An experiment with broiler chickens was conducted to study the effect of inclusion of blue lupins and exogenous enzyme to broiler diets on the apparent metabolisable energy (AME), digestibility and performance. Two basal diets were formulated: a non-lupin diet A based on soya bean meal and maize, and a diet B where parts of soya bean meal and maize were substituted with blue lupin (200 g/kg). The two basal diets were fed either alone or, for diet B in combination with different enzyme preparations (Bio-Feed Plus, lactase, two galactanases (Gal-I and Gal-II)). The experiment was performed in battery cages with 648 male broiler chickens, where eight experimental diets were fed to the chickens from 7 to 21 days of age and weight gain and feed intake were measured during the period. At the end of the experiment, three chickens from each pen were slaughtered and the content from jejunum and ileum was separately collected and pooled and used for measurement on intestinal viscosity. For measurements of the apparent metabolisable energy and the apparent digestibility, excreta were collected at 22–24 days of age and ileal contents collected at 25–26 days from the remaining chickens.

Substitution of soya bean meal and maize with blue lupin depressed weight gain (9%) and feed conversion ratio (12%) significantly. Feed intake of the lupin-based diets was not decreased. The protein in lupin was digested to the same extent as the protein from soya bean meal, the coefficient of ileal apparent digestibility being on average 0.75. However, the high content of the non-starch polysaccharides (NSP; 450 g/kg) in lupin depressed the apparent digestibility of the organic matter by approximately 10%. The AMEn of the non-lupin diet was 14.01 MJ/kg dry matter (DM) compared to a value of 13.11 MJ/kg DM in the lupin control diet. Improvements in the measured parameters were seen with some of the enzymes. Gal-I, and Gal-II in combination with lactase were the most efficient enzymes concerning improvement in AMEn and performance. Weight gain was increased by 3.5–5.5% by addition with these enzymes. Gal-I increased the AMEn significantly to 13.65 MJ/kg, a value not significantly different from the AMEn of the non-lupin diet. There was no effect of addition with the different enzymes on the coefficients of apparent digestibility of organic matter measured in the ileum, whereas addition with Gal-I to the lupin diet increased the apparent digestibility of organic matter over the total tract by 3%. The mode of action of the galactanases has been to hydrolyse the galactan in the NSP cell wall of lupins to galactose and dimers of galactose, which are energy-yielding to poultry. From the results obtained, it can be indicated that Gal-I increased the energy utilisation of the lupin-based diet, confirmed by the improved AMEn content and performance.  相似文献

Elucidating the mechanisms by which honey bees process pollen vs. protein supplements are important in the generation of artificial diets needed to sustain managed honeybees. We measured the effects of diet on protein concentration, hypopharyngeal gland development and virus titers in worker honey bees fed either pollen, a protein supplement (MegaBee), or a protein-free diet of sugar syrup. Workers consumed more pollen than protein supplement, but protein amounts and size of hypopharyngeal gland acini did not differ between the two feeding treatments. Bees fed sugar syrup alone had lower protein concentrations and smaller hypopharyngeal glands compared with the other feeding treatments especially as the bees aged. Deformed wing virus was detected in workers at the start of a trial. The virus concentrations increased as bees aged and were highest in those fed sugar syrup and lowest in bees fed pollen. Overall results suggest a connection between diet, protein levels and immune response and indicate that colony losses might be reduced by alleviating protein stress through supplemental feeding.  相似文献

Insecticidal properties of protease inhibitors have been established in transgenic plants. In the wake of continuous research and rapid development of protease inhibitors it is important to assess possible effects on beneficial insects like the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.). In this study, newly emerged caged bees were fed pollen diets containing three different concentrations (0.1%, 0.5% and 1% w:w) of soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI). Hypopharyngeal gland protein content, total midgut proteolytic enzyme activity of these bees, and survival were measured. Bees fed 1% SBTI had significantly reduced hypopharyngeal gland protein content and midgut proteolytic enzyme activity. There were no significant differences between control, 0.1% and 0.5% SBTI treatments. Bees fed a diet containing 1% SBTI had the lowest survival, followed by 0.5% and 0.1%, over a 30-day period. We concluded that nurse bees fed a pollen diet containing at least 1% SBTI would be poor producers of larval food, potentially threatening colony growth and maintenance.  相似文献

