Discussions about assisted suicide have hitherto been based on accounts of dignity conceived only as an inherent value or as a status; accounts of dignity in which it appears as a (contingent) attitude, by contrast, have been neglected. Yet there are two good reasons to consider dignity to be an attitude. First, this concept of dignity best allows us to grasp a crucial aspect of everyday language: people often express fears of losing their dignity—and it is not possible to explain this with an account in which dignity is inherent. Second, such a concept allows us to adduce new argumentation where the argument based on status ends. Dignity considered as a status provides grounds to argue for the moral permissibility of assisted suicide, in the sense that in such an account individuals possess the normative power to waive their right to life. But the question then remains of how to decide what counts as a good reason for assisted suicide—and this is where an argument based on dignity as an attitude can provide illumination.  相似文献

The extent to which an organism is locally adapted in an environmental pocket depends on the selection intensities inside and outside the pocket, on migration, and on the size of the pocket. When two or more loci are involved in this local adaptation, measuring their frequency gradients and their linkage disequilbria allows one to disentangle the forces-migration and selection-acting on the system. We apply this method to the case of a local adaptation to organophosphate insecticides in the mosquito Culex pipiens pipiens in southern France. The study of two different resistance loci allowed us to estimate with support limits gene flow as well as selection pressure on insecticide resistance and the fitness costs associated with each locus. These estimates permit us to pinpoint the conditions for the maintenance of this pocket of adaptation as well as the effect of the interaction between the two resistance loci.  相似文献

Since its discovery more than 85 years ago, ferritin has principally been known as an iron storage protein. However, new roles, beyond iron storage, are being uncovered. Novel processes involving ferritin such as ferritinophagy and ferroptosis and as a cellular iron delivery protein not only expand our thinking on the range of contributions of this protein but present an opportunity to target these pathways in cancers. The key question we focus on within this review is whether ferritin modulation represents a useful approach for treating cancers. We discussed novel functions and processes of this protein in cancers. We are not limiting this review to cell intrinsic modulation of ferritin in cancers, but also focus on its utility in the trojan horse approach in cancer therapeutics. The novel functions of ferritin as discussed herein realize the multiple roles of ferritin in cell biology that can be probed for therapeutic opportunities and further research.  相似文献

How well can institutional guidelines help ensure the dignity, rights, safety and well being of research participants in an underdeveloped country? In this paper I describe the limits of informed consent as an instrument for the protection of participants in the context of the Philippines. I bring to this paper my experiences as an advocate of rights, a member of an ethics review board, a researcher on the ethics of research and as an observer of the dynamics of clinical practice in an academic public teaching hospital of the University of the Philippines where I am professor.  相似文献

The reproductive justice movement started by black women’s rights activists made its way into the academic literature as an intersectional approach to women’s reproductive autonomy. While there are many scholars who now employ the term ‘reproductive justice’ in their research, few have taken up the task of explaining what ‘justice’ entails in reproductive justice. In this paper I take up part of this work and attempt to clarify the relevant kind of freedom an adequate theory of reproductive justice would postulate. To do so, I compare two approaches to reproductive freedom: an approach based on freedom as non-interference and an approach based on freedom as non-domination. I then argue that the non-domination approach better fits the ideals of the reproductive justice movement as set forth by its founders and should be treated as one of the necessary conditions in any non-ideal account of reproductive justice. Towards the end, I single out epistemic non-domination as crucial in shaping the narrative around reproductive justice.  相似文献

Many published studies in ecological science are viewed as stand‐alone investigations that purport to provide new insights into how ecological systems behave based on single analyses. But it is rare for results of single studies to provide definitive results, as evidenced in current discussions of the “reproducibility crisis” in science. The key step in science is the comparison of hypothesis‐based predictions with observations, where the predictions are typically generated by hypothesis‐specific models. Repeating this step allows us to gain confidence in the predictive ability of a model, and its corresponding hypothesis, and thus to accumulate evidence and eventually knowledge. This accumulation may occur via an ad hoc approach, via meta‐analyses, or via a more systematic approach based on the anticipated evolution of an information state. We argue the merits of this latter approach, provide an example, and discuss implications for designing sequences of studies focused on a particular question. We conclude by discussing current data collection programs that are preadapted to use this approach and argue that expanded use would increase the rate of learning in ecology, as well as our confidence in what is learned.  相似文献

