The aim of the present work was to assess the effect of digenean trematodes on indirect mortality of the cockle Cerastoderma edule, an infaunal bivalve. The tested hypothesis was that parasites altered the burrowing capacity of cockles and thus exposed them at the sediment surface, where they are more vulnerable to predators. If the predator is the final host, this mechanism, which drives the cockle out of the sediment, is considered as a 'favourization'. Cockle populations from 2 stations in Arcachon Bay (France)-Banc d'Arguin (oceanic situation) and La Canelette (lagoonal situation)--were sampled for 1 yr. At La Canelette, monitoring every 2 d showed that 50% of adult cockles regularly migrated to the sediment surface at a rate of 5 cockles m(-2) yr(-1) and disappeared in a few days. In the laboratory, 67% of these 'surface cockles' did not burrow again, suggesting that they would die in the field. Moreover, mortality measured after 7 d in the laboratory was 2 to 5 times higher than mortality of 'buried cockles', at both stations and particularly during summer. Species richness and abundance of digeneans from both stations were compared in 'buried' and 'surface' individuals to determine whether parasites played a role in cockle migration and mortality. Ten and 9 digeneans were found at Banc d'Arguin and La Canelette, respectively, with Himasthla quissetensis and Labratrema minimus being the most prevalent and abundant species at both stations. The abundance of H. quissetensis was slightly higher in surface cockles at Banc d'Arguin, but the difference fluctuated with station and cockle age (or size). L. minimus prevalence was only higher in surface cockles at La Canelette. In the latter station, we estimated that L. minimus and H. quissetensis were responsible for the emergence of 9 and 2%, respectively, of the buried cockles. Although this favourization mechanism may induce some mortality in cockles, it does not alone explain the magnitude of the observed mortalities (41 and 57% at La Canelette and Banc d'Arguin, respectively). A correspondence analysis did not show the presence of a particular parasite community in buried or surface cockles, which could explain these high surface cockle mortalities in association with the 2 dominant digeneans.  相似文献

Parasitism has long been emphasised as an important process structuring animal communities. However, empirical evidence documenting the impact of parasites in other than simple laboratory settings is lacking. Here we examine the trait-mediated indirect effects of echinostome trematodes on a New Zealand soft bottom intertidal community of macroinvertebrates. Curtuteria australis and a second related but undescribed trematode both utilise the cockle Austrovenus stutchburyi as second intermediate host in which the parasites infect the foot tissue. Heavily infected cockles are therefore more sessile than lightly infected individuals, and, unable to bury, often rest on the sediment surface. We utilised these behavioural changes in two long term field experiments, respectively manipulating the parasite load of buried cockle (i.e. bioturbation), and the density of surfaced cockles (i.e. surface structures and seabed hydrodynamics). Both high parasite loads in buried cockles and the presence of surfaced cockles increased species richness and generally also the density of certain species and of major systematic and functional groups of benthic macroinvertebrates. Species diversity (alpha) peaked under intermediate densities of surfaced cockles. Our results demonstrate that parasites, solely through their impact on the behaviour of a single community member, can be significant determinants of animal community structure and function.  相似文献

Summary The presence of empty shells of Laternula elliptica that provide refuge sites for juvenile fishes on the soft-bottom surface of South Bay, Antarctica, has been difficult to explain because this bivalve normally lives deeply buried (>50 cm). L. elliptica individuals unburied and aggregated at the surface by the action of icebergs could be consumed by mobile predators. This paper examines experimentally both burying rates and predation upon unburied L. elliptica in the field at South Bay. Live and intact L. elliptica were hand-collected by diving, and separated in 16 groups of 10 each, and placed on mud-sand bottoms protected from the ice disturbance at a depth of 17 m in South Bay. Eight groups were confined by open wooden frames so as to exclude predators, mainly star-fish and gastropods, the other eight remained as control. Species and number of predators and burying rates were estimated during 23 days. Within the first 24 h, 30% of the bivalves buried themselves, after which, rates fell abruptly. By the end of the day 23, only 60% had successfully buried; of the 40% which remained unburied, 20% were consumed by the following sequence of predators: Odontaster validus, Cryptasterias turqueti, Parborlasia corrugatus, Neobuccinum eatoni and two species of amphipods; all completely consumed one bivalve in 5–7 days. The 20% that remained unburied constituted potential prey though they showed no signs of being attacked by O. validus during the observation period. In addition to serving as prey, L. elliptica provides empty and intact shells used as refuge sites by juvenile fishes.  相似文献

