Light colors may affect poultry behaviors, well-being and performance. However, preferences of layer pullets for light colors are not fully understood. This study was conducted to investigate the pullet preferences for four light-emitting diode colors, including white, red, green and blue, in a lighting preference test system. The system contained four identical compartments each provided with a respective light color. The pullets were able to move freely between the adjacent compartments. A total of three groups of 20 Chinese domestic Jingfen layer pullets (54 to 82 days of age) were used for the test. Pullet behaviors were continuously recorded and summarized for each light color/compartment into daily time spent (DTS), daily percentage of time spent (DPTS), daily times of visit (DTV), duration per visit, daily feed intake (DFI), daily feeding time (DFT), feeding rate (FR), distribution of pullet occupancy and hourly time spent. The results showed that the DTS (h/pullet·per day) were 3.9±0.4 under white, 1.4±0.3 under red, 2.2±0.3 under green and 4.5±0.4 under blue light, respectively. The DTS corresponded to 11.7% to 37.6% DPTS in 12-h lighting periods. The DTV (times/pullet·per day) were 84±5 under white, 48±10 under red, 88±10 under green and 94±8 under blue light. Each visit lasted 1.5 to 3.2 min. The DFI (g/pullet·per day) were 27.6±1.7 under white, 7.1±1.6 under red, 15.1±1.1 under green and 23.1±2.0 under blue light. The DFT was 0.18 to 0.65 h/pullet·per day and the FR was 0.57 to 0.75 g/min. For most of the time during the lighting periods, six to 10 birds stayed under white, and one to five birds stayed under red, green and blue light. Pullets preferred to stay under blue light when the light was on and under white light 4 h before the light off. Overall, pullets preferred blue light the most and red light the least. These findings substantiate the preferences of layer pullets for light colors, providing insights for use in the management of light-emitting diode colors to meet pullet needs.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to determine whether dim light is interpreted by Japanese quail as subjective day or night, and whether this interpretation depends upon absolute light intensity. Birds were exposed to 24-h days consisting of either bright light (2500-3000 lx) with dim light (0.5-5 lx) or dim light with darkness. Locomotor activity was higher in the brighter photophase, whether it was bright light or dim light, indicating that the birds interpreted the brighter phase as daytime. Dim light produced daytime activity levels when paired with darkness, but it produced nighttime activity when paired with bright light, indicating that activity rhythms are determined by relative not absolute light intensity. Similarly, photostimulation, as measured by growth of the cloacal protrusion area (CPA), depended upon photic context, not absolute light intensity. CPA growth occurred when birds were exposed to 16 h of dim light with 8 h of darkness (16dm:8dk) but not when exposed to 10 h of bright light with 14 h of dim light (10bt:14dm). Constant dim light was stimulatory regardless of previous dim light context. Photostimulation appears to depend upon subjective interpretations of day and night rather than solely upon light intensity.  相似文献