Newly emerged adult bees were fed with Nosema apis spores subjected to various treatments, and their longevity, proportions of bees infected, and spores per bee recorded. Spores lost viability after 1, 3, or 6 months in active manuka or multifloral honey, after 3 days in multifloral honey, and after 21 days in water or sugar syrup at 33 degrees C. Air-dried spores lost viability after 3 or 5 days at 40 degrees, 45 degrees, or 49 degrees C. Increasing numbers of bees became infected with increasing doses of spores, regardless of their subsequent food (active manuka honey, thyme honey, or sugar syrup). Final spore loads were similar among bees receiving the same food, regardless of dose. Bees fed with either honey had lighter infections than those fed with syrup, but this may have been due to reductions in their longevity. Bees fed with manuka honey were significantly shorter lived, whether infected or not.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Although pollen is a vital nutritional resource for honey bees, Apis mellifera , the influence of pollen quality on their foraging behaviour is little understood.
2. In choice-test experiments, bees showed no innate pollen-foraging preferences, but preferred oilseed rape Brassica napus pollen over field bean Vicia faba pollen after previous foraging experience of oilseed rape.
3. The free amino acid content of oilseed rape and field bean pollen was compared using high-performance liquid chromatography. Oilseed rape pollen contained a greater proportion of the most essential amino acids required by honey bees (valine, leucine, and isoleucine) than field bean, suggesting that oilseed rape pollen is of greater nutritional quality for honey bees than is field bean pollen.
4. Honey bee foraging preferences appeared to reflect pollen quality. The hypothesis that pollen amino acid composition affects the foraging behaviour of honey bees is discussed.  相似文献

Pollen collected by bees was sampled during a 3-h period once a week from April to October 1983 and analyzed for vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acid). The levels were highly variable and ranged from a low of 136 μg/g pollen (April) to a high of 1943 μg/g pollen (May). Overall, caged honeybees fed diets containing 1,000 and 2,000 μg/g L-ascorbic acid reared significantly more bees to the sealed stage than bees fed diets with 500 μg/g ascorbic acid or control bees. The levels of vitamin C in prepupae reared by bees ranged from 64.5 to 103.5 μg/g body mass. Vitamin C is either synthesized from simple precursors or from symbiotic microorganisms in the gut since honeybees fed the ascorbic acid-free control had equivalent levels of ascorbic acid to those fed the enriched diets. The total diet consumption by bees during the 10-week study showed that the four diets were equally attractive.  相似文献

The present research work was conducted to assess the impact of nutrient-enriched diet on the physiological activities and subsequently honey yield. Eighteen colonies of Apis mellifera L. were selected from Dera Ismail Khan region, KPK, Pakistan, during the winter and summer seasons, 2019–2020. Five pollen supplement diets were prepared and provided to screen out the palatable one to be fed as pollen alternative nutrition to bee bread. Results of diet consumption regarding mean data for consumption rate displayed that soybean flour enriched artificial diet was maximally consumed (74.34 g) by honey bees per week. Minimum consumption was observed for grinded groundnut enriched diet (64.62 g) which was relatively lesser than the other tested artificial diets. Results of area of worker brood disclosed that soybean flour fortified diet (1489.27 cm2/colony) statistically noteworthy than the other artificial diets whereas control (463.51 cm2/colony) was least effective. Highest bee strength (10.00 bee frames/colony) was noted in the bee colonies fed with soybean flour fortified diet, date paste (8.0 bee frames/colony) was the next effective one, among the tested pollen replacement diets whereas relatively least (5 bee frames/colony) was noticed in case of grinded groundnut. Highest body weight (12.41 g) of neonate bees was noted in case of soybean enriched diet while lowermost (5.31 g) was noted in control bees. Results of wax cell built up and foraging efficiency were also superior in artificial diets than respective control bees. Hence, artificial diets especially soybean-enriched pollen alternative diet can boost up the physiology of honey bee leading to increased honey yield and profit.  相似文献

