Ants are able to climb effortlessly on vertical and inverted smooth surfaces. When climbing, their feet touch the substrate not only with their pretarsal adhesive pads but also with dense arrays of fine hairs on the ventral side of the 3rd and 4th tarsal segments. To understand what role these different attachment structures play during locomotion, we analysed leg kinematics and recorded single-leg ground reaction forces in Weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) climbing vertically on a smooth glass substrate. We found that the ants engaged different attachment structures depending on whether their feet were above or below their Centre of Mass (CoM). Legs above the CoM pulled and engaged the arolia (‘toes’), whereas legs below the CoM pushed with the 3rd and 4th tarsomeres (‘heels’) in surface contact. Legs above the CoM carried a significantly larger proportion of the body weight than legs below the CoM. Force measurements on individual ant tarsi showed that friction increased with normal load as a result of the bending and increasing side contact of the tarsal hairs. On a rough sandpaper substrate, the tarsal hairs generated higher friction forces in the pushing than in the pulling direction, whereas the reverse effect was found on the smooth substrate. When the tarsal hairs were pushed, buckling was observed for forces exceeding the shear forces found in climbing ants. Adhesion forces were small but not negligible, and higher on the smooth substrate. Our results indicate that the dense tarsal hair arrays produce friction forces when pressed against the substrate, and help the ants to push outwards during horizontal and vertical walking.  相似文献

The attachment ability of insects on surfaces are associated not only with the micro- and nanostructure of the adhering part of an attachment device, but also with the global scale kinematics responsible for contact formation and release. In the present study, the locomotory techniques of several representatives of insects from four different orders (Orthoptera, Heteroptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera), possessing different types of attachment structures, are described. The study is based on video recordings of insects walking on a flat surface and on cylindrical rods of various thickness, imitating plant stems. Attachment devices of tarsi and pretarsi were visualized using Scanning Electron Microscopy. The results show a different manner in the use of adhesive structures on substrates with various curvatures. Insects bearing attachment pads on proximal tarsomeres usually touch flat and curved substrates using all tarsomeres, whereas insects with their attachment devices on the distal tarsomeres usually walk on flat surfaces using the distal tarsomeres of the overextended tarsus. On substrates, with diameters comparable to or larger than the tarsus length, insects walk above the stem by clasping the stem with the bent tarsi. On thin stems, insects clasp the stem between their tarsi and hang under the stem. Thus, on thin and thick rods, forces applied to attachment organs act in opposite directions. There are two methods of leg positioning for walking on a rough flat substrate. In the first case, the tarsus is straightened and the rough substrate is gripped between the claws and the proximal complex of attachment devices (tarsal euplantulae, fossulae spongiosa, and terminal spurs of tibiae). In the second case the tibia does not touch the substrate; the insect is supported only by distal tarsomeres. The tarsus is in an overextended condition. On rods, with diameters comparable to or larger than the tarsus length, insects walk by clasping the stem with the bent tarsi. This posture is characteristic for the majority of insects independent of the tarsal position they normally use while walking on a plane. If the rod’s diameter is smaller than the tarsus length, walking insects usually clutch it between contralateral tarsi. Using such a posture they are supported by interlocking or by strong friction, generated by attachment devices of the proximal tarsomeres, and do not use attachment devices of the pretarsus. Contact with the substrate is reinforced due to the coordinated contralateral clutch using all supporting legs. Despite several studies on the attachment ability of different insect taxa, little is known about this phenomenon in adult Lepidoptera. In this study we combined morphological and experimental analyses of tarsal adhesive devices and the attachment ability of the codling moth Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) to smooth surfaces. Pretarsi of C. pomonella attach to smooth substrates by means of their smooth, flexible and well developed arolia. Using the centrifugal force measurement technique, friction forces of males and females were assessed on hydrophobic and hydrophilic glass surfaces. Adults of both sexes generated similar forces in spite of the noticeable difference in their body masses. That is why males showed significantly higher safety factors (attachment force divided by body weight) compared to those of females. Hydrophobicity of the substrate had no considerable effect on friction forces. For females, friction forces (sliding parallel to the substrate plane) were compared with adhesive forces (pulling off perpendicularly from the substrate plane) measured on Plexiglas surfaces. It can be concluded that the attachment system of C. pomonella is rather robust against physico-chemical properties of the substrate and is able to achieve a very good attachment on vertical and horizontal substrata.  相似文献

