Local cytokine therapy of cancer: interleukin-2, interferons and related cytokines

 Local therapy with interleukin-2 (IL-2) and other cytokines may be a very effective way to treat cancer. This was the theme of the First Symposium on Local Cytokine Therapy of Cancer: Interleukin-2, Interferons and Related Cytokines, in Hamburg, 29 April–1 May 1999. Transcription and processing map of the 4.5S-5S rRNA intergenic region (ITS3) from rapeseed (Brassica napus) chloroplasts

Brassica napus   can be applied to other known plant sequences. The conservation of those sequences suggests a functional role for them possibly by providing recognition structures for endogenous RNases involved in the 4.5S rRNA-5S rRNA maturing process. Most of the processing signals detected here are located at single-stranded regions of a proposed secondary structure. Arenopontia (Neoleptastacus) huysi, sp. nov. (Crustacea, Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from marine interstitial of Montenegro (S.E. Europe)

A new species of Arenopontia (Neoleptastacus) is described on the basis of a single female collected from one sandy beach in Montenegro, Adriatic Sea. With the addition of the new species, the subgenus Neoleptastacus now includes 18 species throughout the world. At the end of this paper there is a key for their determination. Use of green fluorescent protein for detection of transformed shoots and homozygous offspring

 Using tobacco as a model system, the data obtained demonstrated that the green fluorescent protein (GFP) can be used as a visual selection marker for transformed tissues. Based on differences in the intensity of GFP fluorescence, homozygous and hemizygous states could be easily visualized in seeds and seedlings of the T1 generation. These results were confirmed by genetic analysis. Optimized conditions for GFP analysis of stable transformants are presented. Review of the stiletto fly genus Actenomeros Winterton & Irwin (Diptera, Therevidae, Agapophytinae)

The endemic Australian genus Actenomeros Winterton & Irwin, 1999b is reviewed. Three species are transferred from Nanexila Winterton & Irwin, 1999a: Actenomeros aureilineata (Winterton & Irwin, 1999a) comb. n., Actenomeros intermedia (Winterton & Irwin, 1999a) comb. n. and Actenomeros paradoxa (Winterton & Irwin, 1999a) comb. n. A new species (Actenomeros budawangsp. n.) is described and figured from New South Wales. A key to species is presented.

DNA hydrolysis by inorganic catalysts

Non-enzymatic reagents that efficiently promote the hydrolytic cleavage of DNA currently receive much attention since they have many potential applications in molecular biology. This review focuses on recent progress in the hydrolysis of the phosphodiester backbone of DNA by metal ions and metal complexes. Pioneering work on the sequence-selective DNA scission by an artificial restriction enzyme, which is prepared by covalent attachment of a cerium(IV) complex to an antisense-deoxyoligonucleotide, is discussed. An improved optical technique for monitoring plant cell concentration

 An improved optical method was developed to determine cell weight concentrations using a micro-plate reader. Light absorbance was measured by a vertical light beam, which can minimize the cell settling effect found in traditional optical measurements with a horizontal light beam. The use of well plates not only requires very small sample sizes, but also handles a large number of samples at the same time. 从形态学角度研究了蚜科Aphididae长管蚜亚科Macrosiphidinae戏蚜Sportaphis sporta Zhang和扁蓄蓼蚜Polygonaphis aciculansucta Zhang的分类地位。结果表明：戏蚜为静细长蚜Tenuilongiaphis stata Zhang and Zhong的同物异名,扁蓄蓼蚜为扁蓄童盾蚜Aspidaphis adjuvas (Walker)的同物异名; 戏蚜属Sportaphis Zhang为细长蚜属Tenuilongiaphis Zhang的同物异名,蓼蚜属Polygonaphis Zhang为盾蚜属Aspidaphis Gillette的同物异名。研究标本保存在中国科学院动物研究所动物标本馆、美国伊利诺伊大学 Illinois Natural History Survey（INHS）和法国自然历史博物馆（NHMF）。     

APHE-3, a spore-associated antibiotic of Streptomyces griseocarneus NCIMB 40447

Solid cultures of the producing strain grown on Bennett medium develop abundant mycelium and intense sporulation. Under these conditions biosynthesis of APHE antibiotics (APHE-1 to -3) is accomplished. Further studies show that APHE-3 is basically produced during spore formation and mostly present in spores, while APHE-1 and APHE-2 are the predominant antibiotics in the mycelium. APHE compounds are present in almost all streptomycetes tested, indicating a possible role in the life cycle of these microorganisms.