Summary In two consecutive years heavy bee mortality at end April/early May followed the use of pesticides classed as harmless for bees along road verges. It was thought that old weak winter bees had succumbed to a preparation otherwise innocuous. Extensive tests to reveal any links between the bees' physiological condition and pesticide sensitivity involved 6 hormone herbicides, 11 fungicides and 2 insecticides, all approved harmless for bees and functioning on them wholly or mainly as stomach poisons. As a rule bee sensitivity was measured as LD 50 per os, in smaller tests as percentage mortality. Amount and quality of pollen ingested in the first days of life affected the pesticide sensitivity of young and older bees. Bees fed adequate high quality pollen are less sensitive than counterparts fed inadequate or inferior pollen or pollen substitute; such differences persisted if the LD 50 was calculated for the same body weight. Pesticides containing manganese are an exception. To these, bees fed inadequate pollen are no more or even less sensitive than comparable well-fed bees. Pesticide sensitivity decreases generally from early to late summer. Quality of pollen available for larvae has no effect on poison sensitivity of imagines. Food supply conditions however exert a clear influence: tested with the same pesticides, hive bees from colonies having had a rich early food supply, and young bees bred then, are less sensitive than their counterparts having had moderate or no early food supply. Poison sensitivity of summer bees increases with age; most sensitive are old winter bees which had practiced broodcare in early spring.Inadequate pollen intake can be regarded as causing protein deficiency. Investigation of this in mammals and man indicate that the higher poison sensitivity in bees results from inhibition of the enzymatic decomposition of pesticides. For practical bee protection it is important that all organic fungicides tested are effectively harmless. Hormone hebicides can be ranked as practically harmless even for bees inadequately protein-fed, as long as the approved concentrations are observed. Our tests raised doubts however about the registration as harmless for bees of insecticides based on Endosulfan and Phosalon. Of interest in practice and for the official testing of pesticides are also the high pesticide sensitivity of old winter bees, the decrease in sensitivity of bees on a stable feed from early to late summer, and the sensitivity-reducing influence of pollen-rich food supply promoting development.It is important ecologically that pollens of different plant species vary in nutrient quality for the honey bee: there are perfectly worthless (conifers), poor-to-medium, and highly effective pollen types. As shown in this paper, these differences are relevant not only for the development of the physiological condition and breeding potential of the bee, but also for pesticide sensitivity. That bees gather worthless and poor-quality, sometimes even poisonous, pollen (some Ranunculus sp.) is evidently due to the phagostimulant present in all pollen types.  相似文献

Reproduction and longevity of the anthocorid predators Orius laevigatus (Fieber) and Orius albidipennis (Reuter) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) were studied under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Three different diets were tested: eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth. Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, E. kuehniella eggs plus pollen, and pollen only. Small rooted plants of Spanish pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Creta, long red) served as oviposition substrate and moisture source. In all treatments, total fecundity, oviposition period and female longevity of O. laevigatus were greater than that of O. albidipennis. When a diet of E. kuehniella eggs was supplemented with pollen, total fecundity of O. albidipennis was increased by about 40%. Female O. albidipennis fed only pollen laid five times less eggs than those fed flour moth eggs and pollen; also, longevity of females was shorter when only pollen was offered as food. Fecundity and longevity of O. laevigatus were not influenced when supplementing a diet of E. kuehniella eggs with pollen. Females of O. laevigatus receiving only pollen reduced egg production by about 60% but had a similar longevity as those receiving a diet including flour moth eggs. In either species, preoviposition period and egg hatch were not affected by diet. The ability of both anthocorids to use pollen as an alternative or additional food is discussed in relation to their practical use in integrated control programmes.  相似文献

A trial was conducted to test the effect of fine grinding (micronization) of soya bean meal (SBM) and full-fat soya bean (FFSB) on coefficient of ileal apparent digestibility (CIAD) and coefficient of ileal true digestibility (CITD) of amino acids in 23-day-old broilers. A completely randomized block design with four treatments arranged factorially (SBM and FFSB; micronized and ground) and six replicates (eight broilers per treatment) was used. Mean particle size (MPS) was 47 and 41 μm for micronized SBM and FFSB and 881 and 778 μm for ground SBM and FFSB, respectively. The four diets were based on maize starch and sucrose with the soya product tested as the sole source of dietary crude protein (CP, 200 g/kg). In addition, a nitrogen-free diet was formulated to estimate the basal ileal endogenous losses of the amino acids. Broilers were fed a commercial pelleted maize-SBM diet from 1 to 19 days of age and, then, their respective experimental diets in mash form from 20 to 23 days of age. Broilers fed SBM had higher CIAD of organic matter, CP, arginine, leucine, methionine and valine (P<0.05) and tended to have higher CIAD of threonine (P<0.10) than broilers fed FFSB. In addition, broilers fed SBM had higher CITD of CP (P<0.05), leucine, methionine and valine (P<0.01) than broilers fed FFSB. Particle size did not affect the ileal digestibility of CP or of any of the essential amino acids. It is concluded that broilers fed soya bean meal had higher ileal digestibility of amino acids than broilers fed full-fat soya bean and that fine grinding of the soya products did not affect amino acid digestibility.  相似文献

