Diapause in a predaceous mite, Metaseiulus occidentalis, from a Californian vineyard population is a photoperiodically induced, facultative, adult reproductive diapause in females. The laboratory-determined critical photophase at 19°C was estimated at 11·2 hr. At 16°C, the critical photophase under laboratory conditions was approximately 11·6 hr. Temperature influenced the photoresponse of M. occidentalis so that diapause was entirely averted at temperatures of 22, 25, and 30°C. Aestival diapause at higher temperatures and long photophases was lacking. Development was continuous under constant darkness at all the temperatures tested. Diapause termination in laboratory-reared mites occurred spontaneously under the inductive conditions. Under constant 19°C temperatures, females responded to photophases so that diapause was terminated most rapidly under a 16 hr photophase (in 18·6 days); the 12 and 8 hr photophases, at this temperature, were next in their effectiveness, with 27·9 and 73·0 days, respectively, required for termination.  相似文献

Culex pipiens pipiens is one member of the C. pipiens complex which diapauses as an adult. Experiments show that photoperiod and temperature both affect the development of the ovarian follicles. Females reared at a 15 hr photophase and 22°C show an increase in follicle size over the first 8 days after emergence. Females reared at 10 hr and 22°C do not show an increase in follicle size. Follicle size does not gradually increase as photophase is lengthened. Rather, at photophases between 9 and 12 hr the follicles remain small and at photophases of 13 hr or more, the increase is seen. An increase in temperature tends to increase follicle size regardless of the photophase. However, a strong interaction between photophase and temperature is evident.No evidence exists for a single ‘critical stage’. Instead, the final follicle size is dependent, in a complex manner, upon the photophase experienced by all the stages. The final size is not a result of a cumulative effect.Photoperiod, independent of temperature, shows a marked effect on blood feeding. Females reared at 15 hr feed much more readily than those reared at 10 hr. Those 10 hr females that feed show no signs of gonotrophic dissociation.  相似文献

Some diapause characteristics were studied in a strain of the spider mite. Tetranychus urticae. which had been reared on bean plants in the laboratory for over 15 yr. The diapause induction response curve was of the long-day type, showing a sharply defined critical daylength of 13 hr 50 min. In constant darkness no diapause induction occurred, but with a photoperiod of 1L:23D diapause incidence was already complete. A thermoperiod with a 5°C amplitude induced diapause in combination with a short-day photoperiod only when the low phase of the thermoperiod coincided with the scotophase. The same thermoperiod did not induce any diapause in constant darkness. The photoperiodic reaction of the laboratory strain used in these experiments appeared to remain constant over a very long period of time and to be independent of the diapause history of previous generations of mites.Although photoperiodic sensitivity was demonstrated during the whole postembryonic development, sensitivity was maximal at the end of the protonymphal instar and declined rapidly during the deutonymphal instar. Only 2 inductive cycles of 10L:14D were required to induce up to 62% diapause if the mites were kept in continuous darkness during the remainder of their development. Long days or continuous light could reverse the inductive effect of a sequence of short-day cycles previously applied to the mites.Light breaks of 1 hr duration applied at different times during the dark period of a 10L:14D photoperiod generated a sharp bimodal response curve with two discrete points of sensitivity to the light breaks at 10 hr after ‘dusk’ and 10 hr before ‘dawn’, thus showing a remarkable similarity with the results obtained in light break experiments with some species of insects.  相似文献

