Most recognition is based on identifying features, but specialization for face recognition in primates relies on a different mechanism, termed ‘holistic processing’ where facial features are bound together into a gestalt which is more than the sum of its parts. Here, we test whether individual face recognition in paper wasps also involved holistic processing using a modification of the classic part-whole test in two related paper wasp species: Polistes fuscatus, which use facial patterns to individually identify conspecifics, and Polistes dominula, which lacks individual recognition. We show that P. fuscatus use holistic processing to discriminate between P. fuscatus face images but not P. dominula face images. By contrast, P. dominula do not rely on holistic processing to discriminate between conspecific or heterospecific face images. Therefore, P. fuscatus wasps have evolved holistic face processing, but this ability is highly specific and shaped by species-specific and stimulus-specific selective pressures. Convergence towards holistic face processing in distant taxa (primates, wasps) as well as divergence among closely related taxa with different recognition behaviour (P. dominula, P. fuscatus) suggests that holistic processing may be a universal adaptive strategy to facilitate expertise in face recognition.  相似文献

The resistance reflex in the femur-tibia joint of stick insects shows a great variability in its strength which allows the animal to adapt to different environmental requirements. This paper presents the modulations in the neural reflex pathways which occur during an increase of the gain of the resistance reflex after tactile stimulation. The gain increase was associated with a short-term, reversible increase of slow extensor tibiae depolarization. Because membrane properties like resting potential and input resistance of this motoneuron remained unchanged during the gain changes, the increase of depolarization appeared to result from an increase of stimulus-related inputs and thus was due to modulations of the premotor neuronal network containing afferents of the femoral chordotonal organ and interneurons. However, no changes of spike activity of sensory neurons and amount of their presynaptic inhibition was found during gain changes. In contrast, recordings from different types of identified premotor non-spiking interneurons demonstrated a correlation between the amplitude of stimulus-related inputs to particular non-spiking interneurons and gain changes, while other non-spiking interneurons appeared unaffected. Thus, an increase in gain of the resistance reflex must be due to a specific weighting of synapses between sense organ and particular non-spiking interneurons. Accepted: 3 July 1998  相似文献

Nonspiking interneurons were investigated in a tethered, walking insect, Carausius morosus, that was able to freely perform walking movements. Experiments were carried out with animals walking on a lightweight, double-wheel treadmill. Although the animal was opened dorsally, the walking system was left intact. Intracellular recordings were obtained from the dorsal posterior neuropil of the mesothoracic ganglion. Nonspiking inter-neurons, in which modulations of the membrane potential were correlated with the walking rhythm, were described physiologically and stained with Lucifer Yellow. Interneurons are demonstrated in which membrane potential oscillations mirror the leg position or show correlation with the motoneuronal activity of the protractor and retractor coxae muscles during walking. Other interneurons showed distinct hyperpolarizations at certain important trigger points in the step cycle, for example, at the extreme posterior position. Through electrical stimulation of single, nonspiking interneurons during walking, the motoneuronal activity in two antagonistic muscles—protractor and retractor coxae—could be reversed and even the movement of the ipsilateral leg could be influenced. The nonspiking interneurons described appear to be important premotor elements involved in walking. They receive, integrate, and process information from different leg proprioceptors and drive groups of leg motoneurons during walking.  相似文献

