Southern African forests are naturally fragmented yet hold a disproportionately high number of bird species. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were measured in feathers from birds captured at Woodbush (n = 27 species), a large afromontane forest in the eastern escarpment of Limpopo province, South Africa. The δ13C signatures of a range of forest plants were measured to categorise the food base. Most plants sampled, including two of five grass species, had δ13C signatures typical of a C3 photosynthetic pathway (?29.5 ± 1.9‰). Three grass species had a C4 signature (?12.0 ± 0.6‰). Most bird species had δ13C values representing a predominantly C3‐based diet (?24.8‰ to ?20.7‰). δ15N values were as expected, with higher levels of enrichment associated with a greater proportion of dietary animal matter. The cohesive isotopic niche defining most species (n = 22), where the ranges for δ13C and δ15N were 2.4‰ and 3.4‰, respectively, highlight the difficulties in understanding diets of birds in a predominantly C3‐based ecosystem using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. However, variation in isotopic values between and within species provides insight into possible niche width and the use of resources by different birds within a forest environment.  相似文献

We measured deuterium isotope ratios (δDf) in primary feathers to distinguish first‐year from older Pectoral Sandpipers Calidris melanotos captured in Barrow, Alaska, during the breeding season. δDf showed a distinct bimodal distribution, and model‐based clustering placed the δDf values into two non‐overlapping groups. More negative δDf corresponded to Arctic areas, probably identifying first‐year birds with Arctic‐grown juvenile feathers retained from the previous year. The more positive values corresponded to lower latitudes, possibly identifying older birds that grew their feathers at non‐Arctic latitudes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Avian age‐class discrimination is typically based on the completeness of the first prebasic molt. In several calidrid sandpiper species, juvenal flight feathers grown on Arctic breeding grounds are retained through the first three migrations. Thereafter, flight feathers are grown annually at temperate migratory stopover sites during the fall or on the subtropical wintering grounds. Standard methods for distinguishing age classes of sandpipers rely on a combination of traits, including body plumage, coloration of protected inner median covert edges, and extent of flight feather wear. We tested the ability of stable hydrogen isotope ratios in flight feathers (δDf) to distinguish young birds in their first winter through second fall from older adults in three calidrid sandpiper species, Western (Calidris mauri), Least (C. minutilla), and Semipalmated (C. pusilla) sandpipers. We compared the apparent reliability of the isotope approach to that of plumage‐based aging. The large expected differences in δDf values of flight feathers grown at Arctic versus non‐Arctic latitudes enabled use of this technique to discriminate between age‐classes. We determined δDf values of known Arctic‐grown feathers from juveniles that grew their flight feathers on the breeding grounds. Flight feather δDf values of southward‐migrating adults showed bimodal distributions for all three species. Negative values overlapped with species‐specific juvenile values, identifying putative second fall birds with high‐latitude grown juvenal feathers retained from the previous year. The more positive values identified older adults who grew their feathers at mid‐ and low latitudes. Importantly, δDf analysis successfully identified first‐winter and second‐fall birds not detected by plumage‐based aging. Flight feather wear alone was a poor basis for age classification because scores overlapped extensively between putative second fall birds and older adults. Flight feather hydrogen isotope analysis enables more definitive assignment of age classes when standard plumage methods are unreliable.  相似文献

We used the stable isotope composition of body feathers to show the extraordinarily varying regional provenance of an irruptive conifer seed specialist, the common crossbill Loxia curvirostra . In the boreal region of the western Palearctic, this species specialises on the seeds of Norway spruce Picea abies . The patterns of deuterium in the feathers of migrant common crossbills collected in Britain suggested that irruptions in different years originated in widely separated regions of the Palearctic boreal forest. The birds from some irruptions were relatively narrow-billed compared with those from others, but bill width was not correlated with deuterium values. However, deuterium values did co-vary with the dates that the irruptions reached Britain, with the lowest deuterium levels in years with the latest arrivals. This finding was consistent with the idea that birds with low values came further, from regions far to the northeast. This pattern was very different from that found in irruptive northern bullfinches Pyrrhula p. pyrrhula which had larger variation in deuterium values within an irruption, suggestive of a much more widespread provenance. It is argued that the difference between species is the result of their differing foraging ecology. Bullfinches have a varied summer diet and, unlike common crossbills, do not concentrate regionally to breed where a single type of food is available that year.  相似文献

