Marine planktonic copepods are important grazers on harmful algae (HA) species of phytoplankton, and copepods are major entry points for vectorial intoxication of pelagic food webs with HA toxins. Previous reviews (Turner and Tester, 1997, Turner et al., 1998a, Turner, 2006) summarized information on HA interactions with zooplankton grazers, and vectorial intoxication of pelagic food webs, up through approximately 2005. Accordingly, this review will address primarily studies published during the last decade. It will concentrate on generic issues in the developing field of HA:grazer interactions, such as the extent to which HA toxins serve as copepod grazing deterrents, induction of HA grazing deterrents by exposure to copepods, copepod selective feeding to avoid ingesting HA taxa versus non-selective feeding on HA taxa, possible biogeographic aspects of the effects of HA toxins on copepods, impact of copepod grazing on HA bloom development and termination, the role of copepods as entry points for vectorial intoxication of pelagic food webs with HA toxins, and possible reasons and remedies for the highly-variable and conflicting results reported for many studies of copepod grazing on various HA species.  相似文献

The development and metabolism of epilimnetic plankton from a highly humic lake was followed in late summer, when the predominant zooplankton species, Daphnia longispina, was very abundant (ca. 200 ind. l?1). The experiment was made in two tanks: one with an unaltered plankton assemblage and one with larger zooplankton removed. The scarce phytoplankton community was also simple, consisting mainly of one Cryptomonas and two Mallomonas species. The abundance and species composition of smaller plankton was heavily influenced by grazing of Daphnia. In particular, the biomass, of heterotrophic flagellates increased after the removal of Daphnia. The biomass and production of bacterioplankton were not affected, and remained several times higher than that of phytoplankton. Bacterial production and grazing on bacteria were balanced, and when Daphnia was removed its grazing activity was compensated by flagellates. The removal of Daphnia did not affect the respiration or community net production of plankton. Among organisms smaller than zooplankton, bacteria seemed to be responsible for most of the respiration. The community net production was consistently negative even at the water surface, indicating an allochthonous carbon source. The results suggest that phytoplankton primary production was insufficient for the secondary production in the epilimnetic water of the study lake. The food requirements of bacteria and zooplankton, as well as of flagellates, each exceeded that supplied by phytoplankton primary production. The simple food chains in this experiment made it possible to reveal the functioning of the community so completely that dissolved organic matter is certainly comparable to or exceeds the importance of phytoplankton primary production as an energy and carbon source for food webs in this humic lake.  相似文献

Previous studies of Pyramid Lake, Nevada, led to the hypothesis that detritus could be an important food source for zooplankton because abundance of palatable algal species did not seem to be enough to support the zooplankton community throughout the year. Furthermore, a large portion of the annual primary productivity was attributed to a nonpalatable blue-green alga, Nodularia spumigena. We felt this alga became important to the Pyramid Lake aquatic community upon death, as edible detritus and a source of new nitrogen. Changes in pelagic detritus concentrations and microbial standing crops were monitored to determine the availability of these potential foods. Epilimnetic particulate organic carbon (POC) was primarily living phytoplankton. During holomixis and following spring primary production, hypolimnetic POC was 60–97% detrital, but these profundal POC concentrations were low (ca 650 µg l-1). Detritus-bacteria aggregates were observed only following the September cyanophyte bloom. Although pelagic detritus availability for zooplankton was low, bacterial populations were sufficient to be at least a supplemental food source. Bacteria numbers ranged from 0.50 106 to 24.7 106 ml-1 and increased in response to photosynthetic peaks. Microbial diversity, contribution to POC, and particle association were notable after July. The percentage of living carbon (assessed with ATP measurements) attributable to bacteria was highest in late summer and fall hypolimnetic samples. Patterns of change in organic phosphorus and nitrogen, the presence of a nitrogen-fixing cyanophyte, the N:P ratio, and results of other research demonstrated that non-nitrogen-fixing algae of Pyramid Lake are limited by inorganic nitrogen. The importance of N. spumigena to the aquatic community appeared to be as a source of new nitrogen, rather than as a forage; its mineralization is critical for the growth of palatable diatoms and green algae following winter mixing.  相似文献

