An enlargement of the peduncle and rachis of the terminal racemeand the petiole of the uppermost mainstem leaf was observedin soybean plants [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] treated with thecytokinin, 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Histological studies wereperformed to determine the timing and extent of anatomical changesaccompanying BAP treatment. Swelling of treated ‘Tracy-M’peduncles, rachises, and petioles was observed within 4–6d after treatment initiation. A significant increase in totalcross-sectional tissue area was observed at lower and intermediateinternodes of treated rachises after 11 d. Rachis enlargementwas due to increases in both cell size and cell number, particularlyof the vascular tissue. In treated petioles of IX93-100, procambialcells of vascular bundles were the first to respond to the BAPtreatment. 以云南元江普通野生稻为供体亲本,籼稻品种特青为轮回亲本构建高代回交群体,用SSR标记构建连锁图谱,在第1、2、3、4、7和10染色体上定位到7个控制穗颈大维管束数的QTL,在第1、2、3、4和8染色体上定位到5个控制穗颈小维管束数的QTL,在第11和12以外的10条染色体上,共定位到15个控制穗一、二次枝梗数和穗颖花数QTL。来自野生稻的等位基因大多表现负效,能显著减少群体的穗颈维管束数、枝梗数和颖花数,说明从野生稻演化成栽培稻的过程中,可能淘汰了一些对产量不利的QTL,保留了有利的QTL。相当一部分控制穗颈维管束数、枝梗数及颖花数的QTL在染色体上成簇分布或紧密连锁,且加性效应的方向一致,从理论上解释了这些性状表型显著相关的遗传基础,同时也说明在人工选择或自然选择下,这些性状可能存在平行进化或协同进化的关系。  相似文献

The vascular system in the rachis of ears of wheat (Triticumaestivum L. cvs Gamenya, Olympic and Bungulla) was examinedon material grown in the field and in a growth cabinet. In theinternodes, central and peripheral bundles were observed andtheir mean number and size were determined. A significant 1:1 relationship between the number of spikelets on the ear andthe number of central bundles at the base of the rachis wasestablished. The number of both central and peripheral bundlesdeclined acropetally along thé length of the rachis.The decline in peripheral bundles occurred mainly between internodes1 and 6, numbered from the base. The decline in central bundlesoccurred at a rate of less than one bundle per internode betweeninternodes 1 and 4, though in some ears, there was no decline;in larger ears, central bundles declined at a rate of one totwo bundles per internode between internodes 5 and 11. Aboveinternode 11, the rate of decline varied with ear size. Threecentral bundles consistently reached the terminal spikelet.The number and cross-sectional surface area of xylem vesselsand sieve tubes and the total vascular size also declined acropetallyalong the rachis. The decline in total vascular size was dueto (a) some bundles branching and to reductions in size, (b)the diversion or dropping of bundles into spikelets, or (c)a combination of (a) and (b). The influence of shade on the growth and sink activity of youngflower heads and peduncles of white clover (Trifolium repensL.) plants was measured in controlled environments. Measurementof the peduncle elongation rate using a linear voltage displacementtransducer showed that when the inflorescence alone was shaded,peduncle elongation was higher than in the light. Translocationstudies using 11C-labelling techniques showed that shading theinflorescence alone had little effect on translocation of assimilatesinto the inflorescence but induced a major change in partitioningof assimilates within it. Peduncle elongation induced by shadeaccompanied an increase in partitioning of photoassimilatesto the peduncle, at the expense of the flower head. The effects of a number of metabolic inhibitors on calcificationand photosynthesis in Halimeda tuna, H. discoidea, and H. macrolobaare described. The inhibitors used are CCCP, DNP, DCMU, azide,cyanide, chloramphenicol, cycloheximide, and Diamox. The effectsof these inhibitors, although complex, are consistent with ourmodel of calcification in Halimeda. Inhibition of photosyntheticCO2 uptake inhibits calcification as does stimulation of respiratoryCO2 evolution (i.e. uncoupling). There is also indirect evidencefor the presence of a possible light stimulated H+ efflux whichinhibits calcification. The observed calcification rate is thereforethe result of a number of factors which affect the concentrationof COand the pH in the intercellular space of the Halimedathallus. The results obtained with the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor Diamoxprovide further evidence for the effective separation of theintercellular space from the external medium by the appressedperipheral utricles.  相似文献

