A field trial was conducted to study the response of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) to different phosphorus levels (16, 24 or 32 kg P ha–1) and inoculation with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus fasciculatum on vertisol during summer 1993. At the vegetative stage of sunflower, percent mycorrhizal root colonization, spore count, dry biomass and P uptake did not differ significantly between inoculated and uninoculated control plants. However, at later stages (flowering and maturity) percent root colonization, spore count, total dry biomass and total P uptake were significantly higher in inoculated plants than in uninoculated control plants. The total dry biomass, P content and seed yield increased with increasing P level in uninoculated plants, whereas no significant difference was observed between 16 and 32 kg P ha–1 in inoculated plants. The positive effect of mycorrhizal inoculation decreased with increasing P level above 16 kg P ha–1, due to decreased percent root colonization and spore count at higher P levels.  相似文献

Summary Accurate estimates of N2 fixation by legumes are requisite to determine their net contribution of fixed N2 to the soil N pool. However, estimates of N2 fixation derived with the traditional15N methods of isotope dilution and AN value are costly.Field experiments utilizing15N-enriched (NH4)2SO4 were conducted to evaluate a modified difference method for determining N2 fixation by fababean, lentil, Alaska pea, Austrian winter pea, blue lupin and chickpea, and to quantify their net contribution of fixed N2 to the soil N pool. Spring wheat and non-nodulated chickpea, each fertilized with two N rates, were utilized as non-fixing controls.Estimates of N2 fixation based on the two control crops were similar. Increasing the N rate to the controls reduced AN values 32, 18 and 43% respectively in 1981, 1982 and 1983 resulting in greater N2 fixation estimates. Mean seasonal N2 fixation by fababean, lentil and Austrian winter pea was near 80 kg N ha–1, pea and blue lupin near 60 kg N ha–1, and chickpea less than 10 kg N ha–1. The net effects of the legume crops on the soil N pool ranged from a 70 kg N ha–1 input by lentil in 1982, to a removal of 48 kg N ha–1 by chickpea in 1983.Estimates of N2 fixation obtained by the proposed modified difference method approximate those derived by the isotope dilution technique, are determined with less cost, and are more reliable than the total plant N procedure.Scientific paper No. 6605. The nitrogen contribution from the shoot and root system of symbiotically grown leucaena was evaluated in a field experiment on an Alfisol at IITA in Southern Nigeria. Maize in plots that received prunings from inoculated leucaena contained more N and grain yield was increased by 1.9 t.ha.–1. Large quantities of nitrogen were harvested with leucaena prunings (300 kg N ha–1 in six months) but the efficiency of utilization of this nitrogen by maize was low compared to inorganic N fertilizer (ammonium sulphate) at 80 kg N ha–1. Maize yield data indicated that nitrogen in leucaena prunigs was 34 and 45% as efficient as 80 kg N ha–1 of (NH4)2SO4 for uninoculated and inoculated plants with Rhizobium IRc 1045, respectively. In plots where the prunings were removed, the leaf litter and decaying roots and nodules contributed N equivalent of 32 kg ha–1. Twenty-five kg ha–1 was the inorganic N equivalent from nitrogen fixed symbiotically by leucaena when inoculated with Rhizobium strain IRc 1045. Application of prunings from inoculated leucaena resulted in higher soil ogranic C, total N, pH and available NO3.  相似文献

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is able to fix 20–60 kg N ha–1 under tropical environments in Brazil, but these amounts are inadequate to meet the N requirement for economically attractive seed yields. When the plant is supplemented with N fertilizer, N2 fixation by Rhizobium can be suppressed even at low rates of N. Using the 15N enriched method, two field experiments were conducted to compare the effect of foliar and soil applications of N-urea on N2 fixation traits and seed yield. All treatments received a similar fertilization including 10 kg N ha–1 at sowing. Increasing rates of N (10, 30 and 50 kg N ha–1) were applied for both methods. Foliar application significantly enhanced nodulation, N2 fixation (acetylene reduction activity) and yield at low N level (10 kg N ha–1). Foliar nitrogen was less suppressive to nodulation, even at higher N levels, than soil N treatments. In the site where established Rhizobium was in low numbers, inoculation contributed substantially to increased N2 fixation traits and yield. Both foliar and soil methods inhibited nodulation at high N rates and did not significantly increase bean yield, when comparing low (10 kg N ha–1) and high (50 kg N ha–1) rates applied after emergence. In both experiments, up to 30 kg N ha–1 of biologically fixed N2 were obtained when low rates of N were applied onto the leaves.  相似文献

