The role of allelopathy in the Chinese-fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) replant problem was studied. The failure of Chinese-fir seedlings to grow normally in Chinese-fir replant woodland was not only caused by the depletion of nutrients and the deterioration of the structure of replant woodland soil, but also by biotic factors and allelopathy. Extracts of soils collected from replant woodlands significantly reduced the growth of Chinese-fir seedlings. Extracts and decomposing root residues also significantly inhibited the growth of Chinese-fir seedlings. Extracts of the replant soil and of the decomposing roots from Chinese-fir replant woodland were both toxic to other plants. The combination of the decomposing root residues and the pathogenic fungi reduced the growth of Chinese-fir seedlings the most when compared to the decomposing root residue alone and the control. It appears that allelopathy is at least partly involved in the Chinese-fir replant problem. ei]Section editor: R Rodriguez-Kabana

The interactive effects of citrus root residues and soil fungi on citrus replant problems were investigated. The results indicated that incorporation of citrus root residues in combination with the pathogenic fungiPhytophthora citrophthora, Pythium aphanidermatum andFusarium solani in soil caused more reduction to sour orange growth than did the root residues alone. Subsequent experiments showed that extracts of different parts of sour orange and leachates of some soil fungi increased the disease index of citrus roots grownin vitro. The citrus extracts did not affect growth of the test fungi. Thus, it appears that allelopathic compounds of plant and microbial origins build up in old citrus soil and may act as predisposal agents for the infection of citrus roots by soil pathogens.

The role of soil fungi and nematodes in citrus replant problems was investigated. Several pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi and the nematodeTylenchulus semipenetrans were isolated in about equal abundance from soils which displayed or did not display replant problems. However, in almost all trees showing evidence of decline, infection by the fungusPhytophthora citrophthora had advanced through the roots until it had reached the tree crown. Fumigation of old citrus soil with methyl bromide greatly increased the growth of sour organe. The application of Nemacure, Benomyl and Ridomil 5G confirmed the important role of pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi and nematodes in the citrus replant problem. Inoculation of methyl bromide-treated soil with the pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi separately or in combination further confirmed the previous experiments and also revealed an important role ofP. citrophthora andFusarium solani when replanting citrus in old citrus orchards.

The South Tyrol, the main apple-growing area in Italy, is characterised by intensive soil cultivation. Previous investigations have revealed the existence of replant disorders although the main causes of these have not been evaluated. A survey was carried out in this area with two main aims: to evaluate the role of soil-borne pathogens in apple replant disease and to compare the impact of organic and conventional management on replant diseases caused by soil-borne pathogens. The experimental sites were chosen to obtain three pairs of contiguous conventional and organic apple orchards. There was a high level of organic matter in both the organic and the conventional apple orchards with no appreciable differences in humic fractions. The soil sickness test with apple seedlings revealed a significant reduction in growth for all soil samples as compared to the peat control. The growth score on soil samples from organic orchards was significantly higher than that obtained on conventional soil. Total fungal population in soil samples was positively correlated to the apple seedlings growth score and negatively correlated to the frequency of root colonisation. Most of the root-colonising pathogens belonged to the well-known root rot complex, Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium spp. being the most pathogenic on apple seedlings.

Paclobutrazol [(2RS,3RS)-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pentan-3ol] was applied to soil at 0, 100, or 250 mg/3.78-liter pot containing seedlings of Swingle citrumelo, Carrizo citrange, Cleopatra mandarin, sour orange, rough lemon, and Sun Chu Sha. All cultivars were sensitive to paclobutrazol, which caused a proliferation of shorter/thicker roots, and top growth showed shorter internodes and lower dry weight. Induced changes resulted in greater root/shoot ratios, and paclobutrazol treatments showed higher concentrations of nitrogen, calcium, boron, iron, and manganese in the leaves of different cultivars. Paclobutrazol-treated seedlings did not show a greater ability to tolerate flooded soil for 60 continuous days under greenhouse conditions nor survive-6.7°C controlled freeze tests. Paclobutrazol is a potentially useful plant growth regulator to dwarf citrus, but it apparently is not a strong candidate for increasing flooding and freezing tolerance in citrus rootstock seedlings.Abbreviations PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - ANOVA analysis of variance

