It is widely believed that behavior is more evolutionarily labile and/or more difficult to characterize than morphology, and thus that behavioral characters are not as useful as morphological characters for estimating phylogenetic relationships. To examine the relative utility of behavior and morphology for estimating phylogeny, we compared levels of homoplasy for morphological and behavioral characters that have been used in systematic studies. In an analysis of 22 data sets that contained both morphological and behavioral characters we found no significant difference between mean consistency indices (CIs, which measure homoplasy) within data sets for the two types of characters. In a second analysis we compared overall CIs for 8 data sets comprised entirely of behavioral characters with overall CIs for 32 morphological data sets and found no significant difference between the two types of data sets. For both analyses, 95% confidence limits on the difference between the two types of characters indicate that, even if given the benefit of the doubt, morphological characters could not have substantially higher mean CIs than behavioral characters. These results do not support the idea that behavioral characters are less useful than morphological characters for the estimation of phylogeny.  相似文献

The Gasterosteidae is an important model system in evolutionary biology. Phylogenetic relationships have previously been constructed based upon morphological and behavioral data, but to date no one has investigated those relationships using molecular characters. This paper reports the results of an analysis using sequences from five mitochondrial genes (12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, cytochrome b, ATPase 6, and control region). Phylogenetic analysis of 2879 bp produced a single most parsimonious tree with a consistency index of 72.6%. That tree agrees with the behavior+morphology topology, with one exception: Apeltes is placed as the sister group to Pungitius+Culaea, rather than as the sister-group of (Pungitius+Culaea)+Gasterosteus. This study highlights the importance of using multiple mitochondrial genes in a phylogenetic analysis. Separately, the five genes produced four significantly different topologies, and might have given different versions of gasterosteid relationships had only one or two genes been sequenced. It is thus imperative that comparative biologists choose only trees that contain multiple mitochondrial genes as the basis for studies of evolutionary patterns and processes.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among the four tribes of corbiculate bees (Euglossini, Bombini, Meliponini, and Apini) are controversial. There is substantial incongruence between morphological and molecular data, and the single origin of eusociality is questionable. The use of behavioral characters by previous workers has been restricted to some typological definitions, such as solitary and eusocial. Here, I expand the term "social" to 42 characters and present a tree based only on behavioral characters. The reconstructed relationships were similar to those observed in morphological and "total evidence" analyses, i.e., Euglossini + (Bombini + (Meliponini + Apini)), all of which support a single origin of eusociality.  相似文献

Genealogical relationships among Gasterosteidae (Teleostei: Gasterosteiformes) were tested with 84 morphological, 48 behavioral, and 2879 molecular characters. Phylogenetic analysis of the combined data set identified a single (CI = 0.735) best‐supported hypothesis (Spinachia (Apeltes ((Pungitius + Culaea)(Gasterosteus aculeatus + G. wheatlandi)))). This hypothesis is identical to previous phylogenetic propositions proposed on the basis of behavioral, and behavioral plus morphological data. Our hypothesis, however, differed from a molecular‐based phylogeny in the placement of Apeltes. This analysis highlights the importance of combining all available evidence in order to produce the best‐supported proposition of genealogical relationships.  相似文献