Dry matter, total carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content of mature bream from Lake Balaton were investigated and the quantities of N and P stored in the bream population and their possible removal by fishery were estimated. Carbon made up 43.3–44.8% of dry weight, N made up on average 10.6% of the dry weight of bream and P accounted for a further 2.7%. About 3.3 kg N ha–1 and 0.9 kg P ha–l are stored in the bream population. Approximately 0.5 kg N ha–1 and 0.1 kg P ha–1 are removed from the lake by bream harvest. Taking into account the total fish yield, the N removal is 2.1% and P removal 3.4% of the amount entering the lake.  相似文献

Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in bioorganic fertilizers as part of sustainable agricultural practices to alleviate drawbacks of intensive farming practices. N2-fixing and P-solubilizing bacteria are important in plant nutrition increasing N and P uptake by the plants, and playing a significant role as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria in the biofertilization of crops. A study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of two N2-fixing (OSU-140 and OSU-142) and a strain of P-solubilizing bacteria (M-13) in single, dual and three strains combinations on sugar beet and barley yields under field conditions in 2001 and 2002. The treatments included: (1) Control (no inoculation and fertilizer), (2) Bacillus OSU-140, (3) Bacillus OSU-142, (4) Bacillus M-13, (5) OSU-140 + OSU-142, (6) OSU-140 + M-13, (7) OSU-142 + M-13, (8) OSU-140 + OSU-142 + M-13, (9) N, (10) NP. N and NP plots were fertilized with 120 kg N ha–1 and 120 kg N ha–1 + 90 kg P ha- for sugar beet and 80 kg N ha–1 and 80 kg N ha–1 + 60 kg P ha–1 for barley. The experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with five replicates. All inoculations and fertilizer applications significantly increased leaf, root and sugar yield of sugar beet and grain and biomass yields of barley over the control. Single inoculations with N2-fixing bacteria increased sugar beet root and barley yields by 5.6–11.0% depending on the species while P-solubilizing bacteria alone gave yield increases by 5.5–7.5% compared to control. Dual inoculation and mixture of three bacteria gave increases by 7.7–12.7% over control as compared with 20.7–25.9% yield increases by NP application. Mixture of all three strains, dual inoculation of N2-fixing OSU-142 and P-solubilizing M-13, and/or dual inoculation N2-fixing bacteria significantly increased root and sugar yields of sugar beet, compared with single inoculations with OSU-140 or M-13. Dual inoculation of N2-fixing Bacillus OSU-140 and OSU-142, and/or mixed inoculations with three bacteria significantly increased grain yield of barley compared with single inoculations of OSU-142 and M-13. In contrast with other combinations, dual inoculation of N2-fixing OSU-140 and P-solubilizing M-13 did not always significantly increase leaf, root and sugar yield of sugar beet, grain and biomass yield of barley compared to single applications both with N2-fixing bacteria. The beneficial effects of the bacteria on plant growth varied significantly depending on environmental conditions, bacterial strains, and plant and soil conditions.  相似文献

Effect of soil application of eight combinations of NPK fertilizers on the severity of black spot disease (BSD), caused by Alternaria brassicae (Sacc.) Berk., and yield of short duration oilseed rape (Brassica campestris L) were investigated under both pot and field conditions in 1987–88, 1988–89 and 1990–91. The severity of BSD was significantly greater (36–48%) on plants grown in ground treated with NP (N 90 kg ha–1+P 40 kg ha–1) applied as urea and single superphosphate respectively than on plants from the unfertilized control (NoPoKo) (o). However, the severity of BSD was significantly smaller (25–33%) when K (40 kg ha–1) was applied as muriate of potash than in plants from control and NP treatments. The effect of NK (N 90 kg ha–1+K 40 kg ha–1) in decreasing the severity of BSD was increasingly more pronounced than the effects of PK (P 40 kg ha–1+K 40 kg ha–1), NP and K (40 kg ha–1) applications. The decrease in the severity of BSD due to K was due to increased production in plants of phenolics which inhibited conidial germination and decreased sporulation of A. brassicae. The decrease in the severity of BSD due to NK application gave consistently increased seed yield 68% more than those of control and other treatments. The K-fertilized plants also showed increased resistance to lodging, increased 1000-seed weight and decreased seed infection. Seeds obtained from K-fertilized plants showed good seed germinability and vigorous seeding growth.  相似文献

