Theoretical and experimental evidence indicates that females copy the mate choice of other females under certain conditions. In all mate choice copying experiments with fish to date, females were allowed to copy the choice of a model female immediately after the focal female had observed a model female interacting with a male. It is not known whether females continue to copy the choice of the model female after a longer interval. We investigated whether sailfin molly females also copy the choice of other females when they are prevented from copying immediately after observing a model female next to a previously nonpreferred male. We performed three copying experiments in which females could copy the choice of the model female immediately after, 1 h after or 1 day after observing the model female next to the previously nonpreferred male. In control experiments, we tested whether females chose consistently when they had no opportunity to copy, and whether females showed shoaling behaviour under these conditions. Females copied the choice of the model female immediately after, 1 h after and even 1 day after the observation of the model female interacting with the previously nonpreferred male. Females chose consistently between males when they had no opportunity to copy, and females did not shoal under these conditions. We conclude that females remember individual males with whom a model female had interacted, even after 1 day. Although females of numerous species possess genetically-basedpreferences for certain male trails and male preferentiallywith males possessing these traits, recent theoretical and experimentalevidence indicates that they may also copy (imitate) the matechoices of other females under certain circumstances. Such mate-choicecopying is expected to be most prevalent when females have theopportunity to observe the mate choices of others and when matechoice is costly to females. One potential direct fitness costof mate choice is increased individual risk of mortality dueto predation. Here, we investigate for the first time the effectof increasing the apparent risk of predation on the tendencyof females to copy the experimentally staged mate choice ofanother female. Using adult female guppies (Poecilia reticulata)originating from a Trinidadian population that experiences arelatively high fish predation pressure, we first establishthat they possess a preference for the more brighdy coloredof two simultaneously presented males in the absence of bothmate-copying opportunity and an immediate threat of predation.However, most females reversed their initial mate preferencewhen given an opportunity to copy the mate preference of anotherfemale in the absence of predation threat The proportion offemales reversing their preference when given the opportunityto do so was not affected by increasing the apparent risk of(fish) predation. This result may be owing either to femaleguppies tending to copy the mate choice of others whenever theopportunity arises because the benefits of doing so accrue irrespectiveof the ambient risk of predation or to females choosing randomlybetween males with respect to their color pattern in the presenceof the predator irrespective of mate-copying opportunity. Thesetwo explanations for the apparent lack of an effect of predationrisk on mate-choice copying per se are both plausible but unfortunatelycould not be easily distinguished here. It may thus be possible,and interesting, that individual female guppies chose randomlybetween the available males in the presence of the predatorbut otherwise copied the choice of others when given the opportunityto do so.  相似文献

One potential opportunity cost associated with direct assessment of males by females is lost foraging time. It has been hypothesized previously that females may reduce their mate-assessment time by copying the known mate choice of other females. If mate copying reduces mate-assessment time, then females that engage in copying behaviour should have more time available for foraging. In this study, we experimentally investigated the effects of hunger, and thus the immediate need for energy, on the tendency of female guppies, Poecilia reticulata, to copy the mate choice of others. We manipulated the hunger level of individual females in four different treatments by either depriving them of any food or giving them unlimited access to food for 24 h or 48 h prior to testing their mating preference. Each female was then allowed to choose between two stimulus males, matched for size and colour, after having viewed another female (the model) apparently choose one of the males as a mate. We predicted that hungry female guppies should be more likely to engage in mate-choice copying than more recently fed females, when given the opportunity. Contrary to our a priori prediction, only the most well-fed females (with prior access to feed for 48 h) copied the mate choice of the model female significantly more often than expected by chance. Females in each of the other three treatments chose randomly between the two stimulus males presented.  相似文献