A cultivar from each of four cereal species (Avena sativa L.,cv. Swan, Hordeum vulgare, L., cv. Clipper, Triticum aestivumL., cv. Gabo, and Secale cereale L., cv. South Australian Rye)was grown in controlled environment chambers in a 10-h photoperiod(short days) or 10-h photoperiod supplemented with a 6-h extensionby incandescent light. The developmental morphology of the inflorescenceswas followed to ascertain whether there were any common developmentalinterrelationships between the species. Inflorescence internodeelongation was initiated when the floret initial first appeared,irrespective of whether it occurred on the most advanced lateralspikelet or on the terminal spikelet of the rachis. The glumes(infertile bracts) of the terminal spikelet of the rachis wereinitiated when the first second-order inflorescence branch appeared,irrespective of whether the second-order inflorescence branchwas a floret initial or a lateral spikelet, as in Triticum sp.,or an inflorescence (panicle) branch, as in Avena sp. Cessationof the activity of the apical meristem, as measured by primordiumformation, was not correlated with any particular stage of floraldevelopment but appeared to be due to a lack of nutrients causedby an increasing competitiveness for the available nutrientsfrom the developing spikelets which are situated closer to thevascular system than the apical meristem.  相似文献

  1. Using the technique of synchronous culture, investigationsweremade of the effects of temperature and light-intensityon cellularlife cycle of Chlorella ellipsoidea. Some improvementsin theculture technique for obtaining a good synchrony of algalgrowthwere described.
  2. By following the changes of averagecell volume and cell numberoccurring during culturing, therates of the following processesof life cycle were determined:(i) "growth" (or the increasein cell mass) occurring from thestage of smaller cells (Da)to the stage of ripened cell (L3),(ii) "ripening" (or processofformation of "nuclear substances"as estimated from the averagenumber of daughter cells formedfrom single mother cell), and(iii) " maturing and division" which leads to the full maturationof mother cells (L-cells)and their division into separate daughtercells (D-cells).
  3. "Growth"and "ripening" were found to be dependent in light,"maturingand division" light-independent. The time requiredfor "growth"and "ripening" (C) is dependent on temperaturebut independentof light intensity, the onset of "maturing anddivision" occurringat the same time (D) of culturing undervaried light intensities.The average cell volume at this stage(L3),however, was foundto be markedly modified by light intensity;larger with highertemperatures (see Fig. 4).

Changes in incubation temperature(under the condition of saturatinglight intensities) were foundto affect the life cycle in thefollowing way: (i) The timeof onset of "maturing and division"(D), varies markedly withculturing temperature; earlier athigher temperatures, (ii)The average cell volume at this stagealso depends on temperature; smaller at higher temperatures.
  5. The average number of daughtercells (n) emerging from singlemother cells, was found to beuninfluenced by culturing temperature;(4.0–4.1 underthe conditions of the present study). Itwas found that thedivision number n is remarkably varied bychanging the lightintensity in the "growth" and "ripening"phases; 2.0 at 1 kilolux,3.7 at 5 kilolux, 4.2 at saturatinglight intensities (10 and25 kilolux). This finding was explainedby assuming a light-dependentformation of "nuclear substances"during the "growth" and "ripening"phases, the quantity of thesubstances in the cell at L3 stagedeterminig the division number.
  6. The experimental data wereanalyzed reaction kinetically, therate constants and othercharacteristics of the reactions constitutingthe processesof life cycle were determined, and values forthe apparent activationenergy for each reaction were computed.The reactions were discussedwith special reference to theirrelationship with photosyntheticprocess was discussed.

