Based on the premise that augmented host numbers may help multiply and support parasitoid populations, the egg parasitoid Trichogramma platneri Nargarkatti was released in apple orchards which were participating in a sterile codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), release program. Nonviable eggs resulting from matings involving at least one sterile codling moth partner can be successfully parasitized by T. platneri. Grain moth-reared, as well as codling moth-reared, T. platneri were released either in the spring or in the spring and summer oviposition period(s) of wild codling moth. Sentinel codling moth eggs were hung weekly, for 3-day periods, from May until September to determine fluctuations in T. platneri populations both during and between releases. Low numbers of wild or nonviable codling moth eggs or other susceptible host eggs resulted in sufficient eggs to maintain low spring- or summer-introduced T. platneri populations. T. platneri reduced codling moth damage in trees in which the Trichogramma were released.  相似文献

Synopsis Serranus tabacarius (Serranidae), the tobaccofish, is a simultaneous hermaphrodite which belongs to a group of seabasses that exhibit a wide variety of social and mating systems. The reproductive behavior of tobaccofish is similar to other hermaphroditic seabasses, with individuals assuming sex-specific spawning behaviors that allow for the assignment of male and female roles in a mating sequence. Virtually all matings involved pairs of individuals, although streaking, an alternative male mating tactic, was observed once. Pairs engage in egg trading, where individuals divide their daily clutch into a series of sequentially released parcels and take turns releasing eggs for their partner to fertilize. Individuals mate over a late afternoon spawning period with a number of partners sequentially. Larger individuals have both more total matings and more spawning partners. Egg trading is not symmetrical, the number of male and female matings for an individual in a spawning sequence is often unequal. Overall, the ratio of male to female matings increases with individual size. Large individuals are socially dominant, chase conspecifics during the reproductive period, and are more likely to end a spawning bout with a partner immediately after mating in the male role. In addition, larger individuals are less likely to reciprocate female matings by a partner, either by only mating once (as a male) in a spawning bout or by mating consecutively as a male within a series of matings. Although larger individuals show this relative specialization in the male role, they maintain their simultaneous hermaphroditism and obtain a substantial percentage of their mating success through female function. Egg trading appears to reduce the opportunity for large individuals to specialize as pure males, and thus interacts with the environmental potential for polygamy in shaping the mating system and sex allocation pattern in this species.  相似文献

In zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) simultaneous release of gametes and peaks in larval densities at particular locations suggest that spawning is triggered by synchronizing stimuli. Furthermore, spawning tends to occur only after an adequate environmental temperature is reached. To test the hypothesis that phytoplankton and gamete-associated chemicals initiate spawning in zebra mussels and that the responsiveness to such chemicals is affected by ambient temperature, the spawning response of zebra mussels to extracts from algae, a cryptomonad, and a cyanobacterium and to water associated with released gametes was assayed in animals acclimated to 12 ^C and 17 ^C. For animals held at 12 ^C, only serotonin, a known activator of bivalve spawning used as a positive control, stimulated spawning. However, for animals acclimated to 17 ^C, extracts made from a diatom (Phaeodactylum), a brown alga (Fucus), and a cryptomonad (Rhodomonas) stimulated spawning in both sexes; extracts from green algae (Platymonas and Dunaliella) and a cyanobacterium (Oscillatoria) did not cause spawning. Water associated with either released sperm or eggs elicited spawning in both females and males. Positive controls, stimulated with serotonin, spawned at a high (>90%) rate, whereas no negative control spawned. Thus, phytoplankton chemicals and gamete-associated factors may have a role in synchronizing spawning in zebra mussels once adequate ambient temperature is reached.  相似文献

