Seasonal pattern of acetylene reduction (AR) and shoot nitrogen accumulation was studied in nine groundnut cultivars. Shoot N accumulation by all the cultivars was maintained until shortly before maturity and it occurred faster over the reproductíve growth phase than over the earlier phases. In all cultivars plant AR (PAR) did not reflect this pattern of N accumulation, being greater over the vegetative and pod initiation phases. This suggests that the commonly observed low PAR values for groundnut over the reproductive growth phase may be the result of factors other than sink competition. There were significant interactions of cultivar with stage of crop growth for PAR, nodule mass, and specific nitrogenase activity (SNA). Virginia types generally showed better nodulation, higher N2-fixing capacity (both PAR and SNA) than valencias, and significant differences were observed between cultivars within a botanical type.  相似文献

The growth pattern of the root system of young rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) was studied in relation to shoot development over a period of 3 months. Temporal and spatial variations in elongation and branching processes were examined for the different root types, by means of root observation boxes. Shoot growth was typically rhythmic. Root development was periodic and related to leaf expansion. Root elongation was depressed during leaf growth, whereas branching was enhanced. Consequently, highly branched areas with vigorous secondary roots alternated along the taproot with poorly branched areas with shorter roots. Root types were not affected to the same degree by shoot competition: during leaf expansion, taproot growth was just depressed but remained continuous, the emergence and elongation rates of secondary roots were significantly affected and the elongation rates of tertiary roots fell to zero. These results were consistent with the hypothesis that root growth is related to competition for assimilates and to the sink strength of the different root types, whereas root branching appeared to be promoted by leaf development.  相似文献

It is commonly stated that nitrogen (N) influences biomass accumulation in plants. For trees, however, a precise characterisation of shoot response to N and its impact on architecture is lacking. We attempted to study on the phytomer scale the effects of N limitation on shoot growth components, i.e. leaf emergence rate, final internode length and branching on the main and secondary axes of 1-year-old peach trees [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch]. Trees were grown on recycled nutrient solutions in which N concentration was restored once a week. We used two hydroponic set-ups in which weekly N availability, i.e. amount of N per tree, differed being either low (N1) or high (N2). Net N availability was defined weekly as the relative amount of N remaining in each set-up before solution replenishment. It declined with time and three periods of contrasting net N availability were identified. During these periods, leaf emergence rate and final internode length were similar on the main axis of N1 and N2 trees, so too was the distribution of secondary axes along the main axis. Secondary axes responded to N limitation by decreasing their growth components according to their position along the main axis. Differences were most important for basal secondary axes. Leaf emergence rate and final internode length responded similarly to N availability depending on axis order and position in the tree. It was concluded that N availability, particularly during the period of maximum growth of axes, influenced the shoot growth components and thus tree architecture.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Shoot architecture variability in grapevine (Vitis vinifera) was analysed using a generic modelling approach based on thermal time developed for annual herbaceous species. The analysis of shoot architecture was based on various levels of shoot organization, including pre-existing and newly formed parts of the stem, and on the modular structure of the stem, which consists of a repeated succession of three phytomers (P0-P1-P2). METHODS: Four experiments were carried out using the cultivar 'Grenache N': two on potted vines (one of which was carried out in a glasshouse) and two on mature vines in a vineyard. These experiments resulted in a broad diversity of environmental conditions, but none of the plants experienced soil water deficit. KEY RESULTS: Development of the main axis was highly dependent on air temperature, being linearly related to thermal time for all stages of leaf development from budbreak to veraison. The stable progression of developmental stages along the main stem resulted in a thermal-time based programme of leaf development. Leaf expansion rate varied with trophic competition (shoot and cluster loads) and environmental conditions (solar radiation, VPD), accounting for differences in final leaf area. Branching pattern was highly variable. Classification of the branches according to ternary modular structure increased the accuracy of the quantitative analysis of branch development. The rate and duration of leaf production were higher for branches derived from P0 phytomers than for branches derived from P1 or P2 phytomers. Rates of leaf production, expressed as a -function of thermal time, were not stable and depended on trophic competition and environmental conditions such as solar radiation or VPD. CONCLUSIONS: The application to grapevine of a generic model developed in annual plants made it possible to identify constants in main stem development and to determine the hierarchical structure of branches with respect to the modular structure of the stem in response to intra- and inter-shoot trophic competition.  相似文献