The effect of temperature and photoperiod on the onset and termination of the mature larval diapause of the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella, was examined. The results showed that diapause induction was an extremely temperature-dependent process. Larvae reared at 23°C under short days all entered diapause whereas 90 per cent of those reared at 27°C developed continuously. A photoperiodic response was only demonstrable at 25°C, when diapause was instituted following larval exposure to daily photophases ranging from 8 to 14 hr. An examination of the sensitivity of immature larvae to low temperatures revealed that all instars showed some susceptibility to low temperature induction of diapause. No intermediate instar was found in which the developmental programme could be switched entirely from a diapause to a non-diapause one, or vice versa.Diapause development was also found to be primarily temperature regulated. The rate of termination of diapause at 30°C was significantly higher than that at 25 or 23°C. Continuous exposure to light rather than a daily photoperiod produced the highest rate of diapause development. It was also shown that a period of chilling (5°C) did not accelerate diapause development. The significance of the results in relation to the evolution and geographical distribution of the species is discussed.  相似文献

A study was made of photoperiodic induction of the facultative pupal diapause in the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, reared on artificial diet in the laboratory. The species entered a prolonged diapause when the egg and larval feeding stages were reared in daily photoperiods of 13·5 hr or less. Diapause was induced in all insects at photoperiods ranging from 1 to 13 hr, and part of the population entered diapause at only 15 to 30 min of light per day. Photoperiods of 14 hr or more and continous darkness prevented diapause. Duration of diapause varied with the inductive photoperiod in which the hornworms were reared during the sensitive period. Insects reared in longer diapause-inducing photoperiods within a range of 12 to 13·25 hr remained in diapause longer than those reared in shorter photoperiods. There was no difference in the rate of larval development of hornworms reared in diapause-inducing vs diapause-preventing photoperiods. Temperatures of 26 to 30°C were most favourable for the photoperiodic induction of diapause; at 21°C, the critical photoperiod and incidence of diapause were decreased. Diapause induction was suppressed by low (18°C) and higher (33°C) temperatures. The number of inductive 12L:12D (light = 12 hr; dark = 12 hr) cycles required to induce diapause ranged from as few as 5 for some insects to as many as 12 for others when the post-inductive régimen was continuous light, but with insects previously held in continuous dark, as few as 2 12L:12D cycles during the last 2 days of larval feeding induced diapause in 38 per cent of the population. Only 3 to 4 cycles of 15L:9D during the final larval instar reversed inductive effects of 14 to 15 12L:12D cycles. Photoperiodic sensitivity extended from the late embryo to the end of larval feeding but showed considerable fluctuation during development with maximum sensitivity occurring just before egg hatch and during larval growth.Light breaks applied at different times during the dark period of 12L:12D cycles generated different response curves, depending on the number of cycles in which light breaks were repeated. When repeated for 6 cycles, a unimodal response curve was obtained; 10 cycles produced a bimodal curve and light breaks given for 18 cycles throughout the sensitive period averted diapause regardless of time of night applied. It is suggested that diapause is regulated by a photo- and thermolabile substance that accumulates during long nights (11 hr or more) and acts during the early pupal stage to inhibit the translocation and release of development-promoting neurosecretion from the brain.  相似文献

To determine the condition for diapause induction of a Korean population of Neoseiulus womersleyi, combinations of constant temperatures (14, 16, 18, 20 and 25 °C) and photoperiods (0, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 24 h photophase) were used from egg to adult emergence. Diapause induction was determined by reproductive cessation of adult females. Lower temperature and shorter photophase resulted in higher diapause induction. Critical photophases for diapause induction were 10 and 12 h at 18 and 16 °C, respectively. Diapause-induced N. womersleyi adult females consumed significantly fewer eggs of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, than non-induced females. Field monitoring of N. womersleyi showed that there was no egg-bearing female after 282 Julian date, while a model estimated complete diapause induction at 288 Julian date. Diapause of this predatory mite occurred approximately 2 weeks before diapause of its main prey, T. urticae, in Korean apple orchards. Further study perspectives are discussed relative to the spider mite biological control system in fruit orchards.  相似文献

