By using time-depth recorders to measure diving activity and the doubly-labelled water method to determine energy expenditure, the relationship between foraging behaviour and energy expenditure was investigated in nine Antarctic fur seal females rearing pups. At-sea metabolic rate (MR) (mean of 6.34 ± 0.4 W. kg-1; 4.6 times predicted BMR) was positively correlated to foraging trip duration (mean of 4.21 ± 0.54 days; r2= 0.5, P < 0.04). There were no relationships between MR and the total number of dives, the total time spent diving or the total vertical distance travelled during the foraging trip. There was, however, a close negative sigmoidal relationship (r2= 0.93) between at-sea MR and the proportion of time at sea spent diving. This measure of diving behaviour may provide a useful, inexpensive means of estimating foraging energy expenditure in this species and possibly in other otariids. The rate of diving (m.h-1) was also negatively related to at-sea MR (r2= 0.69, P < 0.005). Body mass gain during a foraging trip had a positive relationship to the time spent at sea (r2= 0.58, P < 0.02) and the total amount of energy expended while at sea (r2= 0.72, P < 0.004) such that, while females undertaking long trips have higher metabolic rates, the energetic efficiency with which females gain mass is independent of the time spent at sea. Therefore, within the range of conditions observed, there is no apparent energetic advantage for females in undertaking foraging trips of any particular duration.  相似文献

This study investigated how female Antarctic fur seals adapt their foraging behavior, over time scales of days, to spatial unpredictability in the distribution of their food. Lactating Antarctic fur seals are central-place foragers that feed on highly patchy but spatially and temporally dynamic food. We measured the foraging distribution of 28 fur seals to test whether variation in foraging trip durations was reflected in variation in the location of foraging and the diving behavior of seals at sea. Based on the maximum distance travelled from the breeding beach, three categories of foraging trips were denned: those to the continental shelf area ( n = 12, median = 71 km), to oceanic water ( n = 11, median =164 km), and to farther offshore oceanic waters ( n = 5, median = 260 km). Trip duration and mean surface speed were positively correlated with the maximum distance travelled from the breeding beach. Seals on longer trips spent proportionally less of their time submerged, but there was no significant difference in the total number of dives or the total time spent foraging by seals in relation to trip duration. Evidence from this study and previous work investigating energy gain suggests that an animal on a longer foraging trip could potentially have a higher mean energy return per dive than a similar animal on a shorter foraging trip. Evidence presented suggests that the type of foraging trip (near or far) is not predetermined by the animal but may be a simple response to the stochastic distribution of the resources available.  相似文献

Adult Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) were immobilized with Zoletil® ( n = 172), ketamine ( n = 30), ketamine mixed with diazepam ( n = 23) and with ketamine mixed with xylazine ( n = 45). Response to all drugs was highly variable. There was a relationship between dose rate and level of immobilization in females given Zoletil®. Males were slightly more sensitive to Zoletil® than females but this could have been due to the greater body mass and lower mass-specific metabolic rate of males. The dose required to achieve a level of immobilization declined with greater body mass for Zoletil® and ketamine but not for ketamine-diatepam. Ketamine and ketamine-sedative mixtures commonly caused mild tremoring and occasionally caused convulsions. Neither reaction was seen with Zoletil®. Mean doses were, Zoletil® 1.5 mg/ kg, ketamine 6.9 mg/kg, ketamine-diazepam 6.3 mg/kg ketamine and 6.3 μg/kg diazepam, and ketamine-xylazine 7.3 mg/kg ketamine and 0.62 mg/ kg xylazine. Zoletil® performs at least as well on Antarctic fur seals as ketamine but it may cause respiratory depression. The dose of ketamine required for Antarctic fur seals was greater than for most other species of seals.  相似文献