The impacts of unnatural every day cycles (circadian) for 60 days on the histological structure of kidneys and ATPase activities in MF1 mice were studied. The exposure times were 16 h dark, 16 h light, 24 h dark, and 24 h light, and control exposure times were 12 h dark followed by 12 h light. Our results showed an increase in the total ATPase activity of mice in all groups. Additionally, the activity of the enzyme Na+/K+-ATPase was increased after 24 h darkness, 24 h light, and 16 h light exposures compared to control. The enzyme Mg+2-ATPase activities of the groups were higher when exposed to 16 h light, 24 h light, 24 h darkness and 16 h darkness. The activities of total ATPase, Na+/K+-ATPase and Mg+2-ATPase in kidneys were increased in all groups after 24 h light, 24 h darkness, 16 h darkness and 16 h light exposures. Interestingly, the activity of V-type ATPase was reduced after 16 h darkness, 24 h darkness and 16 h light. Taking everything into account, changes in the day by day cycle prompt neurotic changes, enzymatic and histological changes in the kidneys of mice. More studies should be directed to explore the impacts of light and darkness that can prompt these progressions.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the day–night cycle phase is a critical factor modulating diurnal rhythm of isolated honeybee's thermal preference or other factors are involved. The insects were exposed to standard (LD 12:12) and reversed (DL 12:12) photoperiods as well as to constant light and constant darkness conditions. Thermal preference and motor activity of honeybees were recorded for 3–5 days in a thermal gradient system. Under the standard (control) photoperiod conditions mean values of temperature selected by honeybees changed rhythmically within the period of about 24 h. Honeybees, exposed to the modified light–darkness cycle distinctly modified their rhythm of thermal preference. Under the reversed photoperiod conditions period of selected ambient temperature was much longer than before, until a complete reversal of the circadian oscillation was established at the end of the experiment. Experiments performed under constant light and constant darkness yielded undisturbed 24 h rhythms of both ambient temperature selection and locomotor activity. Under these conditions only a slight, nonsignificant flattening of the temperature selection curves was noticed. Both lack of substantial changes in the amplitude and occurring phase shifts of the rhythm, recorded in our experiments suggest its endogenous character. Our results prove that diurnal rhythm of ambient temperature selection by bee workers may be entrained by light–dark cycles. This implies a critical role of photoperiod in the modulation of nychthemeral oscillations of thermal preference in honeybees.  相似文献

The changes of copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, manganese, and triiodothyronine as a result of short- and long-term isothermal exposure to light were determined in the plasma of mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio). Two groups of fish were subject to a 3-mo treatment that consisted of (1) 8h of light followed by 16 h of darkness and (2) 16 h of light followed by 8h of darkness at 25°C. No significant changes were recorded between the two groups at the beginning of the study. After 3 mo, the triiodothyronine and elements levels as well as the growth rates of fish in the long-time exposure period were significantly higher than those in the short-time exposure (p<0.05).  相似文献

Summary Sporelings and protonemata ofCeratodon purpureus were grown in darkness for one to two months. On their exposure to light, starch was observed after 30 minutes but only minor changes occurred in the chloroplast structure during the first hours. After one day in light, the chloroplasts had a structure similar to that of the chloroplasts of light-grown material. The dark-grown material evolved oxygen and assimilated CO2 readily after exposure to light. Nevertheless, maximization of the photosynthetic rate was not achieved until the second day in light, coinciding with the development of light-type chloroplasts. The ultrastructural localization of photosystems I and II revealed much higher activity of PS I in dark-adapted material than in material grown in light, whereas the activity of PS II appeared to be greater in light-grown material.  相似文献