Transgenic cotton containing a synthetic version of the insecticidal toxin gene from Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki has been planted in China in a large scale and may have adverse impacts on honeybees. The pollens of the transgenic cotton and the non-transgenic parental cotton were collected and their impacts on worker bees were tested. Experimental results showed that the transgenic cotton pollen had no oral acute toxic effects on worker bees. No significant difference was observed in the superoxide dismutases activity and the longevity of worker bees fed with diets containing the transgenic cotton pollen or non-transgenic parental cotton pollen. The results of our experiment indicate that the transgenic cotton has no direct adverse impacts on honeybees. Further work needs to be carried out to evaluate the long-term and indirect impacts of the transgenic cotton on honeybees.  相似文献

The longevity and reproductive success of newly emerged, unfed adult Aethina tumida Murray assigned different diets (control = unfed; honey-pollen; honey; pollen; empty brood comb; bee brood; fresh Kei apples; and rotten Kei apples) were determined. Longevity in honey-fed small hive beetle adults (average maximum: 167 d) was significantly higher than on other diets. Small hive beetles fed empty brood comb lived significantly longer (average maximum: 49.8 d) than unfed beetles (average maximum: 9.6 d). Small hive beetle offspring were produced on honey-pollen, pollen, bee brood, fresh Kei apples, and rotten Kei apples but not on honey alone, empty brood comb, or in control treatments. The highest reproductive success occurred in pollen fed adults (1773.8 +/- 294.4 larvae per three mating pairs of adults). The data also show that A. tumida can reproduce on fruits alone, indicating that they are facultative parasites. The pupation success and sex ratio of small hive beetle offspring were also analyzed. Larvae fed pollen, honey-pollen, or brood had significantly higher pupation success rates of 0.64, 0.73, and 0.65 respectively than on the other diets. Sex ratios of emerging adults fed diets of pollen or brood as larvae were significantly skewed toward females. Because small hive beetle longevity and overall reproductive success was highest on foodstuffs located in honey bee colonies, A. tumida are efficient at causing large-scale damage to colonies of honey bees resulting in economic injury for the beekeeper. Practical considerations for the control of A. tumida are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Multiple stressors are currently threatening honey bee health, including pests and pathogens. Among honey bee pathogens, Nosema ceranae is a microsporidian found parasitizing the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) relatively recently. Honey bee colonies are fed pollen or protein substitute during pollen dearth to boost colony growth and immunity against pests and pathogens. Here we hypothesize that N. ceranae intensity and prevalence will be low in bees receiving high pollen diets, and that honey bees on high pollen diets will have higher survival and/or increased longevity. To test this hypothesis we examined the effects of different quantities of pollen on (a) the intensity and prevalence of N. ceranae and (b) longevity and nutritional physiology of bees inoculated with N. ceranae. Significantly higher spore intensities were observed in treatments that received higher pollen quantities (1:0 and 1:1 pollen:cellulose) when compared to treatments that received relatively lower pollen quantities. There were no significant differences in N. ceranae prevalence among different pollen diet treatments. Interestingly, the bees in higher pollen quantity treatments also had significantly higher survival despite higher intensities of N. ceranae. Significantly higher hypopharyngeal gland protein was observed in the control (no Nosema infection, and receiving a diet of 1:0 pollen:cellulose), followed by 1:0 pollen:cellulose treatment that was inoculated with N. ceranae. Here we demonstrate that diet with higher pollen quantity increases N. ceranae intensity, but also enhances the survival or longevity of honey bees. The information from this study could potentially help beekeepers formulate appropriate protein feeding regimens for their colonies to mitigate N. ceranae problems.  相似文献

