Lake Pamvotis is a moderately sized (22 km2) shallow (z avg=4 m) lake with a polymictic stratification regime located in northwest Greece. The lake has undergone cultural eutrophication over the past 40 years and is currently eutrophic (annual averages of FRP=0.07 mg P l-1, TP=0.11 mg P l-1, NH4 +=0.25 mg N l-1, NO3 =0.56 mg N l-1). FRP and NH4 + levels are correlated to external loading from streams during the winter and spring, and to internal loading during multi-day periods of summer stratification. Algal blooms occurred in summer (July–August green algae, August–September blue-green algae), autumn (October blue-green algae and diatoms), and winter (February diatoms), but not in the spring (March–June). The phytoplankton underwent brief periods of N- and P-limitation, though persistent low transparency (secchi depth of 60–80 cm) also suggests periods of light limitation. Rotifers counts were highest from mid-summer to early autumn whereas copepods were high in the spring and cladocerans were low in the summer. Removal of industrial and sewage point sources a decade ago resulted in a decrease in FRP. A phosphorus mass balance identified further reductions in external loading from the predominately agricultural catchment will decrease FRP levels further. The commercial fishery and lake hatchery also provides opportunities to control algal biomass through biomanipulation measures.  相似文献

The relationship between total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentration was determined for Skinner Lake, Indiana over an annual cycle in 1978–79. Total nitrogen:total phosphorus ratios in the epilimnion ranged from 19 to 220 suggesting a phosphorus-dependent algal yield in the epilimnion. Approximately 90% of annual TP loading reached the lake via streamflow, and 93% of this entered during snowmelt and spring-overturn periods. At that time incoming water flushed the lake 2.4 times. Atmospheric loading accounted for 1.4% of annual TP load. Internal hypolimnetic TP loading occurred during summer stratification. Mean [chl a] for the ice-free period was 15.15 mg m–3, within the range expected for eutrophic lakes. The 1978–79 data were used in conjuction with the Vollenweider & Kerekes (1980) model to produce a model specific for the Skinner Lake system. The model predicted mean epilimnetic total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations from mean total phosphorus concentration in inlet streams and from lake water residence time during the period of spring overturn and summer stratification. The Skinner-specific model was tested in 1982 and it closely predicted observed mean epilimnetic [TP] and [chl a] during the ice-free period. This study shows that variability in lake models which average data over an annual period can be reduced by considering lake-specific seasonal variation in hydrology and external TP loading.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to document the mainly chemical behaviour of two linked artificial lakes used for both stormwater management and recreation in the new town of Craigavon. Further, the understanding of their behaviour should help in their management and the design of other similar lakes. The lake mean total phosphorus (73 µg P l–1), nitrate (0.50 mg N l–1) and chlorophyll a (25 µg l–1) concentrations, Secchi depth (1.2 m) and the estimated total phosphorus loading (1.98 g m–2 a–1) all classify the main lake as eutrophic. An important source of the phosphorus load on the lakes is the urban area of Craigavon (52% of the total load). The interrelationships between total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and Secchi depth in the main lake are similar to those in natural ones. In addition, the lake follows the total phosphorus load — trophic state relationships (lake total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations and Secchi depth) found to apply elsewhere. These two points indicate that the artificial lakes in Craigavon behave similarly to natural ones.  相似文献

Submerged macrophytes are a major component of freshwater ecosystems, yet their net effect on water column phosphorus (P), algae, and bacterioplankton is not well understood. A 4-month mass-balance study during the summer quantified the net effect of a large (5.5 ha) undisturbed macrophyte bed on these water-column properties. The bed is located in a slow-flowing (0.05–0.1 cm s–1) channel between two lakes, allowing for the quantification of inputs and outputs. The P budget for the study period showed that, despite considerable short-term variation, the macrophyte bed was a negligible net sink for P (0.06 mg m–2 day–1, range from –0.76 to +0.79 mg m–2 day–1), demonstrating that loading and uptake processes in the weedbed roughly balance over the summer. Chlorophyll a was disproportionately retained relative to particulate organic carbon (POC), indicating that the algal component of the POC was preferentially trapped. However, the principal contribution of the weedbed to the open water was a consistent positive influence on bacterioplankton production over the summer. Conservative extrapolations based on measured August specific exports (m–2 day–1) of P and bacterial production exiting the weedbed applied to five regional lakes varying in lake morphometry and macrophyte cover suggest that even in the most macrophyte dominated of lakes (66% cover), P loading from submerged weedbeds never exceeds 1% day–1 of standing epilimnetic P levels, whereas subsidization of bacterioplankton production can reach upward of 20% day–1. The presence of submerged macrophytes therefore differentially modifies algae and bacteria in the water column, while modestly altering P dynamics over the summer.  相似文献