Twelve commercial clones of poplar were cultured in vitro from meristem lips (0.3–0.5 mm diameter), shoot tips (4–6 mm long) and nodal segments (5–10 mm long). Shoot-producing cultures were obtained from 4, 32 and 70% of meristem lips, shoot tips and nodal segments within 12, 6 and 4 weeks, respectively. The genotype of cultures had a greater influence on development of shoot-producing cultures than medium composition. Cultivars Max/Ber and Oxford had the highest rates of establishment in culture and subsequent shoot proliferation, while P. tacamahaca, P. trichocarpa and cv. Robusta exhibited very low rates of establishment and low vigor in vitro. Shoot tip development was best on agar-solidified medium whereas liquid medium resulted in vitrification. Higher rates of axillary shoot production from established cultures were obtained with benzyladeninc or zeutin than with 2-isopen-tenyladenine. deducting the benzyladenine concentration from 4,4 to 1.1 μ M , increased the production of elongated shoots suitable for rooting.  相似文献

Growth and uptake of N, P, S, K, Ca and Mg in barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) were studied in water culture using young plants of 17 cultivars. Large varietal differences were obtained in dry weight production and mineral accumulation. The differences were not the same for plants grown in high- and low-salt media. For plants grown under both conditions there was a good correlation between dry weight production and total N content. Total shoot contents of K and Ca were closely correlated with shoot dry weight. Utilization of P and S in high- and low-salt plants and Mg in low-salt plants was variable in relation to dry weight production in both types of nutrient conditions. The correlation between dry weight and total content of Mg in high-salt plants was good. These differences in mineral economy between young barley plants were partly caused by varietal differences in relative growth rate, and in high-salt seedlings also by differences in seed content of N. The significance of root size, and of uptake, root-shoot partitioning and use-efficiency of specific elements differed; all four factors were important for P and S, but had varying impact on K, Mg and Ca. For N, differences in root size and ion accumulation were the most important factors causing varietal variation in mineral nutrition. – In a special experiment seedlings of barley were transferred to N-free nutrient solution after six days of adequate N supply. There was no significant varietal differences in use-efficiency ratio of N. Root/shoot partitioning of N was unaffected.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Soil water deficit is a major abiotic stress with severe consequences for the development, productivity and quality of crops. However, it is considered a positive factor in grapevine management (Vitis vinifera), as it has been shown to increase grape quality. The effects of soil water deficit on organogenesis, morphogenesis and gas exchange in the shoot were investigated. METHODS: Shoot organogenesis was analysed by distinguishing between the various steps in the development of the main axis and branches. Several experiments were carried out in pots, placed in a greenhouse or outside, in southern France. Soil water deficits of various intensities were imposed during vegetative development of the shoots of two cultivars ('Syrah' and 'Grenache N'). KEY RESULTS: All developmental processes were inhibited by soil water deficit, in an intensity-dependent manner, and sensitivity to water stress was process-dependent. Quantitative relationships with soil water were established for all processes. No difference was observed between the two cultivars for any criterion. The number of leaves on branches was particularly sensitive to soil water deficit, which rapidly and strongly reduced the rate of leaf appearance on developing branches. This response was not related to carbon availability, photosynthetic activity or the soluble sugar content of young expanding leaves. The potential number of branches was not a limiting factor for shoot development. CONCLUSIONS: The particularly high sensitivity to soil water deficit of leaf appearance on branches indicates that this process is a major determinant of the adaptation of plant leaf area to soil water deficit. The origin of this particular developmental response to soil water deficit is unclear, but it seems to be related to constitutive characteristics of branches rather than to competition for assimilates between axes differing in sink strength.  相似文献

