Abstract. Light transmission through several sands, soils and size classes of glass beads was investigated. The glass beads served as a highly reflective model system for the sands. Light penetration was significantly better through sands than through either sandy or silty loams. For sandy soils, there was a shift in the spectrum leading to a change in the red-to-far-red photon ratio with increase in depth: this ratio dropped by more than 30% in the first few millimetres, and in some cases increased again with further increases in depth. The depths at which these changes occurred in the soil profile were specific for a given soil type. Similar spectral changes were obtained when sample depth for a sandy soil was held constant, and particle (ped) size of that soil was decreased. No such changes, either with sample depth or ped size, were observed with loams. Per cent transmittance in the blue (442 nm) was more than three orders of magnitude lower than in the red (632.8 nm) for sandy soils. When dry sandy soils were water-saturated, their transmittance increased by up to three orders of magnitude, and the red far-red ratios in the transmitted light increased in all cases. By contrast, water-saturated loams were essentially opaque. The possible significance of these spectral properties of soils in seed germination and seedling photomorphogenesis is discussed.  相似文献

Summary A study of the effects of malathion and parathion applied at 10 and 50 g/g of soil on transformations of urea and (NH4)2SO4–N in a sandy loam showed that the insecticides retarded urea hydrolysis as well as nitrification of urea and (NH4)2SO4–N. At 50 parts/106 rate of the insecticides, inhibition of urea hydrolysis ranged from 44 to 61% after 0.5 week and from 7 to 21% after 3 weeks of application. The insecticides inhibited the conversion of NH4 + to NO2 without appreciably affecting the subsequent oxidation of NO2 to NO3 –N. This resulted in accumulation of higher amounts of NH4 +–N in soil samples treated with ammonium sulfate or urea N.The results suggest that transformations of urea and NH4 + fertilizers in soils may be influenced by the amount of organophosphorus insecticide present and this may affect plant nutrition and fertilizer use.  相似文献

Summary Root hair production by young plants of lucerne, maize and perennial ryegrass grown in a sandy loam was assessed by examining roots growing at a soil-glass interface. Results are given for the percentage frequency distribution of root hair lengths and the numbers of root hairs produced per mm root. The mean lengths of root hairs observed on lucerne, maize and perennial ryegrass roots were 0.35, 0.90 and 1.12 mm respectively. Lucerne produced an average of 105 root hairs per mm of root, whereas maize produced 161 and perennial ryegrass produced 88. The total length of root hairs per mm length of root was estimated to be 37, 146 and 99 mm for lucerne, maize and perennial ryegrass resp. Letcombe Laboratory  相似文献

Natural attenuation processes affecting 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) were determined within loams for two study areas at the former Explosives Factory Maribyrnong, Australia. TNT fate and transport was investigated through spectrophotometric/High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analyses of soil and groundwater, adsorption and microcosm testwork. A five tonne crystalline TNT source zone delineated within near surface soils at the base of a TNT process waste lagoon was found to be supplying aqueous TNT loading (7 ppm) to subsurface soils and groundwater. The resultant plume was localized within the loam aquitard due to a combination of natural attenuation processes and hydrogeological constraints, including low hydraulic conductivity and upward hydraulic gradients. Freundlich described sorptive partitioning was the main TNT sink (KF = 29 mL/g), while transformation rates were moderate (1.01 × 10-4 h-1) under the aerobic conditions. Increasing 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene predominance over 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene was discovered with depth (in situ) and time (microcosms). Simplified dissolution rate calculations indicate that without mitigation of the TNT source, contaminant persistence within the vadose zone may approach 2000 years, while ATRANS20 simulations demonstrate that the TNT plume propagates very slowly along the flow path within the aquitard.  相似文献

Root penetration resistance and elongation of maize seedling roots were measured directly in undisturbed cores of two sandy loam soils. Root elongation rate was negatively correlated with root penetration resistance, and was reduced to about 50 to 60% of that of unimpeded controls by a resistance of between 0.26 and 0.47 MPa. Resistance to a 30° semiangle, 1 mm diameter penetrometer was between about 4.5 and 7.5 times greater than the measured root penetration resistance. However, resistance to a 5° semiangle, 1 mm diameter probe was approximately the same as the resistnace to root penetration after subtracting the frictional component of resistance. The diameter of roots grown in the undisturbed cores was greater than that of roots grown in loose soil, probably as a direct result of the larger mechanical impedance in the cores.  相似文献

