Large eggs (1·38 mm) of Atlantic cod reared in the laboratory produced large larvae. However, large larvae had low survival rates. Results also indicated that the first few days' of growth of cod larvae mainly resulted in an increase in mass. Exogenous feeding tended to result in faster growth than endogenous feeding. In the delayed feeding groups (larvae not fed until 67 degree-days), larvae from large eggs grew faster than those from small eggs (1·28 mm) after feeding commenced, while there was no significant difference in growth rate within feeding groups. Compensatory growth was detected in the delayed feeding groups.  相似文献

The effect of stress on reproduction in Atlantic cod   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study imposed stress upon spawning cod Gadus morhua in the laboratory to evaluate the potential effects of trawl avoidance on their reproductive physiology and spawning behaviour. Plasma cortisol levels of stressed fish were significantly higher than controls. Stressed cod initiated fewer courtships and often performed an altered courtship sequence. Both control and stressed fish spawned and there was little difference in the production of eggs, fertilization rate, hatching success or time to starvation of larvae. However, stressed fish produced abnormal larvae more frequently. Cod exposed to a chronic stressor are able to spawn successfully, but there appears to be a negative impact of this stress on their reproductive output, particularly through the production of abnormal larvae.  相似文献

Prey size spectra and prey availability of larval and small juvenile cod   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The aim of the present study is to describe the prey preference characteristics of cod larvae and assess preference variability in relation to species and size composition of copepod prey. A further aim is to examine the hypothesis that dietary prey size spectra remain the same during the larval stage when viewed on a relative predator/prey size scale. The study is based on stomach analysis of larval/juvenile cod in the size range 10–35 mm from nursery grounds in the North Sea. Stomach contents (species, size) were compared to environmental composition and preference indices were calculated. Prey size spectra had the expected relationship to larval cod size, and preference for given copepod species could be ascribed to their relative size. Additional species-specific preferences were evident, for example the larger Pseudocalanus and the larger Calanus spp. were highly preferred. Available prey biomass was highest in the areas of a hydrographic front, where larvae have been shown to concentrate. Changes in prey availability with larval growth depend strongly on specific prey biomass spectra at a given location. Both increasing and decreasing prey availability at increasing larval size were indicated, dependent on location. The findings illustrate the usefulness of coupling dietary prey size spectra and biomass spectra of available prey sizes during studies of ichthyoplankton feeding ecology.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Competitive interactions among larvae of Drosophila species using the same habitat will usually involve individuals varying in age and size. Older, larger larvae might be expected to outcompete younger, smaller larvae.
  • 2 Newly hatched laryae of Drosophila aldrichi and D.buzzatii were placed on induced cactus necroses (simulating the natural habitat), either simultaneously, or with a 1 or 2 day difference in the time at which individuals of the other species were added.
  • 3 Evidence for competitive differences with larval age were found. In both species, body weight was significantly higher for those larvae added first than for later addition larvae, and a longer time to complete development was required for those larvae added 2 days later. However, pre-adult viability of D.aldrichi was significantly higher for larvae started 1 or 2 days after larvae of D.buzzatii. For D.buzzatii, viability was lowest for larvae started simultaneously with D.aldrichi, but not different between those started either before or after D.aldrichi.
  • 4 Considering all three traits, no clear advantage for the early addition larvae was observed.

Egg size and larval development in Central Amazonian fish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The relationship between larval development and egg size was studied in 14 species of Central Amazonian fish (seven characiforms, five cichlids and two siluriforms). Egg size was measured as yolk dry weight at activation (egg minus chorion). Larval development was measured as larva] dry weight and age (h from activation) at the developmental stages. Egg size explained most of the variability of larval body weight and total larval weight at hatching, pectoral bud formation, eye pigmentation, jaw formation, swimbladder inflation, onset of swimming, first feeding and maximum weight attained with exclusively endogenous feeding. Larval ages at these developmental stages were poorly related to egg size. Other variables, such as the weight-specific yolk caloric content of the eggs (cal mg−1), spawning site (river or lake) and phyletic relationships had no effect on the remaining variance. These results suggest that the developmental stages considered were conservative among the species examined and that a sequence of stages occurs in the larval development of Amazonian larval fish. The resistance of the larvae to starvation was not related to egg size.  相似文献