The present report presents the first evidence of disseminated neoplasia (DN) in cockles Cerastoderma edule from Arcachon Bay (France). Aneuploidy of neoplastic cells allowed the use of flow cytometry (FCM) to diagnose and stage DN. A 1 year survey (2007) of the prevalence and intensity (% of aneuploid circulating cells in neoplastic cockles) was conducted. Prevalences ranged from 2.2% (June) to 13.6% (May), and disease intensity ranged from 18.7% (June) to 95.5% (September). These percentages were not correlated with seawater temperature, but rather showed unexplained oscillations over the year. Prevalence and intensity of DN were higher in cockles found at the surface of sediment compared to those buried normally (11.8% vs. 6.7% and 53.0% vs. 40.6%, respectively, p < 0.05). DN could thus be one mechanism leading to unexplained presence of cockles at the surface of the sediment in Arcachon Bay. Ploidy characteristics of neoplastic cells were also investigated using FCM, revealing an unusual, broad continuum of ploidy distribution from 1.6 to 9.6n. Ploidy values were not in whole numbers in contrast to the rounded values reported in other studies. Ploidy varied according to DN intensity, with the ploidy distribution of neoplastic cells from lightly-diseased cockles being unimodal (3.7n median). In contrast, highly-diseased cockles showed a bimodal ploidy distribution (3.0n and 4.7n medians). This suggests that, in cockles from Arcachon Bay, mechanisms leading to aneuploidy are complex, developing during disease progression.  相似文献

Cerastoderma edule is a widely distributed bivalve mollusc, commercially exploited throughout Europe and is also an important food source for birds and crustaceans. Recently, mass surfacing and mortalities of cockles have been observed and reported at sites in Ireland and elsewhere, particularly in the summer months. One such site is Flaxfort Strand, Courtmacsherry Bay, County Cork, Ireland, an important feeding area used by many seabirds during the summer months. For the past few years large numbers of surfaced cockles have been observed at the site in a moribund condition. Samples of cockles from this area were collected over the summer months and their health status assessed. Cockles that had surfaced (moribund) and those still buried in the sediment were quantified and screened: sex, gonadal maturity and size class of cockles were also determined. Disseminated neoplasia and trematodes were observed in screened cockles. The most significant finding during the study was that mortalities and surfacing of cockles was related to a greater incidence of disseminated neoplasia. No neoplasia was observed in the smallest and largest size classes. There was a significantly higher prevalence of neoplasia in moribund cockles than in buried cockles, whereas in both groups a similar concentration of trematode metacercariae was observed in the screened tissues. Also, most of the cockles that had surfaced were either in the process of spawning or were spent. Overall a much larger percentage of moribund cockles exhibited both trematode infections plus neoplasia compared with buried cockles. A combination of the presence of neoplasia and trematodes, along with stress related to spawning, may immunocompromise the cockless, causing the animals to surface and become moribund.  相似文献

The intertidal cockle Austrovenus stutchburyi exists in a symbiotic relationship with the mud flat anemone Anthopleura aureoradiata, the latter using the shell of buried cockles as the only available hard substrate for attachment. The cockles are also host to a detrimental larval trematode Curtuteria australis that invades the bivalves through the filtration current, and here we demonstrate that the anemones significantly depress the rate by which cockles accumulate parasites in the field. Along the tidal gradient, the relative parasite load of cockles was lowest where anemones were most abundant, and the area occupied by anemones per square meter sediment surface explained 30% of the spatial variation in infection intensity. At a smaller spatial scale, parasite loads were significantly lower (34%) in cockles from patches with than without anemones at the same tidal height. A field experiment manipulating the density of anemones showed that the rate of parasite accumulation in cockles decreased with increasing anemone density, and that the generally positive relationship between infection intensity and cockle size tended to disappear in the presence of anemones. The results suggest that the anemone-cockle symbiosis is a non-obligate mutualistic relationship in which the former is provided with a suitable substrate for attachment whereas the latter obtains protection against parasitic infections.  相似文献