Ropalidia marginala, a tropical, primitively eusocial, polistinewasp, is unusual in that the queen (the sole egg-layer) is neitherthe most behaviorally dominant nor the most active individualin the colony. The queen by herself rarely ever initiates interactionstoward her nest mates or unloads returning foragers. There arealways a few workers in the colony who are more dominant andactive than the queen. Absence of the queen from her colonydoes not affect colony maintenance activities such as foragingor brood care, but it always results in one individual becomingvery aggressive and dominant. The dominant worker becomes thenext queen if the original queen does not return. The queendoes not appear to play any significant role in colony activityregulation. Instead, colony activities appear to be regulatedby several mechanisms including dominance behavior toward foragers,feeding of larvae, and the unloading of returning foragers,all mediated by workers themselves. Regulation of colony maintenanceappears to be based on direct evaluation of the needs of thecolony by the workers themselves. The queen however has perfectreproductive control over all workers; workers never lay eggsin the presence of the queen. It appears therefore that themechanisms involved in regulation of worker activity and workerreproduction are separate in R marginata. These findings contrastwith other primitively eusocial species where the queen actsas a "central pacemaker" and controls both worker activity andworker reproduction.  相似文献

Gradients along the transport pathway from the peduncle to the endosperm cavity were examined during grain filling in wheat. Sieve tube exudate was collected from severed aphid stylets established on the peduncle and rachis and on the vascular bundles in the creases of grains. Phloem exudate could also be collected from broken grain pedicels, and by puncturing the vascular bundle in the grain crease with a needle. Stylets on excised grains persisted exuding, indicating that grain sieve tubes are capable of loading solutes. There was little, if any, discernible gradient in osmolality or solute composition (sucrose, total amino acids) of sieve tube contents along the phloem pathway from the peduncle to the rachis or along the rachis itself. Neither was a gradient detected in osmolality along the sieve tube pathway from the rachis through the rachilla and grain stalk to the crease. Demonstrable solute gradients occurred only across those tissues of the grain crease between the crease sieve tubes and the endosperm cavity, a distance of just 1 millimeter. However, while the sucrose concentration in the sieve tubes was almost tenfold that in the endosperm cavity sap, total amino acids were only threefold higher, and the potassium concentrations of the two were equal. Our observations strongly implicate the movement of assimilates from the sieve tubes and across the crease tissues as important control points in grain filling.  相似文献

Net production of diffusible auxin by fronds of O. cinnamomeahas been found to extend throughout the period of final expansion,with a maximum which occurs shortly after the rate of elongationhas reached its maximum and begun to decline. Auxin is apparentlyproduced only in the pinnae, and from these it enters the rachiswhere its movement is polar. Diffusible auxin moves throughthe rachis without significant loss except in the region ofextensive elongation where a certain amount disappears. No suchdisappearance was found in ether extraction studies. Moreover,in certain cases, ether-extractable auxin persists for as muchas 48 hours in the rachis after removal of the auxin source,although none can be obtained by diffusion under these conditions.It is concluded that diffusible auxin is more closely relatedto growth phenomena in the frond than is extractable auxin.In many cases, there is an apparent failure of transport inthe leaf base which reduces or eliminates expected auxin yieldsby diffusion at this level. Diffusible auxin is an essentialparticipant in three morphogenetic phenomena in the developingfrond: rachis elongation, crozier uncoiling, and final differentiationof xylem and hypodermal sclerenchyma. In none of these can itbe considered as a specific determining factor since the responseto auxin depends upon the physiological state of the reactingcells. In the intact frond diffusible auxin is present in excessof the minimum required for both rachis elongation and uncoiling.Several aspects of the relationship between auxin distributionand development in the frond are discussed.  相似文献