The genus Brevipalpus includes most of the economically important species of Tenuipalpidae. Many Brevipalpus species reproduce by theletokous parthenogenesis while other species reproduce by male fertilization of female eggs. Previous researchers have determined that Brevipalpus californicus (Banks), B. obovatus Donnadieu, and B. phoenicis (Geijskes) females were haploid with two chromosomes. The life cycle and developmental times for these three species are reviewed. Longevity of each Brevipalpus species is two to three times greater than corresponding longevities of various tetranychid mites. Brevipalpus mites inject toxic saliva into fruits, leaves, stems, twigs, and bud tissues of numerous plants including citrus. Feeding injury symptoms on selected plants include: chlorosis, blistering, bronzing, or necrotic areas on leaves by one or more Brevipalpus mites. Premature leaf drop occurred on 'Robinson' tangerine leaves in Florida (USA). Leaf drop was observed in several sweet orange and grapefruit orchards in Texas (USA) that were heavily infested with Brevipalpus mites feeding on the twigs, leaves, and fruit. Initial circular chlorotic areas appear on both sweet orange and grapefruit varieties in association with developing populations of Brevipalpus mites in Texas. These feeding sites become progressively necrotic, darker in color, and eventually develop into irregular scab-like lesions on affected fruit. Russeting and cracking of the fruits of other plant hosts are reported. Stunting of leaves and the development of Brevipalpus galls on terminal buds were recorded on sour orange, Citrus aurantium L., seedlings heavily infested with B. californicus in an insectary. The most significant threat posed by these mites is as vectors of a potentially invasive viral disease called citrus leprosis.

Factors that influenced the increase in epiphytic bacterial population size on navel orange leaves during winter months were investigated to test the assumption that such populations were the result of multiplication on orange leaves. The population sizes of bacteria of different kinds, including ice nucleation-active (Ice(sup+)) bacteria, were from 6- to 30-fold larger on leaves of navel orange trees adjacent to other plant species than on trees growing near other citrus species. Total and Ice(sup+) bacterial population sizes on other plant species growing near navel orange trees were from 18- to 60-fold and 2- to 18,000-fold larger, respectively, than on navel orange trees. About twice the number of bacterial cells of a given type were deposited onto petri dishes opened simultaneously in navel orange orchards with other plant species nearby as in orchards surrounded by citrus trees. Epiphytic bacteria and airborne bacteria were more numerous near the upwind edge of orchards bordering on other plant species, but not in orchards adjacent to other citrus trees, and decreased with distance from other plant species. Navel orange leaves also exhibited progressive increases in the ability to supercool as a function of increasing distance from the upwind edge of orchards adjacent to other plant species but not in orchards adjacent to other citrus trees. While the population size of three different bacterial strains remained nearly constant for 60 days after inoculation, total bacterial populations increased more than 50-fold during this period. These results suggest that immigration of bacteria from plants having high epiphytic bacterial populations could account for most, if not all, of the seasonal increase in bacterial populations on navel orange leaves and have important implications for procedures to modify bacterial communities on leaves.

The effects of three concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) on seven citrus rootstocks were studied under greenhouse conditions. Leaf and root mineral concentrations and seedling growth were measured. Sodium chloride was added to the nutrient solution to achieve final osmotic potentials of –0.10, –0.20, and –0.35 MPa. Increasing the concentration of NaCl in the nutrition solution reduced growth proportionally and altered leaf and root mineral concentrations of all rootstocks. Significant differences in leaf and root mineral concentration among rootstocks were also found under stressed and non-stressed conditions. Salinity caused the greatest growth reduction in Milam lemon and trifoliate orange and the least reduction in sour orange and Cleopatra mandarin. No specific nutrient deficiency was the sole factor reducing growth and causing injury to citrus rootstocks. Sodium chloride sensitivity of citrus rootstocks in terms of leaf burn symptoms and growth reduction could be attributed more to Cl than to Na. Sodium and Cl concentrations were greater in the leaves than in the roots, particularly at the medium and high salinity levels. Root Cl was not useful for assessing injury because no differences were found in root Cl concentrations among rootstocks. Increasing salinity level did not affect the level of N and Ca in the roots but did reduce N and Ca levels in the leaves. No relationship in mineral concentration or accumulation seemed to exist between citrus leaves and roots. At the –0.10 MPa salinity level, sour orange, rough lemon, and Milam were not able to exclude either Na or Cl from their leaves. Trifoliate orange and its two hybrids (Swingle citrumelo and Carrizo citrange) excluded Na at the lowest salt level used, but were unable to exclude Na at the higher salinity levels. Similarly, Cleopatra mandarin excluded Cl at the lowest salt level, but was not able to exclude Cl at higher salt concentrations. Hence, the ability of citrus rootstocks to exclude Na or Cl breaks down at higher salt concentrations.Florida Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Series No. R-02276.