Physiological parameters associated with burying were investigated in the Dungeness crab, Cancer magister, and the red rock crab, Cancer productus. Ventilation frequency of the branchial chambers increased while the crabs were burying, this was associated with the greater oxygen demand of the tissues. The number of ventilatory reversals in C. magister increased in number as well as in duration and magnitude when the crabs were buried, which functioned to clear the branchial chambers of sediment. In contrast, the number of ventilatory reversals in C. productus decreased. On the surface of the sand, cardiac parameters (heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output) of both species remained stable. During the burial process, there was a large increase in cardiac output which was afforded primarily by an increased stroke volume of the heart. Once buried, cardiac output declined in both species; this was due to a decrease in stroke volume in C. productus, but a decreased heart rate in C. magister. There were also differences in haemolymph flows through each arterial system. During the burying process, both species increased haemolymph flow to the muscles of the limbs via the sternal artery. Once buried haemolymph flows to the limbs decreased, and increased flow to eyestalks and antennae via the anterior aorta occurred. Perfusion of the digestive organs via the anterolateral and hepatic arteries did not change when the crabs were buried. There was an increase in flow through the posterior aorta, of C. magister, but flow through this artery did not change in C. productus. Periods of spontaneous cardiac arrest were observed in both species while resting on the surface. These increased in duration in C. productus when buried, but there was no change in C. magister. Changes in ventilatory and cardiac variables were closely linked on the surface, but tended to uncouple when the animals were buried. The physiological responses of C. magister resembled those of true sand-dwelling crabs, whereas the responses of C. productus paralleled those of crabs that only bury occasionally in the substrate. Although these two species often occur sympatrically, they employ different physiological mechanisms when buried in the sediment.  相似文献

The freshwater mussel Anodonta cygnea and four marine shellfish (mussels, Mytilus edulis; cockles, Cerastoderma edule; clams, Mya arenaria; Scrobicularia plana) from a total of six sites were surveyed for Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, faecal streptococci, 25 and 37 °C coliforms, 25 °C and 37 °C total viable numbers and fluorescent pseudomonads. The A. cygnea from an urban lake contained greater numbers of the faecal indicator bacteria than animals from a rural lake. There were also differences in the other bacterial counts and these were discussed with respect to bacterial parameter and animal characteristics. When freshwater mussels were transferred from the city site to the rural site for 24 h the load of faecal indicator bacteria was eliminated or significantly reduced. Other bacterial types took longer to become stabilised. Loss of indicator bacteria from Anodonta was also demonstrated using cleansing in the laboratory. Very high bacterial numbers were found in some marine molluscs notably Scrobicularia plana and most shellfish contained significant numbers of the three faecal indicator bacteria at every sampling occasion. The relationship between bacterial types was discussed and it was concluded that in both freshwater and marine animals the bacterial numbers were determined more by sampling site than by species of shellfish.  相似文献

In late summer 2004, a conspicuous cockle (Cerastoderma edule) mortality event was observed on a tidal flat in the northern Wadden Sea (North Sea, Germany) with many fresh valves and still living cockles lying on the sediment surface. To investigate whether trematode parasites utilizing the cockle as first or second intermediate host were involved in this mortality, buried and surfaced cockles were sampled and analyzed, and a laboratory experiment conducted. The field survey showed no statistical difference in intensity of parasites encysted in the foot of cockles. Three species of Himasthla utilizing the cockle as second intermediate host and known to impair the cockle’s burrowing ability were found in buried cockles with 148.4±111.1 metacercariae/foot and in surfaced cockles with 164.2±84.4. There was also no difference in infection levels of parasites utilizing the cockles as second intermediate host in other cockle tissues between buried and surfaced cockles. In contrast, surfaced cockles showed a ten times higher prevalence (71.0%) than buried cockles (7.4%) of the trematode Gymnophallus choledochus – a parasite utilizing the cockle as first (and second) intermediate host – filling almost the entire body cavity and eliminating gonad structures. In an aquarium experiment of 14 days, all cockles found buried on the tidal flat survived compared to only 23.3% found on the surface. This suggests G. choledochus to be a castrating agent and a serious mortality factor in adult cockle populations.  相似文献

