Nursing in rabbits occurs inside the nest with circadian periodicity. To determine the contribution of suckling stimulation in regulating such periodicity, we varied the size of the litters provided (1, 2, 4, or 6–8 pups). Nursing does, kept under a 14:10 (L:D) photoperiod, were continuously videotaped from parturition into lactation day 15. Although parturitions occurred throughout the day, a significant negative linear correlation (p?<?0.0001; r?=??0.68) was evident between time of delivery and time of nursing on lactation day 1, regardless of newborn number: longer intervals between these two events were seen in does delivering in the early morning than in those that gave birth late in the day. In rabbits suckling 6–8 pups, a Rayleigh analysis revealed that the population vector best describing their nursing pattern (across lactation days 1–15) had a phase angle?=?58° (corresponding to solar time 0352?h and rho?=?0.78; p?<?0.001). In contrast, the nursing pattern of does nursing litters smaller than 6 pups did not show circadian periodicity; rather, mothers showed multiple entrances into the nest box throughout the day. Cluster analysis revealed that the main equilibrium point of intervals between suckling bouts shifted from 24?h (6–8 pups) to 6?h (4 and 2 pups) and to as low as 4?h with 1 pup. In the groups nursing 2, 4, or 6–8 pups, most nursing episodes were followed by food and water intake. Those mothers also showed self-grooming of the ventrum and nipples after nursing. The incidence of these behaviors was lower in does nursing 1 pup. In conclusion, nursing in rabbits spontaneously occurs with circadian periodicity, but it is largely modulated by a threshold of suckling stimulation. The role of pups' appetite in the regulation of maternal consummatory behavior (food intake of nursing mothers), lactational performance and postpartum diestrus was studied over a period of 45 days postpartum in rats chronically exposed to either underfed or normally fed pups. Experimental rats (n = 10) daily received 5 pups, 4-10-days-old, that had been deprived of food for the preceding 24 h while under the care of nonlactating foster mothers. Control rats (n = 10) received normally fed pups obtained daily from lactating foster mothers. Throughout the experimental period, the daily milk yield (estimated by litter weight gain), the intake of food and water by the mother, as well as the ratio of litter weight gain to mother's intake of food and water were all markedly higher in rats nursing underfed pups than in rats nursing normally fed pups. After a peak in lactation around Day 15 postpartum, experimental rats produced the same amount of milk during extended lactation as they did in the beginning of lactation, while control rats produced only half the amount of milk during extended lactation as they did in early lactation. Regardless of the nutritional state of the suckling pups, maternal body weight increased progressively over the first four weeks of lactation and remained unchanged during the time of extended lactation. The postpartum diestrus and the subsequent diestrous phase in the time of extended lactation were considerably longer in duration in rats that nursed underfed pups. On Day 45 of lactation, prolactin levels were higher and the adrenal glands were larger in experimental rats than in controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of pregnancy on lactation was studied during the third week of lactational pregnancy in postpartum pregnant rats with a delay in implantation of only 1 day (1d-LP rats). In an experimental design in which the suckling litter was prevented from consuming solid food, lactational performance was estimated by weighing the ten-pup suckling litters on days 16-21 of lactation or by measuring maternal weight loss after a nursing spell on day 21. In 1d-LP rats, food consumption as well as lactational performance was lower than it was in nonpregnant lactating rats (L rats) and pregnant-lactating rats with a normal long delay of implantation of at least 6 days (LP rats). The time spent by the pups sucking at the nipples was not different among the three groups, but the number of milk ejections was diminished in 1d-LP dams. Restriction of daily food supply during days 16 to 21 of lactation diminished lactational performance more strongly in 1d-LP rats than it did in L rats; 1d-LP rats conserved protein stores and mobilized fewer minerals than did L rats. The weight and composition of the litter in vitro were not affected by the food restriction. In pregnant-lactating rats (LP and 1d-LP rats), the number of early resorptions was increased in comparison with pregnant rats, showing that lactation can affect the earlier stages of pregnancy. It was concluded that late pregnancy does not affect nursing behaviour, but suppresses lactation by restricting maternal food intake and mobilization of maternal stores. Measurements in serum indicate a causative role for oestradiol, but not for leptin.  相似文献

