Ultrasonography was used in six saddle back tamarin females (Saguinus fuscicollis) to diagnose pregnancy, monitor the patterns of uterine growth and embryonic/foetal development and examine the incidence loss of single embryos/foetuses. Pregnancy was reliably diagnosed 17 days after conception, 10 days earlier than by plasma progesterone measurement. The patterns of uterine and embryonic/foetal growth paralleled those reported for the common marmoset, including a delay in embryonic development. The results support the hypothesis of retardation of organogenesis in most callitrichid species. Individual embryos could be reliably identified from day 50 of pregnancy; a loss of single embryos/foetuses after this stage did not occur. All pregnancies were carried to term, resulting in five times twins and one singleton. The smaller litter size compared to the common marmoset may be due to loss of single embryos at earlier stages of pregnancy or to a lower ovulation rate.  相似文献

Energetic trade‐offs in resource allocation form the basis of life‐history theory, which predicts that reproductive allocation in a given season should negatively affect future reproduction or individual survival. We examined how allocation of resources differed between successful and unsuccessful breeding female Columbian ground squirrels to discern any effects of resource allocation on reproductive and somatic efforts. We compared the survival rates, subsequent reprodction, and mass gain of successful breeders (females that successfully weaned young) and unsuccessful breeders (females that failed to give birth or wean young) and investigated “carryover” effects to the next year. Starting capital was an important factor influencing whether successful reproduction was initiated or not, as females with the lowest spring emergence masses did not give birth to a litter in that year. Females that were successful and unsuccessful at breeding in one year, however, were equally likely to be successful breeders in the next year and at very similar litter sizes. Although successful and unsuccessful breeding females showed no difference in over winter survival, females that failed to wean a litter gained additional mass during the season when they failed. The next year, those females had increased energy “capital” in the spring, leading to larger litter sizes. Columbian ground squirrels appear to act as income breeders that also rely on stored capital to increase their propensity for future reproduction. Failed breeders in one year “prepare” for future reproduction by accumulating additional mass, which is “carried over” to the subsequent reproductive season.  相似文献

It is widely believed that common marmosets (Callithrx jacchus) typically give birth to twins under natural conditions. In captivity, however, births of triplets or even larger litters are common, although parents rarely succeed in rearing more than two offspring. The traditional interpretation is that captive conditions, notably the ready availability of food, have led to increased reproductive output, perhaps involving a higher ovulation rate. The present paper provides evidence, combined from ultrasound examinations between ovulation and birth and hysterotomies conducted during the late embryonic and early fetal phase, that the litter size can be progressively reduced during pregnancy without spontaneous abortion. There is an unusually long lag phase prior to the onset of embryonic growth in common marmosets; the fetal stage does not begin until day 80 of the 144-day pregnancy. Reduction in litter size occurs during embryonic stages (up to day 80), and continues into the fetal stages. These results indicate that the common marmoset is adapted for flexible modification of litter size between ovulation and birth. The high incidence of triplet births in captive colonies may therefore be an expression of an adapted natural developmental process under artificial circumstances.  相似文献

1985—1988年,在青海湖黑马河地区以耳标法对高原鼠兔的繁殖生态进行了研究。在繁殖群体中主要是来自上年出生的第1、2胎的鼠兔(82.85%),第3胎和老体占少数。成年雌鼠兔100%参加繁殖,通常年产3胎,有的年份可产4胎或5胎。产仔数1—8只(平均为4.52±0.12),1只雌鼠兔终生可产2—29只。妊娠期为22.2±0.13天。洞内哺乳期为11.65±0.01天。有的年份当年出生的少数雌鼠兔到36.8+3.05日龄可达到性成熟并参加繁殖,生1—2胎。雄鼠兔性成熟较晚。  相似文献

Abstract: This study examines reproductive efficiency in the common marmoset monkey, Callithrix jacchus, using sequential ultrasound examinations to establish ovulation number, implantation rate, and incidence of prenatal loss. Ultrasound was carried out with a 10 or 7.5 mHz probe in nonsedated animals, daily during the late follicular phase, approximately twice a week until day 20 after ovulation, and at days 35, 56, and 85 of pregnancy to enable visualization of gestation sacs, heartbeats, and fetal heads, respectively. Ovulatory follicles could be seen 3–4 days before ovulation and by day –2, 98% of ovulating follicles were >2mm diameter, although almost 10% of follicles of this size disappeared without ovulating. Total number of ovulating follicles for 15 females was 45 (mean ovulation rate ? 3.0, range 2–4). In the 14 animals that conceived, 41 corpora lutea were identified (mean ovulation rate = 2.9) within 10 days of ovulation. All pregnancies went to term (no abortion occurred) resulting in the birth of 37 neonates (9 triplets, 5 twins) and an average litter size of 2.64. All four losses were confined to the embryonic period (< day 85), two occurring before day 35, one between days 35 and 56, and one between days 56 and 85. In demonstrating that 90% of ovulatory follicles gave rise to live offspring, the results of this study indicate an extremely high reproductive efficiency in the marmoset monkey (when maintained under favorable captive conditions) and a rate of prenatal loss much lower than that reported for other primate species.  相似文献