Phytoplankton dynamics in a deep, tropical, hyposaline lake   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The annual variation of the phytoplankton assemblage of deep (64.6 m), hyposaline (8.5 g l–1) Lake Alchichica, central Mexico (19 ° N, 97° W), was analyzed in relation to thermal regime, and nutrients concentrations. Lake Alchichica is warm monomictic with a 3-month circulation period during the dry, cold season. During the stratified period in the warm, wet season, the hypolimnion became anoxic. N–NH3 ranged between non detectable (n.d.) and 0.98 mg l–1, N–NO2 between n.d. and 0.007 mg l–1, N–NO3 from 0.1 to 1.0 mg l–1 and P–PO4 from n.d. to 0.54 mg l–1. Highest nutrient concentrations were found in the circulation period. Chlorophyll a varied from <1 to 19.8 g l–1 but most values were <5 g l–1. The euphotic zone (>1% PAR) usually comprised the top 15–20 m. Nineteen algae species were identified, most of them are typical inhabitants of salt lakes. Diatoms showed the highest species number (10) but the small chlorophyte Monoraphidium minutum, the single-cell cyanobacteria, Synechocystis aquatilis, and the colonial chlorophyte, Oocystis parva, were the numerical dominant species over the annual cycle. Chlorophytes, small cyanobacteria and diatoms dominated in the circulation period producing a bloom comparable to the spring bloom in temperate lakes. At the end of the circulation and at the beginning of stratification periods, the presence of a bloom of the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, N. spumigena, indicated nitrogen-deficit conditions. The well-stratified season was characterized by low epilimnetic nutrients levels and the dominance of small single-cell cyanobacteria and colonial chlorophytes. Phytoplankton dynamics in tropical Lake Alchichica is similar to the pattern observed in some deep, hyposaline, North American temperate lakes.  相似文献

Since 1983 severe phytoplankton collapses have occurred 1–4 times every summer in the shallow and hypertrophic Lake Søbygård, which is recovering after a ten-fold decrease of the external phosphorus loading in 1982. In July 1985, for example, chlorophyll a changed from 650 µg l–1 to about 12 µg 1–1 within 3–5 days. Simultaneously, oxygen concentration dropped from 20–25 mg O2l–1 to less than 1 mg O2l–1, and pH decreased from 10.7 to 8.9. Less than 10 days later the phytoplankton biomass had fully recovered. During all phytoplankton collapses the density of filter-feeding zooplankton increased markedly, and a clear-water period followed. Due to marked changes in age structure of the fish stock, different zooplankton species were responsible for the density increase in different years, and consequently different collapse patterns and frequencies were observed. The sudden increase in density of filter-feeding zooplankton from a generally low summer level to extremely high levels during algae collapses, which occurred three times from July 1984 to June 1986, could neither be explained by changes in regulation from below (food) nor from above (predation). The density increase was found after a period with high N/P ratios in phytoplankton or nitrate depletion in the lake. During that period phytoplankton biomass, primary production and thus pH decreased, the latter from 10.8–11.0 to 10.5. We hypothesize that direct or indirect effects of high pH are important in controlling the filter-feeding zooplankton in this hypertrophic lake. Secondarily, this situation affects the trophic interactions in the lake water and the net internal loading of nutrients. Consequently, not only a high content of planktivorous fish but also a high pH may promote uncoupling of the grazing food-web in highly eutrophic shallow lakes, and thereby enhance eutrophication.A tentative model is presented for the occurrence of collapses, and their pattern in hypertrophic lakes with various fish densities.  相似文献