1. Natural selection favours females who can correctly assess the predation risk and hence avoid high‐risk oviposition sites and reduce the mortality rate of their offspring. In spite of the potential significance of such behaviour, relatively few studies have assessed the relationship between oviposition behaviour and predation risk. 2. The present study aimed to determine the sublethal effects of predators on oviposition site selection by gravid females, the foraging activity of larvae, and the life history traits of two mosquito species that breed in different habitats, Aedes albopictus Skuse (container breeder) and Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles (wetland breeder). 3. Female C. tritaeniorhynchus avoided laying eggs at oviposition sites in the presence of a predator cue. In contrast, female A. albopictus laid eggs in both the absence and presence of the predator cue. 4. To examine the effects of predator cues on larval behaviour, experiments were conducted in the absence and presence of a predator cue. Although larval activity was lower in the presence of the predator cue than that in its absence in both species, C. tritaeniorhynchus responded to the predator cue more strongly than A. albopictus. Female A. albopictus that had been reared with caged predators exhibited an extended larval development period, whereas the adult C. tritaeniorhynchus reared in the presence of predators were smaller than those reared in their absence. 5. This finding might explain why C. tritaeniorhynchus avoid laying eggs in predator‐conditioned water, for example to increase the fitness of their offspring, but A. albopictus either cannot detect predator cues or are not sensitive to them.  相似文献

Synopsis In fish, gamete release is commonly assumed to be synchronous in externally inseminating fishes. By collecting and counting the number of sperm and eggs released during separate matings in three demersal spawners, the mediterranean gobies, Zosterisessor ophiocephalus, Gobius niger, and Knipowitschia panizzae, we observed that gametes are released asynchronously. Males release sperm before females start laying their eggs. Sperm is released in the form of sperm trails laid on the nest surface; subsequently active spermatozoa leave the trails and move in the water for several minutes. Sperm trails consist of bands of viscous material in which sperm is embedded. In most cases eggs are not laid directly over the sperm trail, suggesting that sperm may contact the eggs after the latter are released in the water. Male sperm duct glands, seminal vesicles, known to secrete mucosubstances, are likely involved in the production of sperm trails. The possible influence of this mode of insemination on the mating style of marine gobies is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of single versus multiple mating on longevity and fecundity as well as the number of matings required to maximize a female’s reproductive success of the predatory mite Kampimodromus aberrans Oudemans were studied under laboratory conditions. Newly emerged adult females of the stock colony of K. aberrans were placed individually on a bean leaf disc, and maintained at 25°C and 16:8 LD. A young male remained with a female for limited periods or continuously. Mating was a requisite for oocyte maturation and oviposition. Females which mated three to four times during their life and females in continuous presence of males, laid significantly and considerably more eggs than single-mated females. Virgin females lived the longest, and those in continuous presence of males the shortest. In all cases and irrespective of the number of matings, the sex ratio of the offspring was male-biased in the first three to four days of oviposition period, and female-biased in later days.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to determine whether chemosensory cues emanating from lake trout Salvelinus namaycush spawning substratum attract breeding S. namaycush. Substrata from either a spawning site or a control site were randomly placed in trap nets around an isolated spawning shoal; those containing spawning substratum caught significantly more S. namaycush, as well as a greater proportion in breeding condition. White sucker Catostomus commersoni were a major predator of S. namaycush eggs and were also captured in greater numbers in nets with spawning substratum.  相似文献

Synopsis The spawning behavior of the Atlantic silverside,Menidia menidia, was studied at two sites on the North Edisto River estuary in South Carolina. Prespawning schools moved back and forth along the shoreline as the time of high tide approached. Spawning runs took place in the upper intertidal zone at high tide.Spawning fish deposited their eggs on three types of substrates: 1) the lower stems of cordgrass plants,Spartina alterniflora, 2) detrital mats, and 3) exposed cordgrass roots along erosional scraps. Spawning behavior during egg deposition and fertilization was similar for all three substrates. Females released eggs during a rapid fluttering motion of the posterior half of the body. A similar movement accompanied release of sperm by males. Behavior of fish just prior to spawning insured deposition of gametes at locations that provided protection from thermal and drying stress during development. Eggs were deposited at mean intertidal elevations of 1.8 and 1.5 meters above mean low water (MLW) at respective study sites. They were exposed to the atmosphere for approximately ten hours between successive high tides.During spawning runs in which eggs were deposited at the base of cordgrass plants, ambient dissolved oxygen concentrations of the water in the spawning area were sometimes reduced to < 1.0 mg. 1–1. Spent fish, apparently incurring an oxygen debt while spawning, formed a nonschooling aggregation offshore from the spawning zone. The recurrent use of specific spawning substrates for egg deposition resulted in an uneven distribution of spawning runs along the shoreline at each study site.Contribution No. 409 to the Gulf Breeze Environmental Research Laboratory. The process of egg release is a complex and crucial step in the life cycle of euphausiids, especially with regards mortality and recruitment success. We examined this process in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) in terms of the functioning of the female genital apparatus and associated swimming behaviour. A tethering technique combined with video analysis was used to make observations of three females during the release process. We found eggs were steadily extruded over a period of up to 10 h, during which time the krill released between 1,600 and 4,000 eggs and the ovary reduced by a half in length and a third in height. Eggs were mainly released individually or, less commonly, in batches of between 2 and 4 eggs. Release rates were between 5 and 30 eggs min−1. The steady release of eggs fits well with histological evidence that mature oocytes must pass individually through tight genital ducts with narrow apertures, before coming in to close contact with the sperm plug for fertilisation, and then expulsion from the thelycum as fertilised eggs. During spawning, the female alternated between slow and rapid rates of pleopod beating with egg release occurring at the moment of beat acceleration. At the point of release, the descent of the egg was accelerated through downward beats of the 7th thoracic leg. The cyclic pattern in pleopod beat-rate during spawning may alter swimming performance and contribute to the widely reported sex- and maturity-based biases within krill swarms.  相似文献