A heterologous double-antibody radioimmunoassay was used to measure plasma prolactin concentrations in 27 marmosets. The assay was valid for the marmoset because plasma levels of prolactin were increased in response to TRH and metoclopramide and suppressed in response to bromocriptine treatment. During the cycle there were no consistent changes in plasma prolactin concentrations. During lactation mothers suckling single or twin infants had higher prolactin levels than did non-suckling females and levels were highest with twins. No statistically significant delay in the resumption of ovulation post partum was observed for the suckling and non-suckling females; conception occurred in all but one marmoset by 70 days post partum. These results show that neither the suckling stimulus nor high levels of prolactin post partum delay the return of ovulation and fertility in the common marmoset, a result in contrast to that for all other primate species so far investigated.  相似文献

A colony experienced in the successful breeding of thecommon marmoset acquired 15 cotton-top tamarins for breeding purposes over a period of 2 yrs. Data are presented on the breeding of the cotton-top and compared with the breeding of the common marmoset. The tamarins did not breed as successfully as the common marmosets. There were several reasons for this: Cotton-tops took longer to produce young on initial pairing, had a longer birth interval, and showed a high incidence of suspected infanticide and parental neglect. These factors are thought to be largely responsible for the relatively low reproductive potential of the cotton-top in captivity.  相似文献

Endocrine data and characteristics of nonconceptive ovarian cycling and pregnancy are limited within the genus Callithrix to the common marmoset (C. jacchus) and Wied's black tufted‐ear marmoset (C. kuhlii). This article presents patterns of urinary pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG) excretion, as determined by enzyme immunoassay, throughout the course of ovarian cycling and pregnancy in white‐faced marmosets (C. geoffroyi). Furthermore, characteristics of reproductive parameters including litter size, duration of gestation, maternal age, and information about ovarian cycling following administration of contraceptives are also described. A steep increase in PdG, an indication of ovulation, characterizes normative ovarian cycles, with peak‐to‐peak intervals between cycles being 27.82 ± 1.49 days in length. PdG excretion (μg/mg Cr) across pregnancy peaked during the 1st and 2nd trimesters (1st = 20.71 ± 2.98, 2nd = 21.16 ± 2.60) and declined gradually to near preconception levels over the 3rd trimester until parturition (3rd = 5.74 ± 1.60). Gestation lasted 148.55 ± 1.89 days. Most pregnancies (82.8%) resulted in an immediate postpartum ovulation (PPO) of 17.45 ± 2.22 days with 58.3% of PPOs resulting in conception. No differences in PdG excretion during the 1st trimester between full pregnancies and miscarriages were found, and pregnancy characteristics such as litter size, duration of gestation, and maternal age were not associated with PdG concentrations. Administration of cloprostenol resulted in shorter peak‐to‐peak cycle durations, but ovulation was detectable with similar concentrations of peak PdG to a normal nonconceptive cycle. Conversely, medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injections resulted in little to no PdG excretion across the ovarian cycle. Both methods of contraception providing effective prevention of conception. Overall, these results show that strong similarities in reproductive parameters persist within the genus Callithrix and to a lesser extent across the Callitrichidae family. Am. J. Food quantity and especially food quality are thought to be key factors driving reproductive changes in the house mouse, Mus domesticus, leading to outbreaks of house mouse populations in the Australian grain-growing region. Characteristic changes during an incipient mouse plague are an early start of breeding, a high proportion of females breeding at a young age and a prolonged breeding season. We conducted a large-scale food manipulation during an incipient mouse plague, which started with early breeding and relatively high spring numbers of mice. We measured background food availability in four farms throughout the study and conducted a food manipulation experiment from November to March in two of them. After harvest in December 100-200 kg/ha spilled grain remained in the stubble. This was depleted by March. In two treatment farms we added high-protein food pellets on a weekly basis between November and March and two farms served as controls. We measured changes in mouse numbers by capture-mark-recapture trappings and changes in reproduction by scoring embryos and recent placental scars at necropsy. Mouse numbers did not differ between treatments and controls. There were no differences in the litter size or the proportion of females breeding between treatments and controls. We observed the normal pattern of high litter size in spring and decreasing litter size towards the end of summer in treatments and controls. In all farms reproduction stopped in March. Mouse numbers were high but not at plague densities. Contrary to our prediction we did not observe food constraint affecting the reproduction of female mice. Our field experiment seems to rule out food quality as the driving factor for improved reproduction and formation of an outbreak of mice. We suggest that physiological mechanisms in mice might not enable them to take advantage of food with a high protein content in arid summers in southeastern Australian grain fields because of the lack of free-standing water.  相似文献

