Pikeperch and perch perform seasonal migrations between the Curonian Lagoon and the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. The Curonian Lagoon is a freshwater basin, while salinity in the coastal waters varies between of 4.9–6.8 psu. In the Curonian Lagoon water temperature is generally higher than in the coastal waters. Field studies of growth and condition characteristics of pikeperch and perch were carried out in these water bodies with the aim to estimate growth differences of the two fish species under different salinity and temperature conditions. Additionally, an experimental study of the impact of salinity on the growth of perch young-of-the-year (YOY) was performed to test the hypothesis that a brackish environment positively influences percids. Field observations revealed that body length, condition factor, fatness coefficient and fat content in muscles were significantly higher in individuals inhabiting the cooler, brackish waters of the Baltic Sea than in individuals inhabiting the Curonian Lagoon. A positive effect of low salinity on growth was also established in the experimental study. Hence, the study results suggest that under certain temperature conditions, brackish waters beneficially affect the growth of pikeperch and perch.  相似文献

Concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters of sub-humid to semi-arid lakes in east-central Alberta increase with increasing salinity and water residence time from about 20 to 330 mg L–1 as dissolved organic carbon (DOC). This pattern is opposite to that observed among freshwater lakes spanning a gradient in water residence times, and is probably caused by evaporative concentration of refractory DOM. The proportion of total DOC, operationally defined as humic substances using XAD-8 resin, was high, though similar to surface waters typically referred to as "humic", and independent of salinity. Very long water residence times (hundreds of years) in saline lakes favors evapoconcentration of low-color, low molecular weight DOM, with N-content characteristic of allochthonous DOM.  相似文献

Microbiological, biogeochemical, and isotope geochemical investigations of the upper sediments of the Vistula and Curonian lagoons, Baltic Sea, were carried out. High content of organic matter in the sediments was responsible for the high numbers (over 1010 cells cm?3) and activity of heterotrophic microorganisms. The calculated integral rates of dark CO2 assimilation for the upper 30 cm of the sediments varied 12.5 to 38.8 mmol m?2 day?1 and were somewhat higher in the Curonian Lagoon than in the Vistula Lagoon. Integral rates of sulfate reduction were higher in the more saline Vistula Lagoon. Rapid consumption of sulfates of the pore water resulted in intensified methanogenesis, with significantly higher rates detected in the silts of the Curonian Lagoon. High rates of methanogenesis in the Curonian Lagoon correlated with higher methane levels in its upper sediments and near-bottom water. The highest rates of methane oxidation were detected in the uppermost sediment horizons (oxidized or slightly reduced), which was an indication of the barrier role of aerobic methanotrophic bacteria. The calculated methane flows from the sediments into the water column were 0.45 and 0.007 mmol m?2 day?1 for the Vistula and Curonian Lagoons, respectively. Low methane flow from the sediments of the Curonian Lagoon resulted probably from the specific weather (wind) conditions during sampling. The near-stormy conditions in the Curonian Lagoon caused sediment detachment, resulting in methane release into the water column.  相似文献

Based on an analysis of long-term (1991–2007) hydrological and hydrochemical data, as well as data on phytoplankton primary production, the ecological state of the Curonian and Vistula Lagoons of the Baltic Sea is assessed. The main abiotic factors influencing the trophic status of the lagoons are indicated. Water temperature is the key factor determining phytoplankton production and abundance in the Curonian Lagoon. An intensive warming-up of the lagoon water in the 1990s and 2000s (a possible result of climate warming) combined with freshwater and a slow-flow velocity created the conditions for the mass development of bluegreen algae. Despite a significant reduction in the external nutrients load, the occurrences of water hyperblooms” become more frequent, which points to a continuation of the eutrophication processes in the lagoon. The biological productivity of the Vistula Lagoon is below the potentially possible level because hydrodynamic activity and brackish water prevent the intensive development of blue-green algae. The increase in water temperature in the 1990s and 2000s had no significant effect on the ecological state of the lagoon.  相似文献