The analysis of the non-exchangeable hydrogen isotope ratio (δ2Hne) in carbohydrates is mostly limited to the structural component cellulose, while simple high-throughput methods for δ2Hne values of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) such as sugar and starch do not yet exist. Here, we tested if the hot vapor equilibration method originally developed for cellulose is applicable for NSC, verified by comparison with the traditional nitration method. We set up a detailed analytical protocol and applied the method to plant extracts of leaves from species with different photosynthetic pathways (i.e., C3, C4 and CAM). δ2Hne of commercial sugars and starch from different classes and sources, ranging from ?157.8 to +6.4‰, were reproducibly analysed with precision between 0.2‰ and 7.7‰. Mean δ2Hne values of sugar are lowest in C3 (?92.0‰), intermediate in C4 (?32.5‰) and highest in CAM plants (6.0‰), with NSC being 2H-depleted compared to cellulose and sugar being generally more 2H-enriched than starch. Our results suggest that our method can be used in future studies to disentangle 2H-fractionation processes, for improving mechanistic δ2Hne models for leaf and tree-ring cellulose and for further development of δ2Hne in plant carbohydrates as a potential proxy for climate, hydrology, plant metabolism and physiology.  相似文献

Unlike the annual bi‐directional movements of over 200 bird species within the Palaearctic–Afrotropical region, irregular movements such as irruptive migration with a low degree of philopatry are reported for a variety of species depending on highly seasonal and unpredictable resources. These flexible movements allow for itinerant breeding – consecutive breeding attempts in two or more geographically different regions during the same annual reproductive cycle. In order to illuminate migratory and breeding strategies of the erratic wetland species Baillon's crake Zapornia pusilla across the W‐Palaearctic–Afrotropical region, we used a set of six DNA microsatellites as well as δ2Hf values of individuals sampled at one African and four European breeding sites. We investigated the degree of genetic population structure within and among different sites and assigned individuals’ feathers of unknown origin to their probable moulting (hence breeding) site using a likelihood approach. We found three genetic clusters, differentiating into one ‘European’ and two ‘African’ populations. Connectivity between the sampling sites was probable as genetic ‘African’ individuals were found in breeding conditions in Europe and vice versa. Likewise, assigned moulting locations based on δ2H isoscapes suggested trans‐continental movements as well as moulting and possibly breeding by the same individual both in African and European breeding grounds. Both isotopic and genetic data reveal the Baillon's crake pursue a complex migration and breeding strategy, allowing as well for irruptive movements and itinerant breeding across the W‐Palaearctic–Afrotropical region. However, a better knowledge about the species’ distribution as well as a more comprehensive data set, including samples from the southern and eastern boundaries of the distribution area would be necessary to improve the spatial resolution to the precision required to unambiguously infer migration directions and extent of exchange between African and European breeding grounds.  相似文献

Over much of Europe, Common Crossbills Loxia curvirostra depend primarily on the seeds of Norway Spruce Picea abies , and their breeding and movement patterns are governed largely by the cropping patterns of this tree species. Good cone crops occur only every few years in particular areas, but in different years in different areas. The main period of movement is in summer, when the previous year's crop is coming to an end, and a new crop is forming in different areas. In years when the Norway Spruce crop is poor over a wide area, and when Common Crossbills are abundant, they leave the boreal forest in large numbers, and appear as irruptive migrants in southwest Europe, with at least 40 invasions reaching Britain in the 120-year period 1881–2000. On irruptions the main migration axis is from northeast to southwest or west. Recoveries of birds ringed mainly in Germany confirm that these birds do not return to the boreal forest in northern Russia in the same calendar year as their irruption, but do so only in a later calendar year, when a new Norway Spruce crop is becoming available. The findings agree with an earlier interpretation of Common Crossbill movements, but not with an alternative hypothesis that irrupting Common Crossbills return to their region of origin in the same calendar year as the outward movement. Recoveries also suggest that some individual Common Crossbills may have bred in widely separated localities in different years (records up to 3170 km apart), and sometimes in localities far removed from their natal sites (records up to 2950 km apart).  相似文献

