Age-related changes in breeding performance are likely to be mediated through changes in parental foraging performance. We investigated the relationship of foraging performance with age in female little penguins at Phillip Island, Australia, during the guard phase of the 2005 breeding season. Foraging parameters were recorded with accelerometers for birds grouped into three age-classes: (1) young, (2) middle age and (3) old females. We found the diving behaviour of middle-aged birds differed from young and old birds. The dive duration of middle age females was shorter than that of young and old birds while their dive effort (measure for dive and post-dive duration relation) was lower than that of young ones, suggesting middle-aged birds were in better physical condition than other ones. There was no difference in prey pursuit frequency or duration between age classes, but in the hunting tactic. Females pursued more prey around and after reaching the maximum depth of dives the more experienced they were (old > middle age > young), an energy saving hunting tactic by probably taking advantage of up-thrust momentum. We suggest middle age penguins forage better than young or old ones because good physical condition and foraging experience could act simultaneously.  相似文献

Selection byTrichogramma nubilale (Ertle & Davis) for different aged egg masses ofOstrinia nubilalis (Hübner) was examined by separating components of parasitism. FemaleT. nubilale were exposed to egg masses of 2 different ages (freshly laid egg masses versus 1, 2, 3 or 4 day old egg masses), and the age of the initial egg mass inspected, number and percent of eggs and egg masses parasitized, and the emergence rate of pharate parasitoids was recorded. When there was a large difference in age between young and old egg masses, ♀♀ inspected initially more young egg masses (>2 days difference), parasitized a greater percent of young egg masses (>2 days difference), and parasitized more eggs/parasitized egg mass in young egg masses (>3 days difference) than old egg masses. Females did not discriminate between host age when hosts were similar in age. Successful emergence of parasitoids was greater from younger eggs than older eggs, although emergence was better from one-day-old eggs than from fresh eggs. These results imply that when the hosts were sufficiently different in age, ♀♀ were attracted to younger egg masses more than older egg masses, and they tended to remain ovipositing for longer periods of time on younger egg masses than older egg masses. Moreover, ♀♀ appeared to prefer to oviposit in hosts in which their young are more likely to complete development.   相似文献

Summary We studied the effects of intrinsic colony characteristics and an imposed contingency on the life span and behavior of foragers in the swarm-founding social waspPolybia occidentalis. Data were collected on marked, known-age workers introduced into four observation colonies.To test the hypothesis that colony demographic features affect worker life span, we examined the relationships of colony age and size with worker life span using survivorship analysis. Colony age and size had positive relationships with life span; marked workers from two larger, older colonies had longer life spans (¯X = 24.7 days) than those from two smaller, younger colonies (¯X = 20.1 days).We quantified the effects of experimentally imposed nest damage on forager behavior, to determine which of three predicted behavioral responses by foragers to this contingency (increased probability of foraging for building material, increased rate of foraging, or decrease in age of onset of foraging) would be employed. Increasing the colony level of need for materials used in nest construction (wood pulp and water) by damaging the nests of two colonies did not cause an increase in either the proportion of marked workers that gathered nest materials or in foraging rates of marked individuals, when compared with introduced workers in two simultaneously observed control colonies. Instead, nest damage caused a decrease in the age at which marked workers first foraged for pulp and water. The response to an increase in the need for building materials was an acceleration of behavioral development in some workers.  相似文献

Honey bee division of labor is characterized by temporal polyethism, in which young workers remain in the hive and perform tasks there, whereas old workers perform more risky outside tasks, mainly foraging. We present a model of honey bee division of labor based on (1) an intrinsic process of behavioral development and (2) inhibition of development through social interactions among the workers in a colony. The model shows that these two processes can explain the main features of honey bee temporal polyethism: the correlation between age and task performance; the age at which a worker first forages and how this age varies among hives; the balanced allocation of workers to hive tasks and foraging; the recovery of a colony from demographic perturbations; and the differentiation of workers into different behavioral roles. The model provides a baseline picture of individual and colony behavior that can serve as the basis for studies of more fine-grained regulation of division of labor.  相似文献

