Solifuges (order Solifugae) and pseudoscorpions (order Pseudoscorpiones) united into the superorder Haplocnemata (Shultz, 2007) are nevertheless characterized by essential differences both in morphological and biological characters. Analysis of available information on the biology and life cycles of these arachnids revealed a clear difference between the daily rhythms of activity: their presence in solifuges and their absence in pseudoscorpions. However, this concerning the seasonal adaptations in the two orders is not simple since they demonstrate not only differences but also a lot of similarities. All the studied solifuges are characterized by the seasonally timed stenochronous (heterodynamic) type of development which is characteristic of species with uni-, bi-, and semi-voltine development (i.e., to life cycles completed within a year, half a year, and several years), as well as to species combining different forms of voltinism. This type of development is not only prevalent in solifuges (as in pseudoscorpions and other arachnids) but appears to be the only one, since no cases of eurychronous (homodynamic) development have been found in solifuges; whereas pseudoscorpions and other arachnids develop both steno- and eurychronously. The initial ontogenetic stages remain in underground shelters (brood burrows in solifuges and brood chambers in pseudoscorpions). The first nymphal stages (I instar nymphs in solifuges, protonymphs in pseudoscorpions) are embryonized; active life outside the brood burrows starts with II instar nymphs in solifuges and with deutonymphs in pseudoscorpions.  相似文献

Endemism in Namibia: patterns, processes and predictions   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Sandwiched between the Namib and Kalahari Deserts of southwestern Africa are the karooid and escarpment biotopes of Namibia which are rich in endemics of many taxa. Most plant, invertebrate, amphibian, reptile, mammal and bird species endemic to Namibia are found in a zone running through, and to the west of, Namibia's escarpment region. There is also an important region of endemism for succulent plants, reptiles and invertebrates in the Succulent Karoo biome. Congruence between endemism hotspots, particularly on rocky substrates, is remarkably high for most taxa, implying broadly similar speciation processes. Possible speciation mechanisms in different parts of the country include the spatial isolation of rupicolous taxa such as insects and reptiles by the formation of large coastal dune fields; the expansion and contraction of wooded savannas during pluvial and interpluvial periods; and global temperature shifts which created highland refugia for frost-susceptible plants and poikilotherms. Areas of endemism and species richness overlap poorly for Namibia's mainly arid-dwelling endemic vertebrates, as richness is highest in the mesic wetlands and woodlands of northeast Namibia. The overlap for succulent plants, insects and arachnids, however, is relatively high. Centres of endemism for plants and vertebrates fall mainly outside protected areas, as few parks were established with biodiversity indices in mind. Our analysis of endemism congruence provides a strong platform for the promulgation of new protected areas to safeguard Namibia's unique biota. Furthermore, analysis of speciation patterns and processes is a useful predictive tool for the identification of other biotically important sites.  相似文献

A new arachnid (Chelicerata: Arachnida) from the Lower Carboniferous (Upper Viséan) Szczawno Formation of Kamienna Göra, Poland, is described asSchneidarachne saganii n. gen. et n. sp. Early Carboniferous arachnids are generally rare and this new fossil cannot be easily assigned to any of the known arachnid Orders. It shares a number of features with some members of the arachnid order Solifugae (camel spiders, sun spiders): namely large, forward-projecting, chelate chelicerae with dentate fixed and free fingers, a distinct median sulcus on the carapace and an interrupted ridge of tubercles on the dorsal opisthosoma set into a loosely-defïned median field. However, it lacks unequivocal autapomorphies of Solifugae. This fossil may be one of a growing number of stem-group Palaeozoic arachnids which lack the füll set of diagnostic characters seen in crown-group members of the various orders. Thus,Schneidarachne saganii could represent a basai member of the lineage leading up to modem solifuges.  相似文献