The study of migratory connectivity is rapidly growing in ornithology, as is the technology used to measure it. While use of extrinsic markers, such as archival tags, is becoming more prevalent, for many small species the best tool available for tracking birds remains intrinsic markers, such as stable‐hydrogen isotope ratios (δ2H). Many researchers have raised concerns that spatial and temporal environmental variation introduces a large amount of error into isotope‐based assignments, limiting their utility. Here, using feathers, we sought to address these issues in developing δ2H base maps for assigning pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca of known origin to 15 sites across the breeding range (approx. 4 020 800 km2). We evaluated the effects of including random site variation and year‐specific precipitation δ2H (δ2HP) maps on assignments, compared to using mean annual growing season δ2Hp and no site effects. We found a positive correlation between feather δ2H (δ2HF) and mean annual δ2HP, resulting from large scale geographic variation. Repeatability of feather δ2H for individuals sampled in multiple years was strong overall, but variable among populations. Annual variation in δ2HP explained 21% of within individual variation in δ2HF. Neither year‐ nor site‐specific methods improved assignment precision or accuracy. All three methods assigned flycatchers of unknown origin captured at an African overwintering site to similar breeding areas. However, methods using long‐term means of δ2Hp assigned birds more precisely than year‐specific methods. Our results suggest that annual variation in this system is primarily a result of food web or individual level processes and that random site effects are not strong enough to drastically impact accuracy. We conclude that improvements in isotope based geographic assignments will rely on the addition of prior information, such as relative abundance in a Bayesian framework, or additional intrinsic markers.  相似文献

In the face of accelerating ecological change to the world's oceans, seabirds are some of the best bio‐indicators of marine ecosystem function. However, unravelling ecological changes that pre‐date modern monitoring programmes remains challenging. Using stable isotope analysis of feathers and regurgitants collected from sooty terns (Onychoprion fuscatus) nesting at a major Atlantic colony, we reconstructed a long‐term dietary time series from 1890 to the present day and show that a significant dietary shift occurred during the second half of the twentieth century coinciding with an apparent population collapse of approximately 84%. After correcting for the “Suess Effect,” δ13C in feathers declined by ~1.5‰ and δ15N by ~2‰ between the 1890s and the present day, indicating that birds changed their diets markedly over the period of population decline. Isotopic niches were equally wide before and after the population collapse but isotopic mixing models suggest that birds have grown ever more reliant on nutrient‐poor squid and invertebrates as teleost fish have declined in availability. Given that sooty terns rely heavily on associations with sub‐surface predators such as tuna to catch fish prey, the rapid expansion of industrialized fisheries for these species over the same period seems a plausible mechanism. Our results suggest that changes to marine ecosystems over the past 60 years have had a dramatic impact on the ecology of the most abundant seabird of tropical oceans, and highlight the potentially pervasive consequences of large predatory fish depletion on marine ecosystem function.  相似文献

