Cotyledon areoles, a seed character unique to papilionoid legumes, are reported for the first time in the legume tribe Swartzieae, an anomalous group sometimes considered to be intermediate between subfamilies Caesalpinioideae and Papilionoideae. Bobgunnia madagascariensis has a linear, slightly branched cotyledon areole on the abaxial surface of each cotyledon. Previous reports of other papilionoid seed features in this species are confirmed and extended. These highly distinctive papilionoid seed structures, and recent reports from floral ontogeny and molecular systematics which show Bobgunnia to be closely related to Swartzia and several other genera of Swartzieae, add further evidence to assertions that Swartzia seed structures are derived by simplification from a papilionoid seed, and not by retention of less specialized caesalpinioid seed features. The function and evolutionary advantage of cotyledon areoles are unknown and need investigation. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 287–291.  相似文献

This study provides a checklist of the specimens kept in the Real Jardín Botánico herbarium (MA) belonging to the family Leguminosae and collected by Sebastián Vidal in Philippines, during the period 1876 to 1887. More than 750 specimens were studied. In the subfamily Caesalpinioideae we found 39 species (14 genera); Mimosoideae 24 species (10 genera) and Papilionoideae 85 species (40 genera). Twenty six species collected by Vidal should be considered introduced in the country. Although this collection is dated from the 19th century, five species are reported for the first time from the country: Albizia splendens, Bauhinia ferruginea , Caesalpinia andamanica , Sindora coriacea and Sindora wallichii . The whole Vidal collections (series 1, 2 and M) were studied and a map of localities with coordinates is provided. A statistical summary is presented at the end of the checklist.  相似文献

Cotyledon nuclei of most legume species did not stain adequatelywith the Feulgen reaction and so an indirect method based onthe relationship between DNA content, nuclear volume and cellvolume was used for the detection of endopolyploidy. Cotyledonendopolyploidy was not found in the Caesalpinioideae and wasinfrequent in the Mimosoideae. In the Papilionoideae it wasfound in taxa at several levels. It probably occurs throughoutthe tribes Vicieae and Cicereae and in most genera of the Phaseoleae;elsewhere it is confined to particular genera within tribes, such as Arachis in the Aeschynomeneae and Lupinus in the Genisteae.Endopolyploidy shows correlation with cotyledon anatomy aridfunction in that it is confined to cotyledons whose main oronly function is storage, and has so far not been found in foliarcotyledons. Chromosome numbers are reported from over 230 populations representing species in eight genera. First counts are reported for three species ofStephanomeria, five species ofLygodesmia, and one species ofPinaropappus. Base chromosome numbers,x = 6, 7, 8, and 9 are known in the subtribe;x = 9 is found in six of the 12 genera and presumably is the ancestral base number for the subtribe. Two phyletic lines, aMalacothrix line and aStephanomeria line are recognized on morphological grounds. A key to the 12 genera is provided.  相似文献

Beaman , J. H. (Michigan State U., East Lansing), D. C. D. De Jong , and W. P. Stoutamire . Chromosome studies in the alpine and subalpine floras of Mexico and Guatemala. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(1): 41–50. Illus. 1962.—Chromosome counts of 101 collections representing 69 species in 42 genera and 22 families have been obtained. Counts are reported for the first time in 59 species and 2 genera (Oreobroma and Villadia). Counts establishing new basic numbers were found in Draba, Lithospermum, and possibly in Arenaria. Where pertinent, the chromosomal data are related to previous taxonomic or chromosomal investigations. Chromosome numbers are now known in nearly half of the species in the alpine flora of Mexico.  相似文献

Summary An extensive study of the leguminous plants growing on Venezuelan savannas was made. Of 127 species examined, 109 were nodulated, with 73 species in the Papilionoideae. 71 species in 17 genera are new records of nodulation. Most of the non-nodulated species were in the Caesalpinioideae, and non-nodulation was correlated with brown coloured roots. Some environmental factors involved in the establishment of the legume-Rhizobium association are discussed. These observations on nodulation represent 13 per cent of the total Leguminosae flora of Venezuela.  相似文献

Summary A survey of 35 legume species comprising 25 of Papilionoideae, 7 of Mimosoideae and 3 of Caesalpinioideae was made. Nodulation was found in all the species except for 2 (Caesalpinnia pulcherrima and Cassia siamea) of Caesalpinioideae, both of which possessed dark coloured roots. Nodulation is reported for the first time for Adenanthera pavonina and Delonix regia. Nodule shapes were described and classified into different types. The isolates of rhizobia obtained belonged largely to the slow growing group (17 isolates) isolated mainly from members of Papilionoideae; some belonged to the fast growing group (14 isolates), and only 3 isolates belonged to the very slow growing group. The slow growing group isolates were confirmed to be cowpea type rhizobia on the basis of positive nodulation with cowpea plants. re]19750829  相似文献