Mate choice copying has been documented extensively in the laboratory with almost no supporting data available from studies in the wild. We investigated male and female mate choice copying in a wild population of the sailfin molly, a species that shows copying in the laboratory. We set up two upside-down plastic tanks in a river, with two jars of water on each tank. In male mate choice trials we placed a female in one jar and a male in the other on one tank and a female in one jar on the other tank, leaving the last jar empty. In female mate choice trials we presented a male and a female on one tank and a male and an empty jar on the other. Males preferred to associate with a female adjacent to a male rather than a lone female and females preferred to associate with a male adjacent to a female rather than a lone male. In two controls for shoaling behaviour we presented two males on one side of the set-up and one male on the other or two females versus one female. These controls showed that shoaling behaviour could not explain the male and female preference. Thus both sexes of the sailfin molly show mate choice copying in the wild, much as they do in laboratory studies. At least in this species, mate choice copying is not a laboratory artefact. Mate choice is linked to costs such as time and energy effort or a higher risk of predation. Furthermore, reproduction with a partner of lower than average quality will reduce an individual’s fitness. Copying the mate choice of others is assumed to reduce such costs. Most studies dealing with mate-choice copying focused on females, as they are usually expected to invest more into reproduction. However, in species where males provide brood care both sexes face high costs. Little is known about mate-choice copying in such mating systems. Male three-spined sticklebacks build nests and care for the offspring alone, facing a high-reproductive investment. Thus, one would expect that both males and females copy the mate choice of others. We gave male and female sticklebacks the opportunity to court either a partner that was visibly courted by another individual or a partner that was not visibly courted. Both spent significantly more time courting next to con-specifics after another individual has visibly courted them. Habituation effects, territorial defence or shoaling behaviour as alternative explanations were excluded by control experiments. The adaptive significance of mate-choice copying is not well understood. The results of this study indicate that in sticklebacks both sexes may reduce the costs of mate choice by copying the preferences of others.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that mate choicecopying is a viable mating strategy under certain conditions.Copying experiments in fish have been conducted primarily inthe laboratory, except for one study conducted in the fieldunder artificial conditions. We investigated whether in a wildpopulation of the coral reef whitebelly damselfish (Amblyglyphidodonleucogaster) females copy the choice of other females. Femalespreferentially spawn with males that have recently mated. Todetermine if the presence of new eggs in the nest was the reasonfemales chose mates or whether females were mate choice copying,we conducted egg-switching experiments. Eggs from males thatrecently mated were donated to males that had no eggs. If femalesare mate choice copying, then donor males with no eggs in thenest should continue to receive additional eggs. If femalesare using the presence of new eggs as the criterion for matechoice, then foster males with new eggs should receive additionaleggs. We found that donor males received new eggs significantlymore often than expected. More females mated with donor malesthan foster males. Furthermore, females preferentially choseto mate with males whom they had seen mating with another female.Females appear to remember the mate choice of other femalesand choose to mate with those same males even after 1 day. Theseresults suggest that females may be copying the mating decisionof other females rather than choosing males based on the presenceof new eggs in the nest.  相似文献

When females choose among males they often accept one male asa potential partner and reject others as nonacceptable mates.The rejection of "wrong" males and the acceptance of "right"males are equally important processes in mate choice. Sailfinmolly females have been shown to copy the mate choice of otherfemales when accepting a male. The present study used videoplaybacks to test whether or not sailfin molly females copythe rejection of a male. Test females spent significantly lesstime with previously attractive males after having observedtheir rejection by other females. Eight of 15 females even reversedtheir choice and preferred the male they had previously foundunattractive. In control experiments, we showed that neitherinconsistency in female mate choice nor escape behavior of afemale in a nonsexual context could explain these results. Many models have investigated how the process of speciation may occur in sympatry. In these models, individuals are either asexual or mate choice is determined by very simple rules. Females, for example, may be assumed either to compare their phenotype to that of a potential mate, preferring to mate with similar males (phenotype matching), or to possess preference genes that determine which male phenotype they prefer. These rules often do not reflect the mate-choice rules found in empirical studies. In this paper, we compare these two modes of female choice with various types of sexual imprinting. We examine the efficacy of different mate-choice behavior in causing divergence in male traits under simple deterministic one-locus population genetic models as well as under polygenic, individual-based simulations based on the models of Dieckmann and Doebeli (1999). We find that the inheritance mechanism of mate choice can have a large effect on the ease of sympatric speciation. When females imprint on their mothers, the result of the model is similar to phenotype matching, where speciation can occur fairly easily. When females imprint on their fathers or imprint obliquely, speciation becomes considerably less likely. Finally, when females rely on preference genes, male trait evolution occurs easily, but the correlation between trait and preference can be weak, and interpreting these results as speciation may be suspect.  相似文献

Female mate-choice copying is a social learning phenomenon whereby a female's observation of a successful sexual interaction between a male and another female increases her likelihood of subsequently preferring that male. Although mate-choice copying has been documented in several vertebrate species, to our knowledge it has not yet been investigated in insects. Here, we investigated whether female mate-choice copying occurs in the fruit fly Drosophila serrata, a model system for the study of mate preferences and the sexual selection they generate. We used two complementary experiments in which focal females were given a choice between two males that differed in either their apparent (as determined visually by the focal female) or actual recent mating success. Mate-choice copying was evaluated by testing whether focal females mated more frequently with the ‘preferred’ male as opposed to the other male. In both experiments, however, we found no evidence for mate-choice copying. We discuss possible reasons for the apparent absence of mate-choice copying in this species.  相似文献

