Lithium‐air (Li‐air) batteries have become attractive because of their extremely high theoretical energy density. However, conventional Li‐air cells operating with non‐aqueous electrolytes suffer from poor cycle life and low practical energy density due to the clogging of the porous air cathode by insoluble discharge products, contamination of the organic electrolyte and lithium metal anode by moist air, and decomposition of the electrolyte during cycling. These difficulties may be overcome by adopting a cell configuration that consists of a lithium‐metal anode protected from air by a Li+‐ion solid electrolyte and an air electrode in an aqueous catholyte. In this type of configuration, a Li+‐ion conducting “buffer” layer between the lithium‐metal anode and the solid electrolyte is often necessary due to the instability of many solid electrolytes in contact with lithium metal. Based on the type of buffer layer, two different battery configurations are possible: “hybrid” Li‐air batteries and “aqueous” Li‐air batteries. The hybrid and aqueous Li‐air batteries utilize the same battery chemistry and face similar challenges that limit the cell performance. Here, an overview of recent developments in hybrid and aqueous Li‐air batteries is provided and the factors that influence their performance and impede their practical applications, followed by future directions are discussed.  相似文献

Although the rechargeable lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries have extremely high theoretical specific energy, the practical application of these batteries is still limited by the instability of their carbon‐based air‐electrode, Li metal anode, and electrodes, toward reduced oxygen species. Here a simple one‐step in situ electrochemical precharging strategy is demonstrated to generate thin protective films on both carbon nanotubes (CNTs), air‐electrodes and Li metal anodes simultaneously under an inert atmosphere. Li–O2 cells after such pretreatment demonstrate significantly extended cycle life of 110 and 180 cycles under the capacity‐limited protocol of 1000 mA h g?1 and 500 mA h g?1, respectively, which is far more than those without pretreatment. The thin‐films formed from decomposition of electrolyte during in situ electrochemical precharging processes in an inert environment, can protect both CNTs air‐electrode and Li metal anode prior to conventional Li–O2 discharge/charge cycling, where reactive reduced oxygen species are formed. This work provides a new approach for protection of carbon‐based air‐electrodes and Li metal anodes in practical Li–O2 batteries, and may also be applied to other battery systems.  相似文献

Lithium‐air batteries with an aqueous alkaline electrolyte promise a much higher practical energy density and capacity than conventional lithium‐ion batteries. However, high cathode overpotentials are some of the main problems during cycling. In our previous work, a catalyst combination of Ag and Co3O4 is found that reduces overpotential significantly, and is highly active and also long‐term stable. In the present investigations, X‐ray diffraction and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy are applied to study the structure and composition of the cathode material during oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. Changes of the oxidation states during cycling are responsible for an enhanced oxygen evolution reaction current density but also for losses due to a lower electronic conductivity of the electrodes. The presence and formation of a mixed oxidation state for silver oxide (AgIAgIIIO2) at high potentials is identified. In contradiction to literature, time dependent X‐ray diffraction measurements evidence that this phase is not stable under dry conditions and progressively decays to Ag2O. Electrode mappings show a highly homogeneous oxidation of the electrodes during cycling and quantitative analysis of the observed phases is carried out by Rietveld analysis. Long‐term material behavior completes the investigations.  相似文献

Phenyl disulfide (PDS) is employed as an electrolyte additive in lithium–carbon dioxide (Li–CO2) batteries to allow for a solution‐mediated carbon dioxide reduction pathway. Thiophenolate anions, generated via electrochemical reduction of PDS, act as CO2 capture agents by forming the adduct S‐phenyl carbonothioate (SPC?) in solution. A mechanism of SPC?‐mediated CO2 capture and utilization is proposed and supported via carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. Reversible formation and decomposition of lithium carbonate and amorphous carbon during cycling, facilitated by the solution‐mediated pathway, are demonstrated with an array of characterization techniques. Li–CO2 batteries employing the PDS additive show vastly improved capacity, energy efficiency, and cycle life. The enhanced Li–CO2 battery performance offered by the proposed solution‐mediated reaction pathway offers a compelling step forward in the pursuit of reversible CO2 utilization.  相似文献