One cultivated and two wild rice varieties have been subjectedto variation in photoperiod and light quality by daily exposureof the seedlings at the four-leaf stage to 8 h of natural daylightfollowed by white incandescent, red, green or blue light for2,4 or 8 h in a temperature and humidity-controlled growth chamber.In some cases far-red irradiation was applied after white orred for 1 and 2 h. The treatments caused marked differencesin growth and reproduction between the cultivated and wild rices.The cultivar Dudkalmi showed extensive tillering after far-redexposure. Earliest flowering was observed with a 16-h dark periodboth in the cultivated and wild rices. Failure of floweringwith and 8-h day and 8-h artificial light of different wavelengthscould be overcome by red or far-red of 1-h duration. The lightquality interacted differently with the dark period in the accelerationof flowering in the three varieties. In another experiment theeffects of interruption of the dark period by a light periodof 2 h after from 4–12 h of darkness in a 24-h cycle werestudied in the two wild rice varieties. Light of different wavelengthsinterposed in the dark period caused variation in tiller numberand stem length in comparison to an uninterrupted dark periodof 16 h. The effect at the beginning of the dark period wasearlier flowering; flowering was delayed by interruption at4 h and inhibited after 8 h but accelerated after a 10- to 12-hdark period. Jellyfish blooms cause problems worldwide, and they may increase with global warming, water pollution, and over fishing. Benthic polyps (scyphistomae) asexually produce buds and small jellyfish (ephyrae), and this process may determine the population size of the large, swimming scyphomedusae. Environmental factors that affect the asexual reproduction rates include food, temperature, salinity, and light. In this study, polyps of Aurelia aurita (L.), which inhabit Tapong Bay, southwest Taiwan, were tested in nine combinations of temperature (20, 25, 30°C) and light intensity (372, 56, and 0 lux) in a 12 h light–12 h dark photoperiod. Production of new buds decreased with warmer temperature and stronger light intensity. Warm temperature accelerated strobilation and increased the daily production of ephyrae. The proportion of ephyrae of total asexual reproduction (new buds + ephyrae) increased dramatically in warmer temperature and more light. Survival was reduced in the highest temperature. Strobilation did not occur in the lowest temperature in darkness. All measures of total asexual reproduction indicated that mid- to high temperatures would lead to faster production of more jellyfish. Continuous high temperatures might result in high polyp mortality. Light affected asexual reproduction less than did temperature, only significantly accelerating the strobilation rate. Because the interactive effects of light and temperature were significant for the time period polyps survived and the potential production of jellyfish polyp−1, combined light and temperature effects probably are important for strobilation in situ. We investigated whether pineal is part of the circadian clock system which regulates circadian rhythms of activity and photosensitivity in the Indian weaver bird (Ploceus philippinus). Two experiments were performed. The first experiment examined the induction of testicular growth, and androgen-dependent beak pigmentation and luteinizing hormone (LH)-specific plumage coloration in pinealectomised (pinx) and sham-operated (sham) birds exposed to short day (8 h light: 16 h darkness, 8L:16D) and long day (16L:8D) for 9 months in the late breeding and early regressive phase (October), or the late regressive and preparatory phase (January) of the annual testicular cycle. As expected, short days were non-stimulatory, and long days stimulated testicular growth, beak pigmentation and plumage coloration. There was no difference in the response between pinx and sham birds subjected to short or long days in October, but the response was enhanced in pinx birds that were subjected to long day in January. In the second experiment circadian behavioral rhythms were studied (activity pattern in singly housed birds) in weaver birds first exposed at two different phases of the annual testicular cycle to a stimulatory photoperiod (12L:12D in preparatory phase or 13L:11D in early breeding phase) and then released into dim continuous light (LLdim). All birds showed synchronization to the light period before and after the pinealectomy; there was no difference in the response between pinx and sham birds. When released into LLdim, sham birds exhibited circadian rhythmicity continuously, whereas pinx birds lost circadian rhythmicity after some cycles. Considered together, these results suggest that circadian clock residing within the pineal gland regulates the circadian rhythm in activity, but not the circadian rhythm involved in photoperiodic induction of the Indian weaver bird.  相似文献

Little is known about how hormones interact in the photoperiodic induction of seasonal responses in birds. In this study, two experiments determined if the treatment with melatonin altered inhibitory effects of prolactin on photoperiodic induction of seasonal responses in the Palearctic-Indian migratory male redheaded bunting Emberiza bruniceps. Each experiment employed three groups (N = 6–7 each) of photosensitive birds that were held under 8 hours light: 16 hours darkness (8L:16D) since early March. In the experiment 1, beginning in mid June 2001, birds were exposed to natural day lengths (NDL) at 27 degree North (day length = ca.13.8 h, sunrise to sunset) for 23 days. In the experiment 2, beginning in early April 2002, birds were exposed to 14L:10D for 22 days. Beginning on day 4 of NDL or day 1 of 14L:10D, they received 10 (experiment 1) or 13 (experiment 2) daily injections of both melatonin and prolactin (group 1) or prolactin alone (group 2) at a dose of 20 microgram per bird per day in 200 microliter of vehicle. Controls (group 3) received similar volume of vehicle. Thereafter, birds were left uninjected for the next 10 (experiment 1) or 9 days (experiment 2). All injections except those of melatonin were made at the zeitgeber time 10 (ZT 0 = time of sunrise, experiment 1; time of lights on, experiment 2); melatonin was injected at ZT 9.5 and thus 0.5 h before prolactin. Observations were recorded on changes in body mass, testicular growth and feather regeneration.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Eclosion in Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) occurs near dawn. The rhythm of eclosion persists in both darkness and constant light of high intensity (490μW cm-2) with a period close to 24h. The sensitivity to light of the circadian clock controlling eclosion varies greatly according to the stage of the life cycle. During larval life the free running rhythm in darkness can be phase shifted by light pulses of 100μW cm-2 intensity, with the transition from a Type 1 phase response curve to a Type 0, occurring with pulses of between 1 and 8h. Extending the last light period of LD to 24 h followed by constant darkness resets the phase of the rhythm by 12h, a transition from constant light to constant darkness initiates rhythmicity in flies made arrhythmic by being reared from eggs collected from adults maintained in constant light. After pupariation, the rhythm is relatively insensitive to light. Rhythmicity is sometimes induced by a transition from constant light to constant darkness, but the phase of the rhythm is not shifted by extending the last light period of LD before entering constant darkness. Repeated LD cycles applied after pupariation initiate and entrain the rhythm.  相似文献

