Trichogramma ostriniae has shown success as a biological control agent for European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) in sweet corn and the species offers potential for suppression of lepidopteran pests of field corn. Field corn is typically planted at higher densities, is taller, and has greater leaf area than sweet corn, presenting a possible restriction on T. ostriniae dispersal and efficacy. Therefore, parasitoid dispersal in field corn from the centre of a 6.25 ha square grid was determined using sticky cards to capture adult T. ostriniae and sentinel eggs of O. nubilalis to monitor parasitism after releases of ~1 million of T. ostriniae each into four fields of corn. Dispersal was rapid and extensive, achieving distances of ~175 m within 4–7 days after release. The pattern of movement fit well with a diffusion model of dispersal, with the greatest level of dispersal occurring from 7 to 10 days post-release. Parasitism of O. nubilalis sentinel egg masses declined linearly with distance from the release foci, and was also greatest 7–10 days post-release. However, measurement of association showed no significant differences between the spatial distributions of sticky trap captures and percentage parasitism of O. nubilalis egg masses. The distances from the release point that encompassed 98% of re-captured T. ostriniae increased over time and were estimated to range from a low of 100 m at 4 days post-release to 365 m at 14 days post-release. The results of this research suggest that T. ostriniae relies initially on random movement to locate host patches, and that a single release locus per hectare would be sufficient in field corn.  相似文献

Trichogramma ostriniae (Hym: Trichogrammatidae), an egg parasitoid of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Lep: Pyralidae), were released into sweet corn (Zea mays L.) fields to study the effects of weather, plant size and distribution of egg masses on egg parasitism by the wasp. Sentinel European corn borer eggs were stapled onto leaves located in the upper, middle and lower third of sweet corn plants 5 to 35 meters away from the wasp release point in either a radial or grid manner. Weather conditions and plant architecture were monitored during the experiments. Logistic regression was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that percentage of eggs parasitized was negatively related to an increase in leaf area as well as an increase in distance eggs were located from the point of release of wasps. Eggs distributed on plants at different directions from the release point received different levels of parasitism. Eggs that were stapled onto leaves in the upper third of a corn plant received much less parasitism than those on the middle and lower third of the plant. Higher mean temperature adversely affected the level of parasitism during hotter times of the season and conversely, lower temperatures (<17 °C ) reduced the egg parasitism during cooler times of the season. The longer the exposure of eggs to wasps, the higher the level of egg parasitism. However, the levels of egg parasitism for 2 day's exposure were almost the same as that for 3 day's exposure due to the limited longevity and egg-laying behavior of the wasp. These results suggest that inundative releases of T. ostriniae should be made every two to three days, with multiple release points per hectare. In addition, weather conditions and plant architecture, especially temperature, plant height and leaf area must be taken into consideration to optimize levels of parasitism.  相似文献

Ambulatory dispersal behavior ofNeoseiulus fallacis (Garman) was studied in the laboratory to evaluate within-plant movement in relation to temperature and prey density. Adult femaleN. fallacis were confined in 2.5-cm-diameter arenas on the abaxial surface of excised corn leaves. Four temperatures (23, 28, 33, and 39° C) and prey densities ranging from 0 to 55 spider mite eggs per cm2 were used. The walking paths of these mites were traced, digitized and used to calculate turning angles, walking speeds and turning rates. A computer simulation of walking behavior used this information to model mite ambulatory behavior and predict dispersal rates.Neoseiulus fallacis behavior while on whole corn leaves was quantified to verify the results of the simulation. The results showed thatN. fallacis will follow a leaf or arena edge (edge-walking) at all temperatures and prey densities. In addition, this behavior was used to the exclusion of the other types of behavior such as resting, and random-walk type search when prey egg density was less than 4 eggs per cm2. The exclusion of edge-walking behavior from the model caused the model to underestimate substantially the dispersal rates leaves. These data suggest that there are at least two recognizable types of ambulatory search used byN. fallacis—the random-walk type, which is used when prey density is high (searching within prey patches), and the edge-walking behavior, which is used when prey density is low. This behavior allows the mite to travel rapidly from leaf to leaf in search of new prey patches.  相似文献