Reproductive characteristics of a landlocked goby, Rhinogobius sp. (the orange form), in the Lake Biwa water system were compared between the fluvial-lacustrine and lacustrine populations to show the relationship of the egg size to the risk of larval starvation. The comparison of both oocytes in the ovaries and spawned eggs showed that egg size is larger in the fluvial-lacustrine population than in the lacustrine population. Although females of the two populations spawn eggs of the same number as a function of their body size, those of the fluvial-lacustrine population spawn larger eggs even in relation to their body size by investing more in reproduction than those of the lacustrine population. A positive correlation was experimentally shown between the egg size and larval starvation tolerance. Most larvae of the fluvial-lacustrine population (>2 days old) had exhausted their yolk during their larval drift downstream to the lake, indicating that larvae severely suffer from starvation. Egg-size variation between the two populations seemed to be the result of adaptation to the different life cycles, in which the fluvial-lacustrine population confronts the risk of larval starvation, whereas the lacustrine population seems safe from such risk of starvation.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. In libellulids, egg size differs between species and populations. There are also size differences within egg clutches of individual females.
2. Past experiments suggest that there are two different types of egg clutches in libellulids. Egg size decreases significantly during oviposition in species that perform non-contact guarding during oviposition. In contrast, in species ovipositing in tandem, egg size is randomly distributed.
3. This study deals with the possible consequences of egg size variation within the different egg clutch types. The study examined whether there is a correlation between egg development time, offspring sex or larval size and egg size.
4. The current experiments were conducted in Namibia and Germany. Five non-contact guarding and four tandem guarding libellulid species were used.
5. In some species larger eggs needed more time to develop, in some species no correlation between egg size and egg development time could be found, whereas in other species larger eggs developed faster.
6. The sex ratio was biased towards females in Leucorrhinia dubia and in Sympetrum striolatum and egg size was not associated with gender.
7. In both egg clutch types larger eggs resulted in larger larvae. In this study, evidence was found that the effects of egg size diminished with progressing larval development under good conditions. However, it is possible that the effects may have a greater influence under harsh circumstances.  相似文献

An experimental study was performed to disentangle parental and environmental effects on the growth of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua larvae and juveniles. Eggs were collected during the spawning season from spawning pairs (families) kept separately in specially designed spawning compartments. Newly hatched larvae were released simultaneously into two mesocosms of 2500 and 4400 m3. Larval growth was monitored by sampling over a 10 week period, after which juveniles were transferred to on-growing tanks, where they were tagged and kept for up to 2 years. Maternal origin was determined by individual microsatellite genotyping of the larvae ( n = 3949, 24 families) and juveniles ( n = 600). The results showed significant positive correlations between egg size and larval size during the whole mesocosm period. Correlations, however, weakened with time and were no longer significant at the first tank-rearing sampling at an age of 9 months. Significant family-specific differences in growth were observed. The coefficient of variation ( c.v. ) was calculated in order to examine variation in standard length of larvae during the mesocosm period. Inter-family c.v. was on average 69% of intra-family c.v. Differences in zooplankton densities between the two mesocosms were reflected in larval growth, condition factor and c.v. Low food abundance appeared to reduce c.v. and favour growth of larvae that showed relatively slow growth at high food abundance. It is suggested that genetically determined variation in growth potential is maintained by environmental variability.  相似文献

Rhodnius prolixus adults which had fed to repletion at each larval instar were frequently autogenous, while those allowed to take only partial blood meals at the 3rd, 4th and 5th larval instars were always anautogenous.Bugs fed to repletion at each larval instar had large abdominal fat bodies throughout adult life. In such bugs, the quantity of blood associated with the production of one egg was small and constant during the course of several blood meals.Bugs fed partial blood meals as larvae had small abdominal fat bodies following ecdysis to the adult; the quantity of blood associated with the production of one egg was large following the first adult feed because some of the blood meal was used to increase the size of the abdominal fat bodies.  相似文献

