The effects of nitrogen (N) supply restriction on the CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) function of flag leaves were compared between two contrastive Japanese rice cultivars, a low-yield cultivar released one century ago, cv. Shirobeniya (SRB), and a recently improved high-yield cultivar, cv. Akenohoshi (AKN). Both cultivars were solution-cultured at four N supply levels from N4 (control) to N1 (the lowest). With a reduction in N-supply, contents of N (LNC), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO), and chlorophyll (Chl) in flag leaves decreased in both cultivars. In parallel with this, the net photosynthetic rate (P N), mesophyll conductance (g m), and stomatal conductance (g s) decreased. P N was more dominantly restricted by g m than g s. The values of P N, g m, and RuBPCO content were larger in AKN than SRB at the four N supply levels. The content of Chl greatly decreased with N deficiency, but the reduction in the maximum quantum yield of PS2 was relatively small. Quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2) decreased with N deficiency, and its significant cultivar difference was observed between the two cultivars at N1: a high value was found in AKN. The content ratio of Chl/RuBPCO was also significantly low in AKN. The low Chl/RuBPCO is one of the reasons why AKN maintained a comparatively high P N and ΦPS2 at N deficiency. The adequate ratio of N distribution between Chl and RuBPCO is the important prerequisite for the efficient and sustainable photosynthesis in a flag leaf of rice plant under low N-input.  相似文献

Photosynthesis, photorespiration, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence in green and red Berberis thunbergii leaves were studied with two different measuring radiations, red (RR) and “white” (WR). The photosynthetic and photorespiration rates responded differently to the different radiation qualities, which indicate that the carboxylase and oxygenase activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) were affected. Differences in photosynthetic rate between the two color leaves were less under RR than under WR. However, this reduced difference in photosynthetic rate was not correlated with the stomatal response to the measuring radiation qualities. Compared with the WR, the RR reduced the differences in dark-adapted minimum and maximum fluorescence, steady-state fluorescence, light-adapted maximum fluorescence, and actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPS2) of photosystem 2 (PS2), but enlarged the difference in non-photochemical quenching between the two color leaves. Differences in both maximum quantum yield of PS2 and ratio of ΦPS2 to quantum yield of CO2 fixation between the two color leaves were similar under the two measuring radiations. To exclude disturbance of radiation attenuation caused by anthocyanins, it is better to use RR to compare the photosynthesis and Chl fluorescence in green versus red leaves.  相似文献

In comparison with its wild type (WT), the transgenic (TG) rice with silenced OsBP-73 gene had significantly lower plant height, grain number per panicle, and leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N). Also, the TG rice showed significantly lower chlorophyll (Chl), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO), RuBPCO activase, and RuBP contents, photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm and ΔF/Fm′), apparent quantum yield of carbon assimilation (Φc), carboxylation efficiency (CE), photosynthetic electron transport and photophosphorylation rates as well as sucrose phosphate synthase activity, but higher intercellular CO2 concentration, sucrose, fructose, and glycerate 3-phosphate contents, and non-photochemical quenching of Chl fluorescence (NPQ). Thus the decreased P N in the TG rice leaves is related to both RuBP carboxylation and RuBP regeneration limitations, and the latter is a predominant limitation to photosynthesis.  相似文献

Uniculm wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown to maturity at four concentrations of nitrogen corresponding to 3 (N1), 6 (N2), 9 (N3) and 12 (N4) g m–2. Penultimate and flag leaves were examined throughout the ontogeny. Sub-optimal concentrations of N resulted in sharp decline in both area and dry mass of the leaves. Decline in leaf area was due to fewer mesophyll cells. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) increased up to full expansion, remained constant for about a week and then declined. PN, nitrogen, ribulose-1,5-bis-phosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) amount and activity, chlorophyll and soluble protein contents were similar at all the N concentrations. Both amount and activity of RuBPCO in the flag leaf were about two fold higher as compared to penultimate leaf, but PN was similar. This indicates the presence of an excess amount of RuBPCO in the flag leaf.  相似文献

