Anopheles b. balabacensis mosquitoes were infected with Plasmodium fragile when fed upon splenectomized Macaca mulatta monkeys. Highest level mosquito infections were obtained when feedings were made from 2 to 4 days prior to the peak in the parasitemia. Transmission to M. mulatta monkeys was obtained via mosquito bite on 2 occasions and via intrahepatic and intravenous inoculation of dissected infected salivary glands on 9 occasions. The prepatent periods ranged from 12 to 17 days with a median of 15 days.  相似文献

Seven different anophelines--Anopheles freeborni, An. dirus, An. maculatus, An. atroparvus, An. stephensi, An. albimanus, and An. quadrimaculatus--were shown to be susceptible to infection with the N-3 strain of Plasmodium fieldi. Transmission was obtained via the bites of An. dirus, An. stephensi, and An. maculatus mosquitoes to Macaca mulatta monkeys. Sporozoites dissected from An. freeborni were also shown to be infectious. Anopheles dirus and An. stephensi were the most suitable mosquitoes for transmission studies. Prepatent periods in M. mulatta monkeys following sporozoite inoculation ranged from 9 to 18 days with a mean of 12.3 days. Maximum parasitemias in intact animals following sporozoite inoculation ranged from 5,460 to 32,800 per mm3. Mean maximum parasitemia in splenectomized monkeys inoculated with parasitized blood was 146,000 per mm3.  相似文献

Infections of Plasmodium simium were induced in splenectomized and intact Aotus trivirgatus griseimembra monkeys by parasitized blood and by sporozoites from Anopheles freeborni mosquitoes. Eleven of 13 monkeys developed infection after sporozoite inoculation; prepatent periods ranged from 11 to 25 days (mean 15.8 days). Comparative infectivity studies indicated that An, freeborni mosquitoes were the most susceptible followed by An. stephensi, An. Balabacensis balabacensis, An. maculatus, An. quadrimaculatus, An. culicifacies, and An. albimanus. Studies with 3 pupal phenotypes of An. freeborni indicated that lines containing the green and nonstriped pupal phenotypes were more susceptible than the base colony; the striped phenotype was slightly less susceptible.  相似文献

Exoerythrocytic (EE) schizonts of Plasmodium fragile were found in liver tissue acquired 7, 8, 9, and 10 days following inoculation of Macaca mulatta monkeys with sporozoites from Anopheles balabacensis balabacensis mosquitoes. There was little to distinguish the EE bodies of P. fragile from EE bodies of many of the other species of primate malaria.  相似文献

The West African I strain of Plasmodium falciparum was isolated from a commercial airline pilot who had an overnight stay in Nigeria. Once established in the Aotus trivirgatus griseimembra monkey, the parasite produced high parasitemias and readily infected mosquitoes. Anopheles freeborni and An. maculatus mosquitoes transmitted the infection to additional animals. Infected salivary glands were also seen in An. culcifacies. Comparative infectivity studies indicated the most susceptible mosquito to be An. freeborni, followed by An. culicifacies, An. maculatus, and An. balabacensis balabacensis. Only 2 An. albimanus mosquitoes were infected out of 450 examined. The one A. t. trivirgatus monkey inoculated with this strain had very low levels of parasitemia.  相似文献

Anopheles freeborni mosquitoes were much more heavily infected with the Santa Lucia strain of Plasmodium falciparum from coastal El Salvador than were any of the other species tested. Of 5 strains of A. albimanus examined, the most heavily infected was the CA-109A and the least was the Melara, both of which come from coastal El Salvador. Of the exotic anophelines, the A. maculatus was infected at a slightly higher level than was the A. balabacensis. The incidence of highly infected individual mosquitoes was greatest in the Panama-Escobal strain of A. albimanus from the Republic of Panama; the incidence was lowest in the Melara strain from El Salvador. All strains of A. albimanus developed infected salivary glands, but the A. freeborni and A. maculatus mosquitoes appeared to develop infected glands more effeciently. Infection rates in A. freeborni mosquitoes were highest if mosquitoes were fed on Aotus trivirgatus monkeys between the 19th and 25th days of patent gametocytemia.  相似文献