Enhanced nitrogen (N) availability is one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss and degradation of ecosystem functions. However, in very nutrient-poor ecosystems, enhanced N input can, in the short-term, promote diversity. Mediterranean Basin ecosystems are nutrient-limited biodiversity hotspots, but no information is available on their medium- or long-term responses to enhanced N input. Since 2007, we have been manipulating the form and dose of available N in a Mediterranean Basin maquis in south-western Europe that has low ambient N deposition (<4 kg N ha−1 yr−1) and low soil N content (0.1%). N availability was modified by the addition of 40 kg N ha−1 yr−1 as a 1∶1 NH4Cl to (NH4)2SO4 mixture, and 40 and 80 kg N ha−1 yr−1 as NH4NO3. Over the following 5 years, the impacts on plant composition and diversity (richness and evenness) and some ecosystem characteristics (soil extractable N and organic matter, aboveground biomass and % of bare soil) were assessed. Plant species richness increased with enhanced N input and was more related to ammonium than to nitrate. Exposure to 40 kg NH4 +-N ha−1 yr−1 (alone and with nitrate) enhanced plant richness, but did not increase aboveground biomass; soil extractable N even increased under 80 kg NH4NO3-N ha−1 yr−1 and the % of bare soil increased under 40 kg NH4 +-N ha−1 yr−1. The treatment containing less ammonium, 40 kg NH4NO3-N ha−1 yr−1, did not enhance plant diversity but promoted aboveground biomass and reduced the % of bare soil. Data suggest that enhanced NHy availability affects the structure of the maquis, which may promote soil erosion and N leakage, whereas enhanced NOx availability leads to biomass accumulation which may increase the fire risk. These observations are relevant for land use management in biodiverse and fragmented ecosystems such as the maquis, especially in conservation areas.  相似文献

Amounts of C, P, and N consumed by all fish populations were estimated at 9 sites in two small lowland rivers. They mainly depended on fish density and were: 151.8 (27.9–453.3) kgC ha–1a–1, 3.1(0.5–8.8) kgP ha–1 a–1, and 30.3 (5.3–89.9) kg N ha–1 a–1. To build one kg of each of these elements into their body the fish consumed 7.9 ± 1.7 (% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGak0Jf9crFfpeea0xh9v8qiW7rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGabeiEayaara% aaaa!3912!\[{\text{\bar x}}\] ± S.D.) kg of C, 3.1 ± 0.8 kg of P, and 6.6 ± 1.3 kg of N. Thus, phosphorus was assimilated twice more efficiently than carbon and nitrogen. Pools of the three elements, calculated as mean biomass, are: 12.7 (1.2–42.1) kg C ha–1, 0.7(0.1–2.2) kgP ha–1, and 3.0 (0.3–9.7) kgN ha–1 The elements were assimilated especially effectively by young stages of fish.  相似文献

Summary Of the 143 million hectares of cultivated rice land in the world, 75% are planted to wetland rice. Wet or flooded conditions favour biological nitrogen fixation by providing (1) photic-oxic floodwater and surface soil for phototrophic, free-living or symbiotic blue-green algae (BGA), and (2) aphotic-anoxic soil for anaerobic or microaerobic, heterotrophic bacteria. TheAzolla-Anabaena symbiosis can accumulate as much as 200 kg N ha–1 in biomass. In tropical flooded fields, biomass production from a singleAzolla crop is about 15 t fresh weight ha–1 or 35 kg N ha–1. Low tolerance for high temperature, insect damage, phosphorus requirement, and maintenance of inoculum, limit application in the tropics. Basic work on taxonomy, sporulation, and breeding ofAzolla is needed. Although there are many reports of the positive effect of BGA inoculation on rice yield, the mechanisms of yield increase are not known. Efficient ways to increase N2-fixation by field-grown BGA are not well exploited. Studies on the ecology of floodwater communities are needed to understand the principles of manipulating BGA. Bacteria associated with rice roots and the basal portion of the shoot also fix nitrogen. The system is known as a rhizocoenosis. N2-fixation in rhizocoenosis in wetland rice is lower than that ofAzolla or BGA. Ways of manipulating this process are not known. Screening rice varieties that greatly stimulate N2-fixation may be the most efficient way of manipulating the rhizocoenosis. Stimulation of N2-fixation by bacterial inoculation needs to be quantified.  相似文献