Summary In a microplot experiment conducted during the winter seasons of 1979–80 and 1980–81 on a sandy loam soil in the semi-desert tract, the accumulation of salts was found to be highest in March after harvest of the barley crop grown with saline water of EC values ranging from 2.2 to 24 mmhos/cm. The average EC of saturation extract of the surface soil layer (0–15 cm) was 0.79 times that of the applied irrigation water at the time of crop harvest, however, accumulated salts of the winter season were leached by the following monsoon rains. The average SAR of saturation extract of soil was 1.5 times that of the irrigation water in March but quite low in November. Highly significant correlations, (+0.90 to 0.99) at the post irrigated period between ECse of soils and EC of waters and SARse of soils and SAR of waters have been observed. Barley could be grown economically with irrigation water upto EC 16 mmhos/cm; however an average reduction in grain yield or not more than 43.5% compared to the yield under irrigation with tube well water of EC 2.2 mmhos/cm, was obtained. The starch, N and P contents decreased and that of K and Na increased in the grain with the use of saline waters. The performance of DL-85 variety was best and its K/Na ratio was also higher than that of other tested varieties.  相似文献

A study of nematodes associated with the large larch bark beetle Ips cembrae (Heer 1836) was carried out at three locations in the Czech Republic. The proportion of beetles infested by endoparasitic nematodes (representatives of genera Contortylenchus, Parasitylenchus, Cryptaphelenchus and Parasitorhabditis) ranged from 29.9 to 50.9%. Significant differences were determined in nematode infestation levels among locations, generations and sampling methods. No differences were found in infestation rates between males and females. The percentage of bark beetles with phoretic nematodes ranged from 18 to 42.9%. Phoretic nematodes directly found under elytra, on wings and between body segments of the bark beetles belong to the genus Micoletzkya. However, adults and juveniles of other two phoretic species Laimaphelenchus penardi and Bursaphelenchus sp. were found in the gallery frass of I. cembrae. Infestation by phoretic nematodes positively correlated with the presence of mites under elytra.  相似文献

Dynein heavy chains are motor proteins that comprise a large gene family found across eukaryotes. We have investigated this gene family in four ciliate species: Ichthyophthirius, Oxytricha, Paramecium, and Tetrahymena. Ciliates appear to encode more dynein heavy chain genes than most eukaryotes. Phylogenetic comparisons demonstrated that the last common ancestor of the ciliates that were examined expressed at least 14 types of dynein heavy chains with most of the expansion coming from the single‐headed inner arm dyneins. Each of the dyneins most likely performed different functions within the cell.  相似文献

Habenaria radiata (Orchidaceae) has two whorls of perianth, comprising three greenish sepals, two white petals and one lip (labellum). By contrast, the pseudopeloric (with a decreased degree of zygomorphy) mutant cultivar of H. radiata , ‘Hishou’, has changes in the identities of the dorsal sepal to a petaloid organ and the two ventral sepals to lip‐like organs. Here, we isolated four DEFICIENS like and two AGL 6 ‐like genes from H. radiata , and characterized their expression. Most of these genes revealed similar expression patterns in the wild type and in the ‘Hishou’ cultivar, except Hr DEF ‐C3. The Hr DEF ‐C3 gene was expressed in petals and lip in the wild type but was ectopically expressed in sepal, petals, lip, leaf, root and bulb in ‘Hishou’. Sequence analysis of the Hr DEF ‐C3 loci revealed that the ‘Hishou’ genome harbored two types of Hr DEF ‐C3 genes: one identical to wild‐type Hr DEF ‐C3 and the other carrying a retrotransposon insertion in its promoter. Genetic linkage analysis of the progeny derived from an intraspecific cross between ‘Hishou’ and the wild type demonstrated that the mutant pseudopeloric trait was dominantly inherited and was linked to the Hr DEF ‐C3 gene carrying the retrotransposon. These results indicate that the pseudopeloric phenotype is caused by retrotransposon insertion in the Hr DEF ‐C3 promoter, resulting in the ectopic expression of Hr DEF ‐C3 . As the expression of Hr AGL 6‐C2 was limited to lateral sepals and lip, the overlapping expression of Hr DEF ‐C3 and Hr AGL 6‐C2 is likely to be responsible for the sepal to lip‐like identity in the lateral sepals of the ‘Hishou’ cultivar.  相似文献

