1. 1.|Temperatures at four sites along the ventral nasal concha were recorded in four unrestrained rabbits exposed to ambient temperatures from 0 to 35°C.

2. 2.|The nasal temperatures decreased and temperature gradients from proximal to distal parts of the concha increased in cold-exposed rabbits.

3. 3.|The temperature gradients increased also during panting in heat-stressed rabbits.

4. 4.|The ventral nasal concha is suggested to be an efficacious heat exchanger both in cold and hot ambient, due to its geometry and vascularization.

1. 1.|To determine the thermoregulatory prowess of altricial nestlings, we conducted both equilibrium and transient analyses of white-crowned sparrow nestings, a representative fringillid.

2. 2.|For an individual nestling at thermal equilibrium, feather development is the major factor reducing heat loss after 2 days of age; tissue- and boundary-layer resistances are of minor importance.

3. 3.|The nest substantially reduces wind speeds near the nestlings. Heat transfer through the nest material is of only moderate importance. Evaporation also appears to be a small proportion of total heat loss during hypothermia in natural environments.

4. 4.|Net long-wave radiant exchange is also minor, but short-wave radiation is potentially a major component of the nestling's energy budget, approaching the magnitude of maximal metabolic heat production.

5. 5.|When nestlings cool, their body mass and metabolic rate are also major importance in determining the rate of cooling, and (for metabolism) the equilibrium temperature as well.

6. 6.|The huddling together of nestlings is perhaps the single most important factor affecting heat transfer.

7. 7.|An older brood actually has more insulation than does an adult in the same microclimate.

1. 1.|Hypothalamic and rectal temperatures were recorded in 8 warm-reared (wr) and in 12 warm-acclimated control rats during resting in the heat and during 30 min running under thermoneutral conditions.

2. 2.|Brain and body temperatures of wr rats were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than control rats, both in normothermia as well as in hyperthermia; at rest, and also during exercise.

3. 3.|Warm-reared rats were more tolerant to heat.

4. 4.|During normothermia a weak selective brain cooling was present in control but absent in wr rats. During hyperthermia, however, the cooling intensified in control and occurred in wr rats.

5. 5.|The main strategy of adaptation to heat in wr rats is an upward resetting of the temperature set-point and increased passivity.

1. 1.|Atropine administration resulted in higher skin temperatures in both sensible and insensible environments and a higher core temperature in the hot environment, due to the reduction in whole body sweating. Exercise time was reduced 28 min following atropine in the hot environment, but was not affected in the humid environment.

2. 2.|The effect of heat storage (significantly higher after atropine) was shown to be greater in the hot environment due to inadequate sweat secretion for subsequent evaporative cooling. In the warm environment, enhanced sensible heat loss resulted in more effective thermoregulation.

3. 3.|Based on the effective temperature (ET*) it is suggested that exercise in the heat can be accomplished during environmental stress at warm temperatures after atropine treatment.

1. 1.|Intraventricular injections of serotonergic agonists and receptor blockers were given to sheep to determine whether the central nervous pathway mediating the drive to heat production involves serotonergic synapses.

2. 2.|At 15°C ambient temperature (Ta), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) at all doses tested, and norfenfluramine (NF) in low doses increased heat loss and decreased rectal temperature (Tre); lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25) and methysergide prevented these effects.

3. 3.|AT 0°C Ta, 5-HT, even in high doses failed to increase heat production but NF increased heat production and Tre.

4. 4.|The results suggest the effects of NF and LSD-25 on heat production may be related to synapses activated by an indoleamine other than 5-HT.

1. 1.|The effect of thyroidectomy at 12 days of age on weight gain, and on heat production and thermoregulatory ability of 4- to 5-week-old chickens at temperatures within and below the thermo-neutral zone was investigated.

2. 2.|Despit the absence of thyroid tissue, as demonstrated with radioiodine, a small amount of thyroxine was found in the plasma of some thyroidectomized (TX) birds.

3. 3.|Thyroidectomy depressed weight gain; pair-fed controls grew significantly faster than TX birds.

4. 4.|Resting heat production of TX birds at thermoneutrality (30°C) was depressed by 18% (P < 0.001) and body temperature by 0.4°C (P < 0.001).

5. 5.|At 12°C heat production of TX birds was similar to that of controls but the body temperature of TX birds was 0.7°C lower (P < 0.001).

6. 6.|Thyroidectomized birds were unable to regulate body temperature at 5°C even if thyroxine was provided on the day before and at the time of cold-exposure. This inability to thermoregulate was probably due to inadequate insulation and poor nutritional status.

1. 1.|Dinitrophenol (DNP) was administered to rats in two equal dosages (20 mg/kg, 30 min interval); the second injection was followed immediately by exercise (9.14 m/min) in the heat (30°C) or at room temperature (21°C).

2. 2.|At 21°C control (saline-treated) rats manifested a mean endurance of 94 min which was reduced to 32 min among DNP-treated animals.

3. 3.|At 30°C, control rats ran for 65 min (δTre/min = 0.05°C) while DNP-treated animals had a mean endurance of only 12 min (δTre/min = 0.22°C).

4. 4.|DNP-treated rats (30°C) manifested no decrements in tail-skin heat loss (δTsk/min = 0.17°C vs 0.10°C) or saliva secretion (0.78 g/min, DNP vs. 0.19 g/min, control) for their brief treadmill duration.

5. 5.|The increased metabolic heat production of DNP severely reduced performance.

