Community structure of macrobenthos in the industrialized, tidal Neches River was studied 12 years after implementation of phase III of the Clean Water Act (CWA). Result were compared with a 1971–72 study conducted before implementation of the CWA and a 1984–85 study conducted after implementation of phases I & II of the CWA. The permitted BOD waste load decreased 93% between the 1971–72 and 1984–85 studies, then increased 19% between 1984–85 and the current study. A total of 50 taxa were collected during the 1971–72 study, 104 during the 1984–85 study, and 110 during the current study. Numbers of taxa per collection at each station increased by a factor of at least two between the 1971–72 and 1984–85 studies and were significantly different at the 0.0001 level. Numbers of taxa per collection at each station were not significantly different between the 1984–85 and the current study (p=0.286). Minimum collection densities in 1984–85 were higher than maximum densities in 1971–72 and were significantly different at the 0.0001 level. Collection densities were not significantly different between the 1984–85 study and the current study (p=0.374). Shannon's annual and station collection diversity values significantly increased (p=<0.05) between the 1971–72 and 1984–85 studies, but not between the 1984–85 and the current study (p=>0.05). Dendrograms of Sorenson's similarity index between all pairs of stations were more alike between the 1971–72 and the current study than between the 1984–85 and the current study. Evidence of some organic enrichment at the upper stations was indicated by the dominance of Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and depressed oxygen concentrations. Environmental quality in the river has greatly improved since implementation of the CWA in 1972. Most of the improvments were due to phases I & II of the CWA, with little apparent change since implementation of phase III.  相似文献

Primarily as a result of road salting, the water masses ofLake Svinsjøen, a small meromictic lake in southeasternNorway, have been subject to great changes in salinity duringthe period 1947–1995. The greatest change in saltconcentration has occurred in the upper part of themonimolimnion (depth 10–15 m) where mean conductivityincreased 104.2 per cent, from 143 to 292 S cm–1. Inthe upper mixolimnion (depth 0-5 m), mean conductivity rosefrom 130 to 238 S cm–1 during the same period. Theions responsible for the salinity changes were Na+ andCl from de-icing salts, and Ca2+ and Cl fromsalts used to keep down dust from roads. Further sources ofCa2+ are the road asphalt and increased weathering andleaching of the lime-rich rocks caused by acid precipitation,the main source of the additional inputs of SO tothe lake. The salinity changes caused major changes inmeromictic stability, S . In the period1947-1966, S increased by 24 g cm cm–2,and the maximum level of meromictic stability, 125 gcm–2, was found in 1966. As a result of higher rate ofsalt accumulation in the upper part of the monimolimnion andin the mixolimnion, S decreased by 30 g cmcm–2 during the period 1966-1991, and a simultaneousrise in the chemocline took place. In the period 1991-1995 anadditional decrease of 26 g cm cm–2 occurred. Continuedectogenic inputs of salts through processes typical of thetime period investigated will in future further weaken thelake's meromictic stability, and may cause the demise ofmeromixis in Lake Svinsjøen, a development which may haveimportant implications for primary productivity of thelake.  相似文献

Nutrient limitation of primary production was experimentally assessed using an in situ bioassay technique in the Quebrada Salto, a third-order tropical stream draining the northern foothills of the Cordillera Central in Costa Rica. Bioassays employed artificial substrata enriched with nutrients that slowly diffuse through an agar-sand matrix (Pringle & Bowers, 1984). Multiple comparisons of regression coefficients, describing chlorophyll-a accrual through time for different nutrient treatments, revealed positive micronutrient effect(s). Micronutrient treatment combinations (Fe, B, Mn, Zn, Co, Mo, EDTA), supplemented with and without nitrate and phosphate, exhibited significantly greater chlorophyll-a accrual over all other treatments (P < 0.05), supporting over three times that of the control after 14-d of substratum colonization. Neither of the major nutrients (N or P) produced a significant stimulation, although the N treatment displayed 50% more chlorophyll-a than the control after 14-d. Similarly, Si, EDTA, and Si + N + P treatments did not exhibit chlorophyll-a response curves that were significantly different from the control. During the experiment, mean NH4-N and (NO2 + NO3)-N concentrations in the Salto were 2.0 µM (28.6 µg · l–1) and 7.2 µM (100.2 µg · l –1), respectively. High concentrations of PO4-P ( = 2.0 µM; 60.9 µg · l–1) and TP ( = 3.0 µM; 94.0 µg · l–1) were also found, and consequently low molar N:P ratios = 4.7). Despite the potential for N limitation in the system, both N and P appear to be at growth saturating levels. This may be due to micronutrient limitation and/or light limitation of periphyton growth in densely shaded upstream portions of the stream.  相似文献