In mammals, the duration of lactation varies much more than other life history parameters in relation to body mass, both within and between species. The causes of this variation are poorly understood and seem to result from varying conditions of mothers and young. We studied the effect of long-term maternal food restriction on litter mass at birth, duration of lactation and offspring development in the precocial guinea pig. Mild experimental food restriction during reproduction resulted in prolonged nursing behaviour of mothers. Evidence for a threshold mass at weaning was, however, equivocal. In the guinea pig, benefits of prolonged lactation prove hard to understand, because nutritional benefits are minor. Independently of maternal food regime, pups terminated suckling attempts several days after mothers ceased nursing behaviour. The time between the last nursing behaviour and the last suckling attempts was not longer in litters with higher need, that is, in litters of food-restricted females, than in litters of females fed ad libitum. Under food restriction, mothers maintained their own body mass, leading in pups to lower mass at birth, reduced postnatal growth and lower body mass at maturity. Guinea pig mothers appear to be selected to value their own condition more than that of a litter. We suggest that lengthening of the nursing period under poor conditions is a life history response primarily of precocial mammals.  相似文献

This study was conducted to assess the effects of endophyte-infected Acremonium coenophialum tall fescue (KY-31) seed (80% infected) on lactation in CD-1 dams and suckling performance of pups as measured by pup survival and growth rates. Twenty-four pairs of mature CD-1 mice were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments: 1) 100% mouse chow ad libitum; 2) 40% endophyte-infected tall fescue seed and 60% mouse chow (w/w); 3) reduced intake (100% chow), adjusted daily to the intake level of Treatment 2; and 4) 60% infected tall fescue seed and 40% chow. The mice were preconditioned on their respective diets for 100 d prior to 96 h of cohabitation between pairs of males and females. At parturition the litters were removed, and each dam was given a litter of six pups of equal weight, size and sex ratio to suckle for 15 days. All pups given to all the dams were born to other mice that were not part of the study and had not been exposed to endophyte-containing diets. Dams and litter weights were measured daily for 15 consecutive days. The combined body weight measurements of litters from dams fed the tall fescue containing diets (Treatments 2 and 4) were significantly lower (2.07 +/- 0.41 g/d) than that of litters from dams fed the chow containing diets (Treatments 1 and 3) during the suckling trial (P<0.05). Similarly, nine of ten (90%) dams fed the chow containing diets maintained five or more pups (5.5 +/- 0.2) throughout the study as compared to five of nine (55.6%) dams fed the tall fescue containing diets that maintained less than five pups (4.5 +/- 0.2).  相似文献

The secretory profile of prolactin and oxytocin in response to suckling stimuli by litters was studied in unanesthetized and urethane-anesthetized lactating rats. Serum prolactin levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. Oxytocin released at milk-ejection reflex was monitored by the changes in the intramammary pressure and/or the characteristic pup's reaction associated with the milk ejection. Serum prolactin concentrations began to rise earlier than the first milk ejection in unanesthetized rats, but they were never elevated without the appearance of milk ejections in urethane-anesthetized rats. Pulsatile fluctuation in serum prolactin levels at 6-15 min intervals was observed in the nursing period when 10 pups were suckling continually. The intermittent milk-ejection reflex occurred not always but preponderantly (64-91%) when the serum prolactin levels were at the nadir of the fluctuation. Injection of an estimated dose of oxytocin released at each milk ejection (1 mU) did not change the serum prolactin levels. These results indicate that the mechanism for prolactin release may be more susceptible to the effects of anesthesia than that for oxytocin release in response to the suckling stimuli and that the release of both the hormones is pulsatile in nature and be influenced by a common biological clock during the nursing period.  相似文献