This study examined three competing hypotheses to explain howlactating Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) respondto changes in the level of resource availability. Antarcticfur seals have episodic bouts of suckling (1-3 days), alternatingwith foraging trips (3-10 days). Foraging time budgets variedsignificantly (p <.001) among 8 consecutive years at BirdIsland, South Georgia. Foraging trip duration increased during periodsof relative food shortage. Time spent ashore was more consistentamong years than foraging trip duration but declined duringa year of particularly low food availability. In 4 of the 8years, there was a significant positive correlation betweentime spent ashore and foraging trip duration. In the other years, the relationship was close to statistical significance. Energydelivery to pups during suckling bouts followed an asymptoticpower function. Energy gain during foraging trips was estimatedfrom diving behavior, which suggested that the energy gain functionwas linear. Distance traveled during foraging trips was correlatedwith foraging trip duration, and long foraging trips were associatedwith reduced foraging intensity. There was support for the hypothesisthat lactating Antarctic fur seals compensate for reduced resources byincreasing the foraging trip duration rather than working harderand increasing their energy expenditure. However, there wasmost support for the hypothesis that lactating Antarctic furseals adjust time spent ashore as well as foraging trip duration, possibly to maximize the delivery of food to their offspring.Lactation appears to impose constraints on provisioning of offspringthat differ from those of seabirds foraging in the same environment andoften on the same prey.  相似文献

Milk composition was investigated throughout the 10-mo pup-rearing period in subantarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) breeding on Amsterdam Island. The mean milk composition was 42.8% +/- 5.7% lipid, 12.1% +/- 1.5% protein, and 42.6% +/- 7.3% water. Subantarctic fur seals breeding on Amsterdam Island produced one of the richest milks ever reported in otariids (20.4 +/- 2.9 kJ/g), with lipid content contributing 85% of total gross energy. The high lipid levels measured in the milk of subantarctic fur seals breeding on Amsterdam Island is consistent (i) with the relatively long time lactating females spend at sea, due to the relatively poor local trophic conditions near the colony that necessitate that they travel long distances to reach the foraging grounds, and (ii) with the consequently short time mothers spend with their pups ashore. Milk composition changed according to the time mothers were fasting ashore: milk produced during the first 2 d spent ashore, when more than 80% of milk transfer occurred, had higher levels of lipids, proteins, and gross energy than milk produced later during the visit ashore, suggesting that the pups were fed with two types of milk during a suckling period. Throughout the year, mothers in good condition produced milk of higher lipid content than others, suggesting that individual foraging skills contribute to enhance milk quality. Milk lipid and gross energy content varied with pup age, according to quadratic relationships, increasing during the earlier stages of lactation before reaching asymptotic values when pups were 180 d old. The stage of lactation appears to be a better predictor of milk lipid content than the duration of the preceding foraging trip, suggesting that either changes in the nutritional requirements of the pup and/or seasonal changes in trophic conditions act on milk composition. These changes in milk quality may also be related to changes in maternal care; lactating subantarctic fur seals apparently reallocate their body reserves toward gestation rather than lactation at the end of the pup-rearing period.  相似文献

The energetics of an egg-laying mammal, the echidna ( Tachyglossus aculeatus ), were studied in the wild by means of isotope turnover techniques. Water and sodium influx rates were highest in summer (47.7±15.3 ml kg-1 day-1 and 1.20±0.52 mmol kg-1 day-1, respectively) and associated with high metabolic rates (0.509±0.048 ml CO2 g-1 h-1). Water and sodium influxes and metabolic rates were lowest in May and June (7.8±6.4 ml H2O kg-1 day-1, 0.21±0.12 mmol Na kg-1 day-1 and 0.205±0.129 ml CO2 g-1 h-1, respectively). These low rates in late autumn/early winter are associated with reduced activity, the animals spending substantial periods of time in torpor. The comparatively low isotope turnover rates of echidnas are a consequence of their diet; ants and termites which have low mass-specific energy contents.  相似文献

