The assemblage of myxomycetes (plasmodial slime molds) associated with cloud forests of the Maquipucuna Cloud Forest Reserve in the western Andes was investigated. Within three study sites located along a gradient extending from 1200 to 2700 m above sea level, a clear pattern of decreasing myxomycete diversity and productivity with elevation was apparent. As such, these data conform to the pattern of "reverse diversity" for myxomycetes in the neotropics, with higher diversity for less mesic forest types than for more mesic forest types. Canonical correspondence analysis of myxomycete abundances in relation to microhabitat parameters revealed three major ecological assemblages: wood-, litter- and inflorescence-inhabiting species. All three assemblages include a number of specialized species, with the assemblage associated with litter being the most diverse and the one associated with inflorescences being the most distinctive. In addition, samples from the microhabitat represented by the cover of epiphyllic liverworts on living leaves regularly produce myxomycetes in moist chamber culture but with few sporocarps and no evidence of any specialized species. At least near ground level, bark-inhabiting (corticolous) myxomycetes are uncommon in the cloud forests sampled in the present study.  相似文献

The spatiotemporal distribution and dynamic changes of species composition of myxomycetes in humid subtropical forests of Houhe National Nature Reserve in southern China were studied by collecting samples of bark and ground litter within four seasons for isolation of myxomycetes in moist chamber cultures and by collecting fruiting bodies in the field from June to October. A total of 725 specimens of myxomycete fruiting bodies representing 77 species of 25 genera were registered, among them 302 records/51 species from field collections and 423 records obtained from 600 moist chamber cultures of ground litter and bark of living trees, which resulted in 35 and 39 species, respectively. Cornuvia serpula and Perichaena microspora were recorded for the first time in China. Both myxomycete species richness and diversity were significantly different in ground litter among sites and field collections among months. NMDS combined with Permanova indicated that the site had a greater impact on the myxomycete community of bark and litter than the season, while the month of field collections had a greater impact than the sampling sites. CCA and VPA analysis showed that the bark-inhabiting myxomycete species were mainly affected by spatial variables, while the litter-inhabiting and field collected species were more affected by climatic factors.  相似文献

The moist chamber culture technique was used to investigate the assemblages of myxomycetes (plasmodial slime moulds or myxogastrids) associated with the microhabitats represented by the bark surface of living black spruce (Picea mariana) trees and forest floor leaf litter in the Caribou–Poker Creek Research Watershed located approximately 50 km north of the city of Fairbanks. This study was carried out in the context of a larger project (Frostfire) that involved an experimental burn of a major portion of this watershed. Our study sites consisted of examples of the two major forest types (black spruce and birch–alder–quaking aspen) found within the watershed. Black spruce trees were sampled at three study sites (two burned sites and one control site), whereas samples of litter were obtained from four study sites (two control and two burned). The acidic bark of black spruce was found to support few myxomycetes, and only five species were recorded from a total of 81 moist chamber cultures prepared with samples of bark. The number of species (16) recorded from the 156 moist chamber cultures prepared with litter was appreciably higher. In general, numbers of species and records for litter and bark were fairly comparable in burned sites versus control sites, with the litter microhabitat of the black spruce forest type the major exception. One of the myxomycetes recovered from litter is a species new to science and is described herein as Diderma boreale.  相似文献

A rapid biodiversity assessment for myxomycetes (plasmodial slime moulds) was carried out during a two-week field trip to the Colorado Plateau (western U.S.A.). Due to the very arid climate of the region, the moist chamber culture technique formed a major part of the survey. A total of 1165 records belonging to 93 species and 1 variety from 27 genera was collected from the 433 moist chamber cultures prepared with the bark surface of living plants, litter and weathered dung of herbivorous animals. Only 31 specimens of 16 wood-inhabiting species were collected in the field, mainly at higher elevations. Subsequent moist chamber cultures produced numerous bark-inhabiting species that are usually considered to be rare, including Echinostelium coelocephalum, Protophysarum phloiogenum, and Macbrideola declinata. The most common litter-inhabiting species were Didymium mexicanum and Badhamia melanospora (mainly on decaying parts of Opuntia spp. and Agave spp.); the most abundant coprophilous species were Badhamia cf. apiculospora, Fuligo cinerea, Perichaena liceoides, and Licea tenera. Both, species richness and diversity, increase from sagebrush desert to pine-juniper open woodland and pine-oak woodland. The myxomycete biota of the Colorado Plateau displays a high level of similarity to those of other arid regions of the world (mean coefficient of community Cs = 0.67), differing considerably from temperate (mean Cs = 0.34), boreal (mean Cs = 0.49) and tropical biotas (mean Cs = 0.42).  相似文献