The status of twaite shad was investigated within the Southern Baltic Sea (ICES subdivision 22–27) and transitional area between the Baltic and North Seas (division IIIa). The following sources of data were analysed: (i) commercial catch statistics and relevant publications, (ii) records from ichthyological museum collections, (iii) records from recent commercial and recreational fisheries, (iv) research fisheries with trawls. A total of 476 records of twaite shad including more than 16 million individuals were obtained for the time between the years 1836 and 2005. About 72.9% of all records originated from commercial catch statistics and publications, whereas 18.9% were received from ichthyological collections. Research fisheries provided 6.3%, and 1.9% of the records were obtained from recent commercial and recreational fisheries. Most records of twaite shad were estimated for subdivisions 24 (45.2%) and 26 (35.5%). From 1836 to 1959, 29.6% of the records date from the period until 1899. 70.4% of the records of twaite shad originate from the twentieth century until 1959. The mean annual catch of twaite shad between 1891 and 1959 amounted to 86,674 kg within subdivisions 24–26 of the Southern Baltic Sea. Catch data show an approximately 20-year-cyclicity of maximum yields and minimum catches, respectively. The maximum annual yield of twaite shad in subdivisions 24–26 (474,700 kg) was registered in 1940, the minimum annual yield was estimated in 1958 (10 kg). In the 1950s, the annual catches of twaite shad declined sharply. Until 1960 twaite shad catches and records originated mainly from the Pommeranian Bay/Pommeranian Coast and adjacent waters including the Szczecin Lagoon (subdivision 24), the Bay of Gdańsk, Vistula Lagoon and Vistula Spit (subdivision 26) and from the Curonian Lagoon and Curonian Spit (subdivision 26). The highest catches of twaite shad originated from the area of Curonian Lagoon/Curonian Spit from 1941 to 1960. Seasonal catches of twaite shad showed maximum values from May to July. From 1960 to 1989, only four records of A. fallax were registered in the Southern Baltic Sea which originated from German coastal waters in subdivisions 22 and 24. A total of 107 records of twaite shad was obtained in subdivisions 20–27 from 1990 to 2005. Most of these recent records originate from a twaite-shad stock in subdivisions 24, 25 and 26. There are indications which suggest a separate stock of twaite shad in subdivisions 20 and 21. Disappearance and recovery of twaite shad stocks were probably caused by the following factors: construction of barriers in rivers with spawning sites of twaite shad; habitat destruction in those rivers as consequence of gravel extraction and reengineering scheme to improve navigation and for flood defence purposes, water pollution in the lagoons of the Southern Baltic and in their tributaries, commercial fishery in the Southern Baltic and climatic variation in the Baltic Sea basin south of the latitude of 60° N. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) are important energy and nutrient sources for aquatic ecosystems. In many northern temperate, freshwater systems DOC has increased in the past 50 years. Less is known about how changes in DOC may vary across latitudes, and whether changes in DON track those of DOC. Here, we present long-term DOC and DON data from 74 streams distributed across seven sites in biomes ranging from the tropics to northern boreal forests with varying histories of atmospheric acid deposition. For each stream, we examined the temporal trends of DOC and DON concentrations and DOC:DON molar ratios. While some sites displayed consistent positive or negative trends in stream DOC and DON concentrations, changes in direction or magnitude were inconsistent at regional or local scales. DON trends did not always track those of DOC, though DOC:DON ratios increased over time for ~30% of streams. Our results indicate that the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool is experiencing fundamental changes due to the recovery from atmospheric acid deposition. Changes in DOC:DON stoichiometry point to a shifting energy-nutrient balance in many aquatic ecosystems. Sustained changes in the character of DOM can have major implications for stream metabolism, biogeochemical processes, food webs, and drinking water quality (including disinfection by-products). Understanding regional and global variation in DOC and DON concentrations is important for developing realistic models and watershed management protocols to effectively target mitigation efforts aimed at bringing DOM flux and nutrient enrichment under control.  相似文献

In the Vistula and Curonian lagoons, respectively, 7 and 9 taxa of under-ice zooplankton have been recorded. Copepoda and rotifera were dominant. Throughout the year, the complex of dominant species was generally constant in the Vistula Lagoon and changed considerably in the Curonian Lagoon. The zooplankton accumulation was found in the surface layer in the Curonian Lagoon, which was due to favorable oxygen conditions and phytoplankton accumulation under the ice.  相似文献

Otolith Sr:Ca ratios were examined to evaluate the contribution of the stocked eel Anguilla anguilla elvers, which have been stocked in Lithuanian waters and mixed with naturally recruited eels for several decades, to the native eel population. Stocked eels were identified by the freshwater signature (Sr:Ca ratios <2·24 × 10−3) on the otolith after the glass eel stage. Naturally recruited eels, that had migrated through the North and Baltic Seas, were characterized by an extended seawater and brackish-water signature (Sr:Ca ratios >3·23 × 10−3) after the glass eel stage. Of 108 eels analysed, 21 eels had otolith Sr:Ca ratio profiles consistent with stocking while 87 showed patterns of natural recruitment. The ages of naturally recruited eels arriving in Lithuanian fresh waters varied from 1 to 10 years, with a mean ±  s.d . age of 5·2 ± 2·1 years. Eels from the inland Lake Baluošai were all freshwater residents of stocked origin. Stocked eels, however, accounted for only 20% of the eels from the Curonian Lagoon and 2% of eels sampled in Baltic coastal waters. This finding does not support the hypothesis that the eel fishery in the Curonian Lagoon depends mostly on stocking.  相似文献