Microscopic crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) and rotifers are the principal zooplankton components of the pelagic food webs in lakes. They play important ecological roles, functioning as essential links between primary producers and planktivorous fish. Individuals zooplankton are important nodes of matter flow in pelagic ecosystems. The zooplankton community structure can provide useful indicators of top–down processes, such as the magnitude or strength of planktivorous predators and the extent of zooplankton grazing. Here we report the abundance of zooplankton taxa (crustaceans and rotifers) that were recorded monthly, from January 1980 to September 2015, at two stations on Lake Kasumigaura, a shallow eutrophic lake that is the second largest lake in Japan. The data include information on 12 copepod species (taxa), 20 cladoceran species (taxa), 40 rotifer species (taxa), and the opossum shrimp (Neomysis intermedia). In the 1980s, the plankton of the lake were characterized by cyanobacterial blooms and the co-dominance of Bosmina and Diaphanosoma in the summer. In addition, the two cladoceran genera, Daphnia galeata and Chydorus sphaericus were often prominent. The plankton profile changed dramatically in the middle (1997–2004) of the present long-term monitoring period, when cyanobacteria disappeared and diatoms became dominant even in the summer; concurrently, only the Diaphanosoma cladocerans were evident. However, in the past 10 years, cyanobacterial blooms, the co-dominance of Bosmina and Diaphanosoma, and D. galeata have re-emerged. Zooplankton monitoring forms part of the Lake Kasumigaura Long-Term Environmental Monitoring Program, which has been conducted by the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) since 1977. Data on other planktonic components (phytoplankton and the elements of microbial food webs) noted during monitoring and on primary production were published in Takamura and Nakagawa (Ecol Res 27:839 2012a, Ecol Res 27:837 2012b, Ecol Res 31:287 2016). Lake Kasumigaura is a core site of the Japan Long-term Ecological Research Network, a member of the International Long-term Ecological Research Network. Our quantitative dataset spanning several decades is unique in terms of the work on lakes and the plankton therein, and is freely available. The dataset has been used in ecological and environmental programs, as well as in studies on lake management.  相似文献

Plankton dynamics at a station in lower Narragansett Bay, RIare compared for six summer and fall seasons, 1972–1977.In four of these years, initiation of the summer pulse of thectenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi was accompanied by a rapid declinein zooplankton abundance and a summer phytoplankton bloom. Terminationof the phytoplankton bloom coincided with depleted ctenophoreabundance and increased zooplankton biomass in two of the years.Yearly variations in the summer abundance of the diatom Skeletonemacostatum were positively related to the magnitude of the ctenophorepulse. The magnitude of ctenophore population was related tothe zooplankton biomass present at the start of the pulse. Theserelationships, the timing and magnitude of the plankton eventssuggest that M. leidyi regulated summer zooplankton and phytoplanktondynamics. Ctenophores may control phytoplankton blooms indirectlythrough their predation on herbivorous zooplankton and directlyby the nutrient excretion accompanying such grazing. This evidencethat a planktonic carnivore two trophic steps removed from thephytoplankton regulates the latter's dynamics in NarragansettBay is analogous to reported regulation of benthic algal (kelp)dynamics by the sea otter, lobster and various crabs throughtheir predation on herbivorous sea urchins. The factors responsiblefor the seasonal decrease in ctenophores remain unresolved;ctenophore predators on Mnemiopsis are absent in NarragansettBay. Infection by the vermiform larval anemone, Edwardsia lineata, grazing by the butterfish, Peprilus triacanthus, and changesin food availability, temperature and salinity likewise do notexplain this disappearance.  相似文献

The role of highly unsaturated fatty acids in aquatic foodweb processes   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
1. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are almost exclusively synthesized by plants. Animals can convert from one form of PUFA to another through elongation and desaturation, but very few can synthesize PUFA de novo. PUFA play an important role in regulating cell membrane properties, serve as precursors for important animal hormones and are essential for animals. 2. In aquaculture studies, highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), a subset of PUFA, have been found to be critical for maintaining high growth, survival and reproductive rates and high food conversion efficiencies for a wide variety of marine and freshwater organisms. 3. The plankton literature suggests high food-quality algae species are rich in HUFA and low food-quality algae are poor in HUFA. Adding semi-pure emulsions of HUFA to algae monocultures can markedly increase the growth rates of zooplankton feeding on these mixtures. 4. A study measuring zooplankton biomass accrual when feeding on natural phytoplankton found a strong correlation between phytoplankton HUFA (specifically eicosapentaenoic acid) content and herbivorous zooplankton production. 5. The aquatic ecology literature suggests that planktonic foodwebs with high HUFA content phytoplankton have high zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratios, while systems with low HUFA phytoplankton have low zooplankton biomass. Also, the seasonal succession of plankton in many temperate lakes follows patterns tied to phytoplankton HUFA content, with intense zooplankton grazing and ‘clear-water-phases’ characteristic of periods when the phytoplankton is dominated by HUFA-rich species. 6. Herbivorous zooplankton production is constrained by the zooplankton’s ability to ingest and digest phytoplankton. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that much of the phytoplankton which is assimilated may be nutritionally inadequate. HUFA may be key nutritional constituents of zooplankton diets, and may determine energetic efficiency across the plant–animal interface, secondary production and the strength of trophic coupling in aquatic pelagic foodwebs.  相似文献