Abstract. This paper reports the conclusions of studies into the phylogeny of tachyporine group subfamilies and the ‘basal’ lineages of the subfamily Aleocharinae (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) based on both larval and adult morphological data (133 adult characters, twenty-seven larval characters). Representatives of forty species of the tachyporine group were used in the analysis, including representatives of the Aleocharinae, Trichophyinae, Habrocerinae, Phloeocharinae, Olisthaerinae, and Tachyporinae. The Aleocharinae included representatives of the tribes Gymnusini, Deinopsini, Mesoporini, the ‘subfamily’ Trichopseniinae, and representatives of nine major tribes in the ‘higher’ Aleocharinae (Athetini, Hoplandriini, Falagriini, Lomechisini, Oxypodini, Aleocharini, Myllaenini, Homalotini, and Hypocyphtini). Analyses were performed first with adult characters alone and then with both larval and adult characters in a simultaneous analysis. The analysis based on adult characters produced eighty-five equally parsimonious trees (length = 499, consistency index = 42; retention index = 69). In the consensus tree, the Tachyporinae are not monophyletic, and the sister-group relationship between the Trichophyinae + Habrocerinae and the Aleocharinae is not resolved. The Aleocharinae are monophyletic, but, among the ‘basal’ Aleocharinae, the relationships of Gymnusini + Deinopsini, the Mesoporini, and the Trichopseniinae are unresolved. The combined adult and larval data, using Tachinus as the outgroup, produced six equally parsimonious trees (tree length = 588; consistency index = 43; retention index = 69). The strict consensus tree of the combined larval and adult data supports the following conclusions: (1) larval characters substantially stabilize the tree; (2) the subfamily Tachyporinae is not supported to be monophyletic; (3) the subfamilies Trichophyinae and Habrocerinae are sister groups, and together they are sister to the Aleocharinae; (4) the ‘basal’ Aleocharinae are not a monophyletic group, but the ‘higher’ Aleocharinae are monophyletic; (5) the sister group of the remaining Aleocharinae is a lineage made up of genera currently in the tribes Gymnusini and Deinopsini; (6) within the Gymnusini–Deinopsini lineage, the monophyly of the Gymnusini is weakly supported, but the monophyly of the Deinopsini is strongly supported; (7) the subfamily Trichopseniinae is strongly supported to be a member of the ‘basal’ Aleocharinae; (8) the Myllaenini are resolved well within the ‘higher’ Aleocharinae; (9) strong support for the monophyly of some tribes of ‘higher’ Aleocharinae suggests that morphological characters provide substantial phylogenetic signal for analysis of higher-level phylogeny of the Aleocharinae in spite of the preliminary nature of the analysis at this taxonomic level.  相似文献

Phylogenetic systematic analysis of 24 taxa representing the rhabdocoel platyhelminths, based on a suite of 89 morphological characters, produced two equally parsimonious trees, 181 steps long, with a consistency index (CI) of 0.69 and a rescaled consistency index (RCI) of 0.56, differing only with respect to that portion of the tree containing Umagillidae, Acholadidae, Graffillinae, Pseudograffillinae, Pterastericolidae and Hypoblepharinidae. Our results accommodate all previously proposed sister taxa to the Neodermata in a single clade in which ((Dalyelliidae + Temnocephalida) Typhloplanidae) is the sister group of ((Fecampiidae +  Urastoma ) ( Udonella ((Aspidogastrea + Digenea) (Monogenea (Gyrocotylidea (Amphilinidea + Eucestoda)))))). Bootstrap and jackknife analyses indicate that the groupings of ((Dalyelliidae + Temnocephalida) Typhloplanidae) and of ((Fecampiidae +  Urastoma ) ( Udonella ((Aspidogastrea + Digenea) (Monogenea (Gyrocotylidea (Amphilinidea + Eucestoda)))))) are highly robust, with the latter clade having a CI of 90% and RCI of 82%. Disagreements among previous analyses of these taxa have been due to the influence of missing data for critical characters in key taxa and differences in the taxa analysed, rather than any inherent weakness in the morphological data. Non-phylogenetic systematic approaches to homology assessment and misconceptions regarding phylogenetic systematic methodology are discussed. Recent analyses combining sequence data with a subset of approximately 60% of the morphological characters should be re-assessed using the entire morphological database. Even if Udonella is a monogenean, it is most parsimonious to suggest that the common ancestor of the Neodermata had a vertebrate–arthropod two-host life cycle.  相似文献