Two aspects of mating effects on the fecundity, sex ratio and longevity of Neoseiulus cucumeris (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were examined in laboratory experiments: (1) females mated by one, two or three different males (unmated and 3 days old) at 5-day intervals, and (2) females mated by males with different age/mating status (number of females mated previously by the male). Females allowed to mate with a second or third male at 5-day intervals produced 39 eggs on average, but those mated with a single male produced 28 eggs on average. Matings with additional males 5 or 10 days after the first male increased the duration of the oviposition period of these females by 5–7 days and at the same time reduced the post-oviposition period by about 10 days. Overall, females with additional matings by one or two different males at 5-day intervals survived a few days shorter than females without additional males. Mating with a different female each day, a male of N. cucumeris could mate with 5–8 females, which produced a total of 85–116 eggs: females mated with a male during days 1 and 2 in its adulthood and with a male of the last 2 days of life (days 7 and 8) produced about half as many eggs as females mated with a male during 3–6 days of its adulthood. Females mated with males that are too young or too old had a shorter oviposition period and a longer post-oviposition period and longevity than females mated with middle-aged males. In both experiments, rates of oviposition remained similar in females with high or low fecundity. This indicates that in both cases, the increased fecundity is due to the extension of the oviposition period through additional sperm supplied by the second male and or third male (in experiment 1) or more sperm by males not too young nor too old (experiment 2).  相似文献

We investigated the influence of the physiological state of young female Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) on resource foraging behavior and mating propensity in field cage studies. Three kinds of diets were supplied prior to release on host plants: (1) 2% sucrose, (2) 20% sucrose, and (3) protein hydrolysate. Laboratory-cultured C. capitata females of different ages, ranging between 3–9 days old, were released in field cages containing two potted citrus tree seedlings, each consisting of either proteinacous or carbohydrate sources. Flies 3–7 days old, exposed to 2% sucrose, showed no preference for either source, while other groups, at the same age, displayed a significant influence of diet. Conversely, the behavior of flies within the age 8–9 days old was governed only by their reproductive needs, all three groups being significantly attracted to protein. In additional field-cage studies, mating propensity of similar groups was observed. Copulation was significantly higher among immature flies fed on proteinacous diet than those exposed to carbohydrate sources prior to their release.  相似文献

In the present study we measured, for the first time, the isometric specific force (SF, force normalized to cross sectional area) generated by single intact fibers from fast- (extensor digitorum longus, EDL) and slow-twitch (soleus) muscles from young adult (2–6), middle-aged (12–14) and old (20–24 month-old) mice. SF has also been measured in single intact flexor digitorum brevis fibers from young mice. Muscle fibers have been classified into fast- or slow-twitch based on the contraction kinetics. Maximum SF recorded in EDL and soleus fibers from young and middle-aged mice did not differ significantly. A significant age-dependent decline in maximum SF was recorded in EDL and soleus fibers from young or middle-aged to old mice. The SF was 377 ± 18, 417 ± 20 and 279 ± 18 kPa for EDL fibers from young, middle-aged and old mice, respectively and 397 ± 17, 405 ± 24 and 320 ± 33 kPa for soleus fibers from age-matched mice, respectively. The frequency needed to elicit maximum force in EDL and soleus fibers from middle-aged to old mice did not differ significantly. In conclusion, the specific force developed by both fast and slow-twitch single intact muscle fibers declines with aging and more significantly in the former. The influence of male age on female mate preference and reproductive performance in the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi was examined, using male and female adults of varying ages (young, middle-aged and old) after a single mating. In a simultaneous choice test, females of all age class preferentially mated with middle-aged males. Mating duration was positively related to male age. Longevity of females was not significantly affected by male age. Young females paired to middle-aged males had significantly higher egg production than those paired to old males, and the eggs of females paired to middle-aged males exhibited significantly higher hatching success than the eggs of females mated to young or old males. These results suggest that middle-aged males are more advantageous for female fitness than young and old males.  相似文献

