Scoleces of adult D. dendriticum, D. latum and D. ditremum were studied using scanning electron and light microscopy. In D. dendriticum and D. latum the transverse bar between the bothria at the scolex apex always possessed a frontal pit while in D. ditremum no such invagination was seen. The scoleces attach to the host intestine by taking a firm grip with each bothrium around one or two intestinal villi. In D. ditremum and D. latum a layer of secreted substance is present between the scolex apex and the host intestine and between the inner bothrium surface and the host intestinal villi. In D. dendriticum, however, such a secreted layer was only observed at the scolex apex. A general account of the musculature and nervous and excretory systems of a Diphyllobothrium scolex is given.  相似文献

This study focuses on plerocercoids of the cestode Diphyllobothrium ditremum in brown trout Salmo trutta from the subalpine lake Øvre Heimdalsvatn in south–central Norway. Salmo trutta was the only fish species in this lake until European minnow Phoxinus phoxinus was registered in 1969. The P. phoxinus population increased substantially in the following years. In contrast with the 1969–1972 period, when plerocercoids of D. ditremum were practically absent in S. trutta, there was a high prevalence and intensity of infection in the 2013 S. trutta samples. Because the life cycle of D. ditremum involves two larval stages, in copepods and salmonids and mature worms in piscivorous birds, such as mergansers and loons, a change in feeding ecology of S. trutta or changes in population densities of copepods, fish or birds might have influenced the infection pattern. No relationships between D. ditremum infection and muscle‐tissue δ15N signature or Hg concentration were found, indicating that infection is not a result of piscivory or cannibalism. Furthermore, consumption of copepods by S. trutta during summer and autumn was low. On the other hand, the number of piscivorous birds has increased, probably due to the presence of P. phoxinus as a new and numerous prey. An increased number of final D. ditremum hosts may have produced a higher output of cestode eggs, resulting in more infected copepods that in turn are consumed by S. trutta. Indirectly, P. phoxinus may therefore have caused the observed increased infection in S. trutta and thereby imposed further negative effects on S. trutta in high mountain areas.  相似文献

Human diphyllobothriosis is caused by at least 14 species of cestodes belonging to the genus Diphyllobothrium. Molecular analysis by sequencing of nuclear and mitochondrial targets identifies some species at inter- and intra-specific level, and helps to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationships. Nevertheless, the suitability of further molecular targets deserves to be widened, and the comparison of samples of different geographical origin could allow their intra-specific characterization, which could also be useful for epidemiological purposes. In this study, we investigated inter- and intra-specific variability among tapeworms of the genus Diphyllobothrium, with focus on Diphyllobothrium latum, originated from Switzerland. Samples were analyzed by comparing the sequences of two nuclear and two mitochondrial DNA targets. We analyzed 27 samples belonging to 4 species (D. latum, Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense, Diphyllobothrium dendriticum and Diphyllobothrium ditremum), 15 of which isolated from clinical cases (adults and eggs), 2 from wild canines, and 2 from fish of Swiss lakes (plerocercoid larvae); 8 samples of homologous species from other geographic origins were also sequenced and compared with the Swiss ones. Sequences of partial small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene and partial internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 (ITS1-2) were not useful even in inter-specific identification, whereas sequences of complete cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and cytochrome b (cob) genes allowed us to assess inter- and intra-specific variations among the samples. Cox1 and cob could differentiate 3 and 5 haplotypes within the species D. latum. The results are discussed in the light of the anamneses provided by part of the patients.  相似文献

Michel J. F., Lancaster M. B. and Hong C. 1978. The length of Ostertagia ostertagi in populations of uniform age. International Journal for Parasitology8: 437–441. The conclusion that, in calves exposed to daily infection with larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi, adult worms are constantly lost and replaced was based, in part, on the observation that the length of the worms present decreased with time. The underlying assumption that worms do not shrink was examined in an experiment in which groups of calves received 8300, 25,000 and 75,000 larvae respectively in a single occasion and were killed at various times between the 20th and 132nd day thereafter.The length of the worms was inversely related to the initial worm burden but as worm burdens declined the worms did not grow. Instead, in the groups that received 25,000 and 75,000 larvae, decreases in worm length of 7% and 8% respectively were seen when most of the worms had been lost. Although it appears very probable that this was due to the more rapid loss of large worms than of small, the point could not be conclusively demonstrated.  相似文献

