This work describes the long-term acclimation of the halotolerant microalga Dunaliella viridis to different photon irradiance, ranging from darkness to 1500 μmol m−2 s−1. In order to assess the effects of long-term photoinhibition, changes in oxygen production rate, pigment composition, xanthophyll cycle and in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence using the saturating pulse method were measured. Growth rate was maximal at intermediate irradiance (250 and 700 μmol m−2 s−1). The increase in growth irradiance from 700 to 1500 μmol m−2 s−1 did not lead to further significant changes in pigment composition or EPS, indicating saturation in the pigment response to high light. Changes in Photosystem II optimum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) evidenced photoinhibition at 700 and especially at 1500 μmol m−2 s−1. The relation between photosynthetic electron flow rate and photosyntetic O2 evolution was linear for cultures in darkness shifting to curvilinear as growth irradiance increased, suggesting the interference of the energy dissipation processes in oxygen evolution. Carbon assimilation efficiencies were studied in relation to changes in growth rate, internal carbon and nitrogen composition, and organic carbon released to the external medium. All illuminated cultures showed a high capability to maintain a C:N ratio between 6 and 7. The percentage of organic carbon released to the external medium increased to its maximum under high irradiance (1500 μmol m−2 s−1). These results suggest that the release of organic carbon could act as a secondary dissipation process when the xanthophyll cycle is saturated. The ability of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Akcent) to adjust the composition and function of the photosynthetic apparatus to growth irradiances of 25–1200 μmol m−2 s−1 was studied by gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements and high-performance liquid chromatography. The increased growth irradiance stimulated light- and CO2-saturated rates of CO2 assimilation expressed on a leaf area basis up to 730 μmol m−2 s−1 (HL730), whereas at an irradiance of 1200 μmol m−2 s−1 (EHL1200) both rates decreased significantly. Further, the acclimation to EHL1200 was associated with an extremely high chlorophyll a/b ratio (3.97), a more than doubled xanthophyll cycle pool (VAZ) and a six-fold higher de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle pigments as compared to barley grown under 25 μmol m−2 s−1 (LL25). EHL1200 plants also exhibited a long-term inhibition of Photosystem II (PS II) photochemical efficiency (F v/F m). Photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll a/b and VAZ revealed a linear trend of dependence on PS II excitation pressure in a certain range of growth irradiances (100–730 μmol m−2 s−1). The deviation from linearity of these relationships for EHL1200 barley is discussed. In addition, the role of increased VAZ and/or accumulation of zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin in acclimation of barley to high irradiance is studied with respect to regulation of non-radiative dissipation and/or photochemical efficiency within PS II. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate acclimation of micropropagated plants of Rhododendron ponticum subsp. baeticum to different irradiances and recovery after exposure to high irradiance. Plants grown under high (HL) or intermediate (IL) irradiances displayed higher values of maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) and light saturation coefficient (Ek) than plants grown under low irradiance (LL). The capacity of tolerance to photoinhibition (as assessed by the response of photochemical quenching, qp) varied as follows: HL > IL > LL. Thermal energy dissipation (qN) was also affected by growth irradiance, with higher saturating values being observed in HL plants. Light-response curves suggested a gradual replacement of qp by qN with increasing irradiance. Following exposure to irradiance higher than 1500 μmol m−2 s−1, a prolonged reduction of the maximal photochemical efficiency of PS 2 (Fv/Fm) was observed in LL plants, indicating the occurrence of chronic photoinhibition. In contrary, the decrease in Fv/Fm was quickly reverted in HL plants, pointing to a reversible photoinhibition.  相似文献

