The anatomy and histology of the adult Argas (Persicargas) arboreus central nervous system are described and compared with these properties in other ticks. The single, integrated, central nerve mass (CNM) is formed by a fused supra-esophageal part (protocerebrum, cheliceral ganglia, palpal ganglia, and stomodeal pons) and a subesophageal part (4 pairs of pedal ganglia and the complex opisthosomatic ganglion). Single peripheral nerves (pharyngeal and recurrent) and paired peripheral nerves (compound protocerebral, cheliceral, palpal, pedal and opisthosomatic) extend from the CNM to body organs and appendages. Optic nerves, described in other Argas species, are not found in A. (P.) arboreus. Histologically, the CNM is enclosed by a thin-walled periganglionic blood sinus and invested by a collagenous neural lamella followed by a perineurial layer composed of glial cells and containing fine reticular spaces, a cortical layer of association, motor and neurosecretory cell bodies and glial cells, and inner neuropile regions of fiber tracts forming 5 horizontal levels of connectives and commissures.  相似文献

The juvenile hormone analog acetaldehyde, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy) ethyl p-(methylthio) phenyl acetal, topically applied in a concentration of 10 μg/5 μl acetone/female, terminated diapause and induced vitellogenesis and oviposition in fed female Argas (Persicargas) arboreus Kaiser, Hoogstraal, and Kohls (Argasidae). This is the first reported hormonal termination of diapause in argasid ticks. A full bloodmeal and mating were critical factors controlling oviposition in nondiapausing females, and may enhance juvenile hormone activity. Experiments suggest that tick bodies possess sites of hormonal activities similar to those in other arthropods.  相似文献

The effects of high (96%) and low (0%) relative humidities (RH) and starvation on the total body weight, water content, dry weight content, and humidity responses of unfed adult Argas (Persicargas) arboreus (Argasidae) were determined each 15 days for a period of 105 days. High RH caused an increase of 6.7% in females and 7.2% in males of total body weight after 15 days followed by very slow decrease reaching 4.5% in females and 5.4% in males of initial body weight after 105 days. Low RH caused continuous decrease to 46.2% in females and 53.7% in males of the initial body weight after 105 days. After 105-day starvation at 96% RH, the initial value of the water content increased by 3% in females and 5% in males; at 0% RH this value decreased by 52% in females and 59% in males. The initial value of the dry weight content decreased by 23% in females and 26% in males at 96% RH and by 33% in females and 43% in males at 0% RH. Newly molted adults were hygronegative and at 96% RH remained so. At 0% RH, the hygronegative reaction gradually decreased and changed to hygropositive after 60 days in females and 90 days in males. Survival of 80 control ticks after 105 days was 96% at 96% RH and 54% at 0% RH.  相似文献

Salivary glands of the unfed adult Argas (Persicargas) arboreus (family Argasidae) contain 2 types of alveoli, one nongranular and one granule-secreting. The fine structure of the nongranular alveolus is similar to that of the family Ixodidae. In the granule-secreting alveolus, the presence of 3 types of secretory cells, each with morphologically distinct granular inclusions, confirms histological and histochemical observations on argasid salivary glands. Epithelial cells with numerous membranous infoldings, mitochondria, microtubules, and a complex canalicular system probably concerned with fluid regulation and secretion are located between granule-secreting cells and form caps over their basal regions. The luminal border of both secretory and epithelial cells is microvillate. The alveolar lumen leads into the chitinous alveolar duct which lacks the complex valvular structure of ixodid alveoli. Axons containing neurosecretory material occur in both nongranular and granule-secreting alveoli and probably control salivary secretion.  相似文献

The process of oviposition in A. walkerae was observed and found to be a sequence of exactly coordinated, interlocking events independent of the age of ticks. Egg-laying always commenced with numerous dorso-ventral movements of the capitulum. The pedipalps were spread during the last dorso-ventral movement and lowered to the ventral body wall embracing the genital aperture on both sides. Simultaneously, the cuticular sac of Gene's organ emerged and immediately everted maximally. Immediately afterwards the vestibulum vaginae prolapsed from the genital aperture touching the cuticular sac. The vestibulum vaginae handed over an egg to the cuticular sac after a brief contact. Then the vestibulum vaginae invaginated, the pedipalps closed and the cuticular sac was retracted. Finally, the capitulum very frequently moved up and down and the free egg was pushed in front of the ticks. The total time of laying an egg averaged 27min in both 4-week-old and 12-month-old ticks. In 4-week and 12-month-old ticks, egg-laying was preceded by a mean preoviposition period of 6.1 days and 7.5 days, respectively, while the mean oviposition was completed in 14 and 10 days and the average egg totals were 119 and 103.  相似文献

Larvae of 19 of the 21 species of the Argas subgenus Argas are already described. One of the two exceptions is A. (A.) macrostigmatus; we describe the larva of this species from wet nests of the crested cormorant, Phalacrocorax aristotelis, from Corsica, France. As in the adult and nymphal stages, this larva has an uncovered Haller's organ, a character shared in Palearctic members of this large genus only with A. (A.) polonicus, a Central European parasite of rock pigeons. Available larval samples of both species are indistinguishable. However, adult and nymphal A. (A.) macrostigmatus are unique for their exceptionally large spiracular plates. These are the only Argas (Argas) species which differ distinctly as adults and nymphs but hardly or not at all as larvae. Argas (A.) macrostigmatus was previously known only from a nest of the crested cormorant in the Black Sea. Ukrainian SSR.  相似文献