The material for pigment analysis was collected 1–3 times a year from Lake Peipsi-Pihkva in 1983, 1987, 1988, 1991 and 1992–1995. Concentrations of chlorophyll a, b and c (Chla, Chlb, Chlc), pheopigment (Pheo) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were measured biweekly in 1985–1986. The mean of all Chla values was 20.2 mg m–1 (median 13.3 mg m–1) indicating the eutrophic state of the lake. Average Chlb, Chlc, Pheo and carotenoid (Car) contents were 3.7 mg m–3, 4.1 mg m–3, 3.0 mg m–3 and 4.8 mg m–3, respectively. The average Chlb/Chla ratio was 22.9%, Chlc/Chla 23.4%, Pheo/Chla 38%, Car/Chla 37% and ATP/Chla 3%, the medians being 14.3, 13.6, 17.5, 39.4 and 1.9%, respectively. The proportion of Chla in phytoplankton biomass was 0.41%, median 0.32%. There were no significant differences in temperature, oxygen concentration, Chla, and ATP between the surface and bottom water; the lake was polymictic during the vegetation period. The Chla concentration had its first peak in May followed by a decrease in June and July. In late summer Chla increased again achieving its seasonal maximum in late autumn. The ATP concentration was the highest during spring and early summer, decreasing drastically in autumn together with the decline of primary production. ATP/Chla was the highest during the clear water period in June and early July, which coincided also with the high proportion of Chla in phytoplankton biomass. The highest Chla occurred in November (average 37.2 mg m–3) when Secchi transparency was the lowest (1.05 m). Concentrations of Chlb, Chlc and carotenoids were the highest in August, that of Pheo in June. Concentrations of Chla and other pigments were the lowest in the northern part of Lake Peipsi (mean 14.7 mg m–3, median 12.5 mg m–3) and the highest in the southern part of Lake Pihkva (mean 47.9 mg m–3, median 16.3 mg m–3). An increase of Chla and decrease of Secchi depth could be noticed in 1983–1988, while in 1988–1994 the tendency was opposite.  相似文献

The phosphorus cycle in the ecosystem of the shallow, hypertrophic Loosdrecht lakes (The Netherlands) was simulated by means of the dynamic eutrophication model PCLOOS. The model comprises three algal groups, zooplankton, fish, detritus, zoobenthos, sediment detritus and some inorganic phosphorus fractions. All organic compartments are modelled in two elements, carbon and phosphorus. Within the model system, the phosphorus cycle is considered as completely closed. Carbon and phosphorus are described independently, so that the dynamics of the P/C ratios can be modelled. The model has been partly calibrated by a method based on Bayesian statistics combined with a Range Check procedure.Simulations were carried out for Lake Loosdrecht for the periods before and after the restoration measures in 1984, which reduced the external phosphorus loading to the lake from ca. 2 mgP m–2 d–1 to 1 mgP m–2 d–1. The model outcome was largely comparable withthe measured data. Total phosphorus has slowly decreased from an average 130 µgP l–1 to ca. 80 µgP l–1, but chlorophyll-a (ca. 150 µg 1–1, summer-averaged) and seston concentrations (8–15 mgC 1–1) hardly changed since the restoration measures. About two-thirds of the seston consisted of detritus, while the phytoplankton remained dominated by filamentous cyanobacteria. The P/C ratio of the seston decreased from ca. 1.0% to 0.7%, while the P/C ratios of zooplankton, zoobenthos and fish have remained constant and are much higher. The system showed a delayed response to the decreased phosphorus loading until a new equilibrium was reached in ca. five years. Major reasons for the observed resilience of the lake in responding to the load reduction are the high phosphorus assimilation efficiency of the cyanobacteria and the high internal recycling of phosphorus. A further reduction of nutrient loading, perhaps in combination with additional measures like biomanipulation, will be the most fruitful additional restoration measure.  相似文献

