Thirty-four measurements of the deciduous dentition in 21 fetal rhesus monkeys from diabetic mothers (FDM) and 36 nondiabetic fetuses were compared in order to assess the effects of induced maternal diabetes on the teeth of third-trimester fetuses. After exclusion of 14 variates due to significant age-related variation, univariate statistical analysis suggested a trend toward smaller teeth in the FDMs. Multivariate discriminant function analysis indicated not only a clear separation between the two groups, with molar breadths and some incisor lengths and breadths serving as the best discriminators, but also that the deciduous dental dimensions in FDMs are smaller than in nondiabetic fetuses.  相似文献

The present study explored the effects of mixture of avermectin and imidacloprid on the level of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and mortality of Copera annulata larvae. The results showed that the mortality of larval damselflies treated with different concentrations of insecticide did not differ significantly. However, we found that the levels of FA of two traits were significantly different with different treatments but the others did not show any differences. Explicitly, FA of two traits increased with increasing pesticide concentration. There was a significantly negative relationship between first femur length and the absolute difference between its right and left sides. There was no relationship with respect to the absolute difference between the right and left sides of all traits and their body size. FA was not associated with mortality. Our results emphasized that insecticide had potential effects on bilaterally symmetrical traits of damselfly larvae, although they were no longer treated with insecticide during the last rearing.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 44–50.  相似文献

Metric (e.g., body size) and meristic (e.g., bristle number) traits are of general use in quantitative genetic studies, and the phenotypic variance is subdivided into a genetic and a non-genetic environmental component. The non-genetic variance may have two origins: a common garden effect between individuals and a developmental instability within the same individual. Developmental instability may be studied by considering the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) between the two sides of the body. The isofemale line technique is a convenient method for investigating the architecture of natural populations but has been rarely implemented for investigating FA. In this paper, we use this experimental design for analyzing four meristic traits in eight populations of the cosmopolitan Zaprionus indianus. A study of the correlation between left and right side of each line revealed that almost 90% of the variability was due to a developmental noise, while a much higher correlation among the means of the lines from the same population was observed. A slight trend toward a directional asymmetry was observed: more thoracic bristles on the left side. Four kinds of indices, scaled or non-scaled to the mean were used for comparing the different traits. Unscaled values (mean absolute values or standard deviation of each line) revealed a linear increase with the means. Interestingly the results of ovariole number were included in the same regression. With the scaled indices (mean absolute divided by each individual value or stadard deviation devided by the mean), the differences among traits were considerably decreased, but still remained significant. The mean FA of the various traits were not correlated, suggesting that each trait harbors its own developmental stability. The CVs of FA were high with a magnitude similar to those of the trait themselves, slightly less than 10%. Finally, even with the isofemale line design, which is a powerful means for unravelling slight genetic variations, we did not to find any clear indication of a genetic component of FA under the optimal environmental conditions used in this study.  相似文献

Gudgeon Gobio gobio (Cyprinidae) were collected monthly from the Vlara Stream (Czech Republic) during 2004 and examined for the presence of the ectoparasite Paradiplozoon homoion (Diplozoidae; Monogenea). Over 26% of P. homoion showed abnormalities of the attachment sclerites, indicating either a stressful environment or that the quality of the fish host was suboptimal for parasite development. Here, the hypotheses that parasite abundance and the occurrence of morphological abnormalities are correlated with fluctuating asymmetry (FA, the random deviation from the perfect bilateral symmetry) in its fish host were tested. The FA and morphological abnormality are estimators of developmental instability. To estimate fish developmental instability nine meristic and two morphometric bilateral characters on the right and the left sides of the fish were measured. In general, there was no correlation between mean fish FA and parasite abundance or the proportion of parasites with abnormalities. There was, however, a significant relationship between the proportion of abnormal P. homoion and the number of asymmetric meristic traits per individual fish. This study thus indicates that developmental instability of P. homoion , measured as morphological abnormality of the attachment apparatus, is only weakly dependent on the fish quality as measured by FA.  相似文献