An account is given of the chemistry and floristic composition of stream sites in a small catchment (1.2 km2) with extensive waste from disused lead mines in the upper part of the catchment. One stream sequence provided a gradient of aquatic zinc levels from very high ( = 25.6 mg l–1 after passing through a filter) to relatively low ( = 1.2 mg l–1). There was a negative correlation between the number of photosynthetic species present in a reach and the logarithm of the concentration of zinc. The flora at the site with the highest level of zinc was nevertheless comparatively rich, with 25 species, as opposed to a maximum of 41 species in any reach with elevated zinc. A reach in an unpolluted tributary had 61 species, 11 of which were absent at all other reaches. A discussion is included of the extent to which the various floristic changes observed are likely to be a direct result of changes in zinc levels rather than of correlated changes such as flow regime.  相似文献

Quasi-elastic laser light scattering has been used to investigate the size and dispersity of synaptosomes and synaptic vesicles isolated from optic lobes of the squid Loligo pealei. Synaptosomal fractions were highly polydisperse ( ) and the mean diameter ( ) ranged from 0.5–2.0 m. Size distribution histograms yielded two major components — smaller particles ( ) and a larger group of particles ( ). The heterogeneity of the synaptosomal particles detected in solution is in agreement with published data obtained using electron microscopy. Purified synaptic vesicle fractions also yielded complex particle size distribution data. A component with a mean diameter in the range 150–250 nm was detected, though a smaller particle ( ) dominated the scattering signal. This smaller particle closely resembles in size the electron lucent vesicles seen in the majority of squid optic lobe nerve terminals when examined by electron microscopy. Osmotically-induced shirnkage and swelling of the synptosomes was detected. Depolarization by veratridine (1.0×10–4 M) did not result in a detectable change in the size of synaptosomal particles.  相似文献

Chlorophyll-nutrient relationships in North Island lakes (New Zealand)   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1  
A model for the prediction of chlorophyll a in the near surface waters (1 m) of North Island lakes was developed using data from the literature and our own study of 12 North Island lakes. Annual geometric mean concentrations of chlorophyll a, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were used since no distinct growing season was discernable. Annual mean ratios of total nitrogen to total phosphorus in the near surface waters ranged between 10 and 59 (by weight). Strong correlations were obtained between log-transformed values of chlorophyll a and total nitrogen (r2 = 0.53, n = 16), chlorophyll a and total phosphorus (r2 = 0.71, n = 21), and between total nitrogen and total phosphorus (r2 = 0.69, n = 16). However, after correcting for the high interdependency between total nitrogen and total phosphorus, only total phosphorus was found to be important in predicting chlorophyll concentrations. Much of the variance in the chlorophyll-phosphorus relation was attributable to differences in mean lake depth. Lakes with mean depths less than 11 m had significantly more chlorophyll a per unit of total phosphorus ( = 0.54 µg · µg–1, SE = 0.05, n = 6) than lakes of greater mean depth ( = 0.17 µg · µg–1, SE = 0.02, n = 14). When the effect of mean depth was taken into account, 89% of the variance in chlorophyll a was explained compared with 71% for the simple linear regression on total phosphorus alone.  相似文献