Sullivan J. J. and Chernin E. 1976. Oral transmission of Brugia pahangi and Dipetalonema viteae to adult and neonatal jirds. International Journal for Parasitology6: 75–78. Confirming previous studies, anaesthetized adult jirds became infected after oral doses of 100 infective larvae of B. pahangi; 4 of 5 jirds became microfilaria-positive and all 5 harbored adult worms. Among 7 unanaesthetized adult jirds similarly exposed, none developed microfilaraemia although 5 each harbored a few adult worms. In these unanaesthetized jirds, presumably, rapid passage of the inoculum through the mouth permitted fewer larvae to penetrate the mucosa, and the rest were probably killed in the stomach. Unanaesthetized 4-day old jirds proved highly and equally susceptible to oral or subcutaneous infection with B. pahangi as indicated by microfilaraemias and large worm-burdens. Direct and indirect evidence suggest that the baby's stomach and small intestine are not inimical to swallowed larvae, thus accounting for the relatively numerous mature worms in the peritoneal cavity. Third-stage larvae of D. viteae, readily infective subcutaneously, succeeded relatively infrequently in maturing when given orally to anaesthetized adult or to unanaesthetized baby jirds. Consistent oral infectivity may thus be a feature of filariae more closely related to B. pahangi.  相似文献

Summary In the nervous system of the obligatory endoparasite Diphyllobothrium dendriticum immunoreactivity (IR) to growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF), peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI), bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP), gastrin, gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), oxytocin, FMRF-amide (FMRF) and serotonin (5HT) was demonstrated by immunocytochemical methods. A very strong GRF-IR was observed in the CNS and PNS of larvae and of the constantly growing adult worms. GRF-IR axon terminals occur beneath the basal lamina of the tegument along the inside of the bothridia, the holdfast organ of the worm. GRF-IR fibres surround the yolk producing vitelline glands and occur in the wall of the vagina. PHI-IR was observed in the CNS and PNS of larvae and adult worms. PHI-IR terminals occur beneath the basal lamina of the tegument along the strobila, the nutrient absorbing surface of the worm. PHI-IR fibres seem to innervate the testicular follicles. FMRF-IR fibres and perikarya occur close to the vitelline glands and the uterine pore and in the male copulatory organ. Numerous large 5HT-IR perikarya with long varicose fibres were observed in the nervous system of the worm. 5HT-IR perikarya occur close to the genital atrium. D. dendriticum is the phylogenetically lowest organism in which IR to PHI has been demonstrated.  相似文献

Thompson R. C. A., Houghton A. and Zaman V. 1982. A study of the microtriches of adult Echinococcus granulosus by scanning electron microscopy. International Journal for Parasitology12: 579–583. The microtriches in different regions of the scolex and strobila of sexually mature Echinococcus granulosus were examined using the scanning electron microscope. E. granulosus was found to possess two morphologically distinct types of microthrix. A cylindrical, slender filamentous type of microthrix which appeared to be flexible was restricted to the scolex. On the strobila, the only type of microthrix observed was a flattened blade-like form which appeared to be rigid for most of its length. The occurrence of two distinct types of microthrix in separate regions of the body of E. granulosus suggests that they may be involved in different functional activities.  相似文献

In vitro activity of levamisole on the infective larvae, microfilariae and adult worms of Breinlia sergenti. International Journal for Parasitology4: 207–210. Levamisole shows in vitro activity against the infective larvae, microfilariae and adult worms of Breinlia sergenti. The polygraph studies using the adult worms indicate that levamisole causes an increase in the muscle tone; this action being dose related. The adult worms are more sensitive to the drug than the infective larvae and microfilariae. In vitro, levamisole is more potent compared with diethylcarbamazine against all the three stages of B. sergenti.  相似文献