During 4 years continuous measurements of N-trace gas exchange were carried out at the forest floor-atmosphere interface at the Höglwald Forest that is highly affected by atmospheric N-deposition. The measurements included spruce control, spruce limed and beech sites. Based on these field measurements and on intensive laboratory measurements of N2-emissions from the soils of the beech and spruce control sites, a total balance of N-gas emissions was calculated. NO2-deposition was in a range of –1.6 –2.9 kg N ha–1 yr–1 and no huge differences between the different sites could be demonstrated. In contrast to NO2-deposition, NO- and N2O-emissions showed a huge variability among the different sites. NO emissions were highest at the spruce control site (6.4–9.1 kg N ha–1 yr–1), lowest at the beech site (2.3–3.5 kg N ha–1 yr–1) and intermediate at the limed spruce site (3.4–5.4 kg N ha–1 yr–1). With regard to N2O-emissions, the following ranking between the sites was found: beech (1.6–6.6 kg N ha–1 yr–1) >> spruce limed (0.7–4.0 kg N ha–1 yr–1) > spruce control (0.4–3.1 kg N ha–1 yr–1). Average N-trace gas emissions (NO, NO2, N2O) for the years 1994–1997 were 6.8 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the spruce control site, 3.6 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the limed spruce site and 4.5 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the beech site. Considering N2-losses, which were significantly higher at the beech (12.4 kg N ha–1 yr–1) than at the spruce control site (7.2 kg N ha–1 yr–1), the magnitude of total gaseous N losses, i.e. N2-N + NO-N + NO2-N + N2O-N, could be calculated for the first time for a forest ecosystem. Total gaseous N-losses were 14.0 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the spruce control site and 15.5 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the beech site, respectively. In view of the huge interannual variability of N-trace gas fluxes and the pronounced site differences in N-gas emissions it is concluded that more research is needed in order to fully understand patterns of microbial N-cycling and N-gas production/emission in forest ecosystems and mechanisms of reactions of forest ecosystems to the ecological stress factor of atmospheric N-input.  相似文献

N deposition, N transformation and N leaching in acid forest soils   总被引:9,自引:3,他引:6
Nitrogen deposition, mineralisation, uptake and leaching were measured on a monthly basis in the field during 2 years in six forested stands on acidic soils under mountainous climate. Studies were conducted in three Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] plantations (D20: 20 year; D40: 40 yr; D60: 60 yr) on abandoned croplands in the Beaujolais Mounts; and two spruce (Picea abies Karst.) plantations (S45: 45 yr; S90: 90 yr) and an old beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stand (B150: 150 yr) on ancient forest soils in a small catchment in the Vosges Mountains. N deposition in throughfall varied between 7–8 kg ha–1 year–1 (D20, B150, S45) and 15–21 kg ha–1 yr–1 (S90, D40, D60). N in annual litterfall varied between 20–29 kg ha–1 (D40, D60, S90), and 36–43 kg ha–1 (D20, S45, B150). N leaching below root depth varied among stands within a much larger range, between 1–9 kg ha–1 yr–1 (B150, S45, D60) and 28–66 kg ha–1 yr–1 (D40, S90, D20), with no simple relationship with N deposition, or N deposition minus N storage in stand biomass. N mineralisation was between 57–121 kg ha–1 yr–1 (S45, D40, S90) and between 176–209 kg ha–1 yr–1 in (B150, D60 and D20). The amounts of nitrogen annually mineralised and nitrified were positively related. Neither general soil parameters, such as pH, soil type, base saturation and C:N ratio, nor deposition in throughfall or litterfall were simply related to the intensity of mineralisation and/or nitrification. When root uptake was not allowed, nitrate leaching increased by 11 kg ha–1 yr–1 at S45, 36 kg ha–1 yr–1 at S90 and between 69 and 91 kg ha–1 yr–1 at D20, D40, B150 and D60, in relation to the nitrification rates of each plot. From this data set and recent data from the literature, we suggest that: high nitrification and nitrate leaching in Douglas-fir soils was likely related to the former agricultural land use. High nitrification rate but very low nitrate leaching in the old beech soil was related to intense recycling of mineralised N by beech roots. Medium nitrification and nitrate leaching in the old spruce stand was related to the average level of N deposition and to the deposition and declining health of the stand. Very low nitrification and N leaching in the young spruce stand were considered representative of fast growing spruce plantations receiving low N deposition on acidic soils of ancient coniferous forests. Consequently, we suggest that past land use and fine root cycling (which is dependent on to tree species and health) should be taken into account to explain the variability in the relation between N deposition and leaching in forests.  相似文献