Callitrichids are cooperative breeders, characterized by obligate twinning, extensive paternal care, and monopolization of reproduction by the dominant female. This is the case in the common marmoset, and in common marmoset groups of more than one adult female, subordinate females are typically acyclic consistent with infertility. However, one callitrichid, Goeldi's monkey, gives birth to singletons and exhibits low paternal care. Given these reproductive traits of Goeldi's monkey, we hypothesized that there would not be suppression of ovarian activity. To test this hypothesis, we applied non-invasive endocrine methods in a step-wise experiment with laboratory groups of both species. In each species, six pairs of sisters were studied alone, in visual contact with an unrelated male and in a polygynous trio with the male, and urine samples were collected for determination of oestrogen titres reflecting ovarian activity. Common marmoset sister pairs exhibited a marked difference in social status: during the study 5 of 6 dominant females conceived but only 1 of 6 subordinate females; the remaining 5 subordinates were acyclic at the end of the study, and instances of ovulation typically resulted in aggression. Goeldi's monkey sister pairs showed no status differences: in all pairs, however, both sisters exhibited a temporary cessation of ovarian cyclicity on trio formation, followed by ovulation and conception. We conclude that these marked differences in ovarian responses reflect the differences in inter-female competition for paternal caregiving resources. In common marmosets with high inter-female competition, suppression of ovulation functions to reduce aggression received by subordinate females; in Goeldi's monkey with low competition, temporary cessation of ovulation could facilitate female choice.  相似文献

The identification of an association between polymorphisms of the prion protein (PrP) gene and susceptibility to scrapie has enabled the development of breeding programmes to increase natural resistance to scrapie. It is, however, imperative to identify if such selection would affect important reproduction and production traits. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between polymorphisms at codons 136, 154 and 171 of the PrP gene and ovulation rate or litter size in sheep. Data were collected from a mixed-aged flock of Belclare ewes, over a 9-year period. Ovulation rate was determined annually using laparoscopy by counting the number of corpora lutea at each of two consecutive oestrous cycles, one immediately before and one after mating (2418 records from 366 ewes). Litter size was recorded at parturition (875 records from 353 ewes). The five common PrP alleles were present in the population and 14 PrP genotypes were represented among the animals studied. There was no significant overall effect of PrP genotype on ovulation rate or litter size and pairwise comparisons among genotypes did not reveal any significant differences for either trait. These data suggest that breeding programmes based on selection for specific polymorphisms of the PrP gene will not influence ovulation rate or litter size, at least in the breed studied.  相似文献

Most cooperatively breeding species exhibit high reproductiveskew, where reproduction within the social group is monopolizedby a dominant pair. In many of these species, social controlof reproduction is the mechanism driving reproductive skew:individuals within the social group actively reduce the reproductivesuccess of others. In species where females do not suppressconception in other females, alternative routes to skewing thesocial group's reproductive output include inducing abortionin rivals, evicting them, or killing their young. This studyexamines instances of female eviction, abortion, and infanticidein a cooperatively breeding species with low preparturitionreproductive skew, the banded mongoose (Mungos mungo). Althoughinstances of these behaviors are rare in this species, aspectsof their occurrence have implications for social control ofreproduction. Abortion can be induced by the stress of beingevicted. The readmittance of females that abort suggests thatreducing communal litter size is a possible selective pressurefor eviction. This is supported by the occurrence of evictionevents in groups with relatively high numbers of reproductivefemales and by the eviction of young reproductive females. Thetiming of abortion events suggests that synchronization of parturitionwith other females in the group is a major selective pressure.Infanticide could represent the selective pressure for synchronizedparturition. Alternatively, synchronization may minimize competitiveasymmetry between pups born to different females. This paperalso describes incidences where a female aborts or gives birthto her litter over different days in order to synchronize parturition:behavior previously unrecorded in mammals.  相似文献