Photosynthetic activity in carbonate‐rich benthic microbial mats located in saline, alkaline lakes on the Cariboo Plateau, B.C. resulted in pCO2 below equilibrium and δ13CDIC values up to +6.0‰ above predicted carbon dioxide (CO2) equilibrium values, representing a biosignature of photosynthesis. Mat‐associated δ13Ccarb values ranged from ~4 to 8‰ within any individual lake, with observations of both enrichments (up to 3.8‰) and depletions (up to 11.6‰) relative to the concurrent dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Seasonal and annual variations in δ13C values reflected the balance between photosynthetic 13C‐enrichment and heterotrophic inputs of 13C‐depleted DIC. Mat microelectrode profiles identified oxic zones where δ13Ccarb was within 0.2‰ of surface DIC overlying anoxic zones associated with sulphate reduction where δ13Ccarb was depleted by up to 5‰ relative to surface DIC reflecting inputs of 13C‐depleted DIC. δ13C values of sulphate reducing bacteria biomarker phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) were depleted relative to the bulk organic matter by ~4‰, consistent with heterotrophic synthesis, while the majority of PLFA had larger offsets consistent with autotrophy. Mean δ13Corg values ranged from ?18.7 ± 0.1 to ?25.3 ± 1.0‰ with mean Δ13Cinorg‐org values ranging from 21.1 to 24.2‰, consistent with non‐CO2‐limited photosynthesis, suggesting that Precambrian δ13Corg values of ~?26‰ do not necessitate higher atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Rather, it is likely that the high DIC and carbonate content of these systems provide a non‐limiting carbon source allowing for expression of large photosynthetic offsets, in contrast to the smaller offsets observed in saline, organic‐rich and hot spring microbial mats.  相似文献

Carbon and hydrogen stable isotope effects associated with methane formation by the corrosive archaeon Methanobacterium strain IM1 were determined during growth with hydrogen and iron. Isotope analyses were complemented by structural, elemental and molecular composition analyses of corrosion crusts. During growth with H2, strain IM1 formed methane with average δ13C of −43.5‰ and δ2H of −370‰. Corrosive growth led to methane more depleted in 13C, with average δ13C ranging from −56‰ to −64‰ during the early and the late growth phase respectively. The corresponding δ2H were less impacted by the growth phase, with average values ranging from −316 to −329‰. The stable isotope fractionation factors, , were 1.026 and 1.042 for hydrogenotrophic and corrosive growth respectively. Corrosion crusts formed by strain IM1 have a domed structure, appeared electrically conductive and were composed of siderite, calcite and iron sulfide, the latter formed by precipitation of sulfide (from culture medium) with ferrous iron generated during corrosion. Strain IM1 cells were found attached to crust surfaces and encrusted deep inside crust domes. Our results may assist to diagnose methanogens-induced corrosion in the field and suggest that intrusion of sulfide in anoxic settings may stimulate corrosion by methanogenic archaea via formation of semiconductive crusts.  相似文献

In modern microbial mats, hydrogen sulfide shows pronounced sulfur isotope (δ34S) variability over small spatial scales (~50‰ over <4 mm), providing information about microbial sulfur cycling within different ecological niches in the mat. In the geological record, the location of pyrite formation, overprinting from mat accretion, and post‐depositional alteration also affect both fine‐scale δ34S patterns and bulk δ34Spyrite values. We report μm‐scale δ34S patterns in Proterozoic samples with well‐preserved microbial mat textures. We show a well‐defined relationship between δ34S values and sulfide mineral grain size and type. Small pyrite grains (<25 μm) span a large range, tending toward high δ34S values (?54.5‰ to 11.7‰, mean: ?14.4‰). Larger pyrite grains (>25 μm) have low but equally variable δ34S values (?61.0‰ to ?10.5‰, mean: ?44.4‰). In one sample, larger sphalerite grains (>35 μm) have intermediate and essentially invariant δ34S values (?22.6‰ to ?15.6‰, mean: ?19.4‰). We suggest that different sulfide mineral populations reflect separate stages of formation. In the first stage, small pyrite grains form near the mat surface along a redox boundary where high rates of sulfate reduction, partial closed‐system sulfate consumption in microenvironments, and/or sulfide oxidation lead to high δ34S values. In another stage, large sphalerite grains with low δ34S values grow along the edges of pore spaces formed from desiccation of the mat. Large pyrite grains form deeper in the mat at slower sulfate reduction rates, leading to low δ34Ssulfide values. We do not see evidence for significant 34S‐enrichment in bulk pore water sulfide at depth in the mat due to closed‐system Rayleigh fractionation effects. On a local scale, Rayleigh fractionation influences the range of δ34S values measured for individual pyrite grains. Fine‐scale analyses of δ34Spyrite patterns can thus be used to extract environmental information from ancient microbial mats and aid in the interpretation of bulk δ34Spyrite records.  相似文献