Individuals are often restricted to indirect cues when assessing the mate value of a potential partner. Females of some species have been shown to copy each other’s choice; in other words, the probability of a female choosing a particular male increases if he has already been chosen by other females. Recently it has been suggested that mate-choice copying could be an important aspect of human mate choice as well. We tested one of the hypotheses, the so-called wedding ring effect—that women would prefer men who are already engaged or married—in a series of live interactions between men and women. The results show that women do not find men signaling engagement, or being perceived as having a partner, more attractive or higher in socioeconomic status. Furthermore, signs of engagement did not influence the women’s reported willingness to engage in short-term or long-term relationships with the men. Thus, this study casts doubt on some simplified theories of human mate-choice copying, and alternative, more complex scenarios are outlined and discussed. In some species, female mate choice is non‐independent as, under certain circumstances, females may copy the mate choice of other nearby females. One standard experimental protocol used to test for mate‐choice copying is the mate‐choice ‘reversal’ protocol. In this protocol, a focal female is allowed to choose between two males as potential mates and then is presented with an opportunity to see another female (i.e. the model female) choose the male that she did not initially choose. The focal is subsequently allowed to again choose between the same set of males. An observed reversal of her initial choice in this second preference test has been previously interpreted as evidence for mate‐choice copying. Alternatively, it has recently been proposed that environmental events, such as seeing the mate choice of nearby females that occur within the visual field of a female actively engaged in mate assessment, may ‘disrupt’ her decision‐making behavior and consequently alter the consistency of her mating preference, and may thus cause mate‐choice reversals. The disruption hypothesis predicts that if a model female is placed near the male that the focal female initially chose, the latter's mate preference would be disrupted and she would subsequently and consistently prefer the male that she initially rejected. Here we examined whether the disruption hypothesis explains mate‐choice copying in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Our results do not support this hypothesis, but rather provide further support for mate‐choice copying in the guppy.  相似文献

If mate choice is costly, an individual may reduce the costsof choice by observing and copying the mate choice of others.Although copying has received much attention during the past10 years, evidence of copying is not very strong, partly becauseof problems with distinguishing copying from other mechanismscreating similar mating patterns. I conducted an aquarium experimentusing the deep-snouted pipefish Syngnathus typhle, a specieswith reversed sex roles and mutual mate choice. I tested whethercopying occurred both during male and female mate choice. Theresults showed that males, but not females, displayed more towardan individual, which they perceived as popular among others,and this was interpreted as male mate choice copying. Whilebeing the first evidence of copying in a sex-role–reversedspecies, the sex difference in behavior mirrors the sex-rolepattern and begs the question whether we should predict copyingonly in females in other species with mutual choice but conventionalsex roles.  相似文献

Individuals providing misleading information to conspecifics may benefit from deception at the receiver's expense. A recent study (Plath et al., Curr Biol 18:1138–1141, 2008c) suggested that male Atlantic mollies (Poecilia mexicana) deceive rival males about their preferred mate. Here, we contrasted potentially deceptive behavior in surface-dwelling P. mexicana males to males of the cave form of that species (the cave molly). Unlike many other cavefishes, cave mollies have retained functional eyes and readily respond to visual stimuli. Males could interact freely with two females (large and small), and an audience male was visually presented during the second part of the tests. When observed during mate choice, males reduced their mating activity, but this reduction was significantly weaker in cave mollies. Overall, the expression of mating preferences (determined through frequencies of nipping and thrusting) declined in front of an audience; again, this effect was significantly weaker in the cave form. Reduced sexual activity and reduced expression of mating preferences can be interpreted as an attempt of the focal male to avoid unintended interception of information by the rival male. Surface but not cave molly males directed their first sexual interaction (when being observed by the rival male) towards the initially non-preferred female, suggesting that surface-dwelling males deceive rival males about their mating preferences. Deception by the focal males may be an adaptation to avoid sperm competition, since other males in their social environment may use public information and copy the focal male's mate choice. It seems that sending deceptive signals is evolutionarily regressed in the cave molly, since mate choice copying is unlikely to occur under naturally dark conditions, and also the potential to deceive rivals about mating preferences is probably very limited.  相似文献