This study provides a checklist of the Papilionoideae (Leguminosae) present in Equatorial Guinea, comprising 55 genera and 157 taxa. Twenty-six species are known from Annobón, 91 from Bioko and 110 from Río Muni. The best represented genus is Millettia with 14 species. Bibliographic references for Papilionoideae (Leguminosae) from Equatorial Guinea have been gathered and checked. Seventeen species are included, because published data on their distribution range suggests they may occur in Equatorial Guinea; 15 species are introduced and likely already naturalized; and 48 taxa are recorded for the first time from the country. This represents an increase of over 30% in the floristic knowledge of Papilionoideae from Equatorial Guinea. Three species only known from their types may be considered as endemic to Equatorial Guinea: Amphimas tessmannii, Leptoderris oxytropis and Millettia mildbraedii.  相似文献

Herbarium leaf fragments of the two known species of Orphanodendron (Leguminosae), O. bernalii and O. grandiflorum, were found to contain the quinolizidine alkaloids camoensine (1), camoensidine (2) and guianodendrine (3), supporting the recent phylogenetic placement of the genus in the genistoid clade of subfamily Papilionoideae rather than its traditional placement in subfamily Caesalpinioideae.  相似文献

de Wet , J. M. J. (Div. Botany, Pretoria, So. Africa.) Chromosome numbers and some morphological attributes of various South African Grasses. Amer. Jour. Bot. 47(1): 44—49. Illus. 1960.– Chromosome numbers are reported for 68 species and varieties of grasses belonging to 40 genera. These include first reports for the genera Megastachya, Lintonia, Plagiochloa, Ctenium, Oropetium and Beckeropsis. Cytological data were correlated with observations from leaf and embryo anatomy. A common ancestor is postulated for the tribes Oryzeae, Ehrharteae and Centotheceae. The genera Lasiochloa, Plagiochloa and Urochlaena appear to belong neither with the tribe Festuceae nor with the Eragrosteae but probably are closer related to the Danthonieae. Lintonia. Entoplocamia, Tetrachne and Fingerhuthia are characterized by the chloridoid-eragrostoid type of cytology and leaf anatomy but the bambusoid type of embryo anatomy. For these reasons they appear to represent relics of the original Eragostoid and Chloridoid stock. The South African representatives of the genus Crinipes differ from the tropical species in respect to leaf anatomy. The tropical species are typically of the arundinoid type, whereas the South African species appear to be related to the Danthonieae.  相似文献

Summary Leghemoglobin is a major component of the nitrogen-fixing nodules formed by legumes in association with bacterial symbionts of the genusRhizobium. It is thought to be involved in regulating the oxygen tension within nodules. In a series of Southern blot experiments using cloned soybean leghemoglobin cDNAs as hybridization probes, cross-hybridizing sequences have been detected in legumes closely related to soybean (members of the Leguminosae subfamily Papilionoideae), as well as in a distantly related legume not reported to be nodulated (subfamily Caesalpinioideae). With the same probes, the presence of cross-hybridizing sequences has also been detected in plants outside the Leguminosae, including two nitrogen-fixing non-legumes and one species which is not nodulated. These results suggest that the genes for oxygen-binding proteins may be more widely dispersed than previously thought.  相似文献

Raven , Peter H. (Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Claremont, Calif.), and Donald W. Kyhos. Chromosome numbers in Compositae. II. Heleniae. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(9): 842–850. Illus. 1961.—Chromosome counts are now available for 42 of the approximately 55 genera of Compositae, tribe Helenieae, which is predominantly a group of western North America. These chromosome numbers are summarized here at the generic level, and 100 original counts for the tribe are added, including what seem to be the first published reports for the genera Amblyopappus, Baeriopsis, Hulsea, Jaumea, Pericome, Rigiopappus, Trichoptilium, and Venegasia, as well as for many species. The phylogeny of Chaenactis is discussed in the light of published records and 46 original counts, and C. douglasii is shown to include plants in which n = 6, 12, and 18, which differ somewhat morphologically. Helenium has species which have a complete series of aneuploid numbers from n = 13 to n = 17. Chromosome numbers coincide with morphological variability in indicating that Helenieae are a diverse group. More detailed studies of various kinds will be necessary before the genera of Helenieae can be re-aligned effectively, but it is evident that different genera show affinities with various other tribes of the family. Nevertheless, it is thought to be convenient to continue to recognize Helenieae at the tribal level for the present.  相似文献