Infections with the Berok strain of Plasmodium cynomolgi were induced in Macaca mulatta, Macaca fascicularis, Macaca nemestrina, Aotus lemurinus griseimembra, Aotus azarae boliviensis, and Saimiri boliviensis monkeys. Transmission was obtained with sporozoites developing in Anopheles peditaeniatus, Anopheles maculatus, Anopheles quadrimaculatus, Anopheles culicifacies, and Anopheles dirus mosquitoes. This strain of P. cynomolgi offers significant potential for a number of experimental studies. The parasite induces high-density parasite counts in both Old World and New World monkeys; rhesus monkeys readily support the development of gametocytes infectious to different anopheline mosquitoes routinely maintained in the laboratory; the gametocytes are infective to laboratory-maintained Anopheles albimanus, a vector rarely susceptible to plasmodia of Old World monkeys; encapsulated oocysts are produced in An. culicifacies as well as in Anopheles gambiae; and the parasite has been adapted to long-term in vitro culture.  相似文献

A strain of Plasmodium brasilianum was isolated from an Aotus vociferans monkey from Peru. The parasite readily infected Aotus monkeys from Bolivia and Columbia and Saimiri sciureus monkeys from Peru and Bolivia. Highest level mosquito infections were obtained by feeding on the Saimiri monkeys. The most susceptible mosquito was Anopheles freeborni, followed by Anopheles dirus, Anopheles stephensi, Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles culicifacies, Anopheles maculatus and Anopheles albimanus. Anopheles quadrimaculatus were also susceptible to infection. Degenerating oocysts were observed in An. dirus mosquitoes infected with this parasite. Transmission via the bites of infected An. maculatus mosquitoes was obtained to 3 Bolivian Saimiri monkeys; prepatent periods were 27, 27, and 29 days.  相似文献

The Indochina I/CDC strain of Plasmodium falciparum was isolated from a physician returning to the United States after working in the refugee camps along the Thailand-Kampuchean border. The strain was established in splenectomized Aotus monkeys from Colombia after being grown in vitro for 50 days. During the first three passages in Colombian monkeys, the parasites were not infective to Bolivian Aotus monkeys. After six intervening passages in Saimiri sciureus monkeys, the parasites produced high parasitemias in both Colombian and Bolivian Aotus, but gametocytes were no longer produced. Mosquito infections were obtained only during the first three passages in the Colombian monkeys. The most susceptible mosquito was Anopheles freeborni, followed by An. dirus, An. stephensi, An. maculatus, An. culicifacies, and, rarely, An. gambiae. Sporozoites were found in the salivary glands of the An. freeborni, An. dirus, An. stephensi, and An. maculatus.  相似文献

Infections that cause the Gombak and Smithsonian strains of Plasmodium cynomolgi were induced in Macaca mulatta, Aotus lemurinus griseimembra, Aotus nancymai, and Saimiri boliviensis monkeys. Transmission of the Gombak strain to Aotus spp. monkeys was obtained by the injection of sporozoites dissected from the salivary glands of experimentally infected Anopheles dirus and by the bites of infected An. dirus and Anopheles farauti mosquitoes. Two S. boliviensis monkeys were infected via the injection of sporozoites dissected from An. dirus. Prepatent periods in New World monkeys ranged from 14 to 44 days, with a median of 18 days. The Smithsonian strain was transmitted via sporozoites to 1 A. lemurinus griseimembra and 9 A. nancymai monkeys. Prepatent periods ranged from 12 to 31 days.  相似文献

An archived strain of Plasmodium vivax, isolated from Rio Meta, northern Colombia, in 1972 was adapted to grow in splenectomized Aotus lemurinus griseimembra and A. nancymai monkeys. Anopheles freeborni, An. maculatus, An. dirus, An. culicifacies, and An. albimanus were shown to be susceptible to infection by feeding on infected monkeys. Infections were more readily obtained by feeding on A. L. griseimembra than on A. nancymai. Transmission through sporozoites was obtained in an A. l. griseimembra monkey after a prepatent period of 24 days.  相似文献

A live oral vaccine prepared from an Escherichia coli-Shigella flexneri 4b hybrid was administered by gavage to Macaca mulatta. In the three main studies involving 160 monkeys, three doses were used, generally consisting of 5 x 10(9) to 60 x 10(9) cells per dose, with an interval between doses of 6, 7, or 14 days. Rectal swab cultures at the time of the last vaccine dose, and 14 to 58 days later, revealed that the hybrid persisted in the intestinal tract for at least 7 days in 16%, and for at least 21 days in 8%, of the monkeys. Our findings are comparable to those of Formal et al. for shedding of an E. coli-S. flexneri 2a hybrid. Protection studies with the E. coli-S. flexneri 4b hybrid are indicated.  相似文献

Twenty-two Aotus monkeys of different karyotypes were infected with the North Korean strain of Plasmodium vivax. Aotus lemurinus griseimembra animals from Colombia produced higher maximum parasitemias and more readily infected mosquitoes than did Aotus monkeys from Bolivia (K-VI) or Peru (K-V and K-X). Comparative feedings indicated that the most susceptible mosquito species was Anopheles stephensi, followed by An. gambiae, An. dirus, An. freeborni, An. quadrimaculatus, An. culicifacies, and An. maculatus.  相似文献