A number of recent studies have been directed towards developing a more complete understanding of myxomycete ecology throughout the world. However, the lack of comparative data obtained using standard methodologies makes the results of these studies somewhat speculative. The objective of this investigation was to examine the evidence of macroecological patterns in myxomycete assemblages in high-elevation areas of the northern Neotropics. For this, a series of study areas in Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, as well as two external study areas (one in the United States and the other in Thailand), were selected to compare the diversity-environment relationships exhibited by myxomycetes. Altogether, the 2592 moist chamber cultures prepared yielded a total of 1377 myxomycete records, representing 89 different species. A trend of decreasing species richness with decreasing latitude was observed for the species assemblages associated with the study areas in the Neotropics. As latitude increased, species assemblages in the Neotropical study areas became increasingly similar to the temperate study area. The difference in species richness between study areas in Mexico and Thailand, along with the results obtained for a series of macroclimatic patterns evaluated in the study areas of the Neotropical region, suggests that forest structure plays an important role in the structure of myxomycete assemblages. In contrast, soil chemical characteristics and the pH of the substrates present seem to be indirectly related to the diversity estimators used for analysis, suggesting that they are probably more important at a smaller ecological scale.  相似文献

Corticolous myxomycetes of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park were studied in relation to their association with certain tree species and height of occurrence in the forest canopy. Using the double-rope climbing method, bark was collected at 3 m increments to the tops of trees of five different species. Bark samples from 25 trees were used to prepare 418 moist chamber cultures maintained and observed 4 wk. Eighty-four myxomycete species were identified, including 30 species not known to occur in the park. Tree species, pH, height in tree and water-holding capacity of the bark samples were analyzed to determine the relationships of myxomycete assemblages cultured on the bark. Results suggested that myxomycete community composition among selected tree species were similar, but occurrence and abundance of certain species were related to differences in bark pH. Community similarity values among trees of different species show that trees with the most similar myxomycete communities also have the most similar bark pH. Most myxomycete species in this study have a pH optimum. No variation in species richness was detected at different heights in the trees, and most species were obtained at all heights up to at least 24 m. The water-holding capacity of the bark could not be correlated with species richness or abundance of myxomycetes that inhabit the bark of living trees. This is the first study to characterize myxomycete communities of tree canopies.  相似文献

This study compares the occurrence and distribution of myxomycete species in the canopy of living trees and neighboring grapevines. Corticolous myxomycetes of three temperate forests in southeastern USA were studied on six tree species (30 trees) and grapevines (30 vines) to determine distribution and occurrence of myxomycete species relating to geographic location, host species, and bark pH. The double-rope climbing technique was used to access the canopy and sample bark up to 16.5 m. Bark samples were examined in 580 moist chamber cultures and 44 myxomycete species were identified representing 21 genera, averaging 3.0 +/- 2.1 species per sample site. Jaccard's coefficient determined community similarity between five individuals of six tree species, Acer saccharum, Fraxinus americana, Liquidambar styraciflua, Liriodendron tulipifera, Platanus occidentalis and Tsuga canadensis, and neighboring grapevines, Vitis aestivalis and V. vulpina. Vertical variation in species richness was significantly different only for Platanus occidentalis and might be attributable to flaking of bark with increasing height in the canopy. Tsuga canadensis and neighboring grapevines had greatest community similarity. Cribraria violacea was observed on all tree and grapevine species except T. canadensis and neighboring grapevines. Occurrence and species assemblages of myxomycetes were associated with bark pH, not geographic location. Bark of V. aestivalis (pH 4.5) was more acidic than neighboring T. canadensis (pH 4.1), compared to grapevines of the same species neighboring other tree species. Results indicated that most species are not regionally restricted, and although some myxomycetes are associated with a certain pH range, others develop on any substratum. Future research protocols for corticolous myxomycetes should emphasize sampling adequate amounts of substrata in a local region from different host species that have a wide range of bark pH, ensuring a representative sample of species for an entire region.  相似文献