Prefeeding exposure of female Argas (Persicargas) arboreus to short photoperiod (SP) induces diapause, expressed as oviposition delay for more than 40 days postfeeding. Diapause incidence increases as prefeeding SP exposure periods increase. Postfeeding SP exposure is not essential to maintain diapause. Postfeeding exposure to SP without prefeeding SP exposure does not induce diapause. A 2 week prefeeding exposure to long photoperiod (LP) terminates diapause in two-thirds of the females exposed to LP after feeding. The remaining one-third, which may differ genetically, require a 6 week LP prefeeding exposure to terminate diapause. An 8 week prefeeding exposure to LP is required to terminate diapause in females exposed to SP after feeding.  相似文献

Khalil G. M., Hoogstraal H. and Oliver J. H. Jr. 1980. Biological evaluation of the systematic validity of the African Argas (Persicargas) arboreus and the Asian-Australian A.(P.)robertsi (Ixodoidea: Argasidae). International journal for Parasitology10: 253–259. The closely related A. (P.)arboreus (Ethiopian Faunal Region) and A. (P.) robertsi (Oriental and Australian Faunal Regions) interbreed readily and produce partially fertile progeny. Intrahybrid crosses are much less productive than P1 homogamic crosses. Results of backcrosses indicate that the progeny of the robertsi ♂ × arboreus ♀ cross are less fertile than the progeny of the reciprocal cross. The fertility of F1 hybrid progeny is lower than that of the P1 pure species as expressed in lower female fecundity, egg hatch, and/or viability of immature stages. These 2 species probably originated from a common ancestor and geographic isolation caused genetic incompatibility.  相似文献

This scanning electron microscopy study revealed that the egg of Argas persicus was covered with chorion which appeared as a wrinkled layer containing regions of three textures. The first had elevated parts of slightly rough surface. The second had irregular smooth elevations; each carried numerous parallel horizontal foldings with vertical ridges. The last region had rough surface with irregularly shaped projections. Following the removal of the chorion, shell was observed to have one polar micropyle and numerous slit like openings. Length (L), width (W) and L/W ratio of the egg were measured. Investigation of larvae revealed extensively folded integument of idiosoma and spherical or elongated tubercles on dorsal plate. Mouth enclosed between ventral hypostome and two dorsal chelicerae. Hypostome carried four longitudinal rows of conical denticles. Each chelicera was made up of two segments; the basal one appeared as a pocket for the distal one. Haller’s organ consisted of an anterior pit containing seven sensilla and a posterior capsule with four apertures. Distribution of chemo- and mechano-sensilla on the body was examined. Measurements of whole body, idiosoma, dorsal plate, capitulum, hypostome, palp and different types of sensilla both on the body and Haller’s organ are also presented.  相似文献

Mated male Argas persicus were dissected 1 and 2 weeks after feeding on untreated and ivermectin (IVM)-treated pigeons. One week after feeding, testes of untreated ticks were filled with rounded spermatids with subplasmalemmal vesicles and cytoplasmic organelles, but lacking in treated ticks. Two weeks after feeding, testes were crowded with elongated spermatozoa supported by double-walled cisternal tubes. The tubes consisted of two opposite walls, each with outer-fringed processes and inner elongated cisternae. Both were supported with electron dense striated plates in the middle of the spermatozoon. Internally, the cisternal tubes contained mitochondria and vacuoles. The nuclei were elongated dense masses between the tubes and the cell membranes. Subcutaneous inoculation of IVM at the dose 400 μg/kg pigeon resulted in extensive alterations in the testis of A. persicus. IVM prevented the development of new spermatids. There was a break down of cell membranes and cytoplasmic organelles of spermatozoa. Multivesicular bodies and numerous vacuoles were noticed in their cytoplasm. Double membranes of elongated cisternae and striation of electron dense plates became indistinct. IVM caused granulation and vacuolization of the nucleus as well as injury of mitochondrial cristae. The results suggest that IVM may bind to the neurotransmitter or the hormone involved in the process of sperm development or may be toxic to the germinal cells of A. persicus testis.  相似文献

Summary The relationship between embryonic postdiapause development (PDD) and temperature in ten Acridid species was studied by culturing eggpods from diapause onwards at constant temperatures (ranging from 15.0° C to 37.5° C). In six species PDD was also studied at fluctuating temperatures (12 h at 27.5° C and 12 h at 13.0° C). The PDD duration was strongly temperature dependent in all species studied (Q10 values between 3.0 and 4.1) and differed greatly between species. To assess whether these differences affect habitat determination, PDD duration was related to habitat microclimate. We found that species with a relatively long PDD are restricted to relatively warm grasslands, while species with a short PDD are also found in colder grasslands. Two species have a more limited occurrence than predicted from PDD duration. It is argued that the length of PDD (and consequently hatching date) is crucial to the completion of the annual cycle. The results are applicable to conservation of grasshoppers in grasslands subject to eutrophication. Here increase of vegetation density and height will lead to lower maximum temperatures in the egg environment (i.e. near the soil surface) and consequently to a delay in hatching and loss of thermophilous species. Grassland management rules are proposed that should aid conservation of these species.  相似文献
