Five different mesophilic systems were evaluated in this study for the anaerobic treatment of food waste. Systems A and B were one stage methane with unsonicated and sonicated feeds, respectively, while, systems C and D were two-stage hydrogen and methane with unsonicated and sonicated feeds, respectively. System E comprised a novel sonicated biological hydrogen reactor (SBHR) followed by methane reactor. The results showed that sonication inside the reactor in the first stage (system E) showed superior results compared to all other systems. Overall VSS removal efficiencies of 67%, 59%, 51%, 44%, and 36% were achieved in systems E, D, C, B, and A, respectively. Volumetric hydrogen production rates of 4.8, 3.3, and 2.6 L H2/Lreactor d were achieved in the SBHR, CSTR with and without sonicated feed, respectively, while, methane production rates of 1.6, 2.1, 2.3, 2.6, and 3.2 L CH4/Lreactor d were achieved in systems A-E, respectively.  相似文献

The present study investigated a two-stage anaerobic hydrogen and methane process for increasing bioenergy production from organic wastes. A two-stage process with hydraulic retention time (HRT) 3 d for hydrogen reactor and 12 d for methane reactor, obtained 11% higher energy compared to a single-stage methanogenic process (HRT 15 d) under organic loading rate (OLR) 3 gVS/(L d). The two-stage process was still stable when the OLR was increased to 4.5 gVS/(L d), while the single-stage process failed. The study further revealed that by changing the HRThydrogen:HRTmethane ratio of the two-stage process from 3:12 to 1:14, 6.7%, more energy could be obtained. Microbial community analysis indicated that the dominant bacterial species were different in the hydrogen reactors (Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum-like species) and methane reactors (Clostridiumthermocellum-like species). The changes of substrates and HRT did not change the dominant species. The archaeal community structures in methane reactors were similar both in single- and two- stage reactors, with acetoclastic methanogens Methanosarcina acetivorans-like organisms as the dominant species.  相似文献

In this study, a series of tests were conducted in a 6 L anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) to investigate the effect of pH, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate on biohydrogen production at 28 °C. Sucrose was used as the main substrate to mimic carbohydrate-rich wastewater and inoculum was prepared from anaerobic digested sludge without pretreatment. The reactor was operated initially with nitrogen sparging to form anaerobic condition. Results showed that methanogens were effectively suppressed. The optimum pH value would vary depending on the HRT. Maximum hydrogen production rate and yield of 3.04 L H2/L reactor d and 2.16 mol H2/mol hexose respectively were achieved at pH 4.5, HRT 30 h, and OLR 11.0 kg/m3 d. Two relationships involving the propionic acid/acetic acid ratio and ethanol/acetic acid ratio were derived from the analysis of the metabolites of fermentation. Ethanol/acetic acid ratio of 1.25 was found to be a threshold value for higher hydrogen production.  相似文献

This study evaluates a two-stage bioprocess for recovering bioenergy in the forms of hydrogen and methane while treating organic residues of ethanol fermentation from tapioca starch. A maximum hydrogen production rate of 0.77 mmol H2/g VSS/h can be achieved at volumetric loading rate (VLR) of 56 kg COD/m3/day. Batch results indicate that controlling conditions at S0/X0 = 12 with X0 = 4000 mg VSS/L and pH 5.5-6 are important for efficient hydrogen production from fermentation residues. Hydrogen-producing bacteria enriched in the hydrogen bioreactor are likely utilizing lactate and acetate for biohydrogen production from ethanol-fermentation residues. Organic residues remained in the effluent of hydrogen bioreactor can be effectively converted to methane with a rate of 0.37 mmol CH4/g VSS/h at VLR of 8 kg COD/m3/day. Approximately 90% of COD in ethanol-fermentation residues can be removed and among that 2% and 85.1% of COD can be recovered in the forms of hydrogen and methane, respectively.  相似文献