Although two plastid regions have been adopted as the standard markers for plant DNA barcoding, their limited resolution has provoked the consideration of other gene regions, especially in taxonomically diverse genera. The genus Gossypium (cotton) includes eight diploid genome groups (A–G, and K) and five allotetraploid species which are difficult to discriminate morphologically. In this study, we tested the effectiveness of three widely used markers (matK, rbcL, and ITS2) in the discrimination of 20 diploid and five tetraploid species of cotton. Sequences were analysed locus‐wise and in combinations to determine the most effective strategy for species identification. Sequence recovery was high, ranging from 92% to 100% with mean pairwise interspecific distance highest for ITS2 (3.68%) and lowest for rbcL (0.43%). At a 0.5% threshold, the combination of matK+ITS2 produced the greatest number of species clusters. Based on ‘best match’ analysis, the combination of matK+ITS2 was best, while based on ‘all species barcodes’ analysis, ITS2 gave the highest percentage of correct species identifications (98.93%). The combination of sequences for all three markers produced the best resolved tree. The disparity index test based on matK+rbcL+ITS2 was significant (< 0.05) for a higher number of species pairs than the individual gene sequences. Although all three barcodes separated the species with respect to their genome type, no single combination of barcodes could differentiate all the Gossypium species, and tetraploid species were particularly difficult.  相似文献

Population viability analysis (PVA) has been applied to the management of many threatened populations. The objective of this study was, therefore, to estimate the PVA of Walia ibex at the Simen Mountains National Park, in the north‐central highlands of Ethiopia, with respect to population growth parameters, the probability of the population reaching a lower extinction threshold and the mean time to extinction. Direct census of the population was carried out in 2009. Secondary census data were also collected from park authorities and the literature reviews. The result revealed that the estimates of the infinitesimal mean, μ (0.04117) was greater than the infinitesimal variance, σ2 (0.0219). The probability that the population reaches the extinction threshold was very low (0.15%). The mean time required for the counts to decline from the existing population size to one individual animal was 160 years. But threatened species are adversely affected by changes in landscape. These changes can be brought by short‐ and long‐term human and climate change impacts, respectively. Therefore, with the absence of environmental and demographic stochasticity and, with the application of appropriate reproductions and habitat management, the population of Walia ibex will be viable and reaches its mean time of extinctions after 160 years.  相似文献

Although famous for photic courtship displays, fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) are also notable for emitting strong odors when molested. The identity of volatile emissions and their possible role, along with photic signals, as aposematic warnings of unpalatability have been little explored, especially in tropical species. Pursuant to the observation that the widespread Neotropical fireflies, Photuris trivittata and Bicellonycha amoena, emit pungent odors, glows, and flashes when handled, we investigated their cuticular and headspace chemistry. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analyses revealed that both fireflies have species‐specific cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. Photuris trivittata headspace was dominated by 2‐methoxy‐3‐(1‐methylpropyl) pyrazine (hereafter, pyrazine), on the order of 1.59 ng/individual and a suite of sesquiterpenes, while B. amoena emitted 3‐methoxy‐2‐butenoic acid methyl ester and a few ketones. This is the first report of such compounds in fireflies. We investigated the role of pyrazine in P. trivittata's interactions with potential predators: sympatric ants, toads, and bats. Solvent‐washed P. trivittata painted with pyrazine incurred lower ant predation than did their solvent‐washed counterparts. Pyrazine significantly repelled ants at baits in concentrations as low as 9.8 × 10?4 ng/μl. The toad, Rhinella marina, readily accepted intact fireflies, pyrazine‐coated and uncoated mealworms. Both Myotis nigricans and Molossus molossus bats rejected fireflies, but accepted both pyrazine‐coated and uncoated mealworms. While pyrazine repels ants, its role as an aposematic signal warning other potential predators of firefly distastefulness requires further investigation. Our results underscore the idea that multiple enemies exert conflicting selection on firefly defenses.  相似文献

长期施肥对砂壤质石灰性潮土土壤酸碱缓冲体系的影响   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
通过长期施肥定位试验,分析了石灰性潮土连续30年施肥处理下土壤pH、碳酸钙和活性碳酸钙含量以及土壤酸碱缓冲容量的变化.结果表明:连续30年施肥处理导致石灰性潮土0 ~20 cm耕层土壤酸化加速,各施肥处理的耕层土壤pH降低0.41 ~0.70;各施肥处理的耕层土壤酸碱缓冲容量为15.82 ~ 21.96 cmol·kg-1,单施氮肥明显降低了土壤酸碱缓冲容量,而增施有机肥可显著提高土壤酸碱缓冲容量.土壤酸碱缓冲容量与土壤碳酸钙和活性碳酸钙含量呈显著正相关,与土壤有机质含量和阳离子交换量的相关性不显著,长期不同施肥处理下石灰性潮土仍处于碳酸钙初级缓冲体系,盐基离子和有机质对土壤酸碱缓冲体系的影响较小.0 ~40 cm土层的土壤碳酸钙和活性碳酸钙含量均高于40 ~ 80 cm土层.与土壤碳酸钙相比,土壤活性碳酸钙更能敏感反映土壤基本理化性状的变化,碳酸钙缓冲体系还可以进一步细分为土壤活性碳酸钙缓冲体系.  相似文献

