Palmar dermatoglyphics and flexion creases of 108 male and 65 female patients diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus have been analysed. The control population consists of 536 males and 234 females from the same population. Palmar flexion creases were analysed according to the method suggested by Bali and Chaube ('71). The flexion creases of diabetic patients and the control population are significantly different. The differences between main line formulae in diabetes and controls are significant among males. The differences between C-line types of patients and controls are significant among both sexes. Axial triradii are significant among female patients and controls. The patterns in the interdigital areas IV and II are significantly lower among male and female patients respectively from their controls.  相似文献

The study included 2300 healthy couples and their healthy newborns delivered vaginally from singleton, normal term (37-42 weeks) pregnancies in Sibenik, Zadar and Split (Croatia). Both fathers and mothers of male newborns were older and had a higher weight than those of female newborns (p < 0.05). Gestational age and birth weight were higher in male than female newborns (p < 0.001). Increasing maternal pregravid weight led to increasing birth weight of both male and female newborns (p < 0.001). Furthermore, increasing maternal height and body mass index resulted in increasing birth weight of male and female newborns (p < 0.001). Thus, the fathers and mothers of male infants were older than those of female infants (p < 0.05), and increasing pre-gravid body weight, body height and body mass index were associated with a higher birth weight in both male and female newborns.  相似文献

Sixteen multiparous Barbary macaque females with newborns were studied over a 16 month period within the context of their naturally formed group. Analysis of their social behavior revealed 1) triadic interactions involving focal females, their newborns, and other group members occurred mainly with other females; and 2) mothers with female newborns interacted mainly with females of their own matriline, while mothers with male newborns interacted mainly with nonmatriline females. Observed in two successive birth seasons, this pattern indicates that partners of maternal interactions chose each other according to the sex of the newborn. Measures of distance from the mother also reflected differences between infants of different sex. At about five months of age, female infants were observed close to their mothers significantly more often than males. This finding follows the pattern of a sex-specific infant socialization process which integrates female infants into the network of their matrilines and male infants into the broader group. This sex-specific integration pattern is interpreted as supporting female philopatry and male dispersal. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We aimed to investigate the potential hazardous effects of prenatal and/or postnatal exposure to 1800 MHz GSM-like radiofrequency radiation (RFR) on the blood chemistry and lipid peroxidation levels of infant rabbits. A total of 72 New Zealand female and male white rabbits aged 1-month were used. Thirty-six female and 36 male were divided into four groups which were composed of nine infants: (i) Group 1 were the sham exposure (control), (ii) Group 2 were exposed to RFR, 15 min daily for 7 days in the prenatal period (between 15th and 22nd days of the gestational period) (prenatal exposure group). (iii) Group 3 were exposed to RFR 15 min/day (14 days for male, whereas 7 days for female) after they reached 1-month of age (postnatal exposure group). (iv) Group 4 were exposed to RFR for 15 min daily during 7 days in the prenatal period (between 15th and 22nd days of the gestational period) and 15 min/day (14 days for male, whereas 7 days for female) after they reached 1-month of age (prenatal and postnatal exposure group). Results showed that serum lipid peroxidation level in both female and male rabbits changed due to the RFR exposure. However, different parameters of the blood biochemistry were affected by exposure in male and female infants. Consequently, the whole-body 1800 MHz GSM-like RFR exposure may lead to oxidative stress and changes on some blood chemistry parameters. Studies on RFR exposure during prenatal and postnatal periods will help to establish international standards for the protection of pregnants and newborns from environmental RFR.  相似文献