Changes in the complexity of planktonic food webs may be expected in future aquatic systems due to increases in sea surface temperature and an enhanced stratification of the water column. Under these conditions, the growth of unpalatable, filamentous, N2‐fixing cyanobacterial blooms, and their effect on planktonic food webs will become increasingly important. The planktonic food web structure in aquatic ecosystems at times of filamentous cyanobacterial blooms is currently unresolved, with discordant lines of evidence suggesting that herbivores dominate the mesozooplankton or that mesozooplankton organisms are mainly carnivorous. Here, we use a set of proxies derived from amino acid nitrogen stable isotopes from two mesozooplankton size fractions to identify changes in the nitrogen source and the planktonic food web structure across different microplankton communities. A transition from herbivory to carnivory in mesozooplankton between more eutrophic, near‐coastal sites and more oligotrophic, offshore sites was accompanied by an increasing diversity of microplankton communities with aging filamentous cyanobacterial blooms. Our analyses of 124 biotic and abiotic variables using multivariate statistics confirmed salinity as a major driver for the biomass distribution of non‐N2‐fixing microplankton species such as dinoflagellates. However, we provide strong evidence that stratification, N2 fixation, and the stage of the cyanobacterial blooms regulated much of the microplankton diversity and the mean trophic position and size of the metabolic nitrogen pool in mesozooplankton. Our empirical, macroscale data set consistently unifies contrasting results of the dominant feeding mode in mesozooplankton during blooms of unpalatable, filamentous, N2‐fixing cyanobacteria by identifying the at times important role of heterotrophic microbial food webs. Thus, carnivory, rather than herbivory, dominates in mesozooplankton during aging and decaying cyanobacterial blooms with hitherto uncharacterized consequences for the biogeochemical functions of mesozooplankton.  相似文献

Interactions of detrital particulates and plankton   总被引:4,自引:3,他引:1
John M. Melack 《Hydrobiologia》1985,125(1):209-220
Detrital particulates, i.e. inorganic and non-living organic material of colloidal size and larger, span ten orders of magnitude in size and are ubiquitous in inland waters. Interactions between plankton and detrital particulates are reciprocal. Release of dissolved organics by living organisms enter the particulate size fraction by flocculation on bubbles or adsorption to inorganic particles. Bacteria benefit from attachment to particles and are agents in the aggregation of particulates. Nutrients released by decaying plankton can support phytoplankton growth. Potentially toxic compounds adsorb to particulates and then can enter pelagic food webs or sediment. Material egested by zooplankton contributes to the detrital pool which in turn is a food source for zooplankton.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial blooms induce significant costs that are expected to increase in the near future. Cyanobacterial resistance to zooplankton grazing is one factor thought to promote bloom events. Yet, numerous studies on zooplankton ability to graze upon cyanobacteria have been producing contradictory results and such a puzzle might arise from the lack of direct observations in situ. Our objective was to track, using fatty acid (FA) and fatty acid stable isotope analyses (FA-SIA), the fate of cyanobacterial organic matter in the food web of a lake subjected to summer blooms of Planktothrix rubescens. A metalimnetic bloom of P. rubescens occurred in Lake Bourget (France) during the study period (May–November 2009). The bloom was especially rich in α-linolenic acid, 18:3(n-3), but none of the considered zooplankton taxa exhibited spiking content in this particular FA. FA-SIA revealed, however, that over a quarter of 18:3(n-3) in small zooplankton (<500 μm) was provided by P. rubescens while large cladocerans (>500 μm) did not benefit from it. P. rubescens 18:3(n-3) could be tracked up to perch (Perca fluviatilis) young of the year (YOY) to which it contributed to ~15 % of total 18:3(n-3). Although transferred with a much lower efficiency than micro-algal organic matter, the P. rubescens bloom supported a significant share of the pelagic secondary production and did not constitute, sensu stricto, a ‘trophic dead end’. The cyanobacterial bloom also provided perch YOY with components of high nutritional values at a season when these are critical for their recruitment. This cyanobacterial bloom might thus be regarded as a significant dietary bonus for juvenile fish.  相似文献