-The effect of photoperiod on growth of juvenile giant freshwater prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man, was tested. The prawns were divided into four groups and each group was reared under one of the following light-dark conditions: continuous darkness (L0:D24), 12 hr light: 12 hr dark (L12:D12), 16 hr light: 8 hr dark (L16:D8), and 20 hr light: 4 hr dark (L20:D4). Body size was determined at the age of 45, 75, and 110 days by measuring total length, orbital length, and carapace length; body weight was determined at the age of 110 days. At 110 days of age, the prawns reared under L0:D24 photoperiod were significantly longer and heavier than those reared under other light-dark conditions. The survival rate of the prawns reared under L0:D24 photoperiod was also higher than that of other groups. This study indicates a positive effect of continuous darkness on growth and survival rate of juvenile giant freshwater prawns, M. rosenbergii.  相似文献

To test for the effects of far‐red light on preventing budset in Picea abies , seedlings of six populations originating from latitudes between 67°N and 47°N were grown for 4–8 weeks in continuous incandescent (metal halogen) light at 300 µmol m−2 s−1 and 20°C and then transferred, at the same temperature, to a daily regime of 8 h incandescent light (300 µmol m−2 s−1) followed by 16 h cool white fluorescent light (40 µmol m−2 s−1). (Cool white lamps are deficient in far‐red light, with a R/FR ratio of 7.5 compared with 2.0 for the incandescent lamps.) All the seedlings from 67° and 80% of those from 64° stopped extension growth and set terminal buds within 28 days of the change of regime. The seedlings from 61° and further south continued growing, as did control seedlings from 67° grown as above but with incandescent light at 20 µmol m−2 s−1 replacing cool white illumination. To distinguish between a clinal and ecotypic pattern of variation, the interval between 64° and 59° was investigated by growing populations originating from that area in the same regimes as before. After 28 days in the cool white day‐extension regime, the percentage budset was 86 for the population from 64°, 0 for the population from 59° and 25–50 for the intermediate populations; i.e. the populations showed a clinal variation in requirement for far‐red light according to latitude. Thus northern populations of Picea abies appear to behave as 'light‐dominant' plants for the photoperiodic control of extension growth and budset, whereas the more southern populations behave as 'dark‐dominant' plants.  相似文献

Eighty Lohmann Brown layer hens were reared in floor pens fitted with perches from 1 day of age. After the peak of lay (25 weeks of age), their ability to jump to and from perches in different light environments was assessed in two experiments using digital video techniques that allowed detailed measurements of take-off, flight and landing behaviours.In Experiment 1, birds jumped up or down (angles of 10 and 18°) between two horizontal perches that were separated by a gap of 60 cm under different lighting conditions (5, 10 or 20 lux; incandescent or high- or low-frequency fluorescent). In Experiment 2, the horizontal distance was increased to 80 cm and contrast between perch and background was varied. Fifty-two hens (65%) achieved the training criterion for Experiment 1: jumping a 60 cm gap five times of which three in a row. Thirty-two of these hens (62%) subsequently failed to achieve the 80 cm jump criterion for Experiment 2.In Experiment 1, birds took off sooner (P<0.001), turned their heads further downward relative to the landing perch (P<0.001), beat their wings more often during flight (P<0.001), and took longer to achieve balance (P<0.001) when jumping downward rather than upward. In Experiment 2, refusals to jump, and clumsy or missed landings, occurred more frequently on downward than upward jumps (P<0.001). These behaviours were unaffected by lighting conditions, or by the amount of contrast between the perch and its background.In conclusion, behaviours indicating inaccurate control of landing were more frequent on downward than on upward jumps (P<0.001). However, these behaviours were not affected by light intensity, light type or contrast. The results suggest that there is a difference between the two types of jumps in the risk of injury to hens housed in aviaries where perches must be used to gain access to resources.  相似文献