Macrofauna of seagrass community in the five Lakshadweep atolls were studied and compared. The associated epifaunal and infaunal taxa comprising nine major taxonomic groups, showed significant differences in the total number of individuals (1041–8411 m–2) among sites and habitats. The density of macrofauna was directly related to mean macrophytic biomass (405–895 g wet wt. m–2). The fauna was dominated by epifaunal polychaetes, amphipods and isopods in the vegetated areas. When compared with the density of nearby unvegetated areas , seagrass meadows harbour a denser and richer macroinvertebrate assemblage .  相似文献

Seasonal dynamics of macrobenthos were studied at five stations located at depths of 10–60 min in the Far East State Marine Reserve (southern Peter the Great Bay) during 1984–1987. Sampling was conducted at stations once per season. Stable seasonal fluctuations of the population density and the biomass in basic taxonomic groups were found. As a rule, the quantitative parameters were augmented in spring and summer, and decreased in fall and winter. This was caused, first of all, by summer fluctuations of the number of small and short-lived species of polychaetes and bivalve molluscs. The amplitude of fluctuations decreased with increasing depth. Variation in the quantitative parameters was significant at the community level only at the most shallow-water stations. It was assumed that this phenomenon might be caused by the seasonal consumption of macrobenthos by bottom fish and by the periodicity of detritus supply to the bottom from the water column with a background of varying environmental temperature parameters and of mass settling of benthic larvae. The seasonal changes in parameters began and ceased earlier in 1986–1987 than 1984–1985, which was related to an appreciable decrease in water temperature in 1986. During the period of study, an increasing trend of parameters, apparently part of a long-term cycle, was recorded both for individual groups and for entire communities, and was the most appreciable at greater depths (47–60 m).  相似文献

During the period of 1988–2000, three alien gammarid species, i.e. Gammarus tigrinus Sexton, 1939, Pontogammarus robustoides G. O. Sars, 1894, and Dikerogammarus haemobaphes (Eichwald, 1841) were recorded in the Odra estuary. This study, the first record of G. tigrinus and P. robustoides in Poland, focuses on the distribution, abundance, and biomass as well as on population structure of the three new species found in the coastal zone of the estuary. G. tigrinus and P. robustoides were first sampled in the Szczecin Lagoon (mid-part of the estuary) in 1988. The densities of both species were high from the time they were first recorded and exceeded 10 000 ind. m–2, while the biomass was 25 and 140 g m–2, respectively. G.tigrinus occurred at higher densities in northern and eastern parts of the Lagoon, while P. robustoides was particularly abundant in the south-eastern part, most heavily affected by River Odra discharge. In 1999, the third gammarid, D. haemobaphes, was recorded in the southern part of the estuary. Both in 1999 and 2000, the species was found in qualitative samples (dredge collections of Dreissena polymorpha) taken from the western branch of the river. As estimated from quantitative samples, densities and biomass in the eastern branch were rather low and did not exceed 150 ind. m–2 and 2.7 g m–2, respectively. The Szczecin Lagoon population of G. tigrinus produces at least two generations within a year: a summer one and an overwintering one. The latter is dominated by older and larger specimens. The species may reproduce in the Lagoon from April until November.  相似文献