The predatory bugPodisus maculiventris Say displays a reproductive diapause. In the laboratory, at 23±1°C, when the pre-imaginal stages were reared on larvae ofGalleria melonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) under a short photoperiod of 8L: 16D, diapause was induced in all adult females, whereas under a long photoperiod of 16L: 8D none entered diapause. Nymphal development was faster under the diapause-inducing short photoperiod than under the diapause-averting long photo-period. By contrast, embryonic development was faster under the long than under the short photoperiod. Diapause maintenance was also under the control of photoperiod. After a 10-d-period of chilling at 4°C, diapause was quickly terminated in adults kept under long photoperiod whereas it was maintained in most of those kept under short photoperiod. The predation rate of non-diapause or post-diapause adult females was much higher than that of diapause females.  相似文献

Abstract Mummified pistachios containing fully grown diapause larvae of Eurytoma plotnikovi Nikol'skaya (Hym., Eurytomidae) were collected in early August and late September in coastal northern Greece and subjected to various photoperiod and temperature treatments, then maintained at 19 or 26°C and a long-day (LD 16:8 h), a changing, or a short-day (LD 10:14 h) photoperiod until pupation. In larvae of early August (beginning of diapause) subjected for 20 weeks to 19°C under a long, a changing, or a short photophase, followed by 19°C and a long photophase, 50% of the larvae pupated after 24, 18 and 13 weeks respectively. After exposure for 20 or even 12 weeks to a short photophase and low temperatures (10 or 4°C), pupation occurred after only 7–8 weeks and was more synchronous. The ranges of temperature for diapause development and post-diapause morphogenesis overlap. After exposure for 12 weeks to short days and low temperature, larvae of late September pupated much sooner under long days than under short days and sooner at 26° than at 19°C. E.plotnikovi depends on both temperature and photoperiod for diapause development, low temperature having a strong favourable effect on the earlier part and long day on the later part of diapause. In a few larvae of another pistachio seed wasp, Megastigmus pistaciae Walker, after a long enough period of low temperatures, diapause was terminated normally at 26°C and long days, or at 19°C and long or short days.  相似文献

Abstract
Studies on the reproductive diapause of an introduced insecticide-resistant strain of the phytoseiid predator, Typhlodromus occidentalis Nesbitt, from southern New South Wales are reported. Diapause was induced in 43–59% of predators when reared at 16 or 19°C under photophases of 10–12 h. No diapause induction response curve with changing photophase was evident. Diapause in overwintering predators was readily terminated by exposure to warm temperatures and a long photophase. The rapidity of diapause termination increased progressively during winter. The apparent loss of dependency upon reproductive diapause as an overwintering strategy in this strain of T. occidentalis is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Eight strains of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae, originating from different localities in western and central Europe, with latitudes ranging from 40.5 to 60oN, displayed marked differences in the period of chilling at 4oC required for diapause termination under a diapause-maintaining short-day photoperiodic regime at 19oC, to which the mites were transferred after the cold period. The higher the latitude from which the strains originated the longer was the period of chilling required for diapause termination, suggesting the presence of a gradient in diapause intensity, diapause being deeper the more northern the origin of the strains. Two strains originating from higher altitudes appeared to have a much deeper diapause than expected from their latitudinal origin. In addition, these two mountain strains showed mutual differences in diapause intensity, notwithstanding the fact that they originated from similar latitudes and altitudes; local climatic conditions probably act as strong selective forces with regard to diapause depth. All strains appeared to be sensitive to photoperiod during the period of diapause development. Diapause was quickly completed by a long-day photoperiod (LD 17:7 h), but was maintained by a short-day photoperiod (LD 10:14h). However, even under the latter regime sensitivity to photoperiod gradually diminished and eventually disappeared, thus leading to ‘spontaneous’ termination of diapause. The length of the period of diapause development, as measured by the sensitivity to photoperiod of diapausing mites, varied between strains; it was shorter in the southern strains and longer in the northern strains. The results indicate great variation in diapause intensity between strains, which is probably genetically determined and may have adaptive significance for this widespread species. When young females which had just entered diapause were kept for ever longer periods of time under the diapause inducing short-day regime at which they had been reared, before being transferred to the cold room, the duration of the period of chilling required for diapause termination was found to decrease proportionally in all three strains tested. These results suggest that intensification of diapause does not occur in T. urticae; diapause intensity seems to be highest at the beginning of diapause and to diminish gradually during diapause development.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the reproductive and life‐history traits of Chrysomela populi L. were investigated in Shobara (34°52′N, 133°01′E), Japan, in 2004 and 2005. Larvae were hatched and reared under natural photoperiod and temperature in 8 different periods between late April and early September in 2004. The incidence of adult diapause increased with progression of the season in 2004. The critical timing of diapause induction, as defined by 50% of females entering diapause, was estimated to occur between late July and early August. No effects of season on the survival rate from hatching to adult emergence, percentage ovipositing females and percentage females that deposited viable eggs were clearly detected. Adult weight at emergence fluctuated seasonally, which was probably caused by air temperature. No effect of season on the oviposition period was observed among females that averted diapause. Females that entered diapause in 2004 started oviposition from the first day of May in 2005. Reproductive output was significantly greater in diapause females than in non‐diapause females. This increase in the reproductive output of diapause females was caused by elongation of the oviposition period and consequently by enlargement of the number of egg clutches deposited. These results suggest that the seasonal timing of diapause induction in females of C. populi would be affected by various risks and benefits to reproduction and survival.  相似文献