The fate of small-sized phytoplankton (<5 µm) and pathwaysof carbon cycling in surface waters, i.e. recycling within orexport out of the mixed layer, were investigated in the NortheastWater (NEW) Polynya (77–81°N) from 23 May to 22 July1993. The sampling covered a wide range of ice, hydrographicand nutrient conditions. Chlorophyll a concentrations, phytoplanktonproduction rates and zooplankton abundances were determinedin the field, and potential rates of grazing by protozoa, copepodsand appendicularians were calculated from abundances, usingassumptions from the literature. To our knowledge, this is thefirst published attempt to assess concurrently the grazing ofthese three plankton groups in the Arctic. The production rateof small-sized phytoplankton was significantly higher in ice-freecompared with ice-covered areas, but the biomasses of small-sizedphytoplankton and zooplankton were not. Potential recycling, downward export and horizontal advection of phytoplankton werecalculated by resolving carbon budgets for the mixed layer.A large fraction of the small-sized phytoplankton produced insidethe polynya was advected horizontally to the ice-covered partof the NEW, where these algae were necessary to sustain theheterotrophic community. We conclude that the fate of small-sizedphytoplankton production was mostly recycling (>70%). Downwardexport would have occurred infrequently, as a result of intensegrazing by appendicularians. Size-differential pathways of carboncycling in planktonic food webs are discussed.  相似文献

1. Shallow lakes and ponds are a major component of the northern landscape and often contain a high zooplankton biomass despite clear waters that are poor in phytoplankton. 2. In this study we quantified zooplankton food sources and feeding rates in the shallow waters of two contrasting high‐latitude biomes: subarctic forest tundra (Kuujjuarapik, Quebec) and high arctic polar desert (Resolute, Nunavut). Five substrate types were tested (beads, bacteria, picophytoplankton, filamentous plankton and microbial mats). Special attention was given to the role of benthos, a component that is usually poorly integrated into models of aquatic foodwebs. 3. Consistent with observations elsewhere in the circumpolar region, high concentrations of adult macrozooplankton occurred in all sites (up to 17 100 crustaceans m?3) while phytoplankton concentrations and primary productivity were low. The communities were composed of multiple species, including Daphnia middendorfiana, Hesperodiaptomus arcticus, Leptodiaptomus minutus, Artemiopsis stefanssoni and Branchinecta paludosa. 4. Detritus made 89–98% of the planktonic resource pool and bacteria contributed the highest biomass (up to 29 mg C m?3) of the planktonic food particles available to zooplankton. Benthic resources were dominated by microbial mats that grew in nutrient‐rich conditions at the base of the ponds and which dominated overall ecosystem biomass and productivity. 5. All species were flexible in their feeding but there were large, order of magnitude differences in clearance rates among taxa. These differences likely resulted from different grazing strategies among cladocerans, copepods and fairy shrimps, and possibly also from adaptation to specific food types and size ranges that occur locally in these waters. 6. The subarctic cladocerans Ceriodaphnia quadrangula and D. middendorfiana, and the arctic fairy shrimp B. paludosa were observed to graze directly on the microbial mats and the feeding experiments confirmed their assimilation of benthic substrates. The other zooplankton species showed a more pelagic feeding mode but were capable of using microbial mat filaments, thus may be indirectly linked to benthic processes via resuspension. 7. Our study indicates that the classical aquatic food web in which phytoplankton provide the sole production base for grazers does not apply to northern shallow lakes and ponds. Instead, microbial mats increase the physical complexity of these high latitude ecosystems and likely play a role in sustaining their high zooplankton biomass.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. In a comparative study, we examined the potential for fish to structure planktonic food webs in shallow mesotrophic to hypereutrophic Northeast Brazilian reservoirs. The food webs were dominated by three guilds of fish (facultative piscivores, generalist planktivores and omnivores), small herbivorous zooplankton and bloom‐forming cyanobacteria, with few littoral macrophytes. 2. A principal component's analysis on data from 13 reservoirs (27 sampling dates in 1995–99) revealed that euphotic depth, the relative density of phytoplankton (i.e. the percentage of overall phytoplankton density) represented by cyanobacteria, and the relative biomass of fish (i.e. percentage of overall biomass) represented by omnivores and facultative piscivores, explained most of the variance in the data. Physico‐chemical conditions, lake morphometry and rainfall were secondary factors. 3. Phytoplankton was related to fish guild structure. Chlorophyll concentration increased with total phosphorus and the relative biomass of omnivorous fish, decreased with the relative biomass of facultative piscivores, but was unrelated to the biomass and mean body size of herbivorous zooplankton. Chlorophyll concentration and the densities of filamentous and colonial cyanobacteria decreased with the ratio of the biomass of facultative piscivores to that of omnivores (FP : OM). 4. We propose two complementary mechanisms for the observed relationships between fish and phytoplankton. At a low biomass of facultative piscivores, juvenile zooplanktivorous fishes may induce a trophic cascade on zooplankton in the littoral zone. Regardless of piscivore biomass, piscivores and omnivores may regulate phytoplankton via multichannel omnivory because of the predominance of omnivorous or detritivorous foraging behaviour. 5. Manipulative experiments are needed to explore further whether, depending on priorities in the use of the reservoir, fisheries management could alter the FP : OM ratio either to enhance fish yields or to reduce phytoplankton densities and cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