Host plant surfaces of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae), vary in microtopography, which can affect its attachment, locomotion, and oviposition behaviour. This study was performed to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the attachment ability of adult insects. Using a centrifugal force device, friction forces of both sexes were assessed on six epoxy resin substrates differing only in the dimensions of their surface asperities, ranging from 0 μm to 12 μm. Surface topography significantly affected friction forces. Maximal force was measured on the smooth substrate whereas minimal force was assessed on microrough substrates with 0.3 μm and 1.0 μm size of asperities. On the remaining rough substrates, friction forces were significantly higher but still lower than on the smooth substrate. Both sexes generated similar forces on the same substrate, in spite of the considerable difference in their body mass. Thus, it is expected that both sexes can attach effectively to differently structured plant substrates in their habitat. However, since smooth surfaces have been reported previously to be the most favorable substrates for ovipositing females of C. pomonella, it is possible that they use their attachment system to sense the substrate texture and prefer those substrates to which their arolia attach the best.  相似文献

Stick insects (Carausius morosus) have two distinct types of attachment pad per leg, tarsal “heel” pads (euplantulae) and a pre-tarsal “toe” pad (arolium). Here we show that these two pad types are specialised for fundamentally different functions. When standing upright, stick insects rested on their proximal euplantulae, while arolia were the only pads in surface contact when hanging upside down. Single-pad force measurements showed that the adhesion of euplantulae was extremely small, but friction forces strongly increased with normal load and coefficients of friction were 1. The pre-tarsal arolium, in contrast, generated adhesion that strongly increased with pulling forces, allowing adhesion to be activated and deactivated by shear forces, which can be produced actively, or passively as a result of the insects'' sprawled posture. The shear-sensitivity of the arolium was present even when corrected for contact area, and was independent of normal preloads covering nearly an order of magnitude. Attachment of both heel and toe pads is thus activated partly by the forces that arise passively in the situations in which they are used by the insects, ensuring safe attachment. Our results suggest that stick insect euplantulae are specialised “friction pads” that produce traction when pressed against the substrate, while arolia are “true” adhesive pads that stick to the substrate when activated by pulling forces.  相似文献

Many representatives of the beetle family Chrysomelidae exhibit a distinctive sexual dimorphism in the structure of adhesive tarsal setae. The present study demonstrates the influence of surface roughness on the friction force of Leptinotarsa decemlineata males and females. The maximum friction force of individual beetles was measured on epoxy resin surfaces (smooth and with asperities ranging from 0.3 to 12.0 microm) using a centrifugal force tester. On the smooth surface, no considerable differences between males and females were found, whereas on rough surfaces, females attached significantly (up to two times) stronger than males. Clawless beetles generated lower forces than intact ones, but demonstrated similar differences between males and females. The results indicate that the female adhesive system has its main functional trait in a stronger specialisation to rough plant surfaces whereas the adhesive system of males possess a certain trade-off between attachment to rough plant surfaces during locomotion on vegetation and to the smooth surface of the female elytra, while mating.  相似文献

The southern green stink bug Nezara viridula L. (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae) is highly polyphagous, preferring apically situated seeds and fruits on more than 150 plant species belonging to over 30 plant families all over the world. This forces them to move over highly variable terrains, including plant stems, leaves, pods and buds, which requires efficient attachment. Stink bugs have long slender legs and feet (tarsi) equipped with paired curved claws, paired soft adhesive pads (pulvilli), and flattened lanceolate hairs (setae), which arise ventrally on the first and second foot segments (tarsomeres). To characterize their attachment abilities on well‐defined test substrates, here we comparatively measured and analyzed the traction forces of bugs walking horizontally and vertically on hydrophilic (water attractive) and hydrophobic (water repellent) glass plates and rods. The latter correspond to the geometry of preferred feeding sites of stink bugs in the field. The results show a clear contribution of tarsal flattened lanceolate hairs to the stink bug's attachment. Higher traction forces are generated on a glass rod than on a glass plate, corresponding to up to individual maximum of 43 times the stink bug's body weight. Substrate hydrophobicity promotes the attachment, while the measured forces are up to eight times lower when tarsal hairs are disabled. The combination of smooth and hairy tarsal pads results in a remarkable attachment ability, which enables N. viridula to climb unstable apical plant parts, and supports their invasive behavior and global dispersion.  相似文献

