Seasonal and vertical distribution of tintinnids, non-loricate ciliates and micrometazoa were studied in Kaštela Bay (central Adriatic Sea) throughout 1995. The species composition of tintinnids and copepods were studied as well. This is the first estimation of non-loricate ciliate biomass in the coastal area of the central Adriatic. Non-loricate ciliates were quantitatively the best represented ciliated protozoa, whereas nauplii were the most numerous micrometazoan organisms. Temperature affected the distribution of most micrometazoan components of the zooplankton and that of non-loricate ciliates. The temperature-dependent presence of individual size categories of non-loricate ciliates was also established. Apart from the interaction between microzooplankton groups, the influence of biotic factors, such as phytoplankton, bacteria, non-pigmented nanoflagellates (NNF) and mesozooplankton, was also discussed. The abundance of ciliates was controlled by both food supply (phytoplankton and NNF) and micrometazoan grazing. The results point to very complex trophic relationships within the planktonic community, suggesting that microzooplankton could be an important link between the microbial food web and higher trophic levels. We studied the effect of short-term hypoxia on predation by the non-native rapa whelk (Rapana venosa) on the three most common bivalve prey in northern Adriatic lagoons: the non-native ark shell (Scapharca inaequivalvis) and Manila clam (Tapes philippinarum), and the native cockle Cerastoderma glaucum. In mesocosm experiments, bivalves were offered to predator as single prey, and as multiple choice of prey. Bivalve prey showed behavioral responses when exposed to short-term hypoxia. Under normoxia, prey were consumed in almost equal numbers when offered separately, but when choice was offered to the predator R. venosa showed a marked preference for S. inaequivalvis. Short-term hypoxia increased the vulnerability of T. philippinarum, and, consequently, rapa whelks modified their predatory behavior and switched their preference to T. philippinarum. We hypothesize this to be a case of environmentally-mediated, non-reciprocal indirect interaction between the two non-native prey species, whose causes are based upon differences in specific traits of prey. Hypoxia may facilitate the coexistence of the two non-native bivalves via predator switching. The native cockle seems the net loser of the game.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial patterns of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) were studied monthly from January 1997 to December 1998 in the middle Adriatic Sea. Bacterial and HNF relationships with phytoplankton biomass and temperature were analyzed to examine how the relative importance of bottom-up and top-down factors may shift over seasons and locations. For the coastal area, an inconsistent relationship between bacterial abundance and chlorophyll a and a stronger relationship between bacterial abundance and bacterial production suggest that other substrates than those of phytoplankton origin are important for bacteria. The analysis of simultaneous effects of temperature and bacterial production on bacterial abundance showed that the effect of temperature obscured the effects of bacterial production, suggesting that bacterial growth itself is highly temperature-dependent. The relationship between HNF abundance and bacterial abundance was slightly improved by the inclusion of in situ temperature, bacterial production or both parameters, as additional independent variables. About 60% of the variability in HNF abundance can be explained by bacterial abundance, bacterial production and temperature. In the open sea, tight coupling of bacterial abundance with chlorophyll a concentrations implied that phytoplankton-derived substrates have a dominant role in controlling bacterial abundance. During the colder months, bacterial abundance was high enough to support higher HNF abundance than observed, suggesting that predation exerted a minor depressing influence on bacterial abundance during that period. This study reports the development of a tool to characterise and differentiate northern Adriatic waters, particularly oligotrophic, high-salinity waters, based on the cellular fatty acids of culturable heterotrophic bacterioplankton. The growth abilities and population dominance were observed for particle-attached and free-living bacteria cultured in three types of media: Marine Broth, diluted Marine Broth (1:10) and R2 broth. Three groups of water layers were distinguished by hierarchical clustering analysis: eutrophic, oligotrophic and oligotrophic nutrient-selected. Significant differences between the resulting groups were tested by two-way ANOVA (with replication). Eutrophic layers were characterised by readily culturable particle-attached and free-living fractions of the bacterial community in all three media, all dominated by fast-growing γ-Proteobacteria. In contrast, oligotrophic water layers with low productivity had a much weaker culturability and a different population dominance for the free-living community, as compared to their attached or growth-arrested counterparts, for all media. The free-living bacteria from strictly oligotrophic environments demonstrated minimum culturability in Marine Broth, while those from selective oligotrophic environments were culturable and were dominated either by CytophagaFlavobacter complex, α-Proteobacteria or γ-Proteobacteria. The conclusive evidence regarding the selective and refractory nature of organic compounds in these waters demonstrates the dominant culturability of the CytophagaFlavobacter complex and α-Proteobacteria in free-living communities in all growth-media. The response of fatty acid dominance ratios depends significantly on the trophic state and fraction (p < 0.05), although the effect of the trophic state is completely different in attached and free fractions. Both fractions were tested separately, demonstrating a significant influence of the trophic state (p < 0.05), while the effect of the media on the fatty acid response was not significant (p > 0.05). An interaction between media and trophic status was present in the attached fraction (p < 0.05), yet this was not observed in the free fraction (p > 0.05), indicating that any systematic difference between trophic states was the same for each media tested. Accordingly, the free-living fraction of bacterioplankton is a more informative attribute and can be used solely as an indicator of the water layer trophic condition.  相似文献