Young, sexually mature female rhesus monkeys copulate on more days prior to conception than do older females, and this prolonged discrete mating period is associated with an earlier rise in serum estradiol prior to the first ovulation of the breeding season. The influence of repeated ovulatory cycles and the presence of a suckling infant on the copulatory patterns were examined in two separate analyses. Extending previous work, young, nulliparous females copulated on more days at the first ovulation of the breeding season than did older, multiparous females. However, the duration of the copulatory period at the second ovulation of the breeding season was similar and significantly shorter for both age groups. Furthermore, the presence of a suckling infant did not influence the duration of the mating periods in adult, multiparous females. The onset of copulatory behavior for all females was associated with serum estradiol concentrations of approximately 90 pg/ml, indicating that the age and cycle differences in the duration of the copulatory periods are due to the time course of serum estradiol prior to ovulation. A separate, longitudinal analysis of the duration of the mating period associated with the first ovulation of three successive breeding seasons indicated that females copulated on more days during their first ovulatory cycle of their first breeding season. These data indicate that the copulatory interval is longer for females during the first ovulation of the breeding season, and this pattern is accentuated in young, sexually mature animals.  相似文献

Mating is crucial for females that reproduce exclusively sexually and should influence their investment into reproduction. Although reproductive adjustments in response to mate quality have been tested in a wide range of species, the effect of exposure to males and mating per se has seldom been studied. Compensatory mechanisms against the absence of mating may evolve more frequently in viviparous females, which pay higher direct costs of reproduction, due to gestation, than oviparous females. To test the existence of such mechanisms in a viviparous species, we experimentally manipulated the mating opportunity of viviparous female lizard, Lacerta (Zootoca) vivipara. We assessed the effect of mating on ovulation, postpartum body condition and parturition date, as well as on changes in locomotor performances and body temperatures during the breeding cycle. Female lizards ovulated spontaneously and mating had no influence on litter size, locomotor impairment or on selected body temperature. However, offspring production induced a more pronounced locomotor impairment and physical burden than the production of undeveloped eggs. Postpartum body condition and parturition dates were not different among females. This result suggests that gestation length is not determined by an embryonic signal. In the common lizard, viviparity is not associated with facultative ovulation and a control of litter size after ovulation, in response to the absence of mating.  相似文献

Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) demonstrate significant variation in reproductive output on both a yearly and lifetime basis in comparison to other anthropoid primates. We explore the factors that may be most important in determining reproductive variation in captive common marmosets. Studies have found that maternal age, maternal condition, and dam survivorship are related to reproductive output; however, these reports are not in agreement and are far from conclusive. With the use of a large, multicolony, demographic database pooling data across five marmoset colonies, we examined litter information for 1,649 litters, and reproductive summaries for 400 dams to assess 1) how reproductive output variation (total production, total weaned production) is determined by litter size, interbirth interval (IBI), age at first birth, and dam survival age; 2) the relationship between maternal age and reproductive output variables; and 3) relationship between the reproductive output variables and survival. We used stepwise regression procedures to describe the amount of variation in lifetime reproductive output among dams, and found that mean litter size accounted for 18% of the variance in total production, survival age accounted for 10.6%, age at first birth accounted for 8.8%, and mean IBI accounted for 5%. For total (nonzero) weaned production, survival age accounted for 7.6% of variance, age at first birth accounted for 7.2%, mean IBI accounted for 2%, and mean litter size accounted for 1.6%. We identified significant effects (P<0.05) of maternal age on litter size and IBI length, but no effect of dam age on weaned litter size. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses revealed significant effects (P<0.01) of number of litters, age at first birth, and site on dam survivorship. Dams that produced more litters showed higher survivorship. Age at first birth showed a positive relationship with dam survivorship, i.e., dams that delayed first reproduction had higher survival. Our findings about reproductive variation in marmosets may have practical applications for the management of marmoset breeding colonies.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to develop a method for artificial insemination (AI) in the common marmoset, a New World primate species. For AI to be successful, sperm must be deposited at an appropriate site and time in the female reproductive tract, details of which are currently not available for Callitrichid species. Epididymal sperm were deposited in the cervix of 18 marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) around the time of expected ovulation using either 3, 2, or 1 inseminations. Six out of 18 females conceived, resulting in the first reported births following AI in this species. These pregnancies show that the presence of coagulum in the vagina and the stimulus of the female reproductive tract by natural mating are not essential for effective sperm transport in this species. Although 3 different timing regimes for sperm deposition relative to ovulation were employed, no protocol was demonstrably better than the others in terms of number of conceptions. The proportions of motile, live, and morphologically normal sperm in the suspensions used for AI were comparable with published values for ejaculates from fertile male macaques. These preliminary results indicate that births are possible following AI in marmosets: the technique could be used to aid effective genetic management of the species and possibly to facilitate captive breeding of endangered Callitrichids. The effects of acceleration and delay of puberty in female house mice on survival and reproduction were tested using 6 experimental groups: (1) control females mated at the time of first oestrus, (2) females mated at weaning, (3) females treated with male urine starting at weaning and mated at first oestrus, (4) females housed in groups and mated at first oestrus, (5) females housed alone, treated with urine from grouped females and mated at first oestrus, and (6) females housed alone and mated at 68 days of age. Females caged with males at weaning or treated with male urine and mated at puberty had lower rates of survival to 180 days of age, but did not differ in rates of fertility from mice in the other four treatments. Those females that were housed with males from weaning or treated with male urine also had smaller total numbers of litters, fewer total young, and smaller average litter sizes than did females for which the age of mating was delayed, by grouping or treatment with urine from grouped females, or by being held until age 68 days before mating. Control females mated at first oestrus generally were intermediate or did not differ from the male treatments on these dependent variables. There were no differences in the average number of female young/litter across the 6 treatments. Marmosets normally produce dizygotic twins sharing placental blood vessels and exchanging bone marrow cells. Each individual is therefore likely to be a blood chimaera. To date, marmosets had only been DNA fingerprinted using blood samples and probes 33.6 and 33.15, resulting in highly similar fingerprints among litter mates and little variation between other individuals, thereby limiting this method's use for individual identification and parentage testing. In this study, novel probes were applied to detect greater polymorphism and to produce individual-specific DNA fingerprints. As expected, blood DNA profiles of twins and triplets were virtually identical, confirming chimaerism in this tissue and identifying litter mates. Furthermore, these profiles were sufficiently variable to distinguish between sibs from different litters and between all other individuals. To produce individual-specific DNA fingerprints, the use of DNA extracted from tissues poor in leukocytes was essential. The findings demonstrate that, despite extensive blood chimaerism, marmoset colonies can be effectively DNA fingerprinted for indicidual identification, zygosity testing, and relationship studies.  相似文献