Utilization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is thought to be the purview of heterotrophic microorganisms, but photoautotrophs can take up dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). This study investigated DOC and DON uptake in a laminated cyanobacterial mat community from hypersaline Salt Pond (San Salvador, Bahamas). The total community uptake of (3)H-labeled substrates was measured in the light and in the dark and under conditions of high and low salinity. Salinity was the primary control of DOM uptake, with increased uptake occurring under low-salinity, 'freshened' conditions. DOC uptake was also enhanced in the light as compared with the dark and in samples incubated with the photosystem II inhibitor 3(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea, suggesting a positive association between photosynthetic activity and DOC uptake. Microautoradiography revealed that some DOM uptake was attributed to cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria DOM uptake was negatively correlated with that of smaller filamentous microorganisms, and DOM uptake by individual coccoid cells was negatively correlated with uptake by colonial coccoids. These patterns of activity suggest that Salt Pond microorganisms are engaged in resource partitioning, and DOM utilization may provide a metabolic boost to both heterotrophs and photoautrophs during periods of lowered salinity.  相似文献

The main differences between the linear and areal types of littoral habitats are in their shape, structure and the hydro- and litho-dynamic, salinity and ecological gradients between terrestrial and aquatic environments. Understanding the nature of linear littoral habitats is important for interpreting the ??coastal squeeze?? effect. The aim of this study is to analyse and compare the integrity of the key linear littoral habitats adjacent to two European lagoons??Lesina Lagoon on the Adriatic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon on the Baltic Sea. Among the four linear habitats selected for this study, we found that the glasswort (Salicornia spp.) swards showed the highest level of integrity, while the reed beds showed the lowest level of integrity. The linear littoral habitats rely on the dynamic equilibrium conditions. Hence, the strip of glasswort swards and the freshwater dune slack ponds of Bosco Isola di Lesina both depend upon climatic conditions that determine the shape of the salinity gradient. This gradient runs perpendicular to the coast and is based on a transition from fresh groundwater to saline water. The chain of shifting coastal dunes and the reed beds of the Curonian Spit depend upon the long-shore hydro- and litho-dynamic flow conditions.  相似文献

Actinobacteria are highly abundant in pelagic freshwater habitats and also occur in estuarine environments such as the Baltic Sea. Because of gradients in salinity and other environmental variables estuaries offer natural systems for examining factors that determine Actinobacteria distribution. We studied abundance and community structure of Bacteria and Actinobacteria along two transects in the northern Baltic Sea. Quantitative (CARD-FISH) and qualitative (DGGE and clone libraries) analyses of community composition were compared with environmental parameters. Actinobacteria accounted for 22–27% of all bacteria and the abundance changed with temperature. Analysis of 549 actinobacterial 16S rRNA sequences from four clone libraries revealed a dominance of the freshwater clusters ac I and ac IV, and two new subclusters ( ac I-B scB-5 and ac IV-E) were assigned. Whereas ac I was present at all stations, occurrence of ac II and ac IV differed between stations and was related to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chlorophyll a (Chl a ) respectively. The prevalence of the ac I-A and ac I-B subclusters changed in relation to total phosphorus (Tot-P) and Chl a respectively. Community structure of Bacteria and Actinobacteria differed between the river station and all other stations, responding to differences in DOC, Chl a and bacterial production. In contrast, the composition of active Actinobacteria (analysis based on reversely transcribed RNA) changed in relation to salinity and Tot-P. Our study suggests an important ecological role of Actinobacteria in the brackish northern Baltic Sea. It highlights the need to address dynamics at the cluster or subcluster phylogenetic levels to gain insights into the factors regulating distribution and composition of Actinobacteria in aquatic environments.  相似文献