The genetic basis of fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a measure of random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry, has been the subject of much recent work. In this paper we compare two perspectives on the quantitative genetic analysis of FA and directional asymmetry (DA). We call these two approaches the character-state model and the environmental responsiveness model. In the former approach, the right and left sides are viewed as separate traits whose genetic coupling is manifested by the genetic correlation. This model leads to the relationship, h2(DA) = h2[(1-rA)/(1-rp)), where h2 is the heritability of each component trait (assumed to be the same), rA and rp are the genetic and phenotypic correlations between traits, respectively. Simulation shows that, under this model, the heritability of FA is considerably less than that of DA, except when heritabilities are very close to zero. The environmental responsiveness model permits genetic variance in FA even when the genetic correlation between traits is + 1. Simulation shows that under this model the heritability of FA can be uncoupled from that of DA. The additive and nonadditive components of the component (right and left) traits, their DA and FA values are estimated using a diallel cross of seven inbred lines of the sand cricket, Gryllus firmus. Four leg measurements were made and both the individual DA and FA values and the compound measures DASUM and CFA estimated. The heritabilities of the compound measures are slightly larger than the individual estimates. Dominance variance is observed in the individual traits but predicted to be an even smaller component of the phenotypic variance than the additive genetic variance. The estimated values confirm this, although a previous study has demonstrated that dominance variance is present. Because the heritabilities of FA are generally larger than those of DA, which never exceed 0.02, the environmental responsiveness model is more consistent with the data than the character-state model. A review of other data suggests that both sources of variation might be found in some species.  相似文献

In this study, we explored the effects of pesticide on fluctuating asymmetry (FA) levels and mortality of Ceriagrion sp. larvae. The results showed that the mortality of larval damselflies treated with pesticide was significantly higher than that treated with tap water which had been aerated for 48 h, but there were no significant differences among mortality of larvae treated with different concentrations of pesticide. Meanwhile, we found that the level of FA of the first tibia length, one of the seven bilaterally symmetrical traits (First femur length, First tibia length, Second femur length, Second tibia length, Third femur length, Third tibia length and Prementum width), differed significantly with different treatments, whereas the others did not show any significant differences. The Bonferroni (Dunn) t Tests revealed that FA of the first tibia length at 15 × 10−9 mgl−1 was significantly higher than that at 1.5 × 10−9 mgl−1 and control. There was no significant relationship between trait size and the absolute difference between their right and left sides. There was also no significant relationship between body size and the absolute difference between right and left sides. Trait size was significantly positively correlated with body size. FA was not associated with mortality. Therefore, we concluded that FA of the first tibia length of Ceriagrion sp. larvae may be induced by sublethal doses of pesticides. That is to say, its FA may be regarded as an indicator of reflecting the level of pesticide stress. Handling editor: K. Martens  相似文献

After stroke, white matter integrity can be affected both locally and distally to the primary lesion location. It has been shown that tract disruption in mirror’s regions of the contralateral hemisphere is associated with degree of functional impairment. Fourteen patients suffering right hemispheric focal stroke (S) and eighteen healthy controls (HC) underwent Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) and neuropsychological assessment. The stroke patient group was divided into poor (SP; n = 8) and good (SG; n = 6) cognitive recovery groups according to their cognitive improvement from the acute phase (72 hours after stroke) to the subacute phase (3 months post-stroke). Whole-brain DWI data analysis was performed by computing Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) followed by Tract Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS). Assessment of effects was obtained computing the correlation of the projections on TBSS skeleton of Fractional Anisotropy (FA) and Radial Diffusivity (RD) with cognitive test results. Significant decrease of FA was found only in right brain anatomical areas for the S group when compared to the HC group. Analyzed separately, stroke patients with poor cognitive recovery showed additional significant FA decrease in several left hemisphere regions; whereas SG patients showed significant decrease only in the left genu of corpus callosum when compared to the HC. For the SG group, whole brain analysis revealed significant correlation between the performance in the Semantic Fluency test and the FA in the right hemisphere as well as between the performance in the Grooved Pegboard Test (GPT) and theTrail Making Test-part A and the FA in the left hemisphere. For the SP group, correlation analysis revealed significant correlation between the performance in the GPT and the FA in the right hemisphere.  相似文献