Lithium‐oxygen batteries represent a significant scientific challenge for high‐rate and long‐term cycling using oxygen electrodes that contain efficient electrocatalysts. The mixed transition metal oxide catalysts provide the most efficient catalytic activity for partial heterogeneous surface cations with oxygen vacancies as the active phase. They include multiple oxidation states and oxygen vacancies. Here, using a combination of transmission electron microscopy, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical properties to probe the surface of the MnMoO4 nanowires, it is shown that the intrinsic MnMoO4 oxygen vacancies on the oxygen electrode are an effective strategy to achieve a high reversibility and high efficiency for lithium‐oxygen (Li‐O2) batteries. The modified MnMoO4 nanowires exhibit a highly stable capacity at a fixed capacity of 5000 mA h gsp?1 (calculated weight of Super P carbon black) during 50 cycles, a high‐rate capability at a current rate of 3000 mA gsp?1 during 70 cycles, and a long‐term reversible capacity during 188 cycles at a fixed capacity of 1000 mA h gsp?1. It is demonstrated that this strategy for creating mixed transition metal oxides (e.g., MnMoO4) may pave the way for the new structural design of electrocatalysts for Li‐O2 batteries.  相似文献

Advanced electrode materials with bendability and stretchability are critical for the rapid development of fully flexible/stretchable lithium‐ion batteries. However, the sufficiently stretchable lithium‐ion battery is still underdeveloped that is one of the biggest challenges preventing from realizing fully deformable power sources. Here, a low‐temperature hydrothermal synthesis of a cathode material for stretchable lithium‐ion battery is reported by the in situ growth of LiMn2O4 (LMO) nanocrystals inside 3D carbon nanotube (CNT) film networks. The LMO/CNT film composite has demonstrated the chemical bonding between the LMO active materials and CNT scaffolds, which is the most important characteristic of the stretchable electrodes. When coupled with a wrinkled MnOx /CNT film anode, a binder‐free, all‐manganese‐based stretchable full battery cell is assembled which delivers a high average specific capacity of ≈97 mA h g?1 and stabilizes after over 300 cycles with an enormous strain of 100%. Furthermore, combining with other merits such as low cost, natural abundance, and environmentally friendly, the all‐manganese design is expected to accelerate the practical applications of stretchable lithium‐ion batteries for fully flexible and biomedical electronics.  相似文献

There is a growing concern about the cyclability and safety, in particular, of the high‐energy density lithium–metal batteries. This concern is even greater for Li–O2 batteries because O2 that is transported from the cathode to the anode compartment, can exacerbate side reactions and dendrite growth of the lithium metal anode. The key to solving this dilemma lays in tailoring the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed on the lithium metal anode in Li–O2 batteries. Here it is reported that a new electrolyte, formed from LiFSI as the salt and a mixture of tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether and polymeric ionic liquid of P[C5O2NMA,11]FSI as the solvent, can produce a stable electrode (both cathode and anode)|electrolyte interface in Li–O2 batteries. Specifically, this new electrolyte, when in contact with lithium metal anodes, has the ability to produce a uniform SEI with high ionic conductivity for Li+ transport and desired mechanical property for suppression of dendritic lithium growth. Moreover, the electrolyte possesses a high oxidation tolerance that is very beneficial to the oxygen electrochemistry on the cathode of Li–O2 batteries. As a result, enhanced reversibility and cycle life are realized for the resultant Li–O2 batteries.  相似文献

Lithium metal is considered to be the most promising anode for the next generation of batteries if the issues related to safety and low coulombic efficiency can be overcome. It is known that the initial morphology of the lithium metal anode has a great influence on the cycling characteristics of a lithium metal battery (LMB). Lithium‐powder‐based electrodes (Lip‐electrodes) are reported to diminish the occurrence of high surface area lithium deposits. Usually, ultra‐thin lithium foils (<50 µm) and Lip‐electrodes are prepared on a copper substrate, thus a metal–metal contact area is generated. The combination of these two metals in the presence of an electrolyte, however, can lead to galvanic corrosion. Herein, the corrosion behavior of Lip‐electrodes is studied. The porosity of such electrodes leads to a high amount of accessible Cu surface in contact with electrolyte. As a consequence, Lip‐electrodes aged for 1 week in the electrolyte show spontaneous lithium dissolution near the junction to copper and void formation on the lithium‐powder particles. This corrosion process affects the delivered capacity of Lip‐electrodes and increases the overvoltage of the lithium electrodissolution process. The occurrence of corrosion at the Cu|Lip interface raises concerns about the practicality of multi‐metallic component systems for LMBs.  相似文献