Sensory signals of contact and engagement with the substrate are important in the control and adaptation of posture and locomotion. We characterized responses of campaniform sensilla, receptors that encode forces as cuticular strains, in the tarsi (feet) of cockroaches using neurophysiological techniques and digital imaging. A campaniform sensillum on the fourth tarsal segment was readily identified by its large action potential in nerve recordings. The receptor discharged to contractions of the retractor unguis muscle, which engages the pretarsus (claws and arolium) with the substrate. We mimicked the effects of muscle contractions by applying displacements to the retractor apodeme (tendon). Sensillum firing did not occur to unopposed movements, but followed engagement of the claws with an object. Vector analysis of forces suggested that resisted muscle contractions produce counterforces that axially compress the tarsal segments. Close joint packing of tarsal segments was clearly observed following claw engagement. Physiological experiments showed that the sensillum responded vigorously to axial forces applied directly to the distal tarsus. Discharges of tarsal campaniform sensilla could effectively signal active substrate engagement when the pretarsal claws and arolium are used to grip the substrate in climbing, traversing irregular terrains or walking on inverted surfaces.  相似文献

The mechanics of substrate adhesion has recently been intensively studied in insects but less is known about the sensorimotor control of substrate engagement. We characterized the responses and motor effects of tarsal campaniform sensilla in stick insects to understand how sensory signals of force could contribute to substrate grip. The tarsi consist of a chain of segments linked by highly flexible articulations. Morphological studies showed that one to four campaniform sensilla are located on the distal end of each segment. Activities of the receptors were recorded neurographically and sensilla were identified by stimulation and ablation of their cuticular caps. Responses were characterized to bending forces and axial loads, muscle contractions and to forces applied to the retractor apodeme (tendon). The tarsal sensilla effectively encoded both the rate and amplitude of loads and muscle forces, but only when movement was resisted. Mechanical stimulation of the receptors produced activation of motor neurons in the retractor unguis and tibial flexor muscles. These findings indicate that campaniform sensilla can provide information about the effectiveness of the leg muscles in generating substrate adherence. They can also produce positive force feedback that could contribute to the development of substrate grip and stabilization of the tarsal chain.  相似文献

Insect tarsal attachment forces are thought to be influenced by the viscosity and surface tension of a thin film of adhesive liquid (wet adhesion). In beetles, this fluid has been shown to be composed mainly of lipophilic substances that are similar to the cuticular lipids. In this study we investigate whether and how the chemical composition of footprint lipids affects attachment forces in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata. After application of standardised mixtures of synthetic n-alkanes or alkenes, or a concentrated hydrocarbon extract to the surface of the elytra, we tested the beetles’ attachment performance using a beam force transducer. The results show that only the unsaturated components, but not the straight-chained alkanes reduced friction forces, confirming that attachment performance is influenced by the chemical composition of the adhesive secretion. We estimated the volume of footprint droplets and calculated a mean thickness of the liquid layer of 0.04 μm. The measured friction exceeded the viscous and capillary force expected for a film of this thickness. Therefore, alternative mechanisms (i.e. shear-thinning and solid-like behaviour) for the generation of attachment forces and their dependence on the chemical composition of the liquid are discussed.  相似文献

Background

Many arachnids possess adhesive pads on their feet that help them climb smooth surfaces and capture prey. Spider and gecko adhesives have converged on a branched, hairy structure, which theoretically allows them to adhere solely by dry (solid-solid) intermolecular interactions. Indeed, the consensus in the literature is that spiders and their smooth-padded relatives, the solifugids, adhere without the aid of a secretion.

Methodology and Principal Findings

We investigated the adhesive contact zone of living spiders, solifugids and mites using interference reflection microscopy, which allows the detection of thin liquid films. Like insects, all the arachnids we studied left behind hydrophobic fluid footprints on glass (mean refractive index: 1.48–1.50; contact angle: 3.7–11.2°). Fluid was not always secreted continuously, suggesting that pads can function in both wet and dry modes. We measured the attachment forces of single adhesive setae from tarantulas (Grammostola rosea) by attaching them to a bending beam with a known spring constant and filming the resulting deflection. Individual spider setae showed a lower static friction at rest (26%±2.8 SE of the peak friction) than single gecko setae (Thecadactylus rapicauda; 96%±1.7 SE). This may be explained by the fact that spider setae continued to release fluid after isolation from the animal, lubricating the contact zone.