The kinetics of infection with S. ratti were quantitated in normal and previously exposed C57B1 /6 mice. In primary infections, larvae penetrated the skin rapidly and were seen in peak numbers 12 h after infection. By 24 h after infection, larval numbers had declined appreciably and there was a slow decrease in numbers thereafter. Larvae were first observed in the lungs at 24 h and maximal recovery occurred at 48 h. It is thought that larval migration through the lungs is rapid. Worms were first seen in the intestines two days after infection. Maximum numbers were seen on the fifth day and worm expulsion was complete by day 10. Two moults took place in the small intestine during days 3 and 4 after infection. Rhabditiform larvae were first noted on the fourth day after infection. Mice exposed to S. ratti four weeks previously had significantly less larvae in the skin 4 and 12 h after infection but by 24 h there was no difference when compared with mice with primary infections. Peak recovery of larvae from the lungs occurred 24 h after infection; significantly less larvae were recovered on days 2 and 3 when compared with normal mice. There was a marked reduction in the adult worm burden in the gut; the number of worms recovered was less than one fifth of that seen in primary infections. Those worms which did mature were less fecund and were expelled from the intestines within 7 days of infection. It is suggested that in previously exposed animals, the migration of larvae from the skin is hastened, many of these larvae are destroyed in the lungs and that expulsion of worms which do mature in the intestines is accelerated.  相似文献

The histological appearances of the skin, lungs and small intestines of mice with primary and secondary infections with S. ratti are described. When the skins of mice with a primary infection were examined, larvae were seen scattered throughout the dermis. An inflammatory reaction of neutrophils and eosinophils was first noted around larvae 12 h after infection. By 48 h, mononuclear cells were prominent. The intensity of the inflammatory reaction gradually increased to a maximum on the fifth day and the larvae were destroyed. Very few larvae were seen in the lungs; those observed were located in the alveolar spaces and were not surrounded by an inflammatory infiltrate. Worms in the small intestines were found mostly in the crypts of Leiberkuhn, and were probably located within the epithelial layer; there was no significant villous atrophy or cellular infiltration. Marked differences were found in the tissues of mice with secondary infections. In the skin, oedema and neutrophils and eosinophils were seen around worms as early as 2 h after infection. By 24 h after infection, there was a mixed inflammatory infiltrate and worms were undergoing disintegration. Larvae in the lungs were surrounded by polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cells 48 h and 72 h after infection and the engulfed larvae were undergoing lysis. Only a few worms were seen in the intestines of mice with a secondary infection; the histological appearances were similar to that found in animals with primary infections. It is suggested that the rapid development of an oedematous reaction in the skins of immune mice may facilitate the entry of larvae into the bloodstream and that inflammatory cells destroy many larvae in the lungs of immune mice.  相似文献

Mermithid nematodes cause morphological and sexual anomalies in the pupae and adults of Stictochironomus polystictus (Kieffer). The parasite-induced changes resulted in the development of three types of intersexes. Structural alterations of adult males were variation of antennal length, appearance of antenna and number of flagellomeres, VIIIth abdominal segment, genitalia and associated appendages while in pupae, the length of antennal sheath and genital sac. However, the midge larvae infected with nematodes did not show any abnormality in morphological features. These entomopathogenic worms infecting male chironomids can feminize them and induce them to adopt a female behavior and return to water. So the worms apparently benefit from behavioral changes of the infected host, thereby reaching their abode where new hosts for its juveniles may be encountered. Since parasitized insects are usually castrated by worms before the beginning of the morphological changes, the behavioral alterations do not make additional fitness to the host.  相似文献