In rodents, where chemical signals play a particularly important role in determining intersexual interactions, various studies have shown that male behavior and physiology is sensitive to female odor cues. Here we examined the effects of brief (1 min) and more prolonged (60 min) preexposure to the odors of a novel estrous female on the behavioral and hormonal responses of sexually experienced and inexperienced male mice, Mus musculus, to subsequent predator (cat and weasel) odor exposure and potential predator risk. Brief, but not prolonged, preexposure to the odors of an estrous female decreased the aversion and avoidance responses of male mice to cat odor in a Y-maze preference test, with the extent of responses being affected by a males prior sexual experience. Similarly, brief, but not prolonged, preexposure to female odors markedly attenuated the analgesic responses elicited in male mice by weasel odor. Brief exposure to a novel estrous female by itself had no significant immediate effects on either corticosterone or testosterone levels in the males. However, brief, but not prolonged, preexposure to the odors of an estrous female attenuated the marked increase in corticosterone and decrease in testosterone that were induced in males by exposure to weasel odor. The decreases in aversive responses to, and effects of, predator odor exposure that are induced by brief exposure to a novel estrous female may reflect a greater risk taking and boldness in males that could directly facilitate access to an immediately, and possibly transiently, available novel sexually receptive female.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess birth weight of healthy newborns from the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County, Croatia. Birth weights of healthy newborns, born at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Hospital Center "Zagreb" in the year 2001, were included into analysis. Since there were only few newborns in the 22nd-27th week of gestation, they were excluded from the study. Small number of data points was also noticed in 28th-36th week of gestation, and was supplemented with the data from the years 2000, 2002 and 2003. The method of analysis used in this study was described by Altman and Chitty (Br. J. Obstet. Gynaecol., 101 (1994) 29). After the application of well defined exclusion criteria, the final sample consisted of 4252 newborns. Percentile values for the four groups of newborns (male gender-primipara, male gender-multipara, female gender-primipara, female gender-multipara) were defined, yielding highest birth weight values in the male gender-multipara group (50th percentile of 40th gestational week was 3551.3 g), while female gender-primipara newborns were the lightest among the four sub-samples studied (50th percentile of 40th gestational week was 3399.9 g). New percentile values for percentile curves plotting are presented here and recommended for use in the clinical practice.  相似文献

CLEARY, MARGOT P., AND FREDERICK C. PHILLIPS. The presence of the “fa” gene in heterozygous (FA/fa) lean female rats: effects on body weight, body fat and serum leptin. Obes Res. Objective: In previous studies, suckling lean heterozygous (FA/fa) pups had higher body fat levels in comparison to lean homozygous (FA/FA) pups. However, in older male rats fed either low- or high-fat diets, we found no effects of the “fa” gene in heterozygous lean rats compared to homozygous lean rats. Other studies have reported effects of the “fa” gene on aspects of insulin metabolism for lean heterozygous female rats compared to their homozygous counterparts. In the present study, the effect of the “fa” gene on body weight and body fat in lean female rats was investigated. Research Methods and Procedures: Homozygous lean female rats were obtained by mating homozygous lean male and female rats. Heterozygous lean female rats were obtained by mating homozygous obese male rats with heterozygous lean female rats. Following weaning, rats were maintained on a standard laboratory diet until 10 weeks of age when they were killed after an overnight fast. Results: Body weight (p<0. 03) and inguinal (p = 0. 01) and combined retroperitoneal+parametrial (p = 0. 06) fat pad weights were heavier in heterozygous lean compared to homozygous lean female rats. Combined fat pad-to-body weight ratio (p = 0. 05) and fat cell sizes (p = 0. 06) were also higher in the heterozygous lean compared to homozygous lean rats. No differences in serum triacylglycerol, cholesterol, glucose, or insulin concentrations were found between the two groups, but serum leptin levels were significantly higher (p<0. 004) in heterozygous lean rats. Discussion: These results indicate that effects of the “fa” gene are present during the postweaning period in lean female rats. Implications for increased body fat and leptin with respect to sexual maturation and fertility are discussed.  相似文献