柳杉是中国特有树种,对于广泛分布于森林生态系统的黏菌而言,单纯的柳杉林是一种特殊的生境。为探索柳杉林中黏菌的物种多样性,本研究在武陵山区东北部的湖北省后河国家级自然保护区柳杉林样地中采集柳杉树皮和凋落物,在120个培养湿室中,发生黏菌的湿室68个,占56.67%。从两种基物上获得黏菌6目7科12属24种,优势种为混淆筛菌Cribraria confusa,相对丰度达到19.01%。柳杉林凋落物上发生的黏菌种类和数量高于柳杉树皮,凋落物和柳杉树皮上发生的黏菌共有种为4种,种群间的Sørensen相似性系数为Cs=0.333。在不同季节间,黏菌物种的群落组成与多样性也表现出差异,春季Shannon-Wiener多样性指数Hʹ=0.2987±0.1564,夏季Hʹ=0.1105±0.0949,秋季Hʹ=0.1968±0.0589,冬季Hʹ=0.2726±0.0875。黏菌物种数量发生最多的是春季和冬季,均有15种,仅在春季发生的黏菌物种为粗壮发菌Comatricha suksdorfii、鲜黄绒泡菌Physarum luteolum、暗红团网菌Arcyria denudata和极小无丝菌Licea minima,仅在冬季发生的黏菌物种为钙丝绒泡菌Physarum decipiens、小筛菌Cribraria microcarpa和暗褐无丝菌Licea belmontiana。典型对应分析(canonical correspondence analyses,CCA)表明,影响柳杉林中黏菌物种群落组成与多样性的主要环境因素是基物类型。  相似文献

A new species of Physarum (Myxomycetes), Physarum atacamense is described in this paper, and details are provided on its life cycle as observed in spore-to-spore culture in agar. The new species was collected during studies of the Atacama Desert in Chile. It has been collected directly in the field and isolated in moist chamber cultures prepared with material from an endemic cactus. The combination of characters that make this species unique in the genus are its large fusiform nodes of the capillitium, its long, bicolored stalk and the very dark brown and densely warted angular spores. The morphology of specimens of this myxomycete was examined with scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, and micrographs of relevant details and life cycle stages are included in this paper. The importance of resistant stages in the life cycle of this myxomycete is stressed, and the close association of this myxomycete with its plant substrates is discussed.  相似文献

The ecological distribution and seasonal patterns of occurrence of myxomycetes associated with the microhabitats represented by agricultural ground litter and forest floor litter were investigated in six study sites in northern Thailand during Oct 2004-Oct 2005. Both specimens that developed under natural conditions in the field and specimens obtained in moist chamber cultures were considered. Agricultural study sites were a banana plantation, a mango orchard and a sweet corn farm, whereas forest study sites consisted of a lowland forest, a midelevation forest and a highland forest. Seventy species of myxomycetes representing 20 genera were collected, with 34 species recorded during the dry season and 58 species recorded during the rainy season. Distinct differences were apparent for numbers of positive moist chambers, numbers of species recorded from moist chambers, numbers of species recorded as field collections and numbers of field collections when data obtained for the two seasons were compared. In the dry season only three species were collected in the field, but the percentage of positive moist chamber cultures (129/180 or 72%) and number of species recorded (33) from these cultures were high. In contrast, during the rainy season, 52 species of myxomycetes were collected in the field but only 15 species were recorded from the much lower percentage (75/180 or 42%) of positive moist chambers cultures.  相似文献