The microalga Haematococcus pluvialis Flotow has been the subject of a number of studies concerned with maximizing astaxanthin production for use in animal feeds and for human consumption. Several of these studies have specifically attempted to ascertain the optimal temperature and irradiance combination for growth of H. pluvialis, but there has been a great deal of disagreement between laboratories. “Ideal” levels of temperature and irradiance have been reported to range from 14 to 28°C and 30 to 200 μmol photons m−2 s−1. The objective of the present study was to simultaneously explore temperature and irradiance effects for a single strain of H. pluvialis (UTEX 2505) across an experimental region that encompassed the reported “optimal” combinations of these factors for multiple strains. To this end, a two-dimensional experimental design based on response surface methodology (RSM) was created. Maximum growth rates for UTEX 2505 were achieved at 27°C and 260 μmol photons m−2 s−1, while maximum quantum yield for stable charge separation at PSII (Fv/Fm) was achieved at 27°C and 80 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Maximum pigment concentrations correlated closely with maximum Fv/Fm. Numeric optimization of growth rate and Fv/Fm produced an optimal combination of 27°C and 250 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Polynomial models of the various response surfaces were validated with multiple points and were found to be very useful for predicting several H. pluvialis UTEX 2505 responses across the entire two-dimensional experimental design space.  相似文献

Summary MicropropagatedRosa hybrida plantlets were simultaneously rooted and acclimatized under 100 and 200 μmol m−2 s−1 light for 2 wk. At the end of the first week of acclimatization, the plantlets were transferred onto a low water potential medium (from −0.06 MPa to −0.3 MPa). Dry weight was decreased by increased hight and low water potential. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis, expressed as a decrease in Fv/Fm ratio and ΦPSII and an increase in 1 −qp, occurred in plants grown under 200 μmol m−2 s−1. When high light (200 μmol m−2 s−1) and water stress were applied simultaneously, their effects on chlorophyll fluorescence parameters depended on stress duration; after 1 d of water stress, photoinhibition was more pronounced; after 7 d of stress, Fv/Fm ratio and ΦPSII were higher than after 1 d of stress; photoinhibition was reduced. This suggests that after a 1-d stress, the effect of water stress alone included a superimposed effect of photoinhibition to which the water-stressed plants were sensitized; after 7 d, plantlets had adapted to water stress. The photoprotective effects under high light might result in energy dissipative mechanisms linked to photochemical and nonphotochemical quenching other than CO2 fixation.  相似文献

Response to irradiance of leaf net photosynthetic rates (P N) of four carrot cultivars: Cascade, Caro Choice (CC), Oranza, and Red Core Chantenay (RCC) were examined in a controlled environment. Gas exchange measurements were conducted at photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) from 100 to 1 000 μmol m−2 s−1 at 20 °C and 350 μmol (CO2) mol−1(air). The values of P N were fitted to a rectangular hyperbolic nonlinear regression model. P N for all cultivars increased similarly with increasing PAR but Cascade and Oranza generally had higher P N than CC. None of the cultivars reached saturation at 1 000 μmol m−2 s−1. The predicted P N at saturation (P Nmax) for Cascade, CC, Oranza, and RCC were 19.78, 16.40, 19.79, and 18.11 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1, respectively. The compensation irradiance (I c) occurred at 54 μmol m−2 s−1 for Cascade, 36 μmol m−2 s−1 for CC, 45 μmol m−2 s−1 for Oranza, and 25 μmol m−2 s−1 for RCC. The quantum yield among the cultivars ranged between 0.057–0.033 mol(CO2) mol−1(PAR) and did not differ. Dark respiration varied from 2.66 μmol m−2 s−1 for Cascade to 0.85 μmol m−2 s−1 for RCC. As P N increased with PAR, intercellular CO2 decreased in a non-linear manner. Increasing PAR increased stomatal conductance and transpiration rate to a peak between 600 and 800 μmol m−2 s−1 followed by a steep decline resulting in sharp increases in water use efficiency. Photosynthetic parameters of phytoplankton and sea ice algae from landfast sea ice of the Chukchi Sea off Point Barrow, Alaska, were assessed in spring 2005 and winter through spring 2006 using Pulse Amplitude Modulated (PAM) fluorometry including estimates of maximum quantum efficiency (F v/F m), maximum relative electron transport rate (rETRmax), photosynthetic efficiency (α), and the photoadaptive index (E k). The use of centrifuged brine samples allowed to document vertical gradients in ice algal acclimation with 5 cm vertical resolution for the first time. Bottom ice algae (0–5 cm from ice–water interface) expressed low F v/F m (0.331–0.426) and low α (0.098–0.130 (μmol photons m−2s−1)−1) in December. F v/F m and α increased in March and May (0.468–0.588 and 0.141–0.438 (μmol photons m−2s−1)−1, respectively) indicating increased photosynthetic activity. In addition, increases in rETRmax (3.3–16.4 a.u.) and E k (20–88 μmol photons m−2 s−1) from December to May illustrates a higher potential for primary productivity as communities become better acclimated to under-ice light conditions. In conclusion, photosynthetic performance by ice algae (as assessed by PAM fluorometry) was tightly linked to sea ice salinity, temperature, and inorganic nutrient concentrations (mainly nitrogen).  相似文献

