Life-history theory, fertility and reproductive success in humans   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
According to life-history theory, any organism that maximizes fitness will face a trade-off between female fertility and offspring survivorship. This trade-off has been demonstrated in a variety of species, but explicit tests in humans have found a positive linear relationship between fitness and fertility. The failure to demonstrate a maximum beyond which additional births cease to enhance fitness is potentially at odds with the view that human fertility behaviour is currently adaptive. Here we report, to our knowledge, the first clear evidence for the predicted nonlinear relationship between female fertility and reproductive success in a human population, the Dogon of Mali, West Africa. The predicted maximum reproductive success of 4.1+/-0.3 surviving offspring was attained at a fertility of 10.5 births. Eighty-three per cent of the women achieved a lifetime fertility level (7-13 births) for which the predicted mean reproductive success was within the confidence limits (3.4 to 4.8) for reproductive success at the optimal fertility level. Child mortality, rather than fertility, was the primary determinant of fitness. Since the Dogon people are farmers, our results do not support the assumptions that: (i) contemporary foragers behave more adaptively than agriculturalists, and (ii) that adaptive fertility behaviour ceased with the Neolithic revolution some 9000 years ago. We also present a new method that avoids common biases in measures of reproductive success.  相似文献

If reproduction impairs an organism's ability to perform other fitness‐related activities, natural selection may favour behavioural adjustments to minimize these conflicts. This is presumably the reason why many animals are anorexic during the breeding season. We studied amphibious sea snakes, a group whose ecology facilitates teasing apart the causal links between reproduction and feeding. In both Laticauda laticaudata and L. saintgironsi in New Caledonia, adult females cease feeding as their eggs develop. The advantages of foregoing feeding do not relate to thermoregulation (because foraging does not entail lower body temperatures), nor are they attributable to physical constraints on abdominal volume (because in a snake's linear body, there is little overlap between the stomach and the oviducts). Instead, female sea kraits appear to cease feeding because their bodily distension impedes locomotor ability, rendering them less effective at foraging and more vulnerable to aquatic predators.  相似文献

Sheep scab is one of the oldest known diseases of sheep. It is caused by either of the mange mites Psoroptes ovis (Fig. 1 and cover) or Sarcoptes scabiei. Abstract Data from a 12‐year field study have allowed us to quantify ‘costs of reproduction’ in a natural population of water pythons (Liasis fuscus) in tropical Australia. Both sexes of pythons cease feeding during the reproductive season. For males, this involves fasting for a 6 week period. Adult males lose weight rapidly over this period (approximately 17% of their body mass) but regain condition in the following months, and do not experience reduced survival. In contrast, reproductive adult females cease feeding for 3 months, lose an average of 44% of their body mass over this period, and experience increased mortality. A causal link between reproductive output and reduced female survival is supported by (i) a decrease in survival rates at female maturation; (ii) a correlation between survival rates and frequency of reproduction, in a comparison among different size classes of adult pythons; and (iii) a lowered survival rate for females that allocated more energy to reproduction. Hence, both sexes experience substantial energy costs of reproduction, but a relatively higher energy cost translates into a survival cost only in females. Such non‐linearities in the relationship between energy costs and survival costs may be widespread, and challenge the value of simple energy‐based measures of 'reproductive effort’.  相似文献

Summary Models incorporating the energetics of individual daphnids (Cladocera) have been developed to predict the effect of environmental variables, particularly food availability, on population dynamics. One of them, that of Kooijman (1986), assumes that all assimilated energy enters a storage compartment prior to use in production and metabolism, and that under starvation the stores are used to support maintenance, reproduction and somatic growth, in that order of priority. This predicts that, under starvation, reproduction and growth will continue for a time, and that after they cease death will be immediate. Another model, that of McCauley et al. (1990), assumes that assimilated energy is used directly for maintenance and production, and that stores are accumulated to support maintenance metabolism under starvation. This predicts that growth and reproduction should cease immediately upon starvation and that death will not be immediate. We have carried out laboratory experiments, manipulating starvation time, on Daphnia magna to distinguish between these two models. The results support features of both models in that reproduction, but not growth, ceases upon starvation. We therefore developed a third model in which both maintenance and growth are supported from stores under starvation, with maintenance taking priority over growth under these conditions.  相似文献