Extension growth of secondary needles is under photoperiodic control in Pinus sylvestris . To test for the effects of far-red light on maintaining this extension growth, seedlings of six populations originating from latitudes between 57° and 67°N were raised for 11 weeks in continuous incandescent (metal halogen) light at 300 µmol m−2 s−1 and 20°C and then transferred at the same temperature to a daily regime of 8 h incandescent light (230 µmol m−2 s−1) followed by a 16 h day extension with cool white fluorescent light (40 µmol m−2 s−1, R/FR ratio 7.5) or with incandescent lamps (20 µmol m−2 s−1, R/FR ratio 2.0). For the seedlings from the three populations north of 64°, needle extension growth over 42 days in the FR-poor day extension treatment was lower by up to 40% than in the FR-rich day extension treatment, whereas for the seedlings from the three southern populations the needle extension growth was similar in both day extension treatments. The requirement for FR in day extensions is characteristic of 'light-dominant' photoperiodic control mechanisms. It appears that P. sylvestris changes from dark-dominant night timekeeping to light-dominant day timekeeping with increasing latitude, as with the photoperiodic control of budset in Picea abies .  相似文献

More energy-efficient, readily dimmable, long-lasting and more affordable light-emitting diode (LED) lights are increasingly finding applications in poultry production facilities. Despite anecdotal evidence about the benefits of such lighting on bird performance and behavior, concrete research data were lacking. In this study, a commercial poultry-specific LED light (dim-to-blue, controllable correlated color temperature (CCT) from 4500 to 5300 K) and a typical compact fluorescent light (CFL) (soft white, CCT=2700 K) were compared with regards to their effects on growing performance, activity levels, and feather and comb conditions of non-beak-trimmed W-36 pullets during a 14-week rearing period. A total of 1280-day-old pullets in two successive batches, 640 birds each, were used in the study. For each batch, pullets were randomly assigned to four identical litter-floor rooms equipped with perches, two rooms per light regimen, 160 birds per room. Body weight, BW uniformity (BWU), BW gain (BWG) and cumulative mortality rate (CMR) of the pullets were determined every 2 weeks from day-old to 14 weeks of age (WOA). Activity levels of the pullets at 5 to 14 WOA were delineated by movement index. Results revealed that pullets under the LED and CFL lights had comparable BW (1140±5 g v. 1135±5 g, P=0.41), BWU (90.8±1.0% v. 91.9±1.0%, P=0.48) and CMR (1.3±0.6% v. 2.7±0.6%, P=0.18) at 14 WOA despite some varying BWG during the rearing. Circadian activity levels of the pullets were higher under the LED light than under the CFL light, possibly resulting from differences in spectrum and/or perceived light intensity between the two lights. No feather damage or comb wound was apparent in either light regimen at the end of the rearing period. The results contribute to understanding the impact of emerging LED lights on pullets rearing which is a critical component of egg production.  相似文献