Effect of temperature on swimming performance of sea bass juveniles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
At four temperatures ( T= 15, 20, 25 and 28° C) swimming performance of Dicentrarchus labrax was significantly correlated with total length (23–43 mm L T); r2=0.623–0.829). The relative critical swimming speed ( RU crit= U crit L T−1), where U crit is the critical swimming speed, was constant throughout the L T range studied. The significant effect of temperature on the relative critical swimming speed was described binomially: RU crit=−0.0323T2+ 1.578 T −10.588 (r2=1). The estimated maximum RU crit (8.69 L T s−1) was achieved at 24.4° C, and the 90% performance level was estimated between 19.3 and 29.6° C.  相似文献

Previous studies of fur seals suggest that the attendance patterns and consequent temporal patterning of energy transfer from mother to pup follows a latitudinal cline. While data from subpolar, tropical, and some temperate latitude species support the postulated cline, data for the temperate latitude Juan Fernández fur seal do not. Maternal foraging trips and associated visits ashore were the longest of all otariids studied to date. The first foraging trip postpartum averaged 10.2 d ( n = 51 females, range 1–22.5), foraging trips combined averaged 12.3 d ( n = 100, range 1.0-25.0), and visits ashore averaged 5.3 d ( n = 91, range 0.3-15.8) over the three seasons of study. Only duration of lactation was intermediate between subpolar and tropical strategies as predicted. Dive records suggest that these females feed almost exclusively at night at depths of less than 10 m and at distances of more than 500 km offshore. The prey species of this fur seal, primarily myctophids and squid, migrate to the surface at night and are patchily distributed. Foraging trip length varied between years in conjunction with shifts in seasurface temperature and type of prey consumed. We suggest that distribution of prey, irrespective of latitude, dictates foraging patterns of fur seals and leads to the exceptionally long foraging trips and visits ashore observed in this species.  相似文献

Predictable sources of food underpin lifetime reproductive output in long lived animals. The most important foraging areas of top marine predators are therefore likely to be related to environmental features that enhance productivity in predictable spatial and temporal patterns. Even so, although productive areas within the marine environment are distributed patchily in space and time, most studies assess the relationships between feeding activity and proximate, not long term, environmental characteristics. In addition, individuals within a population may exploit different prey types, and these are often associated with different hydrographic features. Until now, models attempting to associate core foraging areas (CFAs) of marine predators with the environmental characteristics of those areas have not considered the diet of individual animals, despite the influence this could have on these relationships. We used bathymetry and multi‐year (n=24) mean sea surface temperature and variability as predictors of CFAs of lactating Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella at Heard Island. The effect of prey types on the predictability of these models was explored by matching diet and foraging trip data of individual seals (n=40 seals, n=1 trip each). Differences in diet between seals were mirrored by their spatial behaviour. Foraging strategies differed both between and within groups of seals consuming different diets. Long‐term environmental parameters were useful for predicting the foraging activity of seals that consumed a single prey type with relatively specific habitat preferences, but not for those that consumed single or multiple prey types associated with more varied habitats. Ignoring individual variation in predator diet probably contributes to the poor performance of foraging habitat models. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating individual specialization in foraging behaviour into ecological models and management of predator populations.  相似文献

Flow cytometry was used to estimate the proportions of different blood cell types in brown and rainbow trout. On the basis of forward light scatter and 90° side scatter three populations were differentiated. The relative abundance of these cells correlated with that of erythrocytc (r2= 0.994), lymphocyte plus thrombocyte(r2= 0.676) and neutrophil populations (r2= 0.571) enumerated by direct microscopy. By density gradient separation of cells, cell sorting and acridine orange staining it was confirmed that these cell types could be assigned to the populations detected. Changes in blood cell populations were monitored by flow cytometry in a group of experimental fish placed under confinement stress. Flow cytometry proved to be a rapid and reliable method for monitoring cell population dynamics in fish blood.  相似文献