Contrary to our knowledge of the genetic control of midline crossing, the mechanisms that generate and maintain the longitudinal axon pathways of the Drosophila CNS are largely unknown. The longitudinal pathways are formed by ipsilateral pioneer axons and the longitudinal glia. The longitudinal glia dictate these axonal trajectories and provide trophic support to later projecting follower neurons. Follower interneuron axons cross the midline once and join these pathways to form the longitudinal connectives. Once on the contralateral side, longitudinal axons are repelled from recrossing the midline by the midline repulsive signal Slit and its axonal receptor Roundabout. We show that longitudinal glia also transiently express roundabout, which halts their ventral migration short of the midline. Once in contact with axons, glia cease to express roundabout and become dependent on neurons for their survival. Trophic support and cell-cell contact restrict glial movement and axonal trajectories. The significance of this relationship is revealed when neuron-glia interactions are disrupted by neuronal ablation or mutation in the glial cells missing gene, which eliminates glia, when axons and glia cross the midline despite continued midline repellent signalling.  相似文献

At the beginning of the breeding season male Salaria pavo that have eggs in their nests are larger, have more developed anal glands and less intense eye-spots and are located in breeding aggregations. These differences cease to occur from the peak of the breeding season (June—July) onwards. Two scenarios are presented that may explain these results: (1) smaller and younger males may begin to breed later devoting part of the warm season to growth; (2) females may cease to be selective as the nesting space begins to be saturated with eggs. These results raise one methodological and one conceptual question. The search for correlates of male reproductive success must cover different phases of the breeding season to capture the overall dynamics of the processes involved. The operational sex ratio for cavity-spawning fishes should take into account the availability of spawning sites rather than just counting the sexually mature members of each sex.  相似文献

Characteristics are reported for electrical activity of adult rat cardiomyocytes in long-term primary culture. Cells in vitro for 12 to 28 days have mean membrane potential of -53 mV, are electrically excitable, and some are spontaneously contractile. The action potential of these cells has a slow rate of depolarization and is abolished by methoxyverapamil (D-600) but not by tetrodotoxin (TTX). When cells are hyperpolarized by passage of an inward current, spontaneous action potentials cease and action potentials evoked by depolarizing pulses are then TTX sensitive. Fetal bovine serum is a constituent of the culture medium. Its temporary removal causes spontaneous contractility to cease but the cells remain electrically excitable.  相似文献

For some species of cyst-producing dinoflagellates, the sexual life cycle is well studied in laboratory cultures. Dinoflagellate blooms in stratified waters, vertical migration of vegetative cells, and the accumulation of populations within thin layers are well-documented phenomena in nature. We propose a conceptual model that places these phenomena in a functional, ecological context: vegetative cells of a dinoflagellate population display vertical migration, but at the end of the bloom, environmental or internal cues shift the cell cycle to gamete formation. Then the vertical migrations cease, and cells accumulate in a layer at the pycnocline where gametes fuse to form zygotes, which then sink to the sediment as resting cysts. We support this conceptual model with experimental and environmental evidence.  相似文献

A neural model based on a generalization of a model proposed in 1938 in the first edition of the author'sMathematical Biophysics (Chicago: Univ. of Chicago Press) is described. It possesses the property that due to some endogenous or exogenous stimulus, which may be of random nature, a pathway may suddenly begin to fire spontaneously. This spontaneous firing may either gradually spread over other pathways and eventually cease, or it may remain localized within one or a few pathways and then cease. Which of the two types of events occurs depends on the values of a number of parameters. The case of spreading reminds one of Jacksonian epilepsy.  相似文献