We investigate the characteristics of individual tree response to competition on source–sink balance through the functional–structural plant model GreenLab. Four Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.) trees were destructively sampled and were divided into two groups: high-density group and low-density group. First, the effects of density on organ dimensions and on organ relative mass were analysed based on experimental measurements. These were primary indicators of the plant response to competition. Second, the hidden parameters of the GreenLab model, as well as a tree-specific characteristic surface, were estimated using the data of total tree biomass for needle and wood compartments, for each of the four trees in parallel. The quality of the fitting is finally validated using data of individual organ mass at shoot level for the sampled branches. The Mann–Whitney Student’s t test showed that there were significant differences between the shoot attributes of the two groups for shoot diameter, shoot biomass and needle biomass. No significant difference was found for current year shoot lengths of the two groups. The parametric identification of the model allowed estimating and comparing the amount of biomass that was allocated to primary growth and to secondary growth in the two density conditions. It showed that biomass allocated to secondary growth (ring compartment) was the most strongly affected by density, and that the organ demand satisfaction ratio profiles of each of these trees were a relevant, integrated indicator of the tree state.  相似文献

The symbiotic performance of four pea ( Pisum sativum L.) cultivars in combination with each of four strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum was studied in growth chamber experiments in order to estimate the effects of cultivars, strains and cultivar × strain interaction on the variation in dry weight, N content and dry weight/N ratio. At harvest 63 days after planting, cultivars accounted for 75% of the variation in dry weight, while the Rhizobium strains accounted for 63% of the variation in N-content and 70% of the variation in dry weight/N ratio. Cultivar × strain interactions were statistically significant, but of minor quantitative importance, accounting for 5–15% of the total variation. Rhizobium strains also influenced the partitioning of N between reproductive and vegetative plant parts and between root and shoot biomass.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The growth of crops in a mixture is more variable and difficult to predict than that in pure stands. Light partitioning and crop leaf area expansion play prominent roles in explaining this variability. However, in many crops commonly grown in mixtures, including the forage species alfalfa, the sensitivity and relative importance of the physiological responses involved in the light modulation of leaf area expansion are still to be established. This study was designed to assess the relative sensitivity of primary shoot development, branching and individual leaf expansion in alfalfa in response to light availability.

Methods

Two experiments were carried out. The first studied isolated plants to assess the potential development of different shoot types and growth periods. The second consisted of manipulating the intensity of competition for light using a range of canopies in pure and mixed stands at two densities so as to evaluate the relative effects on shoot development, leaf growth, and plant and shoot demography.

Key Results

Shoot development in the absence of light competition was deterministic (constant phyllochrons of 32·5 °Cd and 48·2 °Cd for primary axes and branches, branching probability of 1, constant delay of 1·75 phyllochron before axillary bud burst) and identical irrespective of shoot type and growth/regrowth periods. During light competition experiments, changes in plant development explained most of the plant leaf area variations, with average leaf size contributing to a lesser extent. Branch development and the number of shoots per plant were the leaf area components most affected by light availability. Primary axis development and plant demography were only affected in situations of severe light competition.