The Effect of Light on the Structure and Organization of Lemna Peroxisomes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effect of light on a number of Lemna minor enzyme activitieswas investigated. The levels of activity of glycolate oxidase,catalase and RuBPCase increased with increasing irradiance,paralleling the increase in Lemna growth rate. In contrast withresults obtained for other species, no glycolate oxidase activitycould be detected in etiolated Lemna fronds or when these weretreated with light or glycolate, in vivo or in vitro, for upto 24 h. The number of peroxisome profiles per cell section was determinedin Lemna grown under different light conditions. When frondswere grown under dim light, the number of peroxisome profilesper cell section appeared to increase with increasing irradiance,although no further increase in the peroxisome number was apparentwhen the fronds were grown under higher irradiances. The levelof glycolate oxidase activity per peroxisome was shown to increasewith increasing irradiance, whereas that of catalase remainedrelatively constant, indicating that differential addition ofenzymes to pre-existing peroxisomes is possible. Peroxisomes from Lemna grown under high irradiance were subjectedto serial sectioning and examined under the electron microscope.Some peroxisomes were found to have a three dimensional structuresuggesting either fission and/or fusion or branching of theseorganelles, supporting the hypothesis of a peroxisomal reticulum.The dynamic relationship between the various shapes is discussed. Sectioning experiments and electrical recording indicate thatthere are many potential pacemakers in polyps of the hydroidTubularia. Functionally the pacemakers are organized primarilyinto pacemaker systems, groups within which there is tight coupling.The different pacemaker systems of a polyp are loosely coupledto one another. There are two principal systems in Tubularia,one in the polyp neck (the NP system) and one in the hydranth(the HP system). In addition, there are pacemakers controllingactivities of individual tentacles. Activity in the NP systemis usually not associated with observable polyp behavior. HPsystem activity is correlated with behavioral responses termedconcerts. Concerts are probably digestive activities; they resultin the mixing of food being digested and the distribution ofthe products of this digestion. The NP systems of polyps ona colony are loosely coupled to one another through one of thethree conducting systems found in Tubularia stalks. The loosecoupling between NP systems of polyps on a colony and the loosecoupling between NP and HP systems within single polyps resultsin there being some coordination of concert activity throughouta colony.  相似文献

Inflorescence length in timothy increases when the photoperiodis reduced from 24 to 14 hours of light; it is also increasedby a reduction in ambient temperature from 75° to 55°F. There is a linear relation between total floret number andear length. Both factors affect ear length by influencing therate of growth of the spike between spikelet initiation andear emergence; this implies an effect on either the number ofprimary spikelet initials or the number of florets producedby branching, or both. Experiments with Lolium temulentum, wheredaylength and temperature influenced initiation and ear developmentin a way similar to that observed in timothy, suggest that thesefactors affect the number of florets at each primary initial.The interrelations of internal and external factors and theirinfluence on inflorescence size in the grasses is discussed.  相似文献

The specific architecture of a Hydroid polyp or a colony is,morphologically speaking, not a stable entity, because it issubjected to an incessant turnover and renewal at both cellularand higher levels. A continuous morphogenetic activity is inmany cases (e.g., Hydra) necessary for the maintenance of theshape and size of the individual polyp, because it has to compensatean equally continuous loss of cells at the level of the tentaclesand at the base of the polyp. Colonial species, such as Tubularia,Campanularia, and others, show regression-replacement cycles,some of which are conditioned by endogenous factors, while othersare released by ecological factors, such as environmental stresses.In all these morphodynamic events, regeneration plays an importantpart. It is an expression of the morphogenetic plasticity ofthe hydroid polyp, just as is asexual reproduction, anothercategory of morphodynamic elforts these organisms are subjectedto.  相似文献

Brood raiding, or reciprocal stealing of brood, is common amongincipient colonies of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta. Paradoxically,workers from a colony that loses its brood during a raid oftenabandon their nest and join the winning colony. Queens abandonedby their workers may then migrate from their original nest siteand attempt to forcefully usurp another incipient colony bydisplacing that colony's queen or queens. This study examinedfactors that influence the success of usurpation attempts. Queensattempting to usurp a nearby colony after laboratory brood raidswere successful in less than 30% of trials. Usurpation attemptswere more successful if workers familiar to the migrating queenwere present in the nest, as would happen if a queen were tofind the colony to which her workers had moved. Cross-fosteringexperiments showed that this effect was due to familiarity ratherthan relatedness. Usurpation attempts were less successful ifthey were delayed by 16 h. The probability of usurpation successwas not reduced by doubling the number of defending workersin the invaded colony. However, colonies founded by three queenswere almost always able to resist usurpation attempts. Theseresults support the hypothesis that workers abandon their natalcolony after losing a brood raid to increase the likelihoodthat their queen can usurp the colony to which they migrate.These results also provide the first evidence that coloniesof ants founded by several queens are better able to resistusurpation attempts than colonies founded by a single queen  相似文献