Cryoturbation, the burial of topsoil material into deeper soil horizons by repeated freeze–thaw events, is an important storage mechanism for soil organic matter (SOM) in permafrost-affected soils. Besides abiotic conditions, microbial community structure and the accessibility of SOM to the decomposer community are hypothesized to control SOM decomposition and thus have a crucial role in SOM accumulation in buried soils. We surveyed the microbial community structure in cryoturbated soils from nine soil profiles in the northeastern Siberian tundra using high-throughput sequencing and quantification of bacterial, archaeal and fungal marker genes. We found that bacterial abundances in buried topsoils were as high as in unburied topsoils. In contrast, fungal abundances decreased with depth and were significantly lower in buried than in unburied topsoils resulting in remarkably low fungal to bacterial ratios in buried topsoils. Fungal community profiling revealed an associated decrease in presumably ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi. The abiotic conditions (low to subzero temperatures, anoxia) and the reduced abundance of fungi likely provide a niche for bacterial, facultative anaerobic decomposers of SOM such as members of the Actinobacteria, which were found in significantly higher relative abundances in buried than in unburied topsoils. Our study expands the knowledge on the microbial community structure in soils of Northern latitude permafrost regions, and attributes the delayed decomposition of SOM in buried soils to specific microbial taxa, and particularly to a decrease in abundance and activity of ECM fungi, and to the extent to which bacterial decomposers are able to act as their functional substitutes.  相似文献

Eurydice pulchra Leach freshly collected at neap and spring tides exhibits an endogenous circatidal rhythm of swimming when kept without sand in constant conditions in laboratory aquaria. When provided with sand in the laboratory, tidally-phased swimming may occur spontaneously at some times of the lunar month, predominantly after the times of highest spring tides but not at neaps. In these cases, therefore, there appears to be clearly demonstrated for the first time in a marine animal a circasemilunar pattern of emergence from the substratum which is coupled to a circatidal rhythm of swimming; the isopods in the laboratory emerge from the sediment only when the swimming rhythm and emergence rhythm are at their maxima. In the field at neap tides some isopods emerge to swim at high tide, dependent upon their responses to water agitation, their feeding state and responses to light. At and just after spring tides in the field large numbers of the isopods swim at high tide, triggered by the endogenous circasemilunar rhythm of emergence which in the field is probably cued by the effects of increased water agitation. The main function of the endogenous circatidal rhythm of swimming appears to be to permit the isopods to return to their preferred zone in the sand before the fall of the tide. The coupled circasemilunar rhythm of emergence which induces greater swimming at spring tides reduces the risk of animals being stranded high on the shore during neap tides.  相似文献

An intense colored marine bacterium, identified as Cellulophaga lytica, was isolated previously from a sea anemone surface on the Charente-Maritime rocky shore (Atlantic Coast, France), and iridescence of its colonies under direct light was recently described. In addition, iridescence intensities were found to differ strongly between C. lytica strains from different culture collections. However, importantly, the occurrence and distribution of iridescent bacteria in the marine environment were still unknown. Therefore, in this study, a search was undertaken for marine iridescent bacterial strains in different biotopes of the Charente-Maritime coast. Various marine samples (water, sediment, macroalgae, other macroorganisms and detritus) were collected from seven biotopes using a direct plate inoculation method. As a result, 34 iridescent strains related to the genus Cellulophaga, as well as 63 iridescent strains affiliated to the genera Tenacibaculum and Aquimarina, were isolated. Iridescent colors were different according to the genera but iridescent marine bacteria were widely distributed. However, a majority of strains were isolated from rocky shores and, in particular, red seaweed surfaces and mollusks. The data from the study suggested that isolates with iridescent properties were well conserved in stressful environments such as the coastal shoreline. This origin may provide an insight into the ecological and biological functions of iridescence.  相似文献

The interior of 36 specimens of Pholadomya Sowerby (Bivalvia) from the Middle Jurassic of Poland reveals the presence of unusual septa that separate sediment‐filled chambers from the shell interior. The septa occupy one or several recurrent loci in shells of various individuals, that is within umbones, in pallial sinuses and along the shell margins. Based on the location and shape of the septa, eight forms grouped into types and varieties are identified. A possible cause for the formation of septa is sediment toxicity, but intrusion of sediment to the shell interior must have been linked to shell breakage or rupture of the free periostracum. One form of septa occurs in perforated umbones, common in Pholadomya; other forms occur in intact shells, which suggest damage to free periostracum. The most likely cause for the latter is the presence of parasites, especially digenean trematodes, for which clams were intermediate hosts. The morphological aberrations presented here were hitherto unknown in both fossil and extant bivalves. This study is also the first report of pathologies in Anomalodesmata.