Conclusions

Plant leaf area components differed with regard to their sensitivity to light competition. The potential shoot development model presented in this study could serve as a framework to integrate light responses in alfalfa crop models.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plant architecture and its interaction with agronomic practices and environmental constraints are determinants of the structure of the canopy, which is involved in carbon acquisition and fruit quality development. A framework for the quantitative analysis of grapevine (Vitis vinifera) shoot architecture, based on a set of topological and geometrical parameters, was developed for the identification of differences between cultivars and the origins of phenotypic variability. METHODS: Two commercial cultivars ('Grenache N', 'Syrah') with different shoot architectures were grown in pots, in well-irrigated conditions. Shoot topology was analysed, using a hidden semi-Markov chain and variable-order Markov chains to identify deviations from the normal pattern of succession of phytomer types (P0-P1-P2), together with kinematic analysis of shoot axis development. Shoot geometry was characterized by final internode and individual leaf area measurements. KEY RESULTS: Shoot architecture differed significantly between cultivars. Secondary leaf area and axis length were greater for 'Syrah'. Secondary leaf area distribution along the main axis also differed between cultivars, with secondary leaves preferentially located towards the basal part of the shoot in 'Syrah'. The main factors leading to differences in leaf area between the cultivars were: (a) slight differences in main shoot structure, with the supplementary P0 phytomer on the lower part of the shoot in 'Grenache N', which bears a short branch; and (b) an higher rate and duration of development of branches bearing by P1-P2 phytomers related to P0 ones at the bottom of the shoot in 'Syrah'. Differences in axis length were accounted for principally by differences in individual internode morphology, with 'Syrah' having significantly longer internodes. This trait, together with a smaller shoot diameter, may account for the characteristic 'droopy' habit of 'Syrah' shoots. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the architectural parameters involved in the phenotypic variability of shoot architecture in two grapevine cultivars. Differences in primary shoot structure and in branch development potential accounted for the main differences in leaf area distribution between the two cultivars. By contrast, shoot shape seemed to be controlled by differences in axis length due principally to differences in internode length.  相似文献

Background and Aims

There is increasing interest in the development of plant growth models representing the complex system of interactions between the different determinants of plant development. These approaches are particularly relevant for grapevine organogenesis, which is a highly plastic process dependent on temperature, solar radiation, soil water deficit and trophic competition.

Methods

The extent to which three plant growth models were able to deal with the observed plasticity of axis organogenesis was assessed. In the first model, axis organogenesis was dependent solely on temperature, through thermal time. In the second model, axis organogenesis was modelled through functional relationships linking meristem activity and trophic competition. In the last model, the rate of phytomer appearence on each axis was modelled as a function of both the trophic status of the plant and the direct effect of soil water content on potential meristem activity.

Key Results

The model including relationships between trophic competition and meristem behaviour involved a decrease in the root mean squared error (RMSE) for the simulations of organogenesis by a factor nine compared with the thermal time-based model. Compared with the model in which axis organogenesis was driven only by trophic competition, the implementation of relationships between water deficit and meristem behaviour improved organogenesis simulation results, resulting in a three times divided RMSE. The resulting model can be seen as a first attempt to build a comprehensive complete plant growth model simulating the development of the whole plant in fluctuating conditions of temperature, solar radiation and soil water content.

Conclusions

We propose a new hypothesis concerning the effects of the different determinants of axis organogenesis. The rate of phytomer appearance according to thermal time was strongly affected by the plant trophic status and soil water deficit. Futhermore, the decrease in meristem activity when soil water is depleted does not result from source/sink imbalances.  相似文献