The timing, location and duration of territorial tenure, and the mating success and return rates of male Antarctic fur seals ( Arctocephalus gazella ) were measured over four consecutive breeding seasons (1984–87) on Bird Island (54°00'S, 38°02'W), South Georgia. Tenure duration (days) followed a heavily skewed, Poisson-like distribution (median 13.08 days, maximum 75 days) and was positively related to the number of years of tenure (rs= 0.52, P < 0.0001). Mating success was also biased to a few individuals and was positively correlated to both duration of tenure (days) and the previous number of years in which tenure was achieved ( P < 0.0001 in both cases). The timing and location of territorial tenure had no measurable effect on mating success ( P > 0.05 in both cases). The probability of a male returning to hold a territory in the next year was not related to the number of years tenure that had been achieved ( P > 0.7) or to the level of mating success in the current year ( P > 0.15). It was, however, positively related to the duration of tenure in the current year ( P < 0.0001). The overall annual return rate was 43% which is not significantly different from the survival rate for the general male population and suggests that territorial tenure does not contribute to increased mortality in male Antarctic fur seals.  相似文献

We investigated the variation of Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) pup growth rates in response to sex, breeding season and duration of both maternal foraging trip and attendance bouts. Data were collected during five consecutive rearing seasons at Cape Shirreff, the most important breeding colony in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. Our results showed significant interannual and sexual variations in pup growth rates. Male pups grew significantly faster than female pups during 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004 seasons, whilst during 2003 no difference was found. The interannual variation in pup growth rates was correlated with the interannual fluctuation in maternal foraging trip and attendance bouts. There was a significant effect of pup sex and maternal foraging trip duration on pup growth rates, which varied between years having foraging trip duration a major effect during 2003, when females spent more time at sea and interestingly on that year there were no sexual differences in pup growth rates. The effect of attendance bout on pup growth rates was not significant. Diet analysis showed that Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) was the most frequent prey item during the study period. Analysis of krill size distribution showed a significant difference in krill length, during 2003, when A. gazella preyed upon the smallest sizes of krill. In this study, sex was the most important factor on pup growth rates, but when prey availability seemed more limited, there are longer foraging trips and shorter attendance bouts the sex factor became less significant.  相似文献

Time and energy are the two most important currencies in animal bioenergetics. How much time animals spend engaged in different activities with specific energetic costs ultimately defines their likelihood of surviving and successfully reproducing. However, it is extremely difficult to determine the energetic costs of independent activities for free‐ranging animals. In this study, we developed a new method to calculate activity‐specific metabolic rates, and applied it to female fur seals. We attached biologgers (that recorded GPS locations, depth profiles, and triaxial acceleration) to 12 northern (Callorhinus ursinus) and 13 Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella), and used a hierarchical decision tree algorithm to determine time allocation between diving, transiting, resting, and performing slow movements at the surface (grooming, etc.). We concomitantly measured the total energy expenditure using the doubly‐labelled water method. We used a general least‐square model to establish the relationship between time–activity budgets and the total energy spent by each individual during their foraging trip to predict activity‐specific metabolic rates. Results show that both species allocated similar time to diving (~29%), transiting to and from their foraging grounds (~26–30%), and resting (~8–11%). However, Antarctic fur seals spent significantly more time grooming and moving slowly at the surface than northern fur seals (36% vs. 29%). Diving was the most expensive activity (~30 MJ/day if done non‐stop for 24 hr), followed by transiting at the surface (~21 MJ/day). Interestingly, metabolic rates were similar between species while on land or while slowly moving at the surface (~13 MJ/day). Overall, the average field metabolic rate was ~20 MJ/day (for all activities combined). The method we developed to calculate activity‐specific metabolic rates can be applied to terrestrial and marine species to determine the energetic costs of daily activities, as well as to predict the energetic consequences for animals forced to change their time allocations in response to environmental shifts.  相似文献