Aim Local populations from different geographical regions may differ in the selection regimes to which they are exposed. Differences in environmental factors and population density may affect the relative importance of different selective forces (e.g. natural vs. sexual selection). We suggest a direction of investigation concerned with the developmental instability of morphological traits. The goal is to disclose putative small‐scale geographical differences in the evolutionary forces, which may be hard to detect. Location Craniometrical investigations were carried out on ninety‐eight skulls and teeth of the Eurasian badger (Meles meles) collected during the period 1995–97 from three different populations in Denmark. One of these thrives at low population density, whereas the two others are characterized by high local density. Methods The skulls were investigated for developmental instability (DI) using fluctuating asymmetry (FA) as its estimator. FA was measured on canines, molars, premolar teeth and other skull and mandible traits. For the statistical analyses, we applied nonparametric permutation tests. Results Evidence was found suggesting differentiation among populations in mean degree of FA, and the FA values measured on canines were higher in the high‐density populations. FA of the canines was significantly higher in males than females, in contrast to FA of the other traits. Evidence of a negative relationship between canine size and their FA was found, whereas no significant correlations were found between the molar and premolar teeth measures and their FA. Main conclusions Our results suggest that canines could be under directional selection stemming from intrasexual competition, which may be stronger in high‐density zones. The other teeth investigated seem to be under a stabilizing regime hence their FA is mainly affected by environmental stresses. The negative relationship between canine size and FA found in males suggests the capacity of badgers to respond in an evolutionary way to environmental changes, despite the low genetic variability previously found at the molecular level.  相似文献

Spy cave (Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, Belgium) is reputed for the two adult Neandertal individuals discovered in situ in 1886. Recent reassessment of the Spy collections has allowed direct radiocarbon dating of these individuals. The sorting of all of the faunal collections has also led to the discovery of the remains of a Neandertal child, Spy VI. This individual is represented by two mandibular corpus fragments. The left fragment is the most complete and both sides preserve the mental foramen. Four deciduous teeth are associated with these mandibular remains: three incisors and one canine. The lower left canine (Spy 645a) conjoins with the corresponding alveolar socket in the left part of the mandible. Following extant standards, the developmental stage of the preserved teeth indicate an age at death of about one and a half years. In addition to performing a classical morphometric comparative study of the mandible and teeth, we have evaluated the dental tissue proportions using high-resolution microtomographic techniques. Our results show that Spy VI generally falls within the Neandertal range of variation. However, this specimen also exhibits particular traits, notably in the dental internal structural organization, which reveals that variation in the immature Neandertal variation is larger than what was variation currently represented by the available fossil record. These observations demonstrate the need for investigating the frequency and expression of immature Neandertal traits in fossil anterior teeth, as well as their temporal and geographic variation. Direct radiocarbon dating of the Spy VI specimen has been conducted in two different laboratories. The results of Spy VI confirm the age previously determined for the two adults, making the Spy Neandertal remains the youngest ever directly dated in northwest Europe.  相似文献

Variation in the subtle differences between the right and left sides of bilateral characters or fluctuating asymmetry (FA) has been considered as an indicator of an organism’s ability to cope with genetic and environmental stresses during development. However, due to inconsistency in the results of empirical studies, the relationship between FA and stress has been the subject of intense debate. In this study, we investigated whether stress caused by artificial bidirectional selection for body size has any effect on the levels of FA of different morphological traits in Drosophila ananassae. The realised heritability (h2) was higher in low-line females and high-line males, which suggests an asymmetrical response to selection for body size. Further, the levels of FA were compared across 10 generations of selection in different selection lines in both sexes for sternopleural bristle number, wing length, wing-to-thorax ratio, sex comb-tooth number and ovariole number. The levels of FA differed significantly among generations and selection lines but did not change markedly with directional selection. However, the levels of FA were higher in the G10 generation (at the end of selection) than G0 (at the start of selection) but lower than the G5 generation in different selection lines, suggesting that the levels of FA are not affected by the inbreeding generated during the course of selection. Also, the levels of FA in the hybrids of high and low lines were significantly lower than the parental selection lines, suggesting that FA is influenced by hybridisation. These results are discussed in the framework of the literature available on FA and its relationship with stress.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is claimed both to provide a means of evaluating developmental stability, and to reflect an individual's quality or the stress experienced during development. FA refers to the nondirectional variation between left and right sides, whereas directional asymmetry (DA) refers to a significant directional variation between the sides. We studied four eyespots on the dorsal forewing of the tropical butterfly, Bicyclus anynana. Two of the eyespots were specified by a mutant allele, Spotty, that was fixed in the stock. These eyespots showed higher FA than the two flanking, wild-type eyespots, although they are all formed by the same developmental pathway. We applied artificial selection for lower FA of the novel eyespots in an attempt to increase their developmental stability. There was significant variation present in individual FA in our study. However, this did not change as a result of the artificial selection. Most of the variation in FA can be accounted for by individual differences in developmental stability rather than by the applied selection or by environmental variation. Thus, it was not possible to produce any increased developmental stability of the novel eyespots by selecting for low FA. The estimates of realized heritability for both FA and DA of each eyespot were not significantly different from zero. The results suggest that FA provides little, if any, potential for exploring the mechanistic basis of developmental stability.  相似文献