The response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Akcent) to various photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) and elevated [CO2] [700 μmol (CO2) mol−1; EC] was studied by gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and pigment analysis. In comparison with barley grown under ambient [CO2] [350 μmol (CO2) mol−1; AC] the EC acclimation resulted in a decrease in photosynthetic capacity, reduced stomatal conductance, and decreased total Chl content. The extent of acclimation depression of photosynthesis, the most pronounced for the plants grown at 730 μmol m−2 s−1 (PPFD730), may be related to the degree of sink-limitation. The increased non-radiative dissipation of absorbed photon energy for all EC plants corresponded to the higher de-epoxidation state of xanthophylls only for PPFD730 barley. Further, a pronounced decrease in photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency (given as FV/FM) for EC plants grown at 730 and 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 in comparison with AC barley was related to the reduced epoxidation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin back to violaxanthin in darkness. Thus the EC conditions sensitise the photosynthetic apparatus of high-irradiance acclimated barley plants (particularly PPFD730) to the photoinactivation of PS2. We assessed the effect of the exposure to full sunlight (5, 35, and 120 min, i.e. T5, T35, and T120) on fluorescence parameters of two young tropical trees, Swietenia macrophylla, a gap-demanding species, and Minquartia guianensis, a shade tolerant species. Fluorescence parameters (F0, Fm, Fv/Fm) were recorded before treatments and after the transition to low irradiance (LI). Recovery from photoinhibition (measured as Fv/Fm) was monitored for 24 h at LI. In Swietenia, an almost complete restoration of the Fv/Fm values occurred in T5 and T35 plants, when a rise in F0 was observed after the transition to LI. This was inferred as indicative of dynamic photoinhibition. T120 led to a decline in F0 in Minquartia, but not in Swietenia. The plants of both species were unable to recovery from photoinhibition after 24 h at LI, when F0 declined or remained unchanged. This was interpreted as indicative of chronic photoinhibition. Compared with Swietenia, Minquartia was more susceptible to photoinhibition, as indicated by lower Fv/Fm values.  相似文献

Rosa hybrida plantlets were rooted on solid sucrosed medium (MS) under an irradiance (PPFD) of 45 μmol m-2 s-1 or on liquid hydroponic solution (MH) at 100 μmol m-2 s-1. Then all plantlets were acclimated without sucrose under 100 μmol m-2 s-1 PPFD. After 7 d in rooting stage, the ratio of variable over maximal chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was significantly higher for plants grown in MH than in MS and hence the higher irradiance at this stage of growth had no photoinhibitory effect. The radiant energy was used by the photochemical process and also by photoprotective mechanisms of photosystem 2, expressed by increases in the rates of electron flux, net photosynthesis, and non-photochemical quenching. This effect on Fv/Fm was maintained during three weeks in acclimation phase. The resistance of plantlets increased as new leaves formed, and after six weeks in acclimation, there was no difference between the two conditions. The study under higher irradiance (100, 150, or 300 μmol m-2 s-1) indicated that photoinhibition might take place at 300 μmol m-2 s-1 whatever the growth conditions. To investigate damaging mechanisms of chilling and salt stress to peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) leaves, LuHua 14 was used in the present work upon exposure to chilling temperature (4°C) accompanied by high irradiance (1,200 μmol m−2 s−1) (CH), salt stress accompanied by high irradiance (1,200 μmol m−2 s−1) (SH), and high-irradiance stress (1,200 μmol m−2 s−1) at room temperature (25°C) (NH), respectively. Additionally, plants under low irradiance (100 μmol m−2 s−1) at room temperature (25°C) were used as control plants (CK). Relative to CK and NH treatments, both the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and the absorbance at 820 nm decreased greatly in peanut leaves under CH and SH stress, which indicated that severe photoinhibition occurred in peanut leaves under such conditions. Initial fluorescence (Fo), 1 − qP and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) in peanut leaves significantly increased under CH- and SH stress. Additionally, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the key enzymes of water-water cycle, decreased greatly, the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and membrane permeability increased. These results suggested that damages to peanut photosystems might be related to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by excess energy, and the water-water cycle could not dissipate energy efficiently under the stress of CH and SH, which caused the accumulation of ROS greatly. CH and SH had similar damaging effects on peanut photosystems, except that CH has more severe effects. All the results showed that CH- and SH stress has similar damaging site and mechanisms in peanut leaves.  相似文献

