plantations may contribute to maintenance of low leaf miner populations and that ants provide important ecosystem services in coffee agroecosystems.  相似文献

Summary We studied experimentally interspecific competition among foliage-gleaning passerine birds by manipulating the density of resident tits. In 1988 tit density was experimentally increased on three small islands in a central Finnish lake, and decreased on three other islands by tit removal. In order to avoid the effects of between-island differences in habitat quality, the role of the islands was reversed when the experiment was repeated in the following year. Censuses and observations on foraging and feeding behaviour were conducted to assess the numerical and behavioural responses of migrant conguilders (mainly chaffinches and willow warblers) with respect to the manipulated abundance of the tits. We also measured whether variation in food consumption of tits affected the frequency with which the migrants found food by calculating average intervals between successful prey captures, time lags to prey-capture and giving-up times. Our results indicate that interspecific competition is of minor importance in structuring breeding bird assemblages and species feeding ecologies on the study islands. No consistent difference in foraging or feeding niches of chaffinches and willow warblers was found between low and high tit density conditions. Niche overlap analysis showed no avoidance by chaffinches and willow warblers of the microhabitats which tits used. Tit abundance had no significant effect on feeding success or behaviour. Experimentally increased abundance of resident birds was associated with increased abundance of breeding migrants, however. This pattern was found not only in the foliage gleaning guild but also with all passerine birds, indicating that food was not an important contributor to this pattern. We elaborate a hypothesis suggesting heterospecific attraction in northern breeding bird assemblages. Habitat generalist migrants may use the presence of residents as an indicator of safe and/or productive breeding sites in northern unpredictable circumstances.  相似文献

Insectivorous birds may adjust their foraging strategies to exploit changes in resource distributions. Arthropod prey strongly influence habitat‐specific persistence of long‐distance migrant passerines in their wintering areas, and arthropods are strongly affected by rainfall. However, the effect of drought on the dynamics of avian foraging ecology as resources shift is not well understood. We captured female American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) and studied their foraging behavior in high‐quality (evergreen black mangrove) and low‐quality (deciduous scrub) habitat in Jamaica during the winter of 1995–1996. As is typical in southwestern Jamaica, conditions became drier as spring approached and many trees in scrub lost most of their leaves; mangrove trees maintained most of their leaf cover. Birds in scrub lost more mass than those in mangrove, and scrub birds shifted to using more aerial (and fewer near‐perch) maneuvers. In scrub, but not in mangrove, the proportion of wing‐powered movements and aerial foraging maneuvers was positively correlated with mass corrected by body size. In both habitats, attack rate was negatively correlated with body condition. Therefore, redstarts in scrub that maintained body condition were likely better able to use energetically expensive aerial maneuvers and wing‐powered search movements to exploit large, calorie‐rich flying arthropods. As the scrub dried over the course of the winter, the shift in foraging tactic may have allowed some birds to forage more efficiently (i.e., lower attack rate), likely facilitating maintenance of good body condition.  相似文献

Aspects of searching behaviour among free-living South American flycatchers (Aves: Tyrannidae) are compared quantitatively. Flycatchers forage with stationary searching periods, followed either by an attempted prey capture (sally) or a ‘give-up’ flight to a new perch. Search times are proportional to body size within each of three categories of foraging behaviour: aerial hawking, sally-gleaning, and perch-gleaning. Over the family as a whole, search times are directly proportional to the size of the visual field scanned during the search. Intraspecific variations in search times are caused by local variations in prey density or visual complexity of the habitat. Between foraging modes, differences in searching and movement patterns are related to prey dispersion characteristics. Aerial hawkers regularly return to favoured perches, but foliage gleaners, which reduce the resources surrounding a perch by sallying only once, rarely return to a perch. In contrast to aerial hawkers, foliage gleaners appear to follow an organized scanning procedure on each perch, by searching nearby surfaces before they examine more distant prey substrates. Throughout the family, the median flight distance after a perch is abandoned is approximately twice the median search radius. Comparisons of search time distributions preceding sallies with those preceding give-up flights suggest that there is no single, optimal give-up time in a given habitat. Foliage-gleaning species appear to assess the amount of search time each perch warrants, presumably based on the degree of complexity of the search area. They either sally at prey before that time, or give-up when the allotted time has elapsed.  相似文献

1 In Mesoamerica, shade trees are often included within coffee (Coffea arabica) agroforestry systems. Shade trees potentially protect the main crop by increasing vegetational diversity and reducing insect herbivory through one or more mechanisms. 2 The effect of on‐farm vegetational diversity on harvesting of coffee leaves by the leaf‐cutting ant, Atta cephalotes L., was examined on 15 coffee farms varying in vegetational diversity near Turrialba, Costa Rica. The farms ranged from coffee monocultures to complex‐shade coffee systems with three or more tree species present. The vegetational diversity of each farm was quantified using a leaf area index. 3 The species composition and biomass of the plant material being carried into colonies by ants was collected, identified to species, and its biomass was quantified four times during one year for at least two colonies in each of the 15 farms. 4 The proportion of plant biomass that was coffee being retrieved by A. cephalotes differed significantly among farm management types, and was highest (40%) in monocultures and lowest (< 1%) in farms with complex shade. Coffee was always harvested in a lower proportion than predicted based upon its relative abundance on the farms. 5 In dual‐choice bioassays with laboratory colonies, A. cephalotes significantly preferred the leaves of the predominant shade tree species on the farms, poró (Erythrina poeppigiana) over coffee. 6 The results indicate risk of injury by A. cephalotes can be reduced in vegetationally diverse coffee agroecosystems due at least in part to a foraging preference by the ants for plants other than coffee.  相似文献

2006年3-4月,采用无距离估计样线法对云南哀牢山徐家坝中山湿性常绿阔叶林中的鸟类群落做了直接观察,观察到鸟类取食行为14 345次只.运片j聚类分析,依据鸟类的栖息取食行为格局将62种鸟划分为11个取食集团:(G1)地面拾取集团、(G2)地面扒取集团、(G3)树冠层飞取/拾取集团、(G4)树冠层飞取集团、(G5)树干层探取集团、(G6)灌层竹秆探取集团、(G7)树干粗枝搜寻集团、(G8)树冠层粗枝搜寻集团、(G9)树冠层拾取集团、(G10)灌丛下层叶层/树干/地面拾取集团、(G11)灌层拾取集团.结果表明,由于各个集团在栖息基层、取食基层及取食方式上的分离,使各集团分割了该地区的取食空间和食物资源;而集团内部的各个种间主要通过对取食高度的划分,使得集团内部的取食空『白j和食物资源得到了更深层次的利用,使种间竞争减至最小.其结果还表明,鸟类取食集团的数量和结构因不同的植被类型而异,顶级群落中包含的鸟类种类更多,各个种间的生态位分化也更为细致.  相似文献

Topographic diversity is an important component of environmental heterogeneity. Topographic diversity within the Upper Mississippi River floodplain has been degraded because of modifications for navigation improvement. Efforts aimed at restoring topographic diversity in the Upper Mississippi River floodplain have been extensive but have not focused on reversing the effects of forest loss and degradation. We investigated habitat features associated with Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea) locations both within and outside of river floodplains and hypothesized this species would select topographically diverse habitats. Both topographic diversity and the distance to the upland forest/floodplain forest interface were useful predictors of Cerulean Warbler presence. We conclude that incorporation of topographic diversity into floodplain forest restoration planning would likely benefit Cerulean Warblers and the other species with similar habitat requirements. Incorporating topographic diversity into floodplain forest conservation planning will be challenging on major rivers that serve multiple purposes.  相似文献