Namibia is an arid country but has a diverse array of wetland habitats ranging from ephemeral water bodies and rain-pools, artesian springs supporting small perennial pools and streams, to the large perennial rivers of the north-east with their associated floodplains. These rivers drain wetter areas north of Namibia and contribute many tropical species to Namibia's wetlands. There are 778 described species of macro-invertebrates representing eight phyla with 81 endemics. Many invertebrates still have to be identified or described but presently the greatest endemism occurs among the Ostracoda (18 species), Coleoptera (17), Diptera (14), Anostraca (six) and Amphipoda (five species). In total, Namibia has 50 species of frog with three endemics. No caecilians or salamanders occur in Namibia. There are 114 species of freshwater fish with five endemics. Most Namibian wetlands occur outside protected areas. Over-exploitation of wetland resources and flow regulation are currently major threats, but new environmental legislation being formulated is based on the goal of sustainable use.  相似文献

Namibia supports a highly diverse avifauna of 644 species, including over 90 species endemic to the southern African subregion and 13 species endemic to the country. Patterns of species diversity in relation to protected areas and habitat types were analysed using data from the Southern African Bird Atlas Project. A modified Shannon index appropriate for atlas data was used to derive an index of diversity for all species, wetland, terrestrial, threatened, and regional endemic species. Species richness for Namibian endemics was mapped. Overall species diversity is highest in the northeast of Namibia where wetland and riparian habitats coincide. Both wetland and terrestrial species show highest diversity in this area. The greatest diversity of southern African endemics falls within the Savanna-Karoo systems. Several key areas are identified for red data species, including the Caprivi Strip, Kunene and Orange Rivers, coastal wetlands and ephemeral river mouths and pans. This highlights the pressures operating on wetland and riparian habitats in arid environments. Concentrations of Namibian endemics are found in the northwestern (Kaoko) escarpment of the country. Although much of the area of high diversity of wetland, terrestrial and red data species falls within protected areas, national and regional endemics are poorly represented within national parks.  相似文献

The ecology of selected species of spiders (Araneae), harvestmen (Opiliones), and the neglected tropical order Schizomida, alien to Europe, is discussed. Their geographic origins and pathways of introduction, by transportation with goods, are similar to other predatory terrestrial arthropods. Occurrence in buildings (synanthropy) is a prerequisite for range expansion in many arachnid species. Thelytokous parthenogenesis facilitated spread of a few spider, harvestman and schizomid species outside their native range. Both prey generalists and specialists (woodlice-eating Dysdera crocata and ant-eating Zodarion rubidum) are among species successfully expanding their range. Alien arachnids include individual species belonging to many different families. We stress the absence of true invasiveness of alien arachnids in Europe. Some unusual adverse effects of alien arachnids were recorded, such as pollution of buildings and clogged car fuel system ventilation tubes. Frequency of painful biting and threat to native biota are low.  相似文献

Findings on hemolymph lipoproteins in the class Arachnida are reviewed in relation to their lipid and protein compositions, hydrated densities, the capacity of apoproteins to bind lipids, and the influence of xenobiotics on their structures and functionality. The occurrence of hemolymphatic lipoproteins in arachnids has been reported in species belonging to the orders Araneida, Scorpionida, Solpugida and Acarina. However, lipoproteins were properly characterized in only three species, Eurypelma californicum, Polybetes pythagoricus and Latrodectus mirabilis. Like insect and crustaceans the arachnids examined contain high density lipoproteins (HDLs) as predominant circulating lipoproteins. Although in most arachnids these particles resemble those of insect HDLs called "lipophorins", in two arachnid species they differ from lipophorins in their apoproteins, total mass and lipid composition. The hemolymph of P. pythagoricus and L. mirabilis contains another HDL of higher density, while P. pythagoricus and E. californicum hemolymph contain a third lipoprotein of very high density (VHDL). Composition of arachnid lipoproteins regarding apoprotein classes as well as lipid classes differ among species. Hemocyanin, in addition to the classical role of this protein as respiratory pigment, is presented here performing the function of apolipoprotein in some arachnid species. Reports on experiments demonstrating the capacity of hemocyanin to bind neutral and polar lipid classes, including ecdysteroids, are commented. Recent works about the changes evoked by a phosphorous pesticide on the structures and functionality of spider lipoproteins are also reviewed.  相似文献