The ability to use δ18O values of nitrous oxide (N2O) to apportion environmental emissions is currently hindered by a poor understanding of the controls on δ18O–N2O from nitrification (hydroxylamine oxidation to N2O and nitrite reduction to N2O). In this study fertilized agricultural soils and unfertilized temperate forest soils were aerobically incubated with different 18O/16O waters, and conceptual and mathematical models were developed to systematically explain the δ18O–N2O formed by nitrification. Modeling exercises used a set of defined input parameters to emulate the measured soil δ18O–N2O data (Monte Carlo approach). The Monte Carlo simulations implied that abiotic oxygen (O) exchange between nitrite (NO2?) and H2O is important in all soils, but that biological, enzyme‐controlled O‐exchange does not occur during the reduction of NO2? to N2O (nitrifier‐denitrification). Similarly, the results of the model simulations indicated that N2O consumption is not characteristic of aerobic N2O formation. The results of this study and a synthesis of the published literature data indicate that δ18O–N2O formed in aerobic environments is constrained between +13‰ and +35‰ relative to Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water (VSMOW). N2O formed via hydroxylamine oxidation and nitrifier‐denitrification cannot be separated using δ18O unless 18O tracers are employed. The natural range of nitrifier δ18O–N2O is discussed and explained in terms of our conceptual model, and the major and minor controls that define aerobically produced δ18O–N2O are identified. Despite the highly complex nature of δ18O–N2O produced by nitrification this δ18O range is narrow. As a result, in many situations δ18O values may be used in conjunction with δ15N–N2O data to apportion nitrifier‐ and denitrifier‐derived N2O. However, when biological O‐exchange during denitrification is high and N2O consumption is low, there may be too much overlap in δ18O values to distinguish N2O formed by these pathways.  相似文献

Capsule Stable isotope analysis of Swallow feathers, grown in Africa, revealed significant differences between populations breeding in Switzerland and England.

Aims To investigate the extent to which Swallow populations breeding in Switzerland and England are separated on their African wintering grounds.

Methods Swallows were caught at breeding colonies, biometric measurements were taken and feathers, grown in Africa, were collected. Feathers were combusted in a Carlo Erba C/N/S analyser and the δ13C and δ15N signatures were measured using a mass spectrometer.

Results The δ13C signatures of Swiss birds were significantly more depleted than those of birds from England. The δ15N signatures did not differ between the two populations.

Conclusion Birds from Switzerland and England probably winter in geographically distinct parts of Africa. The Swiss birds probably feed on prey that are more reliant on C3 vegetation, from woodlands, than the prey of English birds, which are more reliant on C4 vegetation, from grasslands.  相似文献

In the course of pilot trials of biotechnologies for the enhancement of oil recovery in formation waters of the Gangxi bed of the Dagang oil field (China), microbiological processes were investigated. The biotechnologies are based on injection into the petroleum reservoir of different oxygen sources (H2O2 solution or a water-air mixture) with nitrogen and phosphorus salts. The injection of water-air mixture with nitrogen and phosphorus salts resulted in an increase in the number of aerobic and anaerobic organotrophic bacteria, rates of sulfate reduction and methanogenesis in formation water and also the content of CO2 (from 4.8–12 to 15–23.2%) and methane (from 86–88 to 91.8%) in the gas. The preferential consumption of isotopically light bicarbonate by methanogens resulted in a higher content of the light 12C in methane; the δ13C/CH4 value changed from ?45.1…?48.3 to ?50.7…?59.3‰. At the same time, mineral carbonates of the formation water became isotopically heavier; the δ13C/Σcarbonates value increased from 3.4…4.0 to 5.4…9.6‰. Growth of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria was accompanied by production of biosurfactants and decreased interfacial tension of formation water. Injection of H2O2 solution resulted in the activation of aerobic processes and in suppression of both sulfate reduction and methanogenesis. Methane content in the gas decreased from 86–88 to 75.7–79.8%, probably due to its consumption by methanotrophs. Due to consumption of isotopically light methane, the residual methane carbon became heavier, with the δ13C/CH4 values from ?39.0 to ?44.3‰. At the same time, mineral carbonates of the formation water became isotopically considerably lighter; the δ13C/Σcarbonates value decreased from 5.4…9.6 to ?1.4…2.7‰. The additional amount of oil recovered during the trial of both variants of biotechnological treatment was 3819 t.  相似文献