Significance

This finding implies that tarsal secretions occur within all major groups of terrestrial arthropods with adhesive pads. The presence of liquid in an adhesive contact zone has important consequences for attachment performance, improving adhesion to rough surfaces and introducing rate-dependent effects. Our results leave geckos and anoles as the only known representatives of truly dry adhesive pads in nature. Engineers seeking biological inspiration for synthetic adhesives should consider whether model species with fluid secretions are appropriate to their design goals.  相似文献

Evolutionarily optimized frictional devices of insects are usually adapted to attach to a variety of natural surfaces. Orthopteran attachment pads are composed of hexagonal outgrowths with smooth flexible surfaces. The pads are designed to balance the weight of the insect in different positions and on different materials. In a scanning electron microscopy study followed by freezing-substitution experiments, the ultrastructural architecture of the pad material was visualized. In friction experiments, the interaction was measured between the attachment pad and a polished silicon surface. The inner structure of this material contains distally directed rods, branching close to the surface, and spaces filled with fluid. The specific design of the pad material provides a higher frictional force in the distal direction. Frictional anisotropy is more enhanced at higher normal forces and lower sliding velocities. It is concluded that optimal mechanical functionality of biosystems is the result of a combination of surface structuring and material design.  相似文献

Accurate measurement of ground reaction forces under discrete areas of the foot is important in the development of more advanced foot models, which can improve our understanding of foot and ankle function. To overcome current equipment limitations, a few investigators have proposed combining a pressure mat with a single force platform and using a proportionality assumption to estimate subarea shear forces and free moments. In this study, two adjacent force platforms were used to evaluate the accuracy of the proportionality assumption on a three segment foot model during normal gait. Seventeen right feet were tested using a targeted walking approach, isolating two separate joints: transverse tarsal and metatarsophalangeal. Root mean square (RMS) errors in shear forces up to 6% body weight (BW) were found using the proportionality assumption, with the highest errors (peak absolute errors up to 12% BW) occurring between the forefoot and toes in terminal stance. The hallux exerted a small braking force in opposition to the propulsive force of the forefoot, which was unaccounted for by the proportionality assumption. While the assumption may be suitable for specific applications (e.g. gait analysis models), it is important to understand that some information on foot function can be lost. The results help highlight possible limitations of the assumption. Measured ensemble average subarea shear forces during normal gait are also presented for the first time.  相似文献

In the present study, the tarsal attachment pads (euplantulae) of two stick insect species (Phasmatodea) were compared. While the euplantulae of Cuniculina impigra (syn. Medauroidea extradentata) are smooth, those of Carausius morosus bear small nubs on their surfaces. In order to characterize the adhesive and frictional properties of both types of euplantulae, adhesion and friction measurements on smooth (Ra=0.054 μm) and rough (Ra=1.399 μm) substrates were carried out. The smooth pads of C. impigra generated stronger adhesion on the smooth substrate than on the rough one. The adhesive forces of the structured pads of C. morosus did not differ between the two substrates. Friction experiments showed anisotropy for both species with higher values for proximal pulls than for distal pushes. In C. impigra, friction was stronger on the smooth than on the rough surface for both directions, whereas in C. morosus friction was stronger on the smooth surface only for pushes. This shows that smooth attachment pads are able to generate relatively stronger adhesion and friction on a flat smooth surface than on a rough one. In contrast, nubby pads have similar adhesion on both substrates, and also show no difference in friction in the pulling direction. This leads to the conclusion that smooth pads are specialized for rather smooth substrates, whereas nubby pads are better adapted to generate stronger forces on a broader range of surfaces.  相似文献

Two combined mechanisms on the hornet tarsus are adapted to attachment to the substrate: a friction-based (claws and spines) and an adhesion-based one (arolium). There are two ranges of substrate roughness optimal for attachment, either very smooth or very rough. There is an intermediate range of substrate grains of small but non-zero size, where both of these mechanisms fail. The optimal size of substrate grains for hornet grasping was 50-100 microm. Maximal hold to the substrate was achieved when surface irregularities were clamped between the claws of opposite legs. In such a position, the insect could withstand an external force which was almost 25 times larger than its own weight. The tarsal chain is an important part of the entire attachment mechanism. The articulations in the kinematic chain of tibia-tarsus-pretarsus are monocondylar. Three tarsal muscles and one head of the claw retractor muscle originate in the tibia. On pull to the retractor tendon, the tarsus bends in a plane. All elements of the tarsal kinematic chain have one active degree of freedom. The distance between the intertarsomeric articulation point and the tendon of the claw retractor (75-194 microm) corresponds to an efficiency of 1 degrees per 1-3 mircom of pulling distance travelled by the tendon. The claw turns about 1 degrees per 4.3-5.0 microm of pulling distance travelled by the unguitractor. The arolium turns forward and downward simultaneously with flexion of the claws. The kinematic chain of the arolium lacks real condylar joints except the joint at the base of the manubrium. Other components are tied by flexible transmissions of the membranous cuticle. The walking hornet rests on distal tarsomeres of extended tarsi. If the retractor tendon inside the tarsus is fixed, passive extension of the tarsomeres might be replaced by claw flexion. Tarsal chain rigidity, measured with the force tester, increased when the retractor tendon was tightened. Probably, pull to the tendon compresses the tarsomeres, increasing friction within contacting areas of rippled surfaces surrounding condyles within articulations.  相似文献