Although many myxomycetes inhabit leaf litter on the forest floor and have feeding stages in litter layers, there has been little understanding regarding how the different types of leaf litter in a forest influence myxomycetes to distribute. In this study, I focused on the microhabitat distribution of foliicolous myxomycetes within a local secondary forest that consisted of various vegetation types in warm-temperate western Japan. Newly defoliated leaf litters were collected from the ground surfaces of seven different sites and then incubated in trays at a forested site throughout the entire fruiting seasons (in situ incubation method). Forty-eight species of myxomycetes (with varieties treated as species) were found in a total of 4042 samples. Leaf litters derived from different vegetation sites yielded diverse myxomycete assemblages, i.e. the Quercus glauca site yielded the richest myxomycete community (26 species), followed by Quercus variabilis site (24), Prunus verecunda site (22), Cinnamomum camphora site (21), Castanopsis cuspidata site (18), Pinus densiflora site (7) and bamboo site (7). Several myxomycete species were found to be preferentially distributed in deciduous broadleaf or evergreen leaf litter. The fraction of vegetative cover of deciduous and evergreen trees influenced the species richness and diversity of myxomycetes. Leaf litter heterogeneity derived from forest vegetation and defoliation season influenced the myxomycete distribution and species diversity. Research using in situ incubation method demonstrated that heterogeneous myxomycete microhabitats are distributed at a small spatial scale in a local forest.  相似文献

Myxomycetes associated with a high-elevation (>3000 m) oak forest in the Talamanca Range of Costa Rica were studied for 7 mo. Field collections were supplemented with collections obtained from moist chamber cultures prepared with samples of bark and ground litter of Quercus costaricensis. Various microenvironmental parameters including pH, substrate moisture and diameter, height above the ground and canopy openness were recorded for each field collection, whereas macroenvironmental data for temperature and precipitation were obtained from a meteorological station near the study area. Niche breadth and niche overlap indices were calculated to assess possible resource partitioning by myxomycetes. Thirty-seven species were recorded, including 11 new records for Costa Rica, eight for Central America and one for the neotropics. Both PCA and NMS multivariate analyses indicated that pH and height above the ground explained most of the observed variation, although substrate diameter also seemed to be an important factor. Precipitation showed an inverse correlation with the number of fruitings, confirming its importance as a macroenvironmental factor. Niche overlap values were not higher for closely related species and values for niche breadths were similar for most of the more common species, suggesting that most members of the assemblage of myxomycetes present in the study site are ecological generalists.  相似文献

湖北省宜昌市兴山县地处北亚热带,位于秦巴山区向江汉平原的东延区域,属“三峡库区”,气候湿润,植被主要为常绿阔叶与落叶阔叶混交林,适宜黏菌生长。为全面掌握该县黏菌的物种资源组成,从而加强对“三峡库区”生物多样性的认识,在2016年10月至2018年8月,于不同季节在该县进行了10次黏菌多样性调查和标本采集,同时收集基物进行湿室培养,共获得黏菌标本215份,根据形态特征鉴定为6目9科25属56种。黄褐筛菌Cribraria aurantiaca Schrad.、多变无丝菌Licea variabilis Schrad.和盖碗菌Perichaena corticalis (Batsch) Rostaf.等25种为湖北省首次记录,宽肋筛菌Cribraria martini Nann.-Bremek.为中国亚热带地区首次报道的物种。对不同生境中黏菌分布状况的分析表明,该地黏菌物种发生最多的月份为6月,发生最多的基物为腐木,在不同海拔高度中黏菌的分布存在差异。  相似文献

A new stipitate species of myxomycete of the genus Licea is described based on material from arid areas in Argentina and Chile. It was isolated from moist chamber cultures and found fruiting on field collections, usually on the same substrate, Puya sp. (Bromeliaceae). It differs from all described species in the genus in that it has stipitate sporocarps with dehiscence by defined preformed platelets and a smooth inner peridial surface. The new species has polyhedral, yellow spores with a uniform thick spore wall and dense warts except on irregularly dispersed raised bands with fewer warts, visible by SEM, an ornamentation not previously observed in the genus. Life-cycle events are described and illustrated, from germination to sporulation, based on moist chamber and agar cultures. The morphology of the myxomycete specimens was examined with scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, and both light and SEM micrographs of relevant details are included.  相似文献

