The behaviors of breeding Steller sea lions in response to encounters with killer whales near the shore were observed on Brat Chirpoev Island, Kuril Islands between May and July 2002–2007. Approaches by killer whales and sea lion behavior was observed visually and recorded. Killer whales approached the rookery 104 times during the entire period of observations (289 days). In most cases (n = 95), beached sea lions did not show any apparent reactions to the presence of killer whales, and there were no observed interactions. Sea lions showed agitation during nine of the approaches; five of these events were considered to be predation attempts. The killer whales attacked the sea lions three times, however all the attacks were unsuccessful. We recorded two different types of responses towards the killer whales: (1) beaching on the shore (three times) and (2) mass exodus from the rookery with subsequent formation of a tight, actively swimming and vocalizing group (six times). The latter is the first recorded observation of this behavior for Steller sea lions. The observation suggests a low degree of interactions between these two species near the studied rookery. Despite the numerous observations of killer whales near the rookery, there were no observations of direct predation on sea lions. It is likely the killer whale predation has little or no direct impact on the Steller sea lion population on Brat Chirpoev Islands during the breeding period.  相似文献

Alloparental care is rarely observed in Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) where maternal care is extended to a single pup for up to 1 year or more. However, we observed 28 allonursing events and one case of adoption at a small breeding rookery in the western Gulf of Alaska between the years 2001 and 2005. Multiparous and primiparous females were observed nursing nonfilial individuals with equal frequency, but primiparous females spent significantly more time nursing nonfilial individuals. Multiparous females allowed allonursing only while sleeping and unaware while most primiparous females were aware that they were allonursing. These results are consistent with the misdirected-care hypothesis suggesting that primiparous (presumably younger) females nurse nonfilial pups due to inexperience, whereas multiparous (presumably older) females are victims of milk stealing during times of inattentiveness. Nonfilial pups were aggressively tossed most often during the pupping season and only by multiparous females, while allonursing events occurred more frequently after the pupping season. Starveling pups were not cared for by any female, but two were attended by a single bull during separate autumn seasons.  相似文献

Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) are listed as an endangered species in western Alaska and have exhibited a significant population decline throughout their range. Eight microsatellite loci were isolated from genomic DNA libraries. In addition, all these markers were found to be variable in nine individuals of the California sea lion (Zalophus californicus). This panel of markers was developed to analyse population structure in Steller sea lions throughout their range.  相似文献

Substantial effort has been made to increase the accuracy of photogrammetric measurement techniques, especially on marine mammals. However, accuracy of the physical measurements is rarely considered when calculating the photogrammetric accuracy. We examined inter- and intra-researcher variation in the measurement of physical morphometrics of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) to assess their potential effects on photogrammetric accuracy and body mass predictions based on photogrammetrically derived morphometrics. Significant differences were found inter-researcher in median standard length and axillary girth and intra-researcher when measuring axillary girth of the same animals. Photogrammetrically derived estimates of these parameters are comparable to physical measurements when taking into account the inherent inter- and intra-researcher variation.  相似文献

The ability to use heart rate (fh) to predict oxygen consumption rates ( [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} ) in Steller sea lions and other pinnipeds has been investigated in fasting animals. However, it is unknown whether established fh: [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} relationships hold under more complex physiological situations, such as when animals are feeding or digesting. We assessed whether fh could accurately predict [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} in trained Steller sea lions while fasting and after being fed. Using linear mixed-effects models, we derived unique equations to describe the fh: [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} relationship for fasted sea lions resting on land and in water. Feeding did not significantly change the fh: [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} relationship on land. However, Steller sea lions in water displayed a different fh: [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} relationship after consuming a 4-kg meal compared with the fasting condition. Incorporating comparable published fh: [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} data from Steller sea lions showed a distinct effect of feeding after a 6-kg meal. Ultimately, our study illustrated that both feeding and physical environment are statistically relevant when deriving [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} from telemetered fh, but that only environment affects the practical ability to predict metabolism from fh. Updating current bioenergetic models with data gathered using these predictive fh: [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}_{{{\text{O}}_{2} }} equations will yield more accurate estimates of metabolic rates of free-ranging Steller sea lions under a variety of physiological, behavioral, and environmental states.  相似文献