1. 1.|Pyridostigmine administration decreased resting heart rate by 11 ± 7 beats/min and resting oesophageal temperature by 0.23 ± 12°C after 50 h (P < 0.05). In addition, red blood cell cholinesterase activity was decreased an average of 43 ± 7% after 50 h of pyridostigmine treatment.

2. 2.|The lower heart rates and core temperatures at rest were continued during high intensity exercise in a 35°C environment. Whole body sweating was 12 ± 18% higher (P = 0.20) during exercise in the heat after 50 h of pyridostigmine treatment.

3. 3.|Repeated anticholinesterase administration had little effect on cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses during high intensity exercise.

1. 1.|Heat production (HP) and body temperature (Tb) measurements were conducted at ambient temperatures (Ta) between 10 and 40°C. In addition preference temperatures (PT) were determined in a temperature channel and Tb was measured at preferred Ta

2. 2.|The influence of age on Tb at constant, as well as at PT, was proved. Increasing age was accompanied by an elevation of Tb whereas HP remained constant in the mid-range of Ta

3. 3.|The lower Tb in the first days of life is suggested to result from a lower thermoregulatory set point during the postnatal period.

4. 4.|The PT were different for the observed types of behaviour. The PT at rest was higher than the PT during locomotion, food intake and drinking.

1. 1.|Circadian changes in heat production (M), heat loss (H), core temperature (Tc) and feeding activity (FA) of ad-lib fed rats were observed by direct and indirect calorimetry.

2. 2.|M, H and Tc showed a clear nocturnal increase associated with several discrete increases.

3. 3.|Whereas the slope of M vs Tc relation did not change appreciably within a day, the slope of H vs Tc or thermal conductance vs Tc relation tended to decrease at night, implying that the correlation between heat loss and body temperature is also a function of time of day in rats.

1. 1.|Heat hardening in a transitory increase in heat tolerance following a sublethal exposure to lethal high temperatures.

2. 2.|Within 1–2 h of an initial exposure to the critical thermal maximum (CTM), the CTM of two species of amphibians and two species of fish had increased significantly above the initial level and then decreased to the initial level within 24 h.

3. 3.|Experiments with exposure to sub-CTM temperatures and multiple exposures to the CTM indicated that hardening requires exposure to the CTM and may be the maximum CTM attainable by the animal.

4. 4.|Diel and seasonal variation had significant effects on hardening ability.

5. 5.|Field evidence suggests that heat hardening is adaptive in that it provides an acute means of adjustment to extreme fluctuations in diurnal temperatures.

1. 1.|We demonstrate using thermodynamic arguments that water loss through arthropod epicuticle is well described by a linear law relating water flux to transmembrane vapour pressure drop.

2. 2.|The relationship applies equally to systems where the liquid or vapour exist on either side of a membrane.

3. 3.|An earlier claim by some workers that water diffusion through arthropod epicuticle is proportional to chemical potential drop across the membrane is found to be theoretically unjustified.

4. 4.|Recent measurements with Periplaneta cuticle support the prediction that flux at a given temperature is proportional to the difference in vapour pressure.

1. 1.|In hog slater, Asellus aquaticus, five extremities were consecutively isolated in the course of heat acclimation to study the pattern of changes in the level of the heat resistance of muscle tissue of each single specimen.

2. 2.|The initial response of the population, during acclimation, is for the muscle resistance of different individuals to become less varied. Then a simultaneous increase in tissue resistance occurs in all ammals, which is complete by the 6th day of acclimation. Afterwards the heat resistance of muscles in the majority of animals shows little change and then, in spite of maintenance of acclimation, it starts to return to its initial level.

3. 3.|Thermal acclimation causes a temporary decrease in the variability of the heat resistance of the muscle tissue and also a temporary stabilization of this physiological characteristic to a new level. This phenomenon is a phenotypical masking of genotypic differences in a physiological characteristic in the population studied during changes in environmental temperature.

4. 4.|At all the stages of acclimation the relation of individual increases in cellular heat resistance to their initial levels follows a hyperbolic exponential equation. This implies that to a rise in environmental temperature a population responds as an integral functional system.

1. 1.|Body temperatures (Tb) and contaneous evaporative water loss rates (CWL) were measured in tree frogs (Hyla cinerea) and toads (Bufo valliceps) exposed to cyclical ramp changes in water vapor density (WVD) between 7.5 and 9.8 gm−3 (1 cycle h−1 at an air temperature of 27.0°C.

2. 2.|CWL was 3.3 times greater in toads than in tree frogs.

3. 3.|Tb in toads cycled directly with WVd; WVD accounted for 98% of the variation in toad Tb.

4. 4.|Tb in tree frogs was independent of WVD, probably due to changes in skin resistance to water loss.

1. 1.|The migratroy hamster Cricetulus migratorius, a small nocturnal rodent, inhabits ecosystems characterized by dramatic seasonal fluctuations of ambient temperatures. The aim of this study was to assess seasonal acclimatization of its thermoregulatory system.

2. 2.|Heat production by means of oxygen consumption and body temperature in various ambient temperatures as well as non-shivering thermogenesis were measured in C. migratorius. The hamsters were acclimated to two different photoperiod regimes (16L:8D and 8L:16D) at a constant ambient temprature of 24°C. Overall thermal conductance was calculated for such hamsters.

3. 3.|The results of this study indicate that photoperiod manipulations adjust the thermoregulatory system of the migratory hamster mainly by affecting overall thermal conductance.