Some preliminary results of a survey carried out along the Southern Adriatic coasts (Brindisi-S.M. Leuca) are reported in order to contribute to the knowledge of the phytoplankon community of this area. 用1959年全国海洋普查中网浮游动物标本,分析渤海水母类,枝角类,糠虾,毛虾和幼虫类的数量分布和季节变化,结果表明,水母类以近岸低盐种为主,主要出现在莱州湾,渤海湾和辽东湾近岸水域,冬季出现的种类较少,优势种为八斑芮氏水母;夏季种类较多,优势种为半球杯水母和嵊山多胃水母等,鸟喙尖头蚤为近岸高温低盐种,主要出现在莱州湾,数量在6月份达到最大值,箭虫是海主要肉食性种类之一,其数量高峰期出现在9月份,长住囊虫的季节变化呈双峰型变化,第1次数量高峰出现在5月份,第2次数量高峰出现在8月份。该种大部分时间主要分布在莱州湾,渤海湾和辽东湾近岸水域,渤海出现的糠虾有长额刺糠虾和漂浮囊糠虾,其中长额否则糠虾受温度的影响较小,在春,夏秋,各有一个数量高峰;漂浮囊糠虾在秋末数量明显增加,这两种糠虾主要分布在渤海湾和辽东湾近岸水域。/三叶针尾涟虫属于低温种类,主要出现在秋季和冬季,细长脚绒属夏季高温种,在6,7月份数量较高,该种的分布受盐度影响比较大,主要出现在受黄海海流影响的谪盐水域,数量较大的幼虫有桡足类的六肢幼体,多毛类海稚虫科的幼体,以壳类幼体和腹足类幼体,其中桡足类六肢幼体和海稚虫科的幼体在5月份出现较多,腹足类幼体在6.7月份数量较高,双壳类幼体在8月份数量较高。  相似文献

三趾跳鼠的代谢率存在季节性变化 ,春季的静止代谢率最低 (0 75mlO2 /h .g) ,仅为期望值的 6 4% ,热中性区最窄 (2 9~ 31℃ ) ;夏季的代谢率 (1 17mlO2 /h .g)与期望值一致 ,热中性区最宽 (2 8~ 37℃ ) ;秋季的代谢率 (1 31mlO2 /h .g)高于期望值 10 % ,热中性区向低温偏移 (2 6~ 30℃ )。三趾跳鼠各季节的体温从春季到秋季逐渐降低 ,并且在环境温度为 30℃以下时基本维持恒定 ,高温时动物以耐受一定程度的高体温和分泌唾液防止致死性过热。三趾跳鼠的能量代谢特征不仅与季节性食物和环境温度变化有关 ,而且与该鼠种的冬眠特性也有一定联系  相似文献

Abstract

Data on the horizontal and vertical distribution of diatom species, collected between April 1995 and March 1996 in coastal waters of the Apulian Adriatic Sea are presented. A total number of 120 species belonging to 51 genera were identified. Diatoms were dominant in the major part of the examined samples, constituting up to 90% of the total cell numbers during the spring period.  相似文献

Seasonal variation, horizontal and vertical distribution, and cell size of nanoflagellates, together with physico-chemical and biological factors, were studied in the northern South China Sea (SCS). It was found that nanoflagellate abundance ranged from 0.157 × 103 to 9.193 × 103 cells/ml (with a mean of 0.891 × 103) in winter (February, 2004), while it ranged from 0.107 × 103 to 5.417 × 103 cells/ml (with a mean of 0.599 × 103) in summer (July, 2004). Nanoflagellates were more abundant in winter than summer in offshore regions, showing an unique seasonal pattern in this subtropical marginal sea. The abundance of nanoflagellates decreased from the estuary to the offshore region. Vertical distribution of nanoflagellates coupled well with that of bacteria and Chl a. The small size fraction of less than 5 μm dominated the nanoflagellate populations. Wind-driven mixing, eddies, availability of nutrients as well as Chl a and abundance of picoplankton seemed to be the major controlling factors for the spatial distribution and seasonal variation of nanoflagellates in the study area. The results of a floristic study of benthic marine macroalgae on rocky substrata from the Tremiti Islands (Adriatic Sea) are presented. The list of taxa at specific and infraspecific level consists of 226 Rhodophyceae, 59 Fucophyceae and 36 Chlorophyceae. Of these 321 taxa, 147 are newly reported from the Tremiti Islands. Data on the reproductive phenology of each species, and comments on some species of particular interest are also given.  相似文献