In order to succeed in biological control programs, not only is it crucial to understand the number of natural enemies to be released but also on how many sites per area this releasing must be performed. These variables might differ deeply among egg parasitoid species and crops worked. Therefore, these trials were carried out to evaluate the parasitism (%) in eggs of Anticarsia gemmatalis and Pseudoplusia includens after the release of different densities of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum. Field dispersal was also studied, in order to determine appropriate recommendations for the release of this parasitoid in soybean fields. The regression analysis between parasitism (%) and densities of the parasitoid indicated a quadratic effect for both A. gemmatalis and P. includens. The maximum parasitism within 24 h after the release was reached with densities of 25.6 and 51.2 parasitoids per host egg, respectively, for the two pests. Parasitism of T. pretiosum in eggs of P. includens decreased linearly as the distance of the pest eggs from the parasitoid release sites increased. For P. includens, the mean radius of T. pretiosum action and the area of parasitoid dispersal in the soybean crop were 8.01 m and 85.18 m2, respectively. We conclude that for a successful biological control program of lepidopteran pests using T. pretiosum in soybean fields, a density of 25.6 parasitoids per host egg, divided into 117 sites per hectare, should be used.  相似文献

The phenology of leaves and stages from immature sori to spore release were studied in natural populations of two perennial herbaceous ferns, Dryopteris affinis ssp. affinis and Polystichum aculeatum, for 2 years in Italy. The Generalized Additive Model for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) was used to predict a particular phenological event from the climatic variables. Both fern species are evergreen with leaf lifespan of 13–14 months in D. affinis ssp. affinis and 15–24 months in P. aculeatum. Their leaf production is seasonal with most flushed in spring. In D. affinis ssp. affinis the decaying of old leaves is sudden whereas in P. aculeatum it is gradual, and in both types the decaying is accelerated just as the new leaves emerge. Temperature is the best predictor for the development of sori and spore release. The end of spore release and leaf emergence are positively affected by temperature and negatively affected by rainfall and snow cover for P. aculeatum. An almost similar response to climatic factors of emergent and senescent leaves and their phenology supportsthe hypothesis that old leaves serve as nutrient storage organs for new leaf growth. Comparison the phenological patterns between the 2 years indicated that the time lapses between each phenological event were the same within seasons for D. affinis ssp. affinis but show some differences for P. aculeatum. We also hypothesize that endogenous factors may play an important role in the phenology of P. aculeatum.  相似文献

The release of sterilized codling moth enriches the animal community of the orchard. This enrichment leads to new situations also for the entomophagous species and may provide special possibilities in the use of entomophaga. Codling moth control by the sterility principle may provide certain entomophagous species with an extra food source, namely, the released moth and, possibly more important, the sterile eggs laid by these moths. This extra food may be detrimental to the sterility control because of certain predators of the adult codling moths (e.g.Vespula maculata L., other predatory insects and entomophagous birds). On the other hand, the extra food source may be advantageous. For example, sterilized moths, at the rate of release currently used in control programs, should deposit up to 5 to 10 million eggs per hectare per season. These eggs may produce 2,5 to 5 million adultTrichogramma parasites, assuming 2Trichogramma per egg and 75 % parasite mortality. Both inviable eggs of sterilized moths and gamma sterilized eggs proved to be reasonably satisfactory food for the larvae ofTrichogramma evanescens Westw. This parasite also attacked and developed in normal eggs ofAdoxophyes reticulana.Hbn. These results suggest that release of limited numbers ofTrichogramma parasites could be combined with release of sterile codling moths to provide improved control of this pest and to aid in the biological suppression of other injurious tortricids.
Résumé Lors de l'emploi des males stériles dans la lutte contre les insectes, la population du verger est enrichie par le lacher de Carpocapses. Les prédateurs peuvent diminuer le nombre des adultes lachés, mais les œufs stériles pondus par ces derniers sont aptes à enrichir la population de Trichogrammes, comme nous l'avons montré par nos expériences en laboratoire. Cette population peut être un complément à l'utilisation des males stériles dans la lutte contre le Carpocapse. Elle peut surtout être efficace dans la lutte biologique contre d'autres Tortricides.

The corn rootworm complex is the most damaging insect pest of corn (Zea mays L.). This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of whorl and pollen-shed stage applications of a granular formulation of Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin for control of adult western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera Le Conte). The effect of application time (whorl-stage, pollen-shed) and plant surface exposed (leaves and leaf collars; silks; leaves, leaf collars, and silks) on level of beetle fungal infection were investigated. In addition, the number of colony forming units of B. bassiana in the corn leaf collar area was quantified. In the three years (1998–2000) of the study, application of B. bassiana at whorl-stage did not significantly increase beetle fungal infection. Beauveria bassiana applied to plants at pollen-shed in 1998 resulted in a significant increase in beetle infection with 51% of beetles from treated plants infected and 6.0% from control plants. Similar applications at pollen-shed in 1999 and 2000 resulted in very low infection levels. Beauveria bassiana application at pollen-shed stage significantly increased the number of colony forming units per leaf collar during all years of the study. Beetle infection with B. bassiana did not differ consistently among plant surface to which beetles were exposed for either application. Increased fungal load in leaf collars was not correlated with increased levels of adult infection. Increased rates of B. bassiana and application when beetles are present on the plants are likely needed to significantly increase infection rates.  相似文献