Foraging behaviour and host-instar preference of young and old females of the solitary aphid parasitoid,Lysiphlebus cardui Marshall (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), were studied in the laboratory. The analysis of interactions between parasitoids and different stages ofAphis fabae cirsiiacanthoidis Scop. (Homoptera: Aphididae) revealed that encounter rates between aphids and parasitoid females and defence reactions of the aphids influenced the degree to which a particular aphid age class is parasitized. Encounter rates between hosts and parasitoid females depended on the foraging pattern of the parasitoid, which varied with age. In mixed aphid colonies patch residence time increased with parasitoid age. Furthermore, younger parasitoids (≦1 day old) laid more eggs into second and third instars, while older parasitoids (≧4 days old) did not show distinct host instar preferences. It is suggested that the oviposition behaviour ofL. cardui is influenced by the physiological state, i.e. the age of the wasp.  相似文献

Distance between dam and offspring (1–121 days old) in a herd of Japanese Black cattle (Bos taurus) grazing a tropical grass (Paspalum notatum) pasture (1.5 ha) was investigated during 7-h grazing periods over grazing seasons from May (spring) to October (autumn). The mother–young distance was not constant throughout the grazing period, repeatedly increasing and decreasing. Although significant periodicity was always detected in the mother–young distance, there was no consistent dominant cycle, indicating the complexity of the within-day pattern of mother–young distance. The mean mother–young distance over the grazing period increased as a calf aged, reaching a plateau at an age of about 33 days. The mean distance of a calf from its mother was usually shorter than that from a non-mother cow, with the difference between the mean distances decreasing sharply until a calf became about 35 days old. The results and literature show that mutual independence of mother and young rapidly develops in the first 30–50 days after parturition. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Summary Queen power inIridomyrmex humilis during six arbitrarily chosen physiological stages of queens (virgin winged queens at the time of emergence, the same 4–5 days old, mated winged queens 5–6 days old, mated queens at the time of dealation, young egg-laying queens, and old egg-laying queens) was tested with regard to workers. Tested workers and queens were nestmates. The results were as follows. 1) Power of the old queens remained rather constant throughout the reproductive season. 2) Young queens were always less attractive than older ones. No changes were observed from the time of emergence to dealation. 3) At the time of egg-laying, these young queens became markedly attractive for workers but never as much as old egg-laying queens. Therefore, insemination and dealation do not trigger the increase in queen power. In contrast, oogenesis ending by egg-laying produces a significant increase in queen power.  相似文献

We investigated how male age and body weight influence male mating effort in the bell cricket Meloimorpha japonica. We adopted a longitudinal approach to study resource allocation to male mating effort (calling duration during 24 h) in the bell cricket. Calling durations and body weight of each male were measured at 7–8 days (young age), 14–15 days (middle age), and 22–25 days (old age) after the final molt. Calling duration increased between young and middle age. During the period between middle and old age, the amount of change in the calling duration was positively correlated with the body weight. The results suggested that older (i.e., low residual reproductive value) and better quality males invested more resources in mating effort.  相似文献

The vibration signal is one of the most commonly occurring communication displays in honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. It may function in a ‘modulatory’ manner, because it causes a nonspecific increase in activity that enhances a variety of behaviors depending upon the age and caste of the recipient. We examined honey bee workers that performed vibration signals on other workers in three observation hives, each containing a population of marked bees of known age. In all three colonies, the mean age of the first performance of the vibration signal was significantly different from the mean age at which workers first performed waggle dances, carried pollen loads, or attended the queen. However, workers of all ages, except those less than 3 d old, could perform vibration signals. In older workers of foraging age, signal performance was most closely associated with recent foraging success. Younger workers that vibrated did not appear to be early-maturing foragers and thus their signals were probably not influenced by food collection. Rather, for these preforaging-age workers, signal performance was associated more with periods of orientation flight, during which younger bees learn the location of the nest and surrounding landmarks. Thus, the vibration signal may be triggered by different stimuli in different worker age classes. Because it elicits a general increase in activity in all recipients, the signal may help adjust many different colony behaviors simultancously to changes in foraging success and colony development.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that male age can influence female mating preference and subsequent fitness consequences in many polyandrous species, yet this is seldom investigated in monandrous species. In the present study, we use the monandrous pine moth Dendrolimus punctatus to examine the effects of male age on female mating preference and future reproductive potential. In multiple male trials, when permitted free mating from an aggregation consisting of virgin males aged 0 (young), 2 (middle-aged) and 4 (old) days, virgin females preferentially mate with young and middle-aged males, although mating latency and mating duration are independent of male age. In single male trials, when virgin females are randomly assigned single virgin males of known age, a negative correlation is found between mating success and male age in this species. However, we find that male age also has no effect on mating latency and mating duration. Further fitness analysis reveals that females do not receive benefits in terms of oviposition period, total egg production, average daily egg production, percentage of egg hatching, longevity, expected reproduction and relative expected reproduction from mating with young and middle-aged males compared with mating with old males. The results of the present study are the first demonstrate that females mated preferentially with younger males but gain no apparent fitness benefits in a monandrous moth species.  相似文献