Individual haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus (L.) were maintained at different feeding levels in an aquarium from November until the completion of spawning. The mean duration of spawning was 33.2 days (range 19–59) during which an average of 16.6 (range 10–25) batches of eggs were produced. The size and dry weight of the eggs declined during the spawning period. Egg production and feeding level were correlated positively. There was some suggestion that when female haddock received low rations (< 5 kcal day-1) a lower proportion spawned, and the dry weights of the eggs were lower compared with females on high rations (> 13 kcal day -1). The relation between daily growth in wet weight, g, and daily surplus energy intake, kcal, was: G =(0.295 E )— 0.328. When food energy is restricted, haddock appear to achieve a balance between somatic growth and reproduction.  相似文献

Summary Relationships between size, body condition, age and feeding-attendance patterns during pup rearing of female Antacrtic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella and their effects on the timing of birth and weaning, pup weight, growth and condition were studied at South Georgia in 1981–1982. Twenty-seven (6 male, 21 female) mother-pup pairs were followed from birth to weaning. The analysis of maternal effects was limited to female pups because of the small sample size of male weaners. High weaning weight was associated with those female pups whose mothers spent more time ashore attending their offspring. Weaning weight showed no relationship with perinatal duration, number of feeding trips to sea, days at sea or date of weaning. A further 63 mother-pup pairs were analysed for the effects of maternal body condition (weight/length), age and timing of birth on offspring body weight and condition. Pup weight and condition were weakly correlated with maternal age in female pups. Male pups born earlier in the season were heavier and in better condition. Maternal and offspring body weight and condition were unrelated. For the Antarctic fur seal population at South Georgia where the food supply was apparently not limiting in summer, maternal condition and foraging time were subordinate to maternal care on land (as expressed by attendance duration) in determining offspring weight at weaning.  相似文献

Information on health parameters, such as antibody prevalences and serum chemistry that can reveal exposure to pathogens, disease, and abnormal physiologic conditions, is scarce for Antarctic seal species. Serum samples from Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella, n=88) from Bouvet?ya (2000-2001 and 2001-2002), and from Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii, n=20), Ross seals (Ommatophoca rossii, n=20), and crabeater seals (Lobodon carcinophagus, n=9) from the pack-ice off Queen Maud Land, Antarctica (2001) were analyzed for enzyme activity, and concentrations of protein, metabolites, minerals, and cortisol. Adult Antarctic fur seal males had elevated levels of total protein (range 64-99 g/l) compared to adult females and pups (range 52-79 g/l). Antarctic fur seals had higher enzyme activities of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and amylase, compared to Weddell, Ross, and crabeater seals. Antibodies against Brucella spp. were detected in Weddell seals (37%), Ross seals (5%), and crabeater seals (11%), but not in Antarctic fur seals. Antibodies against phocine herpesvirus 1 were detected in all species examined (Antarctic fur seals, 58%; Weddell seals, 100%; Ross seals, 15%; and crabeater seals, 44%). No antibodies against Trichinella spp., Toxoplasma, or phocine distemper virus (PDV) were detected (Antarctic fur seals were not tested for PDV antibodies). Antarctic seals are challenged by reduced sea ice and increasing temperatures due to climate change, and increased anthropogenic activity can introduce new pathogens to these vulnerable ecosystems and represent a threat for these animals. Our data provide a baseline for future monitoring of health parameters of these Antarctic seal species, for tracking the impact of environmental, climatic, and anthropogenic changes in Antarctica over time.  相似文献