Mothers were removed from rat litters for 1 or 10 hr per day on days 3 to 9 following birth. This procedure resulted in reduced open field defaecation and increased body weight in the offspring tested at approximately 70 days, but did not affect open field ambulation, comparing with untreated control litters. Since 1- and 10-hr maternally deprived groups did not differ from one another it is not possible to attribute conclusively the effects to maternal absence per se, and the effects could be due to incidental disturbance of the pups in treated litters or to maternal reaction to the pups when the mother is replaced.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine the relationship between the behavioral and physiological changes occurring in the hamster over the course of lactation. Experimental (E) females were given litters of six 3-day-old pups on Day 13 of lactation and allowed to raise them. Control (C) females raised their own litters of six pups. Groups of E and C females were decapitated at 1000 and 1700 hr when their pups were either 8, 18, or 28 days old. Nursing was observed for 1 hr on the 3 days prior to autopsy. Nursing behavior disappeared by Day 28 in C females. E females exhibited nursing behavior at levels equal to those observed in C females until E pups were 28 days old and 38 days had elapsed since parturition. Despite the fact that E mothers continued to nurse pups on day 18 postpartum when pups were 8 days old, E pups showed lower growth rates than did C pups. Prolactin (PRL) levels remained elevated when E pups were 8 days old even though E pups did not grow normally. PRL levels decreased over time in both C and E females and reached baseline by Day 28 although nursing behavior was still elevated in E females. Thus, nursing behavior did not stimulate PRL release during late lactation. Estradiol (E2) levels in C females remained at baseline until Day 28 when levels increased. LH, FSH, and Progesterone (P) levels in C females showed a dramatic diurnal pattern which disappeared by Day 28, when levels dropped. Levels of E2, P, LH, and FSH in E females closely paralleled those of C females only when groups were compared with respect to pup age. Thus, behavioral weaning and the return to estrous cyclicity appear to be dependent upon the age of the pups rather than the time elapsed since parturition. However, milk production and PRL release appear to be more closely tied to the number of days postpartum and can be dissociated from the amount of nursing behavior observed.  相似文献

The milk/solid feed intake pattern and digestive capacity were compared in two groups of young rabbits reared between 16 and 32 days in litters of four (L4 group, n = 18 litters) or ten pups (L10, n = 20) in order to modulate milk availability. Compared to the L4 group, rabbits in the L10 group presented a lower milk intake (22.3 versus 28.8 g x day(-1)) and a higher solid feed intake (12.9 versus 8.0 g x day(-1)) between 16 and 32 days of age. Live weight and weight gain were significantly lower in the L10 (-15%) than in the L4 group from 22 until 42 days. No significant difference was observed among the two groups for post-weaning digestibility and for the intraluminal specific or total activities of amylase and maltase. The total intraluminal activity (pool of enzyme) of amylase and maltase doubled between weaning (32 days) and 42 days. At weaning, the specific activity of amylase was similar in the jejunal and ileal segments (8.5 AU x g(-1)). From 32 to 42 days, the specific amylase activity doubled in the jejunum, while it remained steady in the ileum. The intraluminal specific maltase activity did not significantly change between 32 and 42 days, while it was twice as high in the jejunum compared to the ileum (3.5 versus 1.8 micromoles hydrolysed maltose x g(-1), respectively).  相似文献

Transgenic mice expressing human non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug activated gene 1 (NAG-1) have less adipose tissue, improved insulin sensitivity, lower insulin levels and are resistant to dietary induced obesity. The hNAG-1 expressing mice are more metabolically active with a higher energy expenditure. This study investigates female reproduction in the hNAG-1 transgenic mice and finds the female mice are fertile but have reduced pup survival after birth. Examination of the mammary glands in these mice suggests that hNAG-1 expressing mice have altered mammary epithelial development during pregnancy, including reduced occupancy of the fat pad and increased apoptosis via TUNEL positive cells on lactation day 2. Pups nursing from hNAG-1 expressing dams have reduced milk spots compared to pups nursing from WT dams. When CD-1 pups were cross-fostered with hNAG-1 or WT dams; reduced milk volume was observed in pups nursing from hNAG-1 dams compared to pups nursing from WT dams in a lactation challenge study. Milk was isolated from WT and hNAG-1 dams, and the milk was found to have secreted NAG-1 protein (approximately 25 ng/mL) from hNAG-1 dams. The WT dams had no detectable hNAG-1 in the milk. A decrease in non-esterified free fatty acids in the milk of hNAG-1 dams was observed. Altered milk composition suggests that the pups were receiving inadequate nutrients during perinatal development. To examine this hypothesis serum was isolated from pups and clinical chemistry points were measured. Male and female pups nursing from hNAG-1 dams had reduced serum triglyceride concentrations. Microarray analysis revealed that genes involved in lipid metabolism are differentially expressed in hNAG-1 mammary glands. Furthermore, the expression of Cidea/CIDEA that has been shown to regulate milk lipid secretion in the mammary gland was reduced in hNAG-1 mammary glands. This study suggests that expression of hNAG-1 in mice leads to impaired lactation and reduces pup survival due to altered milk quality and quantity.  相似文献