Lixophaga diatraeae (Townsend) parasitized 20 to 78% ofDiatraea saccharalis (F) larval populations within 3 weeks after release. The flies (4 to 6 days old) did not migrate from the release area, but the progeny dispersed as much as 3 km into adjacent untreated areas within 5 generations. Progeny dispersal, apparently during the prelarviposition period, resulted in 100% parasitization ofD. saccharalis larvae in some plots. In 2 of the 3 tests, the host population decreased after the releases. Percentage damaged internodes increased with distance from the release site.

Functional responses of deutonymphs of the predatory mite,Allothrombium pulvinum Ewing, on eggs and adult females of two-spotted spider mite,Tetranychus urticae Koch, were determined in the laboratory. Predation experiments were conducted on lima bean leaf discs over a 24-h period at 25±2°C, 30–50% RH and 24L: 0D photoperiod. Prey densities ranged from 10 to 120T. urticae eggs per disc or 2 to 32 adult females per disc.Allothrombium pulvinum deutonymphs were more effective againstT. urticae eggs than its adult females. The role ofA. pulvinum deutonymphs in integrated and biological pest control is discussed.  相似文献

Amblyseius fallacis Garman has been selected for pyrethroid resistance and mass reared for experimental release as a biological control agent for tetranychid mites on a number of crops in Canada. Several releases of this predator onto apple and peach trees have failed to result in the establishment of A. fallacis, or in the biological control of Panonychus ulmi Koch. Here, we test the hypothesis that the change of host-plant at the time of release is a critical factor in the establishment of A. fallacis for biological control of P. ulmi. Functional and numerical response studies were undertaken on two populations of A. fallacis: a wild strain collected from the canopy foliage of an apple orchard near Vineland, Ontario; and a second strain reared on bean plants in a commercial insectary with Tetranychus urticae as prey. Each population consumed significantly more P. ulmi and produced significantly more eggs when on leaf disks from the plant species they were reared on, than on leaf disks from the novel host plant. A further experiment was conducted to determine if establishment and biological control of mass-reared A. fallacis could be affected by rearing a population for a short term on apple leaves prior to release on apple trees. Three release treatments were made into potted apple trees in a glasshouse, using predators commercially mass-reared on bean and T. urticae: A. fallacis released directly; A. fallacis reared in the laboratory for four weeks on bean and T. urticae; A. fallacis reared on apple leaves and T. urticae for four weeks. They were compared with a control treatment lacking predator release. Contrary to results of the functional and numerical response studies, no difference was observed between release treatments. All release treatments adding A. fallacis resulted in a similar, if limited, degree of biological control of P. ulmi. These results indicated that there may be short-term effects of host plant on the establishment of A. fallacis and biological control of P. ulmi, which in our study were observed as an initial reduction of the predatory response. However, in a test, the predators appeared to overcome these short-term effects and successfully established on the new host-plant to control P. ulmi.  相似文献

Determination of the potential and actual host range of a natural enemy is crucial before its importation and release for biological control. We studied some of the factors that are important in determining the physiological host range of insect parasitoids attacking lepidopteran hosts. Our experimental system consisted of novel host-parasitoid associations, with two New World pyralid stalk borers, Diatraea saccharalis and D. grandiosella; one Old World crambid borer, Ostrinia nubilalis as hosts; and three Old World microgastrine braconids, Cotesia chilonis, C. sesamiae, and C. flavipes as parasitoids. Experiments on the chronology of encapsulation of the parasitoid progeny by host hemocytes indicated that lepidopteran stemborers that are taxonomically, behaviorally and ecologically very similar differ in their ability to encapsulate a parasitoid species. D. saccharalis encapsulated C. flavipes sometimes, whereas D. grandiosella consistently encapsulated C. sesamiae and C. flavipes. C. chilonis was not encapsulated by either Diatraea host. If encapsulation occurred it did not start until four days after parasitization and continued during the following days. O. nubilalis was an unsuitable host for all three parasitoid species; parasitoid eggs were killed within 24 hours of parasitization. O. nubilalis had nearly twice as many hemocytes present in the hemolymph compared to the Diatraea species. In many of the host-parasitoid combinations, there was an initial increase of hemocyte number soon after parasitization, which was not due to mechanical damage at oviposition. There was no correlation between total numbers of hemocytes present in the host hemolymph and the observed encapsulation levels. By understanding the encapsulation response we may be able to make better predictions about the host range of a parasitoid species before its release as a biological control agent.  相似文献