Forty-four splenectomized Aotus nancymaae monkeys were infected with 6 different strains of Plasmodium cynomolgi, 11 via trophozoites and 33 via sporozoites. Sporozoites from Anopheles dirus, Anopheles freeborni, Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles maculatus, and Anopheles stephensi resulted in prepatent periods ranging from 9 to 39 days (median of 15 days). Importantly, relapse was demonstrated in 5 of 5 sporozoite-induced infections with the Rossan strain following treatment with chloroquine.  相似文献

The Santa Lucia strain of Plasmodium falciparum was isolated from El Salvador, Central America, and established in Aotus trivirgatus monkeys. Transmission from monkey to monkey via the bites of infected Anopheles freeborni, A. maculatus, and A, albimanus mosquitoes was obtained in 20 of 27 attempts. Prepatent periods in the monkeys ranged from 17 to 46 days with a mean of 24.3 days. Parasitemias and mortality were higher following sporozoite inoculation into animals which had been previously infected with P. vivax than in those with no previous malaria experience. Monkeys previously infected with P. vivax and P. cynomolgi had lower maximum parasitemias than those previously infected with P. vivax only.  相似文献

In the years 1967-1977 we diagnosed 23 cases of acute gastric dilatation in monkeys. Fourteen of these animals were Macaca mulatta, five Macaca fascicularis, and one each of Macaca nemestrina, Aotus trivirgatus, Saimiri sciureus, and Colobus guereza. Fourteen of the animals were males, nine were females, and all were adults or subadults. Mortality was 78% (18 of 23 animals). Thirteen of the animals had received on anesthetic, immobilizing, or tranquilizing drug 1-2 days before developing acute gastric dilatation; seven monkeys were overfed, and two had been transferred from one area to another the day prior to developing the disease. Two animals were found dead in their cages with no apparent cause for the gastric dilatation. Five Macaca mulatta and three Macaca fascicularis recovered following treatment, but two Macaca mulatta subsequently succumbed to another episode of acute gastric dilatation. Treatment consisted of evacuation of the stomach, correction of blood volume deficits and acid-base disturbances by administration of appropriate fluids, and supportive therapy for shock.  相似文献

Saimiri boliviensis monkeys were infected by the intravenous injection of 50 sporozoites of the H strain of Plasmodium knowlesi dissected from the salivary glands of Anopheles dirus mosquitoes; prepatent periods were 11, 12, 13, 13, 13, and 16 days. Sporozoites of P. knowlesi stored frozen for 7 days, 53 days, 20 mo, 7 yr and 7 mo, and 11 yr and 5 mo induced infections in Macaca mulatta monkeys with prepatent periods of 7, 6, 8, 10, and 7 days, respectively. After frozen storage for 11 yr and 5 mo, infections were induced in S. boliviensis with prepatent periods of 10-13 days.  相似文献

Sporocysts of Sarcocystis suihominis obtained from human feces were used to infect swine. Heart, tongue, and skeletal muscle from experimentally infected and noninfected control swine were fed via stomach tube to nonhuman primates including chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), and cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca irus). All primates fed infected swine tissues shed sporocysts beginning 13 to 15 days postinfection and were still shedding sporocysts at the conclusion of the experiment, 30 days postinfection. Rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys were fed infected swine tissues a second time and shed sporocysts. All primates remained in good health throughout both experiments and exhibited no unusual clinical signs as a result of infection.  相似文献

Results of qualitative and quantitative studies of prenatal skeletal development in Macaca mulatta are presented. Longitudinal radiographic observations were carried out on 20 monkeys of known gestational age, beginning on 120 days of gestation until the neonatal stage of skeletal development. These studies were based on multiple uterotomies on each pregnant female. The technique described provides accurate data on prenatal bone ossification, and permits an accurate estimation of fetal age in pregnant rhesus monkeys with unknown conception dates.  相似文献

A strain of Plasmodium brasilianum was isolated from a naturally infected Saimiri monkey from Peru and subsequently passaged to 21 splenectomized Saimiri sciureus boliviensis monkeys. Nine of 12 attempts to transmit infection by sporozoite inoculation were successful with prepatent periods ranging from 23 to 41 days. Gametocytes were infective to Anopheles freeborni, Anopheles stephensi, Anopheles dirus, Anopheles maculatus, and Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes. The strain demonstrated a high level of resistance to cure with chloroquine.  相似文献