Information on helminth parasites in Antarctic phocids is scarce and fragmented. Anisakidae nematodes and Diphyllobothriidae cestodes have been reported in Antarctic and subantarctic phocids, although the prevalence and health significance remain unclear. In the present study, the presence of helminth parasites in faeces of Leptonychotes weddellii, Hydrurga leptonyx and Mirounga leonina has been investigated. Faecal samples were collected from different locations of the Antarctic Peninsula. Macroscopical inspection and standard flotation and migration techniques were used for faecal examination. Eggs, larvae and adult parasites of nematodes and cestodes were found in 76.9 % of samples analysed. Positive samples were recorded from all locations surveyed and species investigated. The prevalence was 71.3 % for M. leonina, 95.4 % for L. weddellii and 100 % for H. leptonyx. Anisakidae (eggs and worms), Metastrongyloidea (larvae) and Diphyllobothriidae (eggs) were identified in M. leonina and L. weddellii. Metastrongyloidea (larvae) and Diphyllobothriidae (eggs) were found in H. leptonyx. Molecular characterisation of some of the adult parasites found was useful for the identification of Anisakis simplex and Pseudoterranova sp. in M. leonina, and Contracaecum sp., Contracaecum osculatum, and Pseudoterranova sp. in L. weddellii.  相似文献

Paragonimus bangkokensis and Paragonimus harinasutai, which are morphologically distinguishable species, often co-infect in the same crab intermediate hosts. Recent molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that these two species are genetically close to each other and are considered as the sister species. While we have been studying Paragonimus adult worms obtained from the lungs of a cat experimentally infected with Paragonimus metacercariae which were morphologically identified as P. harinasutai collected from central Viet Nam, one out of 6 adult worms has grouped cuticular spines, which is a feature of P. bangkokensis. By molecular analyses, the CO1 sequence of this specimen was identical with that of P. bangkokensis, but the ITS2 and the D2 region of 28S rDNA sequences showed a two peak pattern. Then, PCR products of the ITS2 and the D2 region of 28S rDNA sequences were ligated to TOPO vector and subcloned to determine the heterozygosity. Two types of sequences were obtained from each ITS2 and D2 region of 28S; one was identical with P. harinasutai and the other with P. bangkokensis. Taking all these morphological and molecular data together, we identified this adult worm as a hybrid specimen of P. bangkokensis and P. harinasutai.  相似文献

(Nematoda: Pharyngostrongylidae) from grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus and M. fuliginosus) with life cycle stages and associated pathology. International Journal for Parasitology8: 379–387. Rugopharynx rosemariae new species is described from the stomachs of grey kangaroos, Macropus giganteus Shaw, 1790 and Macropus fuliginosus (Desmarest, 1817) from south-eastern Australia. The new species differs from other species of the genus in spicule length and in the length and shape of the oesophagus. Parasitic life-cycle stages are described from natural infections; free-living life-cycle stages were obtained by culturing eggs from gravid females. Third stage larvae burrow into the gastric mucosa producing small elevated nodules resulting from a localized fibroplastic and inflammatory reaction in the lamina propria and submucosa. Fourth stage and adult worms occur in the stomach lumen. Rugopharynx brevis (Canavan, 1931) is made a synonym of Rugopharynx australis (Mönnig, 1926).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the presence and prevalence of larval stages of Dicrocoelium dendriticum and Brachylaima sp. in the first intermediate host, a species of land snail, Helix aspersa, in Turkey. A total of 211 snails were collected in April-May 2014 from pastures in Mersin District. Larval stages of D. dendriticum were identified under a light microscope. Hepatopancreas from naturally infected H. aspersa snails were examined histologically. The prevalence of larval stages of D. dendriticum and Brachylaima sp. in H. aspersa snails was found to be 2.4% and 1.9%, respectively, in Mersin, Turkey. Cercariae were not matured in sporocysts at the beginning of April; however, it was observed that cercariae matured and started to leave sporocysts by early-May. Thus, it was concluded that H. aspersa acts as an intermediate host to D. dendriticumin and Brachylaima sp. in Mersin, Turkey. A digenean trematode Brachylaima sp. was seen for the first time in Turkey.  相似文献

