A “long‐backed” scenario of hominin vertebral evolution posits that early hominins possessed six lumbar vertebrae coupled with a high frequency of four sacral vertebrae (7:12‐13:6:4), a configuration acquired from a hominin‐panin last common ancestor (PLCA) having a vertebral formula of 7:13:6‐7:4. One founding line of evidence for this hypothesis is the recent assertion that the “Lucy” sacrum (A.L. 288‐1an, Australopithecus afarensis) consists of four sacral vertebrae and a partially‐fused first coccygeal vertebra (Co1), rather than five sacral vertebrae as in modern humans. This study reassesses the number of sacral vertebrae in Lucy by reexamining the distal end of A.L.288‐1an in the context of a comparative sample of modern human sacra and Co1 vertebrae, and the sacrum of A. sediba (MH2). Results demonstrate that, similar to S5 in modern humans and A. sediba, the last vertebra in A.L. 288‐1an exhibits inferiorly‐projecting (right side) cornua and a kidney‐shaped inferior body articular surface. This morphology is inconsistent with that of fused or isolated Co1 vertebrae in humans, which either lack cornua or possess only superiorly‐projecting cornua, and have more circularly‐shaped inferior body articular surfaces. The level at which the hiatus' apex is located is also more compatible with typical five‐element modern human sacra and A. sediba than if only four sacral vertebrae are present. Our observations suggest that A.L. 288‐1 possessed five sacral vertebrae as in modern humans; thus, sacral number in “Lucy” does not indicate a directional change in vertebral count that can provide information on the PLCA ancestral condition. ABSTRACT. Many advances have been made in our knowledge of the biology of foraminifera over the past several decades. Fine structural, biophysical, and molecular biological studies have shown that the most prominent components of their distinctive bidirectional granuloreliculopods are bundles of micro tubules linked by crossbridges to each other, as well as to membrane-bound organelles and the plasma membrane. the microtubules ratchet past each other as dynein transduces the free energy of ATP to produce pseudopodal movements. In spite of the fact that there are over 40,000 described species of living and fossil species of foraminifera, there have been many recent exciting discoveries of new species and groups. New casting techniques are providing us with greater understanding of the complexities and functional aspects of form in the group. Significant advances are being made in understanding the distribution and energetics of deep-sea forms. Larger and planktonic foraminifera are the hosts for a particularly diverse range of endosymbiotic algae, including dinoflagellates, chlorophytes, unicellular rhodophytes, and diatoms. Chloroplast husbandry also occurs. Significant research effort has been expended yielding us considerable insight into various aspects of the endosymbiotic phenomenon. A unified conceptual framework has been drawn to help us understand the life cycle options found in foraminifera.  相似文献

This paper presents some new arguments for the metameric-wonn-theory for the evolution of the Vertebrates (Gutmann 1966a). Metameric coelomoducts in Enteropneust larvae (Goodrich 1947) which should be interpreted as metanephridia show that the Enteropneusts can be derived from metameric Chordate-like predecessors. The myomeres of Branchiostoma are no solid organs as there exist sclerocoels. These must be interpreted as vestigial coelomic cavities. They can be cited as a proof for the metameric worm-theory. They function as a canal system, which gathers excretory stuff in the myomeres which these organs could otherwise not get rid of. The coelom-cavities are cleaned by the protonephridia in the gill region. Some additional details of the phylogenetic transformation of metameric coelom cavities into myomeres are reconstructed. It is shown that the problem of coelomic and myomeric metamerism cannot be solved in the way proposed in the literature concerned with this question. The metameric-worm-theory for the evolution of the Vertebrates pretends that metameric metanephridia were fused on the lower level of Vertebrate phylogeny and formed the archinephric ducts. A paper of Goodrich (1947) shows that there are similar cases of fused metanephridia in some Annelids. These are parallels to the postulated formation of the metanephridia in the lowest Vertebrates. The archinephric duct acquired its muscular coat when it was formed by fusion of metanephridia in the bodywall. Muscles of the body wall took over a new function by making peristaltic movements of the newly formed archinephric ducts possible. When the archinephric duct was moved back into the coelom it did not lose the still functioning muscular coat.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the wall layers and ornamentative features of Scenedesmus pannonicus and S. longus are described using carefully correlated freeze-etched replicas, thin sections and scanning electron micrographs. The two species arc enclosed by different types of ornamented layers, S. pannonicus by the tightly filling, “warty” layer and S. longus by the loosely fitting, “reticulate” layer, held off the coenobium by 2 types of tubular propping spikelets and rosettes. The reticulate layer has an intricate substructure, especially when studied with freeze-etching. Its inner and outer surfaces appear different, as is its attachment to the 2 types of spikelets. Whole cells of S. longus subjected to acetolysis lack the cellulose wall and cytoplasm, but all other surface features survive, including the Trilaminar Sheath (TLS); this ornamentation cannot be “pectic.” The cellulose wall and ornamentation is unaffected by boiling water alone. Boiling in 6n NaOH removes the surface ornamentation, but the TLS and wall remain; the possibility that these features contain silica is discussed. The terminal spines of both species consist of closely packed spikelets enclosed within a skin of hexagonally-packed subunits. Similar subunits are seen in the propping spikelets of S. longus, and in the rows or “combs” of laterally fused spikelets of S. pannonicus. The warty layer of S. pannonicus is tightly appressed to the TLS except close to where the cells are joined, where it is suspended free. It is composed of a layer of globular subunits, and small indentations form the warts. Single, evenly distributed warts characterize the freely suspended sections of the warty layer, and the layer that encloses young coenobia soon after they have been formed: in contrast, the warts are clumped over the surface of older and larger colonies. Some of the single warts form characteristic double rows, but these latter remain single even on older cells. The surface structure of the warty layer, TLS, and plasmalemma are revealed by the freeze-etching process.  相似文献

The N-carboxyanhydride of δ-benzyl L -α-aminoadipate polymerizes when initiated by strong base through an “active monomer” mechanism. This is shown by the isolation of 6-oxo-L -pipecolic acid from the product mixture, since this byproduct could only arise from an “active monomer” pathway. This study also specifies conditions for preparing high molecular weight poly(δ-benzyl L -α-aminoadipate) in high yield.  相似文献