The aims of the present study are to 1) determine and describe levels of dental fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in a highly endogamous human group; 2) evaluate the effects of various FA measures on perceived FA levels and their interrelationships; 3) study the connections between dental variables (tooth size, class, position, type, location and dimension) and FA levels; and 4) estimate the interrelationships between dental FA measures. The study was carried out on 242 Bedouin boys aged 5 to 14 years. The results demonstrate that the main variables influencing dental FA levels within this population are tooth class (incisors, canine, premolars, molars) and position (mesial, distal) and that the interaction between the two is significant. When sample sizes are large enough and individual measures are needed for the statistical analysis, the use of a computational method based on absolute values is legitimate. Clear relationships between some FA dental traits are discerned though principal-components analysis. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The major aim of this study was to test three hypotheses: 1) more complex traits of the hand are less prone to developmental insults and therefore show lower fluctuating asymmetry (FA) as compared with simple traits; 2) the manifestation of FA correlates with the variability of the trait (i.e., CV); and 3) FA is an organ-wide property, and therefore a concordance exists between the FA measures of different traits in hand bones. Seventy-two bilateral measurements of hand bones, were made from plain-film radiographs of 365 cadavers. A complex trait was considered as the total length of the three phalanges of a finger and their contiguous metacarpals. Simple traits were considered to be the lengths of individual bone that made up the complex trait. The following results were obtained: 1) on the average simple traits, composing the complex trait, show much higher FA than the corresponding complex trait, but this result is expected if there is no correlation (or low correlation) between FA of simple traits within the complex trait, due to random direction of right-left differences; 2) strong and highly significant correlation was observed between FA and CV of studied traits, regardless of sex and age of individuals; and 3) the majority of FA measurements of hand bones showed no correlation. However, correlations between some sets of FA traits were highly significant. They were interpreted, although not specifically tested, as the result of a tight relationship between traits related not only developmentally but also by active performance of the same function. A labiogingival notch appearing on the enamel of maxillary central incisors seems to be a potential factor for compromised gingival and dental health. The objective of the survey was to describe the phenomenon and its prevalence in a random Israeli population. One thousand eight hundred eighty children with fully erupted permanent incisors were clinically examined. The appearance of the labiogingival notch on the enamel surface of the maxillary central incisors was determined. Two depth categories of the phenomenon were distinguished by probing. The possible differences in the prevalence of the labial notch appearance, between the sexes as well as between the right and left sides, were statistically evaluated. The prevalence between the right and left sides, were statistically evaluated. The prevalence of the labial notch on at least one incisor in the population examined was 6.5% (5.1% unilaterally and 1.4% bilaterally). No significant difference between the sexes regarding the appearance of this phenomenon was found. The shallow notch was similarly distributed between the right and left sides in both sexes. However, the deeper malformations appeared significantly more on the left side in boys (P less than 0.05) and in girls (P less than 0.01). The gingivae tended to follow the enamel contour; however, only in few cases was gingival inflammation or incipient caries diagnosed. It was concluded that the labio-gingival notch is not a rare phenomenon, and it should be given special attention to prevent possible damage to the dental and gingival tissues.  相似文献

The genetic basis of fluctuating asymmetry (FA), or nondirectional variation in the subtle differences between left and right sides of bilateral characters, continues to be of considerable theoretical interest. FA generally has been thought to arise from random noise during development and therefore to have a largely or entirely environmental origin. Whereas additive genetic variation for FA generally has been small and often insignificant, a number of investigators have hypothesized that interactions between loci, or epistasis, significantly influence FA. We tested this hypothesis by conducting a whole-genome scan to detect any epistasis in FA of centroid size in the mandibles of more than 400 mice from an F2 intercross population formed from crossing the Large (LG/J) and Small (SM/J) inbred strains. Genotypic deviations were imputed at each site 2 cM apart on all 19 autosomes, and these and centroid size asymmetry values were used in canonical correlation analyses for each of the 171 possible pairs of 19 autosomes to identify the most probable sites for epistasis. Epistasis for centroid size asymmetry was abundant, occurring far more often than was expected by chance alone (there were 30 separate instances of epistasis at the 0.001 significance level, when only two were expected by chance alone). The contributions of epistasis from 30 pairwise combinations of loci tended to suppress the additive and dominance genetic variance, but greatly increased the epistatic genetic variance for FA in centroid size given the intermediate allele frequencies of an F2 intercross population.  相似文献