Studies of sexual selection in animal systems frequently use courtship and receptivity behaviors as metrics for mating success, and this is generally built upon data associating such behaviors with mating. Spider systems are becoming increasingly popular in sexual selection research, and the wolf spider Gladicosa gulosa has the potential to help answer unique questions in animal communication. However, this species is understudied, and no quantitative data exist that demonstrate which male and female behaviors may be indicators of mating success. We paired male and female G. gulosa and recorded the behaviors involved in their courtship and mating. We found a number of significant behaviors from both males and females, and we suggest which behaviors/variables are perhaps most predictive of mating success. Beyond building a data‐based foundation for future work, we also suggest that the relationship of certain male and female variables may shed light on some of the more unique features of this species.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this study was to investigate H(e) concentration in plasma from 80 healthy donors in relation to age (6 newborns are also included), sex, daily variation (9, 11 a.m.; 2, 6, 12 p.m.) and a period of 5 subsequent months. A significant correlation (r = 0.63, p < 0.001) was observed between plasma H(e) and age and a statistical difference (p < 0.05) was found between female and male. No circadian rhythm or significant variations over 5 months were found.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the well-established relationship between parity and birth weight is affected by the sex composition of siblings, especially for male newborns. Subjects were 856 male and 862 female newborns who weighed at least 2500 g at birth, who were born after 37 completed weeks of gestation, who obtained an Apgar score of 7 or higher, who had the same biological parents as all other children in the sibship, and who lived in the same household. Information on birth weight was collected from hospital records. Results showed that male newborns with older brothers weighed less than male newborns with older sisters. In contrast, the weight of female newborns with older brothers did not differ from the weight of female newborns with older sisters. One explanation of these results is that maternal immunoreactivity to some male-specific feature of the fetus affects prenatal development and consequently reduces birth weight in males. The relation between older brothers and birth weight may have theoretical significance for behavioural variables.  相似文献

In 10,844 parent/child allelic transfers at nine short-tandem-repeat (STR) loci, 23 isolated STR mismatches were observed. The parenthood in each of these cases was highly validated (probability >99.97%). The event was always repeat related, owing to either a single-step mutation (n=22) or a double-step mutation (n=1). The mutation rate was between 0 and 7 x 10(-3) per locus per gamete per generation. No mutations were observed in three of the nine loci. Mutation events in the male germ line were five to six times more frequent than in the female germ line. A positive exponential correlation between the geometric mean of the number of uninterrupted repeats and the mutation rate was observed. Our data demonstrate that mutation rates of different loci can differ by several orders of magnitude and that different alleles at one locus exhibit different mutation rates.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of reproduction with 45 wild African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) (36 females and 9 males) during the nine years from 1981 to 1989 under indoor individually-caged conditions. In 206 cases of menstruation observed, menstrual discharge lasted for 2.5 +/- 1.2 days in cycles of 22-48 days, and the length of each menstrual cycle was 31.2 +/- 6.5 days. Females who had regular menstrual cycles were subjected to "one-to-one timed mating"; females and males were put together on a one-to-one basis daily only for a certain period of time on and after the day of ovulation. Females who had irregular menstrual cycles or had no menstruation were subjected to "every-other-day mating"; females and males were put together on a one-to-one basis every other day for at least 16 weeks. The pregnancy rate (No. of pregnant females/No. of mated females) by one-to-one timed mating was 48.9% (116/237); 2.0 mating trials were needed to obtain one case of pregnancy. On the other hand, the pregnancy rate (No. of pregnant females/No. of mating trials) by every-other-day mating was 96% (48/50). Females who delivered normally totaled 129. The mean gestation period was 165 days when males, weighing 343 g on average at birth, were delivered, and 166 days when females, weighing 318 g on average at birth, were delivered. The male and female newborns were nursed for 131 and 138 days, respectively, on average. Details are summarized in Table 3. This paper also reports 23 cases of abortion, 6 stillbirths, and 6 cases of Caesarean section, by which three live fetuses and three dead fetuses were obtained.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to elucidate whether sex or pregnancy state might affect the content and/or pattern of gangliosides from the forebrain, cerebellum and brain stem of rats. Adult male, mother (1-day after offspring) and nonpregnant rats of similar age were analyzed. Non-significant differences in ganglioside concentrations and patterns were found for the respective neural area of adult male and female rats except for a decrease in cerebellum and brain stem content from mothers and 12.0 months-old males, respectively. Thus, it seems that neither sex nor pregnancy hormones affect these parameters. By contrast, significant differences were found for pattern and ganglioside contents between adult (male and female) rats and newborns (1 day-old). Newborns showed a significant decrease in their forebrain (2.5-fold), cerebellum (2.0-fold) and brain stem (2.0-fold) ganglioside content when compared with adult (male and female) rats. Significant increases (p<0.001) were found in the phospholipid and cholesterol contents in the different brain areas in mothers versus their newborns. The phospholipid pattern also showed significant changes in all brain areas, with an increase (p<0.001) in phosphatidylethanolamine percentage in adult animals, among the main variations. An explanation for these facts is suggested.Abbreviations NeuAc N-acetylneuraminic acid - TLC thin layer chromatography - PC phosphatidylcholine - PE phosphatidylethanolamine - PS phosphatidylserine - PI phosphatidylinositol - PA phosphatidic acid - SM sphingomyelin - PG phosphatidylglycerol Special issue dedicated to Dr. Santiago Grisolía.  相似文献