Two key factors influence the diving and hence foraging ability of marine mammals: increased oxygen stores prolong aerobic metabolism and decreased metabolism slows rate of fuel consumption. In young animals, foraging ability may be physiologically limited due to low total body oxygen stores and high mass specific metabolic rates. To examine the development of dive physiology in Steller sea lions, total body oxygen stores were measured in animals from 1 to 29 months of age and used to estimate aerobic dive limit (ADL). Blood oxygen stores were determined by measuring hematocrit, hemoglobin, and plasma volume, while muscle oxygen stores were determined by measuring myoglobin concentration and total muscle mass. Around 2 years of age, juveniles attained mass specific total body oxygen stores that were similar to those of adult females; however, their estimated ADL remained less than that of adults, most likely due to their smaller size and higher mass specific metabolic rates. These findings indicate that juvenile Steller sea lion oxygen stores remain immature for more than a year, and therefore may constrain dive behavior during the transition to nutritional independence.  相似文献

Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) were fed restricted iso-caloric amounts of Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) or walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) for 8–9 days, four times over the course of a year to investigate effects of season and prey composition on sea lion physiology. At these levels, the sea lions lost body mass at a significantly higher rate during winter (1.6 ± 0.14 kg day−1), and at a lower rate during summer (1.2 ± 0.32 kg day−1). Decreases in body fat mass and standard metabolic rates during the trials were similar throughout the seasons and for both diet types. The majority of the body mass that was lost when eating pollock derived from decreases in lipid mass, while a greater proportion of the mass lost when eating herring derived from decreases in lean tissue, except in the summer when the pattern was reversed. Metabolic depression was not observed during all trials despite the constant loss of body mass. Our study supports the hypothesis that restricted energy intake may be more critical to Steller sea lions in the winter months, and that the type of prey consumed (e.g., herring or pollock) may have seasonally specific effects on body mass and composition.  相似文献

We examined the effects of research disturbance on the behavior and abundance of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) at rookeries on Marmot and Ugamak Islands in Alaska. During 3 of 6 yr, researchers intentionally drove all adult and juvenile sea lions off at least part of the beach in order to permanently mark and measure sea lion pups. The research disturbance occurred after the majority of females had bred and when most pups were 1 mo old. We used generalized linear models to determine the relationship between research disturbance and sea lion behavior or abundance. Research disturbance was related to changes in the proportion of sea lions exhibiting two to three of nine behavior metrics: agonistic and resting females and active males at Marmot, and active and resting males and females at Ugamak. Model results indicated that changes lasted between 3 and 20 d depending on the sex, behavior, and rookery. Inclusion of research disturbance into Marmot abundance models did not improve the fit to the data, if variability between years was permitted. Optimally timed, low‐frequency research disturbance did not appear to have long‐term effects on sea lion behavior or abundance and was largely associated with changes that were similar to natural variation.  相似文献

Parasites can have both direct and indirect impacts on organisms through changes in health, growth, reproductive success, behaviour and survival. This research investigates the effects of hookworms (Uncinaria sp.) on the growth and mortality of New Zealand sea lion (NZ sea lion, Phocarctos hookeri) pups between birth and 3 months of age. NZ sea lion pups that received ivermectin treatment to reduce their hookworm burden had higher growth rates. Hookworm infection had no significant effect on mortality rate except when overall mortality was high during epidemics caused by other pathogens. Understanding the impacts of parasites on wild populations of pinnipeds is important for the management of the species, particularly when the species is threatened, as is the case for the NZ sea lion. There are at least two reasons for this: first, to quantify the impact of the parasite on parameters of population dynamics such as offspring survival and, as a consequence, female reproductive output; and second, to gain sufficient knowledge of the host/parasite dynamics to allow the balance to be manipulated in favour of the host should this be required for conservation management.  相似文献

Phytochelatins (PCs) are post-translationally synthesized thiol reactive peptides that play important roles in detoxification of heavy metal and metalloids in plants and other living organisms. The overall goal of this study is to develop transgenic plants with increased tolerance for and accumulation of heavy metals and metalloids from soil by expressing an Arabidopsis thaliana AtPCS1 gene, encoding phytochelatin synthase (PCS), in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.). A FLAG-tagged AtPCS1 gDNA, under its native promoter, is expressed in Indian mustard, and transgenic pcs lines have been compared with wild-type plants for tolerance to and accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As). Compared to wild type plants, transgenic plants exhibit significantly higher tolerance to Cd and As. Shoots of Cd-treated pcs plants have significantly higher concentrations of PCs and thiols than those of wild-type plants. Shoots of wild-type plants accumulated significantly more Cd than those of transgenic plants, while accumulation of As in transgenic plants was similar to that in wild type plants. Although phytochelatin synthase improves the ability of Indian mustard to tolerate higher levels of the heavy metal Cd and the metalloid As, it does not increase the accumulation potential of these metals in the above ground tissues of Indian mustard plants.  相似文献

Organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been detected in a variety of marine mammal species at levels associated with adverse health effects. Little is known about OC levels and impacts on health in pinnipeds with different life histories. We determined the health and levels of 18 OC pesticides and 16 PCB congeners in blubber samples from 20 Steller sea lions and 39 Pacific harbor seals stranded from Oregon and Southern Washington. The most commonly detected OC at the highest concentration was p,p′- dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE). PCBs were detected in all samples as well. Hypothesis testing indicated that diseased Steller sea lions (males and females combined) had higher contaminant concentrations than healthy Steller sea lions, and diseased Pacific harbor seals had higher concentrations of total OCs than healthy animals. Differences were also noted between diseased and healthy animals when looking at individual sexes of each species. Diseased Steller sea lions had higher mean contaminant levels than diseased harbor seals and healthy Steller sea lions had higher mean contaminant concentrations than healthy Pacific harbor seals. These results show that species differences exist in both contaminant loads and sensitivity to contaminants, which may be due to differences in life histories and physiology.  相似文献

The P transposable element invaded the Drosophila melanogaster genome in the middle of the twentieth century, probably from D. willistoni in the Caribbean or southeastern North America. P elements then spread rapidly and became ubiquitous worldwide in wild populations of D. melanogaster by 1980. To study the dynamics and long-term fate of transposable genetic elements, we examined the molecular profile of genomic P elements and the phenotype in the P-M system of the current North American natural populations collected in 2001-2003. We found that full-size P and KP elements were the two major size classes of P elements present in the genomes of all populations ("FP + KP predominance") and that the P-related phenotypes had largely not changed since the 1980s. Both FP + KP predominance and phenotypic stability were also seen in other populations from other continents. As North American populations did not show many KP elements in earlier samples, we hypothesize that KP elements have spread and multiplied in the last 20 years in North America. We suggest that this may be due to a transpositional advantage of KP elements, rather than to a role in P-element regulation.  相似文献

In 2010, the largest part of the Steller sea lion breeding community on Tyuleniy Island was located on the harem rookery of northern fur seals, which occupied the eastern beach, as well as on the western side of the island, which was free of fur seals. At the culmination of harem activity on June 29, 26.5% of the animals at the age of 1+ concentrated on the eastern beach and 41.1%, on the western beach in the daytime. However, 52.3% of the pups were born on the eastern beach and only 30.4% were born on the western beach. Pups were also present on the capes: 9.1% of the pups were observed on the northern cape and 8.2% on the southern cape, while the main population on these sites consisted of non-harem bulls, bachelors, and young animals. At the peak of harem activity, the number of females per one harem bull was 13.1 at sites 1 to 3 of the eastern beach and each of them, on average, had 1.05 pups; on sites 7–12 there were, respectively, 9.1 females and 1.42 pups per female, and on the western beach, 21.7 females and 0.64 pups. The resulting abundance of sea lions on Tyuleniy Island in 2010 exceeded 1500, which was almost ten times as many as their number in 1989. A total of about 100 bulls, 60 harem bulls, 1000 females, and 700 pups were recorded there. Half-bulls and young animals amounted to one-third of the entire population. Meanwhile the overall sex ratio at the culmination of harem activity was 11.5 females per one bull and 18.8 per one harem bull. About 75% of the females belonged to the parous group. The mortality rate among newborns reached 5.4%. No mortality was observed in adults. As many as 133 previously branded Steller sea lions were found and 109 of them (81.9%) were immigrants. Among immigrants, 29% were branded individuals of reproductive groups from the Kuril Islands, 54% were from the Iony Islands, 16% were from the Yamsky Islands, and about 1% were from Kamchatka. Four-year-old individuals predominated among the branded immigrants (23.8%). The oldest Steller sea lion (21 years of age) was one that was branded on the Srednego Islands in 1989. The rate of marked animal return from 175 pups that were branded on Tyuleniy Island the year before was 13.8%.  相似文献

Herbaceous Echinochloa crusgalli var. frumentacea is highly resistant to a wide range of heavy metal concentrations. However, its detoxification mechanism has not been reported yet. We exposed plants to 100 μM CdCl2 for 7 days then examined cadmium accumulation and its subcellular distribution in binding to ligands. Cd concentration increased over the exposure period to a saturation point at day 5 when its level reached 1,732.41 μg g−1 dry weight, an amount about 820 times greater than that found in the control. In the roots, most Cd was distributed in the insoluble fraction, perhaps because of an absorption mechanism at the root surface. Our profile for distribution revealed two Cd-binding ligand peaks: a high molecular weight of 60 kDa and a 2.5-kDa Cd-binding ligand. The latter increased with time and had a typical phytochelatin (PC) amino acid composition of predominantly cysteine, glutamate, and glycine (16.5%, 16.6%, and 11.9%, respectively). The ratio of glutamate/cysteine/glycine was 1.4:1.4:1.0, which is similar to that for other typical PCs.  相似文献