Non-climatic variations in the oxygen isotopic compositions of plants   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The 18O content of leaf water strongly influences the 18O contents of atmospheric CO2 and O2. The 18O signatures of these atmospheric gases, in turn, emerge as important indicators of large-scale gas exchange processes. Better understanding of the factors that influence the isotopic composition of leaf water is still required, however, for the quantitative utilization of these tracers. The 18O enrichment of leaf water relative to local meteoric water, is known to reflect climatic conditions. Less is known about the extent variations in the 18O content of leaf water are influenced by nonclimatic, species-specific characteristics. In a collection of 90 plant species from all continents grown under the same climatic conditions in the Jerusalem Botanical Garden we observed variations of about 9‰ in the δ18O values of stem water, δs, and of about 14‰ in the mid-day δ18O enrichment of bulk leaf water, δLW–δs. Differences between δ18O values predicted by a conventional evaporation model, δM, and δLW ranged between – 3.3‰ and + 11.8‰. The δ18O values of water in the chloroplasts (δch) in leaves of 10 selected plants were estimated from on-line CO2 discrimination measurements. Although much uncertainty is still involved in these estimates, the results indicated that δch can significantly deviate from δM in species with high leaf peclet number. The δ18O values of bulk leaf water significantly correlated with δ18O values of leaf cellulose (directly) and with instantaneous water use efficiency (A/E, inversely). Differences in isotopic characteristics among conventionally defined vegetation types were not significant, except for conifers that significantly differed from shrubs in δ18O and δ13C values of cellulose and in their peclet numbers, and from deciduous woodland species in their δ18O and δ13C values of cellulose. The results indicated that predictions of the δ18O values of leaf water (δLW, δM and δch) could be improved by considering plant species-specific characteristics.  相似文献

In the deep biosphere, microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) is exploited for energy. Here, we show that, in fractured continental crystalline bedrock in three areas in Sweden, this process produced sulfide that reacted with iron to form pyrite extremely enriched in 34S relative to 32S. As documented by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) microanalyses, the δ34Spyrite values are up to +132‰V‐CDT and with a total range of 186‰. The lightest δ34Spyrite values (?54‰) suggest very large fractionation during MSR from an initial sulfate with δ34S values (δ34Ssulfate,0) of +14 to +28‰. Fractionation of this magnitude requires a slow MSR rate, a feature we attribute to nutrient and electron donor shortage as well as initial sulfate abundance. The superheavy δ34Spyrite values were produced by Rayleigh fractionation effects in a diminishing sulfate pool. Large volumes of pyrite with superheavy values (+120 ± 15‰) within single fracture intercepts in the boreholes, associated heavy average values up to +75‰ and heavy minimum δ34Spyrite values, suggest isolation of significant amounts of isotopically light sulfide in other parts of the fracture system. Large fracture‐specific δ34Spyrite variability and overall average δ34Spyrite values (+11 to +16‰) lower than the anticipated δ34Ssulfate,0 support this hypothesis. The superheavy pyrite found locally in the borehole intercepts thus represents a late stage in a much larger fracture system undergoing Rayleigh fractionation. Microscale Rb–Sr dating and U/Th–He dating of cogenetic minerals reveal that most pyrite formed in the early Paleozoic era, but crystal overgrowths may be significantly younger. The δ13C values in cogenetic calcite suggest that the superheavy δ34Spyrite values are related to organotrophic MSR, in contrast to findings from marine sediments where superheavy pyrite has been proposed to be linked to anaerobic oxidation of methane. The findings provide new insights into MSR‐related S‐isotope systematics, particularly regarding formation of large fractions of 34S‐rich pyrite.  相似文献