We established a 13‐week greenhouse experiment based on replicated microcosms to test whether the effects of defoliation on grassland plants and soil organisms depend on plant species composition and the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. The experiment constituted of three treatment factors – plant species composition, inoculation of an AM fungus and defoliation – in a fully factorial design. Plant species composition had three levels: (1) Trifolium repens monoculture (T), (2) Phleum pratense monoculture (P) and (3) mixture of T. repens and P. pratense (T+P), while the AM inoculation and the defoliation treatment had two levels: (1) no inoculation of AM fungi and (2) inoculation of the AM fungus Glomus claroideum BEG31, and (1) no trimming, and (2) trimming of all plant material to 6 cm above the soil surface three times during the experiment, respectively. At the final harvest, AM colonization rate of plant roots differed between the plant species compositions, being on average 45% in T, 33% in T+P and 4% in P. Defoliation did not affect the colonization rate in T but raised the rate from 1% to 7% in P and from 20% to 45% in T+P. Shoot production and standing shoot and root biomass were 48%, 85% and 68% lower, respectively, in defoliated than in non‐defoliated systems, while the AM fungus did not affect shoot production and root mass but reduced harvested shoot mass by 8% in non‐defoliated systems. Of the plant quality attributes, defoliation enhanced the N concentration of harvested shoot biomass by 129% and 96% in P and T+P, respectively, but had no effect in T, while the C concentration of shoot biomass was on average 2.7% lower in defoliated than in non‐defoliated systems. Moreover, defoliation reduced shoot C yield (the combined C content of defoliated and harvested shoot biomass) on average by 47% across all plant species compositions and shoot N yield by 37% in T only. In contrast to defoliation, the AM fungus did not affect shoot N and C concentrations or shoot N yield, but induced 10% lower C yield in non‐defoliated systems and 17% higher C yield in defoliated T. In roots, defoliation led to 56% and 21% higher N concentration in P and T+P, respectively, and 28% higher C concentration in P, while the mycorrhizal fungus lowered root N concentration by 9.7% in defoliated systems and had no effect on root C concentrations. In the soil, the nematode community was dominated by bacterivores and the other trophic groups were found in a few microcosms only. Bacterivores were 45% more abundant in defoliated than in non‐defoliated systems, but were not affected by plant species composition or the AM fungus. Soil inorganic N concentration was significantly increased by defoliation in T+P, while the mycorrhizal fungus reduced NH4–N concentration by 40% in T. The results show that defoliation had widespread effects in our experimental systems, and while the effects on plant growth were invariably negative and those on bacterivorous nematodes invariably positive, most effects on plant C and N content and soil inorganic N concentration varied depending on the plant species present. In contrast, the effects of defoliation did not depend on the presence of the AM fungus, which suggests that while the relative abundance of legumes and grasses is likely to have a significant role in the response of legume–grass communities to defoliation, the role of AM fungi may be less important. In line with this, the AM fungus had only a few significant effects on plant and soil attributes in our systems and each of them was modified by defoliation and/or plant species composition. This suggests that the effects of AM fungi in legume–grass communities may largely depend on the plant species present and whether the plants are grazed or not.  相似文献

A glasshouse experiment was undertaken to investigate the effect of mycorrhizal infection on the allocation of phosphorus (P) in agronomically P-efficient (i.e. high yields at low P supply) and inefficient barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars. Four barley cultivars differing in agronomic P-efficiency were inoculated or not inoculated with Glomus etunicatum. Cultivars did not differ in percentage of root length infected. The concentration of P in roots of the inefficient cultivars was higher than that of the efficient cultivars. However, because of changes in root to shoot dry weight ratio and below-ground productivity, mycorrhizal infection significantly reduced the percentage of total plant P in roots of the inefficient cultivars. The distribution of P between root and shoot of P-efficient cultivars was not affected by mycorrhizal infection. Root to shoot dry weight ratio of the P-efficient cultivars was lower than that of the inefficient cultivars, and the decrease in the ratio following infection was significant in inefficient but not in P-efficient cultivars. This study indicates that mycorrhizal infection alters the allocation of P in inefficient cultivars and effectively improves the efficiency of P utilization with respect to shoot growth.  相似文献

Fifteen lettuce cultivars representing three different morphological types were grown in a sand alumina system under conditions of low (deficient) and high (sufficient) P supply. An efficient plant was defined as one that produced a large shoot fresh weight under low P conditions. Cultivars within their respective groups varied significantly for some traits that appeared to be important in determining adaptation to P. This led to the conclusion that accumulation of P in shoot tissue or the total plant was the main difference between efficient and inefficient cultivars. Accumlation of P seemed to be due to a greater absorption capability of roots or greater root mass (weight), depending on the different lettuce groups. Differences in internal use of P did not contribute to differences in shoot fresh weight. The butterhead cultivars were the least efficient plants when grown under low P. Compared to the other groups, plants has lower translocation efficiency and a greater root: shoot ratio. Never-the-less, butterhead cultivars as efficient as the best cultivars of other groups were found. There were no differences between Brazilian and American cultivars for any of the traits analysed, probably due to the fact that in both countries vegetables are bred under high fertility levels and grown with heavy applications of fertilizers. The results of this study demonstrate that there were genotypic variability and/or genotype×environment interaction effects for shoot weight (yield) among the lettuce cultivars grown under low P conditions imposed in the sand-alumina system.  相似文献