The effects of elevated growth temperature (ambient + 3.5°C) and CO2 (700 μmol mol−1) on leaf photosynthesis, pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence of a boreal perennial grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) under different water regimes (well watered to water shortage) were investigated. Layer-specific measurements were conducted on the top (younger leaf) and low (older leaf) canopy positions of the plants after anthesis. During the early development stages, elevated temperature enhanced the maximum rate of photosynthesis (P max) of the top layer leaves and the aboveground biomass, which resulted in earlier senescence and lower photosynthesis and biomass at the later periods. At the stage of plant maturity, the content of chlorophyll (Chl), leaf nitrogen (NL), and light response of effective photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII) and electron transport rate (ETR) was significantly lower under elevated temperature than ambient temperature in leaves at both layers. CO2 enrichment enhanced the photosynthesis but led to a decline of NL and Chl content, as well as lower fluorescence parameters of ΦPSII and ETR in leaves at both layers. In addition, the down-regulation by CO2 elevation was significant at the low canopy position. Regardless of climate treatment, the water shortage had a strongly negative effect on the photosynthesis, biomass growth, and fluorescence parameters, particularly in the leaves from the low canopy position. Elevated temperature exacerbated the impact of water shortage, while CO2 enrichment slightly alleviated the drought-induced adverse effects on P max. We suggest that the light response of ΦPSII and ETR, being more sensitive to leaf-age classes, reflect the photosynthetic responses to climatic treatments and drought stress better than the fluorescence parameters under dark adaptation.  相似文献

Broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) is one of the important C4 crops in the semiarid regions of northern China. It is a close relative of biofuel crop switchgrass. Yet, there is no information on how these crops might respond to a climate change in China. In order to gain insight into such a response, we studied the effect of elevated CO2 concentration (EC) on broomcorn millet. The changes in leaf photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, morphological parameters, biomass and yield in response to EC [i.e., + 200 µmol(CO2) mol?1] over two years were determined at the open-top chamber (OTC) experimental facility in north China. EC increased net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, transpiration rate, instantaneous transpiration efficiency, effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, and photochemical quenching coefficient of fully expanded flag leaves. Maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry declined under EC in 2013, but was not affected in 2014. EC significantly decreased intrinsic efficiency of PSII in 2013, but increased in 2014. Leaf nonphotochemical quenching decreased under EC both in 2013 and 2014. EC significantly enhanced the aboveground biomass and yield by average of 31.4 and 25.5% in both years, respectively. The increased yield of broomcorn millet under EC occurred due to the enhanced number of grains per plant. We concluded that photosynthesis of broomcorn millets was improved through increased stomatal conductance in leaves under EC, which led to an increase in height, stem diameter, aboveground biomass, and yield. This study extends our understanding of the response of this ancient C4 crop to elevated CO2 concentration.  相似文献

Gas exchanges, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and carboxylation activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) were determined in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits picked at different developmental stages (immature, red-turning, mature, and over-ripe). The fruits did not show signs of CO2 fixation. However, photochemical activity was detectable and an effective electron transport was observed, the values of Chl fluorescence parameters in green fruits being similar to those determined in the leaves. The RuBPCO activity, which was similar to those recorded in the leaves at the immature stage of the fruit, decreased as the fruit ripened. PEPC activity was always higher than RuBPCO activity.  相似文献

The effect of elevated CO2 concentration (CE) on leaf chlorophyll (Chl) and nitrogen (N) contents and photosynthetic rate (PN) was evaluated during the post-flowering stages of rice grown at CE (570 ± 50 μmol mol−1) in open top chamber (OTC), at ambient CO2 concentration (∼ 365 μmol mol−1) in OTC and at open field. Thirty-five day old seedlings were transplanted in OTCs or in field and allowed to grow till maturity. Chl and N contents were highest at the time of flowering and thereafter it started to decline. The rate of decline in Chl and N contents was faster in plants grown under CE mostly in later part of growth. Irrespective of treatment difference, flag leaf contained the highest amount of Chl and N than penultimate and third leaf. The higher PN was observed in leaves under CE than in the leaves in other two growing conditions. Considering growth stage, PN was the highest at flowering which reduced at the later part of growth due to degradation of Chl and N content of the leaf. Under CE it was 40.02 μmol m−2 s−1 at flowering and it reduced to only 14.77 μmol m−2 s−1 at maturity stage. The beneficial effect of CE in increasing leaf PN may be maintained by applying extra dose of nitrogen at the later stages of plant growth.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N) measured at the same CO2 concentration, the maximum in vivo carboxylation rate, and contents of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) and RuBPCO activase were significantly decreased, but the maximum in vivo electron transport rate and RuBP content had no significant change in CO2-enriched [EC, about 200 μmol mol−1 above the ambient CO2 concentration (AC)] wheat leaves compared with those in AC grown wheat leaves. Hence photosynthetic acclimation in wheat leaves to EC is largely due to RuBP carboxylation limitation.  相似文献