The anatomic and functional leaf characteristics related to photosynthetic performance of Castanea sativa growing in vitro and in nursery were compared. The irradiance saturated photosynthesis in in vitro grown plantlets was significantly lower compared to nursery plants (65 vs. 722 μmol m−2 s−1). The maximum photosynthetic rate (PNmax) was 4.0 and 10.0 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1 in in vitro microshoots and nursery plant leaves, respectively. Carboxylation efficiency (CE) and electron transport rate (ETR) were three-folds higher in nursery plants than in microshoots. The nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was saturated at 80 μmol m−2 s−1 in microshoots suggesting limited photoprotection by thermal dissipation. The microshoots had wide open, spherical stomata and higher stomatal density than nursery plants and they had almost no epicuticular wax. Consequently, the microshoots had high stomatal conductance and high transpiration rate. These anatomic and functional leaf characteristics are likely major causes of the low survival rates of plantlets after ex vitro transfer.  相似文献

Intact leaves of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C.F. Liang et A.R. Ferguson) from plants grown in a range of controlled temperatures from 15/10 to 30/25°C were exposed to a photon flux density (PFD) of 1500 μmol·m−2·s−1 at leaf temperatures between 10 and 25°C. Photoinhibition and recovery were followed at the same temperatures and at a PFD of 20 μmol·m−2·s−1, by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence at 77 K and 692 nm, by measuring the photon yield of photosynthetic O2 evolution and light-saturated net photosynthetic CO2 uptake. The growth of plants at low temperatures resulted in chronic photoinhibition as evident from reduced fluorescence and photon yields. However, low-temperature-grown plants apparently had a higher capacity to dissipate excess excitation energy than leaves from plants grown at high temperatures. Induced photoinhibition, from exposure to a PFD above that during growth, was less severe in low-temperature-grown plants, particularly at high exposure temperatures. Net changes in the instantaneous fluorescence,F 0, indicated that little or no photoinhibition occurred when low-temperature-grown plants were exposed to high-light at high temperatures. In contrast, high-temperature-grown plants were highly susceptible to photoinhibitory damage at all exposure temperatures. These data indicate acclimation in photosynthesis and changes in the capacity to dissipate excess excitation energy occurred in kiwifruit leaves with changes in growth temperature. Both processes contributed to changes in susceptibility to photoinhibition at the different growth temperatures. However, growth temperature also affected the capacity for recovery, with leaves from plants grown at low temperatures having moderate rates of recovery at low temperatures compared with leaves from plants grown at high temperatures which had negligible recovery. This also contributed to the reduced susceptibility to photoinhibition in low-temperature-grown plants. However, extreme photoinhibition resulted in severe reductions in the efficiency and capacity for photosynthesis.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to clarify effects of anthocyanins on photosynthesis and photoinhibition in green and red leaves of Oxalis triangularis. Gas analysis indicated that green plants had the highest apparent quantum yield for CO2 assimilation [0.051 vs. 0.031 μmol(CO2) μmol−1(photon)] and the highest maximum photosynthesis [10.07 vs. 7.24 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1], while fluorescence measurements indicated that red plants had the highest PSII quantum yield [0.200 vs. 0.143 μmol(e) μmol−1(photon)] and ETRmax [66.27 vs. 44.34 μmol(e) m−2 s−1]. Red plants had high contents of anthocyanins [20.11 mg g−1(DM)], while green plants had low and undetectable levels of anthocyanin. Red plants also had statistically significantly (0.05>p>0.01) lower contents of xanthophyll cycle components [0.63 vs. 0.76 mg g−1(DM)] and higher activities of the reactive oxygen scavenging enzyme ascorbate peroxidase [41.2 vs. 10.0 nkat g−1(DM)]. Anthocyanins act as a sunscreen, protecting the chloroplasts from high light intensities. This shading effect causes a lower photosynthetic CO2 assimilation in red plants compared to green plants, but a higher quantum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII). Anthocyanins contribute to photoprotection, compensating for lower xanthophyll content in red plants, and red plants are less photoinhibited than green plants, as illustrated by the Fv/Fm ratio.  相似文献