Hydraulic regime-based zonation scheme of the Curonian Lagoon   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The aim of this study was to delineate the spatial zonation of the Curonian Lagoon based on the hydraulic regime and the sediment characteristics. A finite element hydrodynamic model has been applied to the Curonian Lagoon to simulate the circulation patterns for three years. With the help of a transport diffusion model the salinity distribution and the residence times of the Curonian Lagoon have been investigated when forced by river runoff and by wind. The finite element method permitted to follow the details of bathymetry and morphology of the lagoon, describing the areas of special interest with higher resolution. The hydrodynamic model has been validated using in situ water level and salinity measurements. A statistical GIS analysis of the bottom sediment characteristics and the modeled residence times and salinity distribution led to a synthetic hydraulic regime-based zonation scheme. The derived classification scheme is of crucial value for understanding the renewal capacity and biota distribution patterns in the lagoon. Guest editors: A. Razinkovas, Z. R. Gasiūnaitė, J. M. A study was undertaken to examine the activity and composition of the seasonal Baltic Sea land-fast sea-ice biota along a salinity gradient in March 2003 in a coastal location in the SW coast of Finland. Using a multi-variable data set, the less well-known algal and protozoan communities, and algal and bacterial production in relation to the physical and chemical environment were investigated. Also, the first coincident measurements of bacterial production and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a sea-ice system are reported. Communities in sea ice were clearly autotrophy-dominated with algal biomass representing 79% of the total biomass. Protozoa and rotifers made up 18% of biomass in the ice and bacteria only 3%. Highest biomasses were found in mid-transect bottom ice. Water column assemblages were clearly more heterotrophic: 39% algae, 12% bacteria and 49% for rotifers and protozoa. Few significant correlations existed between DOM and bacterial variables, reflecting the complex origin of ice DOM. Dynamics of dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus (DOC, DON and DOP) were also uncoupled. A functional microbial loop is likely to be present in the studied ice. Existence of an under-ice freshwater plume affects the ecosystem functioning: Under-ice water communities are influenced directly by river-water mixing, whereas the ice system seems to be more independent—the interaction mainly taking place through the formation of active bottom communities.  相似文献

The Yenisei river passes every type of permafrost regime, from south to north, being characterized by increasing continuity of the permafrost and by decreasing thickness of the active layer. We used that situation to test the hypothesis that amounts and properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in small streams draining forested catchments respond to different permafrost regimes. Water samples were taken from eight tributaries along the Yenisei between 67°30′N and 65°49′N latitude. The samples were analysed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) and DOM was characterized by its chemical composition (XAD‐8 fractionation, sugars, lignin phenols, amino acids, protein, UV and fluorescence spectroscopy), and its biodegradability. Most properties of the tributary waters varied depending on latitude. The higher the latitude, the higher were DOC, DON and the proportion of the hydrophobic fraction of DOC. The contribution of hexoses and pentoses to DOC were higher in southern tributaries; on the other hand, phenolic compounds were more abundant in northern tributaries. Mineralizable DOC ranged between 4% and 28% of total DOC. DOM in northern tributaries was significantly (P<0.05) less biodegradable than that in southern tributaries reflecting the differences in the chemical properties of DOM. Our results suggest that the differences in DOM properties are mainly attributed to differences of permafrost regime, affecting depth of active layer, soil organic matter accumulation and vegetation. Soil organic matter and vegetation determine the amount and composition of DOM produced in the catchments while the depth of the active layer likely controls the quantity and quality of DOM exported to streams. Sorptive interactions of DOM with the soil mineral phase typically increase with depth. The results imply that a northern shift of discontinuous permafrost likely will change in the long term the input of DOM into the Yenisei and thus probably into the Kara Sea.  相似文献

Peatlands are important contributors of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to downstream aquatic systems. We investigated the effects of storm events on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and DOM quality in a stream draining a Welsh peatland catchment. Intensive stream samples were collected and analysed for pH, DOC, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), absorbance and fluorescence. Soil water samples and samples of sphagnum pore water were also collected, and a simple end-member mixing model was applied to account for changes occurring during the events. Fluorescence data were interpreted using parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). DOC concentrations increased and pH decreased during the storm events. The soil water data and the mixing model indicated that this was due to a change of flow paths and draining of the DOC-rich acrotelm. Absorbance indices and the DOC/DON ratio suggested that the DOM released during events was less degraded. There was a striking, inversely related diurnal pattern in absorbance and fluorescence after the discharge peak. The diurnal pattern and a lack of fit with the mixing model suggested that fluorescing DOM was mainly produced in-stream. Fluorescence has been found to peak in the morning and decline during day-time due to photo-bleaching. We hypothesise that the input of additional DOM during events causes a change in the diurnal pattern, giving a peak at mid-day, when the processing of the additional DOM is highest.  相似文献