Morphology is strongly correlated with trophic mode in marine invertebrate larvae. We asked if larval morphogenesis is influenced by adelphophagy, a trophic mode in which larvae are provisioned with additional yolk in the form of extra‐embryonic nurse eggs, instead of the more common increase in egg size. We used histology and scanning electron microscopy to analyze morphogenesis in Boccardia proboscidea, a polychaete that produces both small planktotrophic larvae and large adelphophagic larvae in a single egg capsule. Results indicate that both morphs are similar for histogenesis of ectodermal derivatives, and differ for the gut mucosa and coelom which show delayed differentiation in the adelphophagic morph. Heterochrony in gut and coelom development suggests that differentiation of these organ systems is decoupled from overall development, and that a trade‐off exists between maturation of these tissues and rapid growth. We also looked for potential barriers to adelphophagy in planktotrophic larvae that have nurse eggs available to them. These planktotrophic larvae appeared morphologically equipped for adelphophagy: the gut was differentiated at an early stage, and larvae had structures involved in nurse‐egg ingestion in the adelphophagic morph (e.g., oral cilia and ventral ciliated patches). Planktotrophic larvae were additionally capable of ingesting particles (Di‐I) while in the egg capsule. Lack of adelphophagy in planktotrophic larvae remains enigmatic but these results indicate that morphology alone does not account for the arrested development shown by these larvae. J. The size at which feeding structures developed and shifts in head proportions occurred, differed between Atlantic cod Gadus morhua and winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus. The sequence and timing of the development of feeding structures may not be dependent on size, but may occur because they are necessary to meet specific requirements offish larvae feeding in the plankton. In early larval stages development of feeding structures was similar in number and type and was necessary for first-feeding in both species. In later stages, significant differences between species occurred in the timing of the development of feeding structures. In cod differentiation of new structures and changes in head proportions occurred at about two-thirds of the way through larval life, which coincided with an increase in growth. In flounder changes in feeding morphology did not occur during the symmetrical larval stage, but occurred only after metamorphosis to the asymmetrical demersal juvenile stage. Differences between cod and flounder in the size at which feeding structures develop may reflect life history adaptations expressed in the duration of the pelagic larval stage, as well as differences in juvenile habitat and feeding ecology.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Egg weights decrease over the oviposition period in all of the five satyrid butterflies that have been studied, viz Parage aegeria L., Lasiommata petropolitana F., L.maera L., L.megera L. and Lopingaachine Scop. However, within each species, no correlation was found between variation in egg weight and egg mortality in 30% relative humidity or the ability of newly hatched larvae to survive without food for 1–4 days. 2. Although egg weights of Papilio machaon L. were similar to the highest satyrid egg weights, newly hatched larvae of P.machaon showed significantly higher mortality after 1 day of starvation when compared to all of the satyrid larvae. This indicates that the capability of newly hatched larvae to endure starvation is not necessarily correlated with egg weight, and consequently that this character trait of satyrid larvae has been selected for (i.e. should be regarded as an adaptation). It is noteworthy that this ability of satyrid larvae to endure starvation is coupled with the habit of many satyrid butterflies not to deposit their eggs directly on the larval host plants. 3. In 30% relative humidity, egg mortality of L.achine was 100% and that of P.aegeria 29.2%, whereas that of the three Lasiommata spp. was significantly lower. At 100% relative humidity egg mortality in L.achine dropped to 8%. Since egg weights are higher in L.achine than in the other four satyrids this indicates that egg resistance to desiccation is not necessarily correlated with egg size (as might be expected due to the area to volume ratio which is negatively correlated with egg size). Thus the resistance to desiccation which is found in the three Lasiommata spp. should be regarded as an adaptation to the habit of these three butterflies to deposit their eggs in relatively dry microhabitats. This resistance to desiccation is not found in eggs of the two forest-dwelling satyrids P.aegeria and L.achine which lay their eggs in microhabitats where the relative humidity is high.  相似文献

For many marine fish, intense larval mortality may provide considerable opportunity for selection, yet much less is known about the evolutionary potential of larval traits. We combined field demographic studies and manipulative experiments to estimate quantitative genetic parameters for both larval size and swimming performance for a natural population of a common coral‐reef fish, the bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus). We also examined selection on larval size by synthesizing information from published estimates of selective mortality. We introduce a method that uses the Lande–Arnold framework for examining selection on quantitative traits to empirically reconstruct adaptive landscapes. This method allows the relationship between phenotypic value and fitness components to be described across a broad range of trait values. Our results suggested that despite strong viability selection for large larvae and moderate heritability (h2= 0.29), evolutionary responses of larvae would likely be balanced by reproductive selection favoring mothers that produce more, smaller offspring. Although long‐term evolutionary responses of larval traits may be constrained by size‐number trade‐offs, our results suggest that phenotypic variation in larval size may be an ecologically important source of variability in population dynamics through effects on larval survival and recruitment to benthic populations.  相似文献