The responses to irradiance of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) electron transport were simultaneously studied by gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence measurement in two-year-old apple tree leaves (Malus pumila Mill. cv. Tengmu No.1/Malus hupehensis Rehd). Net photosynthetic rate (P N) was saturated at photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) 600-1 100 (mol m-2 s-1, while the PS2 non-cyclic electron transport (P-rate) showed a maximum at PPFD 800 mol m-2 s-1. With PPFD increasing, either leaf potential photosynthetic CO2 assimilation activity (Fd/Fs) and PS2 maximal photochemical activity (Fv/Fm) decreased or the ratio of the inactive PS2 reaction centres (RC) [(Fi – Fo)/(Fm – Fo)] and the slow relaxing non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (qs) increased from PPFD 1 200 mol m-2 s-1, but cyclic electron transport around photosystem 1 (RFp), irradiance induced PS2 RC closure [(Fs – Fo)/Fm – Fo)], and the fast and medium relaxing non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (qf and qm) increased remarkably from PPFD 900 (mol m-2 s-1. Hence leaf photosynthesis of young apple leaves saturated at PPFD 800 mol m-2 s-1 and photoinhibition occurred above PPFD 900 mol m-2 s-1. During the photoinhibition at different irradiances, young apple tree leaves could dissipate excess photons mainly by energy quenching and state transition mechanisms at PPFD 900-1 100 mol m-2 s-1, but photosynthetic apparatus damage was unavoidable from PPFD 1 200 mol m-2 s-1. We propose that Chl fluorescence parameter P-rate is superior to the gas exchange parameter P N and the Chl fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm as a definition of saturation irradiance and photoinhibition of plant leaves.  相似文献

The relation between oxygen evolution rate (OER) and quantum yield of photochemical reactions in photosystem 2 (ΦPS2) was examined in lichen symbiotic alga Trebouxia erici Ahmadjian (strain UTEX 911) exposed to different irradiances and osmotic stress (2 M sucrose for 60 h). Linear relationship was found between OER and ΦPS2 in control cell suspension within irradiance range of 0 – 500 μmol m−2 s−1. Under osmotic stress, OER and ΦPS2 were significantly reduced. Relation between OER and ΦPS2 was curvilinear due to strong osmotically-induced inhibition of OER at high irradiance. The highest used irradiance (500 μmol m−2 s−1) was photoinhibitory for osmotically-stressed T. erici because non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) increased substantially. Energy-dependent quenching represented major part of NPQ increase. Osmotic stress led also to the reduction of capacity of photochemical processes in PS 2 (FV/FM) and increase in F0/FM. These changes indicated negative effects of osmoticum on structure and function of photosynthetic apparatus.  相似文献

The activity of 3-deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate 7-phosphate (DAHP) synthase (DS-Mn, DS-Co), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), and chalcone synthase (CHS) was monitored at various light intensities (dark, 8.88 μmol m−2 s−1, 88.8 μmol m−2 s−1) using a strawberry cell suspension culture. DS-Mn, PAL, and CHS were found to increase significantly (p>0.05) under light intensitie of 88.8 μmol m−2 s−1 compared to those of 8.88 μmol m−2 s−1 and dark. The activity of DS-Mn, PAL, and CHS were maximum at 88.8 μmol m−2 s−1. Anthocyanin content reached a maximum after 48–60 h of culturing at 88.8 μmol m−2 s−1. DS-Co showed greater activity than DS-Mn during cell culturing, but showed no correlation with anthocyanin production and light intensity. The CHS gene expression was continuous at a light intensity of 88.8 μmol m−2 s−1. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