Development of the parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) at low temperatures was determined to identify rearing conditions that might result in adults that were in reproductive diapause. Diapausing adults would be expected to survive cold storage longer than nondiapausing adults for use in biological control programs. Only a few eggs were found in the ovaries when H. hebetor females were reared during the immature stages at 17.5 and 20°C with a 16-h photoperiod, and the ovaries were poorly developed and contained no eggs when females were reared with a 10-h photoperiod in these low temperatures. Rearing H. hebetor at 17.5 and 20°C did not result in diapause of immature stages, but did appear to result in possible adult reproductive diapause when the immature stages were reared with a 10-h photoperiod. Females reared during the immature stages at 17.5°C with a10-h photoperiod lived longer and took longer to lay their first eggs and to lay 50% of their eggs than those females reared at 17.5°C with a16-h photoperiod. Females reared during the immature stages at 20°C with a10-h photoperiod took longer to lay their first eggs and to lay 50% of their eggs, and they had a lower respiration rate, than those females reared at 20°C with a16-h photoperiod. Females that were reared in conditions that appeared to induce reproductive diapause resumed oviposition and their respiration rate increased soon after being transferred to a higher temperature (27.5°C). Thus, females reared at a 10-h photoperiod at 17.5 and 20°C appear to enter reproductive diapause.  相似文献

Abstract To investigate the seasonal adaptation strategies of Ophraella communa to new habitats, the effects and regulation mechanisms of photoperiod and temperature on the reproductive diapause in a population collected from Changsha, Hunan were examined. Adults showed obvious reproductive diapause, which was regulated by photoperiod and temperature. At 30°C, there was no adult diapause occurring under either long‐day or short‐day conditions; at 25°C the pre‐oviposition period was short and fecundity was high in adult females under L : D 16 : 8 h, whereas under L : D 12 : 12 h, a few females entered reproductive diapause; at 20°C under short‐day conditions, all female adults entered diapause. The pre‐oviposition period was significantly prolonged when the pupae and adults were transferred from long‐days to short‐days, but the day length influence was not obvious when they were transferred only in the adult stage. However, the fecundity dropped greatly no matter whether the photoperiod shifted to short‐days only in the adult stage or whether the shift occurred in both the pupal and adult stage. The fecundity was extremely low when photoperiod shifted from long‐days to short‐days in both pupal and adult stages. This was an indication that the pupal and adult stages were the photoperiod‐sensitive stage for adult reproductive diapause. This was especially true for the photoperiod in the pupal stage, which has a distinctly significant regulative effect on reproductive diapause. Additionally, this article also addresses the reason for different photoperiodic response patterns in reproductive diapause induction between the Changsha strain and the Tsukuba strain (Japan) of O. communa.  相似文献