Abstract A central tenet of life‐history theory is the presence of a trade‐off between the size and number of offspring that a female can produce for a given clutch. A crucial assumption of this trade‐off is that larger offspring perform better than smaller offspring. Despite the importance of this assumption empirical, field‐based tests are rare, especially for marine organisms. We tested this assumption for the marine invertebrate, Diplosoma listerianum, a colonial ascidian that commonly occurs in temperate marine communities. Colonies that came from larger larvae had larger feeding structures than colonies that came from smaller larvae. Colonies that came from larger larvae also had higher survival and growth after 2 weeks in the field than colonies that came from smaller larvae. However, after 3 weeks in the field the colonies began to fragment and we could not detect an effect of larval size. We suggest that offspring size can have strong effects on the initial recruitment of D. listerianum but because of the tendency of this species to fragment, offspring size effects are less persistent in this species than in others.  相似文献

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the acute toxicity of ammonia and nitrite to three developmental stages of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) larvae (11, 22, and 35 days after hatching, with mean total lengths of 4.63 ± 0.14, 5.83 ± 0.17, and 7.46 ± 0.23 mm, respectively). The results showed for the first time that the acute toxicity of ammonia and nitrite is closely related to the age of Pacific cod larvae, and the acute toxicity of ammonia or nitrite increased with increased Pacific cod larval growth. Lethal concentrations (LC50) of un-ionized ammonia nitrogen (UIAN) for a 48-h exposure in 11-day post-hatch, 22-day post-hatch, and 35-day post-hatch Pacific cod larvae were 1.72, 0.69, and 0.32 mg L?1, respectively. The 48-h LC50 of nitrite nitrogen to Pacific cod larvae 11-day post-hatch, 22-day post-hatch, and 35-day post-hatch were 831.76, 269.15, and 223.87 mg L?1, respectively. The present findings demonstrate that the acute toxicity of ammonia for Pacific cod larvae is much higher than that of nitrite.  相似文献

Despite the obvious benefit of an immune system, its efficacy against pathogens and parasites may show great variation among individuals, populations and species. Understanding the causes of this variation is becoming a central theme in ecology. Many biotic and abiotic factors are known to influence immunocompetence (temperature, age, etc.). However, for a given age, size among individuals varies, probably as a result of accumulated resources. Thus, these variable resources could be allocated to immune defence and, consequently, body size may explain part of the variation in immune responsiveness. However, the influence of body size on immune defence is often overlooked. The present study investigates variations in haemocyte count and phenoloxidase activity in larvae of the phytophagous vine moth Eupoecilia ambiguella Hübner of the same age, although differing in body size. The measurements of immune function are made both when the insects are immunologically naïve and 24 h after a bacterial immune challenge. The base levels of these immune parameters do not covary with body size in naïve larvae. After the bacterial immune challenge, more haemocytes and phenoloxidase enzyme are mobilized, and the mobilization of these immune effectors is correlated positively with individual body size. Thus, larger larvae exhibit higher immunocompetence than smaller ones, suggesting that smaller larvae might be more vulnerable to infection. These results suggest that body size is probably an underestimated variable, which nevertheless modulates the insect immune system and should thus be considered as a covariate in insect immune system measurement. It is recommended therefore, that body size should be taken into account in ecological immunity studies with insects. © 2013 The Royal Entomological Society  相似文献