Substitution of unextracted sunflower seeds for either 0, 25, 50 or 100% of the soya bean meal in pig diets produced no significant differences in digestible energy or apparent nitrogen retention. However, all diets containing unextracted sunflower seeds had significantly higher digestible nitrogen than the diets containing soya bean meal as the protein source. Replacement of 25% of the soya bean meal with unextracted sunflower seeds produced the greatest increase in digestibility. Rate and efficiency of gain in rats were used to evaluate the effects of autoclaving unextracted sunflower seeds at 115°C with 1.05 kg/cm2 pressure for 0, 5 or 10 minutes. Rats fed on the basal maize-soya bean meal diet gained significantly faster and more efficiently than the rats fed on the diets containing the sunflower seeds. An increase in heating time of the sunflower seeds produced a significant reduction in rate and efficiency of rat gain.  相似文献

Evolutionary transitions to dim-light foraging (predawn matinal, crepuscular, nocturnal) have occurred repeatedly in bees, and may be associated with an escape from enemies or competitors. To date, however, little information has been available to test these hypotheses. Here we provide the first detailed information on the nesting behaviour of two species of Neotropical, nocturnal sweat bees, Megalopta genalis and M. ecuadoria (Hymenoptera: Halictidae). Females are facultatively social or solitary, and construct nests in dead wood. Nocturnal foraging behaviour is bimodal. Bees began foraging after sunset (∼18:30 h) and ceased foraging approximately 1 h later even though nocturnal flowers with pollen were still abundant; a second foraging bout occurred in the predawn morning, which began at ∼04:45 h and ended around sunrise (∼06:15 h) when diurnal-blooming flowers were abundant. Bees are capable of controlled flight in full light. They utilized pollen from both canopy and understory plant species, which have diurnal or nocturnal pollen anthesis. Megalopta nests are attacked by generalist predators such as ants, as well as the endoparasitic fly Melaloncha sp. nov. (Phoridae), the beetle Macrosaigon gracilis (Rhipophoridae), the parasitic wasp Lophostigma cincta (Mutillidae), and the brood parasite Megalopta byroni (Halictidae). Overall nest survivorship rates were comparable to those for diurnal relatives, but rates of cell parasitism for Megalopta (< < 5%) were substantially lower than they are for day-flying relatives, offering some support for the hypothesis that the evolution of nocturnal behaviour enables escape from natural enemies.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 377–387.  相似文献

Honey bee colonies are highly dependent upon the availability of floral resources from which they get the nutrients (notably pollen) necessary to their development and survival. However, foraging areas are currently affected by the intensification of agriculture and landscape alteration. Bees are therefore confronted to disparities in time and space of floral resource abundance, type and diversity, which might provide inadequate nutrition and endanger colonies. The beneficial influence of pollen availability on bee health is well-established but whether quality and diversity of pollen diets can modify bee health remains largely unknown. We therefore tested the influence of pollen diet quality (different monofloral pollens) and diversity (polyfloral pollen diet) on the physiology of young nurse bees, which have a distinct nutritional physiology (e.g. hypopharyngeal gland development and vitellogenin level), and on the tolerance to the microsporidian parasite Nosema ceranae by measuring bee survival and the activity of different enzymes potentially involved in bee health and defense response (glutathione-S-transferase (detoxification), phenoloxidase (immunity) and alkaline phosphatase (metabolism)). We found that both nurse bee physiology and the tolerance to the parasite were affected by pollen quality. Pollen diet diversity had no effect on the nurse bee physiology and the survival of healthy bees. However, when parasitized, bees fed with the polyfloral blend lived longer than bees fed with monofloral pollens, excepted for the protein-richest monofloral pollen. Furthermore, the survival was positively correlated to alkaline phosphatase activity in healthy bees and to phenoloxydase activities in infected bees. Our results support the idea that both the quality and diversity (in a specific context) of pollen can shape bee physiology and might help to better understand the influence of agriculture and land-use intensification on bee nutrition and health.  相似文献