Photoperiod and temperature conditions known to induce diapause in tropical arthropods were tested on two generations (G0 and G1) of the phytoseiid, Euseius fustis. Failure to lay eggs or a pre-oviposition period longer than 15 days were the criteria used to determine whether females were in diapause. Females reared from egg to adult and held throughout adult life under cyclic temperatures of 29/20°C in combination with long photophases of 16L: 8D and 14L: 10D showed no indication of aestival diapause. Similarly, hibernal diapause was not induced in females reared under a constant temperature of 18°C and a photophase of 8L: 16D. Under the various test conditions, females initiated oviposition within an average of 4 days. Overall, pre-oviposition patterns for G0 and G1 females were similar under the same test conditions. Reproductive patterns based on the mean number of eggs per female per day varied only slightly between generations for the same treatments. No behavioural or morphological attributes associated with diapause were observed.  相似文献

Abstract Adults of Pyrrhocoris apterus (L.) (Heteroptera: Pyrrhocoridae) reared at 26°C had a considerably lower supercooling point (SCP) in diapause-inducing (LD 12:12 h) than in diapause-inhibiting (LD 18:6 h) photoperiodic regimes. Exposure of the insects to diapause-inducing acclimation conditions (LD 8:16 h and a temperature of 20°C during photophase and 5°C during scotophase) for 2–3 weeks had very little effect on the SCP, irrespective of the rearing photoperiod. Allatectomized adults kept continuously at LD 18:6 h and 26°C had high SCP similar to intact or sham-operated insects. In contrast to non-allatectomized insects, the SCP of allatectomized insects decreased after an exposure of from 2 to 3 weeks to diapause-inducing acclimation conditions (see above) almost to the level found in the intact diapausing insects. The relationship between the decrease of SCP and ‘diapause syndrome’ (de Wilde, 1970) is discussed.  相似文献

The predatory miteAmblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) is an important biological control agent for thrips in commercial greenhouses, but its effectiveness in fall and winter is limited by reproductive diapause induced under short day conditions. Influence of photoperiod and temperature on diapause induction was investigated to provide information for successful management of the predator. Under 8∶16 (L∶D) photoperiods and 22°C photophase temperatures, diapause incidence was inversely related to scotophase temperature, decreasing from 100% diapause at 15°C to no diapause at 21°C. In continuous darkness, diapause was induced by thermoperiods of 20∶10 and 22∶17 and 22∶17 but not 25∶15°C (T∶C) (8h thermophase). Critical daylength for inducing diapause under 22∶17°C (T∶C) was 12.45 h, which was consistent with the trend in diapause incidence in mites collected from an established greenhouse population September to November. MostA. cucumeris diapaused only when exposed to diapause inducing conditions throughout their juvenile development and none stopped laying eggs when transferred from nondiapause to diapause inducing conditions as adults. After 14 generations of genetic selection for a nondiapause strain, diapause incidence was 33.3%.   相似文献

During autumn and winter (October–February)Cybocephalus nigriceps nigriceps (J. Sahlberg) adults undergo a facultative diapause. The diapausing adults agregate in hiding places, development of the ovaries is arrested, and prey consumption is lowered. Diapause can be prevented by exposure to a long-day photoperiod (16 hr light) at high temperatures (29° and 32°C). Diapause is induced mainly by short-day conditions, but the termination of diapause is affected by both photoperiod (long-day conditions) and temperature (29°, 32° and 34°C). In mature females, diapause induction causes ovarian degeneration. The induction or inhibition of adult diapause is affected by photoperiods occurring during larval development as well as during adult life.  相似文献