Some aspects of the reproductive ecology of the rock catfish Silurus lithophilus (Siluriformes: Siluridae), a species endemic to the Lake Biwa system, were investigated from April to July in 1989–1994. Field observations were conducted at a rocky shoal, which was also a spawning ground of S. biwaensis, along the shore of the Seta River, the lake's outlet. Spawning of S. lithophilus occurred around midnight at shallow, rocky places on the shoal (5–70 cm in water depth) from early May to mid-July, starting earlier than S. biwaensis (mid-May to mid-July). Spawning tended to occur at low water temperatures irrespective of high-water events, unlike S. biwaensis, and in low densities (fewer than 8 fish per night) compared to S. biwaensis (1–45 fish per night). Although the rock catfish tended to appear and spawn at higher frequencies on nights when S. biwaensis spawned or appeared, it always avoided conflict with the latter species by spawning at sites far from those used by S. biwaensis or after S. biwaensis had left the vicinity. The survival of eggs of S. lithophilus might be favored by a strategy of diverting predator attention from them by synchronizing spawning nights with S. biwaensis. Phenological and some biological characteristics of Hippodamia (Adonia) variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), such as voltinism, hibernation, number of progeny produced by each generation, mating activity and sex ratio were studied, in order to evaluate the significance of this predator. The study of phenology was conducted in outdoor cages in Kifissia (Athens), during 1999--2001 and as prey was given Dysaphis crataegi (Kaltenbach). Hippodamia variegata completed seven generations between April and November. The hibernating population of H. variegata consisted of adults of 6th and 7th generations. The fecundity of the predator was studied under constant conditions [25 °C, 65% R.H. and 16:8(L:D)h photoperiod] in the laboratory and some population parameters were calculated: The total fecundity ranged between 789 and 1256 eggs, while the mean total fecundity was 959.6 eggs. The greatest proportion of eggs (45%) was oviposited in clutches of 11--20 eggs. The net reproductive value (R0) was found to be 425.9 females/female, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) 0.178 females/female/day and the mean generation time (T) 34.0 days.  相似文献

In choice test experiments on strawberry leaf disc arenas the phytoseiid mites Neoseiulus californicus and N. cucumeris were more effective than Typhlodromus pyri as predators of the phytophagous mites Tetranychus urticae and Phytonemus pallidus. There were no preferences shown for either prey by any of these predators. In multiple predator leaf disc experiments both Phytoseiulus persimilis and N. cucumeris significantly reduced numbers of T. urticae eggs and active stages; this effect was seen when the two species were present alone or in combination with other predator species. Neoseiulus californicus was less effective at reducing T. urticae numbers, and T. pyri was not effective; no interaction between predator species was detected in these experiments. When T. urticae alone was present as prey on potted plants, P. persimilis and N. californicus were the only phytoseiids to significantly reduce T. urticae numbers. These two predator species provided effective control of T. urticae when P. pallidus was also present; however, none of the predators reduced numbers of P. pallidus. There were no significant negative interactions when different species of predators were present together on these potted plants. In field experiments, releases of both P. persimilis and N. cucumeris significantly reduced T. urticae numbers. However, there was a significant interaction between these predator species, leading to poorer control of T. urticae when both species were released together. These results show the importance of conducting predator/prey feeding tests at different spatial scales.  相似文献