Isotope analyses of nitrate and algae were used to gain better understanding of sources of nitrate to Florida’s karst springs and processes affecting nitrate in the Floridan aquifer at multiple scales. In wet years, δ15N and δ18O of nitrate ranged from +3 to +9‰ in headwater springs in north Florida, indicating nitrification of soil ammonium as the dominant source. With below normal rainfall, the δ15N and δ18O of nitrate were higher in almost all springs (reaching +20.2 and +15.3‰, respectively) and were negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen. In springs with values of δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 greater than +10‰, nitrate concentrations declined 40–50% in dry years and variations in the δ15N and δ18O of nitrate were consistent with the effects of denitrification. Modeling of the aquifer as a closed system yielded in situ fractionation caused by denitrification of 9 and 18‰ for Δ18O and Δ15N, respectively. We observed no strong evidence for local sources of nitrate along spring runs; concentrations declined downstream (0.42–3.3?μmol-NO3 L?1 per km) and the isotopic dynamics of algae and nitrate indicated a closed system. Correlation between the δ15N composition of nitrate and algae was observed at regional and spring-run scales, but the relationship was complicated by varying isotopic fractionation factors associated with nitrate uptake (Δ ranged from 2 to 13‰). Our study demonstrates that nitrate inputs to Florida’s springs are derived predominantly from non-point sources and that denitrification is detectable in aquifer waters with relatively long residence time (i.e., matrix flow).  相似文献

The stable isotope values for a range of size classes of Hyporhamphus regularis ardelio from Moreton Bay, south‐east Australia were determined. There was a positive linear relationship between δ13C and standard length (LS)(δ13C = 0·034 LS ? 16·23; r2 = 0·78). δ13C ranged from ?8·48 to ?17·29‰ with the smallest size class (50 mm LS) being on average 1·04‰ enriched with respect to that of zooplankton (Temora turbinata) and 7·97‰ depleted compared to Zostera capricorni. δ13C was positively correlated with LS(P < 0·01)(more enriched with increasing LS) with those fish of the largest size class (225 mm LS) being 9·86 and 0·84‰ enriched than T. turbinata and Z. capricorni, respectively. There was no detectable trend in δ15N values with LS(P > 0·01) with δ15N, ranging from 9·18 to 11·00‰. Fish of all size classes were on average 2·32 and 7·63‰ more enriched than zooplankton and seagrass, respectively. Carbon isotope data indicate that H. r. ardelio commence life as carnivores and change to a diet in which seagrass is the primary carbon source. The dependence on animal matter, however, is always present. Due to the low percentage of nitrogen in Z. capricorni(2·5%) compared to zooplankton (9·1%) it appears that nitrogen from zooplankton is necessary throughout their life history with the carbon requirements for these fish coming chiefly from Z. capricorni.  相似文献

RubisCO, the CO2 fixing enzyme of the Calvin–Benson–Bassham (CBB) cycle, is responsible for the majority of carbon fixation on Earth. RubisCO fixes 12CO2 faster than 13CO2 resulting in 13C-depleted biomass, enabling the use of δ13C values to trace CBB activity in contemporary and ancient environments. Enzymatic fractionation is expressed as an ε value, and is routinely used in modelling, for example, the global carbon cycle and climate change, and for interpreting trophic interactions. Although values for spinach RubisCO (ε = ~29‰) have routinely been used in such efforts, there are five different forms of RubisCO utilized by diverse photolithoautotrophs and chemolithoautotrophs and ε values, now known for four forms (IA, B, D and II), vary substantially with ε = 11‰ to 27‰. Given the importance of ε values in δ13C evaluation, we measured enzymatic fractionation of the fifth form, form IC RubisCO, which is found widely in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Values were determined for two model organisms, the ‘Proteobacteria’ Ralstonia eutropha (ε = 19.0‰) and Rhodobacter sphaeroides (ε = 22.4‰). It is apparent from these measurements that all RubisCO forms measured to date discriminate less than commonly assumed based on spinach, and that enzyme ε values must be considered when interpreting and modelling variability of δ13C values in nature.  相似文献