The present study focused on the anaerobic biohydrogen production from olive pulp (two phase olive mill wastes, TPOMW) and the subsequent anaerobic treatment of the effluent for methane production under mesophilic conditions in a two-stage process. Biohydrogen production from water-diluted (1:4) olive pulp was investigated at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 30 h, 14.5 h and 7.5 h while methane production from the effluent of hydrogenogenic reactor was studied at 20 d, 15 d, 10 d and 5 d HRT. In comparison with previous studies, it has been shown that the thermophilic hydrogen production process was more efficient than the mesophilic one in both hydrogen production rate and yield. The methanogenic reactor was successfully operated at 20, 15 and 10 days HRT while it failed when an HRT of 5 days was applied. Methane productivity reached the maximum value of 1.13 ± 0.08 L/L/d at 10 days HRT whereas the methane yield increased with the HRT. The Anaerobic Digestion Model no. 1 (ADM1) was applied to the obtained experimental data from the methanogenic reactor to simulate the digester response at all HRT tested. The ability of the model to predict the experimental results was evident even in the case of the process failure, thus implying that the ADM1 could be a valuable tool for process design even in the case of a complex feedstock. In general, the two-stage anaerobic digestion proved to be a stable, reliable and effective process for energy recovery and stabilization treatment of olive pulp.  相似文献

The two-stage process for extreme thermophilic hydrogen and thermophilic methane production from wheat straw hydrolysate was investigated in up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors. Specific hydrogen and methane yields of 89 ml-H2/g-VS (190 ml-H2/g-sugars) and 307 ml-CH4/g-VS, respectively were achieved simultaneously with the overall VS removal efficiency of 81% by operating with total hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 days . The energy conversion efficiency was dramatically increased from only 7.5% in the hydrogen stage to 87.5% of the potential energy from hydrolysate, corresponding to total energy of 13.4 kJ/g-VS. Dominant hydrogen-producing bacteria in the H2-UASB reactor were Thermoanaerobacter wiegelii, Caldanaerobacter subteraneus, and Caloramator fervidus. Meanwhile, the CH4-UASB reactor was dominated with methanogens of Methanosarcina mazei and Methanothermobacter defluvii. The results from this study suggest the two stage anaerobic process can be effectively used for energy recovery and for stabilization of hydrolysate at anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

The effects of crude glycerol on the performance of single-stage anaerobic reactors treating different types of organic waste were examined. A reactor treating the organic fraction of municipal solid waste produced 1400 mL CH4/d before the addition of glycerol and 2094 mL CH4/d after the addition of glycerol. An enhanced methane production rate was also observed when a 1:4 mixture of olive mill wastewater and slaughterhouse wastewater was supplemented with crude glycerol. Specifically, by adding 1% v/v crude glycerol to the feed, the methane production rate increased from 479 mL/d to 1210 mL/d. The extra glycerol-COD added to the feed did not have a negative effect on the reactor performance in either case. Supplementation of the feed with crude glycerol also had a significant positive effect on anaerobic fermentation reactors. Hydrogen yield was 26 mmole H2/g VS added and 15 mmole H2/g VS added in a reactor treating the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and a 1:4 mixture of olive mill and slaughterhouse wastewater. The addition of crude glycerol to the feed enhanced hydrogen yield at 2.9 mmole H2/g glycerol added and 0.7 mmole H2/g glycerol added.  相似文献

A thermophilic anaerobic bacterium Clostridium sp. TCW1 was isolated from dairy cow dung and was used to produce hydrogen from cellulosic feedstock. Extracellular cellulolytic enzymes produced from TCW1 strain were identified as endoglucanases (45, 53 and 70 kDa), exoglucanase (70 kDa), xylanases (53 and 60 kDa), and β-glucosidase (45 kDa). The endoglucanase and xylanase were more abundant. The optimal conditions for H2 production and enzyme production of the TCW1 strain were the same (60 °C, initial pH 7, agitation rate of 200 rpm). Ten cellulosic feedstock, including pure or natural cellulosic materials, were used as feedstock for hydrogen production by Clostridium strain TCW1 under optimal culture conditions. Using filter paper at 5.0 g/L resulted in the most effective hydrogen production performance, achieving a H2 production rate and yield of 57.7 ml/h/L and 2.03 mol H2/mol hexose, respectively. Production of cellulolytic enzyme activities was positively correlated with the efficiency of dark-H2 fermentation.  相似文献