Infochemicals released by marine phytoplankton play important roles in food web interactions by influencing the feeding behavior and selectivity of zooplanktonic predators. Recent modeling efforts have focused on the role of such chemicals as toxic grazing deterrents in phytoplankton competition. However, infochemicals may also be utilized as grazing cues, leading predators to profitable foraging patches. Here we investigate the role of infochemical mediated zooplankton grazing in a standard 3-species phytoplankton competition model, with the aim of further elucidating the ecological role of phytoplankton derived infochemicals. We then extend this to consider a more realistic 4-species model. The models produce a range of solutions depending on the strength of competition and microzooplankton grazing selectivity. Our key result is that infochemical chemoattractants, which increase the susceptibility of the producer to grazing, can provide a refuge for both competing phytoplankton species by attracting carnivorous copepods to consume microzooplankton grazers in a multi-trophic interaction. Our results indicate that infochemicals potentially have important consequences for the dynamics of marine food webs.  相似文献

Shallow high-latitude lakes and ponds are usually characterized by an oligotrophic water column overlying a biomass-rich, highly productive benthos. Their pelagic food webs often contain abundant zooplankton but the importance of benthic organic carbon versus seston as their food sources has been little explored. Our objectives were to measure the δ13C and δ15N isotopic signatures of pelagic and benthic particulate organic matter (POM) in shallow water bodies in northern Canada and to determine the relative transfer of this material to zooplankton and other aquatic invertebrates. Fluorescence analysis of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) indicated a relatively strong terrestrial carbon influence in five subarctic waterbodies whereas the CDOM in five arctic water columns contained mostly organic carbon of autochthonous origin. The isotopic signatures of planktonic POM and cohesive benthic microbial mats were distinctly different at all study sites, while non-cohesive microbial mats often overlapped in their δ13C signals with the planktonic POM. Zooplankton isotopic signatures indicated a potential trophic link with different fractions of planktonic POM and the non-cohesive mats whereas the cohesive mats did not appear to be used as a major carbon source. The zooplankton signals differed among species, indicating selective use of resources and niche partitioning. Most zooplankton had δ13C values that were intermediate between the values of putative food sources and that likely reflected selective feeding on components of the pelagic or benthic POM. The results emphasize the likely importance of benthic-pelagic coupling in tundra ecosystems, including for species that are traditionally considered pelagic and previously thought to be dependent only on phytoplankton as their food source.  相似文献

Several predictions of the theory developed for pelagic food webs of the Northern Hemisphere were tested on water bodies of Eastern Australia. Eleven reservoirs, representing trophic and latitudinal gradients were sampled for nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton and pelagic fish. Two models of regression analysis, which analysed possible interactions between trophic levels were based on different sets of data. In one, each reservoir was represented by only one pair of observations – annual mean or single observation (“regional model”). In the other, seasonal means of four frequently sampled reservoirs similar in productivity were used (“temporal model”). Significant variation in total phytoplankton biovolume (TPB) was predicted by total phosphorus concentration (TP), total nitrogen concentration (TN), mean crustacean length and acoustic biomass of planktivorous fish in both models. This suggested that nutrient limitation, zooplankton grazing and positive effects of fish were probably important in controlling the biomass of primary producers at both regional and temporal scales. In the regional model, the biomass of fish was also negatively correlated with Daphnia biomass and mean crustacean length, suggesting that the trophic cascade hypothesis may be applicable to Eastern Australia for the considered range of reservoir productivities. The biovolume of cyanobacteria was not correlated to any variables tested in the regional model. In contrast, nutrient and food web variables had significant effects on cyanobacterial biovolume in the temporal model. This suggested that factors governing seasonal succession were probably more important for cyanobacteria than variation in reservoir productivity or location. Contrary to previous views, no negative relationship between total biomass of zooplankton and TPB was found in both models, suggesting that the community structure of zooplankton rather than its total biomass mediates top‐down effects. Many predictions of the food web theory remained robust in spite of substantial differences in animal taxonomy and physical environment of Australian ecosystems.  相似文献