Orphanodendron is a taxonomically and geographically isolated South American genus of two species. When first described by Barneby and Grimes in 1990, the genus was placed in Leguminosae subfamily Caesalpinioideae, but that placement was doubted and the name Orphanodendron (Gr. orphanos, orphan + dendron, tree) was chosen to reflect the uncertain subfamilial relationship of the genus. In this study, nucleotide sequence data from five Orphanodendron specimens were added to 662 other, previously sampled, Leguminosae taxa representing all three currently recognized subfamilies (Caesalpinioideae, Mimosoideae and Papilionoideae) in a matK maximum parsimony analysis that resolved Orphanodendron as a member of the genistoid s.l. clade of subfamily Papilionoideae. Two additional Bayesian phylogenetic analyses with reduced taxon sampling of plastid (matK combined with trnL-F) and nuclear (ITS) loci strongly support the monophyly of Orphanodendron and unambiguously establish Orphanodendron as a member of the genistoid sensu lato clade. Although our plastid phylogenetic analysis finds relatively low support for a sister-group relationship with the African genus Camoensia, the nuclear-encoded ITS resolves Orphanodendron as sister to the Bowdichia clade with strong support and Camoensia as sister to other core genistoids. The phylogenetic resolution of Orphanodendron as a member of the genistoid s.l. legumes based on nuclear and plastid sequences will undoubtedly advance future evolutionary investigations of this Colombian endemic tropical tree genus.  相似文献

Prior field studies of Alouatta showed the highest frugivory in A. belzebul. During 10 mo between October 1999 and October 2000, we studied the feeding ecology of a group of 7–9 red-handed howlers (Alouatta belzebul discolor) in a primary forest on the banks of a tributary of the Teles Pires River, near Paranaíta, MT, Brazil (9°34S; 56°19W). The howlers used 3 types of habitat: upland (terra firme) forest, flood plain forest (igapó) and palm forest (açaizal). During 45 complete days of observation, the group fed on 67 plant species (N = 2039 feeding records) in 24 families. The 2 most used families were Leguminosae and Moraceae, with 17 species each. Fruits predominated (40–80%) in every month, except June, when young leaves accounted for 54% of the diet. Dialium guianense (Leguminosal, Caesalpinioideae) was the most consumed species. Flower (6%) and mature leaf (5%) consumptions were low. Tree bark, live and decayed wood, and woody twig monthly consumption varied from 0 to 26%, and occurred only in igapó, where they used mostly Macrolobium acaciaefolium (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae), Clitoria amazonum (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) and Licania cf. canescens (Chrysobalanaceae). Our study on Alouatta belzebul discolor complements the high frugivory in A. b. belzebul and documents uncommon dietary items for the species. Although there is intraspecific variation in howler diets and new studies have shown higher frugivory for more folivorous species, Alouatta belzebul seems to be the most frugivorous howler species, in spite of its wide geographical distribution and, in this case, sympatry with Ateles chamek, a frugivore.  相似文献

The Dimorphandra group, as traditionally circumscribed, is a rather diverse assemblage of genera in Leguminosae subfamily Caesalpinioideae that share certain morphological characteristics with the basally branching lineages of subfamily Mimosoideae. It currently comprises 51 species in seven genera: Burkea (1 species), Dimorphandra (26 species), Erythrophleum (10 species), Mora (6 species), Pachyelasma (1 species), Stachyothyrsus (2 species) and Sympetalandra (5 species). This study investigates the pollen morphology of 25 samples from 19 species of all seven genera. Pollen of the Dimorphandra group is small, isopolar, trizonocolporate and released in monads. Apertures are almost equal to polar length, with correspondingly small apocolpial areas. The shape of the aperture apices varies from acute to wide and rounded. Surface ornamentation is psilate, perforate, microreticulate, or perforate‐rugulate. The wall structure is usually columellate with a well developed foot layer. The pollen is small and unspecialised, agreeing with a previously noted pattern of more fixed and homogenous pollen structure in the more derived clades in subfamily Caesalpinioideae, compared with the great diversity of pollen types found in the basally branching lineages.  相似文献

Turner , B. L., W. L. Ellison , and R. M. King . (U. Texas, Austin.) Chromosome numbers in the Compositae. IV. North American species, with phyletic interpretations. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(3): 216–223. Illus. 1961.—Chromosome counts from 116 different plant populations representing 75 taxa (72 species in 39 genera) are reported. These include the first species counts for the following genera: Actinospermum (x = 19), Baltimora (x =15), Calea (x = ca. 17, 18), Calyptocarpus (x = 12), Hecubaea (x = 17), Lagascea (x = 17), Schistocarpha (x = 8), Melanthera (x = 15), Pectis (x = 12), Perymenium (x = 15), Sanvitalia (x = 8), and Trigonospermum (x = 15). Chromosome counts for Chrysopsis trichophylla (n = 5), Cirsium horridulum (n = 16), Hidalgoa ternata (n = 16,) Tridax balbisioides (n = 10), Tridax trilobata (n = 10), and Verbesina crocata (n =18) differ from the reported basic numbers as determined from other species in these genera. Taxa closely related to Tridax procumbens were found to have the diploid number n = 9, thus establishing the polyploid nature (n = 18) of this widespread polymorphic species. When appropriate, the chromosomal information has been related to systematic problems.  相似文献