The relationships between gonadal maturation and the expression of behavioral and morphological display characters in O. mossambicus was investigated and the possible role of androgens in the coordination of this process was evaluated using genital papilla size as a bioassay for androgen levels. Morphological and behavioral displaying characters were found to be correlated among themselves. The sexually dimorphic characters were correlated with gonad maturation and androgen levels, but not with the gonado-somatic index. Gonad maturation and androgen levels were closely related. Territoriality and other behavioral variables involved in reproduction were also correlated with gonad maturation and androgen levels. These data suggest that in O. mossambicus androgens play a mediating role between gonadal maturation and the expression of display characters, both morphological and behavioral. Sarcophagidae is one of the most species-rich families within the superfamily Oestroidea. This diversity is usually represented by three lineages: Miltogramminae, Paramacronychiinae and Sarcophaginae. Historically, the phylogenetic relationships among these lineages have been elusive, due to poorly supported hypotheses or small taxon sets, or both. This study provides a dramatic increase in molecular data, more balanced sampling of all three lineages from all biogeographical regions and a reassessment of morphological characters using scanning electron microscopy in the most comprehensive assessment of subfamily-level phylogeny in Sarcophagidae to date. This analysis of the largest molecular dataset ever produced for a phylogenetic analysis of a fly lineage, with 950 loci from anchored hybrid enrichment comprising 435 930 bp from 101 species, revealed Paramacronychiinae as sister to Miltogramminae, not to Sarcophaginae, as suggested by adult morphology. Maximum likelihood analysis produced a well-supported topology, with 91% of the nodes receiving strong bootstrap proportions (> 97%). In contrast to the molecular data, three out of nine morphological characters studied point to a sister-group relationship of (Sarcophaginae + Paramacronychiinae) and the remaining six characters are either silent on subfamily relationships or in need of further study. Re-examination of morphological structures provides new insights into the evolution of male genitalic traits within Sarcophagidae and highlights their convergence producing conflicting phylogenetic signal. Our phylogeny reconciles older and widely used systems of classification with tree-based thinking and sets up a classification of flesh flies that is more aligned with their evolutionary history.  相似文献

No qualitative cladistic analysis has been performed previously for the subfamily classification of Pompilidae (Hymenoptera). In 1994 Shimizu proposed six subfamilies, but their validity and relationships remain inconclusive. The objective of this study was to perform a quantitative analysis of phylogenetic relationships of the Pompilidae, with emphasis on testing the validity of proposed subfamilies. Two cladistic analyses were performed based on morphological evidence. First, a maximum-parsimony analysis of Shimizu's original morphological data matrix (72 taxa by 54 characters) was conducted, with the data subjected to a heuristic search for the first time with phylogenetic software. The resulting strict-consensus cladogram yielded a monophyletic Ceropalinae that was sister group to a large polytomy containing members of the remaining five subfamilies. In a second analysis, several of Shimizu's characters were re-examined, and new characters and more taxa were added to the data set. Terminal taxa were coded as species rather than as generic abstractions, and 20 additional morphological characters were introduced. The analysis was based on 77 morphological characters derived from the adults of 84 taxa. This second analysis suggested that Notocyphinae sensu Shimizu (1994) was nested within Pompilinae and that Epipompilinae sensu Shimizu (1994) was nested within Ctenocerinae; neither should retain their status as a separate subfamily. Lastly, Chirodamus s .s., which historically has been a member of the Pepsinae, is placed within the Pompilinae with reservations rather than erecting a new subfamily. After these allowances were made, a strict consensus tree gave the following relationships: (Ceropalinae + (Pepsinae + (Ctenocerinae + Pompilinae))).  相似文献