After a reduction of the external phosphorus loading to a lake, an internal loading from the sediments may delay the improvement of the water quality. The accepted method to combat internal loading is careful dredging of the upper sediment layers (Cooke et al., 1986), but this method is costly and time consuming. Addition of phosphorus binding agents to the sediments might offer an alternative. In the Netherlands the use of aluminum compounds, the most common phosphorus binding agent, for water quality improvement purposes is not favoured. Therefore a sediment treatment with a solution of iron(III)chloride was tested. Iron was chosen because it is considered to be a natural binder of phosphate. 100 g m–2 of Fe3+ were added to the sediments of the shallow (1.75 m average depth) and eutrophic Lake Groot Vogelenzang (The Netherlands) in October and November 1989. The iron(III)chloride solution was diluted 100 times with lake water and mixed with the surface sediments with a water jet.Following the addition the concentrations of total phosphorus (Fig. 1), chlorophyll-a and suspended solids decreased. This improvement of the water quality lasted for three months. After this time the total phosphorus concentration increased again, but remained at a lower level than in spring and summer of 1989. The phosphorus release rate from the sediments as measured from intact sediment cores decreased from 4 to 1.2 mg P m–2 d–1 (n = 5), and the bioavailability of the sediment phosphorus, as measured with bioassays, decreased from 34 to 23% (n = 5) shortly after the treatment. One year after the treatment the release rate was increased to 3 mg P m–2 d–1 (n = 5). Before treatment, the lake was thought to have a residence time of over one year. However, the chloride added to the lake disappeared according to a dilution rate of 0.03 d–1 or a retention time of about 35 days. A high external loading due to rapid flushing with phosphorus-rich water from surrounding lakes possibly prevented a more durable improvement in water quality. Another possibility is that the iron addition has lost its phosphate binding capacity due to reduction or binding with other anions like carbonate or sulphide. Therefore the suitability of the method to reduce internal loading and especially the long term availability of added iron to bind phosphorus needs additional proof. The treatment of the 18 ha area of Lake Groot Vogelenzang took three weeks. The operational costs were about US$ 125000. This is fast and cheap compared to dredging. Application of the technique is limited to those cases where the sediments are not polluted with micro-pollutants and the water depth need not be increased.  相似文献

The production rate ofEichhornia crassipes was stimulated by water of the river Ganga and by prevailing environmental conditions. It was highest in October (4.76 g.m–2.d–1) and was positively correlated with ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus in the water but negatively correlated with total alkalinity and transparency. The average annual production of 14.13 t.ha–1.a–1 is equivalent to the average production of 0.067 t.ha–1.a–1 phosphorus and 0.40 t.ha–1.a–1 nitrogen. The concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus of the plant varied seasonally. They decreased with increasing production rate in summer and monsoon.  相似文献

Walker Lake is a monomictic, nitrogen-limited, terminal lake located in western Nevada. It is one of only eight large (Area>100 km2, Z { mean}>15 m) saline lakes of moderate salinity (3–20 g l–1) worldwide, and one of the few to support an endemic trout fishery (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi). As a result of anthropogenic desiccation, between 1882 and 1996 the lake's volume has dropped from 11.1 to 2.7 km3 and salinity has increased from 2.6 to 12–13 g l–1. This study, conducted between 1992 and 1998, examined the effects of desiccation on the limnology of the lake. Increases in salinity over the past two decades caused the extinction of two zooplankton species, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula and Acanthocyclops vernalis. Recent increases in salinity have not negatively affected the lake's dominant phytoplankton species, the filamentous blue-green algae Nodularia spumigena. In 1994 high salinity levels (14–15 g l–1) caused a decrease in tui chub minnow populations, the main source of food for Lahontan cutthroat trout, and a subsequent decrease in the health of stocked trout. Lake shrinkage has resulted in hypolimnetic anoxia and hypolimnetic accumulation of ammonia (800–2000 g-N l–1) and sulfide (15 mg l–1) to levels toxic to trout. Internal loading of ammonia via hypolimnetic entrainment during summer wind mixing (170 Mg-N during a single event), vertical diffusion (225–500 Mg-N year–1), and fall destratification (540–740 Mg-N year–1) exceeds external nitrogen loading (<25 Mg-N year–1). Increasing salinity in combination with factors related to hypolimnetic anoxia have stressed trout populations and caused a decline in trout size and longevity. If desiccation continues unabated, the lake will be too saline (>15–16 g l–1) to support trout and chub fisheries in 20 years, and in 50–60 years the lake will reach hydrologic equilibrium at a volume of 1.0 km3 and a salinity of 34 g l–1.  相似文献

