Evidence from the chloroplast trn T-L spacer, trn L intron and trn L-F spacer shows the subtribe Glossonematinae of the tribe Asclepiadeae, hitherto composed of the Arabian and North African genera Glossonema , Odontanthera and Solenostemma , not to be monophyletic. Heterotrophic life histories have evolved independently numerous times in the angiosperms. In non-vascular embryophytes, heterotrophy is known only in the genus Cryptothallus . Cryptothallus mirabilis obtains photosynthates indirectly from a host tree via a basidiomycete that is simultaneously ectomycorrhizal on the host, a strategy known as myco-heterotrophism. This simple thalloid liverwort was initially described as an albino variant of Aneura pinguis , and the literature varies on whether it should be considered as such, as a distinct species of Aneura , or as a separate genus. Here, the relationships of C. mirabilis within the family Aneuraceae are reconstructed using DNA sequence data from the chloroplast ( rps 4, rps 14, atp B- rbc L spacer, trn G), mitochondrial ( trn S), and nuclear (26S and ITS) genomes. Several allopatric populations of C. mirabilis and of both sympatric species of Aneura (i.e. A. pinguis and A. maxima ) were included. Cryptothallus mirabilis is resolved as having a single origin from within Aneura , and hence the myco-heterotrophic liverwort should be considered as a distinct species of Aneura , rather than an autonomous genus. The fungal symbiont of the photosynthetic A. pinguis is of the same genus, Tulasnella , as that of C. mirabilis , suggesting that the heterotrophic life strategy might have evolved from a pre-existing symbiosis.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 156 , 1–12.  相似文献

The genus Prosopis contains 44 species of trees and shrubs, the majority of which originate in the Americas. Most species are reported to be diploid, with a somatic chromosome number of 2 n  = 28. There are rare reports of polyploidy, although it is thought that these may represent polysomaty in root tissues. However, flow cytometry has recently indicated that P. juliflora is entirely tetraploid with a somatic chromosome number of 2 n  = 56. In order to clarify the situation, an extensive review of ploidy in Prosopis was undertaken, the first of its kind. The ploidy levels of 124 samples of Prosopis from 21 countries, including both the natural and introduced ranges, were analysed using flow cytometry. In addition, a comprehensive literature review was carried out, examining 305 published ploidy values and covering 32 of the 44 species of Prosopis . Flow cytometry analysis suggests that P. juliflora is the only tetraploid species, with a somatic chromosome number of 2 n  = 4 x  = 56, whilst the remainder of the species analysed are diploid with 2 n  = 2 x  = 28, including the first report for P. articulata (2 n  = 28). The systematics of the genus Crataegus (Rosaceae) have been considered problematic owing to the fact that hybridization, introgression, polyploidy and apomixis may occur in this genus. A study of the Crataegus species from the Arab mountains, Sweida Province, Syria, has been undertaken based on both plastid DNA sequences ( trn L- trn F, psb A- trn H) and morphological data. In the investigated region, three morphologically distinguishable Crataegus species: C. azarolus var. aronia L., C.  ×  sinaica Boiss. ssp. sinaica and C. monogyna var. monogyna Jacq. were investigated. Crataegus azarolus can be clearly distinguished morphologically from C. monogyna by the colour, size and structure of fruits, the number of pyrenes, the flowering and ripening time, the density of thorns, the tree shape and also the leaf shape. According to our morphological data, in Syria, C.  ×  sinaica is variable and could represent a hybrid of C. azarolus  ×  C. monogyna ; the cpDNA sequence analysis showed sequences corresponding to C. monogyna as the plausible mother of the hybrid.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 255–263.  相似文献

Metagentiana striata is an alpine annual herbaceous plant endemic to the east of the Qinghai–Tibet (Q–T) Plateau and adjacent areas. The phylogeography of M. striata was studied by sequencing the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) trn S– trn G intergenic spacer. Ten haplotypes were identified from an investigation of 232 individuals of M. striata from 14 populations covering the entire geographical range of this species. The level of differentiation amongst populations was very high ( G ST = 0.746; N ST = 0.774) and a significant phylogeographical structure was observed ( P  < 0.05). An analysis of molecular variance found a high variation amongst populations (76%), with F ST = 0.762 (highly significant, P  < 0.001), indicating that little gene flow occurred amongst the different regions; this was explained by the isolation of populations by high mountains along the Q–T Plateau and adjacent areas ( N m = 0.156). Only one ancestral haplotype (A) was common and widespread throughout the distributional range of M. striata. The populations of the Hengduan Mountains region of the south-eastern Q–T Plateau showed high diversity and uniqueness of haplotypes. It is suggested that this region was the potential refugium of M. striata during the Quaternary glaciation, and that interglacial and postglacial range expansion occurred from this refugium. This scenario was in good agreement with the results of nested clade analysis, which inferred that the current spatial distribution of cpDNA haplotypes and populations resulted from range expansion, together with past allopatric fragmentation events.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 125–140.  相似文献