We staged female mate choice trials between pairs of males andrepeated the process for each female to determine the repeatabilityof female preference for males in red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus)in the first and second half of the breeding season. We measuredmale morphological traits (the size and color of the comb andthe brightness of the hackle feathers) that females are knownto use in choosing a mate. In the first half of the breedingseason, females showed repeatability in their choices of matewith respect to the male's comb characters. Females did notshow a repeatable preference with respect to male hackle feathers,and we found no repeatability of mate choice in the second halfof the season. Recent experimental and theoretical evidence suggests that social factors may play an important role in female choice and sexual selection. This is in contrast to the assumption made by most classical sexual selection models that female preferences are entirely determined by genetic factors. This study examined whether female preferences in the poeciliid fish Perugia's Limia (Limia perugiae) are reversible through (i) mate‐choice copying (imitative) behavior, or (ii) a disruption effect (reduced consistency of female preference in response to disruption). Females in binary choice trials were given a mate‐choice copying opportunity by exposing them to a second, model female displaying a preference for a male that was not initially preferred. Females were found to reverse their initial preference significantly more often when presented with an opportunity to observe the model female then in the absence of such an opportunity. In separate trials, females were presented with the opportunity to observe a model female displaying a preference for a male that was initially preferred. No significant difference was observed in the number of reversals between treatments in which females were presented with a copying opportunity that contradicted their initial preference and one that reinforced it. Our results suggest that mate‐choice copying does not contribute significantly to female preferences in L. perugiae and that disruption may reduce the ability of females to choose consistently.  相似文献

Recent experimental work on guppies (Poecilia reticulata) hasexamined the strength of genetic and cultural (copying) factorsin determining female mate choice. Using females from a populationwith a heritable preference for the amount of orange body colorpossessed by males, prior work discovered that a threshold differencein orange color among males existed below which females wouldchoose a less orange male if they observed another female choosethat male, but above which they consistently preferred the moreorange of the males, regardless of whether they viewed anotherfemale prefer the less orange male. I tested whether this thresholdcan be shifted by increasing the amount of mate-copying informationavailable to a female. I demonstrate that when a female hasthe opportunity to see two different model females independentlyprefer the less orange of two males or a single female neara drab male for a longer period of time (twice as long as inprior work), the observer female prefers this drab male evenwhen males dramatically differ in orange coloration.  相似文献

Female choices of males, and how these choices are influenced by ecological and social factors, have been studied extensively. However, little is known about the effects of age and breeding experience on female mating decisions. We used video techniques to examine female mate choice in guppies based on the area of carotenoid (orange) pigmentation on the body. Females were presented with paired images of males, one ornamented and the other plain. Visual preference for each male was measured. Age-related changes in the criteria of choice were examined by comparing the responses of the same mature but sexually inexperienced 6-mo-old and 12-mo-old females. Effects of breeding experience on female choice were examined by comparing mate preferences of 12-mo-old female virgins with their preferences after they had mated and produced a brood. Female preferences for ornamented males with large areas of carotenoid pigment changed with age but not with mating experience. Six-month-old virgin females preferred ornamented males, whereas 12-mo-old virgin and postpartum females did not differentiate between males based on orange coloration. The results are discussed in light of life-history theory and have important implications for studies of sexual selection as well as for the design of mate-choice studies.  相似文献

Mate choice by females may be influenced by both advertizing traits of males, and behaviour of other females. Here, a simple genetic and behavioural model studies the advantages of mate‐choice copying. From a genetic point of view, a female preferring to copy others’ mate choice adopts a prudent strategy, because her offspring will inherit the same alleles from their father as the other young in the population. The model predicts that a female should copy others’ mate‐choice, unless she encounters a relatively more attractive male than the one she has observed mating, and the attractiveness of the male reflects his genotype. For low or moderate reliability of male signalling, mate‐copying is always predicted, even if the newcoming male is more attractive than the first male. This effect is attenuated, however, when the number of females that have already chosen the first male increases.  相似文献

Mate-choice copying by females has been reported in fishes (e.g., guppies) and lekking birds. Presumably, females assess males' quality using both information from direct observation of males and information acquired by observing other females' choices. Here, we study mathematically the conditions under which mate-choice copying is advantageous on the basis of Bayesian decision theory. A female may observe the mate choice of another female, called the model female, who has performed an optimal choice based on her own judgment. The conditions required for the focal female to choose the same mate as that chosen by the model female should depend on the male's appearance to her, the reliability of her own judgment of male quality, and the reliability of the model females. When three or more females are involved, the optimal mate choice critically depends on whether multiple model females make decisions independently or they themselves copy the choices of others. If two equally reliable females choose different males, the choice of the second female, made knowing the choice of the first, should have a stronger effect on the choice of the third (focal) female. This "last-choice precedence" should be tested experimentally.  相似文献

Previous work on guppies has shown that small females copy the mate‐choice decisions of larger females, but not vice versa. We extended this work to ask, when put in a situation where they have little information available to distinguish between males, whether large females will also copy large females, and small females will copy small ones. Using Dugatkin's criteria, our study suggests that large females copy the mate‐choice decisions of large females, that small females might copy the decisions of large females, but that neither small nor large females copy small females. Our results provide support for the notion that females are more likely to copy when they perceive that there is an imbalance between their ability to assess a male's quality and the ability of another female to assess that male. However, we did not find evidence of mate copying using criteria used by other researchers.  相似文献