Opiliones are an order of arachnids commonly known as harvestmen. Although they belong to the class of arachnids, harvestmen are not spiders. Harvestmen are well known for their exceptionally long legs compared to body size, and the made up of two main parts, cephalothorax and abdomen. Although over 6,400 species of harvestmen have been discovered worldwide, the research on these arachnids is still an unexplored field comparing to spiders or insects. The Harvestmen is the Arachnids disregarded to Korean researchers. Therefore, in Korea, it doesn't become nearly the investigation of the harvestmen. Histological data about the harvestmen tries to be provided through the research of the internal structure of the harvestmen. The study of structures of the opiliones was made with the histological image and it focused mainly on the eye, leg, and genital organs.  相似文献

Habitat loss due to forest degradation can induce changes in species richness due to variation in species susceptibility to environmental stress. This is particularly important for species with highly specific microhabitats, such as scorpions that inhabit forest habitats. In this study, the richness and abundance of these arachnids were compared between an old-growth (mature) and secondary (65 years under natural restoration) forests. Seasonal influence was also evaluated by comparing diversity between dry and wet seasons. The animals were collected through nocturnal active search using UV lamps and pitfall traps in both areas (old-growth and secondary). Both environments showed similar breast heights of trees, litter depth, litter dry mass, and understory density, indicating a high level of restoration. Scorpion diversity (characterized by Tityus pusillus, T. neglectus, T. brazilae, Bothriurus asper, and Ananteris mauryi) and abundance were not influenced by the different historical usage of both areas. In contrast, the abundance of these arachnids was highly affected by rain regimes, and increased during the dry season. These results suggest that 65 years was a sufficient time period for restoration, making it possible to maintain similar scorpion assemblages in both environments.  相似文献

The only data previously recorded on the diet of the critically endangered, endemic Seychelles Scops Owl, Otus insularis, is from the stomach contents of a few museum specimens and analysis of one pellet. Data are presented on more than 400 prey items identified from pellets and video recordings of provisioning at two nests. Pellets comprised exclusively of invertebrate remains: Orthoptera (64%), Coleoptera (14%), arachnids (11%) and other invertebrates (11%). Similarly, 111 (76%) of all items identified during 145 provisioning visits at two nests were invertebrates. Seventy-three (66%) were identified to morphospecies and comprised Orthoptera (93%), arachnids (4%) and Lepidoptera (3%). The diet of scops owls inhabiting areas of different altitudes (180-700m asl) was similar. Identification of prey taxa and species suggests that a significant amount of foraging takes place from foliage and on tree trunks, not just on the ground.  相似文献

Stridulation in solifuges has not been investigated yet. We performed a comparative analysis of the stridulatory organs and sounds produced by juveniles of various developmental stages and adults (both sexes) of Galeodes caspius subfuscus Birula. The stridulatory organ is of similar morphology in all developmental stages. The sound that they produced was a broad frequency hissing, composed of one or two chirps with maximum at 2.4 kHz. The intensity of the sound was found to increase with body size. Otherwise, no differences were observed between stridulation in juvenile, male and female individuals. Therefore, we suggest that the stridulation in solifuges has primarily a defensive role. As solifuges are neither venomous nor unpalatable, they might imitate an accoustically aposematic organism that shares the same habitat and has similar circadian activity, e.g. vipers. It may also have an intraspecific function in reduction of cannibalistic tendencies.  相似文献