The effect of citrus tristeza virus (CTV) on bark protems of susceptible citrus species and scion-rootstock combinations was studied by polyaerylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). Protein pattern of sour orange bark from CTV-infected trees on this rootstock showed reduced intensity in a protein band, about 20,000 daltons molecular weight, as compared with similar CTV-free trees. This protein modification appears specifically associated with decline induced by tristeza since it was observed on trees of different ages and scion-rootstock combinations, grown in various locations and infected with several CTV isolates, but not on trees exhibiting decline from other causes. The observed protein alteration was localized in the ribosomic fraction. No protein alteration, associated with CTV infection could be found on lemon bark, although this citrus species also behaves as a CTV-susceptible rootstock. Electrophoretic profiles obtained from CTV infected Mexican lime and Etrog citron seedlings also showed reduced intensity in a protein band with the same electrophoretic mobility as the tnodified band of sour orange.

The beta-ray gauging technique was used to measure the relativechanges occurring in the water content of sour orange and sweetlime leaves as a result of soil wetting and drying cycles. Promethium-147served as the radiation source and was found suitable for measuringchanges in citrus leaf thickness within the range of 20 mg/cm2(when soil moisture content was at ‘pot capacity’)to 10 mg/cm2 (when soil moisture dropped to wilting point).By using the correlation between beta-ray gauging measurements, leaf thickness, and relative turgidity, it is possible to determinethe status of water in citrus leaves under different soil moistureconditions.

Cold hardened and unhardened 8- or 16-month-old citrus plants were examined for differences in fatty acid (FA) content. Unhardened leaves from 8-month-old Valencia scion budded on sour orange rootstock had 29% less FAs than leaves from seedling sour orange. After cold hardening triacylglycerol (TAG) FAs increased 4-fold in Valencia on sour orange and 6-fold in sour orange seedling. The percentage of FAs associated with TAGs for unhardened-hardened 16-month-old Valencia on sour orange tissues were: upper leaves 7–20, lower leaves 6–17, bark 6–9, and roots 57–73%. Cold hardening increased the amount of TAG FAs of 16-month-old Valencia on sour orange in upper leaves by 226% and in lower leaves by 173%. Concentrations of linoleic acid increased by 479% in upper leaves and by 303% in lower leaves. Quantities of lionolenic acid in monogalactosyl diacylglycerols declined by 27% in upper leaves and by 20% in lower leaves.

A survey of citrus cultivars in Israel in orchards where Alternaria brown spot was common on Minneola tangelos (mandarin × grapefruit), revealed the occurrence of the disease as typical foliar and fruit lesions on Dancy and Ellendale (mandarins), on Murcott tangor (mandarin × sweet orange), on Nova and Idith (mandarin hybrids), on Calamondin, and on Sunrise and Redblush (grapefruit). Isolates of Alternaria alternata from each of these hosts were proven to be pathogenic to Minneola tangelo.
The host range of A. alternata pv. citri from Israel was assayed by inoculating leaves of diverse citrus genotypes. Several mandarins and their hybrids (Dancy, Kara, King, Wilking, Satsuma, Minneola, Orlando, Mikhal, Idith, Nova, Page, Murcott), grapefruit (Marsh seedless), grapefruit × pummelo (Oroblanco), sweet orange (Shamouti, Valencia, Washington navel) Calamondin, and Volkamer citrus were susceptible. Several mandarins and their hybrids (Clementine, Avana, Yafit, Ortanique), Cleopatra, one sweet orange cultivar (Newhall), pummelo (Chandler), lemon (Eureka), Rough lemon, Rangpur lime, sweet lime, citron, limequat, sour orange, Troyer citrange and Alemow were resistant.