Milk ingested by mammalian offspring, coupled with offspring's utilization of this energetic investment, influences survival and growth. A number of studies have examined milk intake in otariids, but few have examined milk intake over the entire lactation period, and none has independently measured energy expenditure concurrent with milk intake. We concurrently examined milk intake, field metabolic rate (FMR), and body composition of 41 pups over the entire lactation interval in 1995 and 1996 on St. Paul Island, Alaska. One hundred two metabolic measurements were obtained with isotope dilution methods. Mean milk intake did not differ annually but increased with age and mass, ranging from 3,400+/-239 to 6,780+/-449 (+/-SE) mL per suckling bout. Milk energy consumption did not vary with age on a mass-specific basis. No differences were detected in milk volume consumed by male and female pups, either absolutely or on a mass-specific basis. Mass-specific FMR peaked during molting, was lowest postmolt, and did not vary by sex. Pups in 1995 had lower FMR than pups in 1996 and were also fatter. Mean milk energy utilized for maintenance metabolism decreased over time from 77% to 43% in 1995 and remained at 71% in 1996. Pup body mass was negatively correlated with the percentage of total body water and positively correlated with the percentage of total body lipid (TBL). Pups increased the percentage of TBL from 16% to 37%. Northern fur seal pups increased energy intake over lactation, while concurrent changes in body composition and pelage condition resulted in mass-specific metabolic savings after the molt.  相似文献

Lactating rats and their suckling offspring were shown to have a naturally occurring resistance to Trypansoma lewisi which was greater than that seen in normal adult rats and was not dependent on previous exposure to the parasite. In the case of the pups maximum protection was dependent on suckling being the sole source of nutriment and also on the peak of the parasitemia falling within the nursing period. Supplementary solid food reduced survival rates in concurrent Hemobartonella muris—T. lewisi infections: pups infected at 10 days of age and totally dependent on nursing showed 82.5% survival but only 6.6% survival when solid food was allowed to supplement milk. However, supplementary food did not reduce survival in pups infected with only T. lewisi. When pups were totally dependent upon nursing until the normal time of weaning (21 days of age), infection with H. muris—T. lewisi at the following days of age allowed the indicated mean survival rates: 10 days (82.5%), 20 (32.5%), 30 (14.3%), and 40 (100%). Infection with T. lewisi alone at the following days of age allowed the indicated mean survival rates: 10 days (100%), 15 (76%), 17 (52%), 20 (100%), and 30 (100%). Lactating rat serum agglutinated “adult forms” of T. lewisi, which correlated well with the observed sudden resolution of parasitemia in lactating animals at the time of the antigenic transition from “juvenile” to “adult” type. The “adult” stage parasitemia in suckling pups was selectively reduced when compared to that of nonlactating adult rats. The lactating rat serum factor could be passively transferred with lactating rat serum to animals already weaned.  相似文献

Summary The breeding biology of Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) was studied at Drescher Inlet (Antarctica) during the austral late winter and spring 1986. The whelping season was estimated to last about 40 days, with a peak in pupping at late October. No post natal mortality was observed during the whole study. The attachment between parous females and their pups was strong during the first five weeks after parturition. From the third week on mothers spent more time in the water than the pups. Data on daily peak haul-out time of pups, post natal presence of pups on the ice and distribution of births during the whelping season, indicate that censuses should be carried out between 12.00 hours and 16.00 hours local time and during three weeks after the peak of the pupping season. Pups weaned between 6 and 7 weeks of age. Hormone concentrations (oestradiol-17 and progesterone) indicated that females did not come into oestrus during lactation. Throughout the whole lactation period the mother dominates the relationship with her pup. Growth of the pups was linear during the first 5 weeks post partum, during which period birth weight (x=29.1kg) increased more than 3 1/2 times. Until the 6th week of age the pups gained on average 2.6 kg/day, the respective weight loss in cows was 5.8 kg/day. The latter represents an average loss of nearly 38% of the initial weight at parturition. During the course of lactation, suckling frequency decreased, whereas the length of each bout increased resulting in an approximately constant total suckling duration per week. Of the energy used by females during the first 5 weeks, 52% was consumed by pups. Pups only took milk and the cows did not feed at all during the whole period of observation. Therefore the realized growth in pups, 10 g/min of suckling, was totally derived from energy stored by the cows.  相似文献

The response of plasma prolactin in vigorous suckling was measured in lactating rats which had been isolated for 10-12 h from their offspring. Plasma prolactin was investigated during suckling at various stages of lactation. The results demonstrate that prolactin responds maximally to suckling already in the first days of lactation. In the second half of the lactation period, the prolactin rise in the plasma induced by suckling decreases gradually; this is not due to a reduced suck-intensity of older pups. A relationship is found between the height of the suckling-induced prolactin rise and litter size. The data suggest that during suckling in the first weeks of lactation the pituitary secretes large amounts of prolactin at a constant rate. It is speculated that in the first minutes of suckling, receptors may clear considerable amounts of released prolactin from the circulation.  相似文献