Anthropogenic increases in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations can strongly influence the structure and function of ecosystems. Even though lotic ecosystems receive cumulative inputs of nutrients applied to and deposited on land, no comprehensive assessment has quantified nutrient-enrichment effects within streams and rivers. We conducted a meta-analysis of published studies that experimentally increased concentrations of N and/or P in streams and rivers to examine how enrichment alters ecosystem structure (state: primary producer and consumer biomass and abundance) and function (rate: primary production, leaf breakdown rates, metabolism) at multiple trophic levels (primary producer, microbial heterotroph, primary and secondary consumers, and integrated ecosystem). Our synthesis included 184 studies, 885 experiments, and 3497 biotic responses to nutrient enrichment. We documented widespread increases in organismal biomass and abundance (mean response = +48%) and rates of ecosystem processes (+54%) to enrichment across multiple trophic levels, with no large differences in responses among trophic levels or between autotrophic or heterotrophic food-web pathways. Responses to nutrient enrichment varied with the nutrient added (N, P, or both) depending on rate versus state variable and experiment type, and were greater in flume and whole-stream experiments than in experiments using nutrient-diffusing substrata. Generally, nutrient-enrichment effects also increased with water temperature and light, and decreased under elevated ambient concentrations of inorganic N and/or P. Overall, increased concentrations of N and/or P altered multiple food-web pathways and trophic levels in lotic ecosystems. Our results indicate that preservation or restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem functions of streams and rivers requires management of nutrient inputs and consideration of multiple trophic pathways.  相似文献

The performance of the crop plant and the ‘ratoon’plant (lateral shoot succeeding the harvested main shoot) of65 medium-sized False Horn plantains (Musa cv. AAB) was studiedby measuring vegetative and inflorescence (bunch) parameters. From significant regressions between different parameters itappears that taller pseudostems produce leaves at a faster rate, flower earlier and produce heavier infructescences which needmore time to mature. A high yield is determined by vigorousinitial growth of the planted sucker (lateral root). Beforeflowering, there is no sink competition between ratoon and mainpseudostem growth, and fast-growing main pseudostems are accompaniedby fast-growing ratoons. After flowering, competition occursbetween the fructifying inflorescence, a preferential sink andthe ratoon. The results indicate that plantain should not beconsidered as an annual crop. In this experiment the separate and interactive effects of grazing of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae by collembola and of relative germination date on competition between the mycorrhizal perennial grassPanicum virgatum and the non-mycorrhizal annual cruciferBrassica nigra were investigated. In the absence of competition,P. virgatum mass and P uptake were not affected by collembola grazing; grazing did reduce tissue N concentration and root: shoot ratio. Competition fromB. nigra plants of the same age/size (“simultaneous competition”) significantly reducedP. virgatum total, root, and shoot mass relative to control plants not subject to competition. In contrast, when in competition,B. nigra plants did not differ in biomass fromB. nigra controls grown without competition. Simultaneous competition also reduced N and P uptake byP. virgatum, but not byB. nigra. Grazing by collembola during simultaneous competition increased the differences in nutrient uptake and tended to shift the competitive balance further toward the non-mycorrhizalB. nigra. WhenP. virgatum plants were subjected to competition fromB. nigra plants which germinated three weeks later (“offset competition”) the situation was reversed: offsetB. nigra plants were negatively affected by competition while the larger, olderP. virgatum plants were not. Thus, relative germination date is important in determining the relative competitive ability of these two species. Grazing by collembola did not affect offset competition. The grazing of VAM hyphae by collembola appears to increase N availability in this experimental system. Under simultaneous competition, this N is taken up by the more extensive root system ofB. nigra; under offset conditions, the root system of the smallerB. nigra plants is insufficient to take advantage of the added resources. Thus, we suggest that grazing-induced transient changes in nutrient availability and the differential abilities of the two species to make use of these added resources constitute the mechanisms by which relative germination date and collembola grazing influence competition.  相似文献