In Tetranychus spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae), diapausing females have a conspicuous orange body colour, which is used as an indicator of diapause induction in many laboratory studies. However, to which extent body colour reflects reproductive activity is scarcely investigated. In this study, we investigated the relationship between body colour, reproductive arrest, and food intake in the inbred strain of T. pueraricola individually reared at 20 °C with a 10:14 h light: dark photoperiod. Our results showed that (1) body colour is a good indicator of reproductive arrest 11 days after adult emergence but does not completely reflect reproductive status at an earlier age; (2) even orange females intermittently feed, and the arrest of feeding comes after the change in body colour; and (3) reproducing females have a higher risk of death than non-reproducing females. These results suggest that measurement of diapause incidence by body colour alone may miss the variation in reproductive status in early adult life.  相似文献

Gryllus campestris has two types of development: one consists of rapid growth followed by a diapause in the penultimate larval stage, the ‘protostage’, and the other of slow growth without diapause. Experiments were designed to find the details of the programme for the two types of development.Two main temperatures, 30 and 20°C, were chosen. The sensitive period of the life cycle at 20°C was detected by subjecting insects to this temperature for a determined and increasing number of days before rearing them at 30°C during the rest of larval life. Conversely, insects were reared first at 30°C for a determined and increasing number of days and then transferred to 20°C. All these experiments led to the conclusion that the sensitive period occurs in the three last larval stages before the protostage, and that the animal is capable of following only two types of development. Experiments in which the speed of growth was slowed down by rearing insects at a cooler temperature (12°C) show that the conditions of the formation programme are not simply linked to a retardation of growth.The main effect of changing the length of days is to synchronize the arrival of all the insects at the protostage before the autumn, no matter whether the data of birth was spring or summer, or whether the number of larval stages was influenced: this explains the univoltinism of this species. Further experiments consisting of changing the length of days in the opposite direction from that of the natural seasonal evolution (increasing: 10 to 16 hr light/day instead of decreasing 16 to 10 hr) show that the programme is disturbed and subsequently the morphology of the animals is affected.To understand the genetic background of the programme a non-diapausing strain was used. It is demonstrated that selection eliminates diapause when reared at 30°C as well as normal survival when reared at 20°C. Therefore, the hypothesis of a ‘unitary system’ is here proposed for these two types of development. Hybridization of the diapausing and non-diapausing strains shows that the expression of ‘diapause’ as a response to high temperature is influenced by photoperiodism; it is dominant in short days and recessive in long days.  相似文献

Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) exhibits a facultative pupal diapause, which depends on temperature and photoperiod. Pupal diapause is induced at 20 degrees C by short photoperiods and inhibited by long photoperiods during the larval stage. However, in some pupae (35% of males and 57% of females) of a non-selected field population from Okayama Prefecture (34.6 degrees N), diapause is not induced by short photoperiods. In the present experiment, the importance of temperature for diapause induction was studied in the non-diapausing strain, which was selected from such individuals reared at 20 degrees C under a short photoperiod of 10L:14D. Furthermore, the sensitive stage for thermal determination of pupal diapause was determined by transferring larvae of various instars and pupae between 20 degrees C and 15 degrees C. Diapause was induced by 15 degrees C without respect to photoperiod. When larvae or pupae reared from eggs at 20 degrees C under a short or a long photoperiod were transferred to 15 degrees C in the periods of the middle fifth instar to the first three days after pupation, the diapause induction rate was significantly reduced in both males and females, especially in females. In contrast, when larvae or pupae reared at 15 degrees C were transferred to 20 degrees C in the same periods, diapause was induced in males, but not in females. However, the diapause induction rate of pupae transferred to 20 degrees C on the fourth day after pupation was significantly increased in females. The results show that temperature is the major diapause cue in the photoperiod-insensitive strain and the periods of middle fifth larval instar to early pupal stage are the thermal sensitive stages for pupal diapause induction with some different responses to temperatures between males and females in H. armigera.  相似文献