Among the few existing works on seasonal variation in metabolic rate of polar species, most have been conducted during summer due to logistic constraints and have been focused on species that cease feeding during winter. In this work, we present the first extensive data set on the seasonal variation in metabolic rate of G. antarctica, an abundant amphipod that feeds throughout the year, and its relationship with body size, potential food availability and temperature. We measured the resting metabolic rate (RMR) of groups of individuals during 6 months from late summer through winter at 4 experimental temperatures and for a wide range of body size. RMR had a negative allometric scaling with body size and showed a tendency to increase with temperature as expected. However, temperature and body size effects on RMR showed a significant temporal variation, and an increase in temperature decreased scaling exponents. RMR at the mean seawater temperature throughout the study showed a strong seasonal variation following food availability: RMR decreased from the end of summer through winter, coinciding with a reduction in microphytobenthos stock, but recovered summer values in August, when an epontic algae boom occurred. The seasonal factorial aerobic scope (×2.37) is lower than benthic Antarctic invertebrates that cease feeding during winter, in agreement with what is expected based on theoretical grounds. Results suggest that seasonal variation of RMR would allow G. antarctica to achieve a high efficiency in energy utilization, while maintaining the ability to exploit sudden changes in food supply.  相似文献

Neotropical katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) are preyed on by gleaning bats, which are known to use male calling songs to locate them. At least one katydid species has been reported to stop singing in response to bat echolocation calls. To investigate the relationship between this behavioural defence and ecological and sensory factors, we surveyed calling song characteristics, song cessation in response to the echolocation calls of a sympatric gleaning bat (Trachops cirrhosus), and T-cell responses (an auditory interneuron sensitive to ultrasound) in five katydid species from Panamá. The two katydid species that stopped singing in response to bat calls (Balboa tibialis and Ischnomela gracilis, Pseudophyllinae) also had the highest T-cell spike number and rate in response to these stimuli. The third pseudophylline species (Docidocercus gigliotosi) did not reliably cease singing and had low T-cell spiking activity. Neoconocephalus affinis (Copiphorinae) produced continuous calling song, possibly preventing males from hearing the bat during singing, and did not show a behavioural response despite high T-cell activity in response to bat calls. Steirodon rufolineatum (Phaneropterinae) did not cease singing and differed in T-cell activity compared to the other species. T-cell function might not be conserved in katydids, and evidence for this idea is discussed.  相似文献

Integrin receptors connect the extracellular matrix to the actin cytoskeleton. This interaction can be viewed as a cyclical liaison, which develops again and again at new adhesion sites only to cease at sites of de-adhesion. Recent work has demonstrated that multidomain proteins play crucial roles in the integrin-actin connection by providing a high degree of regulation adjusted to the needs of the cell. In this review we present several examples of this paradigm and with special emphasis on the ILK-PINCH-parvin complex, which amply demonstrates how structural and signalling functions are linked together.  相似文献

In a small Bahun village in Gorkha district, West Nepal, in only one generation, there has been a huge shift to educating young women and including them in modernity. Ideologies of ‘gender equality’ in education that are promoted in development programs and discourse, and in Maoist rhetoric, have been powerful drivers behind this. In this paper I highlight the gender and generational dynamics of the changing relationship of women to education in Nepal. I argue that the move to educating women is not a simple one, nor is it necessarily a development success story. The importance placed on educating the younger generation, including women, is also very much tied to local Bahun culture, marriage values and status. Bahun villagers of Ludigaun place great importance on both education and marriage. When combined, I argue, education has in fact become dowry. While there have been transformations in education and other modernising processes, as well as in dowry practices, in this paper I show that they have come to maintain traditional hierarchies and to support the status making of the educated Bahun man.  相似文献