Members of the genus Trichinella are small nematodes that can infect a wide range of animal hosts. However, their infectivity varies depending on the parasite and host species combination. In this study, we examined the susceptibility of 4 species of laboratory rodents, i.e., mice, rats, hamsters, and gerbils to Trichinella papuae, an emerging non-encapsulated Trichinella species. Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella pseudospiralis were also included in this study for comparison. Fifteen animals of each rodent species were infected orally with 100 muscle larvae of each Trichinella species. Intestinal worm burden was determined at day 6 and 10 post-inoculation (PI). The numbers of muscle larvae were examined at day 45 PI. The reproductive capacity index (RCI) of the 3 Trichinella species in different rodent hosts was determined. By day 6 PI, 33.2-69.6% of the inoculated larvae of the 3 Trichinella species became adult worms in the small intestines of the host animals. However, in rats, more than 96% of adult worms of all 3 Trichinella species were expelled from the gut by day 10 PI. In gerbils, only 4.8-18.1% of adult worms were expelled by day 10 PI. In accordance with the intestinal worm burden and the persistence of adults, the RCI was the highest in gerbils with values of 241.5±41.0 for T. papuae, 432.6±48 for T. pseudospiralis, and 528.6±20.6 for T. spiralis. Hamsters ranked second and mice ranked third in susceptibility in terms of the RCI, Rats yielded the lowest parasite RCI for all 3 Trichinella species. Gerbils may be an alternative laboratory animal for isolation and maintenance of Trichinella spp.  相似文献

International Journal for Parasitology3: 363–370. The fate of five daily doses of 60,000 infective larvae of Nematodirus battus was studied in 8-month-old lambs. On 18, 26 and 34 days after the last larval dose 4.0, 3.3 and 1.0 per cent of the total infective dose was recovered. Approximately 50 per cent of the worms recovered on these days were fourth-stage larvae. It is suggested that L5 and adult stages were preferentially lost from the hosts and that male worms were developing at a faster rate than the females. The populations of N. battus were smaller, contained higher proportions of fourth-stage larvae and shorter L5 and adult worms than those developing from similar infective doses in 3-month-old lambs. A transient decrease in alkaline phosphatase and maltase levels was found in the mucosa of the small intestine and was compared with the marked and persistent changes in mucosal enzyme activities found with similar infective doses in 3-month-old hosts.  相似文献

We studied the activities both of digestive enzymes in the small intestine of the herring gull (Larus argentatus) and a tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) residing in the intestine. It was found that D. dendriticum infects the medial section of the small intestine of the herring gull. Such localization of D. dendriticum is caused by the maximal activity of proteases and glycosidases and by the high rate of membrane and cavitary digestion in this section. The activity of protease and glycosidase in gulls infected with D. dendriticum is decreased. The activity of proteases in the fractions desorbed from the tegument surface of D. dendriticum is significantly higher than that of glycosidases.  相似文献

The identity of Anisakis type II larvae with adult A. physeteris was confirmed by comparison of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of 25S ribosomal DNA (rDNA). Patterns of RFLPs in larvae were almost identical with those in adult worms. Directly labelled 25S rDNA might serve as an appropriate probe with highly specific activity for examining RFLPs of larvae and adult worms.  相似文献

Supercooling temperature distribution curves for three aphid species, Elatobium abietinum, Drepanosiphum platanoides and Eucallipterus tiliae, were compared. All showed a tendency towards bimodality, and changes in the form of the curves were interpreted in terms of changing nucleator concentration. In the cases of D. platanoides and E. tiliae the form of the distribution curves for adult samples differed from that for samples of larvae. This was attributed to differences exhibited by adults and larvae in their choice of feeding sites on the host leaf. The distribution curves for E. abietinum obtained from Sitka and Norway spruces differed according to host plant.Evidence is presented to suggest that ice nucleation in aphids normally occurs in the gut contents, and that the quality of ingested phloem sap influences the form of the supercooling temperature distributions.  相似文献