Contemporary approaches that use fluctuating asymmetry (FA) as a possible target for natural and sexual selection are based on the premise that FA is a quantifiable expression of developmental instability (DI) that is inherited. Previous work with Drosophila buzzatii found that male mating success was correlated positively to body size (wing length) and negatively to FA, but these relationships seem to be environmentally induced. Heritability of FA was low and not significantly different from zero, but statistical power was also estimated to be very low and, hence, no conclusive evidence could be obtained. A large half‐sib mating design is used here to examine the relationships of different aspects of development for wing size. Consistently with previous findings, I found high heritabilities for wing length (WL) and wing width (WW), and positive correlations between both traits. Heritabilities of FA (FAWL, FAWW) were low (0.037) but significantly different from zero, and the genetic correlation between FAWL and FAWW was estimated as ?1 because the absolute value for the genetic covariance was similar in magnitude or even larger than the estimated genetic variances of both traits. This suggests that these two traits should be considered to be the same character. The between‐trait phenotypic correlation in FA, which reduces to the repeatability in this situation, was positive and statistically significant thus rendering an estimate of heritability for DI in D. buzzatii of . Nevertheless, the fact that left/right wing sizes were found to be determined by the same set of genes is difficult to reconcile with the presence of special genetic mechanisms that stabilize left/right development in this species. A qualitatively different pattern for asymmetry was observed when the nonlinear composite character wing area (WA ≈ WL × WW) was used, and . Although the results could be made compatible with the existence of a diallelic locus with antagonistic pleiotropic effects on FAWL and FAWW that combine multiplicatively to produce overdominance for FAWA, the available evidence is extremely weak at best. Finally, a test to the null hypothesis of a nongenetic basis of FA, particularly relevant to those situations when directional asymmetry may be heritable, is suggested.  相似文献

Patterns of approximal wear in cheek teeth of a Romano-British population   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The approximal surfaces of premolars and molars of 376 adult British-Romano skulls were examined for wear facets. The type of wear was designated as convex, concave, sigmoid, or flat, and the degree was categorised on a three-point scale. Concave wear facets were more frequently seen in the older age groups, but the type of wear was similar on right and left sides. Taking all teeth together or as individual tooth types, concave wear was significantly more likely on mesial rather than distal surfaces. The degree of wear was age related and similar on right and left sides in both males and females. It is suggested that the distribution of concave facets may be related to movements between adjacent teeth.  相似文献

Discrete dental trait asymmetry was scored on four Mexican Indian and two Afro-Belizean groups. The Mexican populations show significantly higher mean asymmetry than the two populations from Belize even though the Belizean groups have larger teeth. Point biserial coefficients of correlation between asymmetry of discrete traits and tooth size is low and in most cases not significant. This study indicates that populational and ethnic differences exist in the asymmetry of discrete traits, suggesting that these traits may be used to investigate the etiology of dental asymmetry, and the relative roles of genetics and environment.  相似文献

Comparing fluctuating asymmetry (FA) between different traits can be difficult because traits vary at different scales. FA is generally quantified either as the variance of the difference between left and right (σ2L?R) or the mean of the absolute value of this difference (μ|R?L|). Corrections for scale differences are obtained by dividing by trait size mean. We show that a third index, one minus the correlation coefficient between left and right (1 ? rL,R), is equivalent to σ2L?R standardized by trait size variance. The indices are compared with Monte‐Carlo simulations. All achieve the expected correction for scale differences. High type I error rates (false indication of differences) occur only for σ2L?R and μ|R?L| if trait sizes close to or below 0 occur. 1 ? rL,R with a bootstrap test has always low error rates. Recommendation of the index to be used should be based on whether standardization of FA by trait size mean or trait size variance is preferred. A survey of 36 traits in the Speckled Wood Butterfly (Pararge aegeria) indicated that σ2L?R is slightly higher correlated to trait size variance than to trait size mean. Thus 1 ? rL,R seems to be the superior index and should be reported when FA of different traits is compared.  相似文献