Lithium (Li) metal anodes are promising candidates for high‐energy‐density batteries. However, uncontrollable dendritic plating behavior and infinite volume expansion are hindering their practical applications. Herein, a novel CuO@Ti‐mesh (CTM) is prepared by microwave‐assisted reactions, followed by pressing on Li wafers, leading to Li/CuO@Ti‐mesh (LCTM) composite anodes. The lithiophilic CuO nanoflowers on Ti‐mesh provides evenly distributed nucleation sites, inducing uniform Li‐ion lateral plating, which can effectively inhibit the growth of Li dendrites and volume expansion during cycling. The as‐prepared LCTM composite anode exhibits high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 94.2% at 10 mA cm‐2 over 90 cycles. Meanwhile, the LCTM anode shows a low overpotential of 50 mV at 10 mA cm‐2 over 16 000 cycles and a low overpotential of 90 and 250 mV even at ultrahigh current densities of 20 and 40 mA cm‐2. When paired with Li4Ti5O12 (LTO), it enhances the capacity retention of LTO/Li wafer full cells by about two times from 36.6% to 73.0% and 42.0% to 80.0% at 5C and 10C with long‐term cycling. It is hoped that this LCTM anode with ultrahigh rates and ultralong cycle life may put Li‐metal anode forward to practical applications, such as in Li–S, Li‐air batteries, etc.  相似文献

The application of lithium (Li) metal anodes in Li metal batteries has been hindered by growth of Li dendrites, which lead to short cycling life. Here a Li‐ion‐affinity leaky film as a protection layer is reported to promote a dendrite‐free Li metal anode. The leaky film induces electrokinetic phenomena to enhance Li‐ion transport, leading to a reduced Li‐ion concentration polarization and homogeneous Li‐ion distribution. As a result, the dendrite‐free Li metal anode during Li plating/stripping is demonstrated even at an extremely high deposition capacity (6 mAh cm?2) and current density (40 mA cm?2) with improved Coulombic efficiencies. A full cell battery with the leaky‐film protected Li metal as the anode and high‐areal‐capacity LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM‐811) (≈4.2 mAh cm?2) or LiFePO4 (≈3.8 mAh cm?2) as the cathode shows improved cycling stability and capacity retention, even at lean electrolyte conditions.  相似文献

Solid‐state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) may become one of the high‐energy density storage devices for the next generation of electric vehicles. High safety and energy density can be achieved by utilizing solid electrolytes and Li metal anodes. Therefore, developing cathode materials which can match with Li metal anode efficiently is indispensable. In SSLMBs, Li metal anodes can afford the majority of active lithium ions, then lithium‐depleted cathode materials can be a competitive candidate to achieve high gravimetric energy density as well as save lithium resources. Li0.33MnO2 lithium‐depleted material is chosen, which also has the advantages of low synthesis temperature and low cost (cobalt‐free). Notably, solid‐state electrolyte can greatly alleviate the problem of manganese dissolution in the electrolyte, which is beneficial to improve the cycling stability of the battery. Thus, SSLMBs enable practical applications of lithium‐depleted cathode materials.  相似文献

Securing the chemical and physical stabilities of electrode/solid‐electrolyte interfaces is crucial for the use of solid electrolytes in all‐solid‐state batteries. Directly probing these interfaces during electrochemical reactions would significantly enrich the mechanistic understanding and inspire potential solutions for their regulation. Herein, the electrochemistry of the lithium/Li7La3Zr2O12‐electrolyte interface is elucidated by probing lithium deposition through the electrolyte in an anode‐free solid‐state battery in real time. Lithium plating is strongly affected by the geometry of the garnet‐type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) surface, where nonuniform/filamentary growth is triggered particularly at morphological defects. More importantly, lithium‐growth behavior significantly changes when the LLZO surface is modified with an artificial interlayer to produce regulated lithium depositions. It is shown that lithium‐growth kinetics critically depend on the nature of the interlayer species, leading to distinct lithium‐deposition morphologies. Subsequently, the dynamic role of the interlayer in battery operation is discussed as a buffer and seed layer for lithium redistribution and precipitation, respectively, in tailoring lithium deposition. These findings broaden the understanding of the electrochemical lithium‐plating process at the solid‐electrolyte/lithium interface, highlight the importance of exploring various interlayers as a new avenue for regulating the lithium‐metal anode, and also offer insight into the nature of lithium growth in anode‐free solid‐state batteries.  相似文献