Assessing contemporary anaerobic biotechnologies requires proofs on reliable performance in terms of renewable bioenergy recovery such as methane (CH4) production rate, CH4 yield while removing volatile solid (VS) effectively. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate temperature-phased anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (TPASBR) system that is a promising approach for the sustainable treatment of organic fraction of municipal solid wastes (OFMSW). TPASBR system is compared with a conventional system, mesophilic two-stage anaerobic sequencing batch reactor system, which differs in operating temperature of 1st-stage. Results demonstrate that TPASBR system can obtain 44% VS removal from co-substrate of sewage sludge and food waste while producing 1.2 m3CH4/m3system/d (0.2 m3CH4/kgVSadded) at organic loading rate of 6.1 gVS/L/d through the synergy of sequencing-batch operation, co-digestion, and temperature-phasing. Consequently, the rapid and balanced anaerobic metabolism at thermophilic stage makes TPASBR system to afford high organic loading rate showing superior performance on OFMSW stabilization.  相似文献

Biohydrogen fermentation using liquid swine manure as substrate supplemented with glucose was investigated in this project. Experiments were conducted using a semi-continuously-fed fermenter (8 L in total volume and 4 L in working volume) with varying pHs from 4.7 through 5.9 under controlled temperature (35 ± 1 °C). The hydraulic retention time (HRT) tested include 16, 20, and 24 h; however, in two pH conditions (5.0 and 5.3), an additional HRT of 12 h was also tried. The experimental design combining HRT and pH provided insight on the fermenter performance in terms of hydrogen generation. The results indicated that both HRT and pH had profound influences on fermentative hydrogen productivity. A rising HRT would lead to greater variation in hydrogen concentration in the offgas and the best HRT was found to be 16 h for the fermenter in this study. The best pH value in correspondence to the highest hydrogen generation was revealed to be 5.0 among all the pHs studied. There was no obvious inhibition on hydrogen production by methanogenesis when methane content in the offgas was lower than 2%. Otherwise, an inverse linear relationship between hydrogen and methane content was observed with a correlation coefficient of 0.9699. Therefore, to increase hydrogen content in the offgas, methane production has to be limited to below 2%.  相似文献

Anaerobic fermentation for hydrogen (H2) production was studied in a two-stage fermentation system fed with different ripened fruit feedstocks (apple, pear, and grape). Among the feedstocks, ripened apple was the most efficient substrate for cumulative H2 production (4463.7 mL-H2 L−1-culture) with a maximum H2 yield (2.2 mol H2 mol−1 glucose) in the first stage at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 18 h. The additional cumulative biohydrogen (3337.4 mL-H2 L−1-culture) was produced in the second stage with the reused residual substrate from the first stage. The major byproducts in this study were butyrate, acetate, and ethanol, and butyrate was dominant among them in all test runs. During the two-stage system, the energy efficiency (H2 conversion) obtained from mixed ripened fruits (RF) increased from 4.6% (in the first stage) to 15.5% (in the second stage), which indicated the energy efficiency can be improved by combined hydrogen production process. The RF could be used as substrates for biohydrogen fermentation in a two-stage (dark/dark) fermentation system.  相似文献

Ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer was used to immobilize H2-producing sewage sludge for H2 production in a three-phase fluidized bed reactor (FBR). The FBR with an immobilized cell packing ratio of 10% (v/v) and a liquid recycle rate of 5 l/min (23% bed expansion) was optimal for dark H2 fermentation. The performance of the FBR reactor fed with sucrose-based synthetic medium was examined under various sucrose concentration (Cso) and hydraulic retention time (HRT). The best volumetric H2 production rate of 1.80 ± 0.02 H2 l/h/l occurred at Cso = 40 g COD/l and 2 h HRT, while the optimal H2 yield (4.26 ± 0.04 mol H2/mol sucrose) was obtained at Cso = 20 g COD/l and 6 h HRT. The H2 content in the biogas was stably maintained at 40% or above. The primary soluble metabolites were butyric acid and acetic acid, as both products together accounted for 74–83% of total soluble microbial products formed during dark H2 fermentation.  相似文献

The effects of hematite nanoparticles concentration (0-1600 mg/L) and initial pH (4.0-10.0) on hydrogen production were investigated in batch assays using sucrose-fed anaerobic mixed bacteria at 35 °C. The optimum hematite nanoparticles concentration with an initial pH 8.48 was 200 mg/L, with the maximum hydrogen yield of 3.21 mol H2/mol sucrose which was 32.64% higher than the blank test. At 200 mg/L hematite nanoparticles concentration, further initial pH optimization experiments indicated that at pH 6.0 the maximum hydrogen yield reached to 3.57 mol H2/mol sucrose and hydrogen content was 66.1%. The slow release of hematite nanoparticles had been recorded by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, TEM analysis indicated that the hematite nanoparticles can affect the shape of bacteria, namely, its length increased from ca. 2.0-3.6 μm to ca. 2.6-5.6 μm, and width became narrower.  相似文献

Hydrogen production by dark fermentation may suffer of inhibition or instability due to pH deviations from optimality. The co-fermentation of promptly degradable feedstock with alkali-rich materials, such as livestock wastes, may represent a feasible and easy to implement approach to avoid external adjustments of pH.Experiments were designed to investigate the effect of the mixing ratio of fruit-vegetable waste with swine manure with the aim of maximizing biohydrogen production while obtaining process stability through the endogenous alkalinity of manure.Fruit-vegetable/swine manure ratio of 35/65 and HRT of 2 d resulted to give the highest production rate of 3.27 ± 0.51 LH2 L−1 d−1, with a corresponding hydrogen yield of 126 ± 22 mLH2 g−1VS-added and H2 content in the biogas of 42 ± 5%. At these operating conditions the process exhibited also one of the highest measured stability, with daily productions deviating for less than 14% from the average.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of whole stillage from a dry-grind corn-based ethanol plant was evaluated by batch and continuous-flow digesters under thermophilic and mesophilic conditions. At whole corn stillage concentrations of 6348 to 50,786 mg total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD)/L, at standard temperature (0 °C) and pressure (1 atm), preliminary biochemical methane potential assays produced 88 ± 8 L (49 ± 5 L CH4) and 96 ± 19 L (65 ± 14 L CH4) biogas per L stillage from mesophilic and thermophilic digesters, respectively. Continuous-flow studies for the full-strength stillage (TCOD = 254 g/L) at organic loadings of 4.25, 6.30 and 9.05 g TCOD/L days indicated unstable performance for the thermophilic digester. Among the sludge retention times (SRTs) of 60, 45 and 30 days tested, the mesophilic digestion was successful only at 60 days-SRT which does not represent a practical operation time for a large scale bioethanol plant. Future laboratory studies will focus on different reactor configurations to reduce the SRT needed in the digesters.  相似文献