The photosynthetic performance and related leaf traits of Incarvillea delavayi Bur. et Franch were studied at different water regimes to assess its capacity for photosynthetic acclimation to water stress. The initial response of I. delavayi to water stress was the closure of stomata, which resulted in down-regulation of photosynthesis. The stomatal limitation (SL) represented the main component to photosynthetic limitations but non-stomatal limitation (NSL) increased quickly with the increasing water stress, and had similar magnitude to SL under severe water stress (soil moisture 25–30 % of field capacity). Chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence parameters characterizing photosystem (PS) 2 photochemical efficiency (ΦPS2), electron transport rate (J) and photochemical quenching (qP) decreased with the increasing water stress, indicating impaired photosynthetic apparatus. However, the water-stressed plants had a increased mesophyll CO2 diffusional conductance, Chl a/b ratio, leaf nitrogen partitioning in RuBPCO and bioenergetics in later grown parts, indicating that I. delavay had a substantial physiological plasticity and showed a good tolerance to water stress.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature, singly and in combination, on grain yield and the distribution of nitrogen (N) in different rice organs. The rice ‘Wuyunjing 23’ was planted under four treatments: ambient CO2 and temperature (ACT), elevated CO2 (200 μmol mol?1 higher than ambient CO2) (EC), elevated temperature (1 °C above the ambient temperature) (ET), and the combination of elevated CO2 and temperature (ECT) under T-FACE (temperature and CO2 free air controlled enrichment) system. CO2-induced increment and temperature-induced reduction in grain yield was 6.0 and 25.2% in 2013, and that was 9.8 and 10.8% in 2014, respectively. Dry matter (DM) production in different organs increased under EC at vegetative stage but decreased under ET at reproductive stage. The negative effects of temperature on grain yield and DM was weakened when combined with CO2 enrichment. And the trends of decrease for yield and DM under ET and ECT in 2013 were more obvious than those in 2014 due to the annual temperature differences. Furthermore, ET led to greater distribution of N in root and stem but not for panicle than that under ACT. These mainly demonstrated that the rice production would be suffered varying degree of loss under global warming in future although the CO2 enrichment could alleviate the effects of high temperature on rice growth.  相似文献

We evaluated the combined effects of elevated CO2 and water availability on photosynthesis in barley. Soil and plant water content decreased with water stress, but less under elevated CO2 concentration (EC) compared with ambient CO2 concentration (AC). During water stress, stomatal conductance, carboxylation rate, RuBP regeneration, and the rate of triose phosphate utilisation (TPU) were decreased but less when plants grew under EC. Drought treatments caused only a slight effect on maximum photochemical efficiency (variable to maximum fluorescence ratio, Fv/Fm), whereas the actual quantum yield (ΦPS2), maximum electron transport rate (Jmax) and photochemical quenching (qP) were decreased and the non photochemical quenching (NPQ) was enhanced. Under water deficit, the allocation of electrons to CO2 assimilation was diminished by 49 % at AC and by 26 % at EC while the allocation to O2 reduction was increased by 15 % at AC and by 12 % at EC.  相似文献

Plant growth, chlorophyll (Chl) content, photosynthetic gas exchange, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCO) enzyme activity, and Chl fluorescence in radish (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) plants were examined after turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) infection. Plant fresh mass, dry mass, Chl content, net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), and RuBPCO activity were significantly lower in infected plants after 5 weeks of virus infection as compared to healthy plants. The 5-week virus infection did not induce significant differences in intercellular CO2 concentration (C i, photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm), excitation capture efficiency of open PS2 reaction centres (Fv'/Fm'), effective quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (ΔF/Fm'), and photochemical quenching (qP), but non-photochemical quenching (qN) and alternative electron sink (AES) were significantly enhanced. Thus the decreased plant biomass of TuMV-infected plants might be associated with the decreased photosynthetic activity mainly due to reduced RuBPCO activity.  相似文献