Theories of social evolution have predicted that early permanent population concentrations will frequently be unstable, with fissioning the predominant mechanism for resolving intravillage conflict. It has further been suggested that village fissioning will cease with the emergence of higher-level integrative institutions. These processes have remained archaeologically undocumented. In this article I attempt to identify the village fissioning process in the Formative Period of Bolivia's Titicaca Basin. I conclude that village fissioning took place in the Early Formative, and that it ceased with the emergence of a regional religious tradition in the Middle Formative. These results confirm the utility and applicability of the evolutionary model.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibody 75.12 raised against the human ovarian teratocarcinoma cell line PA1 detects a 'Y' or iso-leb glycosidic structure. Using the 75.12 antibody we have established that the Y antigen is expressed on some but not all mouse embryonal carcinoma (EC) lines. The Y or 75.12 antigen-positive EC cell lines F9 and PCC4 cease to express the antigen after differentiation induced with retinoic acid and this decreased expression parallels the morphological differentiation of the EC cells. These results support not only the idea that carbohydrate structures present on embryonic cells undergo marked alteration during differentiation, but also that established mouse EC cells may differ in their differentiation states.  相似文献

Ionic and nonionic detergents have little effect on respiring bacteria, but in cultures poisoned with KCN rapid solubilization of the cell membrane, as indicated by turbidity losses, takes place. Ultraviolet radiations cause Escherichia coli cells grown in minimal medium with glycerol as a carbon source to cease respiring and growing about 1 h after irradiation. We tested the effect of the nonionic detergent Triton X-100 on growth and cell membrane dissolution (both measured by turbidity changes), respiration, and viability of unirradiated and irradiated E. coli B/r cells. When the detergent was added to cells immediately after irradiation, a decrease in turbidity occurred only when respiration was about to cease; when it was added after cessation of respiration, the turbidity loss was immediate. In both cases the turbidity loss was about 60%, and disintegration of the cell walls did not take place. 5-Fluorouracil (FU) and thermal (42 C) treatments cause respiration of irradiated cells to be maintained and also cause viability increases. Irradiated cells treated with FU and detergent show no turbidity loss just prior to the time respiration normally ceases, but a loss does occur in irradiated cells incubated with detergent at 42 C. We conclude that FU maintains respiration for all of the cells, but that thermal treatment maintains respiration for only part of the cells. In all cases the detergent had only a negligible effect on the respiration and viability of unirradiated and irradiated cells. We conclude that Triton X-100 causes solubilization of cell membranes of only nonrespiring cells that are not destined to survive.  相似文献

Recent theory predicted that male advertisement will reliably signal investment in paternal care in species where offspring survival requires paternal care and males allocate resources between advertisement and care. However, the predicted relationship between care and advertisement depended on the marginal gains from investment in current reproductive traits. Life history theory suggests that these fitness gains are also subject to a trade‐off between current and future reproduction. Here, we investigate whether male signalling remains a reliable indicator of parental care when males allocate resources between current advertisement, paternal care and survival to future reproduction. We find that advertisement is predicted to remain a reliable signal of male care but that advertisement may cease to reliably indicate male quality because low‐quality males are predicted to invest in current reproduction, whereas higher‐quality males are able to invest in both current reproduction and survival to future reproduction.  相似文献

Using data from the World Fertility and Demographic and Health Surveys of Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, we model the effects of education on three demographic outcomes: the timing of first sexual union, contraceptive use, and fertility. These effects are examined over time and across geographic areas using a multivariate framework. We find substantial improvements in female educational attainment over the last fifty years and a strong relationship between education and the demographic outcomes. Each successive increment in education is associated with declines in the marriage rate, increased contraceptive use, and lower fertility. Education accounts for some of the changes over time in the demographic outcomes, but the pattern varies by outcome, time period, and geographic area. In support of the social diffusion hypothesis, our results indicate that educational differences in reproductive behavior are reduced as the level of development increases and societies pass through their demographic transition.  相似文献