Three shallow, lowland lochs (lakes) in the Tayside region of Scotland, experiencing the same climatic regime, were found to be dimictic lakes showing similar clinograde oxygen distributions in summer. Land use differences in their catchments were shown to result in estimated total nutrient surface loadings from 0.3 to 32 g m–2 a–1 phosphorus and from 4 to 240 g m–2 a–1 nitrogen. The major ions in the lochs were calcium and carbonate, but with elevated sulphate levels in all three lochs and an increase in sodium, chloride and sulphate in Forfar loch, which was affected by sewage effluent. Conductivity and total alkalinity showed marked increases with greater intensity of land use, from 64 to 439 µS cm–1 and 0.5–3 meq l–1 Maximum winter loch concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus ranged from 60 to just under 5 000 mg m–3 and of inorganic nitrogen from 500 to 10500 mg m–3. Maximum chlorophyll a ranged from 20 to 250 mg m–3 and comparisons indicated that above winter levels of 5000 mg m–3 N and 500 mg m–3 P, the nutrient-chlorophyll relationships did not hold. Predictions of nutrient input, from land use categories and soil losses of N and P derived from other north temperate areas, were shown to be comparable with inputs calculated from loch measurements. Models predicting loch concentrations of phosphorus from inputs were comparable with measured concentrations, but predictions of chlorophyll and transparency became less accurate with higher nutrient levels. The lochs were mesotrophic (the Lowes), eutrophic (Balgavies) and hypertrophic (Forfar) under the several classification systems used. The implications of their nutrient status for lake management are discussed and the value of studying this unique lake series in a similar physical environment but with considerable chemical differences is considered.  相似文献

Primary production and phytoplankton in polyhumic lakes showed a very distinct seasonal succession. A vigorous spring maximum produced by Chlamydomonas green algae at the beginning of the growing season and two summer maxima composed mainly of Mallomonas caudata Iwanoff were typical. The annual primary production was ca. 6 g org. C · m–2 in both lakes. The mean epilimnetic biomass was 1.1 in the first lake and 2.2 g · m–2 (ww) in the second one. The maximum phytoplankton biomass, 14 g · m–2, was observed during the vernal peak in May.  相似文献

Primary Production of Phytoplankton in a Strongly Stratified Temperate Lake   总被引:7,自引:7,他引:0
Lake Verevi (12.6 ha, maximum depth 11.0 m, mean depth 3.6 m) is a strongly eutrophic and stratified lake. Planktothrix agardhii is the most characteristic phytoplankton species in summer and autumn, while photosynthesizing sulphur bacteria can occur massively in the metalimnion. Primary production (PP) and chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) were seasonally studied in 1991, 1993, 2000, and 2001. Vertical distribution of PP was rather complex, having usually two peaks, one at or near the surface (0–1 m), and another deeper (at 3–7 m) in the metalimnion. The values of dark fixation of CO2 in the metalimnion were in most cases higher than those in the upper water layer. Considering the average daily PP 896 mg C m−2 and yearly PP 162 mg C m−2, Secchi depth 2.34 m, and epilimnetic concentrations of chlorophyll a (19.6 mg m−3), total nitrogen and total phosphorus (TP, 52 mg m−3) in 2000, L. Verevi is a eutrophic lake of a ‘good’ status. Considering the total amounts of nutrients stored in the hypolimnion, the average potential concentrations in the whole water column could achieve 1885 mg m−3 of TN and 170 mg m−3 of TP reflecting hypertrophic conditions and a ‚bad’ status. Improvement of the epilimnetic water quality from the 1990s to the 2000s may have resulted from incomplete spring mixing and might not reflect the real improvement. A decreased nutrient concentration in the epilimnion has supported the establishment of a ‘clear epilimnion state’ allowing light to penetrate into the nutrient-rich metalimnion and sustaining a high production of cyanobacteria and phototrophic sulphur bacteria.  相似文献