A two-step anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR-1 and ABR-2) for H2 production from municipal food waste (MFW) was investigated at a temperature of 26 °C. In ABR-1, the average yield of H2 at an HRT of 26 h and OLR of 58 kg COD/m3 d was 250 ml H2/g VS removed. As unexpected; the H2 production in the ABR-2 was further increased up to 370 ml H2/gVS removed at a HRT of 26 h and OLR of 35 kgCOD/m3 d. The total H2 yield in the two-step process was estimated to be 4.9 mol H2/mol hexose. The major part of H2 production in the ABR-1 was due to the conversion of CODparticulate (36%). In the ABR-2 the H2 yield was mainly due to the conversion of COD in the soluble form (76%). Based on these results MFW could be ideal substrate for H2 production in a two-step ABR processes.  相似文献

The optimization of a two-phase thermophilic anaerobic process treating biowaste for hydrogen and methane production was carried out at pilot scale using two stirred reactors (CSTRs) and without any physical/chemical pre-treatment of inoculum. During the experiment the hydrogen production at low hydraulic retention time (3d) was tested, both with and without reject water recirculation and at two organic loading rate (16 and 21 kgTVS/m3d). The better yields were obtained with recirculation where the pH reached an optimal value (5.5) thanks to the buffering capacity of the recycle stream. The specific gas production of the first reactor was 51 l/kgVSfed and H2 content in biogas 37%. The mixture of gas obtained from the two reactors met the standards for the biohythane mix only when lower loading rate were applied to the first reactor, with a composition of 6.7% H2, 40.1% CO2 and 52.3% CH4 the overall SGP being 0.78 m3/kgVSfed.  相似文献

Anaerobic granular sludge bed (AnGSB) bioreactors were supplemented with activated carbon carriers and combined with distributors (e.g., acrylic resin board, stainless steel net and plastic net) installed at different locations to investigate the effect of distributor/carrier on biohydrogen production efficiency. The results show that plastic net stimulated the substrate/microorganisms contact and sludge granulation, thereby leading to a much better H2 production performance when compared with those obtained from traditional CSTR. The highest H2 production rate (7.89 L/h/L) and yield (3.42 mol H2/mol sucrose) were obtained when two pieces of plastic nets were installed at both 4 cm and 16 cm from the bottom of AnGSB without carrier addition and the bioreactor was operated at a HRT of 0.5 h. For the AnGSB installed with two pieces of plastic net distributors, addition of carriers led to significant improvement on the H2 production efficiency at a longer HRT (1–4 h) when compared with the carrier-absent system.  相似文献

A batch test and continuous operation were performed to identify the effect of lactate on hydrogen production at pH 4.5. When the initial lactic acid concentration was increased from 0 to 8 g/L in the batch test, the hydrogen yield also increased from 1.41 to 1.72 mol-H2/mol-glucose. The system exhibited a long lag time and an insignificant hydrogen yield with 16 g-lactic acid/L. A continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) was operated at different organic loading rates (OLRs: 10, 15, 20 and 40 g/L/day) and hydraulic retention times (HRTs: 6, 12 and 24 h). At an OLR of 20 g-glucose/L/day and 12 h of HRT, the hydrogen yield was 1.2 mol-H2/mol-glucose. The yield decreased with a 24 h HRT. Even though lactate was one of the major constituents of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), hydrogen production was feasible throughout the operation. Clostridium sp. was the dominant hydrogen-producing bacteria in the system.  相似文献

In this study, a lab-scale serial photobioreactor composed of three column reactors was constructed and continuously operated to investigate several parameters influencing photohydrogen production when using the synthetic wastewater and the anaerobic hydrogen fermentation effluents as the influents. The results indicated that better hydrogen production rate was obtained when the serial photobioreactor was operated under cellular recycling at a short HRT of 8 h. The serial photobioreactor maintained high hydrogen content ca. 80% in the produced gas and 0.4× dilution ratio was the suitable ratio for hydrogen production. When the photobioreactor fed with the real wastewater (Effluent 1) containing 100 mg/L NH4Cl, Column 1 reactor successfully reduced ammonia concentration to about 60 mg/L for cell synthesis, resulting in a steady hydrogen production in the following two column reactors. The average hydrogen production rate was 205 mL-H2/L/d.  相似文献