Synopsis The status of knowledge of spawning among the five shallow waterChaetodon species in the western Atlantic is reviewed. Spawning has been observed for three species in Puerto Rico, St. Croix and the Bahamas, with possible courtship in a fourth.Chaetodon aculeatus spawned near the time of sunset over objects on the reef as single female/male pairs or as two females and one male, with pair spawning in rapid succession. Spawning occurred during much of the lunar month from February to April and it is uncertain whether any lunar periodicity to spawning exists. Male-male aggression was noted. Spawning sites (coral heads) were alternated daily and it is likely that females spawn only once every two days. A single female produced as many as 2090 eggs in a single spawning.Chaetodon capistratus spawned during much of the lunar month from February to April. It spawned about 5 min afterC. aculeatus, occasionally using the same sites, and alternated sites daily. A female produced as many as 3710 eggs in one spawning.Chaetodon striatus spawned from February to April but it is unknown if it has any lunar spawning cycle. No predation attempts by piscivores on spawning adults were seen. Predation byMelichthys niger on eggs ofC. striatus occurred. No egg predation was observed forC. aculeatus andC. capistratus. With an assumed four month reproductive season, alternate day spawning and observed egg production values,C. aculeatus andC. capistratus produce respectively about 100 000 and 200 000 eggs per large female per year. The reproductive strategy of smaller species may be to produce moderate numbers of eggs per day over a spawning season of at least a few months while larger species may produce more eggs per day for a shorter period.  相似文献

Spider mites inhabiting Sasa bamboo show considerable variation in traits believed to be the result of coevolution between predator and prey. In Schizotetranychus recki Ehara inhabiting the hairy leaves of a dwarf bamboo, Sasa senanensis, all quiescent stages, including eggs, appear within web boxes in the leaf hairs of their host plant, and this habit is thought to be a trait involved in predator avoidance. To test this hypothesis, the survival rates of S. recki eggs inside a web box and those freed of a web box were assessed in relation to six predator species that co-occur with the spider mite in the field. The results clearly show that the webbing behavior (web box) of S. recki has a function in avoiding five predator species. However, one predator species, Agistemus summersi Ehara, preyed more on eggs protected by a web box. This suggests that this predator species has a special trait to overcome the nest barriers.  相似文献

Northern pike (Esox lucius) spawning habitat and egg mortality were studied in three spawning areas in 2001 along the Swedish coast of the Baltic proper: the Blekinge Archipelago, Kalmar Sound and coastal freshwater streams. Spawning peaked during the last week of April in streams, at temperatures ranging from 7.7 to 8.9 °C and during the first week of May in brackish waters, at temperatures ranging from 8.9 to 13.8 °C. Spawning occurred in shallow waters, at depths between 0.2–1.5 m, but generally most of the spawn was found in the shallowest areas. In streams, eggs were mainly attached to emersed vegetation, while in brackish sites pike eggs were well scattered among flooded emersed plants, submersed plants and filamentous algae. Mean egg density varied between 469–1829 m–2 with the lowest density observed in Kalmar Sound. The calculated egg loss occurring from approximately one day after spawning to one day before hatching ranged from 41±7% in coastal streams to 67±6% in the Blekinge Archipelago and 100% in Kalmar Sound. The significant removal of eggs from spawning sites in Kalmar Sound and Blekinge was most likely due to predation from several fish species. In situ observations and stomach analyses suggested that many pike eggs in Kalmar Sound were lost to the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a species that presently dominate the littoral small fish community. This study therefore suggests that egg predation by sticklebacks and other fishes may be a possible cause of the reported poor recruitment of coastal pike populations in the Kalmar Sound region.  相似文献