A recently proposed model for canine reduction in hominid evolution (the “dual selection” model) suggests that canine reduction occurs as a result for incorporation of the canines into a functional incisal field. Among the evidence used to support this model are patterns of wear and occlusion of the canine teeth, particularly in female anthropoid primates. We examined wear and occlusal patterns of the canine teeth of 311 male and female anthropoid primates. We find no evidence that the canines are typically occluded tip-to-tip, or that they show wear patterns indicating a “gripping and pulling” function during food ingestion and processing. Furthermore, we do not find compelling evidence that the development of the mesial cristid is associated with canine reduction. While we agree that the mechanisms of selective pressures underlying canine reduction need to be investigated, the “dual selection” hypothesis is unsupported by comparative data. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Nest site fidelity and serial polyandry were examined in lingcod, Ophiodon elongatus, a teleost fish in which the nest-guarding male parent invests more heavily in parental care than the elusive female parent. Lingcod parental and progeny genotypes were established for fish spawning on a 200 m(2) section of Snake Island reef, British Columbia in two successive years to evaluate male and female mate choice (monogamy or polygamy) and nest site reuse by the same parents (nest site fidelity) and/or different parents (nest site affinity). Thirteen nests (egg masses) guarded by nine males and 14 nests guarded by seven males were observed in 2002 and 2003, respectively. No female laid more than one nest per season or spawned in the study area in both years. In contrast, at least six (86%) and possibly all seven (100%) of the 2003 guardian males had been guardian or auxiliary males in 2002. Both nest site affinity and extreme male nest site fidelity were observed, with at least four males reusing the exact same nest site. Serial polyandry resulting from the high male and low female nest site fidelity is consistent with predictions based on a low female parental investment and high rate of progeny loss to predation and cannibalism. Male polygyny, achieved primarily by cuckoldry within seasons, was enhanced by the lack of female fidelity between seasons. Polygamy in both sexes of nest-tending marine fish may minimize reproductive skew and maximize genetic diversity within populations.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of culture conditions on the development of split embryos after bisection and on the sex ratio of resultant bovine demi-embryos. Embryos that had developed into blastocysts on days 6½ to 7 or on days 7½ to 8 from oocytes matured and fertilized in vitro were bisected in BMOC-3 medium supplemented with 33% calf serum. The medium also contained 0%, 0.1% or 1.0% Solcoseryl, a deproteinized hemodialysate product from calf blood. The demi-embryos were first cultured for 4 hours in the same medium in which they had been bisected and then co-cultured with cumulus cells in TCM199 supplemented with 1% calf serum for an additional 20 hr. The rate of production of good to excellent quality demi-embryos obtained from days 6½ to 7 blastocysts was higher than from those on days 7½ to 8. The rate was also significantly improved when blastocysts were bisected in medium containing 0.1% or 1.0% Solcoseryl, compared to the medium without Solcoseryl. Male embryos seemed to recover more rapidly than female embryos, as assessed by morphological quality at 4 hr, although the quality of female embryos had improved by 24 hr. The percentage of males after culture was higher in the medium without Solcoseryl than in its presence. Thus, addition of Solcoseryl at either 0.1% or 1.0% to BMOC-3 medium seemed to improve the production efficiency of good quality demi-embryos, but did not influence the sex ratio. It appears as if female demi-embryos required more time than male embryos to be repaired after bisection. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