Ant colonies emigrate frequently from one nest site to another. Emigrations, however, are dangerous, particularly for colonieswith a single queen. The queen is a "vital organ" of the colony,and emigrations expose her to grave peril. The optimal strategyfor a monogynous ant colony, therefore, should be that thequeen moves during the middle of the emigration so that sheis transferred swiftly from the protection of half of the colony in the old nest to the protection of the other half colony inthe new nest. In the ant Leptothorax albipennis, the queenis carried during colony emigration. We tested the null hypothesisthat the queen has a random position in the sequence of transportevents during an emigration. The result of 32 emigrations demonstrated,for the first time, that the transport serial number of thequeen [calculated relative to the total number of all transportevents (i.e., of brood and adult ants together), brood transportevents, or adult ant transport events] is not random and furthermoreoccurs in the middle of the transport sequence. This resultrepresents a colony strategy because we found that the relativetransport serial number of the queen was related neither to emigration distance nor to colony size. Transporting queensin the middle of emigrations is a strategy probably favoredby selection and is an aspect of colonies behaving as group-leveladaptive units.  相似文献

Further observations, by light and electron microscopy, on theanatomy of root contraction in Hyacinthus orientalis cvs. arereported, together with some comparisons with Narcissus andGladiolus. It is maintained that root contraction in these andsome other species is essentially a growth process, as previousinvestigators have shown, and that an understanding of the re-directedgrowth of the cortical cells which brings it about may be basedon the specialized structural features of their cell walls,here described. A technique, using leaf disks, has been developed to study thepenetration of isotopically labelled compounds into leaves underconditions where there is no appreciable change in the concentrationof the external solution and no subsequent translocation. Inthis preliminary survey, the leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris andColeus Blumei were employed to investigate the entry of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyaceticacid (2,4-D), labelled in the carboxyl group with 14C. Over3 days there is no loss of 14C to the atmosphere from treatedleaves of Phaseolus. The rate of penetration is enhanced when(a) the leaves are young, (b) the water status is lowered, (c)the temperature is raised (Q10=2.3–2.8), and (d) a surface-activeagent is added to the external solution. Penetration is alsofavoured by a decrease in the pH, the relation indicating thatboth ions and molecules enter. Penetration is greater in thelight and prior illumination of the tissues positively affectsthe subsequent rate in the light, but not in the dark. In boththe light and the dark considerably more 2,4-D penetrates theabaxial surface of Phaseolus leaves. For Coleus an even greaterdifference between surfaces is found in the light but not inthe dark. For both species in the light the rates of entry intoboth surfaces are proportional to their respective stomataldensities. The simultaneous addition of indoleacetic acid tothe external solution caused more 2,4-D to enter Phaseolus leaves,but the addition of triiodobenzoic acid restricts entry. Therate of penetration remains constant over 24 hours and between0.1 and 200 mg./l. the rate is linearly related to concentration.Subsequent to entry, the 2,4-D is in a form which does not diffusefrom the tissue into buffer or exchange with unlabelled 2,4-D.Moreover, no outward movement takes place from treated tissuewhich has been frozen and thawed. These findings are discussedin relation to previous work on foliar penetration. It is concludedthat at least with Phaseolus penetration largely takes placethrough the guard cells and/or accessory cells.  相似文献

The effects of light quality on the photoperiodic control inthe flowering of a SD duckweed, Lemna perpusilla strain 6746,and a LD duckweed, L. gibba strain G3, were investigated withspecial reference to the interaction between R and B or FR lights. In the diurnal alternation of R or G light and dark periods,L. perpusilla responded as a SDP, but in that of B or FR lightit was almost daylength-indifferent. On the other hand, L. gibbaresponded as a LDP under B, R or FR light, although the criticallight length was altered by the light quality. In the diurnal alternation of R and B or FR light periods containingno dark period, L. perpusilla flowered with the shortening ofthe optimal and critical R light lengths, compared with theplant exposed to that of R light and dark period. The floweringresponse of L. gibba to the R light length showed double peaks,that is, the first peak at the R duration less than 9 hours,and the second at the R duration longer than 9 hours. The firstpeak corresponds to the optimal R light length in L. perpusilla. Under the CL with a mixture of R and B or FR lights, the floweringand frond production were influenced by the intensity ratioof two light given. In both plants, the optimal ratio of B toR or FR to R for the flowering was always greater than thatfor the frond production. It is suggested that the B or FR light interacts with the Rlight in the photoperiodic process in the plants and this interactionbetween the R and B or FR lights should be of importance forobtaining a better understanding of photoperiodism.