We performed a meta‐analysis of 31 lake mesocosm experiments to investigate differences in the responses of pelagic food chains and food webs to nutrient enrichment and fish presence. Trophic levels were divided into size‐based functional groups (phytoplankton into highly edible and poorly edible algae, and zooplankton into small herbivores, large herbivores and omnivorous zooplankton) in the food webs. Our meta‐analysis shows that 1) nutrient enrichment has a positive effect on phytoplankton and zooplankton, while fish presence has a positive effect on phytoplankton and a negative effect on zooplankton in the food chains; 2) nutrient enrichment has a positive effect on highly edible algae and small herbivores, but no effect on poorly edible algae, large herbivores and omnivorous zooplankton in the food webs. Planktivorous fish have a positive effect on highly edible algae and small herbivores, a negative effect on large herbivores and omnivorous zooplankton, and no effect on poorly edible algae. Our meta‐analysis confirms that nutrient enrichment and planktivorous fish affect functional groups differentially within trophic levels, revealing important changes in the functioning of food webs. The analysis of fish effects shows the well‐described trophic cascade in the food chain and reveals two trophic cascades in the food web: one transmitted by large herbivores that benefit highly edible phytoplankton, and one transmitted by omnivorous zooplankton that benefit small herbivores. Comparison between the responses of food webs and simple food chains also shows consistent biomass compensation between functional groups within trophic levels.  相似文献

1. As grazers on picoplankton and nanoplankton, planktonic ciliates form an important link in pelagic food webs. Ciliate communities may be controlled by predation by metazooplankton. In eutrophic systems, however, where the number of large crustaceans is often low, the mechanisms that regulate ciliate dynamics have rarely been described. 2. We conducted an enclosure experiment with natural and screened (145 μm) summer plankton communities to investigate the effect of the small‐sized crustacean zooplankton on ciliate community structure and the microbial loop in a shallow eutrophic lake. 3. The removal of the larger fraction of crustaceans initiated a decrease in total ciliate abundance. At the community level, we observed a substantial increase in large‐sized predacious ciliates (>100 μm) and a simultaneous decrease in the abundance of smaller ciliates (<20–40 μm) that were mostly bacterivores and bacterio‐herbivores. The compositional shift in the ciliate community, however, did not cascade down to the level of bacteria and edible phytoplankton.  相似文献

Lake Erie is the most socioeconomically important and productive of the Laurentian (North American) Great Lakes. Since the mid-1990s cyanobacterial blooms dominated primarily by Microcystis have emerged to become annual, late summer events in the western basin of Lake Erie yet the effects of these blooms on food web dynamics and zooplankton grazing are unclear. From 2005 to 2007, grazing rates of cultured (Daphnia pulex) and natural assemblages of mesozooplankton and microzooplankton on five autotrophic populations were quantified during cyanobacterial blooms in western Lake Erie. While all groups of zooplankton grazed on all prey groups investigated, the grazing rates of natural and cultured mesozooplankton were inversely correlated with abundances of potentially toxic cyanobacteria (Microcystis, Anabaena, and Cylindrospermopsis; p < 0.05) while those of the in situ microzooplankton community were not. Microzooplankton grazed more rapidly and consistently on all groups of phytoplankton, including cyanobacteria, compared to both groups of mesozooplankton. Cyanobacteria displayed more rapid intrinsic cellular growth rates than other phytoplankton groups under enhanced nutrient concentrations suggesting that future nutrient loading to Lake Erie could exacerbate cyanobacterial blooms. In sum, while grazing rates of mesozooplankton are slowed by cyanobacterial blooms in the western basin of Lake Erie, microzooplankton are likely to play an important role in the top-down control of these blooms; this control could be weakened by any future increases in nutrient loads to Lake Erie.  相似文献