Rechargeable lithium‐oxygen (Li‐O2) batteries are one of the most promising technologies for next‐generation energy storage, which is also a critical part of the future renewable energy portfolio; however, its commercialization is still hindered by several challenges. The high charge overpotential, in particular, not only causes problems by increasing the possibility of electrolyte decomposition but also induces a low round‐trip efficiency and coulombic efficiency. Here, by choosing the right component proportion in Pt‐Cu bimetallic electrocatalysts that optimize electrocatalytic activity of electrochemical reactions, especially of oxygen evolution reactions, a superior electrochemical behavior is demonstrated, with a low charge overpotential of 0.2 V and cycleability of 50 discharge/charge cycles before capacity fading. The optimized Pt‐Cu bimetallic electrocatalysts significantly reduce the charge overpotential and furthermore enhance the efficiency, stability, and cycleability of an aprotic Li‐O2 battery.  相似文献

The development of lithium–sulfur batteries necessitates a thorough understanding of the lithium‐deposition process. A novel full‐cell configuration comprising an Li2S cathode and a bare copper foil on the anode side is presented here. The absence of excess lithium allows for the realization of a truly lithium‐limited Li–S battery, which operates by reversible plating and stripping of lithium on the hostless‐anode substrate (copper foil). Its performance is closely tied to the efficiency of lithium deposition, generating valuable insights on the role and dynamic behavior of lithium anode. The Li2S full cell shows reasonable capacity retention with a Coulombic efficiency of 96% over 100 cycles, which is a tremendous improvement over that of a similar lithium‐plating‐based full cell with LiFePO4 cathodes. The exceptional robustness of the Li2S system is attributed to an intrinsic stabilization of the lithium‐deposition process, which is mediated by polysulfide intermediates that form protective Li2S and Li2S2 regions on the deposited lithium. Combined with the large improvements in energy density and safety by the elimination of a metallic lithium anode, the stability and electrochemical performance of the lithium‐plating‐based Li2S full cell establish it as an important trajectory for Li–S battery research, focusing on practical realization of reversible lithium anodes.  相似文献

The nonaqueous lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) battery is considered as one of the most promising candidates for next‐generation energy storage systems because of its very high theoretical energy density. However, its development is severely hindered by large overpotential and limited capacity, far less than theory, caused by sluggish oxygen redox kinetics, pore clogging by solid Li2O2 deposition, inferior Li2O2/cathode contact interface, and difficult oxygen transport. Herein, an open‐structured Co9S8 matrix with sisal morphology is reported for the first time as an oxygen cathode for Li–O2 batteries, in which the catalyzing for oxygen redox, good Li2O2/cathode contact interface, favorable oxygen evolution, and a promising Li2O2 storage matrix are successfully achieved simultaneously, leading to a significant improvement in the electrochemical performance of Li–O2 batteries. The intrinsic oxygen‐affinity revealed by density functional theory calculations and superior bifunctional catalytic properties of Co9S8 electrode are found to play an important role in the remarkable enhancement in specific capacity and round‐trip efficiency for Li–O2 batteries. As expected, the Co9S8 electrode can deliver a high discharge capacity of ≈6875 mA h g?1 at 50 mA g?1 and exhibit a low overpotential of 0.57 V under a cutoff capacity of 1000 mA h g?1, outperforming most of the current metal‐oxide‐based cathodes.  相似文献

Lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries are being considered as the next‐generation high‐energy‐storage system due to their high theoretical energy density. However, the use of a lithium‐metal anode poses serious safety concerns due to lithium dendrite formation, which causes short‐circuiting, and possible explosions of the cell. One feasible way to address this issue is to pair a fully lithiated lithium sulfide (Li2S) cathode with lithium metal‐free anodes. However, bulk Li2S particles face the challenges of having a large activation barrier during the initial charge, low active‐material utilization, poor electrical conductivity, and fast capacity fade, preventing their practical utility. Here, the development of a self‐supported, high capacity, long‐life cathode material is presented for Li‐S batteries by coating Li2S onto doped graphene aerogels via a simple liquid infiltration–evaporation coating method. The resultant cathodes are able to lower the initial charge voltage barrier and attain a high specific capacity, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. The improved performance can be attributed to the (i) cross‐linked, porous graphene network enabling fast electron/ion transfer, (ii) coated Li2S on graphene with high utilization and a reduced energy barrier, and (iii) doped heteroatoms with a strong binding affinity toward Li2S/lithium polysulfides with reduced polysulfide dissolution based on first‐principles calculations.  相似文献