This paper attempts to review all those factors that affect the winter trophic relations of soricines in northern, Holarctic areas, from physiological and ecological aspects to prey and predators. Winter is generally a time of food scarcity and low temperatures, often accompanied by snow cover. Winter shrews are characterized by decreased metabolic rates, longer periods in the nest, short foraging periods and the subsequent decreased need to forage. In smaller species the diet generally consists of epigean fauna, while in larger species hypogean fauna is also included, the proportions of which vary seasonally. In areas of snow cover their diets are derived from the subnivean fauna, i.e. soil and litter fauna, overwintering on the soil surface, and consist of many insects, especially beetles, arachnids, small vertebrates and carrion. Their predators include owls and, to a lesser extent, weasels and foxes.  相似文献

Analysis is presented of the characteristics of spheres coating the chorion surface of the eggs from 41 species belonging to 15 families of spiders. Examples of eggs from the arachnid orders Opiliones, Amblypygi and Uropygi are illustrated for the first time. The spheres are unique, among arachnids, to the Araneae. Their form and size class distributions overlap considerably between families and the spheres are present in all 22 families of Araneae that have been examined; they represent a very conservative morphological feature in the evolution of the Araneae. Evidence of specialized regions of the egg surface (micropyllar areas and plastrons) was found only in an opilionid. As spiders' eggs are laid in silk egg sacs, mostly in clutches, the possible effects of these characteristics are discussed from evidence in the literature and from a functional theoretic stance.  相似文献

Phylogeographic patterns in wide-ranging species in southern Africa remain largely unexplored, especially in areas north of South Africa. Here, we investigate population structuring, demographic history, and the colonization pattern of the western rock skink (Trachylepis sulcata), a rock-dwelling species with a range extending from southwestern South Africa into Angola. Using 1056 bp from the mitochondrial marker ND2 and > 2.5 kb from three nuclear genes (EXPH5, KIF24, RAG-1), we constructed allele networks, generated extended Bayesian skyline plots and performed population clustering analyses. Analyses of historical demographic patterns show an overall southward range expansion from Northern Namibia into Southern Namibia and South Africa, although we find contrasting genetic breaks across these geographic regions using nuclear and mitochondrial data. We suggest that mtDNA has introgressed across a nuclear break corresponding to the Knersvlakte region of South Africa, a previously proposed biogeographic barrier for rupicolous species. This pattern of mitochondrial variation contrasts sharply to that of other South African taxa previously investigated, which all show significant mtDNA differentiation across the Knersvlakte region. Additionally, while other taxa show divergences dating to the Pliocene, T. sulcata appears to be a recent arrival in southern Africa, having crossed this barrier and colonized South Africa in the mid-Pleistocene. The complex phylogeographic history of T. sulcata corroborates the intricate patterns of genetic variation found in South African taxa and provides novel insight into historical processes affecting species distributed across Namibia.  相似文献

Basketry production is an important informal sector activity in the palm savanna of north-central Namibia, particularly for women. This study assesses the comparative impact of utilization by basket makers and browsing livestock in areas of different human and livestock population pressures on the source of weaving fibre, leaves from juvenile individuals of the vegetable ivory palm,Hyphaene petersiana. Mature individuals of this species are an important source of edible fruit. Destructive uses of mature individuals such as tapping for palm wine and the cutting of stems for construction purposes are also practised, even though they are forbidden by customary law. Unlike other centres of basket production in southern Africa, the level of leaf utilization for basketry is low and there is potential for greater use of this resource. Despite the unpalatability of this species, a cause for concern, however, is the intensity of browsing by domestic livestock on young palms, which may affect the future structure and viability of the palm population in north-central Namibia. This predicted degradation of a multiple-use species such asH. petersiana represents the gradual erosion of an important buffer against rural poverty, loss of income and reduction in food security.  相似文献