As social insect workers mature, outside-nest tasks associated with foraging and defense are typically performed at higher frequencies. Foraging in ants is often a pheromonally mediated collective action performed by mature workers; age-dependent differences in olfactory response thresholds may therefore proximately regulate task repertoire development. In the ant Pheidole dentata, foraging activity increases with chronological age in minor workers, and is chemically controlled. The onset of foraging in minor workers is accompanied by marked neuroanatomical and neurochemical changes, including synaptic remodeling in olfactory regions of the brain, proliferation of serotonergic neurons, and increased brain titers of monoamines, notably serotonin. We examined the linkage of serotonin and olfactory responsiveness by assaying trail-following performance in mature P. dentata minor workers with normal serotonin levels, or serotonin levels experimentally lowered by oral administration of the serotonin synthesis inhibitor α-methyltryptophan (AMTP). By assessing responsiveness to standardized pheromone trails, we demonstrate that trail-following behaviors are significantly reduced in serotonin-depleted workers. AMTP-treated individuals were less likely to initiate trail following, and oriented along pheromone trails for significantly shorter distances than untreated, similar-age workers. These results demonstrate for the first time that serotonin modulates olfactory processes and/or motor functions associated with cooperative foraging in ants.  相似文献

Division of labor is a strategy that maximizes the foraging and reproductive success of eusocial insects. Although some arachnids exhibit colony structure and social organization similar to that of hymenopterans, temporal polyethism has only been demonstrated in few species. The social organization of cooperative pseudoscorpions Paratemnoides nidificator is similar to that of social spiders, but it involves a clear division of labor. Work allocation was experimentally investigated in colonies composed of only one developmental stage (young or adults) or by one sex (males or females), through laboratory manipulation. During 44 h of observation, more than 14 000 behavioral repetitions were quantified, distributed in 95 different types of behavioral acts, and grouped in 10 behavioral categories. The results showed that reproductive colonies of P. nidificator are maintained by gender‐ and age‐based activities. Males and non‐reproductive females performed the external cleaning of the colony and prey capture. Reproductive females take care of the juveniles and build reproductive silk chambers. Nymphs build most of the molt chambers and perform internal cleaning. In the absence of nymphs, male colonies survived 1–2 mo, while female colonies survived 3–4 mo. In nymph colonies, work is readjusted so that all maintenance tasks are executed. This is the first study clearly demonstrating division of tasks in arachnids. It suggests that specialization is an adaptative and evolutionarily old trait in this species. Unlike cooperative spiders, P. nidificator possesses physiological (e.g. reproduction, ecdysis, lifespan) and behavioral (e.g. behavioral synchrony or self‐organization) characteristics that allow task specialization.  相似文献