Cicer L. (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae) consists of 42 species of herbaceous or semi-shrubby annuals and perennials distributed throughout the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. The origin and geographical relationships of the genus are poorly understood. We studied the geographical diversification and phylogenetic relationships of Cicer using DNA sequence data sampled from two plastid regions, trnK / matK and trnS - trnG , and two nuclear regions, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and external transcribed spacer (ETS) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA, from 30 species. The results from the phylogenetic analyses of combined nuclear and chloroplast sequence data revealed four well-supported geographical groups: a Middle Eastern group, a West-Central Asian group, an Aegean–Mediterranean group, and an African group. Age estimates for Cicer based on methods that do not assume a molecular clock (for example, penalized likelihood) demonstrate that the genus has a Mediterranean origin with considerable diversification in the Miocene/Pliocene epochs. Geological events, such as mountain orogenesis and environmental changes, are major factors for the dispersal of Cicer species. As part of a recent revision of the genus Crambe , based on the morphological study of herbarium and cultivated material, the systematics of section Dendrocrambe DC. are reviewed here. Section Dendrocrambe (including monospecific section Rhipocrambe Svent.) is considered to comprise 14 species, all endemic to Macaronesian archipelagoes: 13 in the Canary Islands and one in the Madeira Islands. Crambe feuilleei A. Section Choretropsis genus Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae) is formed by plants whose branches are modified into phylloclades. Despite the suitable characteristics of phylloclades within the Phyllanthus genus, the systematics of these species are poorly understood. Morphological data are presented here to allow future revision of this taxonomic group. The section is represented by nine species distributed in South America, eight of them endemic to Brazil. Our taxonomic studies distinguish the species and propose the synonymization of nine varieties of P. klotzschianus and two varieties of P. flagelliformis based on vegetative and reproductive characters. Increasing evidence suggests that geological or climatic events in the past triggered the radiative diversification of both animals and plants on islands as well as continents. The Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) has been extensively uplifted since the Miocene, but there is little information on possible links between these events and biological diversification in this and adjacent regions. Partly to explore such links, we have examined the diversification of Saussurea (Asteraceae: Cardueae), a species-rich genus that is mostly endemic to QTP, but also occurs in arid highlands elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. The phylogenetic analyses were conducted on the basis of the nuclear (internal transcribed spacer, ITS) and plastid ( trnL-F and psbA-trnH ) sequences from 55 species, representing 19 sections from all six subgenera of Saussurea , and species from 15 genera of the Cardueae. The results suggest that the currently circumscribed genus Saussurea ( s.l. ) is a polyphyletic group and that five sections should be excluded from the genus. Samples from the other 14 sections (representing five subgenera) clustered as a monophyletic group (here designated the Saussurea s.s. lineage, SSSL) with high statistical support. However, none of the analyses (nuclear, plastid or combined) resolved SSSL's infrageneric phylogeny, and the parallel clades of the lineage indicate that island-like adaptive radiation occurred. Furthermore, this radiation appears to have occurred 14–7 Mya, during the period of the major uplift events of QTP. A survey of morphological characters is carried out for Stapeliopsis . The information obtained from this is combined with molecular data from the plastid trn L-F DNA region and ITS1 of the nuclear encoded 18S−26S rRNA cistron, to obtain a hypothesis of the evolutionary relationships among the species. It is shown that Stapeliopsis is monophyletic in a combined molecular and morphological analysis. Stapeliopsis is sister to a clade containing Huernia , Orbea and Tromotriche . The species of Stapeliopsis group into two clades. One contains S. khamiesbergensis , S. neronis and S. urniflora , and this is highly supported. The remaining species fall into an unsupported clade in which S. exasperata is sister to the others. The genera Hermanschwartzia Plowes and Neopectinaria Plowes are rejected. It is shown that a synapomorphy for Stapeliopsis is the laterally flattened inner corona-lobes, which touch the anthers only at their bases. Molecular variation in Antitrichia curtipendula (Hedw.) Brid. s.l. was studied based on the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the chloroplast markers trn L- trn F and rpl 16, and analysed by neighbour joining (for ITS; recombination present), maximum parsimony (chloroplast markers) and TCS (haplotype network). Old World plus E North American populations belong to a different lineage than those of W North America. These are molecularly well differentiated and are treated as A. curtipendula and A. gigantea (Sull. & Lesq.) Kindb. Two distinct groups of Old World haplotypes are separated by one 'missing' haplotype and are interpreted as cryptic species. Tropical African populations share one ITS deletion and form a lineage within one of the cryptic species. Molecular variation within A. gigantea , within each of the two cryptic Old World plus E North American (except tropical African) haplotype groups, and among tropical African populations are of similar magnitude, suggesting that analogous mechanisms and similar time spans explain the found variation. Events related to Pleistocene climatic oscillations are suggested as having