Despite the great biodiversity in the Arachnida, some taxa are still now poorly known, mainly in terms of biology, ecology, and behavior. Pseudoscorpions are small arachnids (2–8 mm) that live in cryptic environments, being in general solitary predators of other invertebrates. The most studied Pseudoscorpion species are those from temperate areas, which revealed that Pseudoscorpiones present some level of sociality based on maternal care. Most developed sociality is seen in tropical species. Here, we reviewed this issue, presented examples of social behavior, and suggested the steps involved in the evolution of permanent sociality in the Neotropical Atemnidae genus, Paratemnoides. We discussed that the extended parental care, division of labor, cooperative breeding and feeding, and the tolerance among members dividing the same share could be considered enough to characterize a true social life, same in invertebrates.  相似文献

Complementary abundance gradients of substituting congeneric arachnids along the northern margin of the Alps are described, and the possible historical and contemporary factors that have produced these distributions are explored. The intensities of activity of epigeous arachnids were determined in pitfall traps along seven altitudinal transects approximately 35 km apart in the Bavarian Alps (Germany) and in the county of Salzburg (Austria). No supraregional gradient of physical factors exists within the region investigated. Six pairs of congeners show vicariances or alternating abundance gradients. For each species pair, the abundance gradient is represented in diagrams and compared with a graphic model of substitution types. Three patterns are evident: strict vicariances, abrupt replacement in a narrow belt, and gradual substitution over a wide zone of sympatric occurrence. The different extent of range overlap suggests distinctive classes and intensities of interspecific interactions. With regard to biogeographic histories, one prevailing pattern emerged: endemic species of the eastern Alps are replaced by Eurosiberian counterparts towards the west. It appears that geographical abundance variation reflects colonization history.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and their mycorrhizae were studied in winter rainfall areas of western South Africa. The species composition, spore numbers, and mycorrhization were attempted to correlate with various abiotic factors. Mycorrhization of grasses was significantly correlated with pH and spore numbers and negatively correlated with electric conductivity, total N-content, and total P-content of the soils. Spore numbers were negatively correlated with electric conductivity and total N-content. These relationships observed for the winter rainfall area were compared to data available for summer rainfall areas in Namibia, where the same amount of rain falls. Factors influencing species distribution were geographic distance and to a lesser extent rainfall. Rainfall was a stronger determinant of species composition in the summer rainfall area than in the winter rainfall area. These findings show that abiotic factors alone are not sufficient in explaining species distribution, and that other factors (e.g. the availability of suitable host plants) have to be taken into account when comparing different study sites.  相似文献

Nine species of Teloschisies are recorded from the area and details of their morphology (including considerable ecotypic variation) and distribution are given. All species are illustrated. All relevant type specimens were examined. Four species ( T. chry-sophthalmus, T. exilis, T. flavicans and T. hypoglaucus ) are common in this part of Africa and are also widely distributed elsewhere. T. perrugosus , whose taxonomy has been revised, seems to be endemic to central and southern Africa. T. capensis and T. puber are well-defined endemics of the Atlantic coast in South Africa and Namibia, whereas T. chrysocarpoides occurs in Namibia only. T. pulvinaris , now established as a distinct species, is known only from the type locality in Cape Province.  相似文献

Right whales off Namibia were severely depleted by early 19th century whaling, and rarely featured in modern whaling catches in the 1920s. Aerial surveys of the Namibian coastline from 1978 and onwards revealed increasing numbers of right whales, but few cow‐calf pairs. Aerial surveys off South Africa since 2009 showed a major decline in the availability of animals without calves. Twenty individual matches were made between 94 whales photographed off Namibia/Northern Cape in 2003–2012 and 1,677 photographed off South Africa in 1979–2012. Eight were adult females that calved in South African waters, but only one was also seen with a calf off Namibia. Twelve out of 13 individuals off Namibia with distinctive dorsal pigmentation were first seen as calves off South Africa. These results strongly indicate connectivity between the two regions, while the presence off Namibia of three adult females from the South African population in the season in which they are believed to conceive suggests that there is unlikely to be any genetic differentiation between the two areas. We conclude that the reappearance of right whales off Namibia represents range expansion from South Africa rather than the survival of a few remnants of an originally separate stock.  相似文献