Wetland buffers may play an important role in the retention of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) that can be released in large quantities from forestry operations. In this study, we investigated the retention capacity of N and P of wetland vegetation comparing the control area with two experimental areas within one site before and after N and P pulse (45 kg N and 15 kg P) lasting one growing season (ca. 150 d). N and P pulse caused a significant increase in the plant biomass and N and P content in the upper experimental area, which received most of the added nutrients. Added N and P was mainly retained in the above and below ground parts of E. vaginatum, especially in storage organs and roots which form a long-term sink for nutrients. Total N retention in the plant biomass during the first year after N and P treatment ranged from 25.3 kg (equals to 126.7 kg N ha–1) in the upper experimental area to 6.1 kg (20.4 kg N ha–1) in the lower experimental area and 4.7 kg (15.7 kg N ha–1) in the control area. P retention ranged from 2.6 kg (13.1 kg P ha–1) in the upper experimental area to 1.0 kg (3.4 kg P ha–1) in the lower experimental area and 0.5 kg (1.8 kg P ha–1) in the control area. The retained proportions of N and P in the plant biomass in the two experimental areas were approximately 70% of the added N (45 kg N y–1) and approximately 25% of the added P (15 kg P y–1) during the first year after N and P addition in 1999. Our study shows that vigorously colonising and growing vegetation is the main factor in the retention of N, a significant factor in the retention of P in a constructed wetland buffer, and thus an important contributor to the prevention of detrimental effects of N and P leaching on watercourses.  相似文献

Summary Seed inoculation with Rhizobium and soil inoculation withGlomus fasciculatum increased nodulation, nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in plants and yield of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) var. BG 212 in pots containing unsterilized soil especially with 50kgP2O5 ha−1 in the form of superphosphate. Inoculation with Rhizobium orG. fasciculatum separately or in combination significantly increased the N2 fixed in straw and grain than uninoculated controls as determined by15N atom percent excess of plants grown in soil amended with labelled ammonium sulphate (15NH4)2SO4) at the rate of 20kg N ha−1. These increases were most pronounced when P was applied at 50kgP2O5 ha−1.  相似文献

Application of 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg N ha–1 of urea (U) in split doses with (and without)Azolla pinnata, R. Brown was studied for three consecutive seasons under planted field condition. Fresh weight (FW), acetylene reduction activity (ARA) and N yield of Azolla were found to be maximum 14 days after inoculation (DAI). Among the different treatments, maximum Azolla growth was recorded in no N control. The FW, ARA and N yield of Azolla were inhibited increasingly with the increase in N levels. Irrespective of season, FW and N yield of Azolla were inhibited only a small extent with 90 kg N ha–1 U, beyond which the inhibition was pronounced. ARA was inhibited only slightly up to 60 kg N ha–1 of U. Grain yield and crop N uptake of rice increased significantly up to 90 kg N ha–1 of U (alone or in combination with Azolla) in the dry seasons (variety IR 36) and up to 60 kg N ha–1 U in the wet season (variety CR 1018).  相似文献