Changes in carbon metabolism and δ13C value of transgenic potato plants with a maize pyruvate, orthophosphate dikinase (PPDK; EC 2.7.9.1) gene are reported. PPDK catalyzes the formation of phospho enol pyruvate (PEP), the initial acceptor of CO2 in the C4 photosynthetic pathway. PPDK activities in the leases of transgenic potatoes were up to 5.4‐fold higher than those of control potato plants (wild‐type and treated control plants). In the transgenic potato plants, PPDK activity in leaves was negatively correlated with pyruvate content (r2= 0.81), and was positively correlated with malate content (r2= 0.88). A significant increase in the δ13C value was observed in the transgenic potato plants, suggesting a certain contribution of PEP carboxylase as the initial acceptor of atmospheric CO2. These data suggest that elevated PPDK activity may alter carbon metabolism and lead to a partial operation of C4‐type carbon metabolism. However, since parameters associated with CO2 gas exchange were not affected, the altered carbon metabolism had only a small effect on the total photosynthetic characteristics of the transgenic plants.  相似文献

The social organization and behaviour of 35 individually recognizable territorial male Antarctic Fur seals ( Arctocephalus guzellu ), were studied during the breeding season at South Georgia. Adults of both sexes remain at sea throughout the winter. Among the first bulls ashore were those which had the longest territorial tenures. The mean period of tenure for 13 bulls seen to copulate was 34.3±9.0 days. New bulls continued to arrive and fight for territories on the breeding beach throughout the study period. Many were successful and mean territory size declined from about 60 m2 in mid-November to 22 m3 in December. More than 3000 boundary displays between known bulls were recorded and analysed. These were largely ritualized although in 14% of displays bites were exchanged. Outright fighting was infrequent in relation to the total number of inter-male encounters. 94% of of the fights occurred on the first day a pair of bulls became neighbours. Less than 50% of bulls holding territory were seen to copulate and the mean copulation frequency for these bulls was 10. During late December, by which time most females had mated, adult males ceased to maintain their territories actively and many abandoned them completely. Features of the social organization are compared with those of other otariid seals and the interrelationships between period of tenure, territory size, form of boundary display and copulation frequency are discussed in relation to environmental and social influences. Within fur seals and sea lions, differences in social organization during the breeding season do not seem to be related to phylogenetic differences.  相似文献

Nutrient and energy content of freshwater fishes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The analyses of fresh total body homogenates of 2385 freshwater fishes from 17 species originating in natural waters and aquaculture facilities resulted in average values of 19.1–37.8% dry matter, 13.6–18.3% crude protein, 0.8–18.3% crude fat, 0.16–2.17% nitrogen-free extracts (NFE), 2.2–2.9% nitrogen and 0.39–1.02% phosphorus. The gross energy content ranged from 3.83 to 11.49 MJ/kg. With increasing fat content in the fishes, water content decreased and dry matter content increased. Through this interdependence, a significant correlation was found between dry matter and crude fat and energy content (r2=0.92–0.97). The values of crude protein, crude ash, NFE, nitrogen and phosphorus did not show any significant influence on dry matter content (r2=0.0005–0.46). Based on the significant correlation between dry matter and gross energy (gross energy [MJ/kg]=0.0253 dry matter [%]1.6783), the energy content of freshwater fishes can easily be estimated by the dry matter content in the total body.  相似文献

The growth, nucleic acid and protein contents of walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma larvae reared at prey densities of 10, 30, 50, and 500 prey 1-1 were measured for the first 9 days after the feeding initiation at 6° C. Incremental growth rates of larvae (mm day-1) were low and variable for the first 7 days after feeding initiation. Growth rates and rates of RNA, DNA, and protein accumulation by larvae reared at 500 prey 1-1 were positive while those of larvae reared at the lower prey levels did not differ significantly from zero. The RNA/DNA ratio was variable and exhibited no significant trend among food treatments. Estimates of instantaneous protein growth rates ranged from - 6·7 to 13·2% day-1 at food densities of 10 and 500 prey 1-1, respectively, and were moderately correlated with larval RNA/DNA ratios ( r = 0·628). The results suggest that in situ protein growth rates of first-feeding pollock larvae may be influenced by prey fields within the range of ambient food densities reported for sub-Arctic ecosystems.  相似文献