“Good genes” models of mate choice are commonly tested by examining whether attractive males sire offspring with improved survival. If offspring do not survive better (or indeed survive less well), but instead inherit the attractiveness of their father, results are typically interpreted to support the Fisherian process, which allows the evolution of preferences for arbitrary traits. Here, I show that the above view is mistaken. Because of life‐history trade‐offs, an attractive male may perform less well in other components of fitness. A female obtains a “good genes” benefit whenever males show heritable variation in quality, even if high‐quality males invest so much in sexual advertisement that attractiveness has no positive correlation with any other life‐history trait than male mating success itself. Therefore, a negative correlation between attractiveness and viability does not falsify good genes, if mating with a high‐quality male results on average in superior offspring performance (mating success of sons included). The heritable “good genes” benefit can be sustained even if sexually antagonistic genes cause female offspring sired by high‐quality males to survive and reproduce less well. Neglecting the component of male mating success from measurements of fitness returns from sons and daughters will bias the advantage of mating with a high‐quality male downwards. This result may partly account for the rather weak “good genes” effects found in a recent meta‐analysis.  相似文献

Sex differences in ageing and lifespan are ubiquitous in nature. The "unguarded‐X” hypothesis (UXh) suggests they may be partly due to the expression of recessive mutations in the hemizygous sex chromosomes of the heterogametic sex, which could help explain sex‐specific ageing in a broad array of taxa. A prediction central to the UX hypothesis is that inbreeding will decrease the lifespan of the homogametic sex more than the heterogametic sex, because only in the former does inbreeding increase the expression of recessive deleterious mutations. In this study, we test this prediction by examining the effects of inbreeding on the lifespan and fitness of male and female Drosophila melanogaster across different social environments. We found that, across social environments, inbreeding resulted in a greater reduction of female than male lifespan, and that inbreeding effects on fitness did not seem to counterbalance sex‐specific effects on lifespan, suggesting the former are maladaptative. Inter‐ and intra‐sexual correlation analyses also allowed us to identify evidence of an underlying joint genetic architecture for inbreeding effects on lifespan. We discuss these results in light of the UXh and other alternative explanations, and suggest that more attention should be paid to the possibility that the “unguarded‐X” may play an important role in the evolution of sex‐specific lifespan.  相似文献

In studies 1 and 2 nine pairs of desert woodrats (Neotoma lepida lepida) were observed for copulatory behaviour when the female was in a state of naturally occurring oestrus (study 1) and following ovariectomy and oestrogen and progesterone replacement (study 2). Males and females respond in a similar way under conditions of natural and hormone-induced oestrus. Males show a consummatory pattern involving multiple mounts and ejaculations, with ejaculations occurring after single intromissions. Females show the lordosis reflex accompanied by hop-and-dart and ear-wiggling responses. In addition, both sexes show appetitive precopulatory behaviours; the male emits an audible rasping vocalization as he trails and mounts the female, following a period of intense sniffing of the female's anogenital region. The female also frequently approaches and sniffs the male. In study 3, the role of female odours in the sexual behaviour of the male was examined in eight of the nine pairs used in studies 1 and 2. This was done by applying to the anogenital region of ovariectomized females a combination of urine and vaginal secretions taken from familiar and unfamiliar, and oestrogen-primed or non-oestrogen-primed females. The results show that odours from oestrogen-primed females are not sufficient to elicit male sexual behaviour, if the female is not sexually active. In study 4 the eight males were tested for their preferences for urine and vaginal secretion odours taken from females in different reproductive states and applied to cotton swabs. These males spent more time sniffing unfamiliar oestrous odours than unfamiliar non-oestrous odours and more time sniffing oestrous odours from a familiar female over those taken from an unfamiliar female. In study 5, 12 sexually active males were tested with oestrogen-primed females before and after either olfactory bulb removal or sham-surgery. Bulbectomized animals ceased copulating with females although females showed precopulatory approaches.Taken together, these studies suggest that normal sexual behaviour in the male woodrat requires that the female both possess the attractive odours (of oestrus) and that she engage in appetitive precopulatory behaviour.  相似文献