Myxomycetes (plasmodial slime molds) are abundant protist predators that feed on bacteria and other microorganisms, thereby playing important roles in terrestrial nutrient cycling. Despite their significance, little is known about myxomycete communities and the extent to which they are affected by nutrient availability. We studied the influence of long‐term addition of N, P, and K on the myxomycete community in a lowland forest in the Republic of Panama. In a previous study, microbial biomass increased with P but not N or K addition at this site. We hypothesized that myxomycetes would increase in abundance in response to P but that they would not respond to the sole addition of N or K. Moist chamber cultures of leaf litter and small woody debris were used to quantify myxomycete abundance. We generated the largest myxomycete dataset (3,381 records) for any single locality in the tropics comprised by 91 morphospecies. In line with our hypothesis, myxomycete abundance increased in response to P addition but did not respond to N or K. Community composition was unaffected by nutrient treatments. This work represents one of very few large‐scale and long‐term field studies to include a heterotrophic protist highlighting the feasibility and value in doing so.  相似文献

A list of myxomycetes collected in Pantelleria, a volcanic island located 110 km southwest of the island of Sicily (Italy), is presented with data on distribution. Forty-nine taxa were identified, 38 of which are new for Sicily. Elucidating the factors determining the occurrence of florivorous organisms is an essential step for comprehending arthropod–plant interactions, especially when considering florivores that use flowers/inflorescences as microhabitats. In this study, we characterize the interaction between florivorous thrips (Thysanoptera) and Palicourea rigida (Rubiaceae), a distylous hummingbird-pollinated shrub. We investigated the relative role of different factors in determining thrips occurrence in the flower and inflorescence microhabitats. Furthermore, we experimentally examined the protective role of corolla influencing thrips exploration of floral buds. Frankliniella musaeperda (Thripidae) was the only species recorded on P. rigida, feeding on floral tissue, pollen and nectar. Thrips occurrence was not related to distyly, but rather to floral stage. Open flowers presented the highest abundance of thrips, followed by senescent flowers and then buds. The experimental opening of buds translated in increased thrips occurrence, indicating that F. musaeperda manage to explore the microhabitat offered by the floral chamber, as long as there is an opening in the corolla. In inflorescences, thrips abundance was negatively related to the number of ants visiting extrafloral nectaries. We found that the marked difference between floral morphs of distylous plants is not necessarily reflected in the abundance of florivores. Thrips seek for floral cavities, preferentially those with fresh tissue, which may confer nutrient-rich food and protection. Buds also provide this; however, the enclosed petals are an effective barrier against F. musaeperda entrance. At inflorescence scale, presence of mutualistic ants in high numbers can drive away these flower-feeding insects. Despite the abundance of thrips in the flowers, there was no evidence of any functional relationship, either of pollination for flowers or of breeding for insects. We demonstrate here that in the flower/inflorescence microhabitat, structural and biotic factors play a key role in the exploitation and occupation by insect florivores.  相似文献

The ecological community of myxomycetes and myxomycete-like organisms (MMLO) in the canopy of living deciduous trees was studied in a riparian deciduous forest at Leipzig, Germany. A systematic survey carried out with a total of 146 moist chamber cultures resulted in 386 records of 37 taxa, with 32 myxomycetes, two myxobacteria, two protostelids and the fruit body forming ciliate Sorogena stoianovitchae, the latter recorded for the first time for Europe. With 94% of all cultures positive for MMLO, these organisms are present consistently in the investigated sections of white-rotten twigs attached to living trees at 10-30 m above the ground. Our sampling recovered a majority of the likely species, with 37 out of the 42-45 predicted according to a species-accumulation curve and two other estimators of species richness. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling revealed pH, water-holding capacity and stage of decay to explain most of the variation in species distribution. Arcyria cinerea and Perichaena depressa as the most common species occurred in 32% and 29% of all samples, respectively. Viewing the sampled twigs as habitat islands and a single spore as sufficient to establish a population, a simulation program assuming a random spore rain estimated an average of 0.4 and 0.35 spore hits per twig as necessary to explain the observed frequencies. This is matched by the potential productivity of the substrate. All fruit bodies from the cultured twigs would be able to create a spore rain of 86 (A. cinerea) or 40 (P. depressa) spore hits per twig when dispersed evenly over the plot. The terminal fall velocity of spores was measured, revealing that it took about 5 h for a spore to land (30 m) in still air and indicating high dispersal ability for canopy-inhabiting MMLO.  相似文献
