Predators affect prey and their resources by changing the density and traits (e.g. morphology and behavior) of those prey. Ecological studies and models of community dynamics, however, typically only incorporate how changes in prey densities, rather than their traits, affect community dynamics. In a recent meta-analysis, Preisser et al. show that trait effects are as large, if not larger than density effects. This strongly suggests that trait effects should be integrated into empirical and theoretical studies.  相似文献

This paper asks what it means to say that a disorder is a "real" disorder and then considers whether culture-bound syndromes are real disorders. Following J.L. Austin I note that when we ask whether some supposed culture-bound syndrome is a real disorder we should start by specifying what possible alternatives we have in mind. We might be asking whether the reported behaviours genuinely occur, that is, whether the culture-bound syndrome is a genuine phenomenon as opposed to a myth. We might be wondering whether the condition should rightly be considered a disorder, as opposed to some sort of non-disorder condition (for example, a non-disorder form of deviance, or a potentially valuable condition). We might want to know whether the culture-bound syndrome is really a distinct disorder, in the sense that scientific classification systems should include it as a separate category, or whether it is just a variant of a universally occurring disorder. I argue that some specific difficulties can arise with determining whether a culture-bound syndrome is a real disorder in each of these three senses. However, the frequent assumption that real disorders will necessarily occur universally, and that those that occur only in certain environments are suspicious is not generally justified.  相似文献

Models have been a tool of science at least since the 18th century and serve a variety of purposes from focusing abstract thoughts to representing scaled down version of things for study. Generally, animal models are needed when it is impractical or unethical to study the target animal. Biologists have taken modeling by analogy beyond most other disciplines, deriving the relationship between model and target through evolution. The "unity in diversity" concept suggests that homology between model and target foretells functional similarities. Animal model studies have been invaluable for elucidating general strategies, pathways, processes and guiding the development of hypotheses to test in target animals. The vast majority of animals used as models are used in biomedical preclinical trials. The predictive value of those animal studies is carefully monitored, thus providing an ideal dataset for evaluating the efficacy of animal models. On average, the extrapolated results from studies using tens of millions of animals fail to accurately predict human responses. Inadequacies in experimental designs may account for some of the failure. However, recent discoveries of unexpected variation in genome organization and regulation may reveal a heretofore unknown lack of homology between model animals and target animals that could account for a significant proportion of the weakness in predictive ability. A better understanding of the mechanisms of gene regulation may provide needed insight to improve the predictability of animal models.  相似文献

Summary Bumblebees must forage to provide food to the colony. However, foraging is costly as worker longevity is inversely related to foraging effort. Given this trade-off, workers from colonies with abundant food supplies could either maintain foraging to increase reserves for future use or forage less to avoid the associated costs. We tested these hypotheses over one summer, using 13 pairs of field colonies of Bombus impatiens. Half of the colonies were provided with a sucrose solution ad libitum and pollen at regular intervals throughout their entire development, while the other half served as controls. We measured the forager activity rates in colonies with infra-red motion detectors fit in nest box entrances. However, due to reasons beyond our control (loss of the queen, usurpation by Psithyrus, debris in the entrance tunnel, etc.), we could use data from only two pairs of colonies for the analysis. Food supplemented colonies had a forager activity rate per worker 25% lower than controls which supports the hypothesis that workers reduce risks when given the opportunity.Received 15 May 2003; revised 15 January 2004; accepted 19 February 2004.  相似文献

The diversity of ways in which parasites reduce the fitness of their hosts has been documented during the past decades, and clearly indicates that parasites can often be considered as direct agents of selection. In natural systems, however, the outcome of a host-parasite interaction might be strongly determined by other ecological factors. Parasites can be detrimental to host fitness in one environment, whereas they can be beneficial to it in another. From an evolutionary perspective, this phenomenon is of considerable importance for understanding the dynamics of coevolution among geographically structured populations evolving under different ecological pressures. Here, Frédéric Thomas and colleagues review several ecological situations in which parasitized individuals enjoy a selective advantage over unparasitized conspecifics.  相似文献

Considerable progress has been made in our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of the placebo effect, and most of our knowledge originates from the field of pain and analgesia. Today, the placebo effect represents a promising model that could allow us to shed new light on mind-body interactions. The mental events induced by placebo administration can activate mechanisms that are similar to those activated by drugs, which indicates a similarity between psychosocial and pharmacodynamic effects. These new neurobiological advances are already changing our conception of how clinical trials and medical practice must be viewed and conducted.  相似文献

The rate of CO(2) uptake by the mesophyll is examined as a function of the size of the substomatal chamber. Using the techniques of classical electric circuit analysis and a model in which the uptake is linear in the ambient CO(2) concentration, it is shown that the optimal chamber radius is several times larger than is the pore radius. This is somewhat larger than necessary for the reduction of transpirational water loss, and it offers an explanation for the otherwise inexplicably large size of the chamber.  相似文献

Antisense oligonucleotides provide a simple and efficient approach for developing target-selective drugs because they can modulate gene expression sequence-specifically. Antisense oligonucleotides have also become efficient molecular biological tools to investigate the function of any protein in the cell. As the application of antisense oligonucleotides has expanded, multiple mechanisms of oligonucleotides have been characterized that impede their routine use.