This study tests the hypothesis that female house mice (F1 generation of wild caught Mus domesticus) should preferentially invest in own offspring if confronted with young of different degrees of relatedness. The maternal behaviour of females with litters of 4 own and 4 unrelated alien young (cross-fostered at day 1 of lactation) was analysed during a lactation period of 22 days both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding (food was restricted by 20%). Cross-fostering and restricted feeding had no effect on the amount of time spent nursing until weaning. Under both feeding conditions the females did not differ in their maternal behaviour towards own and alien young: there were no significant differences either in the amount of time spent nursing own versus alien pups or in the time spent licking own versus alien young. Weight gain of own and alien = wild littermates did not differ significantly in mixed litters and was similar both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding. Such indiscriminate behaviour might be adaptive if female house mice prefer to communally nest with a relative and thus improve their inclusive fitness by investing in own and related offspring in a communal nest. Under moderate restricted feeding females could not wean the entire litter but reduced litter size by cannibalizing on average 2.7 pups (75% of the pups were killed when they were 4–8 days old). Females with cross-fostered litters killed as many own as alien young. This suggests that females cannot discriminate between own and unrelated young if cross-fostering takes place at day 1 of lactation. Besides testing kin recognition abilities, the experiments also allow analysis of the weaning strategy of females under food shortage. Under restricted feeding, body weight of the females was significantly lower during middle lactation than under ad libitum feeding. Weaning weight of young in reduced litters under food restriction (9–10 g) did not differ significantly from weaning weight of young in litters of 7–10 young, but was lower than that of young in similar sized litters (litter size 6), under ad libitum feeding. The maternal behaviour of cannibalizing some young under food shortage can be interpreted as a weaning strategy which results in the largest number of offspring that can be raised to a minimal weaning weight of 9–10 g. Such a weaning strategy might represent a favourable trade-off between number and size of young produced.  相似文献

Chinning consists of rubbing the chin against an object, thereby depositing secretions from the submandibular glands. As mating, chinning is stimulated in male and female rabbits by testosterone and estradiol, respectively. To investigate the brain sites where steroids act to stimulate chinning and mating we implanted into the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) or the medial preoptic area (MPOA) of gonadectomized male and female rabbits testosterone propionate (TP; males) or estradiol benzoate (EB; females) and quantified chinning and sexual behavior. EB implants into the VMH or MPOA reliably stimulated chinning in females. Most of those implanted into the VMH and around half of the ones receiving EB into MPOA or diagonal band of Broca (DBB) showed lordosis. Chinning, but not sexual behavior, was stimulated in males by TP implants into the MPOA or DBB. Neither chinning nor mounting were reliably displayed by males following TP implants into the VMH. Results indicate that, in females, the VMH is an estrogen-sensitive brain area that stimulates both chinning and lordosis while the MPOA seems to contain subpopulations of neurons involved in either behavior. In males, androgen-sensitive neurons of the MPOA, but not the VMH, are involved in chinning stimulation but it is unclear if these areas also participate in the regulation of copulatory behavior.  相似文献

Isotope-based techniques for the measurement of water turnover, energy expenditure, and milk intake often assume that there is no recycling of isotopes once they have left the labeled animal. In experiments involving lactating females or their suckling offspring, there are several possible routes of isotope recycling. These include the consumption of labeled milk by offspring, the ingestion of labeled excreta, and the rebreathing of exhaled labeled CO(2) or water vapor by both mother and offspring. Isotope recycling might be especially important during lactation because the offspring are in close contact with each other and their mother for prolonged periods. We show here in 24- to 30-day-old domestic dog Canis familiaris puppies that there was no detectable transfer of (18)O or (2)H from labeled to unlabeled pups in two litters (16 pups, 8 labeled, 8 unlabeled) that were weaned early and independent of their mother. However, there was a significant transfer of both isotopes from labeled to unlabeled pups and from labeled pups to their mothers in nine equivalent nursing litters of the same age (27 labeled, 26 unlabeled pups). The increases in enrichment of isotopes in unlabeled offspring were greater than the increases in enrichment of the mothers. This indicates that maternal ingestion of offspring excreta and subsequent transfer of isotope in milk is not the sole pathway of recycling. Additional routes must also be important, such as exchange of isotope between pups on saliva-coated nipples and perhaps direct ingestion of excreta by unweaned young. Recycling is unlikely to be an important factor when determining maternal metabolic rate during peak lactation in domestic dogs. However, experiments that are designed to assess the energy demands of pups and isotope-based estimates of water turnover in offspring may need to take into account any effects of isotope recycling. In a theoretical example, removing the effects of recycling increased the measured energy expenditure in pups by up to 7% and increased the calculated elimination rates of both isotopes by up to 11.1% in (18)oxygen and 10.9% in (2)hydrogen.  相似文献