Three cultivars of citrus with different sensitivities to freezing temperatures (citron, Citrus medica L.; rough lemon, C. limon Burm. F; sour orange, C. aurantium L.) were cold hardened for 4 weeks. Lipids from leaves of hardened and control seedlings were fractionated and analyzed for fatty acids. The absolute amount of triglycerides and phospholipids increased in the leaves upon hardening. With hardening, total linoleic acid also increased 141% in citron, 210% in rough lemon, and 233% in sour orange. Specific increases in linoleic acid were found in triglycerides, in the four phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol), and in neutral lipids more polar than triglycerides. Trans-3-hexadecenoic acid was found only in phosphatidylglycerol.

Tristeza is a devastating viral disease in all the citrus growing countries throughout the world and has killed millions of citrus trees in severely affected orchards. The citrus species grafted on sour orange rootstock are affected by this disease. Predominantly, the sweet orange, grapefruit and lime trees grafted on sour orange exhibit severe symptoms like quick decline, vein clearing, pin holing, bark scaling and degeneration leading to variable symptoms. Symptomatic expression of Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) in different hosts has been attributed to virus isolates which are from severe to mild. Different serological and molecular assays have been deployed to differentiate the strains of CTV. Citrus tristeza virus is diversified towards its strains on the basis of biological, serological and molecular characterization. Phenotypic expression is due to genetic alteration and different molecular basis have now been adopted for strain differentiation. This review will give a brief idea about the different CTV isolates, their characterization based on nucleic acid and serological assays. Different methods along with salient features for strain characterization has also been reviewed. This review will also open the new aspects towards formulation of management strategies through different detection techniques.

The predatory mite,Amblyseius gossipi Elbadry was reared on leaves of sour orange and fig. The sour orange leaves, which have smooth surfaces, promoted a faster development and a higher rate of prey consumption, whereas the hairy fig leaves led to a retardation in the predator development and a lower rate of prey consumption. The distinct preference of this predator for smooth leaves explains its abundance on citrus trees and its scarcity on fig trees. Thus, ?thigmotaxis” is not a common feature among predacious mites but a specific character.

The water relations responses to salt of several important citrus rootstocks such as Swingle citrumelo, sour orange, and Milam lemon have not been studied in detail before. Studies were set up to compare growth and root hydraulic properties of these rootstocks to other citrus rootstocks by exposing them to NaCl and polyethylene glycol (PEG) stresses. Seedlings of 7 citrus rootstocks were irrigated for 5 months with nutrient solutions containing NaCl or PEG that had been adjusted to osmotic potentials of -0.10, -0.20 or -0.35 MPa. The 7 rootstocks studied were sour orange (Citrus aurantium), Cleopatra mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco), Swingle citrumelo (C. paradisi x P. trifoliata), Carrizo citrange (C. sinensis x P. trifoliata), rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush), Milam lemon (C. jambhiri hybrid), and trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata [L.] Raf.). In both shoot and root growth, Cleopatra mandarin and sour orange were the least sensitive to salt, Milam and trifoliate orange were the most sensitive, and rough lemon, Swingle, and Carrizo were intermediate in sensitivity. Even though the roots were exposed to solutions of equal osmotic potentials, plant growth and root conductivity were reduced more by the PEG treatments than the corresponding NaCl treatments. At -0.10 and -0.20 MPa, shoot and root dry weights were reduced 16 to 55% by NaCl and 24 to 68% by PEG. Shoot root ratio was lowered at the higher concentrations, particularly by PEG. There was a major decrease in root conductivity caused by NaCl at -0.10 MPa (19 to 30% in sour orange and Cleopatra mandarin and 78 to 85% in trifoliate orange and Milam). Conductivity decreased more at -0.20 and -0.35 MPa, but not proportionally as much as at -0.10 MPa. Root weight per unit length increased at the higher salt levels, particularly in trifoliate orange. Water flow rate through root systems followed the same trend as root conductivity; salt affected sour orange and Cleopatra mandarin the least and trifoliate orange and Milam the most. However, reductions in fibrous root length by salt treatment differed. Root lengths of Swingle and Carrizo were least affected by salt while sour orange. Milam, and rough lemon were the most affected. Hence, even though sour orange and Cleopatra mandarin were more tolerant than the other rootstocks in terms of water flow rate or root conductivity, these 2 rootstocks showed a proportionally greater decrease in root length than Carrizo, Swingle, or trifoliate orange.