Abstract— Two data sets for 10 species of African milkweed butterflies (Nymphalidae, Danainae: one Danaus , two Tirumala , seven Amauris ) have been analysed cladistically, separately and in combination. One data set comprised 32 morphological characters, the other comprised 68 chemical compounds from male scent organs. Analysed separately, the two data sets produced six similar but non-identical minimum-length solutions. Analysed together, the combined data set of 100 characters produced a single minimum-length tree, identical to one of the three solutions for the morphological data set. The combined data produced a more informative result than congruence comparisons based on strict or combinable component consensus analysis. These results, together with re-analysis of a morphological data set for all 15 species of Amauris (which produced 12 minimum-length solutions), permit increased resolution of the existing classification of this Afrotropical genus, including the formal recognition of two subgenera, Amauris ( Amauris ) Hübner, and Amauris ( Amaura ) Geyer ( stat. rev. ). The fit of uniquely derived, unreversed chemical characters to the tree raises the possibility that stepwise additive evolution of semiochemicals may have occurred during cladogenesis of these mimetic butterflies. The implications for chemoecology and speciation are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Relationships in Henicopidae, the dominant southern temperate clade of Lithobiomorpha, are appraised based on parsimony analysis of forty-nine morphological characters and sequence data from five loci (nuclear ribosomal RNAs 18S and 28S, mitochondrial ribosomal RNAs 12S and 16S, protein-coding mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I). A combined analysis of these data used direct character optimization, and tested stability of hypotheses through parameter-sensitivity analysis. The morphology dataset highlighted the mandibles as a source of new characters. Morphology, as well as the most congruent parameters for the sequence data and combined analysis, resolved Zygethobiini within Henicopini. Groups retrieved by combined analysis of the sequences and combination with morphology for all parameters include Anopsobiinae/Henicopinae, Lamyctes + Lamyctinus + Henicops , Paralamyctes ( Paralamyctes ), and a clade that groups the southeastern Australian/New Zealand Paralamyctes ( Haasiella ) and P . ( Thingathinga ). Paralamyctes (including Haasiella ) is a Gondwanan clade in the most congruent cladograms based on all molecular data and combination with morphological data. Biogeographic analysis of subtrees for Paralamyctes resolved the interrelationships of Gondwana as (Patagonia ((New South Wales + southeastern Queensland) ((Tasmania) (southern Africa + India) (New Zealand + north Queensland)))).  相似文献

We sequenced 2800+ bp of the RAG-1 exon for representatives of all the currently recognized genera in the avian family Falconidae. A phylogenetic analysis of these data was compared to prior analyses of mitochondrial (cytochrome-b) and morphological (syringeal) data. The nuclear RAG-1 sequences produced results that were in agreement with the morphological results, but differed from the mitochondrial results with regard to monophyly of the genus Micrastur. A reanalysis of the cytochrome-b (cyt-b) data suggested that this result was due to heterogeneity in base composition. Comparisons of data quality and quantity across the three data sets indicate that the nuclear DNA sequences and the morphological data have similar consistency and retention indices as well as noise distributions that are superior to those of cyt-b. However, the RAG-1 data identify more nodes with high bootstrap support indices than do either morphology or mitochondrial sequences. In the final assessment, RAG-1 sequences were superior in phylogenetic utility both to syringeal morphology (because of sheer number of characters) and to cyt-b sequences (because of reduced noise and homogeneity of base composition, but in spite of having many fewer characters).  相似文献

Abstract— Recent cladistic analyses of the relationships of the tribes of apine bees have produced conflicting results. The question of single or multiple origins of advanced eusociality in the group is thus unresolved. However, the previous studies have each treated only a limited part of the character data available. A "total evidence" analysis is essayed here, combining the published morphological characters with sequence data from rRNA and mtDNA. The resulting cladogram is: Euglossini + (Bombini + (Meliponini + Apini). This supports a single origin of advanced eusociality, from a stage of primitive eusociality.  相似文献

ARTHROPOD PHYLOGENY: A COMBINED APPROACH   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17
Abstract— Ribosomal and ubiquitin protein coding sequence data are generated from 20 arthropods and five close relatives. These molecular data are combined with morphological characters derived from the literature to approach arthropod phylogenetics from the perspective of total evidence. Trilobita were included in the analysis through morphological comparison alone. The overall data strongly support arthropod monophyly. Recent molecular analyses which have yield different results are shown to have been based on few characters, few taxa or both. The most parsimonious explanation of the data is (Annelida + (Onychophora + (Trilobita + Chelicerata) + (Crustacea + (Myriapoda + Hexapoda))))). The data are largely concordant both internally among data sets and externally with previous cladistic anatomical analyses.