Lake Vesijärvi, southern Finland, suffered sewere eutrophication by sewage effluent from the city of Lahti during the 1960's and the early 1970's. The municipal sewage loading was diverted from the lake in 1976 and the lake started to recover. However, in the 1980's blue-green algal blooms increased again and the recovery of the lake faded. Enclosure experiments demonstrated that high roach (Rutilus rutilus) biomass is one of the key factors in the fading recovery of the lake. In this study, the influence of roach and another cyprinid fish species (bleak, Alburnus alburnus) to planktonic algal productivity and biomass in Lake Vesijärvi was examined. Enclosure experiments in the field showed the impacts of planktivorous bleak on water quality; in an enclosure with a density of 1 fish m–2 average daily algal production (1370 mg C m–2) and chlorophyll-a concentration (50–90 µg 1–1) were more than twice that in an enclosure without fish. Laboratory experiments showed that the availability of planktonic food affects the foraging behaviour of roach and consequently the internal nutrient loading from the sediment into the water. Roach caused the highest phosphorus loading and turbidity when there was no zooplanktonic food available in the water. The possible interactions between planktivorous and omnivorous fish species are discussed.  相似文献

The summer stratification phosphorus budget for eutrophic Edinboro Lake in northwestern Pennsylvania was determined. Phosphorus loading from internal sources contributed 141 kg, (79%) and 55 kg, (68%) of the mass phosphorus increase in the lake in 1981 and 1982, respectively. Calculated anaerobic sediment release rates of total phosphorus were 9.9 and 3.7 mg m–2 day–1 for these two years. The observed summer maximum chlorophyll a concentration was 1.5–3 times greater than that predicted by existing models. Year-to-year variability in the internal phosphorus load for this lake and others is discussed. Without a data base that will permit the comparison of lakes and with and without a significant supply of internal phosphorus, prediction of the relative importance of internal loading in a particular lake will be difficult.  相似文献

Epilimnetic and hypolimnetic bacterial production (BP) were measured once in summer, by the incorporation of [3H] - Leucine in each of 14 Quebec (Canada) lakes varying in nutrient content and morphometry. The epilimnetic and hypolimnetic BP were evaluated at two scales: the common per unit volume and areal (m–2) scale. The per unit volume scale epilimnetic BP was best predicted by total phosphorus (TP, r 2=0.63), and by water residence time (WRT r 2=0.57), with WRT serving as a surrogate for the nutrient and organic matter supply from the catchments. Total phosphorus and lake mean depth (Z m) together explained 79% of the variation in epilimnetic BP (l–1). In contrast, hypolimnetic BP (l–1) was neither linked to nutrients (TP or TN) or dissolved organic carbon (DOC) but only to measures of lake morphometry and best of all to hypolimnetic thickness (Zh; r 2=0.74). With increased Zh, there is an increased dilution of settling organic particles and their nutrients, resulting in a decrease in BP per litre. Conversely, when BP is expressed in areal units (m–2), hypolimnetic production increases with increasing hypolimnetic thickness. Water column thickness is a master variable, which together with Chl a (abundance of particles) determines hypolimnetic BP at the whole system scale even though the trophic status is the best single indicator of epilimnetic BP on a volumetric scale. Conclusions drawn invariably change with the scale of investigation. Moreover, it is clear that lake morphometry has a major impact on BP. A comparison of whole water column integrated BP with literature derived estimates of the equivalent sediment production (m–2) below suggests that if the estimated sediment rates are not complete technique artefacts, they are likely to be an order of magnitude higher than the water column rates (m–2) at the maximum depth sampling sites. The relative importance of the sediments could be expected to rise with a decline in the maximum depth of lakes, characterized by progressively thinner hypolimnia. The present findings point to both a primarily allocthonous fuelling of sediment production and an uncoupling of water and sediment BP.  相似文献