Although Balamuthia mandrillaris was identified more than two decades ago as an agent of fatal granulomatous encephalitis in humans and other animals, little is known about its ecological niche, biological behavior in the environment, food preferences and predators, if any. When infecting humans or other animals, Balamuthia feeds on tissues; and in vitro culture, it feeds on mammalian cells (monkey kidney cells, human lung fibroblasts, and human microvascular endothelial cells). According to recent reports, it is believed that Balamuthia feeds on small amebae, for example, Acanthamoeba that are present in its ecological niche. To test this hypothesis, we associated Balamuthia on a one‐on‐one basis with selected protozoa and algae. We videotaped the behavior of Balamuthia in the presence of a potential prey, its ability to hunt and attack its food, and the time required to eat and cause damage to the target cell by direct contact. We found that B. mandrillaris ingested trophozoites of Naegleria fowleri, Naegleria gruberi, Acanthamoeba spp., Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes, Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites, and Giardia. However, it did not feed on Acanthamoeba cysts or algae. Balamuthia caused cytolysis of T. cruzi epimastigotes and T. gondii tachyzoites by direct contact. Balamuthia trophozoites and cysts were, however, eaten by Paramecium sp.  相似文献

The discovery of biomarkers able to predict biological age of individuals is a crucial goal in aging research. Recently, researchers' attention has turn toward epigenetic markers of aging. Using the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip on whole blood DNA from a small cohort of 64 subjects of different ages, we identified 3 regions, the CpG islands of ELOVL2, FHL2, and PENK genes, whose methylation level strongly correlates with age. These results were confirmed by the Sequenom's EpiTYPER assay on a larger cohort of 501 subjects from 9 to 99 years, including 7 cord blood samples. Among the 3 genes, ELOVL2 shows a progressive increase in methylation that begins since the very first stage of life (Spearman's correlation coefficient = 0.92) and appears to be a very promising biomarker of aging.  相似文献

Biological invasions are regarded as threats to global biodiversity. Among invasive aliens, a number of plant species belonging to the genera Myriophyllum, Ludwigia and Cabomba, and to the Hydrocharitaceae family pose a particular ecological threat to water bodies. Therefore, one would try to prevent them from entering a country. However, many related species are commercially traded, and distinguishing invasive from non‐invasive species based on morphology alone is often difficult for plants in a vegetative stage. In this regard, DNA barcoding could become a good alternative. In this study, 242 samples belonging to 26 species from 10 genera of aquatic plants were assessed using the chloroplast loci trnHpsbA, matK and rbcL. Despite testing a large number of primer sets and several PCR protocols, the matK locus could not be amplified or sequenced reliably and therefore was left out of the analysis. Using the other two loci, eight invasive species could be distinguished from their respective related species, a ninth one failed to produce sequences of sufficient quality. Based on the criteria of universal application, high sequence divergence and level of species discrimination, the trnH‐psbA noncoding spacer was the best performing barcode in the aquatic plant species studied. Thus, DNA barcoding may be helpful with enforcing a ban on trade of such invasive species, such as is already in place in the Netherlands. This will become even more so once DNA barcoding would be turned into machinery routinely operable by a nonspecialist in botany and molecular genetics.  相似文献

Molecular phylogenetic analyses conducted over the past 15 yr have consistently had difficulties resolving relationships among the cetacean species in the subfamily Delphininae. In addition, paraphyly of the genera Tursiops and Stenella in these molecular phylogenies has been a recurrent problem since the first appearance of such a phylogeny in 1999, suggesting that these genera do not accurately reflect the evolutionary relationships of the species they contain. Morphological analyses have not resolved the issues. The genera in Delphininae originated in the 19th Century on questionable morphological grounds. The species were nearly all originally described in the genus Delphinus of Linnaeus. Recent molecular phylogenies based on various mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers have suggested a wide range of possible relationships among these taxa, and several authors have suggested synonymizing all the taxa (Lagenodelphis, Stenella, Sousa, and Tursiops) under Delphinus. Until molecular and/or morphological analyses adequately sort out relationships in this very recently radiated group, one possible solution indeed would be to merge all the delphinine genera with Delphinus. Implications of such a move and alternatives are discussed.

As a result, this Norris Award paper has undergone peer‐review and has taken longer than usual for a Norris Award paper to appear in the journal following its presentation at the biennial conference. It also has co‐authors, with varying opinions on the issues discussed in the essay, to cover appropriately and more thoroughly those components of the paper that required additional expertise. I believe this approach has produced an excellent, thought‐provoking essay and is an approach that should be available to future Norris Award winners if they so choose to take it. Since this essay is meant to elicit dialogue, comments are welcome and will be considered for publication in Letters to the Editor.