Magnitude and long-term periodicity of summer-autumn blooms of the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, Nodularia spumigena, were characterized for hyposaline Pyramid Lake, Nevada, from Landsat MSS band 3 film negatives. Predicted lakewide mean chlorophyll a concentrations for Landsat overpasses during the July–October Nodularia bloom season ranged from 27 to 72 mg m–3 with an overall average concentration of 32 ± 7 mg m–3 between 1972 and 1986. Nodularia blooms were usually annual events. Blooms were not observed on Landsat images in only three of 15 years (1973, 1980, 1982) and midsummer calcium carbonate whitings occurred in two of these years (1973, 1980). Magnitude of Nodularia blooms was highly variable among years and very large blooms, where maximum mean chlorophyll a concentration exceeded one standard deviation of the 15 year overall mean (> 39 mg m–3) appeared in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1984, 1985 and 1986. Very large early-July blooms always occurred during or following years of above average fluvial discharge to Pyramid Lake (1984–1986) and were associated with meromixis produced by the large influx of freshwater.Several problems arise using Landsat remote sensing to estimate magnitude and periodicity of scum-forming blue-green algal blooms. These complications may reduce accuracy and precision of phytoplankton biomass estimates made from Landsat images. Nevertheless, Landsat remote sensing enabled us to quantify relative bloom magnitude with limited collection of ground-based data and at a large-scale temporal and spatial resolution not possible using alternative methodologies.  相似文献

Quantitative substrate samples were collected at a newly constructed gravel bar habitat in the Tombigbee River, Mississippi, to characterize oligochaete (naididae and tubificidae) species richness and community composition. A total of 28 species of naidid and tubificid worms were indentified during the three-year study; Nais pardalis, Dero nivea, D. obtusa, Pristina aequiseta (naididae), and Branchiura sowerbyi (Tubificidae) were dominant. In June, 1985, three months after construction, 30 samples yielded seven taxa of oligochaetes; naidid and tubificid densities (± standard deviation) were 12.9 (± 29.7) and 10.1 m–2 (±39.6), respectively. In October, 1985, 20 taxa were identified, and naidid and tubificid densities were 387.9 (± 300.5 and 22.9 m–2 (± 50.7), respectively. Tubificid densities were highest in the spring, except during the first year, and naidid densities showed their highest densities in the fall during all years. Dominance changed from Nais pardalis and Dero nivea during the first year to Pristina aequiseta and D. nivea during the last year. The naididae, which typically inhabit gravel, exhibited more uniform colonization patterns than did the tubificidae. Comparatively low densities characterized the oligochaete community during the first year and high naidid densities during the last. Because this gravel bar is relatively isolated from similar substrates, and since oligochaetes disperse only via drift or crawling, colonization processes have been slow.  相似文献

Photosynthetic activity by phytoplankton was measured during the ice-free seasons of 1984, 1985 and 1987 using the 14C radioassay in high altitude Emerald Lake (California). Relative quantum yield (B) and light-saturated chlorophyll-specific carbon uptake (Pm B) were calculated from the relationship of light and photosynthesis fitted to a hyperbolic tangent function. Temporal changes in Pm B showed no regular pattern. Seasonal patterns of B generally had peaks in the summer and autumn. Phytoplankton biomass (as measured by chlorophyll a) and light-saturated carbon uptake (Pm) had peaks in the summer and autumn which were associated with vertical mixing. Estimates of mean daily carbon production were similar among the three years: 57 mg C m–2 2 d–1 in 1984, 70 mg C m–2 2 d–1 in 1985 and 60 mg C m–2 d–1 in 1987. Primary productivity in Emerald Lake is low compared to other montane lakes of California and similar to high-altitude or high-latitude lakes in other regions.  相似文献

In a randomly selected sample of 88 men and 115 women, aged 23–27 years from Denmark, maximal oxygen uptake ( O2max), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) in four muscle groups and physical activity were studied. The O2max was 48.0 ml · min–1 kg–1 and 39.6 ml · min–1 · kg–1 for the men and the women, respectively. The MVC was 10% lower than in a comparable group of Danes of the same age and height studied 35 years ago. Only in men was sports activity directly related to O2max (ml · min–1 · kg–1; r=0.31, P<0.01). The MVC of the knee extensors was related to O2max in the men (r=0.31, P<0.01), but there was no relationship between the other measurements of MVC and O2max. In the women O2max (ml · min–1 · kg–1) was only related to body size, i.e. body mass index, percentage body fat and body mass [(r= –0.47, –0.48 (both P<0.001) and –0.34. (P<0.01), respectively)]. There were differences in O2max in the men, according to education and occupation. Blue collar workers and subjects attending vocational or trade schools in 1983 had lower O2max and more of them were physically inactive. In the women differences were also found, but there was no clear pattern among the groups. More of the women participated regularly in sports activity, but more of the men were very active compared to the women.  相似文献