Critical (<30 min) and prolonged (>60 min) swimming speeds in laboratory chambers were determined for larvae of six species of Australian freshwater fishes: trout cod Maccullochella macquariensis, Murray cod Maccullochella peelii, golden perch Macquaria ambigua, silver perch Bidyanus bidyanus, carp gudgeon Hypseleotris spp. and Murray River rainbowfish Melanotaenia fluviatilis. Developmental stage (preflexion, flexion, postflexion and metalarva) better explained swimming ability than did length, size or age (days after hatch). Critical speed increased with larval development, and metalarvae were the fastest swimmers for all species. Maccullochella macquariensis larvae had the highest critical [maximum absolute 46·4 cm s?1 and 44·6 relative body lengths (LB) s?1] and prolonged (maximum 15·4 cm s?1, 15·6 LB s?1) swimming speeds and B. bidyanus larvae the lowest critical (minimum 0·1 cm s?1, 0·3 LB s?1) and prolonged swimming speeds (minimum 1·1 cm s?1, 1·0 LB s?1). Prolonged swimming trials determined that the larvae of some species could not swim for 60 min at any speed, whereas the larvae of the best swimming species, M. macquariensis, could swim for 60 min at 44% of the critical speed. The swimming performance of species with precocial life‐history strategies, with well‐developed larvae at hatch, was comparatively better and potentially had greater ability to influence their dispersal by actively swimming than species with altricial life‐history strategies, with poorly developed larvae at hatch.  相似文献

Predation encounters were staged in the laboratory to compare prey responsiveness, predator error rate, and predator capture success for juvenile cod Gadus morhua (a suction feeder) and herring Clupea harengus (a biting predator) preying on herring and plaice Pleuronectes platessa larvae. Trials were conducted at near natural temperature extremes for the larvae (8 and 13°C) to assess the importance of water temperature to the interaction. Herring larvae were significantly more responsive to attacks by herring than were plaice larvae (5·7 vs 0'0%). The two prey species were equally responsive to attacks by cod (2–6 vs 10%). Cod caught 91% of herring larvae attacked and juvenile herring caught 87%. Cod were successful in 96% of attacks on plaice, but juvenile herring caught significantly fewer (83%) plaice larvae. For each predator species, capture success did not vary significantly with prey species. Overall capture success for herring was significantly lower than that for cod. Responsiveness of herring larvae to attacks by juvenile herring increased with temperature, but predator error rate and capture success were not altered by water temperature.  相似文献

Free‐spawning species of chitons produce eggs enclosed in a coating known as the hull. In Chitonida, several studies have shown that the hull helps to direct sperm to specific areas of the egg surface, facilitating fertilization. One study has found evidence that this structure also serves to reduce the sinking rates of the eggs. To clarify how the presence of the hull modifies sinking rates in chiton eggs, here we compare sinking speeds and densities of eggs of Mopalia kennerleyi with and without the hull. Sinking rates of eggs with the hull were approximately one‐third of those without it. This structure acts as a flotation device because it has a density very close to that of seawater, and it increases the effective diameter and therefore the drag on the negatively buoyant egg. Since there is limited knowledge about morphology and behavior of chiton larvae, we also analyzed changes during ontogeny in behavior, swimming speeds, and body shape of larvae of M. kennerleyi. Over time, the larvae decreased their upward swimming tendency and preferred to stay near the bottom, and their bodies became elongated and dorso‐ventrally compressed. These changes may be related to preparation for settlement and metamorphosis. Further studies of these subjects are required in chitons, since movement of early stages, as eggs/embryos sinking or larvae swimming in the water column, may affect their survival.  相似文献

Nematospiroides dubius, unlike the closely related nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, lacks a sterol requirement for the completion of its development to the L3 stage in an aqueous suspension of formalin-killed Escherichia coli. These larvae were justascapable of completing their development to adults in mice as those grown on charcoal-feces cultures. In addition, sterols had a toxic effect on the larvae of N. dubius which was removed by substituting a Krebs-Ringer solution for distilled water. In order to interpret the absence of a sterol requirement for the development of N. dubius larvae, an analysis of the egg lipids for both species was made. N. brasiliensis had about twice the sterol concentration of N. dubius eggs. A comparison of the development for both species showed, however, that N. brasiliensis grows more than twice as much as N. dubius to reach the L3 larval stage. Therefore, the amount of endogenous sterol is insufficient for N. brasiliensis to develop from the egg to the L3 stage.N. dubius and N. brasiliensis also differ in their porphyrin requirements. Unlike N. brasiliensis, coproporphyrin did not increase the size of N. dubius larvae so that they were comparable to those grown on charcoal-feces cultures. Coproporphyrin did result in larvae that were more robust in appearance than those grown without a supplement.  相似文献