In insects, the primary sites of integration for olfactory sensory input are the glomeruli in the antennal lobes. Here, axons of olfactory receptor neurons synapse with dendrites of the projection neurons that relay olfactory input to higher brain centers, such as the mushroom bodies and lateral horn. Interactions between olfactory receptor neurons and projection neurons are modulated by excitatory and inhibitory input from a group of local interneurons. While significant insight has been gleaned into the differentiation of olfactory receptor and projection neurons, much less is known about the development and function of the local interneurons. We have found that Dichaete, a conserved Sox HMG box gene, is strongly expressed in a cluster of LAAL cells located adjacent to each antennal lobe in the adult brain. Within these clusters, Dichaete protein expression is detected in both cholinergic and GABAergic local interneurons. In contrast, Dichaete expression is not detected in mature or developing projection neurons, or developing olfactory receptor neurons. Analysis of novel viable Dichaete mutant alleles revealed misrouting of specific projection neuron dendrites and axons, and alterations in glomeruli organization. These results suggest noncell autonomous functions of Dichaete in projection neuron differentiation as well as a potential role for Dichaete‐expressing local interneurons in development of the adult olfactory circuitry. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The known nonlinearities of the femur-tibia control loop of the stick insect Carausius morosus (enabling the system to produce catalepsy) are already present in the nonspiking interneuron E4: (1) The decay of depolarizations in interneuron E4 following slow elongation movements of the femoral chordotonal organ apodeme could be described by a single exponential function, whereas the decay following faster movements had to be characterized by a double exponential function. (2) Each of the two corresponding time constants was independent of stimulus velocity. (3) The relative contribution of each function to the total amount of depolarization changed with stimulus velocity. (4) The characteristics described in (1)–(3) were also found in the slow extensor tibiae motoneuron. (5) Single electrode voltage clamp studies on interneuron E4 indicated that no voltage dependent membrane properties were involved in the generation of the observed time course of decay. Thus, we can trace back a certain behavior (catalepsy) to the properties of an identified, nonspiking interneuron.Abbrevations FETi fast extensor tibiae motor neuron - FT-joint femur-tibia joint - FT-control loop femur-tibia control loop - SETi slow extensor tibiae motor neuron - R regression coefficient  相似文献

The olfactory circuit of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has emerged in recent years as an excellent paradigm for studying the principles and mechanisms of information processing in neuronal circuits. We discuss here the organizational principles of the olfactory circuit that make it an attractive model for experimental manipulations, the lessons that have been learned, and future challenges.  相似文献

When small flying insects go off their intended course, they use the resulting pattern of motion on their eye, or optic flow, to guide corrective steering. A change in heading generates a unique, rotational motion pattern and a change in position generates a translational motion pattern, and each produces corrective responses in the wingbeats. Any image in the flow field can signal rotation, but owing to parallax, only the images of nearby objects can signal translation. Insects that fly near the ground might therefore respond more strongly to translational optic flow that occurs beneath them, as the nearby ground will produce strong optic flow. In these experiments, rigidly tethered fruitflies steered in response to computer-generated flow fields. When correcting for unintended rotations, flies weight the motion in their upper and lower visual fields equally. However, when correcting for unintended translations, flies weight the motion in the lower visual fields more strongly. These results are consistent with the interpretation that fruitflies stabilize by attending to visual areas likely to contain the strongest signals during natural flight conditions.  相似文献

Social insects have evolved sophisticated recognition systems enabling them to accept nest-mates but reject alien conspecifics. In the social wasp, Liostenogaster flavolineata (Stenogastrinae), individuals differ in their cuticular hydrocarbon profiles according to colony membership; each female also possesses a unique (visual) facial pattern. This species represents a unique model to understand how vision and olfaction are integrated and the extent to which wasps prioritize one channel over the other to discriminate aliens and nest-mates. Liostenogaster flavolineata females are able to discriminate between alien and nest-mate females using facial patterns or chemical cues in isolation. However, the two sensory modalities are not equally efficient in the discrimination of ‘friend’ from ‘foe’. Visual cues induce an increased number of erroneous attacks on nest-mates (false alarms), but such attacks are quickly aborted and never result in serious injury. Odour cues, presented in isolation, result in an increased number of misses: erroneous acceptances of outsiders. Interestingly, wasps take the relative efficiencies of the two sensory modalities into account when making rapid decisions about colony membership of an individual: chemical profiles are entirely ignored when the visual and chemical stimuli are presented together. Thus, wasps adopt a strategy to ‘err on the safe side’ by memorizing individual faces to recognize colony members, and disregarding odour cues to minimize the risk of intrusion from colony outsiders.  相似文献