By simultaneously analyzing the chlorophyll a fluorescence transient and light absorbance at 820 nm as well as chlorophyll fluorescence quenching, we investigated the effects of different photon flux densities (0, 15, 200 μmol m−2 s−1) with or without 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU) on the repair process of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) leaves after treatment with low temperature (6°C) combined with moderate photon flux density (200 μmol m−2 s−1) for 6 h. Both the maximal photochemical efficiency of Photosystem II (PSII) (F v/F m) and the content of active P700 (ΔI/I o) significantly decreased after chilling treatment under 200 μmol m−2 s−1 light. After the leaves were transferred to 25°C, F v/F m recovered quickly under both 200 and 15 μmol m−2 s−1 light. ΔI/I o recovered quickly under 15 μmol m−2 s−1 light, but the recovery rate of ΔI/I o was slower than that of F v/F m. The cyclic electron transport was inhibited by chilling-light treatment obviously. The recovery of ΔI/I o was severely suppressed by 200 μmol m−2 s−1 light, whereas a pretreatment with DCMU effectively relieved this suppression. The cyclic electron transport around PSI recovered in a similar way as the active P700 content did, and the recovery of them was both accelerated by pretreatment with DCMU. The results indicate that limiting electron transport from PSII to PSI protected PSI from further photoinhibition, accelerating the recovery of PSI. Under a given photon flux density, faster recovery of PSII compared to PSI was detrimental to the recovery of PSI or even to the whole photosystem.  相似文献

Rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E), and leaf temperature (TL) of maintenance leaves of tea under plucking were affected by photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD) of 200–2 200 μmol m−2 s−1. P N gradually increased with the increase of PPFD from 200 to 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 and thereafter sharply declined. Maximum P N was 13.95 μmol m−2 s−1 at 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD. There was no significant variation of P N among PPFD at 1 400–1 800 μmol m−2 s−1. Significant drop of P N occurred at 2 000 μmol m−2 s−1. PPFD at 2 200 μmol m−2 s−1 reduced photosynthesis to 6.92 μmol m−2 s−1. PPFD had a strong correlation with TL and E. Both TL and E linearly increased from 200 to 2 200 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD. TL and E were highly correlated. The optimum TL for maximum P N was 26.0 °C after which P N declined significantly. E had a positive correlation with P N.  相似文献

The concept of using higher plants to maintain a sustainable life support system for humans during long-duration space missions is dependent upon photosynthesis. The effects of extended exposure to microgravity on the development and functioning of photosynthesis at the leaf and stand levels were examined onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The PESTO (Photosynthesis Experiment Systems Testing and Operations) experiment was the first long-term replicated test to obtain direct measurements of canopy photosynthesis from space under well-controlled conditions. The PESTO experiment consisted of a series of 21–24 day growth cycles of Triticum aestivum L. cv. USU Apogee onboard ISS. Single leaf measurements showed no differences in photosynthetic activity at the moderate (up to 600 μmol m−2 s−1) light levels, but reductions in whole chain electron transport, PSII, and PSI activities were measured under saturating light (>2,000 μmol m−2 s−1) and CO2 (4000 μmol mol−1) conditions in the microgravity-grown plants. Canopy level photosynthetic rates of plants developing in microgravity at ∼280 μmol m−2 s−1 were not different from ground controls. The wheat canopy had apparently adapted to the microgravity environment since the CO2 compensation (121 vs. 118 μmol mol−1) and PPF compensation (85 vs. 81 μmol m−2 s−1) of the flight and ground treatments were similar. The reduction in whole chain electron transport (13%), PSII (13%), and PSI (16%) activities observed under saturating light conditions suggests that microgravity-induced responses at the canopy level may occur at higher PPF intensity.  相似文献