Myxobacteria are common in terrestrial habitats and well known for their formation of fruiting bodies and production of secondary metabolites. We studied a cluster of myxobacteria consisting only of sequences of marine origin (marine myxobacteria cluster, MMC) in sediments of the North Sea. Using a specific PCR, MMC sequences were detected in North Sea sediments down to 2.2 m depth, but not in the limnetic section of the Weser estuary and other freshwater habitats. In the water column, this cluster was only detected on aggregates up to a few meters above the sediment surface, but never in the fraction of free-living bacteria. A quantitative real-time PCR approach revealed that the MMC constituted up to 13% of total bacterial 16S rRNA genes in surface sediments of the North Sea. In a global survey, including sediments from the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean and various climatic regions, the MMC was detected in most samples and to a water depth of 4300 m. Two fosmids of a library from sediment of the southern North Sea containing 16S rRNA genes affiliated with the MMC were sequenced. Both fosmids have a single unlinked 16S rRNA gene and no complete rRNA operon as found in most bacteria. No synteny to other myxobacterial genomes was found. The highest numbers of orthologues for both fosmids were assigned to Sorangium cellulosum and Haliangium ochraceum. Our results show that the MMC is an important and widely distributed but largely unknown component of marine sediment-associated bacterial communities.  相似文献

The complex life cycle of digenean trematodes with alternating stages of asexual multiplication and sexual reproduction can generate interesting within-host population genetic patterns. Metacercarial stages found in the second intermediate host are generally accumulated from the environment. Highly mobile second intermediate hosts can sample a broad range of cercarial genotypes and accumulate genetically diverse packets of metacercariae, but it is unclear whether the same would occur in systems where the second intermediate host is relatively immobile and cercarial dispersal is the sole mechanism that can maintain genetic homogeneity at the population level. Here, using polymorphic microsatellite markers, we addressed this issue by genotyping metacercariae of the trematode Gymnophallus sp. from the New Zealand cockle Austrovenus stutchburyi. Despite the relatively sessile nature of the second intermediate host of Gymnophallus, very high genotypic diversity of metacercariae was found within cockles, with only two cockles harbouring multiple copies of a single clonal lineage. There was no evidence of population structuring at the scale of our study, suggesting the existence of a well-mixed population. Our results indicate that (i) even relatively sessile second intermediate hosts can accumulate a high diversity of genotypes and (ii) the dispersal ability of cercariae, whether passive or not, is much greater than expected for such small and short-lived organisms. The results also support the role of the second intermediate host as an accumulator of genetic diversity in the trematode life cycle.  相似文献

Most of the macroinfauna from sandy beaches is highly mobile, emerging out of the sediment when the tide rises, and using the swash to migrate up and down the beach face or feed (searching for prey or carrion). After swash excursions, they usually burrow back into the sediment, maintaining zonation at low tide. Therefore, the different species abilities to emerge, move around and burrow under different swash climates and sediment conditions are expected to influence observed distribution patterns. Nonetheless, few attempts have been made to understand behavioral mechanisms of these organisms in moving fluids. In this study, we used a flume tunnel to investigate the orientation, swimming ability and burrowing time of two similar species of cirolanid isopods, Excirolana armata Dana and Excirolana braziliensis Richardson, under current velocities ranging from 5 to 30 cm·s−1. E. armata inhabits middle levels of dissipative to intermediate beaches, while E. braziliensis is found towards the upper level of a wider range of beach states. Both species oriented countercurrent above a threshold velocity, which turned out to be significantly lower for E. armata than for E. braziliensis. E. armata proved to be a stronger swimmer as shown by the higher velocities surmounted, and the less drags experienced at the highest current velocity. E. armata also burrowed faster than E. braziliensis. Burrowing time was affected by sediment grain size and water content, but not by water flow. Once organisms managed to begin burrowing under different flow conditions, they were not affected by current velocity. Nonsaturated sand precluded burial, while coarse sand retarded it. Differences in the observed patterns of across-beach distribution may thus be the result of species-specific behavioral responses to swash climate, manifested in swimming ability, burying and orientation in directional flows.  相似文献

The importance of positive effects of ecosystem engineers on associated communities is predicted to increase with environmental stress. However, incorporating such non-trophic interactions into ecological theory is not trivial because facilitation of associated species is conditional on both the type of engineer and the type of abiotic stress. We tested the influence of two allogenic ecosystem engineers (lugworms, Arenicola marina L. and cockles, Cerastoderma edule L.) on the main primary producers (microphytobenthos) of the tidal flats, under different abiotic stresses controlled by reefs of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis L.). We added 25,000 cockles or 2,000 lugworms to 5 × 5 m plots, both in a muddy site with high sedimentation rates located coastward of a mussel bed, and in a sandy site without mussels and characterized by high hydrodynamic stress. After a year, cockles increased algal biomass in the sandy area, but not in the mussel bed site, where high values were measured in all plots. However, lugworms did not affect algal biomass in any of the sites. Field measurements suggest that cockles outweighed negative effects of water currents in the site without mussels by locally increasing sediment stability, whereas mussels overruled the effects of cockles in the wake of the reefs through hydrodynamic stress alleviation and/or biodeposition. Our results suggest that non-trophic interactions by ecosystem engineering bivalves control primary production of intertidal areas, and that the sediment-stabilizing effect of cockles plays a crucial role where the overruling effects of mussel beds are not present.  相似文献