1. Progressive changes in the composition of milk from rats has been studied from day 0 to 20 of lactation and for 3 days following separation of the dams and pups at day 20 post partum. 2. The changes in concentration of Na, K and lactose suggested that secretion both prepartum and following weaning occurred by a paracellular mechanism whereas a transcellular pathway existed during established lactation. 3. The concentration of total protein and casein increased gradually throughout lactation. In contrast, the concentration of serum albumin increased and transferrin decreased markedly during early lactation. The fat content of milk declined 3-fold within 5 days of birth but the concentration of Ca, Mg and inorganic P increased. The concentration of each of these milk constituents remained constant during established lactation. 4. Following weaning the pronounced decline in lactose, K and inorganic P was negatively correlated with an increase in all other milk constituents except fat. 5. Rats fed a low energy diet produced milk with a lower fat content but with an unaltered concentration of protein and carbohydrate. The growth rate of these litters was similar for the first 5 days of lactation when compared to litters from dams fed a high energy diet. The growth rate of litters thereafter and following weaning was greater for rats fed a high energy diet.  相似文献

In the pregnant domestic rabbit, scent marking (“chinning”) and sexual behavior are inhibited by ovarian-derived progesterone (P). In order to distinguish behavioral effects of P that are PR-dependent from those mediated by its ring A reduced metabolites, we administered P, P+RU486 (PR antagonist), chlormadinone acetate (CA, synthetic progestin that does not form ring A reduced metabolites), or vehicle to ovariectomized (ovx) estradiol-benzoate (EB)-treated female rabbits, via sc injection, on experimental day 0. Chinning was quantified daily, and mating tests were done on days -1, 1, 3, 5, and 7. On day 1, chinning was significantly decreased, and the latency to be mounted by the male was significantly increased (indicating decreased sexual attractivity of the female) in P-treated females. The effect of P on chinning, but not its effect on sexual attractivity, was completely blocked by RU486 and replicated by CA. Although CA had no effect on attractivity on day 1, it decreased both sexual receptivity and attractivity on day 3. In a preference test in which the male could interact with either an ovx EB-treated female or an ovx female that had received one of the above hormone treatments 24 h earlier, P decreased sexual attractivity and increased aggression. The effect of P on aggression, but not its effect on attractivity, was blocked by RU486 and replicated by CA. These results indicate that both PR-dependent and PR-independent mechanisms decrease sexual attractivity, whereas PR activation is necessary for the inhibition of chinning and sexual receptivity, and for the stimulation of aggression.  相似文献

Significant variation exists for maternal nurturing ability in inbred mice. Although classical mapping approaches have identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) that may account for this variation, the underlying genes are unknown. In this study, lactation performance data among the mouse diversity panel were used to map genomic regions associated with this variation. Females from each of 32 inbred strains (n = 8-19 dams/strain) were studied during the first 8 days of lactation by allowing them to raise weight- and size-normalized cross-foster litters (10 pups/litter). Average daily weight gain (ADG) of litters served as the primary indicator of milk production. The number of pups successfully reared to 8 days (PNUM8) also served as a related indicator of maternal performance. Initial haplotype association analysis using a Bonferroni-corrected, genome-wide threshold revealed 10 and 15 associations encompassing 11 and 13 genes for ADG and PNUM8, respectively. The most significant of these associated haplotype blocks were found on MMU 8, 11, and 19 and contained the genes Nr3c2, Egfr, Sec61g, and Gnaq. Lastly, two haplotype blocks on MMU9 were detected in association with PNUM8. These overlapped with the previously described maternal performance QTL, Neogq1. These results suggest that the application of in silico QTL mapping is a useful tool in discovering the presence of novel candidate genes involved in determining lactation capacity in mice.  相似文献