Macrozoobenthos of the ultraoligotrophic Lake 95 (61°N, 46°W, 8 ha, zmax=18 m, ) is composed of about 14 taxa dominated by 12 Chironomidae species. Abundance, life cycle, biomass and production were estimated for the six dominant taxa. Abundance declined fromca. 4150 at 2.5 m depth toca. 1400 ind m–2 at 16 m depth and averagedca. 3200 ind m–2 on a lakewide basis. By numbers,Heterotrissocladius changi andH. oliveri dominated the average fauna.H. changi was common at the 2.5 m and 5 m depth stations, whereasH. oliveri dominated from 5 m depth downwards. Chironomids showed mainly a 1-yr life cycle, but apparently bothHeterotrissocladius species had two contemporary cohorts with emergence in midsummer and late autumn/early spring, respectively. Average annual ratio was 4.2 and 4.6 forH. oliveri andH. changi, respectively. Annual production varied from 0.3 g ash-free dry weight (AFDW) m–2 y–1 at 16 m depth to 1.6 g AFDW m–2 y–1 at 2.5 m depthH. changi contributed 45%, fiveMicropsectra spp. 17% andH. oliveri 15% to total average production, which on a lakewide basis wasca. 1.1 g AFDW or 25 kJ m–2 y–1. Lake 95 thus belongs at the very low end of measured lake zoobenthic productions, which range from 10 kJ m–2 y–1 in Arctic lakes toca. 1600 kJ m–2 y–1 in highly eutrophic shallow lakes.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal distribution, abundance and production of macroinvertebrate communities were estimated over two years in a fifth-order section of the Widawka River. Discharge of this river has been increased artificially by coal mine water inputs. Additionally, during the second year, one of the highest discharges of the current 20-year period was recorded. Chironomidae were co-dominant in macrobenthos, both in a straight reach (WIA) and in a meandering site (WIB). More mosaic habitats resulted in higher densities of midges, reaching 6215 ind.m–2 in year 1 and 1141 ind.m–2 in year 2 at WIA, while at WIB 896 densities were ind.m–2 and 257 ind.m–2, respectively. Flooding affected the distribution and abundance of the chironomid assemblages. Recolonization by psammophilous Polypedilum began after the various microhabitats were buried with sand. Chironomid production was estimated on a species-specific basis for the dominant taxa. In year 1 (mean annual water temperature 10.0° C) chironomid production was 12.4 g dry wt m–2 yr–1 1 at WIA and 1.9 g dry wt m–2 yr–1 at WIB. These values sharply decreased in year 2 (mean annual water temperature 9.8° C) reaching 1.9 g dry wt m–2 yr–1 at WIA and 0.4 g dry wt m–2 yr–1 at WIB, as effects of the high spate.  相似文献

Summary The requirement for Na+ and Cl in the bathing media to obtain a maximal HCO 3 secretory flux ( ) across isolated short-circuitedAmphiuma duodenum was investigated using titration techniques and ion substitution. Upon substitution of media Na+ with choline, HCO 3 secretion was markedly reduced. Replacement of media Cl produced a smaller reduction of . The presence of Cl enhanced HCO 3 secretion only if Na+ was also in the media. Elevation of media Na+ or Cl in the presence of the other ion produced a saturable increase of . In the presence of Na+, Cl stimulated when added to the mucosal but not the serosal medium. In the presence of Cl, Na+ elevated when added to the serosal but not the mucosal medium. The ability of mucosal Cl to stimulate was not apparently dependent on mucosal Na+. Simultaneous addition of 10mm Cl to the Na+-free mucosal medium and 10mm Na+ to the Cl-free serosal medium stimulated above levels produced by serosal Na+ alone. In conclusion, intestinal HCO 3 secretion required mucosal Cl and serosal Na+ and did not involve mucosal NaCl cotransport. The results are consistent with a mucosal Cl absorptive mechanism in series with parallel basolateral Na+–H+ and Cl–HCO 3 exchange mechanisms.  相似文献