caused this differentiation within each group, whereas the African lineage was probably split off before this. The Turkish Crataegus taxa were investigated using morphological, palynological, and anatomical characters. A new series ( Crataegus Section Crataegus Series Peshmenia ), two new species ( Crataegus peshmenii and Crataegus christensenii ), and one variety ( Crataegus rhipidophylla var. kutahyaensis ) are described. Furthermore, Crataegus  ×  browicziana has been assigned to Crataegus rhipidophylla with a new status. Illustrations of the described taxa and their distribution map are also given. Recent mtDNA phylogenies of Australasian agamid lizards are highly incongruent with existing morphological views. To resolve this discrepancy we sequenced two nuclear gene regions, c- mos and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). These were highly concordant with each other and the mtDNA phylogeny, but not the morphology. A combined molecular analysis reveals substantial hidden support (additional phylogenetic signal that emerges only when the data sets interact in a combined analysis). Bayesian posteriors, and a partitioned bootstrap procedure introduced here, indicate strong support for most nodes. The resultant tree implies extensive morphological homoplasy, with many genera emerging as non-monophyletic ( Amphibolurus , Rankinia , Ctenophorus , Physignathus , Diporiphora ). The water and forest dragons ( Physignathus and Hypsilurus ) form a paraphyletic basal assemblage to the more derived Australian forms such as Amphibolurus and Ctenophorus , which include almost all the xeric taxa. However, the thorny devil Moloch horridus is a basal lineage and not closely related to the other arid forms. Tree topology, inferred divergence dates, palaeogeographical and palaeoclimatic data are all consistent with Miocene immigration into Australia from the north by mesic forest ecomorphs, followed by initial diversification in mesic habitats before radiation into xeric habitats facilitated by increasing aridity.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 343–358.  相似文献

Middle Eocene seagrass compressions occur in the Avon Park Limestone Formation near Gulf Hammock on Florida's west coast. One group of specimens resembles two seagrass species of the hydrocharitaceans, Thalassia and Enhalus , that are living today in tropical and subtropical shallow marine environments. The Eocene plant has a dimorphic rhizome system consisting of a creeping, monopodial, plagiotropic rhizome with small roots and orthotropic laterals (short shoots) that occur in pairs every three to five nodes. Laterals bifurcate and produce glabrous eligulate leaves in an alternate and distichous arrangement. Foliage leaves have fibrous basal sheaths, blades with parallel venation, perpendicular and oblique cross veins, prominent midrib, and smooth, entire margins. Throughout the plant are numerous brown-coloured tanniferous dots and deposits of small calcium oxalate crystals. We describe the larval stages of three species of the Asian-African tiger frogs Hoplobatrachus chinensis, H. occipitalis and H. tigerinus . The tadpoles of all three species are very similar, with peculiar oral features: (1) double rows of needle-like labial teeth, (2) strong emarginations on the large jaw sheaths and (3) keratinized spurs on the buccal floor. Characters 1 and 2 (and perhaps 3) are probably related to the carnivorous habits of these tadpoles. A molecular phylogeny based on 2430 base pairs of two nuclear and four mitochondrial genes corroborated monophyly of Asian and African Hoplobatrachus, and identified Euphlyctis as their sister group. Tadpoles of the latter genus lack buccal spurs and double labial tooth rows but share large jaw sheaths, the upper with a medial projection. Therefore, the common ancestor of Euphlyctis and Hoplobatrachus probably was also characterized by this state, and may have been facultatively carnivorous. Further carnivorous specializations in Hoplobatrachus could explain why tiger frogs have been so successful in populating arid environments where ponds are at high risk of desiccation. Nine different classifications have been produced in the last 70 years for the horticulturally valuable genus Cyclamen , a small genus with fewer than 30 species. These classifications, generated by intuitive methods and cladistic analyses, incorporated a total of four infrageneric ranks above that of species and were based on data from morphology, cytology and DNA sequencing. Our results, based on cladistic analyses of three independent data sources − nrDNA ITS, cpDNA trn L intron and morphological data − reveal good resolution only in nrDNA sequence data. However, when these three data sources are combined they provide stronger resolution and support for three major clades, only one of which, subgenus Psilanthum , has been consistently supported in previous classifications. The differing infrageneric classifications produced in Cyclamen result from varying taxon sampling, differing interpretation of morphological data, changes in the sources and analysis of data, and inconsistent application of names. The taxonomy of the New World species of the genus Trichadenotecnum is revised. A total of 44 species, including 29 new species, were treated. These species are classified into 12 monophyletic species groups, eight of them newly proposed here. Two species previously assigned to Trichadenotecnum , T. pichincha New & Thornton and T. sylvaticum Turner, are recognized as not belonging to this genus. Phylogenetic relationships among 16 previously and presently proposed species groups are estimated based on a data matrix of 58 morphological characters. Trees from these analyses support monophyly of Trichadenotecnum and the proposed species groups. The New World species were divided into three major clades.