Habitat templet theory predicts that the functional niches of species evolved in response to selection pressures imposed by each species' spatial–temporal environment. Consequently, similar environmental conditions should lead to convergence in the biological trait composition of biogeographically independent assemblages. Given their high diversity and ubiquitous occurrence, stream insects represent an ideal group to test convergence. Such an analysis should provide insight into both how spatially variable stream insect traits are and how transferable trait–environment relationships are across large spatial scales. We tested two hypotheses: (1) functional niches of stream insects are similar across Australia, Europe, North America, New Zealand and Southern Africa, and (2) the variability in trait profiles of stream insects is positively related to climatic variability within regions.  相似文献

The visual system in primates is represented by a remarkably large expanse of the cerebral cortex. While more precise investigative studies that can be performed in non-human primates contribute towards understanding the organization of the human brain, there are several issues of visual cortex organization in monkey species that remain unresolved. In all, more than 20 areas comprise the primate visual cortex, yet there is little agreement as to the exact number, size and visual field representation of all but three. A case in point is the third visual area, V3. It is found relatively early in the visual system hierarchy, yet over the last 40 years its organization and even its very existence have been a matter of debate among prominent neuroscientists. In this review, we discuss a large body of recent work that provides straightforward evidence for the existence of V3. In light of this, we then re-examine results from several seminal reports and provide parsimonious re-interpretations in favour of V3. We conclude with analysis of human and monkey functional magnetic resonance imaging literature to make the case that a complete V3 is an organizational feature of all primate species and may play a greater role in the dorsal stream of visual processing.  相似文献

We have analyzed the synthesis of nitric oxide in the terminal abdominal ganglion of the crayfish using the fluorescent probe 4,5‐Diaminofluoroscein diacetate, DAF‐2 DA. Following DAF‐2 loading, ganglia showed cell‐specific patterns of fluorescence in which the occurrence of strongly fluorescent cell bodies was highest in specific anterior, central, and posterior regions. We found that preincubation with the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L ‐NAME prevented much of the initial development of DAF‐2 fluorescence, whereas the inactive isomer D ‐NAME had no effect. Washout of preincubated L ‐NAME caused increased cell‐specific fluorescence due to endogenous NOS activity. Application of the NOS substrate L ‐arginine also resulted in an increase of DAF‐2 fluorescence in a cell‐specific manner. We bath applied the NO donor SNAP to increase exogenous NO levels which resulted in DAF‐2 fluorescence increases in most cells. We therefore presume that the cell‐specific pattern of DAF‐2 fluorescence indicates the distribution of neurones actively synthesizing NO. The similarity between the DAF‐2 staining pattern and previously published studies of NOS activity are discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Neurobiol 53: 361–369, 2002  相似文献

Iterated neuropil modules called glomeruli are characteristic of primary olfactory centers in both vertebrates and invertebrates. To gain insight into the developmental mechanisms underlying the formation of such structured, organized neuropil, we have examined the development of an identified glomerulus in the olfactory (antennal) lobe of the moth Manduca sexta. The labial pit organ glomerulus (LPOG) receives bilateral sensory projections from the labial pit organs in the labial palps of the mouthparts, while other glomeruli in the antennal lobe receive unilateral projections from the antenna. Here, we chronicle the development of the LPOG under normal and perturbed conditions. Our findings suggest that the sensory axons of the labial pit organ, like those of the antenna, induce and shape growth of interneuronal arborizations, but specific features of interneuronal arborizations such as the relative position of glomerular arborizations within the antennal lobe are independent of both classes of afferent innervation. Labial pit organ axons and antennal axons exhibit a high degree of specificity for their respective target regions, independent of the presence or absence of the other class of afferent axon or the route taken to the antennal lobe. Specification of glomerular position is intrinsic to the antennal lobe rather than a consequence of competition between afferent axons. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