The characteristics of parasitofauna (81 species) of 15 fish species from Vistula Lagoon (the Baltic Sea) are given. Parasites with a direct developmental cycle dominate. Parasites with a complicated developmental cycle are represented mainly by species developed through zoobenthos. Some of the parasites testify to the deterioration of the ecological state of the lagoon. A zoogeographic analysis of fish parasitofauna has shown the presence of five faunistic complexes. In Vistula Lagoon freshwater species dominate, but marine species are also recorded. Species that appeared in the lagoon as a result of human commercial activity are also registered.  相似文献

Based upon the results of long-term monitoring of zooplankton in the Curonian and Vistula estuaries carried out by the author, specific features of the structure and functioning of the zooplankton communities are studied. It is shown that the zooplankton communities in the open (Vistula Bay) and closed (Curonina Bay) types of estuaries differ in the species structures, numbers, biomasses, and functioning. The similarity of the zooplankton communities of these estuaries has to do with the commonness of their trophic structure. The zooplankton community in the Vistula estuary is more affected by the gradient of abiotic factors than the Curonian bay community. The mechanism providing the stability of the zooplankton communities in the open-type estuaries is the energy flow through the omnivorous species and the increase in the number of facultative predators at the terminal links of the trophic chain. It is shown that the Vistula estuary zooplankton community has a higher specific productivity rate and a higher rate of its circulation and use.  相似文献

Ice cores were collected between 10.03.93 and 15.03.93 along a 200 m profile on a large ice floe in Fram Strait. The ice was typical of Arctic multi-year ice, having a mean thickness along the profile of 2.56 ±0.53 m. It consisted mostly of columnar ice (83%) grown through congelation of seawater at the ice bottom, and the salinity profiles were characterized by a linear increase from 0 psu at the top to values ranging between 3 and 5 psu at depth. Distributions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) and major nutrients were compared with ice texture, salinity and chlorophyll a. DOC, DON, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), NH4 + and NO2 were present in concentrations in excess of that predicted by dilution curves derived from Arctic surface water values. Only NO3 was depleted, although not exhausted. High DOC and DON values in conjunction with high NH4 + levels indicated that a significant proportion of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) was a result of decomposition/grazing of ice algae and/or detritus. The combination of high NH4 + and NO2 points to regeneration of nitrogen compounds. There was no significant correlation between DOC and Chl a in contrast to DON, which had a positively significant correlation with both salinity and Chl a, and the distribution of DOM in the cores might best be described as a combination of both physical and biological processes. There was no correlation between DOC and DON suggesting an uncoupling of DOC and DON dynamics in multi year ice.  相似文献

Patterns of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) delivery were compared between times of stormflow and baseflow in Paine Run, an Appalachian stream draining a 12.4 km2 forested catchment in the Shenandoah National Park (SNP), Virginia. The potential in-stream ecological impact of altered concentrations and/or chemical composition of DOM during storms also was examined, using standardized bacterial bioassays. DOC and DON concentrations in Paine Run were consistently low during baseflow and did not show a seasonal pattern. During storms however, mean DOC and DON concentrations approximately doubled, with maximum concentrations occurring on the rising limb of storm hydrographs. The rapid response of DOM concentration to changes in flow suggests a near-stream or in-stream source of DOM during storms. Stormflow (4% of the time, 36% of the annual discharge) contributed >50% of DOC, DON and NO3 flux in Paine Run during 1997. In laboratory bacterial bioassays, growth rate constants were higher on Paine Run stormflow water than on baseflow water, but the fraction of total DOM which was bioavailable was not significantly different. The fraction of the total stream DOC pool taken up by water column bacteria was estimated to increase from 0.03 ± 0.02% h–1 during baseflow, to 0.15 ± 0.04% h–1 during storms. This uptake rate would have a minimal effect on bulk DOM concentrations in Paine Run, but storms may still have considerable impact on the bacterial stream communities by mobilizing them into the water column and by supplying a pulse of DOM.  相似文献

An increase in the concentration of riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been observed during the last decades, and this material can stimulate marine plankton in coastal waters with significant freshwater input. We studied the effect of two size fractions of riverine high molecular weight dissolved organic matter (HMW DOM), isolated with tangential ultrafiltration, on the harmful dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum and a natural isolate of marine bacteria under laboratory conditions. Both A. minutum and bacteria grew significantly better with the low MW DOM compared to both the high MW DOM fraction and controls (no DOM additions). This experiment demonstrates that the harmful algae A. minutum and bacteria benefit from larger molecules of river HMW DOM, and highlights the potential of A. minutum to utilize organic nitrogen from large DOM molecules. This ability may enhance their likelihood of success in estuaries/costal waters with a humic rich freshwater input, especially when the relative amount of large molecules within DOM is more pronounced.  相似文献