1. We examined positive associations and trade-offs of maternal and reproductive traits in a population of Columbian ground squirrels, Spermophilus columbianus .
2. Structural size, body condition, mother's personal allocation to body mass during reproduction, and timing of littering were estimated for live-trapped reproductive females that were observed during an 8-year period, and were compared to litter mass, litter size, and average pup mass using path analyses.
3. Mothers exhibited age-structured traits that influenced reproductive patterns. Yearling mothers were significantly smaller, bred later, and had smaller litters than older females. Mothers that gained more body mass during reproduction and older mothers in good body condition that were structurally large had larger litters.
4. Early seasonal timing of littering was an important positive influence on successful reproduction by older mothers only in early breeding seasons and in years when conditions for reproduction were good for all females.
5. The number of offspring that survived to 1 year of age was most strongly associated with litter mass and litter size; date of breeding was of secondary influence, with earlier litters exhibiting greater success.
6. In general, mothers that gained the most in body mass during reproduction were concurrently more successful in weaning large litters (perhaps due to better quality of foraging habitat).
7. In addition to expected reproductive trade-offs, reproduction by Columbian ground squirrels exhibited positive associations of life-history traits that may reflect evolutionary increasing returns.  相似文献

The morphology of the initial stages of implantation in the marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus) was studied by obtaining embryos and associated endometrium at timed intervals after ovulation. Estrus cycles were detected by measuring daily levels of plasma progesterone. Following a short follicular phase, circulating levels of progesterone above 20 ng/ml were taken as representing day 1 after ovulation. On this basis, single, twin, and triplet embryos were recovered from six perfused-fixed females on days 13, 16, 19, 23, and 29 after ovulation and prepared in resin for light microscopy. Early implantation stages, 13 and 16 days after ovulation, were characterized by the intrusion of syncytial trophoblast between epithelial cells of the endometrium with minimal cellular damage. Some hyperplasia of epithelium at the margin of the implantation site was evident. The consolidation of the initial attachment was achieved by an increase in syncytial trophoblast underlying the inner cell mass of the embryo which rapidly surrounded and breached maternal capillaries. Although initially separate, the chorions of twin or triplet embryos started to fuse by day 19 after ovulation. This process was complete by day 29 such that embryos shared a common uterine exocoelom surrounded by continuous trophoblast. It was concluded that implantation in the marmoset monkey commenced on days 11-12.5 after ovulation and involved an intrusive mechanism. Although trophoblast penetration of endometrium was superficial, maternal capillaries were tapped at an early stage of implantation. The fusion of chorions of twins and triplets first occurred around day 19 after ovulation.  相似文献