Many insects possess smooth adhesive pads on their legs, which adhere by thin films of a two-phasic secretion. To understand the function of such fluid-based adhesive systems, we simultaneously measured adhesion, friction and contact area in single pads of stick insects (Carausius morosus). Shear stress was largely independent of normal force and increased with velocity, seemingly consistent with the viscosity-effect of a continuous fluid film. However, measurements of the remaining force 2 min after a sliding movement show that adhesive pads can sustain considerable static friction. Repeated sliding movements and multiple consecutive pull-offs to deplete adhesive secretion showed that on a smooth surface, friction and adhesion strongly increased with decreasing amount of fluid. In contrast, pull-off forces significantly decreased on a rough substrate. Thus, the secretion does not generally increase attachment but does so only on rough substrates, where it helps to maximize contact area. When slides were repeated at one position so that secretion could accumulate, sliding shear stress decreased but static friction remained clearly present. This suggests that static friction which is biologically important to prevent sliding is based on non-Newtonian properties of the adhesive emulsion rather than on a direct contact between the cuticle and the substrate.  相似文献

Insects have developed different structures to adhere to surfaces. Most common are smooth and hairy attachment pads, while nubby pads have also been described for representatives of Mantophasmatodea, Phasmida and Plecoptera. Here we report on the unusual combination of nubby and smooth tarsal attachment structures in the !nara cricket Acanthoproctus diadematus. Their three proximal tarsal pads (euplantulae) have a nubby surface, whereas the most distal euplantula is rather smooth with a hexagonal ground pattern resembling that described for the great green bush-cricket Tettigonia viridissima. This is, to our knowledge, the first report on nubby euplantulae in Orthoptera and the co-occurrence of nubby and smooth euplantulae on a single tarsus in a polyneopteran species. When adhering upside down to a horizontal glass plate, A. diadematus attaches its nubby euplantulae less often, compared to situations in which the animal is hanging upright or head down on a vertical plate. We discuss possible reasons for this kind of clinging behaviour, such as morphological constrains, the different role of normal and shear forces in attachment enhancement of the nubby and smooth pads, ease of the detachment process, and adaptations to walking on cylindrical substrates.  相似文献

Insects live in a three-dimensional space, and need to be able to attach to different types of surfaces in a variety of environmental and behavioral contexts. Adult leaf beetles possess great attachment ability due to their hairy attachment pads. In contrast, their larvae depend on smooth pads to attach to the same host plant. We tested friction forces generated by larvae and adults of dock leaf beetles Gastrophysa viridula on different rough surfaces, and found that adults generate much higher attachment to various substrates than larvae, but are more susceptible to completely losing attachment ability on surfaces with “critical” roughness. Furthermore, sex-specific setal morphology has the effect that attachment forces of male adults are generally higher than those of females when adjusted for body weight. The results are discussed in the context of development, ecology, and changing behavioral strategies of successive life stages.  相似文献

Phytophagous insects and their natural enemies frequently must cling to plants in order to forage. Typically, this involves attachment to the layer of lipophilic materials, or 'epicuticular waxes' (EW) that covers all primary plant surfaces. EW occurring as crystalline waxy 'blooms' can provide a defense against herbivory by interfering with attachment to plants by phytophagous insects. On the other hand, EW blooms can reduce attachment by predators and parasitoids, potentially releasing populations of phytophagous insects from regulation by their natural enemies. The net effect of EW blooms on herbivory should therefore vary from system to system. When it has been measured, EW bloom typically reduces the attachment forces insects can generate on plants. Some herbivores and predators preferentially forage on plants with EW blooms. Among these, some appear to have physiological or behavioral adaptations that either improve attachment to EW blooms or cope with reduced attachment to plants surfaces bearing EW blooms. How EW blooms disrupt insect attachment and how insects potentially overcome this challenge has not been determined. Some hypotheses are offered in this review. Their elucidation may help understand the mechanics of attachment to plants, with applications including helping to improve biological control of some insect pests.  相似文献