Phylogenetic relationships among feather mites of the subfamily Avenzoariinae (Acari: Analgoidea: Avenzoariidae) were reconstructed by parsimony analysis of a combined data matrix. We analyzed 41 morphological characters and 246 molecular characters from a fragment of the 16S rDNA. Morphological trees were well supported at deep branches (genera and above), but showed much less support and resolution within genera. Molecular analyses produced trees with better resolution and support on terminal branches and worse support on basal branches. I(MF) index for the combined matrix pointed to the significant congruence of both data subsets with the whole of the data. The topology of the combined tree was close to the morphological tree in the deep branches and had well-resolved terminal branches as in the molecular tree. This suggests a considerable level of complimentarity between the two data sets. An analysis of association patterns of the mites and their hosts was conducted based on the results of the combined analyses for the Avenzoariinae and a phylogeny of their charadriiform hosts (compiled from various bird phylogeny hypotheses). The trees could be reconciled by the invoking of 12-13 cospeciation events, 6-7 duplications, 2 host shifts, and 26-29 sorting events. This suggests a high degree of cospeciation.  相似文献

Cladistic and phenetic relationships of 51 eubrachyuran crab genera, comprising 36 genera of marine crabs and 18 genera of true freshwater crabs from 7 families, were investigated using 121 parsimony-informative adult morphological characters. The data matrix was subjected to four different treatments: (1) a cladistic analysis with a combination of unordered and ordered characters, (2) a cladistic analysis with all characters unordered, (3) neighbour-joining, and (4) UPGMA phenetic analyses. The parsimony analysis conducted with a combination of ordered and unordered characters produced a set of hypotheses which supported monophyly of a Pseudothelphusidae+Potamoidea clade. Furthermore, exemplar genera of the Bythograeidae and Pinnotheridae formed an unresolved polytomy with the Pseudothelphusidae+Potamoidea group, the Thoracotremata. The trichodactylid freshwater crabs were positioned as the sister taxon of the basal portunoid Carcinus, but were unresolved relative to other portunoids and geryonids. Second, the parsimony analysis conducted with all characters unordered resulted in a [bythograeid, pseudothelphusid+potamoid, pinnotherid, thoracotreme] group with no hierarchical resolution, which in turn formed a polytomy with a goneplacid+portunoid clade and a polyphyletic Xanthoidea. And third, phenetic groupings of the eubrachyuran genera invariably placed the pseudothelphusids with the potamoids, and this clustered with a group containing the thoracotremes (either in whole or part). Support was thus found for morphological connections among the nontrichodactylid freshwater crabs, thoracotremes, bythograeids, and pinnotherids, and for the placement of the trichodactylids within the Portunoidea. These two latter findings (that used a range of genera from each family) are broadly congruent with a previous cladistic analysis of selected eubrachyuran familial groundpatterns that used a basal exemplar of each marine and freshwater crab family (Sternberg et al., 1999). However, it is clear that the large scale homoplasy identified here may nullify any reliable hypothesis of brachyrhynchan groupings at this stage.  相似文献