The parameters of bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) were studied in suspensions of young and old erythrocytes. The separation of erythrocytes according to age in a density gradient was performed. The BIS parameters, including the extracellular (Re) and intracellular (Ri) fluid resistances, characteristic frequency (Fchar), cell membranes’ capacitance (Cm), and the Alpha parameter of concentrated suspensions of young and old erythrocytes (n = 6) were measured using an ABC-01 Medass bioimpedance analyzer in the frequency range 5–500 kHz. Re (300.4 ± 30.0 and 261.2 ± 21.8 Ω in old and young erythrocytes, respectively, p < 0.05), Ri (86.6 ± 9.1 Ω and 73.4 ± 7.3 Ω in old and young erythrocytes, respectively, p < 0.001), and Alpha (0.305 ± 0.003 and 0.302 ± 0.001 in old and young erythrocytes respectively, p < 0.05) were greater in the suspension of old erythrocytes than in the suspension of young erythrocytes; and Fchar (308.3 ± 42.0 kHz and 347.4 ± 48.0 kHz in old and young erythrocytes, respectively, p < 0.05) and Cm (99.3 ± 10.1 pF and 112.8 ± 6.3 pF in old and young erythrocytes, respectively, p < 0.01) were less in the suspension of old erythrocytes than in the suspension of young erythrocytes. These differences between the BIS parameters of old and young erythrocytes were possibly due to the structural change in erythrocytes during aging (an increase in the concentration of intracellular hemoglobin, the change in the shape of the erythrocyte, their converging due to the decrease in cellular negative surface charge, and an increase in membrane permeability to ions). Thus, the BIS parameters depend on the erythrocyte age composition.  相似文献

Trace elements such as Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and selenium (Se) are essential for male fertility. The fertilizing capacity of most animals reduced with advancing age. The objective of the present work was to determine the serum and testicular levels of Zn, Cu, and Se in young (10 months old) and old (30 months old) rabbits. Blood and testicular samples were obtained from rabbits after their slaughter. All samples were digested by concentrated acids and analyzed for trace elements by flame emission atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results showed that serum Zn and Cu were lower in old rabbits than young (P < 0.01). Serum Se was higher in old than young rabbits (P < 0.05). Testicular Cu and Se were significantly lower in old than young rabbits (P < 0.01). However, Zn level was higher in old compared to young rabbits (P < 0.01). The serum Zn and Se were higher than the testicular levels (P < 0.01). The testicular Cu in both ages was higher than the serum level (P < 0.01), which suggest a very important role for Cu in the process of spermatogenesis in rabbits.  相似文献

Cannibalism is a behavioral trait seen in a number of species and can be favored when the fitness gain outweighs the cost. In social wasps, field studies have suggested that food limitation causes larval cannibalism as a compensation of a meal for adult wasp and/or earlier production of the first workers, but experimental studies for the effect of food availability on larval cannibalism have been very scarce. Hence we examined whether Polistes chinensis antennalis foundresses exhibit a higher level of larval cannibalization under food-limited conditions than under food-available conditions. Larval cannibalization occurred frequently under both prey- and honey-limited conditions; however, young larvae were more frequently cannibalized than old larvae in the prey-limited colonies, while old larvae were more frequently cannibalized than young larvae in the honey-limited colonies. The number of days between colony initiation and the emergence of the first workers was not significantly different between the prey-limited and prey-available colonies, suggesting that under prey-limited conditions P. chinensis antennalis foundresses tend to cannibalize their young larvae and feed probably the flesh of these cannibalized larvae to old larvae in order to ensure the rapid production of the first workers. On the other hand, the number of days between colony initiation and the emergence of the first workers was longer in the honey-limited colonies than in the honey-available colonies. We propose explanations for the first time for why the foundresses in the honey-limited conditions cannibalized their old larvae more frequently than their young larvae in spite of this resulting in the delayed emergence of the first workers.  相似文献

The vibration signal of the honey bee (Apis mellifera) may play a central role in the regulation of queen behavior during reproductive swarming and supersedure. We examined honey bee workers that performed vibration signals on queens and developing queen cells in three observation hives, each containing a population of marked bees of known age. In all three colonies, workers of all ages greater than 2 d old could perform vibration signals on queens and queen cells. However, most signals were performed by a small proportion of the bees of greater than 10 d of age. Relatively few workers less than 10 d old vibrated queens and queen cells, even though this age-group is typically associated with queen care. Thus, the regulation of queen behavior by the vibration signal may occur primarily through a relatively small subset of older workers that, under most circumstances, have only limited involvement with queens. It is unclear what triggers the vibrating of queens. Workers producing vibration signals did not differ from same-age non-vibrating controls in rate of locomotion in the hive or in task performance, and they rarely engaged in foraging, even though the majority of observed bees were of foraging age; vibrators also did not spend more time with queens and queen cells compared with controls. Vibration signals performed on queens and queen cells therefore do not appear to be influenced by task performance or increased contact with queens.  相似文献