The work and inspiration of Robert Rosen is stated and expressed in personal tones. The concept of passages through water (H2O) near protein surfaces is reviewed in terms of its influence on ligand diffusion to an effector. This is offered as a target for interference by a non-specific general anesthetic agent. In view of the similarities between this anesthetic state and sleep, this mechanism is proposed to be operative for the sleep/wake states. Based on this mechanism and other factors, nitrogen (N2) is proposed as an exogenous sleep factor.  相似文献

In principle, the ektacytometer consists of a combination of a Laser-illuminated diffractometer with a circular viscometric fluid flow, analogous to that of a rotation viscometer. In this device erythrocytes are deformed to ellipsoid-like shapes and produce a diffraction pattern which, depending on the flow conditions, is to some degree elliptically distorted. From the shape of this pattern the extent of cell deformation can be deduced. In this survey an introduction into the mode of operation of the ektacytometer as well as an overview on methodical variants are given on the basis of literature. Since its publication in 1974 ektacytometry has found many applications, mainly in basic research. Presumably, it will receive still broader interest also as a routine method in haematological or pharmaceutical laboratories.  相似文献

Industrial hazardous waste is a special kind of toxic substance, which poses risks to the environment as well as human health. With the speeding up of industrialization in China, the collecting, recycling, treatment and disposal of industrial hazardous waste gradually become a severe problem to both the environmental protection and the resource management. In this paper, we laid an emphasis on prospective optimization, used integer program method, and selected the optimal locating approach to the collecting and handling of industrial hazardous waste on the basis of covering location model. We also selected an industrial intensive district in Hebei Province in China as an empirical object and examined our model result. Compared to previous results, this one bears the characteristics of immediacy, dynamism and predictability.  相似文献

In the experiments carried out on 94 rats the role of the function of gastric mechanoreceptors in the regulation of food and water intake was studied. We tried to assess whether this mechanoreception could serve as reinforcement in the induction of an instrumental feeding reflex. Distension of the stomach with a balloon inhibited significantly food intake in free consumption as well as in the instrumental reflex. On the other hand, no such effect was observed on water intake. The trial of development of an instrumental food reflex reinforced with stomach distension gave a negative result. The obtained results are explained as due to an ontogenetically fixed specific mode of food and water intake, and a modified concept of reduction-drive of reinforcement as proposed by Konorski is tentatively suggested for this explanation.  相似文献

We analyze the spending of individuals in the United States on lottery tickets in an average month, as reported in surveys. We view these surveys as sampling from an unknown distribution, and we use non-parametric methods to compare properties of this distribution for various demographic groups, as well as claims that some properties of this distribution are constant across surveys. We find that the observed higher spending by Hispanic lottery players can be attributed to differences in education levels, and we dispute previous claims that the top 10% of lottery players consistently account for 50% of lottery sales.  相似文献

Cannabis extracts like marijuana have the highest consumption rate worldwide. Yet, their societal acceptance as recreational and therapeutic drugs could represent a serious hazard to female human reproduction, because cannabis ingredients [termed (phyto)cannabinoids] can perturb an endogenous system of lipid signals known as endocannabinoids. Accumulated evidence on animal models and humans has demonstrated a crucial role of these endogenous signals on different aspects of female reproduction, where they act through an ensamble of proteins that synthesize, transport, degrade and traffic them. Several reports have recently evidenced the potential role of endocannabinoids as biomarkers of female infertility for disease treatment and prevention, as well as their possible epigenetic effects on pregnancy. The purpose of this review is to provide an update of data collected in the last decade on the effects of cannabinoids and endocannabinoids on female reproductive events, from development and maturation of follicles and oocytes, to fertilization, oviductal transport, implantation and labor. In this context, a particular attention has been devoted to the ovary and the production of fertilizable oocytes, because recent studies have addressed this hot topic with conflicting results among species.  相似文献

Pollinators are expected to respond to low reward availability in an inflorescence by visiting fewer flowers before departure, thus potentially causing reduced visitation, but also reduced geitonogamous selfing. I tested this hypothesis using Anacamptis morio, an orchid that does not reward its pollinators. Supplementation of inflorescences with artificial nectar did not result in an increase in fruit set on supplemented inflorescences compared to control inflorescences and tended to reduce pollinia removal. Supplementation resulted in reduced fruit quality, but there was no evidence that this was as a result of inbreeding depression. Behavioral experiments showed that pollinating bumble bees, as predicted, visited more flowers on supplemented inflorescences. Bumble bees also deposited more self-pollen on supplemented inflorescences, but this was marginally significant. Bumble bee queens removed significantly more pollinia from control inflorescences, while Bombus terrestris and B. lucorum workers did not. I conclude that while pollinators behaved as predicted, there was weak evidence that pollinia removal, pollen deposition, and fruit set followed the predictions of the hypothesis. I argue that this was probably because some pollinators were more efficient at removing and depositing pollen on control inflorescences, while others were not.  相似文献