Three experimental manipulations were conducted to assess the influence of heat source selection and active thermoregulation on ultraviolet (UV) light exposure in captive spiny-tailed iguanas (Oplurus cuvieri) at the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Four replicates per manipulation were conducted on six individual lizards. All animals were tested in a separate enclosure to which they were acclimated before observations. Data on choice of thermal sources were collected during the first 2 hr of light, when lizards were actively thermoregulating. Animals were allowed to choose between incandescent light, UV light and a non-light heat source (thermotube) in different combinations. Recorded temperatures close to the incandescent light (37°C) were always significantly higher than at the thermotube (33°C) and at the UV light (29°C). Manipulation 1 offered the animals a choice of an UV light and an incandescent light as thermal sources. Manipulation 2 presented animals with the thermal choices in Manipulation 1, but substrates under each source in Manipulation 1 were switched. In Manipulation 3, animals could choose between an incandescent light and the thermotube. All studied lizards were significantly more attracted to the incandescent light than to the UV light or thermotube. Incandescent light elicited a significantly higher proportion of basking behaviors in all individuals than the other sources. A high proportion of time basking was also spent in front of the thermotube but fewer individuals and less time were spent basking under the UV light. Heat source selection was generally found to be independent of substrate. Management applications of this preference are suggested for juvenile diurnal heliothermic iguanids.   • Seed germination of Citrullus colocynthis, as in many other species of Cucurbitaceae, is inhibited by light, particularly at low temperatures. Germination response to light and temperature has been attributed to day length and temperature during seed maturation. This study assessed the effects of these factors on the germination response of C. colocynthis to temperature and light quality.
  • Ripe fruits were collected from natural habitats during December and February and germinated at three temperatures (15/25, 20/30 and 25/35 °C) in five light treatments (dark, white light and Red:Far Red (R:FR) ratios of 0.30, 0.87 and 1.19). Additionally, unripe fruits were also collected from natural habitats and completed their maturation in growth chambers under different day lengths (6, 16 and 24 h of darkness) at 10/20 °C, and in darkness at both 10/20 °C and 25/35 °C. Mature seeds of the different treatments were germinated in the same five light treatments at 15/25 °C.
  • Germination was significantly higher in the dark than that in any light treatment. Seeds matured at higher temperatures (i.e. seeds from the December collection and those matured at 25/35 °C) had significantly higher germination than those matured at lower temperatures (i.e. seeds from the February collection and those matured at 10/20 °C). Dark germination was significantly higher for the December collection than for the February collection. Seeds of the two collections germinated in the dark only at 15/25 °C. However, seeds matured in a growth chamber at 10/20 °C in darkness germinated at 15/25 °C in all light treatments, except for the R:FR ratio 0.30. Seeds of the different treatments failed to germinate in FR‐rich light.
  • This study demonstrates that both temperature and day length during seed maturation play significant roles in the germination response of C. colocynthis. Additionally, the dark requirement for germination is likely beneficial for species with the larger seeds, such as C. colocynthis, which produce bigger seedlings that are able to emerge from deep soils and are competitively superior under dense vegetation and resource‐limited conditions.

A change in photoperiod has been implicated in triggering a transition from an active to a quiescent state in Antarctic krill. We examined this process at the molecular level, to identify processes that are affected when passing a photoperiodic threshold. Antarctic krill captured in the austral autumn were divided into two groups and immediately incubated either under a photoperiod of 12 h light:12 h darkness (LD), simulating the natural light cycle, or in continuous darkness (DD), simulating winter. All other conditions were kept identical between incubations. After 7 days of adaptation, krill were sampled every 4 h over a 24 h period and frozen. Total RNA was extracted from the heads and pooled to construct a suppression subtractive hybridisation library. Differentially expressed sequences were identified and annotated into functional categories through database sequence matching. We found a difference in gene expression between LD and DD krill, with LD krill expressing more genes involved in functions such as metabolism, motor activity, protein binding and various other cellular activities. Eleven of these genes were examined further with quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses, which revealed that expression levels were significantly higher in LD krill. The genes affected by simulated photoperiodic change are consistent with known features of quiescence, such as a slowing of moult rate, a lowering of activity levels and a reduction in metabolic rate. The expression of proteases involved in apolysis, where the old cuticle separates from the epidermis, showed particular sensitivity to photoperiod and point to the mechanism by which moult rate is adjusted seasonally. Our results show that key processes are already responding at the molecular level after just 7 days of exposure to a changed photoperiodic cycle. We propose that krill switch rapidly between active and quiescent states and that the photoperiodic cycle plays a key role in this process.  相似文献