Lake Große Fuchskuhle (Brandenburg, Germany) is a naturally acidic bog lake that was artificially divided into four basins by large plastic curtains for biomanipulation experiments in 1990. Different numbers of perch were added to each compartment beginning in the spring of 1993. The species composition and abundance of phytoplankton, pH, nutrient concentrations, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chlorophyll a content were analyzed at regular intervals during 1991 and 1998. The division of the lake resulted in divergent developments in the physical and chemical environment of the compartments. This study compared the phytoplankton assemblages of the Northeast- (NE) and Southwest- (SW) basins which differed strongly in chemistry during the investigation period. Divergent developments in phytoplankton species composition in both basins can be explained by changes in physical and chemical conditions (bottom-up effects). Increased pH values and DOC concentrations probably favoured mass developments of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium uberrimum since 1993, while increased nutrients (dissolved inorganic carbon, total nitrogen and especially total phosphorus) as well as further changes in pH and DOC led to the dominance of the raphidophyte Gonyostomum semen in 1998. This bloom was characterized by extreme biomasses of up to 143 mg l–1 wet weight, corresponding with high chlorophyll a concentrations of up to 413 g l–1 at the same time. In contrast, no significant relationship between experimental manipulations by piscivorous fish stocking (top-down effects) and phytoplankton biomass were observed.  相似文献

The effects of light intensity, oxygen concentration, and pH on the rates of photosynthesis and net excretion by metalimnetic phytoplankton populations of Little Crooked Lake, Indiana, were studied. Photosynthetic rates increased from 1.42 to 3.14 mg C·mg–1 chlorophylla·hour–1 within a range of light intensities from 65 to 150E·m–2·sec–1, whereas net excretion remained constant at 0.05 mg C·mg–1 chlorophylla·hour–1. Bacteria assimilated approximately 50% of the carbon released by the phytoplankton under these conditions. Excreted carbon (organic compounds either assimilated by bacteria or dissolved in the lake water) was produced by phytoplankton at rates of 0.02–0.15 mg C·mg–1 chlorophylla·hour–1. These rates were 6%–13% of the photosynthetic rates of the phytoplankton. Both total excretion of carbon and bacterial assimilation of excreted carbon increased at high light intensities whereas net excretion remained fairly constant. Elevated oxygen concentrations in samples incubated at 150E· m–2·sec–1 decreased rates of both photosynthesis and net excretion. The photosynthetic rate increased from 3.0 to 5.0 mg C·mg–1 chlorophylla· hour–1 as the pH was raised from 7.5 to 8.8. Net excretion within this range decreased slightly. Calculation of total primary production using a numerical model showed that whereas 225.8 g C·m–2 was photosynthetically fixed between 12 May and 24 August 1982, a maximum of about 9.3 g C·m–2 was released extracellularly.  相似文献

Restoration of the highly eutrophic Reeuwijk lakes (ca. 700 ha) started in 1986 by reducing the external phosphorus loading. As an additional measure to improve the quality of the lake water, the structure of the fish population in Lake Klein Vogelenzang (18 ha) was altered in 1989 by the removal of ca. 100 kg ha–1 bream from the lake in April and December. This constituted about 50% of the total bream biomass in the lake. The fish-stock reduction in April, 1989, was initially followed by high phosphorus concentrations, probably the result of considerable phosphorus release from the sediments. The resulting heavy algal blooms that occurred reduced the transparency to very low values. During the summer the zooplankton population increased markedly in numbers coinciding with reductions in total suspended matter including (blue-green) algae. A great improvement in Secchi-disc transparency was observed and by the end of December, 1989, the bottom of the lake (1.5–2.0 m) was visible. After heavy storms in January and February 1990, transparency dropped to < 1 m as a result of resuspension of high concentrations of suspended matter from the bottom sediments. Although transparency over the rest of 1990 was higher than in 1988, i.e. the year preceding the removal of fish (biomanipulation), it was lower than expected, based on the results of 1989. The study shows that technical and biological factors can cause serious management problems for the implementation of biomanipulation in larger water bodies.  相似文献