In this study, we used the specialist egg parasitoid Trichogramma galloi Zucchi, 1988 (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) to test whether development over multiple generations on a factitious host would later influence performance on the target pest. We also investigated possible adaptations to laboratory rearing conditions by monitoring over 50 and 46 generations life history traits of T. galloi populations maintained on the natural [Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr., 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)] and factitious host [Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller, 1879) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)], respectively. We detected a possible sign of adaptation to rearing conditions in early generations on the emergence of the population maintained on the natural host. We also verified a reduction in fecundity and emergence of parasitoids maintained on the factitious host when fitness was evaluated on the natural host, confirming the prediction that the use of factitious hosts can lower fitness on the target pest. The importance of these results for the effectiveness of biological control programs is discussed.  相似文献

Freshwater turtle hatchlings primarily use visual cues for orientation while dispersing from nests; however, hatchlings rapidly develop a relationship between a sun or geomagnetic compass and a dispersal target that allows them to maintain an established direction of movement when target habitats are not visible. We examined dispersal patterns of hatchling snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) and Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) dispersing in large arenas in a mowed field and in dense corn. The dispersal of three categories of hatchlings were examined: (1) naïve individuals (no previous dispersal experience), (2) arena‐experienced (limited dispersal experience in arenas in natural habitat), and (3) natural‐experienced hatchling Blanding's turtles (captured after extensive experience dispersing W in natural habitats toward wetlands). Experienced hatchlings were assigned to treatments consisting of having a magnet or a non‐magnetic aluminum sham or nothing glued to their anterior carapace before release in the corn arena. Dispersal patterns of naïve hatchlings of both species were strongly directional in the field arena with visible target horizons and primarily random in the corn arena where typical target horizons were blocked. When released in corn, dispersal patterns were similar for arena‐experienced hatchlings with magnets or shams attached and differed from their prior dispersal headings in the field arena as naïve hatchlings. Natural‐experienced hatchling Blanding's turtles with and without magnets were able to accurately maintain their prior headings to the WNW while dispersing in the field or corn arenas (i.e., the presence of a magnet did not disrupt their ability to maintain their prior heading). Based on the assumption that no other type of compass exists in hatchlings, we conclude that they were not using a geomagnetic compass, but by default were using sun compass orientation to maintain dispersal headings in dense corn where no typical target habitats were visible.  相似文献

Teratocytes are specialized cells released by parasitoid wasps into their hosts. They are known for producing regulatory molecules that aid the development of immature parasitoids. We have recently reported the primary structures of cystine-rich peptides, including some containing inhibitor cystine knot (ICK) motifs, produced by teratocytes of the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). ICKs are known for their stability and diverse biological functions. In this study, we produced four putative ICK peptides from the teratocytes of C. flavipes using solid-phase peptide synthesis or recombinant expression in E. coli, and investigated their functions on host immune modulation as well their potential to impair the development of two lepidopterans after ingestion of the peptides. In addition, the peptides were assayed against pathogens and human cells. The peptides did not influence total hemocyte count but suppressed cellular immunity, detectable as a reduction of hemocyte encapsulation (CftICK-I, CftICK-II, CftICK-III) and spread indexes (CftICK-IV) in the host. None of the peptides influenced the activities of prophenoloxidase and phenoloxidase in the hemolymph of larval Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). CftICK-I and CftICK-II with previously unknown function showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans but were non-toxic to human cells. CftICK-I, CftICK-II, and CftICK-III increased larval mortality and reduced leaf consumption of D. saccharalis, a permissive host for C. flavipes. The CftICK-III also increased larval mortality and reduced leaf consumption of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a non-permissive host for C. flavipes. This study highlights biological functions and biotechnological potential of ICK peptides from the teratocytes of C. flavipes.  相似文献

We assessed the reproductive responses of adult female Iphiseius degenerans and Neoseiulus teke to increasing density of three stages of their prey, Mononychellus tanajoa, on cassava leaf discs under laboratory conditions. The oviposition rates increased with number of prey consumed per predator per day with a maximum of approximately two eggs per day for I. degenerans and four eggs per day for N. teke. The oviposition rate of N. teke was higher when consuming eggs than other prey stages. Neoseiulus teke was more efficient than I. degenerans in converting consumed prey into egg production. The data were adequately described by simple mathematical models.  相似文献