The effects of planted fallows of Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr. and Calliandra calothyrsus (Meissner) on soil inorganic nitrogen dynamics and two subsequent maize crops were evaluated under field conditions in the highlands of eastern Kenya. Continuous unfertilised maize, maize/bean rotation and natural regrowth of vegetation (weed fallow) were used as control treatments. The proportion of symbiotic N2-fixation was estimated by measuring both leaf 15N enrichment and whole-plant 15N enrichment by the 15N dilution technique for Sesbania and Calliandra, using Eucalyptus saligna (Sm.) and Grevillea robusta (A. Cunn) as reference species. Above- and below-ground biomass and N contents were examined in Sesbania, Calliandra, Eucalyptus and Grevillea 22 months after planting. Both the content of inorganic N in the topsoil and the quantity of N mineralised during rainy seasons were higher after the Sesbania fallows than after the other treatments. Compared to the continuous unfertilised maize treatment, both residual crop yields were significantly higher when mineral N (one application of 60 kg N ha–1) was added. Furthermore, the second crop following the Sesbania fallow was significantly higher than the continuous maize crop. The above-ground biomass of the trees at final harvest were 31.5, 24.5, 32.5 and 43.5 Mg ha–1 for the Sesbania, Calliandra, Grevillea and Eucalyptus, respectively. For the total below-ground biomass the values for these same tree species were 11.1, 15.5, 17.7, and 19.1 Mg ha–1, respectively, of which coarse roots (>2 mm), including tap roots, amounted to 70–90%. About 70–90% of the N in Sesbania, and 50–70% in Calliandra, was derived from N2-fixation. Estimates based on leaf 15N enrichment and whole-plant 15N enrichment were strongly correlated. The N added by N2-fixation amounted to 280–360 kg N ha–1 for Sesbania and 120–170 kg N ha–1 for Calliandra, resulting in a positive N balance after two maize cropping seasons of 170–250 kg N ha–1 and 90–140 kg N ha–1, for Sesbania and Calliandra, respectively. All the other treatments gave negative N balances after two cropping seasons. We conclude that Sesbania sesban is a tree species well suited for short duration fallows due to its fast growth, high nutrient content, high litter quality and its ability to fix large amounts of N2 from the atmosphere.  相似文献

We compared symbiotic N2 fixation by winter forage legumes (clovers, medics and vetches) using the 15N natural abundance technique in three experiments. Vetches (Vicia spp.) were the most productive legumes, and woollypod vetch fixed (shoot+root) up to 265 kg N ha–1 (mean 227 kg N ha–1) during a 4–5 months period over winter and early spring. Balansa and Berseem clovers, and Gama medic were highly productive in the first experiment, but fixed significantly less N than woollypod vetch in the second experiment. A 6-year study (1997–2003) compared cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) systems with and without vetch, or with faba beans (Vicia faba L.) to assess the effects of these crops on cotton production. Woollypod vetch was grown either between annual cotton crops, or between wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) and cotton crops. Vetch added 230 kg N ha–1 (174 kg fixed N ha–1) to the soil when incorporated as a green manure. Faba bean shoot residues and nodulated roots contributed 108 kg fixed N ha–1 to the soil, following the removal of 80 kg N ha–1 in the harvested seed (meaned over three crops). Lablab (Lablab purpureus L. – summer-growing and irrigated) added 277 kg N ha–1 (244 kg fixed N ha–1) before incorporation as a green manure in the first year of the experiment. The economic optimum N fertiliser rate for each cropping system was determined every second year when all systems were sown to cotton. Cotton following cotton required 105 kg fertiliser N ha–1, but only 40 kg N ha–1 when vetch was grown between each cotton crop. Cotton following wheat required 83 kg fertiliser N ha–1 but no N fertiliser was needed when vetch was grown after wheat (the highest yielding system). Cotton following faba beans also required no N fertiliser. The vetch-based systems became more N fertile over the course of the experiment and produced greater lint yields than the comparative non-legume systems, and required less N fertiliser. While no cash flow was derived from growing vetch, economic benefits accrued from enhanced cotton yields, reduced N fertiliser requirements and improved soil fertility. These findings help explain the rotational benefits of vetches observed in other regions of the world.  相似文献