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are promising candidates for next‐generation energy storage due to their high energy densities on both weight and volume bases. However, LMBs usually undergo uncontrollable lithium deposition, unstable solid electrolyte interphase, and volume expansion, which easily lead to low Coulombic efficiency, poor cycling performance, and even safety hazards, hindering their practical applications for more than forty years. These issues can be further exacerbated if operated at high current densities. Here a stable lithium metal battery enabled by 3D porous poly‐melamine‐formaldehyde (PMF)/Li composite anode is reported. PMF with a large number of polar groups (amine and triazine) can effectively homogenize Li‐ion concentration when these ions approach to the anode surface and thus achieve uniform Li deposition. Moreover, the 3D structured anode can serve as a Li host to mitigate the volume change during Li stripping and plating process. Galvanostatic measurements demonstrate that the 3D composite electrode can achieve high‐lithium Coulombic efficiency of 94.7% at an ultrahigh current density of 10 mA cm?2 after 50 cycles with low hysteresis and smooth voltage plateaus. When coupled with Li4Ti5O12, half‐cells show enhanced rate capabilities and Coulombic efficiencies, opening great opportunities for high‐energy batteries.  相似文献

Li‐ion batteries as energy storage devices need to be periodically charged for sustainably powering electronic devices owing to their limited capacities. Here, the feasibility of utilizing Li‐ion batteries as both the energy storage and scavenging units is demonstrated. Flexible Li‐ion batteries fabricated from electrospun LiMn2O4 nanowires as cathode and carbon nanowires as anode enable a capacity retention of 90% coulombic efficiency after 50 cycles. Through the coupling between triboelectrification and electrostatic induction, the adjacent electrodes of two Li‐ion batteries can deliver an output peak voltage of about 200 V and an output peak current of about 25 µA under ambient wind‐induced vibrations of a hexafluoropropene–tetrafluoroethylene copolymer film between the two Li‐ion batteries. The self‐charging Li‐ion batteries have been demonstrated to charge themselves up to 3.5 V in about 3 min under wind‐induced mechanical excitations. The advantages of the self‐charging Li‐ion batteries can provide important applications for sustainably powering electronics and self‐powered sensor systems.  相似文献

Mechanically bendable and flexible functionalities are urgently required for next‐generation battery systems that will be included in soft and wearable electronics, active sportswear, and origami‐based deployable space structures. However, it is very difficult to synthesize anode and cathode electrodes that have high energy density and structural reliability under large bending deformation. Here, vanadium oxide (V2O5) and nickel cobalt oxide (NiCo2O4) nanowire‐carbon fabric electrodes for highly flexible and bendable lithium ion batteries are reported. The vanadium oxide and nickel cobalt oxide nanowires were directly grown on plasma‐treated carbon fabric and were used as cathode and anode electrodes in a full cell lithium ion battery. Most importantly, a pre‐lithiation process was added to the nickel cobalt oxide nanowire anode to facilitate the construction of a full cell using symmetrically‐architectured nanowire‐carbon fabric electrodes. The highly bendable full cell based on poly(ethylene oxide) polymer electrolyte and room temperature ionic liquid shows high energy density of 364.2 Wh kg?1 at power density of 240 W kg?1, without significant performance degradation even under large bending deformations. These results show that vanadium oxide and lithiated nickel cobalt oxide nanowire‐carbon fabrics are a good combination for binder‐free electrodes in highly flexible lithium‐ion batteries.  相似文献

The pressing demand on the electronic vehicles with long driving range on a single charge has necessitated the development of next‐generation high‐energy‐density batteries. Non‐aqueous Li‐O2 batteries have received rapidly growing attention due to their higher theoretical energy densities compared to those of state‐of‐the‐art Li‐ion batteries.To make them practical for commercial applications, many critical issues must be overcome, including low round‐trip efficiency and poor cycling stability, which are intimately connected to the problems resulting from cathode degradation during cycling. Encouragingly, during the past years, much effort has been devoted to enhancing the stability of the cathode using a variety of strategies and these have effectively surmounted the challenges derived from cathode deteriorations,thus endowing Li‐O2 batteries with significantly improved electrochemical performances. Here, a brief overview of the general development of Li‐O2 battery is presented. Then, critical issues relevant to the cathode instability are discussed and remarkable achievements in enhancing the cathode stability are highlighted. Finally, perspectives towards the development of next generation highly stable cathode are also discussed.  相似文献