Seasonal dormancy is a widespread mechanism for reducing energy expenditure during periods of low energy availability. Seasonal variation in activity and the cost of pumping water through the siphons were investigated to estimate the importance of activity regulation to the seasonal energy budget of the Antarctic clam, Laternula elliptica. In the laboratory, a metabolic rate of 26.35 μmol O2 h−1 was estimated for a 50-mm shell length L. elliptica pumping water at −0.4 °C. In the field, the proportion of time siphons were visible at the sediment surface varied seasonally (32% visible in June/July compared to 86% in December/January). L. elliptica were actively pumping for a minimum of 19% of each 24-h period during winter (August) compared to a summer maximum when animals were actively pumping for 73% of the time (February). This resulted in a 3.7-fold seasonal difference in the calculated energy consumption of a 50-mm L. elliptica (19.2 μmol O2 h−1 in February versus 5.0 μmol O2 h−1 in August), which closely matches the 3.0-fold seasonal variation in metabolic rate found previously. Seasonal variation in activity could therefore be responsible for much of the seasonal difference in energy consumption of L. elliptica. Inter-annual variation in timing of the seasonal activity maxima (January 2004 and March 1999) was correlated with variation in the timing of the summer plankton bloom in Ryder Bay. In the laboratory, periods of extended siphon closure (133 ± 114 min, mean ± SD) were accompanied by long periods of heart arrhythmia (167 ± 135 min), during which time blood oxygen levels dropped to values close to zero. Heart arrhythmia is most likely part of a hypo-metabolic adaptation to reduce energy costs during extended periods of siphon closure. Physiological and behavioural dormancy, with associated hypoxia tolerance, appear to be key mechanisms controlling the seasonal energy budget of L. elliptica.  相似文献

Phytoplankton community diversity indices are used to characterize the effects of eutrophication in the Northern Adriatic Sea. A derived Shannon diversity frequency spectrum provided a single biological quantification which allowed an interpretation of temporal and regional differences and which can also be used to evaluate future changes in species diversity. Research carried out over the last 40 years has underlined the scientific importance of the rocky outcrops scattered on the Northern Adriatic Sea bed sometimes referred to as “tegnúe”. The zoobenthic biocenoses developing over these peculiar geological formations are as extraordinary as they are unique. A study carried out for an entire year in two sampling stations, at different distances from the coast, revealed a very high number of zoobenthic species, including those which have now become rare and are therefore protected in Italian seas. The water turbidity of the northern Adriatic Sea greatly reduces the quantity of light reaching these outcrops, limiting the activity of autotrophic organisms only to sciaphilous genera. Thus, the most represented trophic categories of zoobenthos are suspension, especially filter feeders. Biodiversity values calculated for the communities of these particular reefs are far higher than normally found in the soft seabed in nearby areas, but even higher than in other coralligenous outcrops in other marine ecosystem in the world. The ecological role played by the tegnúe in the Northern Adriatic is extraordinary because as well as being true oases of biodiversity, they are areas naturally protected against bottom trawl-fishing. Thus, they offer shelter and reproduction sites for a number of fish and invertebrate species, including some under stress due to severe fishing pressure.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial variability of micro and mesozooplankton was studied in 1998 and 1999 at four stations in the Neretva Channel area influenced by the Neretva river and the open waters of the south Adriatic Sea. The area is orthophosphate limited, but an excessive accumulation of land derived nitrogen is prevented by phytoplankton uptake and the general circulation pattern. Microzooplankton was dominated by ciliates, with average abundances comparable to other Adriatic channel areas (122–543 ind. l−1). Non-loricate ciliates (NLC) generally peaked in the warmer periods, but a winter increase was evident towards the inner part of the channel. Tintinnid abundances generally increased in autumn. A significant relationship with temperature was not recorded for either protozoan group. An inverse relationship between NLC and salinity might be indirectly caused by their preference for the food abundant surface layer. Mesozooplankton was dominated by copepods, with distinct summer maxima throughout the area and pronounced winter maxima of >10,000 ind. m−3 at the inner stations. The community was predominantly neritic but the open sea waters were important in structuring the mesozooplankton assemblage at all stations during the autumn–winter period. Although temperature regulated the seasonal dynamics of most metazoans and the species succession in the copepod community, small omnivorous copepods (Oncaea media complex, Oithona nana and Euterpina acutifrons) dominated regardless of the season. A trophic link between copepods and ciliates was evident in winter during low phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Pseudo-nitzschia in relation to environmental factors was investigated from March 2002 to July 2008 in Lim Bay, in the north-eastern Adriatic Sea. Domoic acid was monitored in the breeding population of Mytilus galloprovincialis from 2005 to 2008. The principal-component analysis of environmental parameters showed that the system is mostly temperature driven. The phytoplankton community was mainly composed of diatoms. Pseudo-nitzschia was the dominant diatom, present in 60% of samples, with a maximum (1.6 × 106 cells L−1) contribution up to 97% of the total diatom abundance. Morphological analysis revealed Pseudo-nitzschia manii and potentially toxic Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Pseudo-nitzschia fraudulenta and Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha as the dominant species in blooms. Pseudo-nitzschia abundance positively correlated to temperature, phosphate and ammonia in accordance with its maximal abundance in the summer/autumn period when fish farms had a maximum impact on the environment. Domoic acid was detected in M. galloprovincialis in concentrations below regulatory limits, ranging from 0.097 to 0.8721 μg g−1 in five cases from April to October 2005 in Lim Bay, but so far it is not clear which of the species was responsible for DA production. This study is also the first record of P. manii, P pungens and P. fraudulenta species in the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献