Rice (Oryza sativa) was grown in six sunlit, semi-closed growth chambers for two seasons at 350 L L–1 (ambient) and 650 L L–1 (elevated) CO2 and different levels of nitrogen (N) supplement. The objective of this research was to study the influence of CO2 enrichment and N nutrition on rice plant growth, soil microbial biomass, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved CH4. Elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) demonstrated a wide range of enhancement to both above- and below-ground plant biomass, in particular to stems and roots (for roots when N was not limiting) in the mid-season (80 days after transplanting) and stems/ears at the final harvest, depending on season and the level of N supplement. Elevated [CO2] significantly increased microbial biomass carbon in the surface 5 cm soil when N (90 kg ha–1) was in sufficient supply. Low N supplement (30 kg ha–1) limited the enhancement of root growth by elevated [CO2], leading consequently to diminished response of soil microbial biomass carbon to CO2 enrichment. The concentration of dissolved CH4 (as well as soil DOC, but to a lesser degree) was observed to be positively related to elevated [CO2], especially at high rate of N application (120 kg ha–1) or at 10 cm depth (versus 5 cm depth) in the later half of the growing season (at 80 kg N ha–1). Root senescence in the late season complicated the assessment of the effect of elevated [CO2] on root growth and soil organic carbon turnover and thus caution should be taken when interpreting respective high CO2 results.  相似文献

In a 2-year field experiment conducted on a Gleyic Luvisol in Stuttgart-Hohenheim one experimental and nine commercial maize cultivars were compared for their ability to utilize soil nitrate and to reduce related losses of nitrate through leaching. Soil nitrate was monitored periodically in CaCl2 extracts and in suction cup water. Nitrate concentrations in suction water were generally higher than in CaCl2 extracts. Both methods revealed that all cultivars examined were able to extract nitrate down to a soil depth of at least 120 cm (1988 season) or 150 cm (1987 season). Significant differences among the cultivars existed in nitrate depletion particularly in the subsoil. At harvest, residual nitrate in the upper 150 cm of the profile ranged from 73–110 kg N ha–1 in 1987 and from 59–119 kg N ha–1 in 1988. Residual nitrate was closely correlated with nitrate losses by leaching because water infiltration at 120 cm soil depth started 4 weeks after harvest (1987) or immediately after harvest (1988) and continued until early summer of the following year. The calculated amount of nitrate lost by leaching was strongly influenced by the method of calculation. During the winter of 1987/88 nitrate leaching ranged from 57–84 kg N ha–1 (suction cups) and 40–55 kg N ha–1 (CaCl2 extracts), respectively. The corresponding values for the winter of 1988/89 were 47–79 and 20–39 kg N ha–1, respectively. ei]Section editor: B E Clothier  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) has been gradually depleted from West African soils and now poses serious threats to food production. Many ways of increasing N supply (e.g. judicious use of inorganic fertilizers and nitrogen-fixing plants) have been tried in West African farming systems. Herbaceous and woody legumes commonly contribute 40–70 kg N ha–1 season. This represents about 30% of the total N applied as residues. Nevertheless and despite repeated demonstrations of the usefulness of green manures in enhancing soil fertility, their practices and adoption are still limited. Promiscuous soyabeans are being used to develop sustainable cropping systems in the moist savannah. Reliable estimates of N2 fixed by soyabeans and their residual N benefits to subsequent cereal crops in the savannah zone of southern Guinea have only infrequently been made. The actual amounts measured varied between 38 and 126 kg N ha–1 assuming that only seeds of soyabeans are removed from the plots, the net N accrual of soil nitrogen ranges between minus 8 kg N ha–1 and plus 47 kg N ha–1 depending on the soyabean cultivar. Residual soyabean N values of 10–24 kg N ha–1 (14–36% of the total N in maize) were obtained in a soyabean-maize rotation. Although cereal yields following legume cultivation have been attributed to greater N accumulation, our data show that the relative increase in maize N was smaller than the relative increase in dry-matter yield. Hence, the increased yields of maize following soybeans are not entirely due to the carry-over of N from soyabean residues (as well as to conservation of soil N) but to other rotational effects as well. It is thus clear that the Nbenefit of grain legumes to non-legumes is small compared to the level of N fertilizer use in more intensive cereal production systems but is nevertheless significant in the context of the low amounts of input in subsistence farming.  相似文献