Abstract. One hundred and twenty-one morphological characters of larvae and adults of the series Staphyliniformia were scored (multistate coding) and analysed to determine the family group relationships of the polyphagan groups Scarabaeoidea, Histeroidea, Hydrophiloidea and Staphylinoidea. Cladograms were rooted with exemplars of Adephaga, Archostemata, Myxophaga and the polyphagan families Dascillidae, Derodontidae, Eucinetidae and Scirtidae. Analyses of the same dataset with multistate characters re-coded as presence/absence (144 characters) produced cladograms that were similar to those produced from analyses of the original characters. Cladograms produced from partitioned larval and adult characters differed strongly, with adult-only trees more similar to those produced by combined data. The results confirm the monophyly of Hydrophiloidea + Histeroidea and of Staphylinoidea (including Hydraenidae). The Epimetopidae + Georissidae are the only strongly supported clade within Hydrophiloidea. A clade comprising Hydrochidae, Spercheidae and Hydrophilidae, and a sister-group relationship between the latter two families were confirmed in analyses of the data with presence/absence coding. Helophoridae, Epimetopidae and Georissidae are probably not a monophyletic unit, and additional evidence is needed for a reliable placement of Helophoridae. Scarabaeoidea are placed as a sister taxon of Hydrophiloidea + Histeroidea, but support for this relationship is weak. The branching pattern ((Hydraenidae + Ptiliidae) + (Leiodidae + Agyrtidae)), and a clade comprising Scydmaenidae, Silphidae and Staphylinidae (= ‘staphylinid group’) are well founded. The branching pattern (Orchymontiinae + (Prosthetopinae + (Ochthebiinae + Hydraeninae))) within Hydraenidae is confirmed. Poor resolution at the base of the trees and the placement of some nonstaphyliniform taxa (Dascillidae, Derodontidae, Scirtidae and Eucinetidae) as a sister group to a clade comprising Scarabaeoidea, Hydrophiloidea and Histeroidea suggests that Staphyliniformia may be paraphyletic. It is recommended that series names are eliminated from the classification of Polyphaga, at least for the more ‘primitive’ groups.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation in hybridizing species or subspecies is a prerequisite for allowing conservation ecologists and wildlife managers to identify parental populations and their hybrids in the field. We assessed the reliability of a set of eight morphological (body size and pelage characters) and four anatomical criteria (skull and intestine morphometric measurements) to distinguish between 302 French specimens classified as wildcat, domestic cat or hybrid on the basis of a Bayesian analysis (STRUCTURE) of their multilocus microsatellite genotypes. This aim was achieved by performing a set of multivariate analyses on morphological, anatomical and genetic data sets (Hill and Smith's analysis, co‐inertia analysis and discriminant analysis of principal components). Wildcats and domestic cats were very satisfactorily distinguished, even when using simple non‐invasive morphological criteria easily usable in the field like the morphology of the tail, dorsal line or flank stripes. Using anatomical instead of morphological characters slightly increased the discriminating power. Many more difficulties arose when we tried to distinguish hybrid specimens from both wildcat and domestic ones. Anatomical characters performed better than morphological ones in recognizing hybrids, but the assignment success rate remained very low, about 31.6% and 1.5%, respectively. Overall, the most discriminating characters were two continuous, derived anatomical characters: the cranial index followed by the intestinal index. Classification of specimens in three classes based on their microsatellite genotypes appeared to be inadequate for identifying hybrid specimens, as hybrid specimens seemed to be distributed along an anatomical continuum. With this observation in mind, we assessed the linear relationships between a proxy of the individual level of hybridization (qik) and the cranial and intestinal indices, respectively. Both relationships were highly significant. The greatest correlation was found with the cranial index (R² = 60.4%). Altogether, our results suggest that future work should be geared towards enhancing the measure of hybridization using more discriminating molecular markers and improving morphometric skull measurements through the use of modern geometric morphometric methods, using landmarks rather than skull dimension.  相似文献

We analyzed sequence data for 555 bp of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b in plethodontid salamanders, taken from 18 ingroup (tribe Bolitoglossini) and 4 outgroup (tribe Plethodontini) taxa. There were 257 variable sites, of which 219 were phylogenetically informative. Sequence differences among taxa exceeded 20%, and there were up to 15% amino acid differences among the sequences. We also analyzed 37 morphological (including karyological) characters, taken from the literature. Data were analyzed separately and then combined using parsimony and likelihood approaches. There is little conflict between the morphological and DNA data, and that which occurs is at nodes that are weakly supported by one or both of the data sets. Treated separately, the morphological and DNA data provide strong support for some nodes but not for others. The combined data act synergistically so that good support is obtained for nearly all of the nodes in the tree. Recent divergences are supported by silent transitions, and older divergences are supported by a combination of morphological, karyological, DNA transversion, and amino acid changes. Eliminating silent changes from the DNA data improves the consistency index and improves some bootstrap and decay index values for several deeper branches in the tree. However, the combined data set with all characters included provides a better supported tree overall. Maximum likelihood and parsimony with all of the data give not only the same topology but also remarkably similar branch lengths. Results of this analysis support the monopoly of the supergenera Hydromantes and Batrachoseps, and of a sister group relationship of Batrachoseps and the supergenus Bolitoglossa (represented in this study one species of the genus Bolitoglossa).   相似文献