Mass spawning strategies of hard and soft corals on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia have been described in recent years. Nonetheless, the applicability of those studies to corals on other reef systems has not been well documented. Here we describe the mass spawning behavior of the soft coral Sinularia polydactyla on coral reefs surrounding Guam; specifically we describe the events in an annual gametogenic cycle including steroidogenesis, spawning, settlement and early life history defense. The gametogenic cycle of female colonies lasted 12 months while male colonies produced viable sperm within 9 months. Sinularia polydactyla exhibited a split spawn between March and June that correlated with a significant reduction in tissue concentrations of progesterone and testosterone. Estradiol was released into the water column, apparently by female colonies, just prior to spawning. There was a trend for preferential larval settlement in the presence of the crustose coralline algae Hydrolithon reinboldii rather than coral rubble, a natural biofilm, or filtered seawater. The defensive compounds pukalide and 11β-acetoxypukalide were found in eggs and larvae at adult level and three-fold lower than adult-level concentrations, respectively. These compounds provided some predator deterrent and antimicrobial protection against an ecologically relevant omnivorous fish Canthigaster solandri and a sympatric microbe Vibrio sp. Mitochondrial DNA typing of 52 fish eggs collected in Sendai Bay and off Johban revealed ten haplotypes of the 225–251 bp region of 16S ribosomal DNA. Comparing with known sequences of fishes, we identified them as Trachurus japonicus (Carangidae), Pagrus major, Evynnis japonica (Sparidae), Paralichthys olivaceus, Pseudorhombus sp. (Paralichthidae), Pennahia argentata (Sciaenidae) and Platycephalus sp. (Platycephalidae). The occurrence of Trachurus japonicus and sparid eggs in the study area indicates significant extensions to the ranges of their spawning sites northward. Our method is useful for identifying fish eggs that are difficult to diagnose by morphology, and to uncover cryptic fish egg assemblages in the field.  相似文献

Synopsis Of 23 males and 39 females of Plecodus straeleni observed for one hour each, 2 males and 14 females searched for the mouthbrooder Cyathopharynx furcifer under courtship display near or in the bower to get eggs, besides foraging for other prey to ripe off scales and skin. After finding a courting C. furcifer, they quietly waited on the substrate near the bower until it spawned. Immediately after spawning, the waiting P. straeleni dashed upon the female of C. furcifer and quickly collected the eggs. This egg-eating was achieved 5 times by 3 females who spent most of their time searching and waiting.  相似文献

Studies on the reproduction, longevity and life table parameters of Iphiseius degenerans (Berlese) were carried out under laboratory conditions of 25 ± 1 °C, 75 ± 5% RH and 16L:8D h. As food sources for the predatory mite, Ricinus communis L. pollen, all stages of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) larvae, and Ephestia kuehniella Zeller eggs were selected. All diets were accepted as food by the adult mites. Female longevity ranged from 29.5 to 42.4 days, the highest value was recorded on a diet of Ephestia eggs. The highest percentage of females escaping the experimental arena was observed on the diet consisting of thrips larvae. The highest oviposition rate (1.9 eggs/female.day) was recorded when the predator was fed on spider mites on an artificial substrate. For other diets, oviposition rates ranged from 1.0 to 1.3 eggs/female.day. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) of I. degenerans varied between 0.015 and 0.142 females/female.day. The diet consisting of castor bean pollen resulted in the highest population growth whereas the diet on spider mites brushed off onto a bean leaf arena resulted in the slowest population growth. This can be explained by the inability of the predator to cope with the webbing of T. urticae, and the high escape rate of the progeny when reared on spider mites. The percentage of females in the offspring ranged from 40 to 73%.This revised version was published online in May 2005 with a corrected cover date.  相似文献

Synopsis Many stream fishes lay demersal eggs. Some species simply scatter the eggs across the substrate, but many place the eggs in protected sites such as crevices (e.g., Cyprinidae:Cyprinella). Eggs laid in crevices may experience increased development times or lower embryo survival due to reduced water exchange rates compared to more open egg deposition sites. If so, the presence of an appreciable current near the crevice may be important for insuring water exchange. However, currents that are too strong may prevent complete insemination or prevent the eggs from adhering to the substratum before they are washed from the crevice. Thus, current speed preferences for spawning may be under strong stabilizing selection. Representatives of four populations of a crevice spawning stream fish (blacktail shiner,Cyprinella venusta), representing environments ranging from a swift stream to a lake, were studied in stream tanks to evaluate female spawning current use. The observed frequency of use of spawning currents was significantly different from random in all populations. Low current speeds were generally avoided, and a speed of ca. 30 cm sec–1 was used most often. However, significant differences were observed among populations, and the variation correlated well with the apparent range of current speeds found in the four environments. Although other possible explanations cannot be dismissed, the results are consistent with the hypothesis that the populations have become adapted to their local current regimes.Authorship in order of seniority  相似文献