We evaluated how manyTrichogramma nubilale should be released at a single location to controlOstrinia nubilalis in sweet corn. Six 8.6×16 m plots received 18.4 to 2 090 ΦΦT. nubilale/SAI when plants were in the mid to late whorl stage, where SAI, surface area index, is the plant surface area/m2. To evaluate the potential control by our releases, we exposed laboratory-rearedO. nubilalis egg masses to the released parasitoids at 4 times after the release. When an egg mass was parasitized byT. nubilale, 75.7% of the eggs in the egg mass were parasitized. We developed an equation to estimate the percent of egg masses that a single female was expected to parasitize in a day (efficiency of parasitism) and female disappearance (death and dispersal) rates, if both were constant during our experiment. The exponential disappearance rate was −0.52±0.03 day−1, which implied that 40% of the remaining ΦΦ disappeared per day. The efficiency of parasitism was 0.050% parasitism/Φ/SAI/day, which implied that at least 351,000 ΦΦ/ha would be needed to achieve 90% parasitism. Clearly, forT. nubilale to be a successful biological control agent, efficiency of parasitism must be increased and disappearance rates must be reduced.   相似文献

Tetraphleps galchanoides Ghauri (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) nymphs were collected from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) Adelges tsugae Annand (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) infested Tsuga sp. in Baoxing, Sichuan, China. First and second stage nymphs collected from foliage shipped from China; were reared to adults and tested for feeding rates and host preferences. They were reared at 5, 8, 12, and 15 ± 1 °C from November to December, January to March, April, and May to June, respectively, in the quarantine laboratory at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. At 8 °C, development time was 15, 20, and 40 days for the N-III, IV, and V nymphal stages, respectively. Adult males lived 83 days with a range of 21–147 days. A single adult female lived for 21 days. At 5 °C, second stage T. galchanoides nymphs consumed 0.8 HWA nymphs per day, and 2.0 HWA nymphs per day at the N-V stage. At 8 °C, consumption of HWA nymphs ranged from 1.3 to 3.4 nymphs per day for the N-III to N-V stages, respectively. Adult T. galchanoides consumed more HWA eggs than HWA adults, pine bark adelgid (PBA) Pineus strobi (Hartig) (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) adults, and eggs in no-choice tests. In choice tests with HWA eggs and PBA eggs, more HWA eggs were eaten. Adult and nymph body measurements are presented for determination of nymphal instars.  相似文献

The goal of this work was to assess the suitability of two artificial diets for egg laying and development of Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner, Trichogrammatoidea annulata De Santis, and Trichogramma bruni Nagaraja (all Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Additionally, the quality of wasps reared in vitro was compared with those reared in vivo. The ‘standard’ diet consisted of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) pupal holotissues (65%), chicken egg yolk (18%), fetal bovine serum (8.5%), lactalbumin hydrolysate (8.5%), and anticontaminants (0.3%). The ‘modified’ diet differed from the standard one only in the D. saccharalis pupal holotissues, that were replaced with Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) ones. Females of the three trichogrammatid species laid eggs in artificial eggs containing any artificial medium, but the modified one received more eggs. Although the standard diet was accepted for oviposition by the three wasp species, no development occurred. On the modified diet, only T. atopovirilia was able to develop to adult emergence. Adult F1 were of a quality that was similar to insects reared in vivo.  相似文献

Biological control ofstalkboring Lepidoptera often has beensuccessful when the braconid parasitoids in thegenera Cotesia and Apanteles werethe natural enemies of choice. Constraints inusing these gregarious, koinobiont,endoparasitoids have included host suitability,especially as influenced by the host's immuneresponse. The suitability of a novel host, theNew World stalkborer Diatraeaconsiderata (Lepidoptera:Pyralidae), for parasitization by three OldWorld braconids, Cotesia chilonis, C. flavipes and C. sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), wascompared to the suitability of another NewWorld novel host, Diatraea saccharalis. D. considerata was less suitable for allthree parasitoids than was D.saccharalis. The frequent occurrence ofparasitized D. considerata larvae thatdid not yield parasitoids, or pupate within anappropriate time interval, suggestedencapsulation of the parasitoid progeny, whichwas visible through the host cuticle. Giventhe suitability results, these threeparasitoids would not be appropriate candidatesfor use against D. considerata. Theresults also have important implications forthe narrow host range expressed by theseparasitoids.  相似文献