The effects of inclusion in the diet of different sources of soya bean meal (SBM) on growth performance, total tract apparent digestibility (TTAD) and apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of major dietary components and mucosal ileum morphology were studied in Iberian pigs weaned at 30 days of age. From 30 to 51 days of age (phase I), there was a control diet based on regular soya bean meal (R-SBM; 44% CP) of Argentina (ARG) origin and five extra diets in which a high-protein soya bean meal (HP-SBM; 49% CP) of the USA or ARG origin, either ground (990 μm) or micronized (60 μm), or a soya protein concentrate (SPC; 65% CP) substituted the R-SBM. From 51 to 61 days of age (phase II), all pigs were fed a common commercial diet in mash form. The following pre-planned orthogonal contrasts were conducted: (1) R-SBM v. all the other diets, (2) SPC v. all the HP-SBM diets, (3) micronized HP-SBM v. ground HP-SBM, (4) HP-SBM of ARG origin v. HP-SBM of US origin and (5) interaction between source and the degree of grinding of the HP-SBM. Dietary treatment did not affect growth performance of the pigs at any age but from 30 to 51 days of age, post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) was higher (P<0.001) and the TTAD and AID of all nutrients were lower for pigs fed the R-SBM diet than for pigs fed the HP-SBM or the SPC diets. However, no differences between the HP-SBM and the SPC containing diets were detected for any trait. The TTAD of organic matter (P=0.07) and gross energy (GE) (P=0.05) tended to be higher for the micronized HP-SBM than for the ground HP-SBM and that of GE was higher (P<0.05) for US meal than for the ARG meal. Pigs fed R-SBM had lower villus height (P<0.01) than pigs fed HP-SBM or SPC but no differences in ileal mucosal morphology were detected between SPC and HP-SBM containing diets. It is concluded that feeding the HP-SBM or SPC-reduced PWD and improved nutrient digestibility and ileal morphology as compared with feeding the R-SBM, but had no effect on pig performance. The inclusion in the diet of added value soya products (micronized SBM or SPC) in substitution of the R-SBM increased the TTAD of all nutrients and reduced PWD but had no advantage in terms of growth performance over the use of ground HP-SBM.  相似文献

Honey bees display a powerful ability to recognize pollen from most plants as food and non-pollen materials as not being food. We sequentially extracted a mixed species blend of pollen with a range of non polar to polar solvents and tested the extracts for attractiveness and feeding enhancement by young bees. Both non polar and polar materials were independently attractive when added in trace quantities to a plain artificial diet. The attractants have little inherent nutritional value, as addition of phagostimulants to artificial diets did not increase the life spans of bees compared to phagostimulant-free diets. These data indicate that pollen phagostimulants consist not of a single or a few specific compounds, but rather are a suite of diverse components that additively or synergistically serve to exceed a threshold level of stimulation necessary for feeding.  相似文献

Potato protease inhibitors, POT-1 and POT-2, were fed to newly emerged adult honey bees in cages at different doses in either sugar syrup (0.2 or 0.01% w:v) or pollen food (1 or 0.2% w:w). In vivo activities of three digestive endopeptidases (trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase) and one exopeptidase (leucine aminopeptidase; LAP) were measured after 3 or 8days' exposure of bees to inhibitor. Enzyme activities were significantly lower at day 8 than at day 3, except for elastase, which did not change. POT-2 significantly reduced the activity of all endopeptidases at both timepoints, regardless of the dose level or the medium in which the inhibitor was administered. POT-1 acted in a similar manner, except that 0.01% POT-1 in syrup had no effect on bees. There was no consistent trend in changes in LAP activity. Bees fed either inhibitor at 1% in pollen or at 0.2% in syrup had significantly reduced lifespans, with the effect of the pollen treatment being greater than the syrup treatment. Growth and digestibility trials were conducted using African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822): (1) to obtain apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) values for capelin fish meal, soybean flour and corn meal; (2) to formulate diets based on ADC values of the protein feedstuffs; and (3) to evaluate the effects of replacing 25%, 50% and 75% of fish meal in control diets with soybean flour on growth, feed utilization efficiency and carcass composition. Supplemental methionine was added to the diet formulation in which soybean flour replaced 75% of the diet. Diets were formulated (400 g digestible protein kg−1 and 15 kJ digestible energy g−1 dry diet) and fed to catfish fingerlings (13.1 ± 0.5 g) to apparent satiation twice daily for 70 days. The protein and energy digestibilities of fish meal and soybean flour were high (>90% and >80%, respectively; P < 0.05). At 75% fish meal replacement with soybean flour (without methionine supplementation), growth and feed utilization efficiency indicators were depressed compared with other diet treatments which had a similar (P > 0.05) growth and feed utilization efficiency to those fed the control diet. The carcass compositions of catfish in all diets were similar (P > 0.05) and the liver histology of catfish fed any of the diets showed no alterations. The results obtained indicate that 50% of fish meal protein in practical catfish diets can be replaced with soybean flour and that catfish can effectively utilize supplemental methionine, thereby allowing up to 75% of the dietary fish meal protein to be replaced by soybean flour.  相似文献