The level of fluctuating asymmetry (FA), which is defined as random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry in the morphological traits of an organism, increases with increasing developmental instability, and it may be used as an indicator of environmental and/or genetic stresses. This study attempted to relate FA levels in the opercular plates of the barnacle Amphibalanus (Balanus) amphitrite with shore height and body trace metal concentrations. Barnacles were collected from both low and mid shores at six coastal locations with various degrees of marine pollution in Hong Kong. Four opercular traits, namely scutum length, tergum length, scutum width, tergum width were measured in the specimen while concentrations of five common trace metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Mn and Zn) were determined in their body tissues using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrophotometry. Among the four traits, only tergum length and scutum width fulfilled the assumption of FA while their measurement errors were low. Across all sites, mid-shore A. amphitrite consistently exhibited a significantly higher FA level in scutum width than that in low-shore barnacles, but FA levels in tergum length were similar between the two shore heights. These results suggested that FA was trait-dependent, and mid-shore barnacles were possibly under high physical stress, such as desiccation and high temperature, leading to high developmental instability. Although no positive association was observed between FA and metal contamination in low-shore A. amphitrite, FA level in tergum length significantly increased with decreasing body concentration of manganese (Mn) in these barnacles. Such a negative relationship may be explained by the mechanism of bioaccumulation and physiological role of Mn in A. amphitrite with respect to the formation of barnacle shell plates. Mobilization of two P element subfamilies (canonical and O-type) from Drosophila sturtevanti and D. saltans was evaluated for copy number and transposition activity using the transposon display (TD) technique. Pairwise distances between strains regarding the insertion polymorphism profile were estimated. Amplification of the P element based on copy number estimates was highly variable among the strains (D. sturtevanti, canonical 20.11, O-type 9.00; D. saltans, canonical 16.4, O-type 12.60 insertions, on average). The larger values obtained by TD compared to our previous data by Southern blotting support the higher sensitivity of TD over Southern analysis for estimating transposable element copy numbers. The higher numbers of the canonical P element and the greater divergence in its distribution within the genome of D. sturtevanti (24.8%) compared to the O-type (16.7%), as well as the greater divergence in the distribution of the canonical P element, between the D. sturtevanti (24.8%) and the D. saltans (18.3%) strains, suggest that the canonical element occupies more sites within the D. sturtevanti genome, most probably due to recent transposition activity. These data corroborate the hypothesis that the O-type is the oldest subfamily of P elements in the saltans group and suggest that the canonical P element is or has been transpositionally active until more recently in D. sturtevanti.  相似文献

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes.  相似文献

New combinations are proposed in anticipation of the Polygonaceae treatment in the forthcoming volume of Intermountain Flora: Polygonum kelloggii var. esotericum, P. kelloggii var. watsonii , Rumex densiflorus var. pycnanthus , R. salicifolius var. utahensis, and R. occidentalis var. tomentellus. Tooth wear in marine mammals has been attributed to age, feeding habits, behavior, and contaminants. Advanced tooth wear in some California sea lions, including some of very young age (<5 yr), in the Gulf of California, suggests that there are variations in chemical composition of tooth parts, wherein the concentrations of certain trace minerals might be anomalous, making them more susceptible to erosion. The concentrations of the essential minerals Ca, P, K, Na, Fe, Mg, and Zn in the dentition of Zalophus c. californianus are documented for the first time and are compared for sea lion teeth with different degrees of wear. Canine teeth and molars from 45 skulls collected at 15 localities since 1978 were digested in perchloric acid and analyzed using atomic adsorption spectrometry, the results being expressed in milligrams per 100 g. An index of tooth wear (Id) was established, involving the average wear on the teeth and the age of the organism. No significant difference was detected in the variables, but there was one between ages (p=0.02). A higher degree of wear was observed up to 7 yr of age than from this age onward. Mineral concentrations did not explain the excessive wear observed (correlation, p>0.09; ANOVA, p>0.15); however, the Ca concentration of the teeth was inversely proportional to the age of the animal (sexes combined, p=0.026) and particularly significant for the females (r 2=0.112, r=−0.335, p=0.039). Females could be more prone to decalcification because of their annual bone investment in their offspring. Animals of both sexes were susceptible to tooth wear as their age increased, but the higher frequency of animals between 4 and 7 yr suggests an impact on survival at early stages probably linked to deficient feeding and chronic malnutrition.  相似文献