Acclimation of photosynthetic capacity to elevated CO2 involves a decrease of the leaf Rubisco content. In the present study, it was hypothesized that nitrogen uptake and partitioning within the leaf and among different aboveground organs affects the down-regulation of Rubisco. Given the interdependence of nitrogen and cytokinin signals at the whole plant level, it is also proposed that cytokinins affect the nitrogen economy of plants under elevated CO2, and therefore the acclimatory responses. Spring wheat received varying levels of nitrogen and cytokinin in field chambers with ambient (370 μmol mol−1) or elevated (700 μmol mol−1) atmospheric CO2. Gas exchange, Rubisco, soluble protein and nitrogen contents were determined in the top three leaves in the canopy, together with total nitrogen contents per shoot. Growth in elevated CO2 induced decreases in photosynthetic capacity only when nitrogen supply was low. However, the leaf contents of Rubisco, soluble protein and total nitrogen on an area basis declined in elevated CO2 regardless of nitrogen supply. Total nitrogen in the shoot was no lower in elevated than ambient CO2, but the fraction of this nitrogen located in flag and penultimate leaves was lower in elevated CO2. Decreased Rubisco: chlorophyll ratios accompanied losses of leaf Rubisco with CO2 enrichment. Cytokinin applications increased nitrogen content in all leaves and nitrogen allocation to senescing leaves, but decreased Rubisco contents in flag leaves at anthesis and in all leaves 20 days later, together with the amount of Rubisco relative to soluble protein in all leaves at both growth stages. The results suggest that down regulation of Rubisco in leaves at elevated CO2 is linked with decreased allocation of nitrogen to the younger leaves and that cytokinins cause a fractional decrease of Rubisco and therefore do not alleviate acclimation to elevated CO2.  相似文献

Changes in pigment composition and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters were studied in 20 year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees grown in environment-controlled chambers and subjected to ambient conditions (CON), doubled ambient CO2 concentration (EC), elevated temperature (ambient +2−6 °C, ET), or a combination of EC and ET (ECT) for four years. EC did not significantly alter the optimal photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2; Fv/Fm), or Chl a+b content during the main growth season (days 150–240) but it reduced Fv/Fm and the Chl a+b content and increased the ratio of total carotenoids to Chl a+b during the ‘off season’. By contrast, ET significantly enhanced the efficiency of PS2 in terms of increases in Fv/Fm and Chl a+b content throughout the year, but with more pronounced enhancement in the ‘off season’. The reduction in Fv/Fm during autumn could be associated with the CO2-induced earlier yellowing of the leaves, whereas the temperature-stimulated increase in the photochemical efficiency of PS2 during the ‘off season’ could be attributed to the maintenance of a high sink capacity. The pigment and fluorescence responses in the case of ECT showed a similar pattern to that for ET, implying the importance of the temperature factor in future climate changes in the boreal zone. To assess the relationship between chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (CF) and photosynthetic pigments, soybean was grown under varying phosphorus (P) nutrition at ambient and elevated CO2 (EC). The EC stimulated, but P deficiency decreased plant height, node numbers, and leaf area concomitantly with the rates of stem elongation, node addition, and leaf area expansion. Under P deficiency, CF parameters and pigments declined except that carotenoids (Car) were relatively stable indicating its role in photoprotection. The CF parameters were strongly related with Chl concentration but not with Chl a/b or Car. However, total Chl/Car showed the strongest association with CF parameters such as quantum efficiency and yield of photosystem II. This relationship was not affected by CO2 treatment. The high correlation between CF and total Chl/Car underscores the significance of the quantification of both, Chl and Car concentrations, to understand the photochemistry and underlying processes of photoprotection and mechanisms of excess energy dissipation in a given environment.  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters were studied in Arbutus unedo L. trees growing at either ambient (AC) or elevated EC (mean 465 μmol mol-1) CO2 concentration near a natural CO2 vent in Orciatico, Italy Diurnal courses of net photosynthetic rate (P N), ratio of variable to maximum chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), and quantum yield of electron transport through photosystem 2 (Φ2) were measured on sun and shade leaves. The contents of N, C, Ca, K, P, and chlorophyll (Chl) and specific leaf area (SLA) in these leaf categories were also determined. A morning peak and midday depression of P N were found for both AC and EC sun leaves. Long-term EC caused little or no down-acclimation of P N in sum leaves. The estimate of total daily CO2 uptake was lower in AC leaves than in EC leaves. In shade leaves, it reached up to 70 % of the value of sun leaves. The Fv/Fm ratio showed decreasing trend in the morning, reached a minimum at midday (90 % of dawn value), and then increased in the afternoon. The EC had no effect on Fv/Fm either in sun or shade leaves. Plants grown near the CO2 spring had lower Chl content, higher SLA, and higher Ca and K contents than plants grown under AC. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Growth in elevated CO2 often leads to decreased plant nitrogen contents and down-regulation of photosynthetic capacity. Here, we investigated whether elevated CO2 limits nitrogen uptake when nutrient movement to roots is unrestricted, and the dependence of this limitation on nitrogen supply and plant development in durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.). Plants were grown hydroponically at two N supplies and ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations. Elevated CO2 decreased nitrate uptake per unit root mass with low N supply at early grain filling, but not at anthesis. This decrease was not associated with higher nitrate or amino acid, or lower non-structural carbohydrate contents in roots. At anthesis, elevated CO2 decreased the nitrogen content of roots with both levels of N and that of aboveground organs with high N. With low N, elevated CO2 increased N allocation to aboveground plant organs and nitrogen concentration per unit flag leaf area at anthesis, and per unit aboveground dry mass at both growth stages. The results from the hydroponic experiment suggest that elevated CO2 restricts nitrate uptake late in development, high N supply overriding this restriction. Increased nitrogen allocation to young leaves at low N supply could alleviate photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2.  相似文献