The annual reproductive success of Coregonus albula and C. lavaretus in some polluted and clean areas of the central parts of L. Päijänne was estimated in 1981–90 on the basis of occurrence of larvae in shore seine and seine net samples after the ice melted. In polluted areas (0–5 km from Kaipola paper mill) larvae of coregonids were found only occasionally. In semipolluted areas (5–15 km from the paper mill) the densities of larvae were usually less than 0.1 ind m–2. In clean areas the mean densities of larvae ranged from 0.45 to 5.34 inds m–2. A relatively high reproductive success of vendace was observed in 1984–85, moderate success in 1982–83 and low success in 1986–90. The larvae of whitefish were scarce in both polluted and semipolluted areas and their density ranged from 0.01 to 0.15 ind m–2 in clean shores. The highest density was observed in 1989. In spite of the improvement of the quality of water in the area in the 1980s, the reproductive success of coregonids is still low in a great part of the basin which may depend on adverse oxygen conditions of the hypolimnion and sediment and the toxic effects of the effluents.  相似文献

An early successional wetland complex on a reclaimed surface coal mine in southern Illinois was studied 1985–1987. Seasonally, biomass was low, with above-ground values of 10–210g m–2 and below-ground biomass of 1.5–2435 g m–2. Biomass peaked in spring and did not vary much throughout the remainder of the growing season. Stem densities were high (179–1467 m–2) because large numbers of seedlings became established as falling water levels exposed large areas of mudflats. Fluctuating water levels led to a lack of community zonation. Species diversity (H) was low to moderate over all sites with diversity values ranging between 1.86 and 3.27.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifera were collected in the Rhône prodelta (Gulf of Lions, Mediterranean Sea), an enriched zone with high organic matter content. In June 2005, sediment cores were sampled at depths ranging from 20 to 100 m. Four distinct foraminiferal assemblages were determined in the study area, reflecting the geographical distribution of the impact of river supply. The living foraminiferal faunas present a typical picture, with strongly impoverished faunas composed exclusively of stress-tolerant taxa (Fursenkoina fusiformis, Bulimina aculeata, Leptohyalis scottii, and Adelosina longirostra) in the immediate vicinity of the river mouth. This assemblage is well adapted to a high input of continental organic matter and a minimum oxygen penetration depth into the sediment. To the southwest, under the main corridor followed by the river plume, high organic input with a dominantly terrestrial signature (more refractory) may be stressful for many taxa which need organic matter of a more labile quality. In this area, Nonion scaphum, Nonionella turgida and Rectuvigerina phlegeri are present in low densities. On the edge of this area, these taxa show much higher densities. A greater proportion of marine organic carbon could explain their increasing abundances in this area. Towards the east and towards the deepest stations, in the outer part of the enriched zone, biodiversity increases. Faunas at these stations have intermediate densities and contain a number of taxa (Cassidulina carinata, Epistominella vitrea, Valvulineria bradyana, Nonionella iridea/bradyi) at the deepest stations; Bolivina dilatata/spathulata and Textularia porrecta at the eastern stations) that seem to benefit from more marine organic matter. The comparison of geochemical measurements and foraminiferal data strongly suggests that the spatial distribution of foraminifera in the Rhône prodelta is mainly governed by the quality and the quantity of organic matter reaching the sediment–water interface. Since bottom waters are well oxygenated (215–260 µmol/L), and oxygen penetration into the sediment is less than 1 cm at all stations, benthic ecosystem oxygenation appears to have only a minor impact on regional differences in faunal distribution.  相似文献