Marine bivalves harbour a diversity of trematode parasites affecting population and community dynamics of their hosts. Although ecologically and economically important, factors influencing transmission between first (snail) and second (bivalve) intermediate hosts have rarely been studied in marine systems. In laboratory experiments, the effect of temperature (10, 15, 20, 25 degrees C) was investigated on (1) emergence from snails, (2) survival outside hosts and (3) infectivity in second intermediate hosts of cercariae of the trematode Renicola roscovita (Digenea: Renicolidae), a major parasite in North Sea bivalves. Emergence of cercariae peaked at 20 degrees C (2609 +/- 478 cercariae snail(-1) 120 h(-1)) and was considerably lower at 10 degrees C (80 +/- 79), 15 degrees C (747 +/- 384) and 25 degrees C (1141 +/- 334). Survival time decreased with increasing temperature, resulting in 50% mortality of the cercariae after 32.8 +/- 0.6 h (10 degrees C), 26.8 +/- 0.8 h (15 degrees C), 20.2 +/- 0.5 h (20 degrees C) and 16.6 +/- 0.3 h (25 degrees C ). Infectivity of R. roscovita cercariae in cockles Cerastoderma edule increased with increasing temperature and was highest at 25 degrees C (42.6 +/- 3.9%). However, mesocosm experiments with infected snails and cockle hosts in small aquaria, integrating cercarial emergence, survival and infectivity, showed highest infection of cockles at 20 degrees C (415 +/- 115 metacercariae host(-1)), indicating 20 degrees C to be the optimum temperature for transmission of this species. A field experiment showed metacercariae of R. roscovita to appear in C. edule with rising water temperature in April; highest infection rates were in August, when the water temperature reached 20 degrees C. Since another trematode species (Himasthla elongata; Digenea: Echinostomatidae) occurring at the experimental site showed a similar temporal pattern, trematode transmission to second intermediate bivalve hosts may peak during especially warm (> or = 20 degrees C) summers in the variable climate regime of the North Sea.  相似文献

The fate of ingested eukaryotic photoautotrophic fatty acids during gut transit in the lugworm Arenicola marina (L.) and the influence of A. marina's faeces on the evolution of fatty acid distribution and bacterial community structure in superficial sediments were studied under laboratory conditions. Dead phytoplanktonic cells (food portions) were fed to individual A. marina and subsequently incubated, or allowed to directly incubate in the presence of fresh egesta or non-ingested sediment. Changes in fatty acid composition and genetic structure of bacterial communities during gut transit and/or incubation were monitored using gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry and a DNA fingerprint approach (RISA), respectively. Results, supported by principal component analyses, suggest that A. marina's feeding activity can directly and indirectly affect the lipid biomarker composition and the bacterial community structure of inhabited sediments. Faecal casts produced from food portions appeared qualitatively enriched in saturated fatty acids relative to (poly)unsaturated ones due, partly, to an increase of some bacterial fatty acids and to the preferential removal of some polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The incubation of food portions in the presence of fresh A. marina's egesta (designed to study the indirect impact of feeding by A. marina) induced a significant increase in the concentrations of C20 and C22 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), whereas these compounds almost disappeared following direct feeding and subsequent incubation, indicating that some dietary fatty acids may be more accessible to biodegradation following passage through the gut of A. marina. The aforementioned increase in PUFAs was attributed to a bacterial production during incubation, suggesting the presence of PUFA-producing bacteria in the fresh egesta of A. marina. Those bacteria were either enteric bacteria that were released with the egesta or ingested bacteria that have survived gut passage, as suggested by the variations of the bacterial community structure (i.e. RISA profiles) during incubation. The results suggest that aged faeces from A. marina might be, in some circumstances, of relatively high nutritional value to trophic levels which are unable to synthesize essential PUFAs de novo. The presence of PUFA-producing bacteria in guts of marine lugworms deserves further attention.  相似文献