We compared flavonoids in green, mature, and senescing flag leaves of wheat grown under ambient (AC - 370 mol mol-1) and elevated (EC - 550 mol mol-1) concentrations of CO2 in a FACE (Free Air CO2 Enrichment) system. The concentrations of flag leaf flavonoids (e.g., isoorientin and tricin) decreased to one third in mature leaves, and the majoritary isoorientin almost disappeared in senescing leaves. Flavonoid concentrations increased in green well-developed flag leaves under EC (46 % isoorientin and 55 % tricin), whereas the differences disappeared in mature and senescing flag leaves. Predictions of changes in litter phenolic concentrations and their effects on decomposition rates under EC based on changes in green leaves need to be revised.  相似文献

The effects of elevated carbon dioxide on plant–herbivore interactions have been summarized in a number of narrative reviews and metaanalyses, while accompanying elevation of temperature has not received sufficient attention. The goal of our study is to search, by means of metaanalysis, for a general pattern in responses of herbivores, and plant characteristics important for herbivores, to simultaneous experimental increase of carbon dioxide and temperature (ECET) in comparison with both ambient conditions and responses to elevated CO2 (EC) and temperature (ET) applied separately. Our database includes 42 papers describing studies of 31 plant species and seven herbivore species. Nitrogen concentration and C/N ratio in plants decreased under both EC and ECET treatments, whereas ET had no significant effect. Concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates and phenolics increased in EC, decreased in ET and did not change in ECET treatments, whereas terpenes did not respond to EC but increased in both ET and ECET; leaf toughness increased in both EC and ECET. Responses of defensive secondary compounds to treatments differed between woody and green tissues as well as between gymnosperm and angiosperm plants. Insect herbivore performance was adversely affected by EC, favoured by ET, and not modified by ECET. Our analysis allowed to distinguish three types of relationships between CO2 and temperature elevation: (1) responses to EC do not depend on temperature (nitrogen, C/N, leaf toughness, phenolics in angiosperm leaves), (2) responses to EC are mitigated by ET (sugars and starch, terpenes in needles of gymnosperms, insect performance) and (3) effects emerge only under ECET (nitrogen in gymnosperms, and phenolics and terpenes in woody tissues). This result indicates that conclusions of CO2 elevation studies cannot be directly extrapolated to a more realistic climate change scenario. The predicted negative effects of CO2 elevation on herbivores are likely to be mitigated by temperature increase.  相似文献