Modifications in the amide portion led to an improvement in aqueous solubility, an important characteristic for an oral drug. Aims European frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae L.) is an aquatic plant originating from Europe that has emerged as an invasive species, spreading in the USA and Canada since it was first brought to North America in 1932. It can now be found in many water bodies, from small ponds and long rivers to large lakes such as Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The continuous spread of this species indicates its success as an invasive species despite legislative attempts to limit its distribution. Catling et al. (Catling PM, Miltrow G, Haber E, et al. (2003) The biology of Canadian weeds. 124. Hydrocharis morsus-ranae L. Can J Plant Sci 83:1001–16) wrote a thorough review about this invasive species in North America. Our review aims for a compilation of the most recent available data and recent studies on H. morsus-ranae L. and focuses primarily on its environmental uses, ecological impacts and management. The purpose of this review is to offer an organized and updated report on European frogbit that can be used towards future studies with the goal of eradicating this invasive species and providing insights on management of other invasive plants.Important findings Our findings reveal that European forgbit's ecological effects on other species and the invaded environment were shown to be less harmful than previously feared. European frogbit had negative impacts on native plants and reduced dissolved oxygen concentration. However, water chemistry, phytoplankton and zooplankton communities were actually not affected by European frogbit. For fungi, bacteria and macroinvertebrates, studies have showed complex and sometimes conflicting results. We also specifically discussed the new method to control this species using shading and the more recent studies on biological control. Shading with a shade cloth has been shown to effectively remove European frogbit and had minor environmental effects. However, using biological control to combat the spread of the invasive frogbit seems not as successful as we wished.  相似文献

Liposomes are an important tool and have gained much attention for their promise as an effective means of delivering small therapeutic compounds to targeted sites. In an effort to establish an effective method to produce liposomes from the lipid, dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine or DPPC, we have found important aspects that must be taken into consideration. Here, we used probe-tip sonication to prepare liposomes on a batch scale. During this process we uncovered interesting steps in their preparation that altered the thermodynamic properties and phase transitions of the resulting liposome mixtures. Using differential scanning calorimetry to assess this we found that increasing the sonication time had the most dramatic effect on our sample, producing almost an entirely separate phase transition relative to the main phase transition. This result is consistent with reports from the current literature. We also highlight a smaller transition, which we attribute to traces of unincorporated lipid that seems to gradually disappear as the total lipid concentration decreases. Overall, sonication is an effective means of producing liposomes, but we cannot assert this method is optimal in producing them with precise physical properties. Here we highlight the physical effects at play during this process.  相似文献

The path that our hand takes when moving from one position to another is often slightly curved. Part of this curvature is caused by perceptual errors. We examine here whether this is so for the influence that a surface's orientation has on the approaching hand's path. When moving our hand towards a point on a surface we tend to follow a path that makes the final approach more orthogonal to the surface at that point. Doing so makes us less sensitive to imperfections in controlling our movements. Here we show that this tendency is also present when moving towards a point along an edge of a drawing of an oriented bar. The influence of the bar's orientation is no smaller when people are explicitly asked to move as straight as possible, than when they are instructed to move as fast as possible. The bar's orientation also influences perceptual judgements of a straight path, but this influence is only as large as it is on the curvature of the hand's path for judgements of the direction from the hand's initial position to the target. We conclude that the influence of the bar's orientation on the curvature of the hand's path is caused by a misperception of the initial direction in which the hand has to move to reach the target.  相似文献

Cancer represents one of the most challenging issues for the biomedical research, due its large impact on the public health state. For this reason, many mathematical methods have been proposed to forecast the time evolution of cancer size and invasion. In this paper, we study how to apply the Gompertz’s model to describe the growth of an avascular tumor in a realistic setting. To this aim, we introduce mathematical techniques to discretize the model, an important requirement when discrete-time measurements are available. Additionally, we describe observed-based techniques, borrowed from the field of automation theory, as a tool to estimate the model unknown parameters. This identification approach is a promising alternative to traditional statistical methods, and it can be easily extended to other models of cancer growth as well as to the evaluation of not measurable variables, on the basis of the available measurements. We show an application of this method to the analysis of solid tumor growth and parameters estimation in presence of a chemotherapy agent.  相似文献
